Hi there.
Speaker:It's Sue.
Speaker:And thanks for joining me for tips and talk day.
Speaker:These are bite-sized topics that I pull from community questions and
Speaker:things that I'm observing in the world of handmade small business.
Speaker:If you'd like to submit a topic,
Speaker:DME, over on Instagram at gift biz unwrapped,
Speaker:if you started a business around your handmade product,
Speaker:you plan to have people buy it,
Speaker:right, obviously,
Speaker:but here lies a potential problem and common mistake.
Speaker:I see people make just because your creations are perfection in
Speaker:terms of style and workmanship.
Speaker:And you've gotten compliments from friends,
Speaker:family, and beyond that,
Speaker:doesn't automatically mean that people will pull out their credit cards
Speaker:and buy it's.
Speaker:For this reason that I was thrilled.
Speaker:When I saw Doreen post a photo in gift biz breeze
Speaker:for a new holiday product she's made.
Speaker:And she asked for feedback on whether we think it's going
Speaker:to sell.
Speaker:I'm happy because she's asking the question.
Speaker:Most people don't.
Speaker:The common mistake is to assume people will buy it's the,
Speaker:if I make it,
Speaker:they will buy field of dreams,
Speaker:mentality. Then a lot of inventory is made,
Speaker:which as we all know is an investment of time and
Speaker:money into materials and production,
Speaker:of course,
Speaker:but it's all done before you even know if it's going
Speaker:to sell.
Speaker:So what's the solution.
Speaker:How do you determine a sales winner?
Speaker:The hard answer is at first,
Speaker:you don't,
Speaker:especially when you're brand new,
Speaker:still getting a feel for your market.
Speaker:You don't know for sure about product interest,
Speaker:not to mention the best sizes,
Speaker:flavors and colors that your specific audience will want.
Speaker:This all comes with time,
Speaker:but fear not.
Speaker:When you ask the question and validate your product first,
Speaker:you'll save yourself a lot of axed.
Speaker:It's also in this beginning stage that adjustments are really easy
Speaker:still, and you're not stuck with a lot of unsaleable product.
Speaker:You can make the necessary tweaks to your product that do
Speaker:interest your customers and entice them to place those orders.
Speaker:Or you switch out the product entirely because as adorable as
Speaker:it is,
Speaker:nobody actually really wants it.
Speaker:Specially, if they have to pay for it,
Speaker:gosh, that's a hard pill to swallow.
Speaker:Isn't it.
Speaker:But way better to know this early on,
Speaker:than later in the game,
Speaker:the best way to approach product validation is at a live
Speaker:show. Whether it's a craft show,
Speaker:holiday church,
Speaker:Bazaar, or farmer's market,
Speaker:getting in front of people with your product is the golden
Speaker:research ticket.
Speaker:You have the opportunity to see how they behave when first
Speaker:seen your products.
Speaker:And you also have the ability to ask questions,
Speaker:questions to yourself,
Speaker:and then also for your customers directly,
Speaker:things that you'll think about in your own mind and ask,
Speaker:as you're observing are of all the products I'm showing,
Speaker:which ones are people gravitating to most?
Speaker:Do they know what it is and how to use it?
Speaker:Don't laugh.
Speaker:This is important because I've seen some products out there where
Speaker:people really aren't quite sure what it is.
Speaker:Here's another question.
Speaker:How are people interacting with my products?
Speaker:Do they pick up the shells and test to see how
Speaker:soft they are?
Speaker:Do they open a candle jar to smell the scent?
Speaker:Do they check out the weight of your largest earrings side
Speaker:note here?
Speaker:When someone picks up your products,
Speaker:take note,
Speaker:not only of which ones they're reaching for,
Speaker:but what you think it is.
Speaker:They're trying to discover by picking it up.
Speaker:All of this observation is valuable unto itself,
Speaker:but interacting in hearing from your customers directly is another way
Speaker:to learn how people are responding to your creations,
Speaker:ask them about how they think they'll use it.
Speaker:Is it for themselves or a gift,
Speaker:or maybe you've been thinking of adding in more sense.
Speaker:So give them some options of some of the sense you're
Speaker:considering and listen to what they suggest and what they would
Speaker:like best.
Speaker:There are so many ways to interact with questions.
Speaker:Where are you planning on hanging your new painting?
Speaker:Have you already decided where in your home,
Speaker:this new Afghan will go?
Speaker:Are you buying this necklace for a special event?
Speaker:Things like that.
Speaker:It gives you great ideas for social posts.
Speaker:In addition to educating you with what goes on in your
Speaker:customer's head,
Speaker:plus it starts establishing a relationship between you and your potential
Speaker:customer. So back to the main point here today,
Speaker:how do you know if something will sell?
Speaker:If it's a version of a product that you already have,
Speaker:you should be able to gauge sales success for that product
Speaker:based on projections,
Speaker:off of your own experience and sales numbers.
Speaker:Or if you have a friend who makes a similar product,
Speaker:they live maybe three states away or so.
Speaker:And they see that it's really taking off.
Speaker:That could be a good indication that it might work for
Speaker:you as well.
Speaker:But notice I said might because every market is just a
Speaker:little bit different.
Speaker:However, the odds in this case are stacked in your favor.
Speaker:But if your product has never been seen before,
Speaker:you'll have to try it out to see you won't know
Speaker:until you do.
Speaker:So. The answer to the question,
Speaker:how do I know if my product will sell or not?
Speaker:You won't until you test,
Speaker:but when you do test the market and validate that there
Speaker:are customers who are willing to buy what you make,
Speaker:you've just shortcut your path to growth and can go full
Speaker:steam ahead,
Speaker:not through wishful thinking,
Speaker:but through testing and real Results.
Speaker:That's a wrap.
Speaker:I'm a get to the point kind of girl.
Speaker:And this is what you can expect from these quick midweek
Speaker:sessions. Now it's your turn go out and fulfill that dream
Speaker:of yours,
Speaker:share your handmade products with them.
Speaker:We get to the point and they bring us both.
Speaker:And this is what you can expect from these quick sessions.
Speaker:Now it's your turn go out and fulfill that dream of
Speaker:yours. Share your handmade products with us.
