Childish Gambino

Childish Gambino, A.K.A. Donald Glover, has accomplished a massive amount in his 36 years. He wrote for Tina Fey when he was just 23 years old on the sitcom 30 rock. He starred in Community, and he is currently starring in Atlanta. He won two primetime Emmy’s and two Golden Globe Awards for Atlanta. He was in SOLO: A Starwars Story, Spiderman: Far From Home, Magic Mike XXL, The Martian, and voiced Simba in The Lion King remake of 2019. His first Album, Camp, came out in 2011. Then, his second album Because the Internet was released in 2013. Then in 2016 he released his third album, Awake My Love. The song This is America won four Grammys in 2019. His most recent album, 3.15.20, was released in March of 2020.

3.15.20

First, the name. 3.15.20 comes from the soft release date of the album. However, this album does have a real name (sorta). He released the album on his website DonaldGloverPresents.com but it was taken down just 12 hours later. As a result, the album is affectionately known as Donald Glover Presents. However, the record wasn’t officially released until a week later, 3/22/2020.

This album got great reviews from critics, scoring an 83/10 composite metacritic score. All of the other reviews were very high as well, with many reviewers drawing parallels between the themes of the album and the way he uses harmony and unexpected sounds. The unexpected sounds and harmonies fit perfectly together, which is perfect for the lyrical content, pointing out that we shouldn’t fear the unknown, but embrace it because it can make some incredible things.

This record featured 9 different producers, Glover being the main one on nearly every song. The result was a really unified and well done album. 3.15.20 peaked at number 13 on the Billboard Top 200.

Next week we will talk in-depth about the songs that make up the album. Listen with us (https://open.spotify.com/album/3Vsbl0diFGw8HNSjG8ue9m?si=iXS1ThYwSPuRFcklGDygGA) and see if you agree with what we think!
