... the backbreaking labor and last minute orders ... staying up into the wee hours of the morning (my dedicated employees at my side!)
We’d finally make it home and fall into bed, only to get up the next day and do it again! The life of a maker is exhilarating, rewarding, exhausting, and wonderful - because you’re a giver. And I bet you’re like me and wouldn’t have it any other way.Know someone who needs to hear this episode?

Speaker:Here is your host gift biz gal Sue moon Heights.
Speaker:Hi there,
Speaker:it's Sue and welcome To a very special edition of the
Speaker:podcast. If this is your first time listening,
Speaker:you've picked a great day to join in because this week
Speaker:we're celebrating you.
Speaker:If you make handmade products for fun,
Speaker:perhaps for your own use and to give to friends as
Speaker:gifts, we're celebrating you.
Speaker:If you make handmade products as a source of income,
Speaker:whether it's a sideline activity for supplemental family money or as
Speaker:a full-time business,
Speaker:we're celebrating you too.
Speaker:It's a week honoring all handmade product creators leading up to
Speaker:the first ever formally registered national bakers crafters maker's day from
Speaker:now into the future recognized on January 21st,
Speaker:I came upon this idea back in November,
Speaker:I reflected on how,
Speaker:if you own a business,
Speaker:you scrambled this past year to have an online presence.
Speaker:If you didn't already,
Speaker:because that was the primary way you could sell given social
Speaker:distancing. And as the holidays drew near,
Speaker:I saw you hustling to promote your products,
Speaker:make and fill order after order and ensure that all the
Speaker:gifts arrived in time.
Speaker:Given the crazy delivery delays we had,
Speaker:even with last year,
Speaker:being different.
Speaker:This hustle happens all the time as makers.
Speaker:We continually give of ourselves many times to the point of
Speaker:exhaustion, and let's be honest,
Speaker:sacrificing family time so that others can enjoy our top quality
Speaker:handmade products.
Speaker:I remember this all too well when I had my gift
Speaker:basket business,
Speaker:the backbreaking labor,
Speaker:and last minute orders staying up into the wee hours of
Speaker:the morning,
Speaker:my dedicated employees,
Speaker:right by my side,
Speaker:we'd finally make it home and fall into bed only to
Speaker:get up the next day and do it again.
Speaker:It's exhilarating,
Speaker:rewarding, exhausting,
Speaker:and wonderful the life of a maker because you're a giver.
Speaker:And I bet you're like me and wouldn't have it any
Speaker:other way.
Speaker:This led me to the idea that we need to celebrate
Speaker:the beauty you bring to the world in January,
Speaker:when there's time to rejuvenate and relax some space to take
Speaker:some time for yourself for once.
Speaker:If you have a business orders are back to a more
Speaker:manageable flow and you can breathe again,
Speaker:look at what you've just done.
Speaker:All the love,
Speaker:talent, spirit,
Speaker:and heart you put into your creations are now out.
Speaker:Being enjoyed in the world.
Speaker:That's an amazing thing.
Speaker:Handmade products.
Speaker:Gosh, if you think about it,
Speaker:they go back to the stone ages.
Speaker:When people used to use animal hide to cover and warm
Speaker:themselves and remember a scene in history books.
Speaker:And when you visit museums,
Speaker:how they formed tools out of stone and wood,
Speaker:all this for survival.
Speaker:As the centuries,
Speaker:moved on handmade products were the foundation forming the comfortable life
Speaker:we experienced today.
Speaker:Small villages of crafters made garments for warmth,
Speaker:Juul refer dormant and tools of all kinds to make tasks
Speaker:easier. They used creativity to make food taste good and look
Speaker:so appetizing.
Speaker:They also produced oils and lotions for healing,
Speaker:pottery for cooking and painting,
Speaker:woodworking needlework.
Speaker:So many things as our culture advanced these activities have remained
Speaker:and continued to be expressions of individuality.
Speaker:Their creation brings us joy and is so good for our
Speaker:soul. So based on all this reflection,
Speaker:I decided that we should celebrate this history and celebrate you
Speaker:too. As I said in the beginning,
Speaker:whether you do this for self fulfillment and fun,
Speaker:or as a business,
Speaker:I want to recognize you and honor you on the new
Speaker:national bakers crafters maker's day celebrated on January 21st.
Speaker:Here are some ways that you can recognize and lift up
Speaker:your fellow makers.
Speaker:First call a friend who makes something handmade as a hobby
Speaker:and tell her how much you like her creations.
Speaker:A compliment goes a long way and will warm both of
Speaker:your hearts.
Speaker:Second, think of friends who are handmade product creators.
Speaker:When you have a gift to give purchasing something handmade means
Speaker:it's one of a kind and we'll be all the more
Speaker:special for its uniqueness.
Speaker:A third way would be to purchase items from small businesses
Speaker:that make their own products.
Speaker:You know,
Speaker:there's a family behind every logo who relies on this income
Speaker:for part or all of their needs.
Speaker:A fourth way to celebrate is if you're a maker,
Speaker:support another maker through purchasing their product or reaching out to
Speaker:tell them that they've inspired you or motivated you to do
Speaker:something that you've never thought of before five,
Speaker:if you're part of it,
Speaker:the group like a quilting Guild or a sewing circle,
Speaker:do something special to highlight each other or start a charity
Speaker:project offered on behalf of your organization to pay it forward.
Speaker:Number six,
Speaker:if you're a teacher dedicated an art session to learning and
Speaker:understanding the role handmade creations play in our history and lives
Speaker:today, and finally,
Speaker:as a handmade product maker,
Speaker:do something special for yourself to maybe actually use your product
Speaker:that you work so hard for others to enjoy.
Speaker:And I'm sure you can think of a number of other
Speaker:ways you can highlight and support your fellow product makers.
Speaker:These ideas are just to get you started.
