Speaker:Thank you.
Speaker:I'm so excited to be here soon.
Speaker:Thanks so much for inviting me.
Speaker:Is there anything that we should add to your intro before
Speaker:we get started?
Speaker:No, I think that pretty much sums it up.
Speaker:I would like to just share real quickly.
Speaker:I am very passionate about shortening the learning curves,
Speaker:whether you're a new business owner or whether you're a business
Speaker:owner it's been around for a little bit,
Speaker:but you've just felt like you're stuck in some places.
Speaker:That's my passion is really taking somebody's situation and giving them
Speaker:the knowledge that they can take back into their businesses and
Speaker:make a difference.
Speaker:That's fabulous because that's my passion as well.
Speaker:And that's why most people are listening here today.
Speaker:So I am so excited to dive in and as our
Speaker:listeners know,
Speaker:we like to start the conversation and revolve it around the
Speaker:life of a motivational candle.
Speaker:The light shines on you,
Speaker:Kim, while you share your and experiences.
Speaker:So are you ready to light it up?
Speaker:Let's light it up.
Speaker:What color is your motivational candle and what would be the
Speaker:quote on that candle?
Speaker:I think it would be purple because purple is one of
Speaker:my favorite colors and it would say I can do all
Speaker:things through him who gives me the strength to do it.
Speaker:Wonderful. And how do you use this as you're going through
Speaker:your daily life?
Speaker:Basically, I have found that,
Speaker:you know,
Speaker:I am very spiritual and I find that if I don't
Speaker:feel like I'm in this all alone,
Speaker:that somebody there is a higher power that gives me strength.
Speaker:And if I lean on that strength,
Speaker:it is really given me a sense of encouragement and comfort
Speaker:in knowing that I can do more.
Speaker:And that's how I leverage that quote.
Speaker:I love that quote and I really agree with you.
Speaker:I mean,
Speaker:all of us who are striving in this world,
Speaker:you just can't do it alone,
Speaker:whether it's spiritual in the faith like you're talking about,
Speaker:or you have someone else who's supporting you,
Speaker:who's believing in you.
Speaker:I think behind every successful person,
Speaker:there's someone else that people can lean on.
Speaker:And it's not a sign of weakness when you are asking
Speaker:for help and support from somebody.
Speaker:Absolutely agree.
Speaker:In fact,
Speaker:regardless of whether you're spiritual or not,
Speaker:if you have someone and sometimes it's multiple someones that you
Speaker:can rely on,
Speaker:whether you're in a mastermind with other business owners or whether
Speaker:you have a really supportive spouse,
Speaker:I've had that in my life.
Speaker:My husband has been my biggest cheerleader for,
Speaker:Oh, you know,
Speaker:our entire married life.
Speaker:And so I've had that,
Speaker:you know,
Speaker:at my back also,
Speaker:but you know,
Speaker:you can just connect with people that are on the same
Speaker:path and,
Speaker:you know,
Speaker:social media in particular gives us a great opportunity to do
Speaker:that and surround ourselves with people that want the same things
Speaker:and are going in the same direction.
Speaker:There's that old saying that you're the sum of the five
Speaker:people that you surround yourself with are the top five people
Speaker:that you surround yourself with.
Speaker:And I think there's a lot to be said for that.
Speaker:If you stop and think about it for a moment and
Speaker:say, wow,
Speaker:you know,
Speaker:if I'm,
Speaker:you know,
Speaker:surrounding myself with negative,
Speaker:can't do people,
Speaker:or am I surrounding myself with positive can-do people?
Speaker:And how does that impact your day to day?
Speaker:It definitely impacts your day to day.
Speaker:I totally agree,
Speaker:Kim, when I was thinking about what we were going to
Speaker:talk about,
Speaker:there are so many ways we can go because you just
Speaker:know so much about a lot of things,
Speaker:but I want to address the elephant in the room of
Speaker:the day,
Speaker:right now,
Speaker:around social media.
Speaker:And that is live streaming.
Speaker:It's been,
Speaker:Oh, not even quite a year that Periscope's been around and
Speaker:their Snapchat and now there's Facebook.
Speaker:I've, you know,
Speaker:all of that.
Speaker:And I've gotten a lot of questions lately about,
Speaker:well, you know,
Speaker:how does this apply to my business?
Speaker:Why should I be using it for my business?
Speaker:I know you are very in tuned to all of live
Speaker:streaming. So can you address that a little bit in terms
Speaker:of what's the value?
Speaker:What is the big deal about this anyway?
Speaker:Well, basically from a life,
Speaker:I call it live video.
Speaker:Now when they first started was live streaming,
Speaker:but it's really just all encompassing because you're right.
Speaker:There's so many applications for,
Speaker:or, or apps or,
Speaker:you know,
Speaker:whether it's Facebook live or whether it's Periscope or Snapchat,
Speaker:to your point,
Speaker:they're all mediums.
Speaker:Honestly. Why should someone care and why should you be,
Speaker:you know,
Speaker:is it something you should implement in your business?
Speaker:I'll just say this,
Speaker:because I think this is probably the simplest way to answer
Speaker:the question.
Speaker:I've been online and owned an online business,
Speaker:multiple online businesses now for almost 25 years.
Speaker:And I have gone through the entire,
Speaker:almost the entire process of how an online business starts and
Speaker:the, and then the seasons of things that have come and
Speaker:gone over the years and been involved in tons of different
Speaker:marketing mediums and whether they're paid or free or whatever.
Speaker:And I have yet to see anything like live video that
Speaker:builds the know like,
Speaker:and trust factor at the rate that it does and video
Speaker:in particular.
Speaker:And a lot of business owners have heard that video is,
Speaker:Oh, you got to do videos.
Speaker:You got to put videos on YouTube and yet it's a
Speaker:hold up.
Speaker:And so many people haven't literally said,
Speaker:Oh, you know,
Speaker:I'm going to make the time for that.
Speaker:Or like,
Speaker:in my case,
Speaker:it was a pain point for me.
Speaker:It was like,
Speaker:okay, it has to be perfect.
Speaker:And I felt like every time I sit down in front
Speaker:of the camera,
Speaker:I was talking to myself and it didn't come across as
Speaker:genuine. And so when live streaming came along,
Speaker:I still kind of viewed it like that.
Speaker:I was like,
Speaker:Oh my gosh,
Speaker:I'm going to have to sit down in front of a
Speaker:camera and it's going to be even worse because people are
Speaker:going to see me alive and real time.
Speaker:And what if I screw up,
Speaker:I can't edit that.
Speaker:You know?
Speaker:So I worried about that,
Speaker:those aspects of it until I actually did it and realized
Speaker:that I could engage with people in real time.
Speaker:And I was hooked,
Speaker:like I say,
Speaker:I guess the simple answer.
Speaker:And I really was trying to make it simple and went
Speaker:off on a boondoggle.
Speaker:But the simple answer again,
Speaker:is if you're serious about building a connected community or a
Speaker:tribe, and it's the fastest way to do so that I've
Speaker:ever seen.
Speaker:And if someone was interested in starting,
Speaker:how do you make sure that the right people are listening
Speaker:to your scope?
Speaker:Then It's a process.
Speaker:It could be honestly,
Speaker:it could be a Periscope or it could be a Facebook
Speaker:live. Now almost everybody has access to Facebook live on their
Speaker:business pages.
Speaker:For the most part,
Speaker:if you're an iOS user,
Speaker:let me specify that it's rolling out slowly but surely,
Speaker:but a lot of people have access to it on their
Speaker:fan pages now.
Speaker:So whether you're going to do Facebook live or whether you're
Speaker:going to do Periscope or,
Speaker:and my recommendation is to do both simultaneously,
Speaker:which is what I've been doing that way.
Speaker:You're using one block of time and you're serving two spaces,
Speaker:you know,
Speaker:two communities simultaneously.
Speaker:So if you already have a fan base,
Speaker:then you can do Facebook live and pull in the community
Speaker:that you've already built.
Speaker:And if you're just getting started on Periscope,
Speaker:leverage your other social platforms to let people know that you're
Speaker:going to be live on Periscope.
Speaker:And then of course,
Speaker:there's a ton of other ways that you can do this.
Speaker:I, you know,
Speaker:once you get active on Periscope,
Speaker:you can start having some consistent strategies to jump on other
Speaker:people's scopes,
Speaker:start to connect and ultimately add value to other people's scopes
Speaker:as well.
Speaker:So that people will say,
Speaker:Hey, that person's pretty neat.
Speaker:And I'm going to follow that person.
Speaker:There's lots of ways that you can attract people to you.
Speaker:But the short answer is get started.
Speaker:Then leverage your other communities that you've built in other places
Speaker:to drive traffic to the locations that you're going to be
Speaker:live, to include your list.
Speaker:If you have a list,
Speaker:let people know when your list that you're going to be
Speaker:Periscoping at a certain time,
Speaker:and this is going to be the topic.
Speaker:In fact,
Speaker:Sue, do you mind if I share a quick story,
Speaker:please do.
Speaker:Okay. I have an associate,
Speaker:basically an acquaintance,
Speaker:not really a friend,
Speaker:but someone who shared their story with me as it related
Speaker:to how they had leveraged Periscope,
Speaker:they didn't have a big social media presence.
Speaker:So a lot of people that are listening right now may
Speaker:say, well,
Speaker:yeah, Kim just said I needed to use my other social
Speaker:platforms, but you know,
Speaker:I'm not really active and I don't have a big fan
Speaker:base and I'm not here.
Speaker:I'm not there.
Speaker:And so that's not really going to work for me.
Speaker:So does that mean I can't use it?
Speaker:So this particular lady had a list or list wasn't terribly
Speaker:huge. She had about 10,000
Speaker:people on our list.
Speaker:And again,
Speaker:some are saying,
Speaker:well, wow,
Speaker:my list isn't anywhere near that.
Speaker:But the point is that she leveraged what she had.
Speaker:And so she decided to do a scope every day for
Speaker:30 days,
Speaker:that was her strategy.
Speaker:And she gave content just value after value,
Speaker:after value.
Speaker:Basically they were live video blogs essentially.
Speaker:And she invited her list every day to those Periscopes.
Speaker:And that's how she started.
Speaker:The interesting part is through the course of those 30 days,
Speaker:she sold 71 of her $15,000
Speaker:coaching packages.
Speaker:Wow. So she made over a million dollars.
Speaker:If you do the math in a very short window of
Speaker:time, simply by giving value and leveraging the community that she
Speaker:had already built,
Speaker:which was her list.
Speaker:Wow. That's a great story.
Speaker:I'm really glad you thought about sharing that.
Speaker:And I want to drive home what Kim's talking about,
Speaker:give busy listeners in that there's no other medium with the
Speaker:know like,
Speaker:and trust.
Speaker:And I would emphasize that middle word,
Speaker:the like,
Speaker:and even though it's live,
Speaker:it can be really scary because you're not editing those little
Speaker:mess ups that you do or words that you mispronounced or
Speaker:all of that are how people like you,
Speaker:because they can relate to you,
Speaker:your human,
Speaker:your one of them,
Speaker:just an idea that came up just to again,
Speaker:bring this home to some of our listeners.
Speaker:If you are a jeweler and you make beautiful jewelry,
Speaker:for example,
Speaker:maybe you're a,
Speaker:beader some of the types of things that you can do
Speaker:on scope.
Speaker:Our demos teach other people how to bead.
Speaker:You're not onto sell.
Speaker:You're on to give value.
Speaker:As Kim was talking about,
Speaker:you can do demos,
Speaker:you can do interviews with customers.
Speaker:You can do things about your shop.
Speaker:Maybe you were painting your shop and you want to have
Speaker:an audience help you with a new color,
Speaker:selecting colors,
Speaker:you know,
Speaker:anything. There's just so many creative ways to use this medium
Speaker:that I don't want you to think that it's just for
Speaker:people who are selling services or the big time people it
Speaker:can be for absolutely anybody.
Speaker:People do cooking demos,
Speaker:all sorts of things.
Speaker:If you have not looked at any of these live by
Speaker:video type platforms yet,
Speaker:meaning Periscope or Facebook live,
Speaker:go in and search and take a look at what people
Speaker:are doing.
Speaker:It's really a great,
Speaker:You have another story.
Speaker:Oh, good.
Speaker:Jump. Right in and tell it.
Speaker:Yeah, because I,
Speaker:it tied right into what you just said as to how
Speaker:other people are leveraging it specifically in the space that you
Speaker:serve. So,
Speaker:as let's say,
Speaker:for example,
Speaker:you make clothing or anything that has an Etsy kind of
Speaker:application where you're trying to sell your crafts or your products
Speaker:on Etsy.
Speaker:I have a client who was a designer,
Speaker:a clothing designer,
Speaker:and she's been a half day,
Speaker:a half of a VIP day with me.
Speaker:Oh, I guess probably six months ago.
Speaker:And one of the ideas I gave her is unlike sweetie,
Speaker:please start Periscoping and showing your clothing.
Speaker:I said,
Speaker:you can dress up in your clothes.
Speaker:You can style it,
Speaker:whatever. And that's exactly what she has been doing.
Speaker:And she has translated that even as far as a Facebook
Speaker:group, where she posts those videos in her Facebook group every
Speaker:evening, and it is changed the face of her business,
Speaker:she creates sales each and every day through her Facebook group,
Speaker:because it's a connected community of people who said,
Speaker:Hey, I want to pay attention to what you're doing.
Speaker:And you know,
Speaker:I want to see what the latest and greatest is when
Speaker:you get a new print,
Speaker:for example,
Speaker:I want to know what it looks like.
Speaker:And so that's exactly what she does.
Speaker:And she is literally changed the face of her business with
Speaker:this one tab.
Speaker:Wow. And also so many people,
Speaker:you know,
Speaker:when they get one outfit,
Speaker:it's like,
Speaker:what do I match with it?
Speaker:How do I wear it?
Speaker:What is it going to look like?
Speaker:So she's all of that world has opened up to her
Speaker:viewers by her demonstrating that.
Speaker:And she's partnered with people who do jury,
Speaker:for example,
Speaker:as a medium to share their product with her clothing line.
Speaker:Right? So she will do scarves and necklaces and bracelets and
Speaker:everything that kind of goes along with assessor rising,
Speaker:even down to the shoes.
Speaker:And not only is she changing her business,
Speaker:but she has changed the face of other people's businesses because
Speaker:she's selling other people's accessories essentially to go with her clothes.
Speaker:Right. And that can just go on and on and on.
Speaker:Absolutely. So Kim,
Speaker:you were the first person to bring out a training program
Speaker:for using Periscope.
Speaker:If someone now we hopefully we've sparked some interest in people
Speaker:who haven't ever thought of using this for themselves before.
Speaker:If you could just give a couple of ideas of how
Speaker:you should get started and then also make mention of your
Speaker:course so that if people are interested,
Speaker:they'll know about that.
Speaker:Okay. Sure.
Speaker:Well, yes.
Speaker:I was one of the first to develop a Periscope for
Speaker:business course.
Speaker:I'm always very,
Speaker:to make sure that people are aware,
Speaker:it's not just about,
Speaker:Hey, this is how you use the Paris,
Speaker:go back.
Speaker:It's how do you leverage it for business?
Speaker:And there are so many ways.
Speaker:And so many times people say,
Speaker:Oh, well,
Speaker:that's just a new thing.
Speaker:Don't, you know,
Speaker:that's one more thing.
Speaker:I don't have time for one more thing.
Speaker:So I have been challenging business owners to think about changing
Speaker:their thinking and then leveraging the time slot that they spend
Speaker:on Periscope as a media to create content for all their
Speaker:other social platforms.
Speaker:So let me explain what I mean by that.
Speaker:Basically taking a block of time,
Speaker:say 20 to 30 minutes and giving a value,
Speaker:add, you know,
Speaker:maybe it's five ways to do X and basically talk a
Speaker:concept and give some value five tips on something very specific
Speaker:when you're done with that,
Speaker:you can leverage the video one,
Speaker:but you can transcribe it and turn that into a blog
Speaker:post. You can take out tweetable moments.
Speaker:We all say things,
Speaker:you know,
Speaker:the course of,
Speaker:you know,
Speaker:conversing and sharing our ideas and our knowledge or expertise.
Speaker:And we can take out those blurbs and turn them into,
Speaker:you know,
Speaker:tweets for Twitter,
Speaker:or we could turn them into visual content for Facebook and
Speaker:Instagram. And the beautiful part about it is it's our words.
Speaker:So you can take a block of time,
Speaker:you know,
Speaker:20 to 30 minute block of time,
Speaker:do a live video,
Speaker:and then multipurpose that one piece of content into 50 pieces
Speaker:of content that you can share across all of your platforms.
Speaker:So I'm sharing and trying to encourage people to realize that
Speaker:this is actually a time-saver then you're not sending down in
Speaker:front of Facebook and saying,
Speaker:Oh man,
Speaker:what am I going to share today?
Speaker:You just have to learn how to segment it and repurpose
Speaker:it essentially in multiple ways.
Speaker:And you're so right,
Speaker:because so many people are like,
Speaker:well, what do we put up?
Speaker:What do I post?
Speaker:And this actually leads into talking about social media that I
Speaker:want to get to in a minute,
Speaker:but you're right.
Speaker:And the preparation for a live video is so much less
Speaker:than even writing a blog.
Speaker:I mean,
Speaker:that takes so much longer to Absolutely.
Speaker:And the reality is we all know our stuff,
Speaker:we all know our expertise and we can speak it usually
Speaker:much quicker than we can write it.
Speaker:I mean,
Speaker:that's just the reality of it to your point.
Speaker:Exactly. You know,
Speaker:write down,
Speaker:okay. Here's my five bullet points of,
Speaker:you know,
Speaker:what I want to speak about and what I want to
Speaker:share and then share that on Periscope or on Facebook live
Speaker:or snippets of it,
Speaker:even on Snapchat,
Speaker:if you so choose to do so,
Speaker:that's an opportunity that you can leverage across the board.
Speaker:And then again,
Speaker:create multiple touch points from the one piece of content that
Speaker:you just literally spent 30 minutes creating.
Speaker:So these are the types of things I teach in my
Speaker:course. And if there is something that's like,
Speaker:wow, that's interesting.
Speaker:I really,
Speaker:that makes sense to me.
Speaker:You can definitely check it out.
Speaker:My website is scoping for biz bic.com,
Speaker:no sales push here just a bit.
Speaker:If it's of interest to you and you want to,
Speaker:you know,
Speaker:check it out,
Speaker:please feel free too.
Speaker:Perfect. And just one final question on this whole live video,
Speaker:the absolute hardest part,
Speaker:I think for everybody is they know what they're going to
Speaker:do. They put their title up there and then they see
Speaker:that big red button that says start broadcast.
Speaker:What is your single best piece of advice for people who
Speaker:are going to touch it?
Speaker:And then they're afraid,
Speaker:and then they're going to touch it.
Speaker:And then they really look at their notes and then they're
Speaker:going to touch it.
Speaker:And they're about to walk away.
Speaker:What would you say to them then?
Speaker:Well, having been there myself,
Speaker:because that was a problem,
Speaker:even for me.
Speaker:And I would say that most people would probably say the
Speaker:same, you know,
Speaker:when they first get started,
Speaker:there's that fear factor of putting yourself out there and not
Speaker:knowing what's on the other side.
Speaker:So my suggestion to you would be to practice in advance,
Speaker:you know,
Speaker:with Periscope in particular,
Speaker:you can't do this with Facebook live,
Speaker:but with Periscope,
Speaker:you can,
Speaker:you can do,
Speaker:what's called private scopes.
Speaker:So maybe get a friend or two to watch you and
Speaker:give you some feedback.
Speaker:That might be one suggestion I have,
Speaker:but ultimately you just have to have the courage to get
Speaker:beyond the fear factor and just do it.
Speaker:I know that's easier said than done,
Speaker:but do the practice and then just have the courage to
Speaker:do it.
Speaker:Even if there's not anyone watching,
Speaker:you know,
Speaker:if you don't see a bunch of people flooding in that
Speaker:still content that you're setting down and creating that can,
Speaker:you can leverage and also many other ways.
Speaker:So until you get,
Speaker:you know,
Speaker:build that community and people start coming in routinely and paying
Speaker:attention and giving you feedback,
Speaker:use it as a way to create content quickly and easily,
Speaker:and then multipurpose that content.
Speaker:Perfect. You've given a great demonstration of how all of the
Speaker:information that you're doing live then can be on your different
Speaker:social media platforms.
Speaker:So that's perfect.
Speaker:I want to back it up a little farther,
Speaker:I think because there are now so many platforms out there
Speaker:and I hear this from people all the time.
Speaker:I don't have time to be on every single platform,
Speaker:which one should I be choosing?
Speaker:Which ones do I really need?
Speaker:Which ones are really going to help me grow my business?
Speaker:What advice do you have for someone let's take a scenario
Speaker:where someone is just starting out and they're just building their
Speaker:business. Do they have to be on all these platforms at
Speaker:once? Or what would your advice be to someone like that?
Speaker:Well, no,
Speaker:you don't.
Speaker:So take a big deep breath and say,
Speaker:whew, thank goodness.
Speaker:Kim said,
Speaker:I don't have to be everywhere.
Speaker:You don't.
Speaker:In fact,
Speaker:you know,
Speaker:even myself,
Speaker:who's in the social media space has,
Speaker:you know,
Speaker:said, you know,
Speaker:I'm going to focus on a few of these platforms and
Speaker:do them really well.
Speaker:And then I have a little bit more time than,
Speaker:you know,
Speaker:maybe I'll get active over there.
Speaker:About a month ago,
Speaker:I got a tweet from Gary Vaynerchuk and he said,
Speaker:Kim, are you on Snapchat?
Speaker:And I'm like,
Speaker:Oh man,
Speaker:here he be just called me out on Twitter.
Speaker:I've got to get over there,
Speaker:get active.
Speaker:Oh my gosh.
Speaker:For a few days,
Speaker:I was like,
Speaker:Oh man,
Speaker:I'm the one I've got to learn it because it was
Speaker:a whole new platform.
Speaker:And I don't think it's intuitive.
Speaker:And well,
Speaker:do I need to be here is my ideal customer here.
Speaker:So I think the short answer is no,
Speaker:you do not have to be active everywhere and you need
Speaker:to decide independently.
Speaker:Each business owner needs to decide what kind of time and
Speaker:resources do I have to devote to social media.
Speaker:And if you have a little bit of time and no
Speaker:resources to speak of,
Speaker:in other words,
Speaker:you have no help.
Speaker:I personally think that most everyone's ideal client is probably on
Speaker:Facebook. It's kind of the elephant,
Speaker:but let's say for example,
Speaker:you know,
Speaker:your ideal customer is a woman.
Speaker:Then maybe you need to be more active on Pinterest or
Speaker:Instagram. And of course,
Speaker:like I shared with you pin Periscope and Facebook live are
Speaker:great mediums for creating content and connecting face to face with
Speaker:people. So do you,
Speaker:would you rather spend 30 minutes on Periscope or Facebook live
Speaker:or maybe both simultaneously and create blog content for your website
Speaker:or would you rather sit down and spend two to three
Speaker:hours writing that content?
Speaker:So I,
Speaker:across the board,
Speaker:you know,
Speaker:I'm saying you need to decide where you feel your ideal
Speaker:client is active and where you can connect with them and
Speaker:where you feel comfortable the most.
Speaker:Because honestly that's where you're going to spend the majority of
Speaker:your time.
Speaker:That's why I see a lot of people gravitate back to
Speaker:Facebook because they feel comfortable there.
Speaker:Most of us start on Facebook and the good news is
Speaker:for most business owners,
Speaker:their ideal clients are absolutely on Facebook.
Speaker:So it just depends,
Speaker:but I think you need to evaluate it.
Speaker:And I would also say that you need to master one
Speaker:and start getting success from one or two before you try
Speaker:to embrace seven or eight,
Speaker:because ultimately you're going to do none of them.
Speaker:Well, excellent Advice,
Speaker:Kim. I appreciate that.
Speaker:And now everyone can take a big breath and sigh of
Speaker:relief and follow Kim's advice.
Speaker:Let's talk in Facebook,
Speaker:particularly. I think people who are just starting out,
Speaker:let's talk about that group again.
Speaker:They have a personal page already,
Speaker:right? So what's your advice and,
Speaker:and, and possibly they've attracted customers to their personal page because
Speaker:they haven't had a fan page yet.
Speaker:Even what I've noticed on my platforms is between my personal
Speaker:and my fan pages.
Speaker:A lot of my customers like to be on both.
Speaker:They'd like to interact with me on my personal page as
Speaker:well. What are your thoughts about the difference between the two
Speaker:and what do you do as a business owner when you've
Speaker:got people because you've friended them on your personal page and
Speaker:then they also are on your fan page.
Speaker:A lot of business owners,
Speaker:especially when they're new,
Speaker:don't realize that they are violating Facebook's terms of service when
Speaker:they leverage their personal profile for business.
Speaker:So technically you are not allowed to use your personal profile
Speaker:for commerce.
Speaker:So you have to be very careful.
Speaker:That doesn't mean you can't share things that are happening in
Speaker:your business.
Speaker:You can't just try to directly sell.
Speaker:In other words,
Speaker:you can't post your latest necklace and say it's $20 or
Speaker:$50 or a hundred dollars or whatever it is,
Speaker:and try to sell it from your pay.
Speaker:I mean,
Speaker:from your profile,
Speaker:that's why you have to have a business page.
Speaker:If you're really wanting to build a platform for your business,
Speaker:your products and your services.
Speaker:That said,
Speaker:though, there is a crossover exactly,
Speaker:to your point too,
Speaker:where lots of times when you first get started,
Speaker:you have connections in both places.
Speaker:You know,
Speaker:and people will connect with you on your personal profile because
Speaker:you built a relationship with them and they want to connect
Speaker:with you regardless.
Speaker:And I don't see that that's a problem when people are
Speaker:connecting and engaging with your content on your personal profile,
Speaker:you just have to redirect them to your fan page or
Speaker:your business page.
Speaker:If you are going to try to conduct any kind of
Speaker:financial transaction.
Speaker:And I heard horror stories of people's pages being shut down
Speaker:or those personal pages or fan pages,
Speaker:Well, you can get your business page shut down for trying
Speaker:to do business because that's what they are.
Speaker:I mean,
Speaker:that's what they're designed for.
Speaker:But if you are leveraging your personal profile for commerce and
Speaker:someone reports you,
Speaker:you could absolutely lose your whole Facebook account.
Speaker:Normally they give you a warning or put you in what
Speaker:we call Facebook jail.
Speaker:No, two,
Speaker:two weeks,
Speaker:sorry, you can't do X,
Speaker:Y, or Z,
Speaker:but I have seen some people just literally try to log
Speaker:on, you know,
Speaker:one morning and lo and behold,
Speaker:they no longer have a Facebook account.
Speaker:And the reality is many times our personal profiles are tied
Speaker:to our fan pages,
Speaker:which means we can't access our fan page and it can
Speaker:create a real,
Speaker:real problem that you just don't need.
Speaker:So my advice always is to try to keep it separate.
Speaker:And I would also recommend that you have someone else be
Speaker:an admin on your page in case something does happen to
Speaker:your personal profile.
Speaker:You know,
Speaker:someone you trust,
Speaker:you know,
Speaker:a relative or friend that can access your fan page in
Speaker:the event that you do lose your personal profile.
Speaker:For some reason,
Speaker:That is a great piece of advice.
Speaker:I've never thought of that.
Speaker:And I have not done that.
Speaker:I'm going to be doing that this afternoon,
Speaker:for sure.
Speaker:Yeah. Cause something can happen just by accident and you can't
Speaker:access it.
Speaker:Absolutely. Even if you go so far as to create an
Speaker:account, that's I hate to say I'm big.
Speaker:I don't mean it like that,
Speaker:but maybe something like maybe use your maiden name or something
Speaker:and have a separate Facebook account that you have total control
Speaker:over has a different email address because you can't use the
Speaker:same email address.
Speaker:And yet that's kind of your backup for your fan page.
Speaker:Excellent idea.
Speaker:So give biz listeners,
Speaker:if any of you are in this situation,
Speaker:cause you just didn't know and you are using your personal
Speaker:page for business,
Speaker:go right away this afternoon.
Speaker:It's really super easy to create a fan page.
Speaker:You just,
Speaker:you link it to your personal page.
Speaker:Cause you have to have a profile personal page to create
Speaker:a fan page.
Speaker:And all you do is you make your fan page,
Speaker:fill in as you do any platform and then it's linked
Speaker:to your personal profile,
Speaker:but just get that taken care of.
Speaker:So you've got it established,
Speaker:you've grabbed your name and then you can start filling it
Speaker:in as you go,
Speaker:but heed the advice because you know,
Speaker:sometimes you hear it,
Speaker:then all of a sudden it can happen to you.
Speaker:So you don't want that to happen.
Speaker:Definitely not.
Speaker:Well, definitely not.
Speaker:All right.
Speaker:I'd like to roll over now into our reflection section Kim.
Speaker:This is a place where we take a look at you
Speaker:a little bit further and you give us some advice and
Speaker:guidance and expertise on what's made you successful along the way.
Speaker:If you think back to when you were a little girl
Speaker:and as you were growing up and you know,
Speaker:in your corporate life and building the online businesses,
Speaker:what would you say is one trait that just naturally comes
Speaker:to you that you've drawn on to be successful?
Speaker:I, you know,
Speaker:I would have to say in some cases,
Speaker:I'm not sure it's an attractive one,
Speaker:but just pure stubbornness.
Speaker:I refuse to give up.
Speaker:It's one of those things.
Speaker:When you know,
Speaker:I've gone through a lot over the years.
Speaker:In fact,
Speaker:it took me almost five years to make my first $60
Speaker:in my first business.
Speaker:And some people would say,
Speaker:Oh my goodness,
Speaker:how in the world,
Speaker:why did you keep after it?
Speaker:And I look back in hindsight and I'm like,
Speaker:why in the world?
Speaker:And my husband and would say,
Speaker:honey, give it up already to make any money.
Speaker:And yet I just kept pressing ovarian pressing on.
Speaker:And that is kind of in my thing.
Speaker:And you know,
Speaker:recently I had a virus on my computer and my husband's
Speaker:like, just take it somewhere.
Speaker:And I'm like,
Speaker:no, they are not going to win.
Speaker:I'm going to do this.
Speaker:I'm going to figure this out.
Speaker:And so stubbornness,
Speaker:you know,
Speaker:I just don't quit.
Speaker:I have a don't quit attitude and it doesn't mean that
Speaker:I haven't had failures and that I haven't had to say,
Speaker:okay, it's time for a bubble bath and just whine and
Speaker:cry a little bit,
Speaker:get it over out of my system.
Speaker:And then next day I get up and get after it
Speaker:again. I guess that's pretty much,
Speaker:I mean,
Speaker:I don't know if that's necessarily one of those,
Speaker:like I'm kind of a bright and shiny reason,
Speaker:but that's mine is I just don't give up.
Speaker:You know,
Speaker:you would be surprised at how many people use the same
Speaker:word or they'll say that tenacity to continue or just,
Speaker:you know,
Speaker:whatever that persistence.
Speaker:So many people are using a similar answer to this question,
Speaker:which really is telling me that being a successful entrepreneur,
Speaker:you don't stop.
Speaker:You find the answer you find the way to go on.
Speaker:And interestingly enough,
Speaker:Kim, you'll enjoy this,
Speaker:my scope topic for today.
Speaker:I'm going to be talking about Seth Godin's book,
Speaker:the dip.
Speaker:And he talks in there about when you face a challenge
Speaker:and you face a struggle and possibly it's your finger about
Speaker:to press that start broadcast button.
Speaker:So many people quit their,
Speaker:you know,
Speaker:so many people will just stop and say,
Speaker:I can't,
Speaker:I just can't do it.
Speaker:Yeah. Well,
Speaker:you know,
Speaker:it's, it's easier to quit,
Speaker:right? I mean,
Speaker:when we get up,
Speaker:when we feel fear,
Speaker:you know,
Speaker:it's, and I'll just share my story real quick.
Speaker:As it relates to fear,
Speaker:I have kind of made fear my BFF,
Speaker:you know,
Speaker:if I feel fear and I'm like,
Speaker:wow, I don't know if I can do that.
Speaker:Hmm. That sounds like it's tough.
Speaker:I just kind of stood up because I'm like,
Speaker:okay, I'm exactly I need to be right now because I
Speaker:know if I push through,
Speaker:then there's something great on the other side,
Speaker:because that's always been the case for me.
Speaker:When I started Periscoping,
Speaker:for example,
Speaker:I was uncomfortable with that.
Speaker:I wasn't like,
Speaker:I didn't want to get on,
Speaker:you know,
Speaker:and worry about hair and makeup and what to say and
Speaker:tripping over my words.
Speaker:And you know,
Speaker:not having that perfection because I was a perfectionist and I
Speaker:was really concerned about that.
Speaker:But because I press through,
Speaker:there's been so many great things on the other side of
Speaker:that fear.
Speaker:So anytime you're feeling fear,
Speaker:or if you are thinking,
Speaker:well, this just isn't working out for me,
Speaker:it doesn't mean that where you are is going to work
Speaker:out. It means maybe you'll be turned around in,
Speaker:you know,
Speaker:go back a few paces or go down another path,
Speaker:but you just don't quit.
Speaker:I think that's a key.
Speaker:And I think it's interesting that you said that about other
Speaker:entrepreneurs, because the reality is there is not a successful entrepreneur
Speaker:on this planet that hasn't had failure.
Speaker:In fact,
Speaker:fail faster is my motto learn from your mistakes and you
Speaker:know, just keep pressing forward.
Speaker:I think that's a critical mindset for entrepreneurs that reach different
Speaker:levels of success,
Speaker:whether they're just getting started and they,
Speaker:you know,
Speaker:they'd create that first sale or,
Speaker:you know,
Speaker:they're at an extra thousand dollars a month or an extra
Speaker:5,000 or an extra 10,000.
Speaker:You know,
Speaker:we go through spells in our business,
Speaker:just keep pressing and keep pushing that fear to the curb.
Speaker:Absolutely do not quit.
Speaker:Whether it's a financial struggle or a technology struggle,
Speaker:girl or emotions,
Speaker:because you're just nervous know that the majority of people will
Speaker:stop at that point.
Speaker:So if you continue on,
Speaker:then you are marching yourself towards success.
Speaker:It might be a different Avenue you need to take,
Speaker:but there's always a solution.
Speaker:And as we were talking about before,
Speaker:that's where you have your support that we were talking about
Speaker:way in the beginning of this podcast,
Speaker:whether it's your faith,
Speaker:whether it's a spouse or a friend or a networking connections
Speaker:within your networking group,
Speaker:there are so many resources out there,
Speaker:online groups,
Speaker:you know,
Speaker:we're talking about,
Speaker:you know,
Speaker:social media.
Speaker:So right online,
Speaker:there are so many resources,
Speaker:but the whole point is,
Speaker:do not quit.
Speaker:All right.
Speaker:I got off on a tangent here,
Speaker:but can you tell we're both passionate about yeah,
Speaker:but I think it was really important to hear and it
Speaker:reinforces to all of us.
Speaker:Oh wait.
Speaker:So as you're working through your day,
Speaker:Kim in the office,
Speaker:is there a particular tool that you use to stay productive?
Speaker:We have actually started using a tool called Slack slack.com.
Speaker:That's S L a C k.com.
Speaker:And it is really streamlined our team communication made tracking conversations
Speaker:and finding things much easier.
Speaker:So I am actually loving that.
Speaker:And I think we're going to start using a tool called
Speaker:Trello as well.
Speaker:And I don't have much experience with that yet.
Speaker:I hesitate to even mention it,
Speaker:but I'm loving it so far.
Speaker:What is Trello do?
Speaker:Trello is a project management tool.
Speaker:So you can pop in and build out your projects.
Speaker:Like here's the to-do lists,
Speaker:assign tasks to certain people on your team.
Speaker:If you have a team,
Speaker:once things are completed,
Speaker:you can move it to another box.
Speaker:You know,
Speaker:these things are completed.
Speaker:These are still to do,
Speaker:and it's all visual.
Speaker:It looks very similar to a Pinterest board.
Speaker:So you can see everything in a visual way.
Speaker:And for me,
Speaker:that's important because I'm a visual person.
Speaker:So both of those tools are something that Slack highly recommend.
Speaker:Trello is something we're just starting with.
Speaker:And so far in loving it.
Speaker:And You'd use them as,
Speaker:as a combo is what you're saying In our case,
Speaker:we do yes,
Speaker:depending on,
Speaker:you know,
Speaker:whether like if you have a team,
Speaker:Slack is awesome.
Speaker:If you don't,
Speaker:you may not need Slack,
Speaker:but Trello might be a great way to manage your individual
Speaker:projects. Wonderful.
Speaker:And what book have you read lately that you think our
Speaker:listeners could find value in?
Speaker:Oh, stack of them.
Speaker:I, you know,
Speaker:for me that I,
Speaker:you know,
Speaker:people are constantly sending me their books.
Speaker:One that I am really liking lately that was just released
Speaker:in back is called hug your haters by Jay Bayer.
Speaker:It's basically how to embrace complaints and keep your customers,
Speaker:which I am really like in this book,
Speaker:it's got a great message and it would be something that
Speaker:I would recommend to the people listening suddenly because it's kind
Speaker:of got a different angle and it's so important,
Speaker:you know,
Speaker:so many times we're always stressing over the next customer,
Speaker:where do we find the next customer?
Speaker:You know?
Speaker:And the reality is if we just took care of our
Speaker:existing customers,
Speaker:they would bring us new customers.
Speaker:I agree with you.
Speaker:And I actually,
Speaker:I haven't read,
Speaker:hug your haters yet,
Speaker:but I love Jay Baer.
Speaker:I, you know,
Speaker:with his utility book and you're right,
Speaker:it's an absolutely different approach.
Speaker:So give biz listeners,
Speaker:don't assume that you know what this title is suggesting because
Speaker:it is a really different twist in terms of what they're
Speaker:talking about.
Speaker:It gave me a lot of thoughts for my business too.
Speaker:So I'm really glad that you brought that one on,
Speaker:have you read the whole thing already?
Speaker:Kim? I am about,
Speaker:Oh, probably three fourths of the way through.
Speaker:Sounds like I might need to be getting that one too.
Speaker:I think we had,
Speaker:I think he'd mentioned on this podcast that it's going to
Speaker:go audio too.
Speaker:So which leads right into what I wanted to say next,
Speaker:which is as you know,
Speaker:gift biz listeners,
Speaker:you guys like listening to audio,
Speaker:I've teamed up with audible.
Speaker:So if you would like to get hug your haters as
Speaker:an audio book,
Speaker:all you need to do is go to gift biz,
Speaker:book.com and make a selection.
Speaker:And my guess is if it's not up there right now,
Speaker:it will be shortly.
Speaker:And there are a ton of really great books available on
Speaker:audio. So check that out,
Speaker:Kim, how can our listeners best get in touch with you?
Speaker:Now our show notes page is going to give a whole
Speaker:slew of platforms.
Speaker:But if there were two places that you would have people
Speaker:come to interact with you,
Speaker:what would they be?
Speaker:I'll just tag onto what you were saying about audible.
Speaker:My book is actually,
Speaker:and an audible format now,
Speaker:and you can find it.
Speaker:Of course.
Speaker:I don't know if it's on audible.com,
Speaker:but it's definitely on Amazon is an audible download.
Speaker:So that might be something.
Speaker:Did you record it yourself?
Speaker:I did not record it.
Speaker:I actually chose the voice over because I didn't have time
Speaker:honestly, to do the recording.
Speaker:And my publisher said,
Speaker:Hey, you know,
Speaker:we'll take on assume the cost of this because the book
Speaker:sold very well and they decided to turn it into an
Speaker:audio, which was awesome.
Speaker:I was excited about that.
Speaker:Well, I have read your book all the way through and
Speaker:I will give it a golden star.
Speaker:So anybody who has not read that book will the real,
Speaker:you please stand up.
Speaker:Absolutely positively.
Speaker:Get it.
Speaker:Now you can do in paperback and audio.
Speaker:So there you go.
Speaker:Yes. I only mentioned it because you'd mentioned the audio version.
Speaker:So that was pretty,
Speaker:pretty cool.
Speaker:But to get back to the question is where can you
Speaker:reach me?
Speaker:I am literally everywhere on social media,
Speaker:on all the platforms as my name,
Speaker:Kim Garst.

Speaker:year. That's what's in my box.
Speaker:There you go.
Speaker:Nothing like a smart goal there,
Speaker:Kim. Yeah.
Speaker:I have to be able to do that 10,000
Speaker:business owners and help them double their business,
Speaker:double their bottom lines in the next year.
