Speaker:

Welcome to This Daring Adventure podcast

where we work on bridging the gap between

2

:

where we are and where we want to be in

order to live a bigger and bolder life.

3

:

In this podcast, we will provide

inspiration, tips, and skills

4

:

you need to make your life the

adventure you want it to be.

5

:

Here's your host, mindset

mentor, and life coach, Tri

6

:

Trista: Hey everybody.

7

:

Welcome back.

8

:

So I wanna report because you need

to keep up with the weather here

9

:

because I can barely keep up with it.

10

:

It has been snowing and we've had

lightning and thunder at the same time,

11

:

which I've never experienced before,

and now it's just cold and raining.

12

:

With a slight dusting of snow

on the ground, so there you go.

13

:

All right.

14

:

It's okay getting through it.

15

:

The worst is over, right?

16

:

Except for the people up

north, north of Toronto.

17

:

I'm so sorry.

18

:

You're still getting it.

19

:

Okay.

20

:

So a couple of announcements

before we start.

21

:

I am doing a Momentum Masterclass next

week, April 9th at 7:00 PM Eastern Time.

22

:

I'm gonna to be giving you a

framework to decide what you want

23

:

and how I can help you move forward.

24

:

It's an hour masterclass.

25

:

It will give you some great

actionable tips to help moving

26

:

yourself forward if you especially

don't know what it is you want.

27

:

I will be sharing a framework as

to how you can figure that out.

28

:

Then I am also starting a brand

new limited series podcast.

29

:

called Becoming You and it's going

to be a discussion about future You.

30

:

It's one of my pillars

of my work future You.

31

:

Looking at who you want to

become, what you want to create.

32

:

And so these are really fun

conversations and I'm looking for

33

:

people to guest on this podcast.

34

:

We'll do 15, 20 minute sessions,

book 30 minute calls to go over.

35

:

I'll ask you four questions, maybe

Max, and it'll be a lot of fun.

36

:

I am doing my first ones this week.

37

:

I'm hoping to record a number of

them before I start to release them.

38

:

It will be a limited series, so I might

just do 30 of these and then end it.

39

:

But I think they could be really

interesting and I think listening to

40

:

those will be helpful, having this

discussion, answering these questions,

41

:

giving it some thought, saying it

out loud is really powerful work.

42

:

So if you're interested

43

:

there will be a link in the show notes.

44

:

Please consider signing up.

45

:

It's helpful for me, it's helpful

for you, it's helpful for listeners,

46

:

and it'll be a lot of fun and I

would really appreciate your help.

47

:

So keep that in mind.

48

:

Think about it.

49

:

Alright, now, today I wanted to

talk about constraint, and this is

50

:

constraint around setting goals.

51

:

And it's one of the most underrated

and completely life-changing

52

:

concepts that I teach my clients.

53

:

If you've been feeling overwhelmed,

scattered, or like you're spinning

54

:

your wheels but not getting

the results that you want, then

55

:

this is the episode for you.

56

:

Because it will change everything.

57

:

I want to break down why having one big

goal is really the key to success and

58

:

why constraint is essential to making

it happen, and why having a compelling

59

:

reason behind that goal is what will

keep you moving forward when things get

60

:

hard and you know they will get hard.

61

:

So get ready.

62

:

Let's dive in.

63

:

let's start with the

purpose of a big goal.

64

:

One of the biggest mistakes I

see people make is trying to

65

:

do too many things at once.

66

:

They have all these dreams, lots of

ideas, And they spread themselves

67

:

so thin that they don't make

real progress on any of them.

68

:

Now, is this sounding familiar because

here's what I tell my clients, you need

69

:

one big goal, not 10, not five, just one.

70

:

I have one big goal.

71

:

My clients all have one big goal.

72

:

Now, why is this important?

73

:

Because when you choose one goal, you

create clarity, and clarity is one of

74

:

the key results we work on achieving

75

:

in my coaching.

76

:

you wanna eliminate confusion.

77

:

You want to eliminate scattering your

attention around not being focused.

78

:

You want to know exactly where

to focus your energy, and that

79

:

focus is what creates momentum.

80

:

It's really important that a

big goal should challenge you.

81

:

It should require you to become

a different version of yourself.

82

:

It should be something that if you

achieve it, you'll look back and

83

:

think, wow, I can't believe I did that.

84

:

And that's the power of a big goal.

85

:

It forces growth and that's what we want.

86

:

It demands transformation, and if

you don't pick one, you miss out on

87

:

that level of personal evolution.

88

:

This is the whole point of

setting a goal, is the growth that

89

:

comes with it in going after it.

90

:

Now, I know you might be thinking: But I

have three big goals and how do I choose?

91

:

But it doesn't matter really,

which one you start with.

92

:

Let's just assume you're gonna go

after all three of them at some point.

93

:

But if you have multiple goals,

just pick one and commit to it.

94

:

The other goals will still be there

and you can tackle them later.

95

:

There's no right answer here.

96

:

Just pick one and let's go with it.

97

:

But by choosing one now, you give yourself

the best chance at success instead of

98

:

spreading yourself too thin or making

slow, or no progress on all of them.

99

:

So there is no right answer.

100

:

Just decide and go.

101

:

Now I wanted to talk about

constraint because constraint

102

:

is going to be your superpower.

103

:

Constraint means making a

decision and sticking to it.

104

:

It means saying no to distractions,

to other projects, to shiny new ideas.

105

:

It means committing to your big goal

with total discipline and focus.

106

:

And I have to say this is really what

I've done for myself in going after my.

107

:

I have been almost wholly focused

on this business goal for this year.

108

:

It's not ideal sometimes, but I have

said no to a lot of things and my

109

:

evenings and my weekends in particular,

I am working on my goal instead.

110

:

Or doing things that help me, take care of

myself, getting rest, making sure that I

111

:

am able to continue to go after my goal,

and that I'm not draining my energy.

112

:

And most people don't like constraint.

113

:

It feels limiting, and it might feel like

you're missing out, but let me tell you

114

:

that constraint is the path to freedom.

115

:

I.

116

:

And when you practice constraint,

you eliminate decision fatigue.

117

:

You don't waste energy wondering

what to focus on or if you

118

:

should be doing something else.

119

:

You just do the thing and that's what

creates massive results for yourself.

120

:

In my private coaching, I do tell my

students to pick one thing, to blow

121

:

their minds or to pick something

that is an impossible goal for them.

122

:

Something really big.

123

:

One thing, and that's hard

because their brains wanna chase

124

:

after multiple things at once.

125

:

we do this, but the ones who really

embrace constraint are the ones

126

:

who make the biggest breakthroughs.

127

:

So think about your one thing.

128

:

What's the thing you're going to

commit to fully no matter what?

129

:

Now, this next part is really

critical because once you pick your

130

:

big goal and commit to constraint,

your brain is going to freak out.

131

:

It's gonna tell you it's too hard.

132

:

That you should quit, that you

should pick something easier that

133

:

you don't have what it takes.

134

:

It will come up with a dozen more excuses.

135

:

And this is why you need

a compelling reason.

136

:

A compelling reason is

the fuel behind your goal.

137

:

It will be the thing that will keep you

going when you don't feel like showing up.

138

:

It's the reason you're willing to do all

the hard things and your compelling reason

139

:

has to be stronger than your excuses.

140

:

Let's say your goal is to lose 50 pounds.

141

:

If your reason is I wanna look good

in a dress, that's nice, but it's

142

:

not really strong enough because the

moment you're tired and the moment

143

:

you don't feel like working out,

that reason's not gonna hold up.

144

:

But if your reason is, I wanna be healthy

to be around my grandkids, I wanna

145

:

break generational health patterns, I

want to live a long and healthy life.

146

:

I wanna show myself that I'm capable

of transformation, then we're talking.

147

:

That reason will pull you forward

when things get tough, and your job

148

:

is to find that compelling reason.

149

:

Really spend some time thinking about it.

150

:

Make it deep, make it emotional.

151

:

Make it something that truly matters

to you, and then write it down.

152

:

Write it down every day or somewhere

that you will see it every day.

153

:

Remind yourself of it constantly.

154

:

Put it on a sticky note.

155

:

Write it on the front page of your

journal, put it on your phone.

156

:

Don't lose sight of this.

157

:

Remind yourself constantly.

158

:

Now, let's talk about the urge to quit

because this will come up and I want you

159

:

to know that quitting slows you down.

160

:

I.

161

:

More than failure ever will, because

when you quit, you're not just stopping

162

:

progress on your goal, you're also

training your brain that quitting is

163

:

an option, and when quitting is an

option, your brain will default to it.

164

:

Anytime things get tough,

it gets into this pattern.

165

:

It gets into this habit.

166

:

Quitting means you have to start over.

167

:

It means you have to waste all the

effort that you've already put in

168

:

and it will rob yourself of the

chance to figure out how to succeed.

169

:

Failure on the other

hand, is just feedback.

170

:

It just means things didn't

go as you thought they would.

171

:

It's information, it's data.

172

:

It teaches you what doesn't work,

so you can adjust and keep going.

173

:

So when you feel like

quitting, here's what you do.

174

:

Remember your compelling reason.

175

:

Bring it back to the front of your mind.

176

:

Keep it front and center.

177

:

Why did you choose this

goal in the first place?

178

:

Why is it important to you?

179

:

Why does it matter?

180

:

Second normalise discomfort.

181

:

Discomfort's always going to be

there, and your brain will try and

182

:

convince you that something has gone

wrong, but I promise you it hasn't.

183

:

Discomfort is a part of the process.

184

:

Expect it.

185

:

Allow it to be there and keep going.

186

:

And then third, you want

to commit ahead of time.

187

:

Decide right now that

quitting is not an option.

188

:

No matter how hard it gets.

189

:

Promise yourself, you're gonna keep going.

190

:

When you commit to constraint and

refuse to quit, you will create

191

:

the most amazing results, period.

192

:

You will blow your own mind.

193

:

So let's recap.

194

:

First, you want to pick one big goal, make

it something that will stretch you, push

195

:

you think of it as an impossible goal.

196

:

That it's really going to

challenge you and make you grow.

197

:

And if you have more than one,

just pick one to start with.

198

:

It doesn't matter which one it is.

199

:

Just decide and then move forward.

200

:

Second, commit to constraint.

201

:

Say no to the distractions.

202

:

Focus all of your energy

on this one thing.

203

:

Constraint is what will

create success for you.

204

:

Third, find your compelling reason.

205

:

Make it powerful, powerful enough that

it keeps you in the game no matter how.

206

:

No matter how hard things feel.

207

:

Fourth.

208

:

Refuse to quit quitting slows

you down way more than failure

209

:

will instead of quitting.

210

:

Use failure as feedback

and keep moving forward.

211

:

Remember, failure is just means,

remember, failure just means that things

212

:

didn't go as you had hoped or planned.

213

:

That's it, and this is how

you create massive results.

214

:

This is how you change your life.

215

:

This is how you blow your own mind.

216

:

So here's your challenge.

217

:

Pick your one thing, decide what you're

committing to, and then go all in.

218

:

Constraint is going to feel

uncomfortable at first, but I

219

:

promise you it will change your life.
