Are you experiencing numbing and tingling in your arms? In this video, Dr. Brad Wolf discusses the root problem and what you can do to get rid of these symptoms in your arms.

Numbness or tingling in your arms can be traced back to your nerve system – this happens when your nerves are irritated, stretched or compressed. The nerves that travel to your arms begin at the base of the neck and travel all the way to your hands. Damage here can put pressure on the nerves exiting the spine and can cause tingling, numbness, pain, burning and other symptoms in the arms and hands.

By improving your spinal architecture, you can position your body in a more upright posture with the center of your ears over your shoulders. This will reduce the effect of gravity on your body and neck, and ultimately protect the nerves that exit the lower neck region. The base of your neck is an area that is already prone to injury and deterioration due to the weight of the head, and is likely the cause of the tingling and numbing sensations in your arms.

In order to begin to fix your spinal architecture, you must first be aware of your posture, and be diligent in holding your head in an upright position. Once you are aware of your posture and head position, you must reinforce your body into this vertical position so it becomes more natural. This can be done by standing against a wall or other flat surface to feel how far back your head needs to be positioned in relation to your shoulders.

By applying this position to how you carry your body on a daily basis you will reduce the irritation and inflammation on your spine and exiting nerves. You can also reduce the inflammation by applying ice or a cold pack to the base of your neck.

As you maintain awareness of your posture and spinal positioning, strengthening will provide the crucial support and endurance you need to hold your head over your shoulders. Find activities that help strengthen your body, such as; lifting weights, doing bodyweight exercises, attending a strengthening class, or simply finding a strengthening activity at home. You Tube is an excellent resource for strength exercise ideas.
