We live in a culture that focuses powerfully upon consumption and accumulation. It seems that the goal of life is to get as much 'stuff' as possible. It can mean money to some people, power to others and fame to someone else. The truth about our lives is that we take nothing with us when we go and that a few years after our lives on this earth draw to a close most of us will not be remembered. This does not have to be a depressing or sad thought. It helps us realise that there are other things that might be much more important. In today's message we hear from the greatest leader of the Athenian city state, Pericles. He reminds us that it is not a case of accumulating monuments to our greatness that matters, but rather our impact upon those closest to us.
