Speaker:It wasn't help with an email marketing strategy.
Speaker:It wasn't about selling it shows or any other number of
Speaker:topics that make up a solid growing business.
Speaker:Nope. What you're overwhelmingly asking for is help with social media
Speaker:posting. You've been telling me that you're putting in the time
Speaker:you're posting frequently and you're discouraged because you aren't seeing any
Speaker:of this move the needle for your sales message received,
Speaker:putting in more and more time posting in the same way.
Speaker:Isn't going to magically bring you in the sales.
Speaker:You need to change the way you're posting and what you're
Speaker:posting. You don't need to put in more work.
Speaker:You need to put in the right work.

Speaker:I'm getting ahead of myself here.
Speaker:The first part of each bash is a short training from
Speaker:yours truly.
Speaker:And today we're talking email marketing now more than ever.
Speaker:It's important to put this in place.
Speaker:I know it can seem daunting,
Speaker:but when you know the steps to getting started,
Speaker:you're going to see it's not that difficult at all.
Speaker:Hello and welcome to what is now the fourth bash.
Speaker:I am here with a number of fabulous handmade business owners
Speaker:that you're going to hear from shortly.
Speaker:But first I want to dive into a topic that is
Speaker:coming up more and more.
Speaker:Have you been hearing about it more and more to email
Speaker:marketing? There is more attention being given to this now more
Speaker:than ever,
Speaker:because lots of social media platforms are changing.
Speaker:Everyone's kind of wondering what's going on.
Speaker:And email marketing ends up being the place where you have
Speaker:the most stability.
Speaker:That's what we're going to talk about specifically,
Speaker:how to start an email marketing program.
Speaker:I've been finding within gift biz breeze,
Speaker:my Facebook group,
Speaker:but that's always a big question.
Speaker:You know,
Speaker:there's other questions around email marketing,
Speaker:but the biggest obstacle is,
Speaker:as it is,
Speaker:I guess,
Speaker:with lots of things is just getting started.
Speaker:You might have thought about sending out emails to attract people
Speaker:to your business and to stay in touch.
Speaker:And if you are doing it already a huge high five,
Speaker:because I think it's going to become more and more important
Speaker:as we go on.
Speaker:And if you haven't ever thought about it before,
Speaker:it's important to start thinking about it and get started.
Speaker:And that is my goal here for you is to understand
Speaker:why I'm saying it's so important.
Speaker:And then the very simple steps you need to take to
Speaker:get going.
Speaker:The first thing is why.
Speaker:And the biggest,
Speaker:most significant thing is you now have control over being able
Speaker:to communicate with people that you have started to interact with,
Speaker:who would possibly be interested in buying a product from you.
Speaker:Maybe they aren't ready to buy right away.
Speaker:Maybe they already have bought.
Speaker:Maybe there are people that you run into in networking meetings.
Speaker:There are so many different ways that we run into people.
Speaker:And if you're able to collect their email,
Speaker:this is one asset.
Speaker:I'll say that you own,
Speaker:that will allow you to be in control of being able
Speaker:to communicate with people further.
Speaker:It really is a powerful asset for your business.
Speaker:And if ever you were to get to a point or
Speaker:you hear about other people who are looking at selling their
Speaker:businesses, an email list is worth money.
Speaker:It adds to the value of your business.
Speaker:For that reason,
Speaker:you have a list of people,
Speaker:list of contacts,
Speaker:customers, and prospect who have raised their hand and voiced interest
Speaker:in you in the past.
Speaker:Also going along the lines of being a powerful asset,
Speaker:we need to always remember that when people intercept with us
Speaker:for the first time,
Speaker:they are not always in a position where they have a
Speaker:need or are interested in buying.
Speaker:Yet you have someone might go from a Facebook post that
Speaker:you have over to your website,
Speaker:love what you have there,
Speaker:but just not be in the market to buy yet.
Speaker:Or their child just falls and skins his knee or a
Speaker:husband is intercepting you and saying they need something.
Speaker:Or there's some other disruption you've got to go cook dinner.
Speaker:And if that person leaves your website and doesn't for sure
Speaker:remember what your name was or know how to get back
Speaker:to you,
Speaker:that interested they might've started could be lost forever.
Speaker:But if you have something on your website that can attract
Speaker:them in and entice them to leave their email,
Speaker:then you're able to talk with them further.
Speaker:You're able to remind them of your site and they can
Speaker:then come back and look at you when they're ready to
Speaker:buy craft shows.
Speaker:Same thing.
Speaker:I see this all the time.
Speaker:In fact,
Speaker:I was just at a craft show this past weekend.
Speaker:And very few people take advantage of this.
Speaker:How many people do you interact with?
Speaker:And like,
Speaker:we'll walk past a booth that you have network meetings,
Speaker:the same thing,
Speaker:same type of a concept,
Speaker:but I'm going to stick with craft shows.
Speaker:For my example here,
Speaker:depending on the craft show,
Speaker:it could be hundreds of people.
Speaker:If you were able to collect emails from even only a
Speaker:small percentage of those people,
Speaker:there are people that you can then continue to talk to
Speaker:on a semi-regular basis who might not be ready to buy
Speaker:right? When they saw you at the show,
Speaker:but had a good interaction with you.
Speaker:You were friendly at the booth,
Speaker:they got a chance to see your product.
Speaker:They just didn't hand over their credit card and buy right
Speaker:now, but maybe they're going to be ready in a month
Speaker:or two months.
Speaker:And if you let them walk away from your booth without
Speaker:getting their email again,
Speaker:it's like poof,
Speaker:all of that energy of having the show,
Speaker:the only value is in the people who are actually purchasing
Speaker:at the show where really it can be so much more
Speaker:than that when you collect the emails.
Speaker:And then of course customers,
Speaker:I'm not going to make any assumptions,
Speaker:but hopefully you are collecting emails from people who buy from
Speaker:you because also common thing at craft shows,
Speaker:people just,
Speaker:you know,
Speaker:exchange the money,
Speaker:put a product in the bag,
Speaker:say, thank you so much for the business.
Speaker:Maybe put a card in there,
Speaker:but then you're leaving the onus on that person to call
Speaker:you up.
Speaker:Or if you put a card in your boxes,
Speaker:when you ship things out,
Speaker:all of the potential reconnection is on their end.
Speaker:Not your end.
Speaker:If it,
Speaker:if you get their email,
Speaker:you're able to initiate it.
Speaker:So these are all the reasons why email marketing can be
Speaker:such a huge asset to your business.
Speaker:And when you're not doing this,
Speaker:you are truly 100% leaving dollars on the table.
Speaker:So I don't think I need to drive that point home
Speaker:any further,
Speaker:but now let's get into the big stumbling block that I
Speaker:see, which is how it sounds nice,
Speaker:but that's intimidating.
Speaker:There's a lot of other things you need to do for
Speaker:your business.
Speaker:So here are the steps to take.
Speaker:When you're looking to put an email marketing campaign in place,
Speaker:first thing,
Speaker:pick an email server and don't get stuck here.
Speaker:There are so many available.
Speaker:This doesn't have to be a final decision.
Speaker:I'm going to say,
Speaker:go with a couple of the easier ones,
Speaker:constant contact MailChimp.
Speaker:Maybe we'll get some feedback from people who are here,
Speaker:who are going to be doing the showcases later.
Speaker:And they'll tell you what platforms they're on.
Speaker:If they're willing to share,
Speaker:the point is get started.
Speaker:Don't spend a ton of time researching a million places,
Speaker:pick one and just get started.
Speaker:You can always export your customer list and send it over
Speaker:to another service provider.
Speaker:If at some point you decide you don't want to stay
Speaker:with who you've picked.
Speaker:So the first thing is picking your service provider.
Speaker:I'm going to suggest MailChimp seems to be the one that's
Speaker:the most popular right now,
Speaker:but I have used constant contact in the past also.
Speaker:And they're pretty easy to do.
Speaker:They both have free plans for you to get started with
Speaker:so no excuses there.
Speaker:The one thing you absolutely should not do is try to
Speaker:send emails from like a free Gmail account that you have
Speaker:or a Yahoo account that you have.
Speaker:And the reason is a couple of things.
Speaker:First off,
Speaker:it doesn't have any of the legal things in place for
Speaker:you. Have you seen when you get emails on the bottom,
Speaker:it says,
Speaker:click here.
Speaker:If you want to unsubscribe,
Speaker:that is something legally you need to have when you're sending
Speaker:out emails and these types of services,
Speaker:like I was just talking about with MailChimp and constant contact
Speaker:and any of the other ones that you would use automatically
Speaker:have that in there for you.
Speaker:When you set up your account,
Speaker:it'll automatically be added to the end of the email.
Speaker:So you've got that cover.
Speaker:Another thing about trying to send from like a free email
Speaker:account is if you start sending too many,
Speaker:I think you could maybe send maybe 10 or 20 at
Speaker:a time.
Speaker:If you dare risk it,
Speaker:but you start sending too many and they're going to see
Speaker:exactly what you're doing,
Speaker:knowing that it's illegal and block you.
Speaker:Okay? So you could lose access to your email.
Speaker:So careful,
Speaker:careful don't do that.
Speaker:Just go with the new email service provider.
Speaker:It's better in every single way that I could talk about.
Speaker:And like I said,
Speaker:you can always change later.
Speaker:So that's number one,
Speaker:choose an email provider,
Speaker:sign up for the free account.
Speaker:Now you're ready to go.
Speaker:The next thing is collecting emails.
Speaker:The first thing I do just to get comfortable with the
Speaker:system is add some emails from your friends and family.
Speaker:Now it is true that you need permission from them to
Speaker:add them to your list,
Speaker:but friends and family,
Speaker:aren't going to be yelling and screaming and mark you as
Speaker:spam, right?
Speaker:So you can clearly add them to start getting the system
Speaker:up and running.
Speaker:When you put something on your website that talks about collecting
Speaker:email addresses,
Speaker:it always says there's always an opt-in box.
Speaker:So they're giving you permission just by way of providing you
Speaker:with their address.
Speaker:If you're face-to-face at a craft show,
Speaker:for example,
Speaker:let's say you do a sweepstakes for a free birthday cake.
Speaker:Kim, I'm going to say birthday cake with you.
Speaker:And you're letting people drop their emails in.
Speaker:As long as you say,
Speaker:they're enter into the sweepstakes by doing so.
Speaker:It was allowing me to communicate with you further with promotions
Speaker:and other such.
Speaker:You say something that's a value to them,
Speaker:but you make sure to say that then illegally,
Speaker:you can add them in.
Speaker:Also if they're already a customer,
Speaker:if they've purchased from you,
Speaker:you are already doing a business transaction.
Speaker:So you then can legally use their address also.
Speaker:So all of those things are important in terms of permission.
Speaker:And then like I was just saying,
Speaker:start collecting email addresses everywhere.
Speaker:Is everyone going to be willing to give you an address?
Speaker:No, that's fine.
Speaker:If you collect 30,
Speaker:40 addresses from a craft show,
Speaker:that's 30 or 40 people that you would've never been able
Speaker:to talk to again,
Speaker:if you didn't have email,
Speaker:I mean,
Speaker:there's a lot of people.
Speaker:So think about that at networking meetings.
Speaker:One of the things we started doing at the ribbon print
Speaker:company is when we go out to trade shows,
Speaker:I don't care about the number of email addresses or business
Speaker:cards we get.
Speaker:I care about the quality of the emails or the business
Speaker:cards. So that's another thing like you don't have to just
Speaker:be filling up like an email list of a hundred people
Speaker:is no better than an email list of 50 people.
Speaker:If those 50 people are really qualified,
Speaker:interested candidates,
Speaker:right? So it's not always the number.
Speaker:It's good people signing up.
Speaker:People who stop at your booth at a craft show.
Speaker:Yes, don't put everybody in who went to a chamber meeting
Speaker:of yours.
Speaker:If you think half of them are going to be interested
Speaker:in your product,
Speaker:it's not worth it.
Speaker:You don't need to go through that effort.
Speaker:But if you have any questions on that,
Speaker:I can talk about that again a little bit more at
Speaker:the end,
Speaker:but so you start collecting emails on a website.
Speaker:You often see pop up boxes for 10% off your first
Speaker:order. You know,
Speaker:that type of a thing you can certainly do that.
Speaker:You can also just say,
Speaker:get on my special list.
Speaker:So you're the first to know about whatever or get on
Speaker:my list and you'll have input into the next flavors or
Speaker:the next sense or whatever's going on with your business.
Speaker:The one thing I would suggest you stay away from is
Speaker:saying, join my newsletter.
Speaker:You know,
Speaker:most people are not interested or attracted to that.
Speaker:What's a newsletter.
Speaker:I'm giving you my email.
Speaker:You're going to send me things to buy.
Speaker:Everyone's kind of conditioned to that already.
Speaker:So if you can entice them with,
Speaker:including something else that they're going to get that they're going
Speaker:to be like,
Speaker:yeah, I want to know about that.
Speaker:Then you're more likely to get the email addresses.
Speaker:Okay. So that's step two.
Speaker:Then the third step,
Speaker:which gets to be a little bit more of a sophisticated
Speaker:step, but it's easiest to do when you're just starting is
Speaker:to start tagging emails.
Speaker:And by that,
Speaker:I mean,
Speaker:if they're a customer,
Speaker:add a tag,
Speaker:you learn how to do that.
Speaker:Based on the email service provider you have,
Speaker:but everyone now allows you to make subsets of your master
Speaker:list based on what I'm going to call tat.
Speaker:Some people call them different things.
Speaker:So the easiest and most obvious tag is customers,
Speaker:not customers,
Speaker:right? So you could send an email to somebody and say,
Speaker:thank you so much in the past for your support,
Speaker:wanting to make sure that you were the first to know,
Speaker:blah, blah,
Speaker:blah, blah,
Speaker:blah, blah,
Speaker:blah. If your emails weren't tagged,
Speaker:you don't know who's a past customer and who isn't.
Speaker:Right. So tagging is really great in that way.
Speaker:You could also tag based on people who come to trade
Speaker:shows because you know,
Speaker:then they're local probably right.
Speaker:If you're doing local craft shows.
Speaker:So then you could send emails just to that subset of
Speaker:your list saying,
Speaker:Hey, I'm going to be at SpringHill mall next Saturday,
Speaker:come join me.
Speaker:If you do,
Speaker:and say the word peppermint I'll have something special at the
Speaker:booth for you,
Speaker:things like that.
Speaker:You have fun with them and play with them like that.
Speaker:Okay. So in summary,
Speaker:these three steps in terms of how to get started with
Speaker:your email list is first picking a service provider.
Speaker:Second, starting to add into the emails into that system and
Speaker:then tag them even in the most simplistic way,
Speaker:because all you're trying to do right now is get into
Speaker:the sync and understanding the whole email process.
Speaker:Okay. And you can get fancier later if you want.
Speaker:I want you to get into the process.
Speaker:Okay? So those are the three steps to get started.
Speaker:Then none of this means anything,
Speaker:unless you start sending out emails,
Speaker:right? It doesn't matter how much you have in the back.
Speaker:If you're not using an actually communicating with them.
Speaker:So what I would do here is just decide on and
Speaker:commit to some type of a frequency I would do at
Speaker:the least monthly.
Speaker:I feel like that's a little bit too little,
Speaker:but look,
Speaker:if that's what you can do,
Speaker:and that's what you feel you can commit to get started
Speaker:with that monthly or every other week or weekly.
Speaker:I don't think as smaller brands,
Speaker:like we all are,
Speaker:you need to be doing every day or multiple times a
Speaker:week. I don't know about you guys,
Speaker:but I have some brands that I've been following.
Speaker:And especially since my son just got married,
Speaker:I was purchasing regularly from a couple of them.
Speaker:And they send me stuff like almost every single day,
Speaker:but they're a big brand.
Speaker:They have the power behind them to do that.
Speaker:I'm getting a little irritated.
Speaker:I'm not even opening them anymore.
Speaker:So it's just a little bit too much.
Speaker:And especially a smaller brand.
Speaker:You don't want people to opt out or unsubscribe.
Speaker:So that's what I'm saying weekly over your other week at
Speaker:the very least monthly you should do.
Speaker:So then what do you say in these emails?
Speaker:Okay. That's the next thing I'll tell you the easiest thing
Speaker:to do here.
Speaker:If you have Gmail,
Speaker:you know how they're on the very right side is the
Speaker:promotion folder.
Speaker:Click on that and see what headlines,
Speaker:what subject lines interests you,
Speaker:what prompts you and makes you interested in opening.
Speaker:You can pretty much copy,
Speaker:substitute out some of those subject line words and use those
Speaker:for your emails.
Speaker:You don't have to sit here with a blank piece of
Speaker:paper thinking,
Speaker:oh my gosh,
Speaker:what am I going to say?
Speaker:What am I going to say?
Speaker:Right. It can also give you ideas for content to put
Speaker:in your emails.
Speaker:So I see that as a great wealth of idea prompts
Speaker:for your subject line.
Speaker:And then when you're getting into your email,
Speaker:obviously the content needs to follow whatever you're saying in the
Speaker:subject line.
Speaker:But for the most part,
Speaker:you're looking at obviously a product,
Speaker:you know,
Speaker:you might talk about something that's new,
Speaker:or you might be promoting a special product that relates to
Speaker:an upcoming holiday.
Speaker:Potentially. I love the idea for,
Speaker:again, us as small business owners to give some type of
Speaker:a personal look into the business,
Speaker:whether you show a picture of,
Speaker:Hey, here's what I was working on this week.
Speaker:And you show you pouring soaps or someone delivering the flower
Speaker:part of the cake or a gift basket or whatever it
Speaker:is so that they start to feel like they know you.
Speaker:The big brands have spent millions of dollars in advertising,
Speaker:developing a persona,
Speaker:a theme,
Speaker:you know,
Speaker:the business,
Speaker:et cetera.
Speaker:We're smaller businesses.
Speaker:So the best way that we can do that and get
Speaker:people to feel like they really know us is by sharing
Speaker:a little bit of something personal in the emails.
Speaker:Doesn't have to be long.
Speaker:One of the things,
Speaker:and you'll love this.
Speaker:One of the things we have found recently is people like
Speaker:shorter emails,
Speaker:not longer,
Speaker:which means you don't have to be writing a ton of
Speaker:words. You know,
Speaker:just something little to get your message across couple of photos,
Speaker:especially if you have products links to the product,
Speaker:not just to your overall website,
Speaker:but the specific product that you're looking at are really important.
Speaker:And great idea is if you want to,
Speaker:and you don't necessarily need to do this with every email,
Speaker:but ask your email recipients a question,
Speaker:Hey, if I were to create these scarves in a new
Speaker:color for the fall,
Speaker:which of these three colors,
Speaker:would you resonate with the most?
Speaker:Or which one do you think I should do?
Speaker:Just hit the reply button and let me know which color.
Speaker:And of course you can apply that to all different types
Speaker:of things.
Speaker:When you do this,
Speaker:it does two things.
Speaker:The first thing it does is it makes them feel like
Speaker:a part of your business.
Speaker:They are investing in the business and now,
Speaker:you know,
Speaker:they want to know what color you end up deciding on.
Speaker:Right? But the other thing that that does is when they
Speaker:reply to you,
Speaker:very similar to social media algorithms,
Speaker:when they reply to you on email,
Speaker:your account is going to say,
Speaker:oh, Nicole likes getting emails from that person.
Speaker:But your deliverability of your emails gets better.
Speaker:When people reply to your emails,
Speaker:that's a little behind the scenes hack there.
Speaker:So I'm going to wrap this all up because we want
Speaker:to get into our showcases.
Speaker:In summary.
Speaker:What we're talking about here is email marketing is such a
Speaker:huge asset for you,
Speaker:for your business and can be so powerful for attracting sales.
Speaker:All this work you're already putting in.
Speaker:You add this one other element on top,
Speaker:and it's going to help you grow your sales.
Speaker:You're never too small to start your email list.
Speaker:If you are brand new,
Speaker:if you're listening to the show today and you're just starting
Speaker:that's okay.
Speaker:These email service providers are free.
Speaker:Sign up for one,
Speaker:start putting your friends and family in and start getting into
Speaker:think of doing emails.
Speaker:It's never too early to start.
Speaker:This is also now a perfect time to do this because
Speaker:if you can start collecting,
Speaker:you're rolling into,
Speaker:I can't even believe I'm saying this already,
Speaker:but holiday sales.
Speaker:Yeah. It's only the beginning of the summer while we're talking
Speaker:here, but holiday sales are going to be right around the
Speaker:corner. So if you've been collecting emails for four months or
Speaker:so, you're going to have a group that you can talk
Speaker:to as the holidays roll around.
Speaker:So this can be part of your Ben holiday sales strategy.
Speaker:So in terms of strengthening your business,
Speaker:yes, there are lots of things to do face to face
Speaker:sales of course is always my favorite thing.
Speaker:There's online marketing.
Speaker:Of course you have e-commerce and all of that,
Speaker:but the single biggest thing that you can do to really
Speaker:lay the foundation and strengthen your business as you move forward
Speaker:is starting.
Speaker:If you haven't already,
Speaker:and maybe I will just reignite some of you in terms
Speaker:of your energy,
Speaker:you have all this in place,
Speaker:but you haven't been using it.
Speaker:I know that happens a lot too,
Speaker:but just get that email list in play and start using
Speaker:it because it is a huge asset for you and your
Speaker:business as you go forward.
Speaker:Okay. So that's a line in the sand.
Speaker:That was what I wanted to talk about today.
Speaker:Anybody here want to unmute before we get into showcases and
Speaker:either unmute,
Speaker:if you have a question or if you want to share
Speaker:what email service provider you're using.
Speaker:Okay. Anita,
Speaker:why don't you go ahead.
Speaker:Okay. I have two,
Speaker:one I'm using MailChimp.
Speaker:I must admit I need to use it more,
Speaker:but I do have a question.
Speaker:When you were mentioning that your email list is worth money,
Speaker:how do you put a value on an email list?
Speaker:If you want to sell a business,
Speaker:like when you're down the road and you want to sell
Speaker:a business,
Speaker:how do you put a value on that?
Speaker:Because I'd like to build my email list now so that
Speaker:I know that it's being built properly for what?
Speaker:At the time,
Speaker:when I do want to retire and get rid of my
Speaker:business for selling,
Speaker:I think,
Speaker:and I have never sold a company yet.
Speaker:So I can't for sure tell you,
Speaker:but I,
Speaker:there are some things that I know about this,
Speaker:and this is a great question.
Speaker:The NEDA is first off,
Speaker:you know how on social,
Speaker:you can buy likes and buy followers and you know,
Speaker:all that type of thing.
Speaker:So it doesn't even matter like the social metrics and credibility
Speaker:aren't even necessarily what's really happening or like Twitter.
Speaker:Now, you know how everyone's questioning how many bots are really
Speaker:there versus real people.
Speaker:I think the best thing that you can do is keep
Speaker:the integrity of your email list by not loading it up
Speaker:with people who would never have an interest in your product.
Speaker:And I will tell you an example of when we did
Speaker:this wrong at some of our trade shows,
Speaker:ribbon print,
Speaker:Anita, you might've even been working in the booth with me
Speaker:when we did this for a little while,
Speaker:we let people enter their email address and we did a
Speaker:drawing for a free ribbon printer.
Speaker:So we were giving away a thousand dollar printer for free,
Speaker:you know,
Speaker:in a collection of all those addresses.
Speaker:Now, granted it was a trade show.
Speaker:So it was all business people.
Speaker:But I got to tell you,
Speaker:we went back and tracked none of the winners,
Speaker:except for a couple of the shows were more connected with
Speaker:customers. None of those shows where we gave away those printers.
Speaker:I'm going to say there were three of them ever use
Speaker:their printer.
Speaker:They saw no value in it.
Speaker:What they were doing is going around and they saw,
Speaker:oh, I don't even know what I'm signing up for.
Speaker:I'm going to write my name and put my email address.
Speaker:And I don't know,
Speaker:like I probably won't win.
Speaker:Anyway, there was no real correlation to what they were winning
Speaker:and the value of it.
Speaker:So we stopped doing that once we figured that out.
Speaker:So what I would say is just as you're going through,
Speaker:you know,
Speaker:how you're collecting the email addresses so you can speak to
Speaker:when it gets to the point,
Speaker:when you have someone come in and look at the value
Speaker:of your business.
Speaker:If you're going to go through like a business sales manager,
Speaker:they're going to look at all of your assets.
Speaker:And also in those service providers,
Speaker:I believe it says the dates of when these emails are
Speaker:added in and how active your list is,
Speaker:like, what is your open rate?
Speaker:How many people are reading it.
Speaker:And that's always going to be higher.
Speaker:If the quality of your list is better.
Speaker:So that's how you increase your value.
Speaker:I cannot speak to what the value would be,
Speaker:but I can speak to those things as contributing to the
Speaker:value. And Amy,
Speaker:it looks like you're biting at the bit here to talk.
Speaker:So let me unmute you since you're driving.
Speaker:What do you know about this?
Speaker:Hold on.
Speaker:Okay. It's making me ask you if you want to be
Speaker:un-muted him.
Speaker:I'm seeing that you're running to talk to Amy.
Speaker:See if you can unmute me.
Speaker:Maya. We'll have Kim talk for a second.
Speaker:Amy is now totally frozen.
Speaker:Okay, go ahead,
Speaker:Kim. So I have a question on the kind of legality,
Speaker:I guess you called it of emailing people who haven't signed
Speaker:onto your list.
Speaker:I'm not exaggerating.
Speaker:When I say I answered 12 to 15 new emails every
Speaker:day from inquiries,
Speaker:brides, graduation,
Speaker:cakes, birthday cakes.
Speaker:I mean,
Speaker:every day I turn my,
Speaker:you know,
Speaker:I come in,
Speaker:I answer my emails.
Speaker:Can I have a cake for this cookies for this?
Speaker:Have they,
Speaker:by the nature of them,
Speaker:emailing me already become part of my email list.
Speaker:No, No.
Speaker:Okay. I'm going to mail.
Speaker:Send them someday by MailChimp.
Speaker:I still need to ask them to join my list.
Speaker:I think you can email a single person.
Speaker:Okay. Cause that's just communication.
Speaker:One-to-one when you're getting into these mass emails,
Speaker:that's a regular promotional email.
Speaker:However you can say,
Speaker:and we do this for the ribbon print company.
Speaker:When people ask and inquire about a ribbon printer,
Speaker:we will ask them,
Speaker:would it be all right if we added you to our
Speaker:list and we tell them you're going to get a series
Speaker:of emails that will give you more information about how people
Speaker:are using the printer,
Speaker:different types of things.
Speaker:You can always unsubscribe to them if you want to.
Speaker:But I think find value with being on the list.
Speaker:Is that okay?
Speaker:They say yes.
Speaker:And then Lori goes in and manually add them in.
Speaker:Okay. I have to manually add because I'm not doing any
Speaker:email marketing,
Speaker:So yes,
Speaker:you would add those in or have someone do it for
Speaker:you obviously.
Speaker:And I would tag them inquiries or bridal inquiries or something
Speaker:like that.
Speaker:And then with those,
Speaker:if there's a way you can find the wedding date,
Speaker:because if they are no longer interested after a certain date,
Speaker:you don't want to be communicating with them about wedding cakes
Speaker:anymore, obviously,
Speaker:But they could be regular customers.
Speaker:Sure could.
Speaker:Yeah. That's where it kind of,
Speaker:the strategy comes into play and what you're doing.
Speaker:Okay, Amy,
Speaker:I see that.
Speaker:You're un-muted now.
Speaker:Oh, good.
Speaker:Yes, yes.
Speaker:We can hear you.
Speaker:Okay. So one,
Speaker:yes. I have an email list.
Speaker:I was using MailChimp.
Speaker:I have moved to constant contact.
Speaker:It is much more effective.
Speaker:I have a lower bounce rate with that.
Speaker:Not just a thought to well,
Speaker:I'm part of the reason I may have a lower rate
Speaker:with that is because I've scrubbed the emails.
Speaker:So that may have contributed To you've done the list cleanup.
Speaker:Yeah. We have tags that are either retail or wholesale.
Speaker:That's that's as far as I've gone,
Speaker:as far as detailing it out for my customers,
Speaker:That's good because those are two totally different messages that you
Speaker:would be wanting to send.
Speaker:So that's a great example.
Speaker:And then to Anita's question about how you get evaluation,
Speaker:you want to talk to an attorney who knows about mergers
Speaker:and acquisitions.
Speaker:They're going to have the resources that value and provide future
Speaker:value on that playlist.
Speaker:I wouldn't say any,
Speaker:depending on your business,
Speaker:at least from what my attorneys told me,
Speaker:your email asset may not be as valuable as a physical
Speaker:asset, but it does still have some value.
Speaker:And you're looking for every dollar you can possibly get when
Speaker:you're looking to sell.
Speaker:It also depends on your business because if a lot of
Speaker:your business,
Speaker:like for us,
Speaker:for the ribbon print company is repeat business.
Speaker:So we obviously need that.
Speaker:And it's all,
Speaker:e-commerce pretty much.
Speaker:And so it depends.
Speaker:It's very situational,
Speaker:but that was a good ad.
Speaker:Amy, thank you for that.
Speaker:Any other questions or comments you want to share your email
Speaker:provider? Anika,
Speaker:go ahead.
Speaker:Sure. I started out with MailChimp.
Speaker:Then I use MailChimp for a couple of years and then
Speaker:I switched over to flow desk,
Speaker:which I really prefer.
Speaker:It's really pretty.
Speaker:I'm a very visually oriented person and it's easy to make
Speaker:really attractive,
Speaker:pretty emails.
Speaker:I don't really,
Speaker:I'm not very,
Speaker:science-y about the data of bounce rates and all that stuff.
Speaker:I do tag my list,
Speaker:but I'm kind of inconsistent with it and I don't segment
Speaker:it. I have a welcome series that goes out.
Speaker:And then I just,
Speaker:whenever I send an email,
Speaker:I sent my whole list.
Speaker:I haven't really gotten into segmentation and I tag people like
Speaker:fire local.
Speaker:Like they live like within driving distance of me farmer's market.
Speaker:If that's where they signed up those sorts of tax.
Speaker:But again,
Speaker:I don't really use,
Speaker:I'm not really utilizing them efficiently.
Speaker:Okay. So maybe our conversation here will jumpstart you to do
Speaker:that. Maybe.
Speaker:I mean,
Speaker:you've got it.
Speaker:Like you've got it all there.
Speaker:Ready to go.
Speaker:And you're using it.
Speaker:Some, it sounds like.
Speaker:So like I said,
Speaker:like, at least it's there ready now you just have to
Speaker:take action on it in that way.
Speaker:I'm sending emails.
Speaker:I send about Us not separating Them,
Speaker:right? Yeah.
Speaker:Okay. No,
Speaker:that's great.
Speaker:You're doing a lot more than a lot of people,
Speaker:so that's great.
Speaker:Anyone else want to chime in here before we get to
Speaker:the showcases?
Speaker:Lily? Go ahead.
Speaker:Yeah. Thank you.
Speaker:I do have a question.
Speaker:My husband thinks that yeah,
Speaker:we have to have like a lot of customers in order
Speaker:for us to have an email list,
Speaker:but now I'm listening to you and you say,
Speaker:even if it's really,
Speaker:really small,
Speaker:it doesn't really matter.
Speaker:Would it be okay to have an email list and email
Speaker:them every two months?
Speaker:Every three months?
Speaker:Is that even okay?
Speaker:You could,
Speaker:if that's all you could do,
Speaker:then at least I would do that because at least you're
Speaker:getting the ball moving and you're having some type of frequency.
Speaker:I really would suggest no less than once a month.
Speaker:Have you ever had people show up in your mailbox in
Speaker:your email box?
Speaker:And you're like,
Speaker:all right.
Speaker:I used to do business with you like three years ago.
Speaker:And now all of a sudden you're emailing me.
Speaker:You don't want that happening.
Speaker:And honestly,
Speaker:like I said,
Speaker:if you go into your promotion folder and just look at
Speaker:some of the things that other people are doing and just
Speaker:copy that,
Speaker:it doesn't have to be this long written email and it
Speaker:can be to five people.
Speaker:It's just a matter of getting going.
Speaker:And there's so much money in an email list.
Speaker:It's almost a sin not to do it because you're just
Speaker:leaving money on the table.
Speaker:All Right.
Speaker:Thank you.
Speaker:You're welcome.
Speaker:Joyce, were you going to say something or where you just
Speaker:moving around?
Speaker:I want to say something,
Speaker:but I was moving around too.
Speaker:Oh, Okay.
Speaker:Good. I have chip mail and I have not added anybody's
Speaker:manually. Anybody's email address.
Speaker:People have been coming on with my pop-up window on my
Speaker:website and saying I'm up for it.
Speaker:And I'm trying to think I'm bad about email marketing.
Speaker:I really am.
Speaker:And I'm trying to do better.
Speaker:However, I'm trying to figure out how long should I keep
Speaker:them on my email list.
Speaker:If they're not opening the email,
Speaker:even though I'm not paying for it.
Speaker:Cause they don't have that many people on,
Speaker:I'm not paying for it,
Speaker:but how long should I keep them on the email list?
Speaker:And I say,
Speaker:they sign up for themselves.
Speaker:I haven't signed up anybody who signed up on their own.
Speaker:And that's one good thing of buy-sell.
Speaker:If they decide to unsubscribe,
Speaker:it's not going to come back on me because if they
Speaker:ever checked,
Speaker:you saw that they were on their own assigned for it.
Speaker:But I'm just trying to figure out,
Speaker:should I look at that on a,
Speaker:when I started doing more regularly,
Speaker:should I look at it on a,
Speaker:on a quarterly basis?
Speaker:And if they're not opening the email,
Speaker:get rid of them.
Speaker:We do every six months,
Speaker:but quarterly to six months,
Speaker:all of that is good because one of the things to
Speaker:think about also with email marketing is deliverability and especially we're
Speaker:finding yeah.
Speaker:Who accounts sometimes never are received.
Speaker:So it's one thing you have the email address and let's
Speaker:say you email out to 10 people.
Speaker:Okay? Not all your emails will land in that primary folder.
Speaker:Some of them are going to land in Gmail,
Speaker:promotion folders.
Speaker:In the case of Yahoo.
Speaker:Sometimes they're going to never like you don't know where they
Speaker:go or some are undeliverable in total.
Speaker:Like someone entered in a transposed number.
Speaker:So it's not even a real address,
Speaker:you know,
Speaker:what's bouncing.
Speaker:So you want to get rid of all of those.
Speaker:And so I say,
Speaker:as on a six month basis,
Speaker:I would do your delivery.
Speaker:So there's also such a thing as an email reputation and
Speaker:you get this reputation by the service provider you use and
Speaker:the quality of your list and the higher your reputation as
Speaker:with anything the higher,
Speaker:the deliverability will be.
Speaker:In other words,
Speaker:the emails landing in a primary box,
Speaker:things like that.
Speaker:So all of that is also based on how clean your
Speaker:list is.
Speaker:So that was an excellent question.
Speaker:Joyce, I'm going to say six months,
Speaker:if you wanted to do four,
Speaker:that's fine.
Speaker:And for awhile,
Speaker:for me,
Speaker:it was like,
Speaker:I don't want anybody to be gone from my list.
Speaker:Like no,
Speaker:you know,
Speaker:but, and so to get over that,
Speaker:and of course Lori was at me like,
Speaker:no we're getting rid of these people.
Speaker:But what I ended up doing is just downloading the list
Speaker:that I deleted and keeping them on the side.
Speaker:Thank you.
Speaker:Cause it made me more peaceful.
Speaker:I'm like,
Speaker:okay, they're not in the list anymore,
Speaker:but I still have their emails.
Speaker:I didn't know what I would do with them.
Speaker:I mean,
Speaker:they didn't opt out,
Speaker:but I pulled them out of the list.
Speaker:So I didn't even know,
Speaker:but that made me feel better about deleting them.
Speaker:And now I'm like a banty I go chip chop anywhere.
Speaker:Cause I like seeing my open rates get better and deliver.
Speaker:I don't have a lot of bounce rates.
Speaker:I don't have a high bounce rate is very,
Speaker:very low.
Speaker:So I'm going to assume that it is going into their
Speaker:email box or It could be going into their promotion folder
Speaker:and the promotion Or what have you and stuff like that.
Speaker:So I'm going to kind of test the metric for the
Speaker:next couple of months here.
Speaker:And once I started doing email marketing,
Speaker:I just find the categories.
Speaker:I have a free version of check mail and I just
Speaker:cannot find the kind of hard that I really can't go.
Speaker:I'm going to camp and create a email newsletter.
Speaker:What have you,
Speaker:but I can't put any links in it And I'm not
Speaker:sure about,
Speaker:we can look into that as we keep working together.
Speaker:I've tried it when I was really looking into it about
Speaker:maybe four or five months ago,
Speaker:you get a nice email and what have you.
Speaker:But I could not put the links in that.
Speaker:And then like I say was Tamba you can transfer it
Speaker:over, but buildings are not there.
Speaker:So I don't know.
Speaker:And I was reading that you can't do that with me
Speaker:up, I guess on the free version.
Speaker:I don't know if it's on the album.
Speaker:So I mentioned We're able to then on the upgrade,
Speaker:you might be able to do that with MailChimp.
Speaker:Yeah. Annika,
Speaker:where you going to say something?
Speaker:Yeah. First when I had MailChimp,
Speaker:I always put links in my emails and I had the
Speaker:free version of MailChimp also.
Speaker:Yeah. All my emails had links in them.
Speaker:Were you doing them through Canva?
Speaker:Were you making them in Canberra?
Speaker:Yes. I know I can do it with chip mail,
Speaker:but through CAMBA,
Speaker:CAMBA has so many beautiful templates.
Speaker:That's why I kind like to do do with them.
Speaker:I may look into another email marketing.
Speaker:We can talk about that later.
Speaker:I don't want to take all the time in the podcast
Speaker:right now to do that,
Speaker:but we can be looking at that.
Speaker:I actually had another quick question too.
Speaker:When you're cleaning your list,
Speaker:do you send me like a goodbye email out to people
Speaker:before you remove them?
Speaker:Like, Yeah.
Speaker:I mean,
Speaker:if you haven't cleaned it ever before,
Speaker:you can say,
Speaker:Hey, just want to make sure you still want to receive
Speaker:email from me.
Speaker:If you do,
Speaker:please respond with a yes or high or whatever,
Speaker:then you'll have them.
Speaker:Then they'll get off of the unopens there'll be in the
Speaker:opens and responded.
Speaker:And if not,
Speaker:then you let them go.
Speaker:Remember they can always sign up again.
Speaker:Like you haven't lost them forever.
Speaker:If they really do want to see you.
Speaker:All right,
Speaker:let's go ahead now and move into showcases.
Speaker:I hope no one else has a major pressing question.
Speaker:If you do,
Speaker:we can talk about it later also if you'd like,
Speaker:but let's go ahead and do the showcases.
Speaker:So first off for those of you who are here,
Speaker:what we're going to do is I'm going to just choose
Speaker:you randomly.
Speaker:And what I'd like you to do is tell me who
Speaker:you are,
Speaker:your business,
Speaker:and then what you sell.
Speaker:Okay. If it's not immediately apparent then any special promotion that
Speaker:you have going on,
Speaker:or if you're going to be at a local show or
Speaker:you're looking for someone to collaborate with any of that.
Speaker:But just one thing,
Speaker:because we're finding that it's easier and clearer for all of
Speaker:us to take your information.
Speaker:If it's one thing and then one place to find you,
Speaker:whether you want to send us to your website or a
Speaker:Facebook page or wherever one place online to go,
Speaker:okay. Now,
Speaker:for those of you who are listening to the showcase,
Speaker:I want you to listen to everybody.
Speaker:Who's here talking about their businesses because you obviously can support
Speaker:them if you'd like to,
Speaker:that would be fabulous.
Speaker:But also there's other things that you can get out of
Speaker:this. How are other people talking about their business or marketing
Speaker:their business,
Speaker:or what are they doing to get customer?
Speaker:All of these things are things that you can look at
Speaker:and learn from others too.
Speaker:There may be one word.
Speaker:Somebody says not even related to the same thing that you
Speaker:sell, but that inspires you to do something different.
Speaker:So this is also a learning exercise,
Speaker:as well as supporting and getting the word out with all
Speaker:of these fabulous businesses at the end,
Speaker:before we sign off,
Speaker:I will also let you know how you could join in
Speaker:on one of the gift biz bashes,
Speaker:if you would like to as well so that you could
Speaker:do a showcase for yourself with that.
Speaker:Let's go ahead and Anita,
Speaker:I'm going to let you kick it off,
Speaker:go ahead and unmute yourself and tell us everything.
