We're back! We've a new name, new artwork and a new intro/outro (although the tech has defeated me so it isn't as I would like...)
In this episode I'll be talking about why I've rebranded, the reason for the recent break and what you can learn from it

Welcome to the beyond the kitchen cable
podcast, the podcast for entrepreneurs
2
:and small business owners that want
to build a successful business.
3
:I'm Marie, a website,
designer and strategist.
4
:And I'll be sharing simple and
actionable website tips, marketing
5
:strategies, and ideas to help
your business run more smoothly.
6
:So let's get started.
7
:Hello, and welcome to episode 106 of
the beyond the kitchen table podcast.
8
:Now you may have noticed that
there hasn't been a podcast for a
9
:few weeks, or maybe you haven't.
10
:We always assumed when we miss
a podcast episode or we miss
11
:emailing our list, or we have a
break from posting on social media.
12
:The people are waiting for us
and notice when we're not there.
13
:That's not always the case.
14
:But in any event I'd like to thank you
for coming back and for bearing with me.
15
:There were two reasons for
the break in the podcast.
16
:There is the excuse and the real reason.
17
:And I'm going to come onto those shortly.
18
:I'm going to be very honest about why.
19
:Running a business is hard work and it's
not always all sunshine and rainbows
20
:or whatever the right phrase is.
21
:You might have also noticed
that the podcast has a new name.
22
:It's got a different introduction.
23
:And a different outro.
24
:If you listen to the end.
25
:It's also got a new cover.
26
:Yes, it has been rebranded.
27
:The rebrand is the excuse.
28
:If you like for the podcast break.
29
:I've been meaning to
rebrand for some months.
30
:It was certainly something I
intended to do over the summer break.
31
:And I did think episode
number a hundred or 101.
32
:Really good time for a rebrand.
33
:But I just didn't get around to it.
34
:So why rebrand?
35
:Well, the podcast is now two years old.
36
:I know time flies and it felt like
a good time to have a freshen up.
37
:The main reason though.
38
:Is that I fallen out of love
with the name, the website coach.
39
:It doesn't really describe the podcast
and it doesn't tie into my brand name.
40
:I'm not intending for the
podcast to change beyond that
41
:new name and visual look.
42
:Then we'll still be solo episodes
for me talking about website tips.
43
:Marketing and other things to do
with running a small business.
44
:There will also still be
guest interviews with others.
45
:Who've run their own small businesses.
46
:So you can learn from what they have done.
47
:And I love those guest interviews.
48
:I think they're really important
to hear from other people.
49
:Let's talk about the name though.
50
:When I first decided to podcast
about two and a half years ago.
51
:I knew exactly who I wanted
the podcast to appeal to.
52
:And I knew the kind of things
that I wanted to talk about.
53
:I had a long list of topics and I've
still got a long list of topics.
54
:And I knew the kind of
interviews that I wanted to do.
55
:And none of that has changed.
56
:But the name was a sticking point.
57
:I paid for some time with podcast coach.
58
:And one of the things we
talked about was the name.
59
:I was keen to have the name website
in the title because I wanted to
60
:get found if anybody was searching
for podcasts about websites.
61
:To be honest, I'm not sure many people do.
62
:But I knew the marketing
landscape was too competitive to
63
:compete on the term marketing.
64
:So the podcast is, is more about
marketing than websites, but this
65
:is different to other marketing.
66
:Podcasts and that it talks
about websites more than others.
67
:Do.
68
:So I brainstormed with Kate and we
came up with key potential names,
69
:winning website and the website coach.
70
:And I did what lots of people
do when they're faced with
71
:a dilemma between two names.
72
:I did a poll.
73
:So I did a Poland, Instagram.
74
:And.
75
:My father was an Instagram voted
overwhelmingly for the website coach.
76
:I also did a poll in a small
coaching group that I was in.
77
:And yes, you guessed it.
78
:They voted overwhelmingly
for winning websites.
79
:Now.
80
:To be fair.
81
:When I did that poll, it
was a post in the group.
82
:And some of the people who
answered very early on, obviously
83
:went for winning website.
84
:And I think other people
just followed that.
85
:So I'm not sure it was necessarily.
86
:Quite so objective as the poll on
Instagram, which was, people didn't
87
:know what the people had voted for.
88
:Which is why I went for the website coach.
89
:Now.
90
:I'm not a coach.
91
:And I don't have any
ambition to become a coach.
92
:But this podcast does educate.
93
:Or at least that's the aim.
94
:I want to share things with you, talk
about things that make a good website,
95
:things which are really helpful for
your marketing and things, which
96
:empower you to make the most of your
website to build a successful business.
97
:And what do you call
somebody who does that?
98
:The podcast name I knew was one of those
decisions I could stay stuck on forever.
99
:And the podcast just wouldn't happen
or it wouldn't happen for ages.
100
:Or I could make a
decision and make it work.
101
:That is my new mantra in life.
102
:Make a decision and make it work.
103
:I can't remember where I first
heard it, but I really like it.
104
:So I decided to go with
website coach and make it work.
105
:I've had several conversations with.
106
:Other business owners
and coaches about it.
107
:And I know that the name could be better.
108
:The question then is
what should the name be?
109
:Well, I decided to go
with my business name.
110
:Beyond the kitchen table, because just
like my business, this is about building
111
:a business beyond the kitchen table.
112
:Is it perfect.
113
:No.
114
:Is it better?
115
:Well, it does tie in
with my business name.
116
:I seriously considered
around the kitchen table.
117
:As these episodes are
intended to be conversational.
118
:Like friends chatting over a cup of
tea and biscuits at a kitchen table.
119
:But I worried that that is too
similar to by business name
120
:and might lead to confusion.
121
:I might be on the kitchen table
or around the kitchen table.
122
:And I've just trademark my business name.
123
:I really do like it.
124
:And you can listen to episode 105.
125
:If you're interested in hearing
more about the trademarking process.
126
:So I have decided to go with beyond
the kitchen table and to make it work.
127
:And please tell me if you've
got any other ideas for a name.
128
:Please do let me know, because I am
open to rebranding again in the future.
129
:But not too soon.
130
:I promise it's not going to be a new.
131
:Name every single week.
132
:So that's my rambling excuse
for the break in my podcast.
133
:And a little bit about what's
going on behind the scenes.
134
:But do you want to know the real
reason I had a four week break?
135
:Yep.
136
:I thought you might.
137
:Like everybody else.
138
:I am human.
139
:And I only have so many hours each week.
140
:I don't have one of those time
machines, like Hamani Granger.
141
:That means that I can
repeat time to fit in more.
142
:I am fortunate and I recognize I'm
fortunate that my children are older.
143
:I've got one at university and
the others just started six, four.
144
:And they don't need as much of
my time as when they were little.
145
:My youngest now even
takes the bus to school.
146
:She has to leave really early.
147
:So my husband takes a, when he goes to
the office and I only have to pick her
148
:up from the bus stop in the evening.
149
:That's given me more time.
150
:I'm also fortunate to work from home.
151
:I don't have to spend time commuting.
152
:But I still have a dog that needs walking.
153
:A pile of laundry that doesn't do itself.
154
:Nor does the dishwasher fill an empty
itself and all the other chores that come
155
:with being a wife, a mum, and a homeowner.
156
:And alone, my children are older.
157
:They certainly still need my time.
158
:And I still worry about them.
159
:You know, they take up mental capacity.
160
:There are only so many hours in the
week and some of them are taken.
161
:And my days of working until the
small hours are well and truly over.
162
:I left that behind when
I left my corporate job.
163
:And working in investment banking,
believe me meant more than one
164
:occasion where I had meetings through
the night and into the next day.
165
:I need my sleep.
166
:Otherwise, I just can't perform.
167
:And this podcast takes a lot of time.
168
:I've also been very busy over the
last month or so with building client
169
:websites, I've had lots of discovery
calls and new clients booking
170
:in, which is exactly what I want.
171
:And I booked up well into January.
172
:I've launched and been
creating my SEO course.
173
:SEO may simple, which has
gone so well, so much.
174
:Great progress is being
made by those on the course.
175
:But I'm not just recording the modules.
176
:And also live coaching every week.
177
:And that takes time.
178
:And again, it takes mental capacity.
179
:There are lots of other things
I've been trying to do my
180
:business, other forms of marketing.
181
:So networking meetings, Instagram,
digital PR, and my own SEO.
182
:I've also been rethinking
how I work with clients.
183
:I want to make it quicker and easier
for my clients, as well as making
184
:things quicker and easier for me.
185
:I'll talk about that on another episode.
186
:I mentioned I'm fully booked.
187
:I've also got a couple of clients
whose websites would each be completed
188
:before the summer, but they weren't
because things happened to my clients.
189
:That's life.
190
:It often happens.
191
:And that means I'm actually at.
192
:Over capacity.
193
:Uh, bespoke website bills
takes a lot of hours.
194
:I can't just knock out a website.
195
:That's been delayed on a
free Wednesday afternoon.
196
:And I run this business
pretty much on my own.
197
:I know, I know I should add source more.
198
:But.
199
:It's hard to find the right people.
200
:People who are reliable
people who will do a good job.
201
:I am very picky.
202
:I have high standards and
that don't cost a fortune.
203
:I do have a VA who helps with my course.
204
:And she's amazing.
205
:I've also got a couple of developers
that I can outsource things to, which
206
:are particularly tricky so that I don't
have to do a lot of research into them.
207
:They do that for me.
208
:And I also work with a freelance web
designer who helps me with some websites.
209
:But she's not a clone of me, so I
can't just hand the website off to her.
210
:And there are parts of the process
that I will always do myself.
211
:As I said, there are only
so many hours in a week.
212
:I can't do everything.
213
:I'm human.
214
:Something has to give.
215
:And at the end of September.
216
:And October, I decided
that had to be the podcast.
217
:In two years, I've published 105 episodes.
218
:And I've missed just one
week in those two years.
219
:Publishing my podcast each week has
always been a must do for me because
220
:I know that consistency is important.
221
:But a 20 minute solo episode
takes me about four to six hours.
222
:I've got to outline it, record it.
223
:Edited and schedule it.
224
:That's a lot of time.
225
:And that doesn't include marketing it.
226
:Which to be honest, I'm rubbish air
because by the time I've scheduled it,
227
:I've just had enough of that episode.
228
:And whilst I love doing the podcast.
229
:I'm not convinced.
230
:It gives you the best return on my time.
231
:Way back in episode 47.
232
:So that's more than a year ago.
233
:I talked about the fact that a podcast
is not the client generating machine.
234
:I had been led to believe it might be.
235
:I don't know, maybe
I'm not doing it right.
236
:But in two years, I've had one client
tell me they found me through the podcast.
237
:Yes.
238
:Just one in two years.
239
:Now it's not quite that bad.
240
:I know many people who listened to
my podcast have found me elsewhere.
241
:They've met me at an event, a
friend has told them about me.
242
:They followed me on Instagram, et cetera.
243
:Then they start to listen to my
podcast and it's in regularly.
244
:And this podcast deepens
that relationship.
245
:Coming on every week.
246
:Keeps me top of mind.
247
:And I hear from so many of
you, how much you enjoyed the
248
:podcast and how helpful it is.
249
:So this podcast really
helps my marketing effort.
250
:It may not attract many
new people into my world.
251
:But it definitely builds
trust and keeps me visible.
252
:And I'm very grateful to everybody
who listens to this podcast.
253
:But those four to six hours
could be spent on other things.
254
:Kite work.
255
:We engineering my processes to
make my websites better and more
256
:efficient to create making it
easier and better for clients.
257
:More training.
258
:I'm always learning, going to networking
events to meet some new people.
259
:Out.
260
:You'd be pleased to hear that after
talking myself out of it for so long.
261
:And I've mentioned it a few times
on this podcast, I finally went
262
:to a chamber of commerce event.
263
:I'll talk about that on a future episode.
264
:Posting on Instagram.
265
:And if you're on Instagram, if you
follow me, you might've noticed
266
:I've been posting much more often
over the past couple of weeks.
267
:And if you don't follow
me, I'm beyond the KT.
268
:So please do follow me.
269
:I have, I am going to keep
up my posting on Instagram.
270
:I've also managed to keep
on top of my inbox for once.
271
:Anybody else, find it hard to
keep on top of their inbox.
272
:It's not my favorite job in the world.
273
:I don't quite know why, because
I, I like talking to people.
274
:I like corresponding with people.
275
:And just trying to keep
my stress levels in check.
276
:Because I've recorded so many
of these episodes last minute.
277
:I could have sugarcoated this
and called it season two of
278
:the podcast now rebranded.
279
:But I think it's helpful
to hear the trees.
280
:Uh, for you to understand.
281
:You can drop balls and it's fine.
282
:They can be picked up again
when you have the capacity.
283
:My numbers may drop that's number of
downloads might drop, but that's okay.
284
:I can accept that.
285
:And to be honest, I did consider
stopping the podcast altogether.
286
:And whilst truthfully, I'm not
sure the podcast has been worth
287
:the time and effort I've put in.
288
:I do enjoy it.
289
:And I've built up a loyal following.
290
:I also feel like the effort I
put in is beginning to pay off.
291
:You know, I'm just about to
find that diamond, if you like.
292
:But going forward.
293
:I'm not going to commit to
launching a new episode every week.
294
:I will try.
295
:I'll also try and batch record episodes,
but that takes even more time out of
296
:the weeks that I do that batching.
297
:I do have an interview recorded
that just needs editing.
298
:I've got another episode outlined and
I've got loads of ideas for episodes.
299
:So I'm not about to ghost you.
300
:But my podcast is no longer
going to be a must do every week.
301
:When it comes to a Sunday.
302
:And I don't have an episode recorded.
303
:Or when I've had a week, that's been so
busy with client work that I just don't
304
:have the time to outline an episode.
305
:I'm going to be kind to myself.
306
:The podcast bull will be dropped again.
307
:And please don't feel guilty
if you have to drop a ball.
308
:Some wise person told me.
309
:And I'm going to credit Emma Jeffries.
310
:I think it may well have been Emma
Emma's Barry wise, and this is
311
:the kind of thing she would say.
312
:She was on episode 86.
313
:You want to go and listen
to more of her advice.
314
:Symbols are made of glass and
will chip or break when dropped.
315
:They're very fragile.
316
:But others bounce back or
can be picked up again.
317
:And whilst that businesses may be
more successful, if we're consistent.
318
:We're also human.
319
:And our businesses are not glass balls.
320
:And on that note, I
will see you next week.
321
:Or maybe not.
322
:And I really want to thank you for
coming back and listening to me again.
323
:I am very grateful for
all of my listeners.
324
:And have a great week.
