We've been working at this for a little while,

and now here you are.

Speaker:

So our listeners know we like to start our conversation off

Speaker:

by having you describe your motivational candle.

Speaker:

It's a little bit of an indirect way for us to

Speaker:

get to know you.

Speaker:

So if you were to describe your ideal motivational candle,

what color would it be and what would be the quote

Speaker:

on your candle?

Speaker:

Oh, well I would have to have two colors,

Speaker:

which I would say purple and gold and there'd have to

Speaker:

be some glitter to it as well.

Speaker:

And the quote that I would have on there would be

just do it.

Speaker:

And why do you pick that quote?

Speaker:

That has been a quote that I think I've always,

Speaker:

it's just always stuck with me.

Speaker:

A lot of things in my life I've had to do

Speaker:

on my own and go for it.

Speaker:

And I feel like everyone can have the power to do

Speaker:

things and accomplish things that they want,

Speaker:

but they have to just do it.

Speaker:

It's through action.

Speaker:

Sometimes we overthink things and can be indecisive on stuff,

Speaker:

and I have all these great ideas,

Speaker:

but the only way to make something happen is by just

Speaker:

believing in yourself and just doing it.

Speaker:

And you have to go for it if it's works or

Speaker:

doesn't, I feel like it's just a lesson in life and

Speaker:

it gets you onto the path where you need to go.

Speaker:

So you have to take action in order to achieve something

Speaker:

that you want.

Speaker:

Yeah. So one way or another,

Speaker:

if you have an idea or you have something you want

Speaker:

to do,

Speaker:

don't overthink it.

Speaker:

Like you're saying,

Speaker:

just get going,

Speaker:

make some action,

Speaker:

move, move forward.

Speaker:

Exactly. That's the only way things are going to happen and

Speaker:

move in life.

Speaker:

Let's talk a little bit about beauty services.

Speaker:

How did that all come about?

Speaker:

Give us a little backstory behind that.

Speaker:

Yeah, so It was actually a manager for Mac cosmetics.

Speaker:

About seven years before I decided to open up gen Zs.

Speaker:

When I graduated school for aesthetics,

Speaker:

I always had kind of a dream envision that I wanted

Speaker:

to have my own place,

Speaker:

but I started working for Mac and then got into management

Speaker:

with them and was with them for seven years.

Speaker:

And it was a great learning experience,

Speaker:

especially with the business end and running multi-million dollar counters,

Speaker:

but it was very stressful and I wanted something of my

Speaker:

own. So my friends and family supported me and I had

Speaker:

an opportunity.

Speaker:

There was a space down the street from where I lived

Speaker:

and I just went for it.

Speaker:

And it was literally open probably within about three months of

Speaker:

the idea of even thinking to go ahead and do it.

Speaker:

So that was about nine years ago.

Speaker:

Okay. Stop here for a second.

Speaker:

What actions,

Speaker:

if we have someone out there who's listening,

Speaker:

who is in a similar situation of you nine years ago,

Speaker:

let's say,

Speaker:

what were the first actions then that you took?

Speaker:

You saw the opportunity,

Speaker:

you saw the location,

Speaker:

you're going to go for it.

Speaker:

What are those?

Speaker:

Just do it actions that you take at that point?

Speaker:

Honestly, I've never had my own business.

Speaker:

So I had no idea what I was doing.

Speaker:

So I contacted the city right away.

Speaker:

I did a lot of research online.

Speaker:

I contacted the chamber of commerce.

Speaker:

Like a lot of those organizations were great tools for me

Speaker:

to at least get like logistics in line of what do

Speaker:

I illegally need to do to have my own business and

Speaker:

what do I need to do to get started?

Speaker:

So I found a lot of resources online.

Speaker:

Like I said,

Speaker:

I used a lot of the city and the chamber resources

Speaker:

to get me going,

Speaker:

just to establish that end.

Speaker:

Cause this was all very new.

Speaker:

And I had no idea what I was doing and how

Speaker:

to even start and set it up and create this place

Speaker:

of my own.

Speaker:

I love the fact that you reached out to your local

Speaker:

community because that's accessible to everybody.

Speaker:

You didn't try to do it all yourself and know everything,

Speaker:

right. But between people who are in your community and then

Speaker:

online, you found other people who have done things or have

Speaker:

information for you and use that to guide you moving forward,

Speaker:

which is really smart versus trying to create something in the

Speaker:

vacuum. Yeah,

Speaker:

it was great because I had no clue and you know,

Speaker:

you needed that help.

Speaker:

And honestly,

Speaker:

everything was there.

Speaker:

All the information was there,

Speaker:

it just had to seek it out.

Speaker:

And then I was able to get started pretty quickly period,

Speaker:

with the story then.

Speaker:

So I started on my own and it was just myself

Speaker:

doing all my services.

Speaker:

So I offered pretty much all makeup and waxing facials at

Speaker:

that point.

Speaker:

And it was great.

Speaker:

I had a lot of following from Mac.

Speaker:

I had a lot of my family and friends and community

Speaker:

since it was in the area I grew up.

Speaker:

So I had a lot of great clients to start with

Speaker:

and a lot of support.

Speaker:

And then I ended up adding nail services.

Speaker:

So I've had my now technician with me for about eight

Speaker:

years now,

Speaker:

Tina, and now we have a part-time hair person and the

Speaker:

businesses even expanded with myself,

Speaker:

getting into more health and wellness about four to five years

Speaker:

ago and offering Reiki services now and spray tan.

Speaker:

And we pretty much are a full service salon Along the

Speaker:

way. You've found areas in terms of what maybe your customers

Speaker:

were looking for in terms of services.

Speaker:

And then also things that you wanted to,

Speaker:

It definitely has evolved very much.

Speaker:

So over the past nine years,

Speaker:

it's not the same as how it was when I first

Speaker:

started, but it was great.

Speaker:

I mean,

Speaker:

you want that to naturally happen.

Speaker:

And it did,

Speaker:

it was a natural progression.

Speaker:

So we were able to offer more to clients and basically

Speaker:

getting a lot of their input too,

Speaker:

to see what my clients needed.

Speaker:

I wanted to be able to service them the best that

Speaker:

I could.

Speaker:

Right. Right.

Speaker:

And so what advice would you have given yourself what,

Speaker:

you know now versus what you knew then,

Speaker:

what guidance would you have?

Speaker:

Well, it's not easy if you're going to have your stressful

Speaker:

days, but you have to just really look at your goals

Speaker:

and know what you want and you have to hang in

Speaker:

there, you need to reach out to others for help.

Speaker:

There's always people that can help you.

Speaker:

You don't have to do it all by yourself.

Speaker:

You're not alone.

Speaker:

And I think that's huge to just get guidance and,

Speaker:

and also have other people who are business owners is that

Speaker:

peer group to really be able to reach out to them

Speaker:

for that support because they know what you're going through.

Speaker:

So I think that's something that I wish I would have

Speaker:

done a lot more of in the beginning.

Speaker:

And I think I did,

Speaker:

but I even do it more.

Speaker:

So now,

Speaker:

even after being open for nine years,

Speaker:

I feel like I really seek out the help of others,

Speaker:

friends who are business owners to give me that support and

Speaker:

ideas and look at things a little bit differently.

Speaker:

That in a way I may not to really help me

Speaker:

grow. So I think that's really important.

Speaker:

You don't have to do everything on your own and you're

Speaker:

going to make mistakes.

Speaker:

You're going to learn things along the way and it's okay,

Speaker:

that's going to happen,

Speaker:

but it's just going to make you better.

Speaker:

It's going to make your business better and you just have

Speaker:

to move on and,

Speaker:

you know,

Speaker:

use it as a great lesson in life.

Speaker:

Great advice reaching out in.

Speaker:

We don't have to reinvent the wheel.

Speaker:

Others have probably done what we're trying to do.

Speaker:

So use that knowledge and learning that others have had for

Speaker:

you to be able to create and move forward with whatever

Speaker:

you're attempting.

Speaker:

Absolutely. Let's continue on now and enter in Brazilian jujitsu.

Speaker:

Where did that come from?

Speaker:

So I have been training for about the past three years

Speaker:

now, about four years ago,

Speaker:

a friend of mine took me to a local gym and

Speaker:

I was just lifting and doing boxing and stuff more for

Speaker:

just Health purposes or for health.

Speaker:

Yeah, I had started really changing my lifestyle.

Speaker:

I would say about almost nine years ago,

Speaker:

actually, when I opened gen Z,

Speaker:

that's when I really started going to the gym and being

Speaker:

more conscious of my health.

Speaker:

Cause I was in my mid twenties and had lived probably

Speaker:

not the best like healthiest lifestyle.

Speaker:

And I just wanted to change that.

Speaker:

So one of my best friends got me into working out

Speaker:

and really got me into a regimen.

Speaker:

And when it was four years ago that I had switched

Speaker:

gyms and went with my other friend,

Speaker:

I started going to the warehouse boxing club in Highland park.

Speaker:

And my now coach is a personal trainer there still.

Speaker:

And we were doing lifting and boxing sessions and he was

Speaker:

talking about this thing,

Speaker:

Brazilian jujitsu that he did.

Speaker:

And I was like,

Speaker:

what is this?

Speaker:

I've never heard of it.

Speaker:

And he was like,

Speaker:

I think you should try it.

Speaker:

I think you'd like it.

Speaker:

So we did a few private sessions and then try to

Speaker:

class with his coach and his team when he was like,

Speaker:

if you really want to get good at this and do

Speaker:

this, you know,

Speaker:

you need to join like a school,

Speaker:

join a club team.

Speaker:

So the rest is history.

Speaker:

I really fell in love with it right away.

Speaker:

And I've been training ever since.

Speaker:

Did you fall in love with it?

Speaker:

And did you join the club with the idea that you

Speaker:

were going to start competing and meddling and all of that?

Speaker:

Not really.

Speaker:

I just,

Speaker:

I really liked it,

Speaker:

which took me by surprise because I would have never envisioned

Speaker:

myself doing something like this,

Speaker:

this type of sport.

Speaker:

And I was training a lot.

Speaker:

Like it became a very important part of my life quickly,

Speaker:

I would say,

Speaker:

but it was probably about a year after that.

Speaker:

I did my first competition and I just went in there

Speaker:

and my coach still says like,

Speaker:

he's like,

Speaker:

you just went in there,

Speaker:

not nervous at all.

Speaker:

Just the down when it's thought,

Speaker:

like it was like no big deal.

Speaker:

And I took gold.

Speaker:

Great. In all seriousness in front of the whole world,

Speaker:

whoever's listening,

Speaker:

you weren't nervous.

Speaker:

You know,

Speaker:

I don't think I had anything to prove at that point.

Speaker:

And I didn't really know what to expect and I didn't

Speaker:

have all the pressure on myself.

Speaker:

This was something I had just been doing for a year.

Speaker:

I never had any martial arts experience or I was never

Speaker:

in any sports really except for in junior high.

Speaker:

So I ha I didn't have any of this experience.

Speaker:

So I couldn't really be that hard on myself.

Speaker:

I didn't know what to expect.

Speaker:

So I was going out there just to have fun.

Speaker:

And it was just all the newness of it was a

Speaker:

little nerve wracking,

Speaker:

but I just went out there.

Speaker:

And next thing I know,

Speaker:

I, I think I had three matches and I won them

Speaker:

all. Wow.

Speaker:

So I took gold and it was like the greatest day

Speaker:

ever. Oh my gosh.

Speaker:

That is so cool.

Speaker:

All right.

Speaker:

Now you're doing more matches and I know you get really

Speaker:

excited and there's certainly higher level matches now.

Speaker:

Yeah. How are you feeling going into those at this point?

Speaker:

Because now you do have expectations for you Yourself.

Speaker:

I'm sure.

Speaker:

Yes. I am very hard on myself and I get very

Speaker:

frustrated. There's definitely more pressure my team,

Speaker:

my coaches.

Speaker:

They're awesome.

Speaker:

They're great.

Speaker:

My family,

Speaker:

everyone, even my clients,

Speaker:

my friends,

Speaker:

my fans now,

Speaker:

you know,

Speaker:

that love seeing me do this.

Speaker:

It doesn't matter if I win or lose.

Speaker:

They know me.

Speaker:

They know how much it means to me in the passion

Speaker:

and love I have for it.

Speaker:

But I put a lot of that pressure on myself.

Speaker:

And I think I've actually in the past two years,

Speaker:

Sue, I was counting this the other day.

Speaker:

I think I've done like 16 competitions,

Speaker:

17, something like that.

Speaker:

But the last competition I did the spring open,

Speaker:

I took double gold and I had five matches.

Speaker:

They were probably some of the best matches that I felt

Speaker:

like I fought the best that I ever did.

Speaker:

I felt like spot on.

Speaker:

It was great.

Speaker:

It was awesome.

Speaker:

So now I'm coming into less than a month away.

Speaker:

I have the Chicago summer open August 13th.

Speaker:

And I'm feeling that pressure now because as great of a

Speaker:

moment as that was,

Speaker:

I'm like,

Speaker:

Oh great.

Speaker:

Now I have to,

Speaker:

now I have to make sure I can do it again.

Speaker:

Well, you know,

Speaker:

Fluke, because look,

Speaker:

all those matches and you have metal to lot cause I've

Speaker:

been seeing it on Facebook.

Speaker:

So talk to us a little bit about how you stay

Speaker:

motivated because clearly you're in big time training mode.

Speaker:

So I train jujitsu about six times a week and then

Speaker:

I do some lifting,

Speaker:

I would say like twice a week,

Speaker:

really though,

Speaker:

just to,

Speaker:

I do things intentionally to help my jujitsu get better.

Speaker:

Not I don't lift to just lift,

Speaker:

but it makes me stronger for certain positions and training jujitsu.

Speaker:

And then I really make sure I have a lot of

Speaker:

time for recovery and like stretching out and rolling out because

Speaker:

I have to take care of my body because it's very,

Speaker:

I mean,

Speaker:

you're using your entire body and it's very physically demanding.

Speaker:

So I am very grateful that I get to,

Speaker:

you know,

Speaker:

with having my own business,

Speaker:

I can schedule my training around my clients and vice versa.

Speaker:

So it's become very important to me and I've,

Speaker:

you know,

Speaker:

become a jiu-jitsu athlete and to be able to live out,

Speaker:

both of my passions is really pretty cool.

Speaker:

I just stay focused and determined because it's something that I

Speaker:

love so much.

Speaker:

And I'm so passionate about that some days.

Speaker:

Yeah. I,

Speaker:

you know,

Speaker:

I may not want to train or I might not want

Speaker:

to lift or go to the gym and I really have

Speaker:

that focus and drive and determination that I think I'm just

Speaker:

very self motivated,

Speaker:

which I know a lot of people may not be,

Speaker:

but I just feel like I'm,

Speaker:

that's a characteristic I've always had even just starting my business

Speaker:

and with jujitsu,

Speaker:

I just always want to achieve,

Speaker:

and I keep setting goals for myself.

Speaker:

So I think that keeps me determined and focused to be

Speaker:

on to the next.

Speaker:

So those days when you're like,

Speaker:

Oh, the last thing I want to do,

Speaker:

it's snowing outside.

Speaker:

The last thing I wanted to do is get up and

Speaker:

go to the gym.

Speaker:

Is your eye on the goal?

Speaker:

Like the next event,

Speaker:

the next competition is that what gets you?

Speaker:

You know,

Speaker:

I'm getting out,

Speaker:

I'm going no matter what.

Speaker:

So you really need to focus on that training.

Speaker:

And that's what I'm always like going for.

Speaker:

And it's like,

Speaker:

I know these competitions come up and I register for these

Speaker:

competitions knowing,

Speaker:

and it's like,

Speaker:

I need to be in that mindset four to six weeks

Speaker:

out of competition.

Speaker:

You're really working towards that.

Speaker:

So that just keeps you really driven if you may not

Speaker:

feel like it.

Speaker:

And then you get there.

Speaker:

It's like once you get on the mat,

Speaker:

that's just my happy place.

Speaker:

You feel so good after training.

Speaker:

And it's probably the best mind,

Speaker:

body, soul therapy ever,

Speaker:

and has gotten me through some pretty hard times in life.

Speaker:

Well, this has been fabulous so far,

Speaker:

Jen, because you've laid the groundwork in terms of gen Z's

Speaker:

and getting established with that.

Speaker:

And now we also know the Brazilian jujitsu side in terms

Speaker:

of how everything's formed and your success to date.

Speaker:

And it's really cool.

Speaker:

Like you were talking about how it all can balance each

Speaker:

other so that you can do both because I know you

Speaker:

clearly love both and now.

Speaker:

And one of the really interesting things that we haven't done

Speaker:

on a podcast yet is talk about how you're pivoting,

Speaker:

how both of these two things are now leading you into

Speaker:

yet an additional direction,

Speaker:

which I think is so interesting and right up your alley

Speaker:

absolutely positively.

Speaker:

I'm so excited to see what's happening here,

Speaker:

but can you describe that a little bit now for everybody?

Speaker:

Yes. So I,

Speaker:

I have found over the past few years,

Speaker:

and I think just from hearing clients and family and people,

Speaker:

just my goal in life has always been to help others.

Speaker:

And I think I've done that a lot as an esthetician

Speaker:

and make-up artist,

Speaker:

you act as I want to say a therapist to some

Speaker:

and you know,

Speaker:

a healer to,

Speaker:

you know,

Speaker:

cause you want to make people feel beautiful inside and out,

Speaker:

and you're always there for your clients.

Speaker:

And especially now through this,

Speaker:

it's kind of shifted things a little bit and a lot

Speaker:

of people are now coming to me for more health tips,

Speaker:

nutrition, fitness,

Speaker:

and that's what I've been,

Speaker:

you know,

Speaker:

my life has become and I've been posting about more.

Speaker:

So now I really want to be able to help others

Speaker:

learn how to live their happy,

Speaker:

healthy lifestyle and give them tools and resources to get where

Speaker:

they want to be,

Speaker:

whatever it may be,

Speaker:

not necessarily just like me and you have to be a

Speaker:

Brazilian jujitsu athlete,

Speaker:

but just in any way or form that they be living

Speaker:

a happier,

Speaker:

healthier life.

Speaker:

I want to be there to be able to be their

Speaker:

cheerleader, be their coach,

Speaker:

help them through whatever it may be at that time that

Speaker:

they'll need help with There's two interesting things that you just

Speaker:

talked about.

Speaker:

The first thing is that you had people you already knew

Speaker:

were coming to you,

Speaker:

even though you don't offer that really,

Speaker:

you know,

Speaker:

as a service at all at this point,

Speaker:

I know you're working towards,

Speaker:

you know,

Speaker:

what that's gonna look like,

Speaker:

but they already spread recognized and saw that in you and

Speaker:

were coming to you for advice.

Speaker:

Right? So give biz listeners think about that.

Speaker:

What do you and your friends talk about on the side?

Speaker:

What do they come to?

Speaker:

You wanting your help with that could open up something just

Speaker:

like it did with Jen,

Speaker:

something that you possibly hadn't considered before.

Speaker:

The second thing Jen,

Speaker:

that I thought was really interesting is that people knew more

Speaker:

and more about you having this knowledge and having the passion

Speaker:

for the whole healthier lifestyle,

Speaker:

all that from posting on social media.

Speaker:

Absolutely. And I had to make myself a little bit more

Speaker:

vulnerable and I put things out there and had to just

Speaker:

come to the conclusion that it doesn't really matter what other

Speaker:

people think you have to be comfortable with yourself.

Speaker:

And I put things out there because I have so many

Speaker:

people that tell me how much seeing my posts inspires them

Speaker:

and motivates them.

Speaker:

And if I can help somebody feel better about themselves or

Speaker:

make that change or,

Speaker:

you know,

Speaker:

going into a positive direction,

Speaker:

that's completely worth it to me.

Speaker:

People have seen from nine years ago,

Speaker:

I was at my heaviest.

Speaker:

I want to say I was probably at like 230 pounds

Speaker:

and I was never like that on my life.

Speaker:

It was just,

Speaker:

that was like my mid twenties heaviest point.

Speaker:

And I now sit at around one 65 to one 68.

Speaker:

So, and you're tall.

Speaker:

Oh yeah.

Speaker:

I mean,

Speaker:

I'm tall.

Speaker:

I have a lot of muscle,

Speaker:

you know,

Speaker:

I, I have to make weight for certain competitions and stuff,

Speaker:

but I have maintained and lost all of that weight over

Speaker:

so many years.

Speaker:

And it's been such a positive thing for me,

Speaker:

but I still live my life and can enjoy and love

Speaker:

all the benefits that I get from it.

Speaker:

And this was pre Brazilian jujitsu that I started losing all

Speaker:

this weight and I started on this healthy track.

Speaker:

either the past three years I've really taken it a step

further. But I think from my experience with that,

and now living life as more of an athlete,

it's a lot easier for me to be able to give

people advice.

And I know a lot of things that work just through

my own experience.

So I love being able to help others achieve their goals,

whatever they may be.

Speaker:

Wonderful. So what kind of advice are they taught either talking

weight loss or they talking athletic training or what types of

Speaker:

topics are you seeing people asking about A lot of weight

Speaker:

loss and nutrition.

Speaker:

I've had a lot of clients tell me they want my

Speaker:

recipe is they see me posting food with time on my

Speaker:

Instagram and Facebook.

Speaker:

So they really,

Speaker:

me ideas.

Speaker:

They were like,

Speaker:

you know,

Speaker:

I want to see recipes.

Speaker:

That's really helpful for me when you post that.

Speaker:

So I'm like,

Speaker:

okay, so now you and I need to talk about this.

Speaker:

This is another Avenue that I didn't even think about with

Speaker:

the site is putting recipes out there.

Speaker:

Something as simple as that,

Speaker:

that I always do,

Speaker:

but just making it,

Speaker:

you know,

Speaker:

in a easier format,

Speaker:

more accessible for them to see.

Speaker:

And you know,

Speaker:

a lot of fitness tips.

Speaker:

I have clients who are wanting me to help train them

Speaker:

or giving them ideas of what they can,

Speaker:

how they can incorporate fitness into their lifestyle.

Speaker:

A lot of people I think I try and I don't

Speaker:

want to say I'm perfect.

Speaker:

I'm not in being positive all of the time,

Speaker:

but I like to shed a lot of positivity and I'm

Speaker:

very for believing in yourself and being able to accomplish all

Speaker:

your goals and dreams and dreaming big.

Speaker:

And I think people look to me for a lot of

Speaker:

that motivation and inspiration because they know that I like to

Speaker:

put a lot of that out there.

Speaker:

So they look for that guidance as well.

Speaker:

And I think a lot of stress relief,

Speaker:

too, all of that is part of living,

Speaker:

you know,

Speaker:

a healthy,

Speaker:

balanced lifestyle and live the happiest life you can be and

Speaker:

be the happiest version of yourself,

Speaker:

She's loving doing to people who are needing those types of

things. It's very exciting.

I know you're midstream in terms of planning,

considering and thinking,

but it's nice for everybody catch you right at this time,

Speaker:

as you're considering,

Speaker:

and it's evolving,

Speaker:

you know,

Speaker:

you've already got established businesses,

Speaker:

you've already are super successful with your sport and now molding

Speaker:

what that's gonna look like in the future.

Speaker:

It's very cool.

Speaker:

Just to listen to you talking about it as you're on

Speaker:

your journey,

Speaker:

you're in the middle of this portion of the journey,

Speaker:

Right? Yes.

Speaker:

Yes I am.

Speaker:

But I'm excited.

Speaker:

It's all good.

Speaker:

And it's,

Speaker:

it's just,

Speaker:

you know,

Speaker:

I've life is just crazy.

Speaker:

It's so fun.

Speaker:

Like you just never know where you're going to end up

Speaker:

and all of this.

Speaker:

Like I still it's so surreal.

Speaker:

I can't believe I'm actually doing it and it's become such

Speaker:

a huge part of my life,

Speaker:

but it really has.

Speaker:

And I love it.

Speaker:

And just being able to inspire others,

Speaker:

especially when I want to help others.

Speaker:

I want to help everyone,

Speaker:

but especially being a good role model for women and you

Speaker:

know, there's not as many women in the sport.

Speaker:

So I feel like we all really have to stick together

Speaker:

to be able to empower others,

Speaker:

to show that you can have it all.

Speaker:

You can do anything you put your mind to.

Speaker:

And it's great too,

Speaker:

because now I'm helping my coach teach kids classes and getting

Speaker:

to work with the younger girls,

Speaker:

just really being in,

Speaker:

serving as that role model for them to know that,

Speaker:

you know,

Speaker:

they can have anything they want them to accomplish at all.

Speaker:

All right,

Speaker:

real quick.

Speaker:

We're talking about everything that's so,

Speaker:

and I want people to understand that there's always roadblocks and

Speaker:

challenges along the way.

Speaker:

Can you bring up some situation you had?

Speaker:

I don't know if it's gen Z is,

Speaker:

I don't know if it's jujitsu or now where you are

Speaker:

in this uncertainty as you mold,

Speaker:

what it's going to be for the future could be anything,

Speaker:

but can you bring us to a place where you were

Speaker:

challenged and you know,

Speaker:

you're trying to figure out what to do and how you

Speaker:

overcame that situation.

Speaker:

Can it be in a personal level or was It,

Speaker:

it can be anything you want?

Speaker:

I think one of the biggest challenges that affected me in

Speaker:

all my different roles was personally going through my divorce,

Speaker:

which was a very hard time in life,

Speaker:

but I really think it evolved me and made me stronger.

Speaker:

And it took a lot to get to the point where

Speaker:

we are now,

Speaker:

which is we get along great and are better friends than

Speaker:

ever, which is exactly how I wanted it to be.

Speaker:

But you learn a lot about yourself and there's a lot

Speaker:

of growth.

Speaker:

And I mean,

Speaker:

my business and jujitsu really got me through that time wholeheartedly,

Speaker:

but it was a lot of different emotions and just trying

Speaker:

to stay strong and positive and following my gut and knowing

Speaker:

that I was making the right decision,

Speaker:

you really have to just trust yourself.

Speaker:

Even those things can be really hard.

Speaker:

And even with gen DS and owning your own business,

Speaker:

it's not always easy.

Speaker:

There's times where it's slower and you get nervous and worried.

Speaker:

And am I going to make rent this month?

Speaker:

And you know,

Speaker:

there's always so many issues that can come up,

Speaker:

but you just have to stay positive and trust yourself and

Speaker:

your gut and believe in yourself and know that you're doing

Speaker:

the right thing.

Speaker:

And that everything truly happens for a reason.

Speaker:

If something is meant to be,

Speaker:

it will be,

Speaker:

if it's not,

Speaker:

you have to learn to kind of let go and make

Speaker:

peace with it and realize that there's a much better path

Speaker:

waiting for you.

Speaker:

So I think definitely over the past several years,

Speaker:

I've grown and evolved into a better person.

Speaker:

And it's brought me to where I am today.

Speaker:

All these experiences in life.

Speaker:

Yeah, Really what you're saying is believe in yourself,

Speaker:

believe that you're strong enough.

Speaker:

You can do what you are trying to accomplish,

Speaker:

trust your gut,

Speaker:

that you're going in the right direction for yourself.

Speaker:

And then taking action,

Speaker:

which could mean changing something.

Speaker:

Look at how you're doing with gen Z is adding in

Speaker:

additional services to continue to grow the business.

Speaker:

All of that I've changed.

Speaker:

So therefore my business is going to change and evolve,

Speaker:

which is okay.

Speaker:

You have to make changes that are going to make you

Speaker:

happier. It doesn't always have to be a certain way.

Speaker:

And I think we always think that it needs to be

Speaker:

cookie cutter and it needs to stay a certain way to

Speaker:

be successful.

Speaker:

Or if it is successful,

Speaker:

you're scared to make any changes because then maybe it won't

Speaker:

be, but you just have to trust yourself and you have

Speaker:

to live the life that you can.

Speaker:

And you need to do things that make you happy,

Speaker:

because if you're doing things that aren't,

Speaker:

that's not good for anyone,

Speaker:

and that's just going to show in your work and your

Speaker:

day-to-day. So I think it's really important and I'm grateful for

Speaker:

that, that I'm able to do that,

Speaker:

but now it is evolving and I have concerns and you

Speaker:

know, I'm nervous about things sometimes,

Speaker:

but I know that this is the direction I'm meant to

Speaker:

go in and then it's all gonna work out and it's

Speaker:

going to be okay.

Speaker:

Absolutely. And I would also say,

Speaker:

you know,

Speaker:

you'd mentioned cookie cutter approach.

Speaker:

I would endorse everybody not to take a cookie cutter approach

Speaker:

because then what are you?

Speaker:

You're another baking shop.

Speaker:

You're another jewelry maker.

Speaker:

You're another aesthetician.

Speaker:

If I can learn how to say that properly,

Speaker:

Jen and I practiced before,

Speaker:

before we got on,

Speaker:

but to be yourself and to look in yourself and find

Speaker:

the qualities that make you unique and then present those to

Speaker:

the world are what a portion of the world will fall

Speaker:

in. Love with you about if you're just the same as

Speaker:

the next person down the street,

Speaker:

why would they come to you?

Speaker:

You have to take,

Speaker:

what's unique about yourself.

Speaker:

That's why people love you and are going to come to

Speaker:

you. Don't be afraid to be yourself.

Speaker:

I mean,

Speaker:

it's so funny that now my clients are so accustomed to

Speaker:

the fact that I train and I compete and it's so

Speaker:

important to me and it's my life.

Speaker:

And they know that they can get in when I have

Speaker:

availability and they have no problem with it,

Speaker:

but they're just like you do what?

Speaker:

Like in the beginning it was so funny.

Speaker:

And they're like,

Speaker:

I think you're the nicest bad-ass that I know.

Speaker:

Like I don't even,

Speaker:

I don't even get it.

Speaker:

They want to know more about it.

Speaker:

They want pictures.

Speaker:

And I have pictures that gen Z is with a lot

Speaker:

of my competitions and trainings and all of that.

Speaker:

And they just love seeing it and they think it's so

Speaker:

cool and interesting,

Speaker:

but it's so different than what anyone else does.

Speaker:

So they really appreciate,

Speaker:

and like to be part of that world and know what's

Speaker:

going on and support me fully.

Speaker:

So I'm super grateful for that.

Definitely think my calendars and my planners and my work calendar

that I always use keeps everything my life just in check,

because I do have to make sure that my schedule is

consistent and open at the right appropriate times for clients to

be able to schedule in.

And when I'm not going to be available because I'm training.

So you keep everything on one big master calendar.

Yes, pretty much.

And is it a calendar that's on your phone or is

it written or how do you do that?

I use it on my phone.

It's actually like a scheduling calendar that I use,
