Podfaded or inactive shows are seen as a drain on
Evo Terra:podcasting by some, cluttering up indexes and frustrating listeners.
Evo Terra:But in reality, they could be used as a material resource for podcast growth.
Evo Terra:Hello, and welcome to another Podcast Pontifications with me, Evo Terra.
Evo Terra:Can you breathe life back into a podfaded or inactive show?
Evo Terra:Or better yet, can you use that podfaded or inactive show of yours
Evo Terra:as a power source for something else?
Evo Terra:Now, there are all sorts of reasons why you may have a
Evo Terra:podfaded or an inactive show.
Evo Terra:I know I have a lot of podfaded and inactive shows that are still in a
Evo Terra:hosting account of mine somewhere.
Evo Terra:Maybe for you, you have an unlimited hosting plan.
Evo Terra:So, you know, unlimited hosting plan means you make a new show
Evo Terra:up all the time, whatever.
Evo Terra:Or maybe you're on a free hosting plan and that podfaded show is
Evo Terra:still there, you just haven't logged in in a very long time.
Evo Terra:Or whatever it is, the expense, if it does cost something, 'cause look, it
Evo Terra:doesn't cost a lot of money to host a podcast, maybe you put it on a lower
Evo Terra:tier or whatever, it's just not a big enough expense for you to take action on.
Evo Terra:So it's still there, which means some or all of the files, the audio
Evo Terra:files over that show that you may not have touched in years are still
Evo Terra:on a hosting provider somewhere.
Evo Terra:The RSS feed is still connected to the various apps and directories, which
Evo Terra:means even though they haven't seen it in a long time, some people, some
Evo Terra:devices at least, are probably still following or are subscribed to that feed.
Evo Terra:Because what I have seen in my years of doing this is that many people
Evo Terra:- I'll go with most people - don't bother to unfollow or unsubscribe
Evo Terra:from a podcast when that show stops sending out new episodes.
Evo Terra:I know that you do.
Evo Terra:I do.
Evo Terra:But most people do not.
Evo Terra:That's out of sight, out of mind.
Evo Terra:Now, back to you for a moment.
Evo Terra:There are all sorts of reasons why you might want to reactivate
Evo Terra:or unfade a podfaded show.
Evo Terra:Maybe it's to start it up again.
Evo Terra:Maybe there's enough activity there, and we'll talk about that
Evo Terra:in a second, to where it's time for you to get back into that thing.
Evo Terra:The reason it's on hiatus is because you said I'm going to get back to it.
Evo Terra:Maybe it's time to do that.
Evo Terra:Okay.
Evo Terra:Maybe though, it's time for you to change that show, maybe change the focus
Evo Terra:and direction, the topic, whatever, and turn around and relaunch it.
Evo Terra:Or as mentioned previously, you could use that podfaded show as a
Evo Terra:power source to drive traffic to another podcast or another property.
Evo Terra:You can do all of those things.
Evo Terra:But are any of them worth the effort?
Evo Terra:That's what stops most people from reactivating or doing
Evo Terra:something with their podfaded show.
Evo Terra:That's the question.
Evo Terra:What's the effort - is the effort worth it?
Evo Terra:Because we really don't know how many people are subscribed or follow the feed.
Evo Terra:We don't.
Evo Terra:And sure, we can get some follower/subscriber data from like Apple
Evo Terra:Podcasts and Spotify and Google Podcasts.
Evo Terra:They give some of that data.
Evo Terra:But that means the show already had to be in Apple Podcasts,
Evo Terra:Spotify, and Google Podcasts.
Evo Terra:And if it wasn't, if you didn't set your account up, you may
Evo Terra:not have any of that data.
Evo Terra:It just might not be there.
Evo Terra:The history may not be there.
Evo Terra:There's also the fact that even if you can get the data, you're failing
Evo Terra:to capture the long tail of other apps people might have used to listen
Evo Terra:to your show, not Apple Podcasts, Spotify, and/or Google Podcasts.
Evo Terra:And all of those long tail subscribers, followers ad up.
Evo Terra:So here's what you can do.
Evo Terra:Drop an episode into that faded show.
Evo Terra:Just drop an episode of something into that faded show and count
Evo Terra:the number of downloads it gets.
Evo Terra:But only over the first few days.
Evo Terra:That's all you're looking for.
Evo Terra:It's a test to find out if there are still people connected, if there are
Evo Terra:still devices connected that will automatically download that content.
Evo Terra:That's important.
Evo Terra:I mean, the episode, again, can be whatever.
Evo Terra:We don't really care.
Evo Terra:Maybe it's a new file where you just go, " Tap, is this thing on?"
Evo Terra:Or something along those lines.
Evo Terra:Or maybe even a lower effort than that.
Evo Terra:If you've got a promo that's handy for a show you're producing, drop that in there.
Evo Terra:All you're trying to do is find out how many devices are connected and
Evo Terra:how many people will quickly click, say, "Ooh, something new from the
Evo Terra:show I haven't heard for a long time."
Evo Terra:Just do a count.
Evo Terra:And once you've done that count, if those numbers of downloads suddenly look
Evo Terra:attractive to you, whether it's dozens or hundreds or thousands, in some case, it
Evo Terra:might be worth the effort to do something.
Evo Terra:Maybe relaunch.
Evo Terra:Of course you could do that.
Evo Terra:Or maybe redirect those subscribers to a new or active show.
Evo Terra:Or just a different show.
Evo Terra:Yeah.
Evo Terra:Use it as a power source.
Evo Terra:They're there, subscribed.
Evo Terra:Give them the new show, move them to the new show.
Evo Terra:Now, a couple of caveats before you run out and do this immediately.
Evo Terra:Look, I'm not about to redirect my defunct travel/comedy podcast
Evo Terra:over to Podcast Pontifications.
Evo Terra:It's a bad fit.
Evo Terra:I try and be a little funny here on this show, but it's look, it's
Evo Terra:just not what it was designed for.
Evo Terra:So do not do that.
Evo Terra:Make sure that there's a fit.
Evo Terra:The second caveat, though, is that just doing the test will cause some
Evo Terra:people to unfollow/unsubscribe from that show they've thought was dead.
Evo Terra:You can't change that from happening.
Evo Terra:You can try with making really great content, but just like you and I both
Evo Terra:unsubscribed from a crazy number of retailers from Black Friday that we
Evo Terra:haven't heard from in an entire year.
Evo Terra:Same thing's going to happen to us, but that's okay.
Evo Terra:That's okay.
Evo Terra:The majority of the people won't do that.
Evo Terra:They'll just simply swipe it or delete it or whatever, and move on.
Evo Terra:You'll get the majority of them over to the new show.
Evo Terra:Or maybe again, the size of that audience was big enough to where
Evo Terra:now you're motivated to breathe new life into that podfaded show.
Evo Terra:Or maybe you can sell it.
Evo Terra:I don't really care.
Evo Terra:It's totally up to you.
Evo Terra:Ask your podcasting friends if they have any podfaded shows, I bet
Evo Terra:they do, in their hosting account.
Evo Terra:And maybe see if they're interested in doing this as a test.
Evo Terra:Collaborate together.
Evo Terra:Go ahead and share this episode with them.
Evo Terra:This will explain the concept to them.
Evo Terra:And maybe it's something you can collaborate on and go forward.
Evo Terra:And obviously, if you like this idea, and go, wow that was cool, Evo,
Evo Terra:head to buymeacoffee.com/EvoTerra, and slide a virtual coffee my way.
Evo Terra:Next week is May in 2021, at least by the day I'm recording this.
Evo Terra:That means it's only a month away before I take roughly a six-week
Evo Terra:break before bringing you season four of Podcast Pontifications.
Evo Terra:I'm going to be reaching out to every single one of you who has graciously
Evo Terra:bought me a coffee over the years and talk about some opportunities
Evo Terra:for you and Podcast Pontifications you might want to be a part of.
Evo Terra:So keep your eye on that.
Evo Terra:Enjoy the rest of your Thursday.
Evo Terra:No episodes from me on Friday.
Evo Terra:So enjoy your weekend.
Evo Terra:Think about reactivating these shows or using them to power
Evo Terra:something new you're doing.
Evo Terra:And I shall be back not tomorrow, but on Monday, yes, with
Evo Terra:another Podcast Pontifications.
