Speaker:Now today's show falls right in line with this conversation we're
Speaker:money. I know this can be a really heavy topic,
Speaker:right? We've talked about it before.
Speaker:I know you may feel like numbers are confusing or you
Speaker:grew up in a household where money was limited.
Speaker:So the topic is super scary to your very survival.
Speaker:I've even heard from some,
Speaker:maybe you that you're afraid to make too much money because
Speaker:you may lose friends or not fit in with those closest
Speaker:to you anymore.
Speaker:There is so much emotion around this,
Speaker:but what if you could become confident and be the controller
Speaker:behind your money situation?
Speaker:And I'm not saying to keep striving for more and more
Speaker:and more,
Speaker:I mean,
Speaker:knowing and managing dollars.
Speaker:So they work for you and the life you want to
Speaker:lead. I'm thinking we should just dive right in and I've
Speaker:been excited to say this here is Johnny today.
Speaker:We're going to be talking with Johnny McWilliams.
Speaker:Johnny is a certified Ramsey financial coach,
Speaker:helping people with their relationship with money.
Speaker:After working in the areas of a real estate tax preparation,
Speaker:insurance, financial investing,
Speaker:and completing an MBA.
Speaker:He decided not to sell financial products.
Speaker:He's taking a different approach to money.
Speaker:Johnny's passionate about providing practical biblical principles to guide his clients
Speaker:as they zero in on their financial target through his blog.
Speaker:Zero in on this Johnny writes about the seven specific targets
Speaker:everybody needs to focus on.
Speaker:He teaches his readers to have a purposeful point of view.
Speaker:When it comes to the financial resources,
Speaker:they have the privilege to manage.
Speaker:He believes that money is merely a tool used through the
Speaker:journey of pursuing one's unique purpose.
Speaker:Johnny, welcome to the gift biz unwrapped podcast.
Speaker:Thank you so much,
Speaker:Sue. I am so excited to dive into the money mindset,
Speaker:but before we do,
Speaker:I've got a traditional question here.
Speaker:And that is for you to share with our listeners a
Speaker:little bit of something different about you,
Speaker:and that is describing yourself through a motivational candle.
Speaker:So if you were to tell us what your candle would
Speaker:look like by color and quote,
Speaker:what would that be?
Speaker:Johnny? Well purple of course,
Speaker:because purple combines the calm stability of blue and the fierce
Speaker:energy of red and the color purple is often associated with
Speaker:royalty nobility,
Speaker:luxury, power,
Speaker:ambition, and purple though.
Speaker:It also represents wealth and wisdom many times.
Speaker:And if you follow along on my Instagram,
Speaker:one of my themes is actually the intersection of wealth and
Speaker:wisdom. So purple is the color.
Speaker:And the quote I would say is what I usually say.
Speaker:If someone asks me,
Speaker:how are you doing?
Speaker:I always say blessed beyond belief because I am definitely blessed.
Speaker:And it's usually beyond belief because I can't believe all the
Speaker:things that are just so awesome in the world and the
Speaker:great country we live in.
Speaker:So that's my expression.
Speaker:Bless beyond belief.
Speaker:I love it.
Speaker:I actually thought you were going to say green for your
Speaker:color. And just because of financial,
Speaker:I don't know why that would be just an assumption,
Speaker:but I like yours way better.
Speaker:So that's perfect.
Speaker:My company colors are actually purple and green.
Speaker:So purple is the primary greens the second.
Speaker:Well, there you go.
Speaker:So I was kind of right.
Speaker:Anyway. All right.
Speaker:So talk us through how you got to where you are
Speaker:and this whole idea of taking a different approach to money.
Speaker:So share a little bit of your backstory with them.
Speaker:Yeah, absolutely.
Speaker:Well, it goes way back,
Speaker:cause I've always been kind of a serial entrepreneur.
Speaker:I remember my first company when I was like a teenager
Speaker:and I come from a creator and a maker background I
Speaker:started off with,
Speaker:as a printer goes back when we had printing presses,
Speaker:we made things by putting ink on paper and I was
Speaker:really into printing and I used to make a lot of
Speaker:crafts and a lot of different things for people,
Speaker:for their businesses,
Speaker:for their personal life.
Speaker:And I went through several different companies.
Speaker:One of the companies,
Speaker:actually, I was making mugs and special design mugs with different
Speaker:quotes on it.
Speaker:I'm actually drinking tea out of one of them right now.
Speaker:And I called them joy mugs.
Speaker:Then something happened when I was actually in my fifth company
Speaker:and everything fell apart.
Speaker:I financially collapsed.
Speaker:I ended up getting my house for a closed my car
Speaker:repossessed. I claimed bankruptcy.
Speaker:Chapter seven ended in divorce.
Speaker:It was actually a terrible time.
Speaker:And I kind of had to wake up from this period
Speaker:of time.
Speaker:And I said to myself,
Speaker:what did I do wrong?
Speaker:What am I doing?
Speaker:And I realized,
Speaker:even though I understood crafts and I understood how to make
Speaker:things and how to sell,
Speaker:I didn't understand money.
Speaker:So I went on this journey of learning everything I could
Speaker:about money.
Speaker:I mean,
Speaker:I learned in study credit scoring and taxes and real estate
Speaker:and insurance and every aspect of personal finance.
Speaker:And I found out that people really need a guide and
Speaker:really need a coach.
Speaker:And that's what really intrigued me about being a financial coach
Speaker:and what led me to starting a company zero in financial.
Speaker:So I'm thinking that everyone's freaking out right now.
Speaker:Cause they're like,
Speaker:I don't understand money.
Speaker:What just happened to Johnny?
Speaker:Is that going to happen to me?
Speaker:When you say you didn't understand money,
Speaker:were you feeling like you weren't pricing products,
Speaker:right? Or you weren't sure how to manage your money in
Speaker:a business environment?
Speaker:Or can you tell us a little bit more about that?
Speaker:Yeah, it was,
Speaker:it was much more foundational.
Speaker:I know that I didn't understand how to budget the most
Speaker:foundational tool for personal finances and business.
Speaker:Finances is a budget telling your money where to go,
Speaker:instead of wondering where it went.
Speaker:And I didn't have a plan in place on how to
Speaker:use money,
Speaker:how much I needed for the month or for the year
Speaker:kind of forecasting all those sorts of things.
Speaker:And that's exactly what I teach my clients now on a
Speaker:personal level and on a business level,
Speaker:because they're intertwined as you know,
Speaker:right. I'm so glad you said that statement Right now,
Speaker:because if you recall,
Speaker:when we were talking earlier,
Speaker:you made that comment and all of a sudden I'm like,
Speaker:wait, I need to know more about this,
Speaker:but maybe we need to be talking and sharing this with
Speaker:everybody. When you were saying,
Speaker:telling your money,
Speaker:where to go,
Speaker:because it's a much more directional,
Speaker:conscious, strategic approach than just having the money,
Speaker:throwing it where you think it needs to go,
Speaker:or because you have a bill from somebody with a product
Speaker:you're not even sure that you need for your business.
Speaker:And it just like disappearing without you even knowing For sure.
Speaker:I feel like a budget is a tool that gives you
Speaker:freedom. And really a lot of people think of,
Speaker:Oh, budget is going to restrict me.
Speaker:And really the budget allows you to tell your money where
Speaker:to go and understand the areas that you hold dear,
Speaker:as you put them in different categories and go forward.
Speaker:It's kind of like meal planning.
Speaker:I always say,
Speaker:does a meal plan make you feel like a captive when
Speaker:you go grocery shopping?
Speaker:No. It actually tells you what you want to shop in
Speaker:the store before you go there.
Speaker:And the same thing happens with the budget.
Speaker:Oh, that makes sense.
Speaker:So it's kind of like going into the grocery store already,
Speaker:knowing what you're going to make that night and you know,
Speaker:specifically what you need to get to accomplish that versus not
Speaker:having a choice you're going to go in and like figure
Speaker:it out when you're in the grocery store.
Speaker:Right. I got it.
Speaker:And explain to me,
Speaker:like, I was really captured with what you said in your
Speaker:intro about providing practical biblical principles to guide your clients.
Speaker:What does that mean?
Speaker:So the big turnaround when I started to understand money even
Speaker:more is when I went through financial courses,
Speaker:specifically financial peace university by Dave Ramsey.
Speaker:And a lot of the principles that he uses were from
Speaker:the Bible.
Speaker:He always said,
Speaker:this is just common sense for your dollars and cents that
Speaker:God and grandma will tell you.
Speaker:So it's really basic foundational principles that give you trues about
Speaker:money. For example,
Speaker:the borrowers or servant to the lender is a scripture that
Speaker:really tells you,
Speaker:okay, when I borrow money,
Speaker:that means the lender is telling me when I can pay
Speaker:what I have to do.
Speaker:But if I don't borrow,
Speaker:then I tell the money where to go.
Speaker:So when you use the Bible and a lot of these
Speaker:principles, which by the way,
Speaker:there's 2,350
Speaker:verses in the Bible about money.
Speaker:So maybe it has a little bit to say about it.
Speaker:When you use that in your life,
Speaker:it really gives you a guide and a pattern that works.
Speaker:It has worked for many,
Speaker:many, many years.
Speaker:I really liked that because I'm thinking money.
Speaker:It can be really great or it could be really evil.
Speaker:And I'm thinking of mindset here.
Speaker:And what you're just talking about right now is the purity
Speaker:of money,
Speaker:right? What God and your grandmother would tell you to do
Speaker:versus I'm thinking gambling or any type of addiction where you're
Speaker:having to find money at all costs,
Speaker:things like that.
Speaker:You could see two diverse ways just in living,
Speaker:right? And then you overlap that of course,
Speaker:with applying it to business because we need money to live.
Speaker:Let's just face it.
Speaker:Unless you're living in a remote village in the jungle,
Speaker:you have to have money to live.
Speaker:Yeah. I would really say that though,
Speaker:money is amoral.
Speaker:Meaning it's not good or evil.
Speaker:It's really a tool.
Speaker:And it is only going to do what the still a
Speaker:expression from Dave Ramsey.
Speaker:It magnifies what the person is that is using the money.
Speaker:So if the person is a crook and you give them
Speaker:money, they're going to be at colossal crook.
Speaker:But if they're a giver and they like to bless people
Speaker:and you give them money,
Speaker:they're going to become a philanthropist.
Speaker:It basically magnifies whatever you already are.
Speaker:So if you are a greedy person,
Speaker:more money is going,
Speaker:gonna make you more greedy.
Speaker:But if you are a loving and giving person,
Speaker:it's going to make you even more loving and giving,
Speaker:Oh, I like that.
Speaker:I always tell people,
Speaker:well, I haven't actually talked about it lately.
Speaker:So I can't say that,
Speaker:but I always have believed in this,
Speaker:that if you're starting a business,
Speaker:only for the financial outcome to make money,
Speaker:you're never going to succeed because there's so much more to
Speaker:business. You've got to love what the benefit is that whatever
Speaker:you're doing provides to the customer,
Speaker:to the end user,
Speaker:right? And so here at gift biz,
Speaker:unwrapped, we're all makers.
Speaker:So I call our audience,
Speaker:gifters bakers,
Speaker:crafters, and makers.
Speaker:And what I hear from,
Speaker:and you guys get biz listeners are going to reinforce this.
Speaker:Cause this is what you're saying is they make something that
Speaker:they love so much.
Speaker:They want to share it with the world.
Speaker:So I'm putting us all lumping all of us on the
Speaker:good side of the equation of what you just said.
Speaker:Awesome. But I also feel like we have mental.
Speaker:I don't know if I want to say challenges or hang
Speaker:ups or there's a stigma that we have around money.
Speaker:Sometimes that gets us hung up.
Speaker:You know what I mean?
Speaker:Yes. And I would challenge all of your listeners and your
Speaker:people to really dig deep and define what success is for
Speaker:themselves. Because people from the outside might look at you and
Speaker:say, you're not successful because they're looking at money as a
Speaker:metric or the clothes you wear,
Speaker:or how many Instagram followers and how many Pinterest pins you've
Speaker:had, or how many subscribers you have.
Speaker:And are those really going to define you as being successful
Speaker:or not?
Speaker:And the way I take people to their true definition of
Speaker:success is like you have mentioned many times on your podcast
Speaker:is to really understand your why.
Speaker:If you go deep and you ask why you're doing this,
Speaker:why are you really in this business?
Speaker:And then when you get that answer,
Speaker:ask why again.
Speaker:And that's why,
Speaker:again, to keep going deeper and deeper.
Speaker:And if you're wide,
Speaker:does it make you cry?
Speaker:You haven't gone deep enough.
Speaker:And once you hit that,
Speaker:why then you can say now,
Speaker:how do I become successful in that particular level?
Speaker:And that's your true definition of success.
Speaker:If your,
Speaker:why doesn't make you cry,
Speaker:it's not big enough.
Speaker:Yeah. It's not big enough.
Speaker:And you're not committed to it at enough.
Speaker:I guess I would say,
Speaker:you know,
Speaker:we bounced around the word passion all the time,
Speaker:right? Like you've got to be passionate.
Speaker:I love what you just said here.
Speaker:If your,
Speaker:why does that make you?
Speaker:I agree.
Speaker:And you know,
Speaker:we see evidence around us all the time,
Speaker:that money does not equate to your why or that soul
Speaker:enriching feeling that you're living the right way.
Speaker:I guess I would say,
Speaker:I know that's getting a little bit deep,
Speaker:but like you hear about people who win the lotto and
Speaker:they win millions of dollars and five years later,
Speaker:they're bankrupt again.
Speaker:Or you hear about people who you would think,
Speaker:have it all,
Speaker:maybe they're rock stars or movie stars or these big social
Speaker:media icons,
Speaker:if you will.
Speaker:And then you come to find out later that they're really
Speaker:not that happy.
Speaker:Yes. Yeah.
Speaker:That's where your relationship with money really comes into play.
Speaker:Because if you understand that money is not the measurement for
Speaker:success and money,
Speaker:isn't really directly tied to your why,
Speaker:but really goes through all these other layers of you serving
Speaker:your clients and your customers.
Speaker:Then you can really start to have the proper relationship with
Speaker:money. So what is money really then,
Speaker:I guess,
Speaker:besides the obvious that we needed to buy food and like
Speaker:he live in somewhere apartment or house or something like that,
Speaker:it's a tool you saying,
Speaker:yeah, Money is a tool.
Speaker:And obviously you can buy tools with money.
Speaker:So, and I'll take your business.
Speaker:And if you buy a ribbon maker,
Speaker:then that ribbon maker by itself is absolutely useless without you
Speaker:having a strategy and a product that you're going to create
Speaker:something with it.
Speaker:And that's the way money is,
Speaker:is it's just that tool that you're going to use to
Speaker:for an end,
Speaker:for a specific purpose to fulfill your purpose,
Speaker:which circles back to the why combat the way.
Speaker:Exactly. Yeah.
Speaker:Got it.
Speaker:So I know Johnny,
Speaker:through your blog,
Speaker:you talk about seven specific targets that everybody should be focusing
Speaker:on. I'm really curious about what that means,
Speaker:like what the targets are and the purpose for targets,
Speaker:things like that.
Speaker:Can you share that with us?
Speaker:Absolutely. Yeah.
Speaker:First of all,
Speaker:it's targets because you're zeroing in,
Speaker:when you're zeroing in on like a site on a gun
Speaker:or a bow and arrow,
Speaker:you're shooting towards your target.
Speaker:So these are the seven targets that you need to aim
Speaker:at in general for anyone's plan.
Speaker:Now there are specific things for everyone because everyone has a
Speaker:different plan.
Speaker:So there are targets that are going to be unique to
Speaker:you, but they all pretty much will fit into these seven
Speaker:targets. Well,
Speaker:I'm thinking also to get the right information,
Speaker:that's why you're saying you need to know your why,
Speaker:like you really need to know what's going to make you
Speaker:happy and what you're striving for,
Speaker:because if you don't your targets,
Speaker:aren't really going to match up.
Speaker:Correct. Perfect.
Speaker:Gotcha. Okay.
Speaker:So everyone's plan would look a little different than right?
Speaker:Oh, absolutely.
Speaker:Yeah. So the plans are always custom tailored.
Speaker:So if you were to do it on your own or
Speaker:work with a coach,
Speaker:it's just like when you go to the gym and you
Speaker:get a fitness coach,
Speaker:nobody's two plans are going to be the same as far
Speaker:as how much weight you want to lose,
Speaker:how much you can lift.
Speaker:So it's just like physical fitness.
Speaker:You're really good at analogies.
Speaker:Johnny. I'm liking this a lot.
Speaker:Okay. So let's talk about what the targets are.
Speaker:So first one Is to prayer flea plan.
Speaker:This is of course makes sense is if you don't start
Speaker:to really focus on your why and understand your purpose in
Speaker:what you're doing and why you were made to do what
Speaker:you're doing and plan accordingly to that.
Speaker:Yeah. You're not going to really have much success in the
Speaker:rest of your finances.
Speaker:So you want to plan and pray around the plan,
Speaker:that specific for your why.
Speaker:Yeah. So really this isn't a surface level,
Speaker:meaning at all,
Speaker:like how I was just talking about,
Speaker:like, if you're just going into business to make money,
Speaker:you're not setting yourself up for the best possible outcome.
Speaker:It's gotta be deeper than that.
Speaker:It's gotta be inside you.
Speaker:Yes. So that's what sets you up perfectly for the second
Speaker:two targets,
Speaker:because then you start to really talk about the money.
Speaker:Cause now you've prayed for the plan.
Speaker:Now you can talk about increasing your inflow and optimizing your
Speaker:outgo. These two targets are just like,
Speaker:it sounds inflow is all your streams of income,
Speaker:whether it be sales or affiliate income or anything you can
Speaker:imagine there is streams of income and optimize your outgo,
Speaker:which of course is spinning wisely.
Speaker:Why are you putting certain things in certain areas?
Speaker:So increasing your inflow and optimizing your outgo are absolutely pivotal
Speaker:after you have prayerfully planned.
Speaker:Got it.
Speaker:I understand this perfectly.
Speaker:Okay. And we're not even halfway there yet.
Speaker:This is really capturing your budget numbers,
Speaker:right? Like determining how much you have to start with,
Speaker:I guess,
Speaker:where money's going to come in from,
Speaker:and then what you're going to consciously be spending money on
Speaker:and that kind of circles back into inflow,
Speaker:right? Yes,
Speaker:absolutely. They circle back around each other kind of,
Speaker:When I teach and coach people to budget,
Speaker:we want to make a zero based budget.
Speaker:And I always say it rhymes because he may sense inflow
Speaker:minus outgo has to equal zero.
Speaker:So every month,
Speaker:all the inflow,
Speaker:where to go as in where to go out and that's
Speaker:going to equal zero,
Speaker:But don't you want to be making money?
Speaker:Oh, absolutely.
Speaker:Yeah. So I'll go.
Speaker:Does it have to be spent?
Speaker:I'll go.
Speaker:Can just go with a savings.
Speaker:Retained earnings is a huge part of algo because you have
Speaker:to keep money for later for future things.
Speaker:You might want an emergency fund.
Speaker:I think everyone should have an emergency fund,
Speaker:but you also want money for inventory and that sort of
Speaker:stuff. And that's all outgo.
Speaker:So when you look at a budget in flow,
Speaker:is all streams coming in,
Speaker:which could come from retained earnings and outgo is all the
Speaker:money and going out,
Speaker:which could be going to retain earnings.
Speaker:It's kind of like a profit and loss statement,
Speaker:right? Oh yeah.
Speaker:And that I don't want to get into too deep into
Speaker:accounting because No,
Speaker:and let's not because I am not a lover of numbers
Speaker:for sure.
Speaker:But that makes sense.
Speaker:So that's where your zero comes from.
Speaker:And the important point there that you were just saying is
Speaker:placing your money somewhere.
Speaker:That's what we started talking about in the very beginning.
Speaker:Right. Being very conscious.
Speaker:It's kind of like when you have an employer pull from
Speaker:your check automatically and so don't even see the money,
Speaker:it just gets saved on the side.
Speaker:Yes. Similar type thing.
Speaker:But here you're consciously controlling it and telling it where to
Speaker:go. Yes,
Speaker:absolutely. Yep.
Speaker:Love it.
Speaker:Okay. So what's step four.
Speaker:So then we are going to demolish debt.
Speaker:Okay. I don't think that people should get out of debt.
Speaker:I think they should demolish debt,
Speaker:meaning it needs to go down fast.
Speaker:Like, I don't know if you've ever seen a building being
Speaker:demolished, but it's not like one brick at a time and
Speaker:it's a slow process.
Speaker:No, we demolish.
Speaker:It goes down fast and I show people how to demolish
Speaker:it so that it's out of their life forever.
Speaker:Do you need some type of debt just to keep your
Speaker:credit history Stay tuned for Johnny's answer to this question and
Speaker:the final targets right after this short break.
Speaker:Yes. It's possible.
Speaker:Increase your sales without adding a single customer.
Speaker:How you ask by offering personalization with your products,
Speaker:wrap a cake box with a ribbon saying happy 30th birthday,
Speaker:Annie, or at a special message and date to wedding or
Speaker:party favors for an extra meaningful touch.
Speaker:Where else can you get customization with a creatively spelled name
Speaker:or find packaging?
Speaker:That includes a saying whose meaning is known to a select
Speaker:to not only our customers willing to pay for these special
Speaker:touches. They'll tell their friends and word will spread about your
Speaker:company and products.
Speaker:You can create personalized ribbons and labels in seconds,
Speaker:make just one or thousands without waiting weeks or having to
Speaker:spend money to order yards and yards print words in any
Speaker:language or font,
Speaker:add logos,
Speaker:images, even photos,
Speaker:perfect for branding or adding ingredient and flavor labels.
Speaker:To for more information,
Speaker:go to the ribbon print company.com,
Speaker:Which leads me to the next target.
Speaker:Cancel credit because I do not.
Speaker:I think that I'd love in your book,
Speaker:how you talk about growing organically and how to really just
Speaker:be able to grow at the speed of cash,
Speaker:meaning that you can start small in your business.
Speaker:And as you make money there,
Speaker:you move to the net.
Speaker:Step in,
Speaker:you have a systematic growth to your business where you are
Speaker:not leaning on creditors.
Speaker:Cause that's really adding risk and pressure that you don't even
Speaker:need. Business is already hard enough by itself.
Speaker:Why do you need more risks?
Speaker:So if you grow up the speed of cash,
Speaker:Oh my goodness.
Speaker:It's so freeing and allows you to really enjoy business so
Speaker:much more Grow at the speed of cash.
Speaker:You have a lot of quotes here.
Speaker:We may need to go back and redo your candle.
Speaker:You may need like seven candles.
Speaker:Sure. But I'm thinking that through what you're saying in terms
Speaker:of, okay,
Speaker:so you grow at the speed of cash and it's true
Speaker:because you know how,
Speaker:if you're talking with someone who wants to sell you something
Speaker:where you get into a situation where you just feel like
Speaker:they are going to push and sell you no matter what,
Speaker:because they have to like,
Speaker:it's almost life or death that they have to get the
Speaker:sale. And that feels terrible.
Speaker:And so if I'm thinking as makers,
Speaker:like if people are coming up to us at craft shows
Speaker:and we're forcing product on them,
Speaker:because we're desperate because we have to sell certain amount to
Speaker:recover our cost for the shower.
Speaker:It's like that kind of mindset versus mindset of my product
Speaker:is so awesome.
Speaker:That's going to give you this and we're going to talk
Speaker:with about candles here.
Speaker:It is going to enhance the ambience of your home.
Speaker:We've got great sense for autumn.
Speaker:You're just going to love it so much.
Speaker:And with the feeling of wanting to share that with a
Speaker:customer versus being desperate about getting the sale.
Speaker:I love that when I was in sales and I've done
Speaker:all kinds of sales in the past,
Speaker:when you have borrowed money for that product and you're selling
Speaker:it, just like you're saying,
Speaker:we used to call it commission breath in the customer,
Speaker:they could smell it like the Koser and like knows like,
Speaker:Oh, this person's like trying to pressure me into it.
Speaker:Instead of really from their heart show,
Speaker:how it's going to serve me and solve an actual problem
Speaker:that the customer has.
Speaker:And yes you are.
Speaker:Absolutely. So I'm excited.
Speaker:Cause we have two more.
Speaker:If biz listeners are you trying to figure out what the
Speaker:last two are,
Speaker:why don't you share with us?
Speaker:So strategically save.
Speaker:So you do need to strategically save and you save for
Speaker:multiple things.
Speaker:And actually there's a freebie on my website.
Speaker:That's a savings guide that shows you all the different areas
Speaker:you should save for.
Speaker:So I'm gonna go into all of the different areas,
Speaker:but you have to save for different things.
Speaker:I mean,
Speaker:part of his like products that you need,
Speaker:you need to save up for future purchases,
Speaker:but you also has emergencies.
Speaker:You also have repairs and things like that.
Speaker:I always think about when you're in your house,
Speaker:you have certain things that you buy every month,
Speaker:but you know that certain things are going to have to
Speaker:be replaced in say five years or three years.
Speaker:And you need to save up for those things too.
Speaker:Right? And there's potentially college.
Speaker:If your children are going to college and there's retirement,
Speaker:and let's not forget about that vacation that you really want
Speaker:to go.
Speaker:You know what Christmas seems to sneak up on people every
Speaker:single year.
Speaker:How does that happen every year?
Speaker:Every year.
Speaker:So we really look at that because when you systematically saved
Speaker:throughout the year,
Speaker:I'm just going to take Christmas as an example,
Speaker:if you save 50 bucks or a hundred bucks a month,
Speaker:starting in January,
Speaker:by the time you get to Christmas,
Speaker:you have a pile of cash there that you can just
Speaker:go buy whatever you want for everyone.
Speaker:Instead of wondering,
Speaker:Oh no,
Speaker:I don't have enough money.
Speaker:Where am I going to get it for this person?
Speaker:Right. And then hopefully staying within your budget so that you're
Speaker:not paying off Christmas into March of the following year.
Speaker:Dictations are the worst of that.
Speaker:I know so many people that came back from Disney world
Speaker:and they're still paying for it like six months later.
Speaker:Yeah. Well Mickey has that effect on you.
Speaker:Okay. Strategically save.
Speaker:I love that.
Speaker:You know,
Speaker:it's devastating to hear how many people live paycheck to paycheck,
Speaker:78% of Americans right now I get with what we're going
Speaker:through. I'm not wanting anybody to feel bad who's in that
Speaker:situation. But thinking with an eye towards doing something different is
Speaker:where we're trying to go with us.
Speaker:Yes. And the number really hasn't changed much over the last
Speaker:few years.
Speaker:It's been in the seventies as far as the households.
Speaker:And it's definitely not something to feel bad about,
Speaker:but it's something be aware and say,
Speaker:okay, maybe I need to learn how to handle finances and
Speaker:I need to get help.
Speaker:So it's a great awakening For sure.
Speaker:And just the feeling of not being in debt and having
Speaker:a little bit of a kitty that you can dip into
Speaker:when you need to just there's enough pressure in this world
Speaker:and enough stress and enough tension that if you can control
Speaker:something like that,
Speaker:where at least,
Speaker:you know,
Speaker:you have some type of a buffer,
Speaker:it just makes things so much easier.
Speaker:Well, thank you.
Speaker:If you had no debt and you had savings sitting on
Speaker:the side and an emergency happens that emergency just turned into
Speaker:a, just an inconvenience.
Speaker:I like that,
Speaker:but it's hard to get there for sure.
Speaker:You've got to intentionally plan to have that be your outcome.
Speaker:Well, I hope I make it easier for my clients to
Speaker:get there.
Speaker:Go. That's why we all need you and bringing it home
Speaker:here. What's number seven.
Speaker:So obviously after you've gotten to this point and you're like,
Speaker:Oh, I have no debt.
Speaker:And I know I'm in a plan.
Speaker:That's aligned to my purpose.
Speaker:And I have money set aside and I don't have the
Speaker:stress that I used to have.
Speaker:I mean,
Speaker:what more joyful thing can you possibly do then to generously
Speaker:give? And that last target of generosity is the most fun
Speaker:you can have with money,
Speaker:by the way.
Speaker:I mean spending and all that,
Speaker:it seems like it's fun,
Speaker:but I'll tell you what,
Speaker:when you give there is nothing like it.
Speaker:I think I read somewhere that something chemically happens in your
Speaker:body when you give,
Speaker:like you're not just helping whoever your contributing to or whatever,
Speaker:but there's something that is fueled within you to just a
Speaker:sense of satisfaction.
Speaker:Or I'm not sure if it's chemical or what it is
Speaker:Just by the person in the person in line behind you
Speaker:at Starbucks,
Speaker:just pay for their drink and watch what happens.
Speaker:I mean,
Speaker:this is like five bucks or whatever,
Speaker:and your heart starts racing.
Speaker:It's crazy.
Speaker:What happens when you're generous even a little bit.
Speaker:And by the way,
Speaker:generosity does it always have to be with money.
Speaker:I actually have a blog post as how to give big,
Speaker:without spinning a penny.
Speaker:And it talks about all the ways you can give and
Speaker:it doesn't even have to do with money.
Speaker:Oh, that's interesting.
Speaker:Can you pull up a couple of those by way of
Speaker:example for us here?
Speaker:Yeah. Well obviously giving of your talent,
Speaker:you have a hugely talented audience listening.
Speaker:They have so many skills.
Speaker:And what if you were to teach some young teenager or
Speaker:somebody who's home and doesn't have a way to make money
Speaker:and you give your talent to that person and show them
Speaker:how to do something with a craft that could change their
Speaker:life. I mean,
Speaker:it's gonna be a life changing thing.
Speaker:It's kind of like teaching someone how to fish instead of
Speaker:giving them a fish.
Speaker:Yeah. I mean,
Speaker:when you use your talents to bless other people,
Speaker:that's a huge way to give.
Speaker:I'm glad we talked about this because I would say that
Speaker:my audience here are huge givers,
Speaker:but I'm thinking when I'm looking at your seven,
Speaker:there's an order to this,
Speaker:right? So one builds on top of another.
Speaker:I think we start giving at the two or the three,
Speaker:like a lot of people under price,
Speaker:what their product's worth.
Speaker:A lot of people don't account for the time that it
Speaker:took them to make a product.
Speaker:They just zero that out.
Speaker:So that's not included in the price at all.
Speaker:And so that's one place I would suggest where my audience
Speaker:gets tripped up.
Speaker:We're so giving that,
Speaker:then I think it cuts us off at the knees.
Speaker:And then doesn't allow us to give into the great level
Speaker:that we possibly could.
Speaker:If you give too early,
Speaker:what do you think about that?
Speaker:When I started coaching,
Speaker:I used to think that I had to give away my
Speaker:service and I saw certain people who were like,
Speaker:Oh, they're in desperate straits.
Speaker:And they said,
Speaker:Oh, you know,
Speaker:I can't afford to pay for coaching.
Speaker:So I would give it to them to this day.
Speaker:I cannot believe,
Speaker:but I'm talking dozens of people that I used to give
Speaker:my service away to.
Speaker:None of them have made any substantial changes in their life.
Speaker:Whereas every single person that I charge has made changes in
Speaker:their life is not always a good thing to give.
Speaker:First of all,
Speaker:for the customer I'm talking about for them thinking of them,
Speaker:but then for yourself,
Speaker:just like you said,
Speaker:you have to increase the inflow,
Speaker:optimize outgo plan,
Speaker:do all of these things before the generously giving part,
Speaker:because you have to keep going.
Speaker:You have to be sustainable and your business needs you before
Speaker:you can give to someone else.
Speaker:Yeah. And then you'll be able to continue giving Pretty much.
Speaker:So. Yeah.
Speaker:It's kind of like the airplane analogy that you need to
Speaker:put on your own mask before you can put the mask
Speaker:on someone else.
Speaker:Right? Exactly.
Speaker:So what do you think of some of the baggage,
Speaker:maybe I'll say that we grew up with that we're maybe
Speaker:taking into our thinking with money today.
Speaker:Yeah. I noticed that a lot of people grew up in
Speaker:different ways.
Speaker:Some people money was taboo.
Speaker:When you never talked about money in the household,
Speaker:like your parents was like sex and money are two topics
Speaker:you just don't talk about.
Speaker:And then you just,
Speaker:so you kind of went along thinking that this was something
Speaker:that you can ask for help about and you kind of
Speaker:just wander and make a lot of mistakes on the road.
Speaker:And because of that,
Speaker:you have a lot of stumbling blocks when it comes to
Speaker:discussing and really digging deep when it comes to this topic.
Speaker:And when we're able to start talking through that and getting
Speaker:out of that cycle,
Speaker:that's when I really find people have a lot of success.
Speaker:Then there's others though that grew up where money was a
Speaker:hostile subject at home.
Speaker:And this is probably the hardest one to have to deal
Speaker:with. But when you saw your parents have money fights,
Speaker:for example,
Speaker:it really has an effect for you and going forward in
Speaker:your relationships,
Speaker:not just with money,
Speaker:but with other people,
Speaker:that's a lot of things that we have to work through.
Speaker:And that's why coaching is so important.
Speaker:Yeah. Because I'm thinking with both of those,
Speaker:the effect would be not to share what's going on,
Speaker:which can lead to problems that get compounded and then are
Speaker:hidden. Then they finally have to come to the surface and
Speaker:then it looks very disingenuous because you are hiding something from
Speaker:your spouse.
Speaker:For example,
Speaker:I'm thinking that's one way it could happen.
Speaker:And then also just the idea of not reaching out for
Speaker:help. Like if things just quite aren't going,
Speaker:right. Listen,
Speaker:especially as makers with us,
Speaker:like, you can't know everything,
Speaker:you can't know business,
Speaker:you can't know the expertise and skill of your craft and
Speaker:money and marketing and like everything.
Speaker:So it's okay to rally and bring in some troops to
Speaker:help you out.
Speaker:Absolutely. It's always just great to ask for help in every
Speaker:area of life.
Speaker:So what do you think for someone who's listening?
Speaker:And they've never really thought about this before.
Speaker:I mean,
Speaker:we've really been kind of black and white about money.
Speaker:We make products.
Speaker:We want to make money so that we can build our
Speaker:business, have some money in our pocket and continue making the
Speaker:product so we can continue to sell.
Speaker:But we've never been as strategic as you're laying things out
Speaker:here. Where does someone start?
Speaker:You must start by just admitting to yourself that you need
Speaker:to learn more.
Speaker:I know people who say,
Speaker:Oh yeah,
Speaker:I can handle money.
Speaker:And they are unwilling to grow.
Speaker:You never know everything as you know,
Speaker:And it's okay not to know everything.
Speaker:Exactly. If you say,
Speaker:you know what,
Speaker:I don't know,
Speaker:everything. I can always learn more.
Speaker:So start tapping into resources in which you can start to
Speaker:learn more.
Speaker:And there's so many resources.
Speaker:Yeah. Well,
Speaker:you were mentioning earlier your savings guide.
Speaker:Yeah. I have a lot of freebies that you can get
Speaker:from my Instagram.
Speaker:You can download guides and little helpful post in that sort
Speaker:of thing,
Speaker:which will just be able to maybe move you closer to
Speaker:where you want to be in certain areas and these seven
Speaker:targets. Okay.
Speaker:And your blog and give his listeners.
Speaker:We'll have all the links then over on the show notes
Speaker:page, as you know,
Speaker:from every show.
Speaker:So you'll be able to go and see Johnny,
Speaker:but also Johnny,
Speaker:if there was one place,
Speaker:someone who's out walking right now and just wants to know
Speaker:one place where they could go find you,
Speaker:where would you suggest they go Instagram zero in financial,
Speaker:Zero in financial.
Speaker:Yep. Okay.
Speaker:Fabulous. And as you're moving forward,
Speaker:Johnny, what are you seeing for zero in financial?
Speaker:What's your future look like?
Speaker:My ultimate goal is just to have a thriving community membership
Speaker:site. I was going to go with Facebook sort of group,
Speaker:but I see the power of membership sites and being able
Speaker:to go in and have group coaching sessions,
Speaker:be able to share with each other.
Speaker:Everyone can learn from each other.
Speaker:I learned something every minute of the day.
Speaker:So I love the community aspects and we need to start
Speaker:talking about money just as a community,
Speaker:more as a business community,
Speaker:as different communities in our lives.
Speaker:We need to talk about it.
Speaker:And that's what I want to create ultimately.
Speaker:And it's not there yet,
Speaker:but I'm working on it.
Speaker:Well, that's why I asked you what's coming next.
Speaker:Right? Cause we're all a work in progress.
Speaker:We're all moving towards something different,
Speaker:bigger, greater something that continues to fulfill us,
Speaker:you know,
Speaker:all that kind of thing.
Speaker:So you were mentioning to earlier there was a program that
Speaker:you would recommend for everybody.
Speaker:Yeah. I mentioned Dave Ramsey's financial peace university and this is
Speaker:the program me and my wife went through.
Speaker:We've not do it several times because it is life changing
Speaker:is very simple.
Speaker:It's not scary.
Speaker:It's actually really funny and he makes finances fun and I
Speaker:highly recommend it.
Speaker:I'm actually coordinating a class.
Speaker:It's a volunteer thing.
Speaker:I don't make any money from this,
Speaker:but I coordinate some FPU financial peace university classes.
Speaker:And one starts actually,
Speaker:as of this recording,
Speaker:it is probably in week two,
Speaker:but there are many classes that are going on continuously throughout
Speaker:the year.
Speaker:And I always do a class at least two or three
Speaker:times a year.
Speaker:And you can find out when I'm coordinating a class right
Speaker:on my website@zeroandfinancial.com.
Speaker:Perfect. Well thank you so much.
Speaker:This has been so interesting.
Speaker:And I think it's given all of us a little bit
Speaker:of a different way to look at money and not be
Speaker:afraid of it.
Speaker:And I think the biggest thing is control your money,
Speaker:tell your money where it should go and then also reach
Speaker:out and ask for help.
Speaker:Those are my big takeaways here.
Speaker:Is there anything else you would add?
Speaker:Any words of encouragement to my listeners?
Speaker:Yeah. One more thing that I really highly,
Speaker:highly recommend,
Speaker:and that is to be continually reading.
Speaker:I want to challenge your audience even to put reading on
Speaker:your calendar on your,
Speaker:to do list and make a point to continue reading books,
Speaker:because there are so many great books to help you along
Speaker:in every area of life.
Speaker:I wouldn't recommend born to win,
Speaker:which is a book that really helps you as a person,
Speaker:as in sales and really to have the courage and the
Speaker:confidence in yourself when it comes to being in business for
Speaker:yourself and that's born to win and it's by Zig Ziglar,
Speaker:The Zig man.
Speaker:Love it.
Speaker:Okay. Dice.
Speaker:This has been super thank you so much for your time
Speaker:today. Sharing your seven steps and we'll go over them.
Speaker:We'll look at your blog.
Speaker:We'll see your Instagram and check out your class.
Speaker:Thanks again.
Speaker:I really appreciate it,
Speaker:Johnny. Thank you so much.
Speaker:Sue, Does your Y make you cry,
Speaker:grow at the speed of cash money magnifies what you really
Speaker:are so many good points to ponder here.
Speaker:I can only speak for myself to say that once I
Speaker:got control over my money,
Speaker:the stress level went way down and I'm not talking about
Speaker:having lots of money.
Speaker:I'm just talking about using the money that I had in
Speaker:the best way to reach my goals.
Speaker:You've heard me say this before I started all three of
Speaker:my businesses without a loan of any kind I used what
Speaker:I could afford to invest to get started.
Speaker:And then I built from there.
Speaker:That's what I teach everyone inside my programs too.
Speaker:You don't need thousands of dollars to start that business of
Speaker:yours. And guess what?
Speaker:With Facebook shops,
Speaker:you don't need any money at all.
Speaker:Just the desire to share your product with the world.
Speaker:The link again,
Speaker:to learn how to set up and sell on this platform
