PaxWest 2023 - Day 2 Impressions and Awards 2023

In This Episode, Sebastion will go over the best games he played on Day 2 of PaxWest! He is also going to give his Day Two MVP!

Here is an Excerpt from Sebastion's article on the ProNerdReport.com: "I had quite the experience on my 2nd day of Pax West 2023. So for those who don’t know, Pax West is a gaming convention in Seattle Washington. It features a variety of games from the recently released and also upcoming gems to keep your eyes on. You can go around playing the demos for the different games to get a feel for them and hopefully find something to look forward to. As a member of the media, I was invited to try out the games and get an interview with reps from the studio. This was a cool experience both on the networking side and getting to play these wonderful games. Many I had no idea even existed.

On the first day, I played some AAA games like Tekken 8, Prince of Persia, and Persona 5 Tactica. Really Enjoyed these games and look forward to playing more of them when they drop.

I got to play some more Indies, many of which blew me away and left me salivating for more. All that said, here is my Day 2 Pax West Impressions and the Day Two MVP."

Sebastion:

What's up and welcome to the single player experience.

2

:

The only podcast that has

a power level over 9, 000.

3

:

In a recent episode of the single player

experience podcast, I talked about the

4

:

best games that I played on my first

day at PAX and I gave my day one awards.

5

:

We talked about indies like 30XX,

Chicken Police, and Los Idolos.

6

:

We also talked about the AAA

games that I played like Tekken 8

7

:

what?

8

:

, Sebastion: Prince of Persia,

9

:

what?

10

:

Sebastion: Persona 5 Tactica,

11

:

what?

12

:

Sebastion: Super Mario Brothers Wonder.

13

:

what?

14

:

Sebastion: And, Grand Blue Fantasy Relink.

15

:

what?

16

:

Sebastion: Now, before we close that

episode, I gave my Day 1 MVP award.

17

:

In this episode, I'm gonna

do the same thing with the

18

:

games that I played on Day 2.

19

:

And, I'm gonna tell you about one

of my experiences that I had at PAX.

20

:

So, without further ado, let's get to it.

21

:

so, the first award of the day

is my most unique game award.

22

:

This is pretty self explanatory, it's

going to the most unique game that

23

:

I saw during day one of PAX West.

24

:

So, the winner of this award has to go

to one of the most unique games that

25

:

I've ever seen in my entire life, and

that's Chicken Police Into the Hive.

26

:

Now, before I talk about the Day 2

games, I want to tell you about something

27

:

that I experienced, a little story that

happened while I was playing Tekken 8.

28

:

It all started with me playing a

couple of rounds against the computer.

29

:

The convention hall was a bit empty

this early in the AM, so it was only

30

:

a few of us at different stations.

31

:

Anyways, playing the game was a bit of

a learning curve for me, or should I

32

:

say a reintroduction because I hadn't

played Tekken in a very long time.

33

:

The last time I can remember playing

Tekken was around the days Nelly

34

:

dropped Rai with me and back when

Toonami had must see TV after

35

:

school with Dragon Ball, Dragon

Ball Z, and of course Yu Yu Hakusho.

36

:

Anyways, it took me a couple rounds

but I felt like I was starting to

37

:

get the hang of the controls and

how to do the most basic combos.

38

:

Shortly afterwards, a guy walks up to the

station and asks if I wanted to run one.

39

:

I was a bit nervous to play against

someone considering that I'm

40

:

basically a scrub at the game, but

my ego wouldn't let me back down.

41

:

I looked around and saw that a

crowd of people were starting to

42

:

show up to check out the game.

43

:

The GME did not want to look bad in

front of these people, who probably

44

:

were clearly in their own world, minding

their own business, but that's not the

45

:

narrative that was in my head though.

46

:

So, the guy and I played around,

and wouldn't you know it, He

47

:

was more trash than I was.

48

:

So, I beat him down quickly.

49

:

Then, another guy comes up

to me and says, I got next.

50

:

Again, I was worried because I couldn't

look like a coward in front of all

51

:

these people in line to play the game.

52

:

Keep in mind though, keep this

in mind everybody, they probably

53

:

weren't paying any attention to me.

54

:

These are all things that were going on

in my head, just narratives I made up.

55

:

So the second guy was a tougher

fight, but I narrowly beat him.

56

:

Instead of leaving just like the

first guy did though, he looked at me,

57

:

dead ass in my eyes, and said, I got

somebody for you, right, right here.

58

:

The second guy goes to his

friends in line and points me out.

59

:

I came front with you, now I'm

really low key nervous for real.

60

:

Growing up when somebody said, I got

somebody or something for you, it

61

:

usually was an indicator that they

were coming back with something or

62

:

someone that was gonna beat yo ass.

63

:

One of his friends that was wearing a

DX shirt, who happened to be next in

64

:

line, came up to me, skipping several

empty stations in the process by the

65

:

way, and said, you ain't getting me

like you got my friend over there.

66

:

With that said, we picked our characters.

67

:

I picked Law, and he picked Paul.

68

:

We got into it.

69

:

He absolutely mowed me down

in the first round in seconds.

70

:

Now, round 2 started.

71

:

I barely managed to pull it out.

72

:

Round 3.

73

:

It was kind of a back and forth affair.

74

:

All the way until he got me down to

about 1 fourth of my health remaining.

75

:

Then I panicked.

76

:

I ain't gonna lie.

77

:

I panicked and I spammed a move over

and over again until I got that dub.

78

:

Yes, I know, that's like the worst

way to win in fighting games.

79

:

But, I don't know, I ain't, I

ain't a fighting game person, man.

80

:

I ain't played Tekken in a long time.

81

:

I don't play nothing but Smash

Brothers, and that's occasionally.

82

:

So, you know, I panicked, man.

83

:

I panicked.

84

:

But anyways, with all that panic, though,

my confidence was now through the roof.

85

:

I done beat several opponents.

86

:

So, anyways, the latest victim looked

at me and said, We got one more guy

87

:

for you, and I bet you can't beat him.

88

:

I looked at him, my channel in that

inner 90s kid in me, and that inner

89

:

voice in me that I like to call my great

one voice, and I asked, What is the

90

:

name of the guy you think can best me?

91

:

He started saying, His name is

Rick, and I cut him off midway

92

:

through in my rocky voice and said,

93

:

Sebastion: It doesn't

matter what your name is.

94

:

And then, for some reason, I

blinked out and thought I was The

95

:

Rock and gave a really rock like

promo, and basically said this.

96

:

What y'all don't realize is that

y'all are essentially bowling pins.

97

:

Y'all are getting stacked up just

for me to come and lay the smackdown

98

:

and knock each one of you down.

99

:

First jabroni came before y'all got here.

100

:

Got knocked down.

101

:

The end.

102

:

You and your posse came over

here strutting like Shane O'Mac

103

:

in the Mean Street Posse and one

by one, y'all got knocked down.

104

:

And now, you come before me saying that

there's a challenger that you prophesize

105

:

can go one on one with the great one.

106

:

Sounds to me like you lost your

mind, but let me humor you, point

107

:

out this so called chosen one.

108

:

And then the guy smiled really hard

and pointed at a guy who was really

109

:

lowkey, like a teched cosplay player.

110

:

I think that he was

dressed up as a character.

111

:

Gian.

112

:

I don't know.

113

:

I ain't played ticket

in a long time anyways.

114

:

Oh dude, look like he

was a pro at ticketing.

115

:

If you cosplay as a character in a

video game, I'm just automatically gonna

116

:

assume you a pro at that video game.

117

:

I, you know, maybe you

trash, maybe you ain't.

118

:

I'm automatically gonna assume that's,

that's you, and I don't want that smoke.

119

:

Anyways.

120

:

So I saw a boy dressed as a Tekken

character, and my overconfidence quickly

121

:

melted away just as fast as it came.

122

:

And I said, nah man, I'm good.

123

:

I'm good.

124

:

I don't really want the smoke.

125

:

Next thing you know, the group

and I were laughing, talking

126

:

about my Rock Like promo.

127

:

By the way, as you could tell by the

DX shirt, they were all wrestling

128

:

fans as well, and we were chopping

it up about Tekken for a bit.

129

:

I bring this story up because I

thought you as the audience would

130

:

enjoy it, and to say that if you ever

have an opportunity to attend PAX

131

:

or another convention like it, then

you should definitely check it out.

132

:

You see some cool stuff, meet some

people, and hopefully have a good time.

133

:

I always seem to do all the above.

134

:

Sebastion: Okay, so, story time

out of the way, let's get to our

135

:

Day 2 Impressions and Awards.

136

:

The first game I want to talk

about is the recipient of my Most

137

:

Unique Game Award, and that is

Ebenezer and the Invisible World.

138

:

It's a game by Orbit Studios.

139

:

Okay, so here's my impression

after going hands on with the game.

140

:

Ebenezer in the Invisible World is a

cool video game with a unique concept.

141

:

The game is colorful, it's action

filled, it's a metroidvania that has

142

:

really tight platforming elements.

143

:

The game and the combat is

surprisingly layered and fun.

144

:

There is plenty of weapons that you

can unlock, the platforming is precise

145

:

with a little bit of a challenging

bite to it, the environment has some

146

:

ghost and Halloween elements, and

of course, many Christmas themes.

147

:

Amnesia and the Invisible World seems

like a cool addition to the sparse

148

:

library of Christmas video games.

149

:

I only got to play about a half hour of

the game, but it was enough to make me

150

:

want to play more and look forward to

this game coming out this holiday season.

151

:

Now let's pivot and talk about

some other cool games that I

152

:

checked out at PAX West Day 2.

153

:

The first one that I wanted to

talk about is First Dwarf, and here

154

:

is their description of the game.

155

:

First Dwarf is an immersive action

RPG with base building elements, which

156

:

will test your survival and exploration

skills in a fantasy open world,

157

:

sprawling on islands floating in the sky.

158

:

I liked, I liked the swagger of like,

the team behind it because like, the

159

:

project lead came up to me during our

press interview and he was just like,

160

:

Hey, before you even play this game,

know that we were doing the Islands in

161

:

the Sky before Tears of the Kingdom,

and he laughed it off, he was just

162

:

like, you know, it was one of those

things to where we kind of laughed

163

:

about it a little bit, but I like

that, I like the moxie on the guy.

164

:

Anyways, let's talk about the game though.

165

:

Here's my impressions after the demo.

166

:

First Dwarf is a cool mixture

of a lot of different genres.

167

:

It has some city building elements to it.

168

:

It has some narrative beats.

169

:

It has some combat.

170

:

You go around mining materials,

constructing buildings for different

171

:

purposes, and destroying enemy nests.

172

:

I'll be real with you, combat

was probably the weakest point

173

:

in the game for me personally.

174

:

Instead of just spamming the attack

button, you have to attack within

175

:

a very specific timed window.

176

:

Kind of like the rhythm based thing

in Hi Fi Rush except like the window

177

:

is more like a Small bar as opposed

to you trying to hit on beat but very

178

:

similar kind of timing mechanic there

overall though Despite the fact that

179

:

the combat may be one for me personally

I walked away thinking that I could

180

:

drain a lot of hours playing first

dwarf especially with the construction

181

:

and the building mechanics in this

game Next, I want to talk about Atari.

182

:

Yes, that's right, the company

from back in the day, Atari.

183

:

And I'm not just gonna talk about

a specific game they're doing.

184

:

This is more of a roundup.

185

:

I want to give a special shoutout to

Atari because I spoke with some of the

186

:

leads from the company and their new

direction not only impressed me, but made

187

:

me hopeful about Atari's comeback into

the mainstream popularity of video games.

188

:

So, they are putting out new

versions of their classic

189

:

console, the Atari 2600 Plus.

190

:

Here are some of the

features of the new console.

191

:

The Atari 2,600 plus is an updated

version of the classic Atari 2,600.

192

:

It has been enhanced

in the following ways.

193

:

It plays both Atari's 20

607,800 game cartridges.

194

:

It has H D M I output, which makes

it easy to connect to probably

195

:

all the TVs on the market today.

196

:

It has wide screen mode.

197

:

Enlarged cartridges, um, sockets

which reduce the sticking of the

198

:

games when you pull them in and out.

199

:

It also has the Atari logo that

lights up while it's being played.

200

:

The system comes with the CX40 Plus

Joystick, which has been lovingly

201

:

recreated to the same specifications

as the original, and it also has a 10

202

:

in 1 game cartridge featuring some of

Atari's most famous games, like Adventure,

203

:

Combat, Dodgem, Haunted House, Maze Craze,

Missile Command, Real Sports, Volleyball,

204

:

Surround, Video Pinball, and Yars Revenge.

205

:

Atari is also giving some indie

studios some of their IPs, some

206

:

of their classic IPs to remake.

207

:

I'm loving this new

direction of the company.

208

:

Absolutely loving it.

209

:

They're giving some upstart like indie

studios a fresh start and a chance to put

210

:

their spank and spunk on classic games.

211

:

They're also bringing in

retro consoles that can play.

212

:

These modern day interpretation of these

games and some of the classic cartridges.

213

:

I love that.

214

:

I absolutely love it.

215

:

It's the best of both worlds.

216

:

And it's insanely nice to see this

historical company making a comeback.

217

:

Now I want to talk about the MVP of

day two last, but not least the big

218

:

daddy award, the MVP of the day,

and that MVP award has to go to the

219

:

most addictive game that I played.

220

:

All day of PAX Day 2 and that's

Zombie Rollers The Last Ship.

221

:

This is a game that was made by Zing

Studios, a studio hounded by Ding Yi.

222

:

With their latest game, they came

up with something that I've never

223

:

seen before in a video game.

224

:

Here's their description of this one.

225

:

Take command of the last ship in

a zombie field world and defend

226

:

against endless waves of the undead.

227

:

Build Terence.

228

:

Lead your crew and upgrade

your ship while gathering.

229

:

Loot in this exciting tower.

230

:

Defense on wheels.

231

:

Zombie survival.

232

:

Roguelike game, the fate of humanity.

233

:

Rest in your hands.

234

:

So that was their impre that was

their description of this game.

235

:

Now, let's focus on my impression of it.

236

:

I want to say that I never thought

I'd play a roguelike zombie game where

237

:

you play as a tower defense on wheels.

238

:

That is absolutely creative.

239

:

I've seen zombie games left

and right over the years and so

240

:

many different interpretations.

241

:

You've seen games like Dead Island.

242

:

You've seen games, um, very

similar to like The Last of Us.

243

:

You've seen other games, all sorts of

different games in the zombie genre.

244

:

It's, it's kind of an oversaturated

genre, if I'm being honest, but I've

245

:

never seen a roguelike zombie game where

you play as a tower defense on wheels.

246

:

That's a really cool,

interesting spin on this.

247

:

After playing the game for an

extended period of time, I can

248

:

say definitively that I did not

want to put the control down.

249

:

I absolutely am salivating to

experience more of this game.

250

:

You go around rolling in a mech

slash tank like, um, vehicle, and you

251

:

take down as many zombies as you can

before they take down your vehicle.

252

:

You have assigned crew members that

all have, like, their own roles

253

:

within your, like, tower defense car,

and they all play different parts.

254

:

And they also have their own life,

like, life bars, so you're trying to

255

:

keep them alive as long as possible.

256

:

possible as well as your whole vehicle

in each run you're going to earn loot and

257

:

with that loot you can use that for like

updated weapons and getting your crew

258

:

stronger so that you can go on longer and

longer runs you know if you've listened to

259

:

this podcast before i am a absolute sucker

for a good roguelike game and this one

260

:

has the makings of a must play absolutely

must play entry into the roguelike genre

261

:

So, those are some of the games that

I played during PAX West Day 2, and I

262

:

gotta say, I absolutely loved each, each

and every one of these games, you should

263

:

definitely go wishlist them, check them

out, you know, see if they're for you,

264

:

because like, I loved my time with each

and every one of them, shoutout to all

265

:

these creators and everything doing

their thing at PAX West, they absolutely

266

:

killed it, each one of them had passion,

and brought something different to the

267

:

table, loved it, absolutely loved it.

268

:

Let me know what you think of each one

of these games in the single player

269

:

experience discord, or you can just

tell me in the review of this episode.

270

:

Anyways, I've been Sebastian,

and let's kick it to the outro.

271

:

Peace out, y'all.

272

:

So that's a wrap for today's show.

273

:

I wanna let you know about the single
