Speaker:Hi there.
Speaker:It's Sue,
Speaker:How are you doing today?
Speaker:Hope all is well in your neck of the woods.
Speaker:I'm in town this week,
Speaker:but headed off to Tampa next week.
Speaker:Not sure yet if timing works out to do a meetup,
Speaker:but if you're interested,
Speaker:direct message me and I'll include you in the plans as
Speaker:they develop.
Speaker:We'd either meet right in Tampa or in San Antonio.
Speaker:Yes, there is such a place in Florida.
Speaker:It's about 30 miles Southwest of Tampa.
Speaker:So any interest let me know to start off with today,
Speaker:I have a big announcement,
Speaker:a podcast switch of sorts.
Speaker:I'm planning on doing a test to switch the air dates
Speaker:of the gift biz unwrapped podcast.
Speaker:To see if there's a more convenient schedule based on your
Speaker:lifestyle. Given that about 70% of small handmade product businesses are
Speaker:a part-time venture.
Speaker:I know that many of you have nine to five jobs
Speaker:or another part-time job.
Speaker:That means Monday mornings may not be the best day to
Speaker:drop this show.
Speaker:I just don't know.
Speaker:I'm thinking you may have more time on the weekends to
Speaker:listen and possibly even implement the new learnings versus at the
Speaker:start of a week.
Speaker:Some of you have told me as much,
Speaker:so let's run a test,
Speaker:just like I always suggest you do in your business beginning
Speaker:with next week's podcast episode,
Speaker:I'm going to conduct this four week test instead of airing
Speaker:the shows on Monday and Thursday,
Speaker:I will be publishing the main show on Saturday with tips
Speaker:and talk on the following Wednesday.
Speaker:They're of course,
Speaker:available to you anytime after that initial air date,
Speaker:just as always,
Speaker:but let's see what happens.
Speaker:Any feedback you have on this one way or another is
Speaker:of course always welcome.
Speaker:It's also kind of fun considering the topic for the first
Speaker:Saturday. Show more on that and a huge hint at the
Speaker:end of the show here today for now,
Speaker:let's move on to the show today.
Speaker:We're talking to the boss lady in sweatpants all about Instagram
Speaker:and we're taking it from the top.
Speaker:Gosh, this social media platform has become a powerhouse and to
Speaker:some it's getting really complicated.
Speaker:I mean,
Speaker:there's feed,
Speaker:posting highlights stories.
Speaker:I GTV and reels.
Speaker:What, how do you figure all this out?
Speaker:Especially if you're new to the platform.
Speaker:So I want you to relax,
Speaker:take a deep breath and we'll break it down into manageable
Speaker:pieces by going back to the basics of setup and strategy.
Speaker:Because if you don't have those two things,
Speaker:right, nothing else is going to bring you the results that
Speaker:you want with that.
Speaker:Let's jump right into the show today.
Speaker:I have joining us Alison Scholz,
Speaker:and you're going to love the name of her company.
Speaker:Are you ready?
Speaker:Boss lady in sweat pants.
Speaker:So perfect.
Speaker:Right? Alison helps mompreneurs build their Instagram presence through coaching creative
Speaker:copy and content on her podcast called social media for mompreneurs.
Speaker:She guides busy moms on how to build their brand online
Speaker:in just minutes a day.
Speaker:Even when those minutes are super hard to come by.
Speaker:Alison believes social media should be fun and easy,
Speaker:not daunting with her sassy and fun personality mixed with her
Speaker:creativity and love for sweat pants and coffee.
Speaker:She's able to deliver simple and creative tools that help mompreneurs
Speaker:boost their business with confidence and ease.
Speaker:Alison, we need you so much welcome to the gift biz
Speaker:on repped podcast.
Speaker:Hi Sue.
Speaker:Thanks for having me.
Speaker:I'm excited to be here Too.
Speaker:And just the words you choose to use,
Speaker:bring a certain vibe that makes me feel so good already
Speaker:about what we're going to talk about.
Speaker:So I can't wait to dive in,
Speaker:but before we do,
Speaker:I'm going to ask you my traditional question here.
Speaker:And that is for all our listeners and myself,
Speaker:because we're all creatives to get to know you in a
Speaker:little bit of a creative different way,
Speaker:and that is through a motivational candle.
Speaker:So if you were to envision a candle that really resonates
Speaker:everything about you,
Speaker:Alison, what would it look like by color and quote?
Speaker:Well, the color would definitely be green,
Speaker:which might be surprising because it's not my brand colors at
Speaker:all. And my quote,
Speaker:I think a lot of people are going to go,
Speaker:what on earth is this?
Speaker:But once you get to know me,
Speaker:you're going to understand this quote.
Speaker:And my quote would be,
Speaker:don't be like low-key and I can definitely expand on that
Speaker:if you'd like,
Speaker:but you totally have to please do.
Speaker:Yeah. So you know that I'm an Instagram coach and I
Speaker:know so many women,
Speaker:especially entrepreneurs and product based businesses,
Speaker:they spin their wheels on Instagram,
Speaker:how to grow their business and their brand.
Speaker:So a lot of people,
Speaker:when they work with me,
Speaker:they will learn that I am a huge Marvel fan,
Speaker:more like a Marvel and my favorite character.
Speaker:My favorite villain character is low-key hands down my all time
Speaker:favorite. So I always say,
Speaker:you can love Loki in the movies cause he's a trickster.
Speaker:He manipulates,
Speaker:he copies,
Speaker:but you can't be like,
Speaker:low-key on Instagram.
Speaker:If you want to grow your brand,
Speaker:you have to be your authentic self.
Speaker:So don't try to improvise.
Speaker:Don't create something that you want your image to be.
Speaker:Don't try to anticipate that you'll attract more followers by being
Speaker:a certain way,
Speaker:just get on and be who you are.
Speaker:Is that what you mean?
Speaker:Yes, absolutely.
Speaker:Because Loki is known to mimic other people and transform,
Speaker:and we can't do that on Instagram.
Speaker:If we really,
Speaker:really want to make those connections and grow our business Well,
Speaker:and I think a lot of people do,
Speaker:they get freaked out about social media overall,
Speaker:because it's going out to who knows who you know,
Speaker:is going to see it.
Speaker:And so you try to say,
Speaker:okay, how do I position myself in the best light to
Speaker:the people that I want to attract?
Speaker:And then what you're saying is the more disingenuous you become,
Speaker:you're actually going against what you're trying to create in the
Speaker:first place,
Speaker:which is a community.
Speaker:Yeah, absolutely.
Speaker:And here's the things too.
Speaker:We all start off that way when we're on a new
Speaker:social media platform.
Speaker:So when we take Instagram,
Speaker:for instance,
Speaker:what happens is we are watching other people that are very
Speaker:similar to our niche or what we do in the world.
Speaker:So we will fall into that trap of consuming so much
Speaker:content, right?
Speaker:And we look at these people and go,
Speaker:oh, they're successful.
Speaker:So maybe that's exactly how I need to show up.
Speaker:And at the end of the day,
Speaker:it's really not going to work for you.
Speaker:You really need to get crystal clear on why you're on
Speaker:Instagram or any social media platform in the first place,
Speaker:and really just get in tune with your own brand and
Speaker:the way you want to show up in your own authenticity,
Speaker:it'll show up better online on your social media platforms when
Speaker:you do it that way.
Speaker:That's interesting.
Speaker:And we're definitely going to dive more into that.
Speaker:I have to tell you Alison,
Speaker:that as I was thinking of,
Speaker:well, what topics do I want to cover?
Speaker:What questions do I want to ask based on where your
Speaker:expertise is?
Speaker:And all I just was thinking to myself,
Speaker:if we had done this interview last week,
Speaker:you would probably be saying something different than you're even going
Speaker:to say this week because things keep changing so fast.
Speaker:Yes. Share With me first,
Speaker:how you decided that Instagram well,
Speaker:social media overall,
Speaker:but specifically Instagram,
Speaker:how that was going to be your platform,
Speaker:the focus.
Speaker:So in the beginning years ago,
Speaker:I always knew that I wanted to build a business.
Speaker:I never liked the idea of working a nine to five.
Speaker:I knew that kids were going to be in my life
Speaker:and they are,
Speaker:and I really wanted to be that fully present mom.
Speaker:And so I wanted to a business.
Speaker:And in the beginning I actually started with a product based
Speaker:business where I was actually selling personalized Disney autograph books through
Speaker:Etsy. That is how I started my journey.
Speaker:And so I wanted to get the word out and I
Speaker:started using Instagram.
Speaker:And as I kind of went through that,
Speaker:I was discovering that just blasting pictures of my products on
Speaker:Instagram was not working.
Speaker:So as the years unfolded,
Speaker:I actually didn't want to do the autograph books anymore.
Speaker:I really wanted to get into blogging.
Speaker:And that is how boss,
Speaker:lady and sweat pants came about,
Speaker:where I wanted to have a blog.
Speaker:And I really thought in the beginning it was going to
Speaker:be a mom blog of raising kids,
Speaker:how to build a business,
Speaker:but it really just fell into the social media space because
Speaker:I was on social media,
Speaker:trying to figure it out for myself,
Speaker:falling into Instagram,
Speaker:just learning everything I could about Instagram,
Speaker:following the gurus,
Speaker:taking all the classes.
Speaker:And that is just really how I honed in to the
Speaker:Instagram's space and really figuring out how I could use this
Speaker:tool, this marketing tool to build my brand and how I
Speaker:can stand out.
Speaker:Even though there are so many other people that do the
Speaker:same thing I do.
Speaker:I knew that there was space for me and I allowed
Speaker:myself to take the time and to really hone in into
Speaker:my brand and what I wanted to stand for and then
Speaker:figure out how I'm going to put it out there on
Speaker:Instagram. I love it.
Speaker:And I love that explanation as well because with people who
Speaker:are listening here,
Speaker:you guys are going to agree with me that there are
Speaker:other people who make pampering products like sugar scrubs or lotions
Speaker:or jewelry.
Speaker:And so just like you're saying with social media,
Speaker:there are other people doing Instagram,
Speaker:but they're not doing it the way you do it.
Speaker:I think that's kind of circles back to this whole idea
Speaker:of individuality on the social media platforms too,
Speaker:because there are other people who are creating the products that
Speaker:we all make.
Speaker:And the only way we can be different and stand out
Speaker:is to show our personality.
Speaker:Yes, our products might have some unique qualities too,
Speaker:but that personality overlay is the only thing that people absolutely
Speaker:positively can't mimic.
Speaker:Absolutely. And We've talked about this before here.
Speaker:Alison is,
Speaker:and we've talked video and all of that,
Speaker:and I think people understand it,
Speaker:but actually getting to the point where they're applying,
Speaker:it seems to be the challenge.
Speaker:And I also know that a lot of people spend so
Speaker:much time and just feel like they aren't getting anywhere with
Speaker:the platform.
Speaker:So let's talk through some of this if we can.
Speaker:And I'm not sure if we want to start right in
Speaker:the beginning about Instagram or where we should start,
Speaker:but I'd really like to tackle this question and I'm not
Speaker:talking about having something go viral or like any of that
Speaker:stuff. I'm just talking about steadily,
Speaker:building an audience with the right people coming in.
Speaker:Maybe you can give us some tips or something about how
Speaker:to do that,
Speaker:but where do you think we should start with this conversation?
Speaker:I get the same question all the time.
Speaker:Sue, and it's hard to just give one answer for so
Speaker:many different people.
Speaker:I would ask your audience,
Speaker:why are you on Instagram in the first place?
Speaker:So first we need to identify your Instagram objective.
Speaker:Maybe your Instagram objective is to build brand awareness or maybe
Speaker:it's to build community.
Speaker:Maybe you want to drive traffic to your website.
Speaker:Maybe it's an Etsy store or an Amazon store,
Speaker:or maybe you want to grow your email list.
Speaker:I want to ask you a question.
Speaker:I think the obvious first answer for everybody is going to
Speaker:be well,
Speaker:it's a way for me to get more sales.
Speaker:And I think this may be where the whole problem starts
Speaker:because you're jumping from not knowing somebody to thinking one post
Speaker:would convert to a sale.
Speaker:And what you were just saying here,
Speaker:in terms of your demonstration of different goals that we can
Speaker:have is it's not always necessarily selling it's a step towards
Speaker:the sale.
Speaker:Would you agree?
Speaker:Yeah. So let me put it this way.
Speaker:Instagram is not a sales platform.
Speaker:Instagram is a connection platform.
Speaker:So your Etsy store,
Speaker:your Amazon store,
Speaker:that is your sales.
Speaker:We have to make a shift in our mind.
Speaker:We have to make a mindset shift that we cannot approach
Speaker:Instagram in a way to sell something.
Speaker:We have to approach Instagram in a way to help and
Speaker:serve people.
Speaker:When we make that mindset shift,
Speaker:that is when you will grow your brand,
Speaker:your presence on Instagram,
Speaker:it's not about selling.
Speaker:Selling comes later.
Speaker:Selling comes naturally.
Speaker:It's all about connections.
Speaker:First. It's all about serving and helping.
Speaker:Even though We can sell from certain posts,
Speaker:you can tag a post and Sal,
Speaker:are you saying that should not ever be your primary purpose
Speaker:overall for your whole account?
Speaker:It might be for a particular post,
Speaker:but overall for the account,
Speaker:it should not be right.
Speaker:Yes. So then let me see if I can remember the
Speaker:types of strategies and reasons why you would be on Instagram
Speaker:that you had mentioned.
Speaker:So you may want to grow your list.
Speaker:You might want to get people to know you,
Speaker:you know,
Speaker:discovery. I've always thought of Instagram as a place for discovery
Speaker:for people and then deepening a relationship,
Speaker:right? And then getting over to those sales platforms at some
Speaker:point, would you pick only one of these or a couple
Speaker:of these?
Speaker:Because I feel like all of these are important for a
Speaker:business. They Are all important.
Speaker:But what happens is when we try to do all of
Speaker:those at one time,
Speaker:and we are just blasting different types of posts,
Speaker:you actually end up confusing your audience.
Speaker:That's what happens.
Speaker:So I always recommend that you focus on a specific objective
Speaker:or goal for the next 60 to 90 days.
Speaker:That way your content can be very concrete and you're building
Speaker:the know like,
Speaker:and trust,
Speaker:All right,
Speaker:let's do this.
Speaker:Can I present to you a specific type of person and
Speaker:we'll walk through then what they should do?
Speaker:How does that sound?
Speaker:Yes. So although this might not apply to everybody who's listening.
Speaker:I think some of the concepts you'll be able to make
Speaker:extensions with,
Speaker:but let's go with someone.
Speaker:Alison, who has an Instagram account,
Speaker:they have a hundred followers.
Speaker:Okay. So I mean a nice amount,
Speaker:but it's,
Speaker:I don't know,
Speaker:relatively small,
Speaker:I guess when you look at all these people with thousands
Speaker:and then that whole target of 10,000
Speaker:followers and all of that.
Speaker:So they have a hundred followers.
Speaker:They got on Instagram because they knew they should.
Speaker:Instagram is what everyone's talking about.
Speaker:And since it's connected with Facebook,
Speaker:there's decided that they were going to start their Instagram account.
Speaker:Okay. And they've posted randomly,
Speaker:they've posted,
Speaker:I'm going to just be honest.
Speaker:They've probably posted their product and product and product and product.
Speaker:Cause that's all we in the beginning know or think we
Speaker:should be doing and they're not getting any traction,
Speaker:their Instagram account really hasn't grown.
Speaker:They got a hundred people kind of in the beginning because
Speaker:friends, family,
Speaker:extension of friends,
Speaker:groups, they're in that kind of thing.
Speaker:But now it's been stagnant and they're just frustrated.
Speaker:So let's work with that person.
Speaker:Cause I think I know there are a lot of people
Speaker:who are listening,
Speaker:who are in that situation,
Speaker:what do we do?
Speaker:We sell a product.
Speaker:What are we going to sell?
Speaker:We sell pottery.
Speaker:Let's go with pottery.
Speaker:So this is my situation.
Speaker:I don't know what to do.
Speaker:So the first thing I guess I should be doing is
Speaker:figuring out what my Instagram objective is,
Speaker:but I want to sell pottery.
Speaker:So what do I do?
Speaker:Okay. So I'm just going to assume it's a female.
Speaker:I'm gonna call her Sally.
Speaker:Oh good.
Speaker:Sally. Yeah.
Speaker:Sally sells Patrie.
Speaker:Sally sells pottery.
Speaker:The first thing that Sally needs to do once she's established
Speaker:her Instagram objective.
Speaker:So at this point,
Speaker:I think she would want to build brand awareness.
Speaker:She only has a hundred followers.
Speaker:You can only sell so much pottery to one person,
Speaker:I would assume.
Speaker:So at this point,
Speaker:you really want to build some brand awareness so you can
Speaker:expand your audience.
Speaker:So once Sally focuses on brand awareness,
Speaker:now she needs to move to who is her ideal client?
Speaker:Who does she want to serve and help?
Speaker:Who does she want to expose the pottery world to most
Speaker:likely it would probably be maybe females,
Speaker:35 and over I'm assuming here.
Speaker:So the biggest mistake that I see on Instagram is their
Speaker:bios. Because a lot of us being entrepreneurs,
Speaker:we are multi-passionate creative beans.
Speaker:So we think that our Instagram bio needs to be all
Speaker:about what we do,
Speaker:what we sell and all the different things that we do.
Speaker:The problem is when we make our Instagram bio about us,
Speaker:it becomes vanity metrics.
Speaker:And to be honest,
Speaker:when someone goes to look at your bio,
Speaker:they really don't care about everything that you do.
Speaker:They don't care that you're a coffee lover.
Speaker:They don't care that you own a dog.
Speaker:They want to know what's in it for them.
Speaker:So we need to make our Instagram bio about our I
Speaker:deal audience.
Speaker:And your Instagram bio has three important parts.
Speaker:You need to state who you serve,
Speaker:what is their main problem?
Speaker:And what is your solution?
Speaker:So Sally in her bio would have some sort of,
Speaker:I help statement.
Speaker:Cause remember we're helping and serving our audience.
Speaker:We're not selling to them.
Speaker:We want to help them.
Speaker:So maybe Sally's statement might be,
Speaker:and I'm just really throwing this out in the wind.
Speaker:Like I help women jazz up their homes.
Speaker:You know,
Speaker:what would be in the past?
Speaker:Is it just Add some spice to an environment?
Speaker:Yeah. Like It'd be something like that.
Speaker:Like I help women spice up their homes or jazz up
Speaker:their homes or something through custom pottery and whatever else Sally
Speaker:might do.
Speaker:So maybe it's custom pottery or different sized pottery.
Speaker:So I would have to work specifically with that person to
Speaker:really look at their store,
Speaker:to see what they are.
Speaker:But that is kind of the main formula to your Instagram
Speaker:bio is to have that sentence.
Speaker:If you were to look at mine,
Speaker:I have a sentence in there and it always starts with
Speaker:I help because I want to help my audience.
Speaker:So a person reading that go,
Speaker:Ooh, custom pottery,
Speaker:oh, I need to jazz up my home.
Speaker:I'd love pottery.
Speaker:That is how you're going to attract the right people to
Speaker:you as you need to audit your bio first,
Speaker:because when they go to your account,
Speaker:that is the first thing they see.
Speaker:They're going to read that bio.
Speaker:So you need to have those three parts.
Speaker:Who is your audience?
Speaker:Who are you helping?
Speaker:What is their main pain point or problem?
Speaker:Granted, they might have several problems,
Speaker:but what is the main overarching problem?
Speaker:And then what is your main solution,
Speaker:your overarching solution.
Speaker:So it's,
Speaker:I help who's your audience.
Speaker:Maybe it's to overcome gain,
Speaker:achieve something.
Speaker:And then how do you do it?
Speaker:It's through or by your solution.
Speaker:Yeah. Your product is your solution.
Speaker:All right.
Speaker:So I want to summarize where we are up to this
Speaker:point. And if you've not thought of your Instagram account like
Speaker:this before,
Speaker:or even if you're further,
Speaker:along than the a hundred followers,
Speaker:like we talked about,
Speaker:it's always nice to recheck everything.
Speaker:So what's your purpose for being on Instagram?
Speaker:Let's say to stick with Sally,
Speaker:hers is brand awareness.
Speaker:Now what does brand awareness mean?
Speaker:So that will be just getting the name of your company
Speaker:out there and what you stand for,
Speaker:like the vibe of your business and all of that exposure
Speaker:because people can't buy from you unless they know you.
Speaker:And then your ideal client,
Speaker:I would say Alison,
Speaker:that a lot of people who are starting off have to
Speaker:guess who their ideal client is,
Speaker:they start like Sally's making her pottery.
Speaker:And she knows in the beginning who she's planning on making
Speaker:it for.
Speaker:But then when she actually start going out to craft shows
Speaker:and selling or starting to get customers online and selling that
Speaker:might change from her initial idea of who they were going
Speaker:to be over time.
Speaker:So once you are in business for a longer period of
Speaker:time, you get more savvy about who the people are that
Speaker:you're attracting.
Speaker:So when we then go and talk about the bio and
Speaker:this is why I wanted to interrupt this flow,
Speaker:Alison for just a second,
Speaker:is that if you haven't looked at your bio for a
Speaker:long time or put your bio in the structure that Alison's
Speaker:talking about,
Speaker:rethink, if your bio still aligns with the types of customers
Speaker:that you're attracting today,
Speaker:it might be time for an update.
Speaker:So I just wanted to put that in there.
Speaker:So we've gotten all this figured out and we're still sitting
Speaker:here trying to help Sally,
Speaker:who understands now what should do.
Speaker:And by the way,
Speaker:these are business accounts,
Speaker:not personal accounts,
Speaker:right? Alison,
Speaker:so it's an Instagram account for business.
Speaker:And on Instagram,
Speaker:you can create as many accounts as you want.
Speaker:You just have to have different email addresses.
Speaker:And I wouldn't create a million because you're not going to
Speaker:keep up with them,
Speaker:but maybe at the most one personal and one business,
Speaker:maybe even if you have a personal Yeah,
Speaker:and that's a big,
Speaker:maybe I have one account.
Speaker:I am the brand.
Speaker:Even though you are a product based business,
Speaker:you are the brand.
Speaker:And the whole point on Instagram is to make the connection.
Speaker:So I wouldn't have a separate personal and business account.
Speaker:I would have have one Instagram account.
Speaker:It's so much easier to manage.
Speaker:So given that though,
Speaker:what rules would you have about your account?
Speaker:If you only have one and you really are using it
Speaker:for business,
Speaker:do you have any rules about what you would post in
Speaker:that post,
Speaker:in that account?
Speaker:Well, here's the good thing is there are no rules because
Speaker:it's really what you're comfortable with.
Speaker:But what I like to do is guide my clients to
Speaker:creating what I call content categories.
Speaker:And these are simply your post types,
Speaker:because a lot of times we can fall into the trap
Speaker:of just posting about our products all the time.
Speaker:And when someone looks at what you're posting all the time,
Speaker:and if it's constant pictures of your products,
Speaker:it just comes across as spammy.
Speaker:I hate to say it you're going to come across as
Speaker:that sleazy car salesman.
Speaker:And nobody wants to be pitched products.
Speaker:They actually go on Instagram to be motivated.
Speaker:They want to be inspired and they want to learn.
Speaker:They don't want to be sold to.
Speaker:So the best way to do this is through content categories.
Speaker:And you can basically just categorize the types of posts that
Speaker:you're going to create.
Speaker:And they can be something like lifestyle posts.
Speaker:It can be a behind the scenes post.
Speaker:I would rather see Sally a picture of her actually making
Speaker:her pottery and maybe the steps she goes through.
Speaker:Then just showing me a final photo of the pottery and
Speaker:then say,
Speaker:click here to buy.
Speaker:I would rather see her working cause I can make more
Speaker:of a connection with another woman working on her pottery.
Speaker:Maybe she's got an actual brick and mortar business.
Speaker:Maybe she does this in her garage or basement.
Speaker:Like someone's going to relate to you better if they actually
Speaker:see your process into doing something.
Speaker:Another great content category is tips and tutorials.
Speaker:Maybe Sally can give tips on how to use pottery in
Speaker:the different seasons that we have,
Speaker:how to stage a room,
Speaker:how to change the mood or how to use them for
Speaker:parties, how to use them for events.
Speaker:Like there's so many other ways to teach people how to
Speaker:use the pottery in their home.
Speaker:What are the benefits to putting pottery in your home?
Speaker:I personally don't know,
Speaker:but maybe there are some benefits.
Speaker:Maybe there are some mood benefits to staging some pottery with
Speaker:greenery in front of a window.
Speaker:Like maybe it does something to our psychology and then also
Speaker:inspirational posts.
Speaker:She can use her beautiful pottery images and then overlay a
Speaker:quote, an inspirational quote or a motivational quote.
Speaker:So there's so many different ways to showcase your brand without
Speaker:selling your brand.
Speaker:Does that make sense too?
Speaker:It totally does.
Speaker:We've talked about this type of thing before,
Speaker:but I can't make the assumption that everyone who's listening today
Speaker:has been listening back through other episodes.
Speaker:So yes,
Speaker:it totally makes sense.
Speaker:Okay. So in terms of the content categories,
Speaker:we should create some different content categories.
Speaker:So that then we're not always thinking every time we want
Speaker:to post,
Speaker:well, what do we post these categories help align the content
Speaker:a bit,
Speaker:right? Yes.
Speaker:Okay. So that's good.
Speaker:So we have our content categories.
Speaker:And then when you talk about that,
Speaker:this shouldn't take a lot of time.
Speaker:I think that's where people get stuck.
Speaker:They feel like they've taken so much time,
Speaker:but probably random posting versus what you're describing here.
Speaker:Cause here,
Speaker:or there's a strategy underneath the plan and the posting.
Speaker:But how do we get to the point where we're not
Speaker:spending so much time on Instagram,
Speaker:but we get to see a little bit of growth happening.
Speaker:We get to see that the objective is actually being fulfilled
Speaker:and we're moving forward.
Speaker:What are your little tricks and tips there?
Speaker:Tiny. We all feel like it's so precious and it gets
Speaker:away from us so easily.
Speaker:And certainly on social that happens.
Speaker:Allison's going to share with us what we should do right
Speaker:after a quick break.
Speaker:Yes, it's possible.

Speaker:or find packaging?
Speaker:That includes a saying whose meaning is known to a select
Speaker:to not only are customers willing to pay for these special
Speaker:touches. They'll tell their friends and word will spread about your

Speaker:We're adding ingredient and flavor labels.
Speaker:To for more information,
Speaker:go to the ribbon print company.com.
Speaker:I will Share with you how now I map out all
Speaker:of my content monthly and weekly in three steps.
Speaker:So the first step is at the end of each month,
Speaker:I will print out the next month calendar on a sheet
Speaker:of paper,
Speaker:an eight and a half by 11.
Speaker:And I will look at the month.
Speaker:The first thing that I take a look at is if
Speaker:there are any events or holidays that I want to post
Speaker:about on Instagram,
Speaker:I will mark it on that day of the month.
Speaker:Next I will look at my content categories and remember my
Speaker:objective, right?
Speaker:What's my objective or my goal for the month.
Speaker:I'm going to make sure I write that down on my
Speaker:calendar. So it's front of mind.
Speaker:Then what I'll do is I will create my own consistency
Speaker:pattern and here's something about consistency.
Speaker:And I think your audience is going to love this answer.
Speaker:You get to decide your consistency.
Speaker:Don't worry about what other gurus are saying.
Speaker:If they're telling you to post two times a day,
Speaker:seven days a week to get to 10,000
Speaker:followers, forget all of that because the problem is,
Speaker:if you feel forced to show up in a certain way,
Speaker:you're not going to show up authentically and you're not going
Speaker:to do it consistently because eventually you're just going to stop
Speaker:doing it.
Speaker:Cause it doesn't feel right to you.
Speaker:I want you to show up on Instagram in a way
Speaker:that it feels right and aligned with your business and your
Speaker:brand. So if showing up four days a week in your
Speaker:newsfeed feels good to you,
Speaker:then that's what you're going to do consistently.
Speaker:Look at the calendar and just spread out those content categories
Speaker:throughout the month.
Speaker:And that's what I do.
Speaker:I will write down maybe on Monday,
Speaker:it's going to be an inspirational quote,
Speaker:maybe on Wednesday,
Speaker:it's going to be a tip and tutorial.
Speaker:So I will fill in the calendar with my content categories
Speaker:at that point.
Speaker:Does this make sense so far?
Speaker:Sure it does.
Speaker:So now you have the whole month mapped out and this
Speaker:is something that you can do under 20 minutes.
Speaker:So at the end of the month,
Speaker:you now have next month content mapped out,
Speaker:ready to go.
Speaker:So at this point I will sit down one day a
Speaker:week. Normally Fridays for me is my content creation day on
Speaker:Friday. I will sit down and look at that calendar and
Speaker:I will look at the next week.
Speaker:I will then create content for that specific week.
Speaker:So if I have four posts that I need to create,
Speaker:I will do them at that time where I will open
Speaker:up Canva and create any graphics that I need to pull
Speaker:some photos that I'm going to use that I already have
Speaker:on my phone.
Speaker:And I use a scheduler.
Speaker:I use tailwind to schedule my posts.
Speaker:That's when I'll upload the photos,
Speaker:I will write the captions,
Speaker:put in the hashtags and I will schedule it for the
Speaker:following week.
Speaker:That way when I show up next week,
Speaker:my content is done.
Speaker:All I have to do on Instagram is engaged with my
Speaker:audience and be fully present and intentional.
Speaker:I'm not worrying about what I'm going to post because I've
Speaker:already planned it.
Speaker:So you batch everything in one day,
Speaker:this is your plan.
Speaker:You know,
Speaker:the certain number of days a week,
Speaker:you're going to be posting then whether it's once a week,
Speaker:twice a month.
Speaker:So you do two weeks in a row or two weeks
Speaker:at once,
Speaker:whatever. So you sit down and you intentionally plan it all
Speaker:out and get it all set and scheduled.
Speaker:And then you don't have to look at it again.
Speaker:Yes, that's excellent.
Speaker:And many of you who are listening already know,
Speaker:I have that program content for makers that will fit nicely
Speaker:with what Alison's talking about here and give you some specific
Speaker:wording for your posts too.
Speaker:So by structure or by different categories,
Speaker:for example,
Speaker:like you're not going to use these exact things necessarily,
Speaker:but it gives you the idea based on your industry of
Speaker:what you should do.
Speaker:So it makes it super easy.
Speaker:I think the point is Alison people just taking the action
Speaker:and doing it.
Speaker:What do you say?
Speaker:So The implementation part can be tricky.
Speaker:So I think you have to just start somewhere.
Speaker:And when you map out your content and decide what you're
Speaker:going to do.
Speaker:And I always say to when it comes to Instagram,
Speaker:because a lot of people are like,
Speaker:oh, it's the newsfeed.
Speaker:It's Instagram stories.
Speaker:It's video,
Speaker:it's reels start with one thing because if you're not consistent
Speaker:right now,
Speaker:there's no way you're going to be consistent with doing all
Speaker:the features on Instagram.
Speaker:So start with one thing that is going to help you
Speaker:get consistent and actually implement.
Speaker:And if that's creating posts for your newsfeed,
Speaker:then do that.
Speaker:And once you feel really consistent with that,
Speaker:then you can add one more thing to it.
Speaker:But don't try to do all the things at once because
Speaker:there's just,
Speaker:I couldn't do it.
Speaker:I had to start with the one thing and then just
Speaker:build on it and build on it.
Speaker:And when you stay consistent,
Speaker:you will build that momentum.
Speaker:And you'll see,
Speaker:after six months after nine months of your own consistency pattern,
Speaker:you will grow.
Speaker:What do you say about like the whole thing right now
Speaker:is if you're going to do anything,
Speaker:do reels because supposedly that gets you so much visibility and
Speaker:followers. And then I also hear if you're going to do
Speaker:posts right on the feed just directly then do carousel posts.
Speaker:Cause those will perform better for that organic visibility.
Speaker:You hear things from all over the place about what to
Speaker:do. What do you say to that?
Speaker:Like how do you keep on top of it and do
Speaker:the things that are going to have the most impact?
Speaker:So right now Instagram reels and carousel posts will get you
Speaker:the most visibility reach engagement because that's what Instagram is favoring.
Speaker:But that doesn't mean that you can't still grow with newsfeed
Speaker:posts that is never going away.
Speaker:You still need to build the know like and trust.
Speaker:So even though you might get the visibility through Instagram reels,
Speaker:that doesn't mean it's your ideal audience and how are they
Speaker:really going to know what you sell or do.
Speaker:If that's all you provide is Instagram reels at first,
Speaker:they might be entertained by you.
Speaker:But then after a while,
Speaker:they're going to wonder,
Speaker:well, what do you do then?
Speaker:They're just going to unfollow You.
Speaker:Well, and honestly,
Speaker:I know it feels great when people have a million followers,
Speaker:but if they're not someone who would buy your product,
Speaker:it's feels good.
Speaker:It's makes for social credibility,
Speaker:I guess.
Speaker:But it doesn't really help you in terms of your business
Speaker:growth because you're not bringing in any sales.
Speaker:They're not your people.
Speaker:Yes. You want quality followers over quantity.
Speaker:Don't worry about getting to a certain number of followers.
Speaker:Don't worry about getting to 10,000
Speaker:to get the swipe up feature that does not matter.
Speaker:And honestly,
Speaker:you can take a look at some people on Instagram that
Speaker:have over 30,000
Speaker:followers. But if you look at their posts and they only
Speaker:have maybe 20 likes and six comments that is not quality,
Speaker:they may be bought them.
Speaker:They're bots.
Speaker:So we have to be very careful when we look at
Speaker:others and we assume that they're successful.
Speaker:We assume that,
Speaker:but we really don't know anything about their business on the
Speaker:back end.
Speaker:You know what else I heard recently,
Speaker:tell me what you think about this is that organic visibility.
Speaker:In other words,
Speaker:when people I'm saying this to people who are listening,
Speaker:Alison, not to you,
Speaker:of course,
Speaker:but when you put up a post,
Speaker:the number of people who are going to see it is
Speaker:based on all the algorithms that you hear all the time
Speaker:and not everybody who follows you is going to see it
Speaker:in their feed.
Speaker:And that's really not what I want to dive into.
Speaker:But what I've heard is that interaction and engagement to your
Speaker:individual posts as a percentage of the total gets you more
Speaker:reach. So if someone has 30,000
Speaker:followers, but 200 people respond to a post,
Speaker:let's say,
Speaker:they're not going to get as much reach as somebody who
Speaker:has a thousand followers and 200 people respond or engage with
Speaker:that post.
Speaker:So it's the percentage of your total following that helps reach
Speaker:expand. What do you say about that?
Speaker:Alison, In a nutshell,
Speaker:yes, it was a lot there and here's the thing I
Speaker:don't worry about reach and I don't worry about her Senate
Speaker:because again,
Speaker:I think we just need to simplify the fact that Instagram
Speaker:is just a marketing tool and it's just in your wheelhouse
Speaker:of tools that you're going to use to build your business.
Speaker:When we get stuck on the vanity metrics,
Speaker:then we're going to try to change what we're doing to
Speaker:increase a percentage.
Speaker:And like I said earlier,
Speaker:that is when our internal little low-key egos come out.
Speaker:And again,
Speaker:we're not just focusing on the serving and the helping that's
Speaker:when now we start to focus on the sale.
Speaker:So I don't pay too much attention to percentages and vanity
Speaker:metrics. The only thing as far as insights and metrics that
Speaker:I pay attention to is which posts gave me the most
Speaker:reach or engagement in the last 30 days.
Speaker:And I look at those posts and I look at what
Speaker:the photo was,
Speaker:what did I say in my caption and what was my
Speaker:call to action?
Speaker:And I will repurpose it into something new.
Speaker:You will repurpose that same post or you'll do more of
Speaker:the same or both I'll do More of the same.
Speaker:But to be honest with you,
Speaker:I could take the same caption that I did 30 days
Speaker:ago and just use it with the new picture.
Speaker:Nobody would know nobody remembers what anybody wrote 30 days ago,
Speaker:but if it performed well,
Speaker:I'm going to use it again.
Speaker:We'll Talk.
Speaker:How about this then for people who aren't as familiar with
Speaker:how to look at your metrics.
Speaker:So first off,
Speaker:that's why we say you have a business account because that's
Speaker:the only way you can look at anything.
Speaker:You don't analyze your account.
Speaker:You have to be on a business account,
Speaker:but then where should we go to look and what should
Speaker:we specifically be looking at?
Speaker:Okay. So when you're in your account,
Speaker:you can go to your profile,
Speaker:your account.
Speaker:And you're going to see in the top right corner,
Speaker:the three lines that people call them the hamburger or the
Speaker:three lines,
Speaker:and you're going to get a menu.
Speaker:And I think it's like the third item down,
Speaker:it's called insights.
Speaker:And when you choose insights,
Speaker:it's going to give you an insight overview of your audience,
Speaker:of the content you've shared.
Speaker:So when you scroll down to the content you've shared,
Speaker:you can actually click on your post and here you have
Speaker:the option at the top to do a search.
Speaker:I think it automatically goes to the last year,
Speaker:but I always like to look at the last 30 days.
Speaker:And when I look at the last 30 days,
Speaker:I like to look at different things.
Speaker:I like to look at the reach,
Speaker:how many accounts am I actually reaching?
Speaker:I also like to look at my saves and my shares
Speaker:because if people are saving and sharing my posts that tells
Speaker:me that the post is very valuable to them.
Speaker:So I am going to recreate those because I really want
Speaker:people to save and share because when they,
Speaker:first of all,
Speaker:save it,
Speaker:they're going to keep looking back at the post.
Speaker:But when they share it,
Speaker:they've most likely shared it to their Instagram stories,
Speaker:which now opens your post to a whole new audience.
Speaker:And that's another great way to grow.
Speaker:So creating shareable content is a really great way to grow
Speaker:your account.
Speaker:And what I mean,
Speaker:shareable content,
Speaker:that's creating lists,
Speaker:creating carousels tips,
Speaker:tutorials, infographics,
Speaker:people are going to share and save that kind of stuff.
Speaker:Do you feel like you have to tell people in your
Speaker:post copy to save it or to share it?
Speaker:I Have done both and I have not seen a difference.
Speaker:So I don't think you have to,
Speaker:I guess it just depends on your audience too,
Speaker:if they know,
Speaker:because I know for a long time,
Speaker:people didn't even think about sharing.
Speaker:They just kept it.
Speaker:And let's talk about the value of sharing,
Speaker:because this is another thing I think when you give first,
Speaker:it's always nice.
Speaker:And sometimes you get back,
Speaker:but let's talk about the value of sharing other people's posts
Speaker:that you think are valuable.
Speaker:Do you think that's a good idea?
Speaker:I do it all the time.
Speaker:Absolutely. Tell us in detail what you do.
Speaker:So if I like someone's post,
Speaker:I will,
Speaker:of course like it.
Speaker:I will comment on it and then I will share it
Speaker:to my stories.
Speaker:And I make sure in my stories,
Speaker:I will actually use the tag feature the tag button and
Speaker:tag them in it because now Instagram does not alert you.
Speaker:So you actually have to tag them in your Instagram stories.
Speaker:That is like the biggest thank you that you could ever
Speaker:do to somebody.
Speaker:And what's so nice is if someone shares my stuff and
Speaker:tags me,
Speaker:you bet I'm going to go to their account and support
Speaker:them. I'm going to go like and love on their post
Speaker:and find something that I know my audience would like,
Speaker:and I will share it again.
Speaker:It goes back to making connections.
Speaker:What do you think about reposting someone's content on your feed?
Speaker:If it's done Correctly,
Speaker:I do this all the time too.
Speaker:There's certain people that I really love their motivational quotes,
Speaker:so I will repost it and I will make sure that
Speaker:they're tagged.
Speaker:And I will put in there that this post credit to
Speaker:so-and-so or a picture credit to so-and-so as long as you
Speaker:tag them,
Speaker:I think it's fine.
Speaker:Cause you're getting credit to the original post There's posting apps
Speaker:too, that you can use that automatically also connect the credit
Speaker:back to them.
Speaker:So that's helpful.
Speaker:And those are great.
Speaker:Also for times when you don't know what to post on
Speaker:your feed,
Speaker:I've been planning to do more and more of that just
Speaker:to help spread the word of people that I think are
Speaker:fabulous and others should know about and helps them.
Speaker:And you do it because you want to give,
Speaker:but you're also getting cause then that's a post for you
Speaker:and you're providing value to your audience then as well.
Speaker:So I think that that works really nice.
Speaker:So you had,
Speaker:as I was gathering information about you,
Speaker:Allison, you had one sentence that really intrigued me,
Speaker:that I wanted to make sure that we covered you say
Speaker:what was one thing that you wished you would have known
Speaker:sooner about Instagram?
Speaker:And this feels like this is going to be really juicy.
Speaker:So how do you answer that?
Speaker:So here Is my,
Speaker:it's almost like a two part answer.
Speaker:Cause I know a lot of when they're getting started on
Speaker:Instagram, it can be a scary place.
Speaker:So first of all,
Speaker:we're consuming so much content and that's when that imposter syndrome
Speaker:sneaks in.
Speaker:So it's a two-part answer.
Speaker:First of all,
Speaker:I wish I would have started showing my face more because
Speaker:you don't hide behind your brand.
Speaker:Don't hide behind your products.
Speaker:Don't hide behind your logo.
Speaker:The best way to make connections on Instagram is by showing
Speaker:your face,
Speaker:either through your newsfeed,
Speaker:it's a boomerang in your Instagram stories,
Speaker:it's in your reels doing a live video,
Speaker:whatever it is,
Speaker:I think we need to be brave and we need to
Speaker:show our face because people do business with people.
Speaker:They don't do business with the brand.
Speaker:The second part of that answer is I wish I would
Speaker:have moved myself from a state of inspiration to a state
Speaker:of doing.
Speaker:And that goes back to that consuming so much content consuming
Speaker:content is good in the beginning,
Speaker:but we get trapped into staying stuck in that state of
Speaker:inspiration. You can keep downloading all the freebies.
Speaker:You can keep downloading all the calendars,
Speaker:the content calendars,
Speaker:but when you don't move to a state of doing and
Speaker:implement anything you've learned,
Speaker:you're never going to grow.
Speaker:So show your face and start implementing,
Speaker:Taking action for gosh sake.
Speaker:Sometimes I think when you're doing that learning and that downloading
Speaker:and the analyzing and oh my gosh,
Speaker:I can't do it till I have that content planner that
Speaker:I'm going to be getting at some point,
Speaker:all of that,
Speaker:you feel like you're taking action,
Speaker:but you really haven't taken any effective action.
Speaker:That's going to get you any followers.
Speaker:You have to actually do it,
Speaker:not do the planning of it.
Speaker:So I would challenge your listeners to take a selfie today
Speaker:in front of a window and introduce yourself to your audience.
Speaker:Ooh, I love it.
Speaker:What are they going to say?
Speaker:Give us the whole thing.
Speaker:No excuses.
Speaker:Yeah. Well,
Speaker:you know what?
Speaker:They can do two truths and a lie.
Speaker:So they share two truths and one lie and their audience
Speaker:has to try to choose which one is the,
Speaker:oh, I love that two truths and one lie.
Speaker:Okay. So you're going to take your phone.
Speaker:You're going to go into your Instagram account.
Speaker:Is this going to be a story Alison or what are
Speaker:we making this so that it stays.
Speaker:You're going to make this post.
Speaker:Okay. So we're going to take a picture,
Speaker:right? We want it to stay.
Speaker:It's not necessarily going to be a video,
Speaker:right? So just take a picture.
Speaker:So you don't even have to talk.
Speaker:And then in the comment,
Speaker:you're going to say two truths and one lie,
Speaker:which is it.
Speaker:And then you do your truths and your lies,
Speaker:whatever, which then initiates a response.
Speaker:Cause you gotta have people responding to you.
Speaker:Right? And the key is to respond back to them,
Speaker:keep the conversations going.
Speaker:So this is really easy.
Speaker:So this isn't even going into the stories and doing a
Speaker:poll or talking or anything like that.
Speaker:Wonderful. Whoever does this,
Speaker:I want you to tag me and Alison on it so
Speaker:that we can go and,
Speaker:and we can see,
Speaker:okay. So you're going to tag me at gift biz unwrapped
Speaker:and Alison,
Speaker:what is your handle on Instagram?
Speaker:It's my name?
Speaker:Alison Shoals.
Speaker:Okay. And Shoals is S C H O L E S.
Speaker:Of course there'll be links in the show notes.
Speaker:So I love when we have challenges like this and this
Speaker:is a fun one,
Speaker:plus I want to know everyone's truths and lies.
Speaker:So when do you ever reveal the lie?
Speaker:How do you do that?
Speaker:If you're going to follow through on this game,
Speaker:how are we going to reveal the law?
Speaker:I reveal The lie through each individual comment.
Speaker:So if they guess it,
Speaker:one of the truth,
Speaker:they'll go,
Speaker:Nope, try again and then see if they'll come back.
Speaker:Oh, so fun.
Speaker:But then if someone reads the comments going down,
Speaker:they'll end up seeing it anyway.
Speaker:Right. But normally most people don't,
Speaker:they will want to respond and gas because people like to
Speaker:give their Opinions or you just wait a day or two
Speaker:and then make a comment with what it is.
Speaker:Something like that.
Speaker:Very fun.
Speaker:Alison, tell us a little bit more about your business,
Speaker:the services that you provide and how people could find you
Speaker:if they want to talk with you further.
Speaker:Sure. So I am basically your Instagram coach and a podcaster.
Speaker:So you can listen to my podcasts.
Speaker:It's the social media for mompreneurs podcast.
Speaker:And then on my website at boss,
Speaker:lady and sweat pants.com,
Speaker:I have a ton of freebies and resources on there.
Speaker:You can get into Instagram coaching with me.
Speaker:I also do group coaching,
Speaker:one-on-one coaching.
Speaker:So there's a lot of options on my website.
Speaker:And then of course I would love for everyone to connect
Speaker:with me on Instagram at Alison Shoals.
Speaker:Perfect. Yeah.
Speaker:Cause that's what we're talking about after all wonderful.
Speaker:Well, this has been very interesting and I really appreciate your
Speaker:going along with me to help out Sally taking somebody who's
Speaker:in that position and giving us some very concrete steps that
Speaker:they should be taking along the way to start seeing some
Speaker:movement with their Instagram account.
Speaker:So it's been marvelous.
Speaker:Thank you so much,
Speaker:Alison. I appreciate your being with us today.
Speaker:Thanks for having me.
Speaker:Who's going to take us up on the posting challenge,
Speaker:two truths and one lie.
Speaker:Remember if you do it to tag both Alison and myself
Speaker:and me using the gift biz unwrapped handle so that we
Speaker:can see and share it forward.
Speaker:Getting more eyeballs on your business.
Speaker:Remember this Saturday is the first episode of our new test,
Speaker:airing time.
Speaker:I've told you now,
Speaker:so it's not a secret,
Speaker:but here's a clue about the episode topic.
Speaker:It's all about the secret and it's a good one.
Speaker:I can't wait for you to listen as always.
Speaker:Thanks so much for spending time with me today.
Speaker:If you'd like to show support for the podcast,
Speaker:a rating and review would mean so much to me and
Speaker:helps the show get seen by other makers.
Speaker:So it's a great way to pay it forward.
Speaker:Also make sure to follow the podcast.
Speaker:So then episodes are automatically downloaded to your phone.
Speaker:It doesn't cost a thing.
Speaker:And then you don't miss one either.
Speaker:Particularly now that our air dates are changing and now be

Speaker:which is really starting Saturday on the gift biz unwrapped podcasts.
