You're listening to gift biz on rapt episode 85.

Speaker:are just getting started,
Speaker:you'll discover new insight to gain traction and to grow your
Speaker:business. And today I have joining us Stephanie lanes of smooth
Speaker:skin supply.
Speaker:Stephanie has had the unique opportunity to travel the world,
Speaker:teaching her famous seven minute Brazilian wax technique.
Speaker:She received her aesthetics license in 2003,
Speaker:and since then has worked in every possible job within the
Speaker:field with this extensive knowledge of all aspects of the industry.
Speaker:Stephanie identified that her true passion is in creating hair removal,
Speaker:waxes, and skincare products.
Speaker:This led to the creation of her own wholesale distribution company
Speaker:called smooth skin supply.
Speaker:Welcome to the show,
Speaker:Stephanie, Thank you so much,
Speaker:Sue. It's the great being on the show.
Speaker:I'm very excited to talk with you and share my wonderful
Speaker:and diverse education with everyone who's listening.
Speaker:I am so excited to hear your whole story.
Speaker:We've had a little bit of conversation in the back in
Speaker:the prep for the interview,
Speaker:and I wanted to stop you because I'm like,
Speaker:Oh my gosh,
Speaker:this will be so great for our listeners to hear.
Speaker:So I look forward to sharing all of that.
Speaker:But the first thing I always like to do with our
Speaker:guests is get to know you in a little bit of
Speaker:a different way.
Speaker:And that is by having you describe your ideal motivational candle.
Speaker:So if you were to help us envision what that would
Speaker:look like,
Speaker:what color would your candle be and what would be the
Speaker:quote on the candle?
Speaker:So my color would be purple.
Speaker:I love purple.
Speaker:I always have.
Speaker:And my motivational quote on my candle would be,
Speaker:you are enough.
Speaker:And I have had that on my mirror at home.
Speaker:I've had that on sticky at my desk just to say
Speaker:that I'm enough,
Speaker:no matter what the situation is,
Speaker:I'm doing enough.
Speaker:I'm a good enough mother.
Speaker:I'm a good enough person.
Speaker:I have a good heart.
Speaker:I mean,
Speaker:all of those things,
Speaker:I need to be reminded on my basic core.
Speaker:And I think a lot of us in business,
Speaker:we get to the point where we're demanded by so many
Speaker:people that sometimes if someone says something negative or they don't
Speaker:like what we're saying,
Speaker:or they don't like what we're doing,
Speaker:we question our ability as a human,
Speaker:not what we're doing in business,
Speaker:but we take it so personally.
Speaker:So I'm enough.
Speaker:Anything that I do is enough and I love the purple.
Speaker:I mean,
Speaker:I've been loving purple since purple rain came out.
Speaker:When Prince died,
Speaker:I was devastated,
Speaker:but purple has always been my color.
Speaker:And the candles I have at home are purple.
Speaker:They're lavender.
Speaker:So my daughter has one in her room.
Speaker:We keep one in the living room.
Speaker:We keep one in my bedroom.
Speaker:Yes. I love that.
Speaker:And you know,
Speaker:it's so crazy because you can get so many people telling
Speaker:you how much you've helped them,
Speaker:you know,
Speaker:with whatever you do in your life and give to his
Speaker:listeners, whatever it is that you're doing.
Speaker:But isn't it crazy how it's just that one person who
Speaker:says something negative or challenges you or all of that,
Speaker:it wipes away,
Speaker:all that other stuff.
Speaker:And you focus on that one thing,
Speaker:isn't it crazy,
Speaker:Crazy. And I think the problem is,
Speaker:is that we allow people and I've learned this over time
Speaker:because I was always a knee jerk response.
Speaker:When a customer was upset or when someone was upset with
Speaker:me, I would jump in the same energy that they were.
Speaker:So you come at me crazy.
Speaker:I'd come back at you crazy.
Speaker:And I've really gotten to the point in my business and
Speaker:in my life that I allow people to stay what they
Speaker:want to say.
Speaker:Cause they're going to say it any way,
Speaker:whether it's in written word,
Speaker:whether it's over the phone,
Speaker:whether it's in a voicemail message,
Speaker:they're going to say it.
Speaker:So I allow people to see what they have to say,
Speaker:but I have learned to really take a step back and
Speaker:say, I appreciate what your concerns are and your comments.
Speaker:And thank you so much for that.
Speaker:I'm going to respond to you tomorrow.
Speaker:Instead of me immediately responding back because I respond with the
Speaker:emotions first.
Speaker:I never take a step back to look at it,
Speaker:listen to it,
Speaker:really take down the points and then come back the next
Speaker:day and respond to it.
Speaker:And I've been doing that a lot more.
Speaker:And what I find is people don't have an issue with
Speaker:what I'm doing.
Speaker:There's something going on in their personal life that they've found
Speaker:outlet to release that energy to me.
Speaker:Right? And usually the conversation goes to,
Speaker:well, what's really going on in your life to lead you
Speaker:to this place where you feel that this is the kind
Speaker:of energy you want to carry and release to other people.
Speaker:And you know what,
Speaker:80% of the time it's really that it's not even what
Speaker:I've done or what I've said.
Speaker:It's really,
Speaker:they have something going on in their life.
Speaker:And I find that responding in that way,
Speaker:especially in business has gotten me to the point where a
Speaker:lot of people take me even more serious because even in
Speaker:business, as you know,
Speaker:business to business can always be,
Speaker:if there's something you don't agree on,
Speaker:if they're not making your timeline,
Speaker:if they're not getting it to you,
Speaker:the way they promised yelling back and forth never gets the
Speaker:product or get this the solution.
Speaker:So I'd even tell other businesses I'm going to get back
Speaker:to you tomorrow.
Speaker:I appreciate you saying that.
Speaker:I appreciate you coming with your concern,
Speaker:but let me go ahead and table that and proceed on
Speaker:what I was doing today,
Speaker:but I will get back to you no later than three
Speaker:o'clock. Yeah.
Speaker:And I mean,
Speaker:it gives you a little bit of breathing room and I
Speaker:really like,
Speaker:I like how you consciously say I've identified that it used
Speaker:to be,
Speaker:that I would respond in kind and now you're going back.
Speaker:And I think when you give that time and then you
Speaker:respond in the way that you feel is appropriate,
Speaker:it helps them reset themselves as well.
Speaker:It also,
Speaker:I find gives them an opportunity to really come back and
Speaker:say, you know,
Speaker:I didn't really mean what I said,
Speaker:what I meant to say was right.
Speaker:And then I said,
Speaker:Oh, okay.
Speaker:Because the way I took it was you were upset about
Speaker:that. And then I know it was more of this,
Speaker:but that came out and it gives a bigger dialogue Communication.
Speaker:So much comes back to just communicating,
Speaker:right Communication with energy and effort towards what you need and
Speaker:not the emotion of what you didn't.
Speaker:You know what I'm saying?
Speaker:And that for me has been an eye-opener.
Speaker:And even in my personal life,
Speaker:I've held my tongue a little bit,
Speaker:really found myself when I'm holding my tongue a lot more.
Speaker:I can really listen to you and really focus on you
Speaker:without my heart rate and blood pressure going up.
Speaker:But I just kind of give you the side-eye like,
Speaker:okay, and how are you expecting me to respond to this?
Speaker:Let me know how you want me to respond.
Speaker:And that catches people off guard.
Speaker:Yeah. So once the op guard is gone and once the
Speaker:energy and the anger is gone,
Speaker:then we can have a conversation,
Speaker:but you're coming at me all loud and yelling and hollering
Speaker:that, that,
Speaker:that doesn't work for me.
Speaker:And it doesn't work for me giving it either.
Speaker:I've really learned that in business,
Speaker:that people,
Speaker:especially in my industry,
Speaker:because I call them,
Speaker:they're very,
Speaker:they're very emotional.
Speaker:You know,
Speaker:I had people that need something yesterday,
Speaker:right? And I tell them,
Speaker:in order for you to get it yesterday,
Speaker:you still got to pay for it.
Speaker:Or you got today.
Speaker:You still have to pay for it.
Speaker:So, you know,
Speaker:I, I want to help you,
Speaker:but at the same time,
Speaker:it's not my fault.
Speaker:You waited till the last minute.
Speaker:It's not my fault that you didn't see,
Speaker:or you didn't go over your inventory.
Speaker:I have a girlfriend who has a saying that ever since
Speaker:she said it to me makes so much sense to me.
Speaker:And it's your lack of planning does not become my emergency.
Speaker:Absolutely not.
Speaker:Good. I love that.
Speaker:So thank you,
Speaker:Glenda. If you're listening to this podcast,
Speaker:I love that.
Speaker:Yeah. Let's go back Stephanie.
Speaker:And I want to hear the story of how you found
Speaker:your way.
Speaker:You know,
Speaker:we have so many listeners who maybe are working a nine
Speaker:to five or they have a hobby or they're thinking they
Speaker:want to do something and they're not even exactly sure what
Speaker:it is.
Speaker:So stories about how people have evolved to what they're currently
Speaker:doing is always so enlightening.
Speaker:You know,
Speaker:even if it's a totally different field,
Speaker:right? So take us back to your history and kind of
Speaker:the journey of how you've gotten to where you are today.
Speaker:So Bonnie journey has been very interesting.
Speaker:So I come from a military family.
Speaker:Both of my parents were in the military and they came
Speaker:from the South and transplant it to California.
Speaker:And that's where they stay.
Speaker:They fell in love with it.
Speaker:They fell in love obviously.
Speaker:And there's three of us.
Speaker:So the expectation was always that we were going to work.
Speaker:And let me tell you,
Speaker:my family's understanding of what I do is I don't work.
Speaker:So I'm going to keep,
Speaker:keep that little nugget because that's what the stigma of entrepreneurs
Speaker:are, is that you go and you sit and you look
Speaker:or you get up late or whatever.
Speaker:So, you know,
Speaker:I did everything I worked for non-profit I worked for corporate
Speaker:right out of college.
Speaker:And I call,
Speaker:I graduated from college at 22.
Speaker:And I had my first job as soon as I graduated.
Speaker:So I've been working way before that,
Speaker:but I've worked.
Speaker:So then I went a nonprofit.
Speaker:I was there for a few years.
Speaker:I went to profit and then I went and worked for
Speaker:politics. I worked for a city.
Speaker:I was the recreation director for the entire city.
Speaker:And this was outside of San Francisco.
Speaker:And if you know the Bay area,
Speaker:if you're familiar with it,
Speaker:the Bay area is very expensive.
Speaker:Anything for your children extracurricular,
Speaker:you pay for.
Speaker:So if you don't pay for the education,
Speaker:which most people do,
Speaker:anything you do outside of that is very expensive.
Speaker:So I have always battled with skincare.
Speaker:I've always had just skin issues.
Speaker:None of my family members,
Speaker:my sisters,
Speaker:my mother,
Speaker:none of them have skin problems at all.
Speaker:I was always the ugly duckling.
Speaker:No one knew what to do with my face.
Speaker:I went to doctors,
Speaker:I did all of the normal things.
Speaker:They prescribed me drugs.
Speaker:That didn't work.
Speaker:I had a very good friend when I was teaching.
Speaker:I've been teaching aerobics almost 22 years.
Speaker:And she was working at the gym that I was at
Speaker:and we became good friends.
Speaker:And she says,
Speaker:Stephanie, you're so beautiful,
Speaker:but your skin is absolutely horrible.
Speaker:And I just looked at her like,
Speaker:Oh, very nice to say that to me.
Speaker:Like, I love you,
Speaker:but you need help.
Speaker:I see you around here.
Speaker:You're beautiful.
Speaker:Your energy is great,
Speaker:but your skin is not,
Speaker:Oh my gosh,
Speaker:I would have gone in a corner and started crying.
Speaker:Probably I sat there like,
Speaker:she's like,
Speaker:I have this really great friend.
Speaker:I think you should go see her.
Speaker:And she helps with skin conditions.
Speaker:And I said,
Speaker:well, what would I take it from you?
Speaker:She thought,
Speaker:trust me.
Speaker:I go to her.
Speaker:It's fine.
Speaker:Just go.
Speaker:And I'm looking at her,
Speaker:like I thought you were my friend.
Speaker:And it's so funny.
Speaker:And we're still friends now,
Speaker:but I went.
Speaker:And so Ms.
Speaker:Ida, who is still doing services,
Speaker:she is in Oakland.
Speaker:Her business is called the skin studio and she is a
Speaker:nurse. She does everything,
Speaker:lasers, injections,
Speaker:everything. However,
Speaker:her business is set up just like a doctor's office.
Speaker:So you have a 30 minute appointment.
Speaker:You come and you come out,
Speaker:she runs six rooms by herself.
Speaker:I'm looking at everything that she's doing,
Speaker:all the products that I'm buying.
Speaker:All, I'm seeing her every two weeks,
Speaker:I'm doing all this stuff.
Speaker:And I said,
Speaker:what did it take for you to get all of this?
Speaker:I said,
Speaker:I understand the nursing part,
Speaker:but what did it take for you to start treating people
Speaker:and helping people with their skin?
Speaker:She said,
Speaker:I went to beauty school.
Speaker:It was about six months.
Speaker:I did it at night and now this is what I
Speaker:have. And so I'm adding it up.
Speaker:I'm like,
Speaker:okay, I dropped $300 every month.
Speaker:I, every time I see her as $80,
Speaker:she runs six rooms every half hour,
Speaker:you know,
Speaker:that's one 60 an hour.
Speaker:I mean,
Speaker:I'm really like going through the numbers in my head.
Speaker:Like I can do this.
Speaker:And the thing that also What's interesting is you came from
Speaker:a place of a need of something that you already know.
Speaker:And it also,
Speaker:I got to say that your friend was a very dear
Speaker:friend to just say something to you because so many people
Speaker:wouldn't because they don't want to hurt your feelings.
Speaker:But I think we can accept that type of thing from
Speaker:our close friends.
Speaker:We can't,
Speaker:it's still took me a little bit.
Speaker:Cause when I went and when I started looking at what
Speaker:the myths Ida was saying,
Speaker:I kept saying,
Speaker:you know,
Speaker:I've tried everything.
Speaker:And she said,
Speaker:you really have it.
Speaker:She's said,
Speaker:that's the thing in the myth about skin conditions that have
Speaker:issues, you do need help.
Speaker:That's outside of your doing.
Speaker:It will never come from you.
Speaker:And you could really relate to the pain,
Speaker:the need someone,
Speaker:because you had been there and look at how beautiful you
Speaker:are now.
Speaker:Clearly she was fabulous.
Speaker:Oh, she's beautiful.
Speaker:I mean,
Speaker:she really got me on a great in narrow.
Speaker:So I continue with Ms.
Speaker:Ida for a few years,
Speaker:but I started really thinking,
Speaker:I went to school at night.
Speaker:So I went and worked all day.
Speaker:I went to a school that's no longer open,
Speaker:but miss Marty's was open for like 50 years in San
Speaker:Francisco. And I commuted from biz brain where I worked all
Speaker:the way into the city.
Speaker:Every night I went to school from Monday through Thursday night
Speaker:from five to nine.
Speaker:And then I would go all day,
Speaker:Saturday. And I did that,
Speaker:still working my full-time job.
Speaker:And I did that for six months and I just loved
Speaker:it. Now,
Speaker:mind you,
Speaker:I was,
Speaker:you know,
Speaker:at that time I was making 85,
Speaker:90,000 a year.
Speaker:My mom and dad were just over the moon.
Speaker:I was living in the Bay area.
Speaker:I could afford living there at that time.
Speaker:What were you doing at that point?
Speaker:I was the recreation director for the city.
Speaker:So I was in charge of everything.
Speaker:I had someone above me,
Speaker:but I was kind of the middle person.
Speaker:I was the liaison between all of the schools and the
Speaker:city sports.
Speaker:And I organized everything.
Speaker:I organize events and parades and all this stuff for the
Speaker:city. So I did politics and city and all of that
Speaker:because it was drama,
Speaker:but I was paid very well.
Speaker:And I got my license.
Speaker:My mom was the model for me when I went before
Speaker:the state board.
Speaker:And I got it.
Speaker:You know,
Speaker:instantly now mind you,
Speaker:I have a college degree too.
Speaker:So you know,
Speaker:my, as a science background as well.
Speaker:So, you know,
Speaker:all of this was very easy for me and I was
Speaker:going to work and I'm like,
Speaker:you know what?
Speaker:I just don't like this.
Speaker:It's not fulfilling.
Speaker:I think I really want to go into skincare.
Speaker:So I'm just going to put out some resumes and see
Speaker:if I get a job.
Speaker:If I don't get a job,
Speaker:that means it wasn't meant for me.
Speaker:After a month,
Speaker:I got a call back from a major nationwide company that
Speaker:does everything.
Speaker:So they sell hair products,
Speaker:skin products,
Speaker:and they offer skin services and hair services all under the
Speaker:same roof.
Speaker:I went in there and it was in the downtown San
Speaker:Francisco in the Embarcadero center,
Speaker:lots of money.
Speaker:And I walked in there and they said,
Speaker:we need an esthetician.
Speaker:Can you be full-time if you're here,
Speaker:four days a week is considered full time.
Speaker:You'll get benefits.
Speaker:You'll make very good money is 50% commission.
Speaker:We provide everything.
Speaker:So I was like,
Speaker:okay, well,
Speaker:how busy are you?
Speaker:They're like,
Speaker:we're extremely busy where we have people waiting for us at
Speaker:night. And we have to put people out at seven when
Speaker:we closed.
Speaker:And so at that location is at the bottom of the
Speaker:mall. The mall is above us.
Speaker:And then we were at the bottom.
Speaker:So ground floor.
Speaker:So it was perfect location,
Speaker:always people everywhere.
Speaker:I was like,
Speaker:ah, I don't know about commission.
Speaker:I don't know because commission is not guaranteed.
Speaker:I'm making,
Speaker:you know,
Speaker:$2,000 every paycheck.
Speaker:Oh, that's a tough choice.
Speaker:Huge, tough choice.
Speaker:But I did.
Speaker:I chucked it.
Speaker:I let it go.
Speaker:I went in and I gave my right to the nation.
Speaker:I was excited.
Speaker:I went into this new job.
Speaker:First paycheck was $400.
Speaker:I said,
Speaker:Oh, I'm not going to make it.
Speaker:I can't do it.
Speaker:$400. I mean,
Speaker:that's yeah,
Speaker:that's not you pay my car.
Speaker:I mean,
Speaker:do it.
Speaker:So what to do,
Speaker:I just,
Speaker:I turned everything on.
Speaker:I knew I started studying nails.
Speaker:I started studying hair and I just sold and sold and
Speaker:sold. And they came out with this one promotion that changed
Speaker:the business for everything they gave each person that ever came
Speaker:in there,
Speaker:a coupon to use the service of their choice.
Speaker:And after that it was golden.
Speaker:I mean,
Speaker:I stayed there for a year and a half and I
Speaker:started asking for more and they couldn't give me for more,
Speaker:but I really became reputable.
Speaker:I was interviewed on TV for StriVectin.
Speaker:When StriVectin came out,
Speaker:I did a commercial for them.
Speaker:I'm talking about it.
Speaker:Cause we were selling it there.
Speaker:They came in and brought a camera crew and more people
Speaker:came in to see me.
Speaker:So I had a lot of opportunities to really get out
Speaker:there and make a name for myself in a location.
Speaker:It was the location.
Speaker:I always say that the location was perfect.
Speaker:The timing was perfect.
Speaker:The money was perfect at that moment.
Speaker:At that time,
Speaker:had I waited a little bit longer educated yourself first in
Speaker:something that you were passionate about.
Speaker:And then you took a big risk too.
Speaker:I did.
Speaker:So did so.
Speaker:It was all of it coming together at the same time.
Speaker:It was,
Speaker:it was,
Speaker:then it came to a plateau where I was making the
Speaker:store a lot of money.
Speaker:I was making them at least 25,000
Speaker:a month just by myself.
Speaker:And I got no commission on any product that I sold.
Speaker:I only got commission on hands that touched the face.
Speaker:So I was like,
Speaker:can I get a 5%?
Speaker:Oh no,
Speaker:no, no,
Speaker:no, no.
Speaker:I'm like,
Speaker:you do realize that I make by myself 25,000
Speaker:in the store,
Speaker:I'm one person.
Speaker:We have 10 people in here.
Speaker:I make more than all of those 10 people on skincare.
Speaker:You do know that.
Speaker:And I sell hair and I sell nails.
Speaker:And I upsale,
Speaker:I said,
Speaker:I do more than any of the people here,
Speaker:including your manager,
Speaker:but I don't make that much.
Speaker:I'm not getting any,
Speaker:you know,
Speaker:I didn't even get a bonus.
Speaker:I'm like,
Speaker:can I get a bonus?
Speaker:Can I get a reward?
Speaker:Can I get a gift certificate?
Speaker:And they're like,
Speaker:no, we really don't have a structure for you.
Speaker:So I left and I went and worked for a company
Speaker:that I sold most of the products for.
Speaker:And I met this wonderful woman who I'm still very good
Speaker:friends with now.
Speaker:And she does what I do.
Speaker:She has a distribution and distribution.
Speaker:She's really,
Speaker:she supplies,
Speaker:salons and spas for the estheticians to do the services.
Speaker:So she's on the back end.
Speaker:So what I'm doing is on the front end,
Speaker:which means I have a limited amount of people I can
Speaker:see. I have a limited amount of income I can make
Speaker:every day on the backend is very different because I can
Speaker:make lifetime of money all 24 hours.
Speaker:Not when I'm seeing someone or not.
Speaker:When I'm touching someone's face.
Speaker:And she really taught me the back end and said,
Speaker:you know,
Speaker:I did what you did.
Speaker:She's like I did it.
Speaker:I started doing the same thing.
Speaker:I went back to school when I was 55.
Speaker:I hustled and I did all of that.
Speaker:And I just realized you can only see a certain amount
Speaker:of people a day.
Speaker:You're always going to limit yourself on your income.
Speaker:What I do,
Speaker:there is no limit on the income.
Speaker:You should really think about it.
Speaker:And I kept looking at her like,
Speaker:no, I,
Speaker:you know,
Speaker:I think I really want to open my own.
Speaker:I want to be my own owner.
Speaker:I don't want to really work for anybody.
Speaker:And I'm still working for you,
Speaker:even though you're showing me this and she's like,
Speaker:it's not going to work out the way you think it
Speaker:is. I've done it.
Speaker:And you know how it is when you have your mind
Speaker:made up,
Speaker:no one can talk you out of anything,
Speaker:you have to experience it.
Speaker:And so I left her and I went and opened up
Speaker:my own office.
Speaker:I shared it with an OB GYN and he let me
Speaker:have one wing of his entire office.
Speaker:He saw patients every 15 minutes and they were always specialty
Speaker:women, women who bleed for no reason.
Speaker:And they don't know why women who can't concede women who
Speaker:have just issues.
Speaker:So every 15 minutes he had a new person coming in.
Speaker:He let me advertise in his waiting area.
Speaker:They saw everything that we had going on.
Speaker:They smelled my oils,
Speaker:they smelled lavender.
Speaker:They saw,
Speaker:you know,
Speaker:they could hear the music when they walked in and they
Speaker:were like,
Speaker:Whoa, what is this?
Speaker:And this was way before med spa even came out.
Speaker:So I really just integrated with him and he was great.
Speaker:And of course,
Speaker:when you work for an OBG and your shared office,
Speaker:somehow some way you get pregnant too.
Speaker:So I got pregnant.
Speaker:I was pregnant with my daughter and I had a full
Speaker:staff. I had a massage therapist and I had other estheticians
Speaker:working for me.
Speaker:I set everything up.
Speaker:So by the time I was ready to have her,
Speaker:I was going to be able to just,
Speaker:you know,
Speaker:have a little bit of a break.
Speaker:They run the office,
Speaker:they run the business and then I come back.
Speaker:It didn't work out that way.
Speaker:I worked all the way up until I had her because
Speaker:I didn't realize I was having her until I went to
Speaker:my appointment.
Speaker:And they said,
Speaker:Oh, we're having some problems.
Speaker:We're going to need to put you in now.
Speaker:And I'm like,
Speaker:but I'm not ready.
Speaker:Now I have appointment.
Speaker:Well, sometimes that just doesn't work.
Speaker:Life takes over.
Speaker:It never works,
Speaker:never works.
Speaker:So of course I have her and I get a call
Speaker:the next day.
Speaker:I'm still I'm on my way back from the hospital.
Speaker:And I don't know if my employees fought with each other
Speaker:or they didn't get along.
Speaker:And it came to a head I will never know.
Speaker:But anyway,
Speaker:both of them quit at the same time.
Speaker:Okay. And you just had a baby.
Speaker:I just had a baby.
Speaker:So I'm like,
Speaker:I have all these people waiting,
Speaker:you know,
Speaker:I'm not supposed to be on my feet.
Speaker:So it happened on a Thursday.
Speaker:So I,
Speaker:you know,
Speaker:let everybody know Friday where we close.
Speaker:We will reopen on Tuesday.
Speaker:Cause we only are open Tuesday through Saturday.
Speaker:So I haul myself in there after having a C-section mind
Speaker:you with my baby and my dad and my mom alternates.
Speaker:So my dad came in and stayed in the back with
Speaker:the baby.
Speaker:I breastfed in between clients.
Speaker:I breastfed at lunch and I saw everybody and I worked
Speaker:there because it was an hour from where we lived.
Speaker:I did that for two years.
Speaker:Oh my word.
Speaker:So I've had,
Speaker:when I say struggle,
Speaker:struggle, I've really struggled.
Speaker:Two years,
Speaker:I did that.
Speaker:And then it's,
Speaker:my daughter was getting older.
Speaker:I was getting scared because I,
Speaker:if something happened to her or me,
Speaker:we were always an hour away.
Speaker:So I decided to close that area where I was.
Speaker:And I moved it up to where I was living with
Speaker:my family and I reopened.
Speaker:And of course,
Speaker:moving a business that far away kills business.
Speaker:Anytime you do a service-based business where people are used to
Speaker:coming to you,
Speaker:you had to start fresh.
Speaker:I had to start all over.
Speaker:So I went in and did that.
Speaker:I opened it up and I only did it.
Speaker:Part-time I went to work for a doctor who had a
Speaker:full medical spa,
Speaker:full time and same thing.
Speaker:I go now,
Speaker:but now I got commissioned.
Speaker:So whenever I sold,
Speaker:I got commissioned.
Speaker:I still got 50% on services.
Speaker:I got percent on product.
Speaker:I worked for her for two years.
Speaker:I did all the consultation for lasers.
Speaker:I did all the before and afters.
Speaker:I worked on acne clients.
Speaker:She was an internist.
Speaker:So she did an internal medicine.
Speaker:So she started doing the Botox.
Speaker:She started doing the rest of the land,
Speaker:the Juvederm.
Speaker:And I learned a lot on the injections.
Speaker:I learned a lot about laser hair removal.
Speaker:A lot of people don't really realize it is not permanent.
Speaker:I did,
Speaker:you know,
Speaker:before and afters on a lot of people who just had
Speaker:skin conditions.
Speaker:So I did that at the same time while still working
Speaker:at night,
Speaker:still having my daughter.
Speaker:So I,
Speaker:like I said,
Speaker:I I've done many,
Speaker:many, many things and many aspects of what I do and
Speaker:what I love.
Speaker:And because I love skincare so much,
Speaker:I knew that I could work for her in the daytime
Speaker:and still go and see my clients in the evening afternoon
Speaker:on weekends,
Speaker:and still be able to have my hands in what I
Speaker:was doing and enjoy it.
Speaker:Now, the money was not there.
Speaker:I will say I was really,
Speaker:really struggled.
Speaker:You know,
Speaker:when you have a child,
Speaker:a lot of your expenses change when you're by yourself,
Speaker:it's very easy.
Speaker:You can start to live on top of the ramen,
Speaker:but when you know,
Speaker:you bring children into the situation,
Speaker:your children always comes first.
Speaker:And you know,
Speaker:California is very expensive to live.
Speaker:Not only just to live there,
Speaker:but everything is high.
Speaker:Insurance is high.
Speaker:Medical insurance is high.
Speaker:You know,
Speaker:it's just very,
Speaker:very high.
Speaker:So my parents being in the military,
Speaker:I have a great plan.
Speaker:They added my daughter to their medical plans.
Speaker:So that kind of helped me up until about two years
Speaker:ago. So that was a big chunk that took off,
Speaker:you know,
Speaker:and I lived at home with them.
Speaker:So that was another issue that I didn't have to worry
Speaker:about as far as rent.
Speaker:But once I,
Speaker:the doctor kind of closed,
Speaker:she mishandled some money and wasn't able to float the business
Speaker:anymore. She closed,
Speaker:I went full-time back into my spa,
Speaker:which I had already had already.
Speaker:I got another opportunity from the same woman that I worked
Speaker:for. When I left pure beauty,
Speaker:she asked me,
Speaker:did I want to do some training for her?
Speaker:And it was in waxy.
Speaker:And I said,
Speaker:you know,
Speaker:I don't see why I couldn't do that.
Speaker:They would pay me pretty well.
Speaker:I usually charge five to $600 per class.
Speaker:I said,
Speaker:sure. So I went in there and I did a class
Speaker:for her.
Speaker:And I said,
Speaker:I said,
Speaker:what would you,
Speaker:how would you feel if I started doing classes where I
Speaker:was, cause I was about two and a half hours from
Speaker:her. And I started selling the products that I'm doing.
Speaker:And she said,
Speaker:I don't think that would be a problem.
Speaker:So she sold me the products.
Speaker:I brought them back to my spa.
Speaker:I started doing classes there.
Speaker:And I started figuring out that these people who are coming
Speaker:to me are coming to me because I'm in a location
Speaker:where number one,
Speaker:they can't get any professional products because going to Sally's and
Speaker:Cosmoprof, that's not really what we like to do.
Speaker:We like to be able to get products that our public
Speaker:cannot get.
Speaker:So I started selling it out of one of my rooms
Speaker:and I was having other people come in saying,
Speaker:Oh, I heard that you have products here.
Speaker:Can I look?
Speaker:And I'm like shipper.
Speaker:So I'm getting more revenue from these other professionals coming in
Speaker:than I was from people coming in to get service.
Speaker:So I said,
Speaker:you know,
Speaker:she was right.
Speaker:Oh my gosh,
Speaker:we'll see people,
Speaker:but I can also make money all the time because they're
Speaker:coming in and getting basic things that I can Mark up
Speaker:70, 80,
Speaker:90, 110,
Speaker:120%. I'm like,
Speaker:wow, what?
Speaker:Oh, wow.
Speaker:So I called around to other businesses and other companies and
Speaker:said, would you be okay with me selling them?
Speaker:And they were like,
Speaker:sure, we don't have anyone in your location.
Speaker:That would be perfect.
Speaker:We would love to refer to you.
Speaker:So I had six different lines that I was selling out
Speaker:of my spa.
Speaker:And I'm like,
Speaker:Oh my gosh,
Speaker:this is paying my rent.
Speaker:It's not my people that I'm seeing it's this,
Speaker:this is she's right.
Speaker:Mary was so right.
Speaker:Mary was like,
Speaker:you cannot,
Speaker:you know,
Speaker:make enough money because you can only see a certain amount
Speaker:of people being as tissues were calling us.
Speaker:We were shipping.
Speaker:I mean,
Speaker:it just blew up.
Speaker:So you were making money off the product you were selling?
Speaker:Absolutely. And it was because I was having classes.
Speaker:So whatever I used in the class,
Speaker:people want it.
Speaker:Right. And is that how the technique started to form?
Speaker:The technique was before I actually started selling products,
Speaker:I was always fast at waxing.
Speaker:I didn't want to do it.
Speaker:I didn't want to do Brazilian waxing.
Speaker:I just thought it was,
Speaker:I didn't like it.
Speaker:I didn't want to see people naked,
Speaker:to be honest.
Speaker:I didn't want to see them in that position,
Speaker:but the demand was starting to really take fold and I
Speaker:could command the amount of money I wanted.
Speaker:So I would charge a hundred dollars at least for you
Speaker:to come in And time let's face it.
Speaker:I mean,
Speaker:seven minutes.
Speaker:The time everyone is time strapped.
Speaker:Right? Very much so to be able to go in and
Speaker:get things taken care of quickly and be out could be
Speaker:a big niche.
Speaker:It's a huge niche and it didn't start that way.
Speaker:It took me three years to perfect that technique.
Speaker:And I did it all by giving away free services.
Speaker:So I didn't charge people for me to kind of practice
Speaker:what I needed to do to get faster.
Speaker:I did,
Speaker:it was Brazilian Fridays.
Speaker:So once a month I would put an ad on Craigslist
Speaker:and said,
Speaker:I need models.
Speaker:If you want a Brazilian,
Speaker:you don't have to pay for it,
Speaker:but I'm going to practice.
Speaker:You may still have hair when you leave,
Speaker:you know,
Speaker:give us a call.
Speaker:And I did that one Friday,
Speaker:every single month.
Speaker:And that's how I became faster in three years.
Speaker:So wasn't on people that were already seeing me.
Speaker:It wasn't on people who were paying me.
Speaker:I did that for by free because I knew if I
Speaker:was messing someone up or if I was going to enter
Speaker:them, I couldn't necessarily charge them.
Speaker:So once I perfected it and I stopped giving it away
Speaker:for free as a hundred dollars for you to come and
Speaker:even make an appointment,
Speaker:because you're going to get in and out,
Speaker:you're going to get the best products,
Speaker:but I'm not going to be there torturing you for an
Speaker:hour. Like it's,
Speaker:some people will.
Speaker:And some people still are,
Speaker:even to this day,
Speaker:they're still people who don't know what they're doing.
Speaker:And they're still trying to charge a lot of money.
Speaker:And that's where a lot of discrepancies come in.
Speaker:Now, remember,
Speaker:this is before Yelp.
Speaker:This is before Google review.
Speaker:This is before you know,
Speaker:anything wouldn't be social.
Speaker:This was way before that.
Speaker:Right. You can never go on and say how bad it
Speaker:was or what your experience was.
Speaker:It wasn't like that.
Speaker:Right. Okay.
Speaker:So you were seeing,
Speaker:so you were testing on a lot of people to perfect
Speaker:this skill of speed and result.
Speaker:Obviously I had to.
Speaker:And so then you had people,
Speaker:you got it down.
Speaker:So it was something that was really working.
Speaker:And then now move forward to what you're doing.
Speaker:Like how you're teaching it,
Speaker:like what you're doing now.
Speaker:So from there I spun off because everybody that I was
Speaker:selling products,
Speaker:didn't like the way I was doing it,
Speaker:or they wanted me to just do it their way.
Speaker:And so I kind of let that go.
Speaker:And I found someone who was able to make the waxes
Speaker:the way I wanted them.
Speaker:So with the technique,
Speaker:that technique was always there before I even created my waxes.
Speaker:So I did that technique on multiple different products.
Speaker:And that's what people,
Speaker:I think kind of draw to me because it's not just
Speaker:my product that I sell,
Speaker:but I can do the same technique on other people's products
Speaker:as well,
Speaker:because not everybody's going to use my product,
Speaker:but they want to use the technique.
Speaker:I really wanted to perfect it with other products other than
Speaker:my own.
Speaker:But once I created my own,
Speaker:I had a lot of control over what I showed.
Speaker:I've had three DVDs out.
Speaker:So the first DVD was on a product that I didn't
Speaker:tell anyone who it was,
Speaker:it was just a technique,
Speaker:but people kept saying,
Speaker:what are you using?
Speaker:What are you using?
Speaker:And then I was kind of like,
Speaker:well, I'm gonna have to come out with a second DVD
Speaker:showing what I use,
Speaker:but it's going to have to be mine because I want
Speaker:money on the front end of that.
Speaker:Right. Money watching it.
Speaker:And I want money on them so they can use it
Speaker:so they can kind of perfect and see what I'm doing
Speaker:and use it.
Speaker:So once I created my product line,
Speaker:which took a while to get the waxes the way I
Speaker:wanted them to get the technique down with the wax and
Speaker:make sure it was the right wax with what I wanted
Speaker:to show.
Speaker:That's when I really blew up very quickly.
Speaker:I put out my second DVD and it was the second
Speaker:version. I showed everything that I did.
Speaker:I had people calling me all over.
Speaker:I had distribution expanded to Canada.
Speaker:I had distribution and expanded to Australia.
Speaker:It really kind of took off after that second DVD.
Speaker:And then I did a third DVD where it was all
Speaker:things that go wrong.
Speaker:So I decided,
Speaker:and I had a counterpart.
Speaker:Her name is cricket.
Speaker:She also has her own wax brand,
Speaker:all DVDs that come out and training.
Speaker:They're all with.
Speaker:No troubleshooting is always perfect.
Speaker:So the client has perfect hair length.
Speaker:They have a perfect flat tummy.
Speaker:They don't have any cellulite.
Speaker:They're not big bone.
Speaker:They're not large size.
Speaker:They're petite and tiny and cute.
Speaker:What we wanted to do was show the other side of
Speaker:waxing and that's with everyone.
Speaker:So we wax with men.
Speaker:We did plus size.
Speaker:We did people.
Speaker:Who've never had a wax before.
Speaker:So we showed them jumping.
Speaker:We showed them bleeding.
Speaker:We showed the wax not coming off.
Speaker:We showed every single thing that could ever go wrong in
Speaker:a treatment room.
Speaker:Once that video hit the sky's the limit.
Speaker:I mean,
Speaker:I blew up even bigger because people were like,
Speaker:that's happened to me and I never figured out how to
Speaker:get out of it.
Speaker:Or you really,
Speaker:you know,
Speaker:you showed us reality.
Speaker:My first one was nice.
Speaker:The lighting was nice.
Speaker:She was,
Speaker:you know,
Speaker:petite and cute.
Speaker:Her hair was perfect.
Speaker:I mean the whack,
Speaker:her hair just came off.
Speaker:There was no resistance,
Speaker:anything. This video though,
Speaker:show when we were having issues and we didn't cut anything.
Speaker:It's four hours long Video was meant as a training video
Speaker:to people doing the services to show them,
Speaker:okay, this is what can go wrong.
Speaker:Here's what you do about it.
Speaker:Absolutely. When we did talk about any products at all,
Speaker:so it was not product specific.
Speaker:It was very much about technique situations.
Speaker:You know,
Speaker:when your client is sweaty,
Speaker:what do you do when you have a man who's never
Speaker:had a wax before?
Speaker:What do you do?
Speaker:What does it mean when they bleed?
Speaker:Okay. Gift biz listeners.
Speaker:I want to stop right here because this is a great
Speaker:learning for everybody.
Speaker:You may not be anywhere near,
Speaker:related to this industry,
Speaker:but listen to what Stephanie did.
Speaker:She, first of all,
Speaker:experienced it herself.
Speaker:She did free services so that she could learn and perfect
Speaker:a very more specialty craft because it's a seven minute technique.
Speaker:So she learned all that.
Speaker:She got it down.
Speaker:She saw that there was an opportunity to create her own
Speaker:product and then even from there.
Speaker:So this is the point I want to get at for
Speaker:any of you who are creating products of any type.
Speaker:She even saw the opportunity to expand it further by training
Speaker:videos. So what is it that you're doing if you're a
Speaker:jewelry designer or you're a Baker,
Speaker:is there any opportunity in your industry to create training videos,
Speaker:technique, demonstration,
Speaker:love, love,
Speaker:love where she's talking about like,
Speaker:Oh my gosh,
Speaker:here's all the things that can go wrong.
Speaker:And here is your solution.
Speaker:Can you apply that to your business?
Speaker:And is there anything that you could be doing that could
Speaker:lead you to the success that Stephanie's now seeing?
Speaker:Because she has multiple areas of revenue now,
Speaker:because she's got all these different streams of services and products
Speaker:that she has.
Speaker:So Stephanie,
Speaker:I'm sorry.
Speaker:I just had to jump in there and say that because
Speaker:I think that could be very eyeopening to a lot of
Speaker:people who are listening here right now.
Speaker:Absolutely. And I think part of it is,
Speaker:is that we get it entrepreneurs,
Speaker:we get so,
Speaker:so focused on one thing and I'm learning,
Speaker:you know,
Speaker:and I learned very early on,
Speaker:I have to have multiple streams of income.
Speaker:I also can't be everywhere all of the time.
Speaker:I can't travel all over.
Speaker:When someone wants me or a company wants me or a
Speaker:person wants me,
Speaker:I really can't do that.
Speaker:So the training that we offer and all of our training,
Speaker:we've gone away from DVDs.
Speaker:About three years ago,
Speaker:all of our training is online.
Speaker:I have classroom portals.
Speaker:I have opportunities where people can rent videos.
Speaker:If they don't want to buy it,
Speaker:they can just rent it.
Speaker:They can be in our group,
Speaker:which is a private video room where they can watch all
Speaker:the videos that I have as many times as they want.
Speaker:And that's all done virtual.
Speaker:So whenever someone has a problem,
Speaker:they either email us or they give us a call,
Speaker:but that is a huge revenue stream for us.
Speaker:Because if you want more training outside of the basic training,
Speaker:because I do basic training kind of teasers on YouTube.
Speaker:So I have a huge YouTube following.
Speaker:I have over a million views.
Speaker:I have over 200 videos,
Speaker:but I have a section that's just training on my wax
Speaker:is only so that's kind of the intro,
Speaker:but there,
Speaker:they can get even more training with me on their iPhone
Speaker:or iPad or on their computer.
Speaker:And I'm talking to them and that's all done virtual.
Speaker:So as soon as they sign up and they pay their
Speaker:money, I pop up right on the screen and I'm talking
Speaker:to them,
Speaker:telling them what they need to do.
Speaker:So it's,
Speaker:it's really become multiple streams of income.
Speaker:So we have our training aspect,
Speaker:we have the products available.
Speaker:We also have,
Speaker:you know,
Speaker:one-on-one, I have a storefront where people come in and talk
Speaker:to me and they spend money with me here.
Speaker:And then I have a company that buy our wax in
Speaker:cases, I'm actually looking at two pounds right now that's over
Speaker:2000 pounds of wax that we're getting ready to ship out
Speaker:to them.
Speaker:So it's become an opportunity for me to expand,
Speaker:not only myself and the,
Speaker:but I also have gone to distributors.
Speaker:So I,
Speaker:people below us who sell our products,
Speaker:but who also sell our training.
Speaker:So that's kind of the second tier to my whole little
Speaker:pyramid here is that our distributors are located in areas that
Speaker:I'm not.
Speaker:So I'm in Texas.
Speaker:So we have a distributor that's in Boston.
Speaker:They also have a school.
Speaker:So they train in their beauty school on all of my
Speaker:products. So when those students leave,
Speaker:they're already trained and then they go to salons and then
Speaker:they're excited and they bring our product to the salons as
Speaker:well. So it's a very interesting dynamic of how my parts
Speaker:get out there,
Speaker:especially when I start from the beginning.
Speaker:So when people walk into that school,
Speaker:they see my brand already.
Speaker:Sure. So talk to us a little bit about how the
Speaker:whole distribution started.
Speaker:We know,
Speaker:when did you identify that and how,
Speaker:like, what were the steps that you took to get that
Speaker:established? So distribution is very difficult.
Speaker:I will say.
Speaker:And, and in the beginning I was not very particular about
Speaker:who sold the product,
Speaker:but now I am,
Speaker:because I find that people just don't respect it.
Speaker:If they don't know that it's very important distribution because they
Speaker:are not me specifically.
Speaker:It's not my baby,
Speaker:but they also want to generate income.
Speaker:It can be hard on two folds.
Speaker:I liked someone in a company that's already educating.
Speaker:I've gone with companies that don't educate and all I do
Speaker:with sell and their sales,
Speaker:aren't very high because I want that environment of education and
Speaker:excitement is that now a prerequisite.
Speaker:I did the prerequisite.
Speaker:Yeah. You have to have a training platform already for us
Speaker:to go into,
Speaker:you have to have the opportunity to have someone on the
Speaker:phone that actually knows about waxing.
Speaker:So we have lots of aestheticians that come up to us
Speaker:and they kind of,
Speaker:they hear my story because I have a wonderful series.
Speaker:So if you ever,
Speaker:you know,
Speaker:those of you are listening,
Speaker:everyone is listening to my story and a little bit longer.
Speaker:I have a YouTube channel and it's called Stephanie wanes,
Speaker:but my it's called the wax class.
Speaker:And I do it in the same style as Oprah does
Speaker:that she does.
Speaker:And then I can't remember what she did,
Speaker:but it's just a black screen and I'm just talking.
Speaker:And each segment is on my journey from what I talked
Speaker:about in the beginning of this podcast,
Speaker:all the way to where I am now.
Speaker:So I talk about situations where I've had inappropriate clients,
Speaker:how I've gotten out of that,
Speaker:how I've had a man approach me for something other than
Speaker:waxing. So I really spell it out in each episodes and
Speaker:there's six episodes.
Speaker:So you can watch it.
Speaker:And they're about 30 minutes long,
Speaker:but I really share my story,
Speaker:but I also share my passion for what I do because
Speaker:I still do the service.
Speaker:And I find that when I meet entrepreneurs who have stepped
Speaker:away from what they love to take more of the business
Speaker:side of it,
Speaker:they become very antsy.
Speaker:They're not very social.
Speaker:They're very short,
Speaker:they're very snippy.
Speaker:And I have to kind of go back and say,
Speaker:well, what was it that got you into this in the
Speaker:beginning? Weren't you doing it?
Speaker:Well, yeah,
Speaker:it didn't find time,
Speaker:but you know that now that you're so far removed,
Speaker:you, you really don't know what's going on in the industry
Speaker:and what you're doing really good.
Speaker:A disconnect.
Speaker:Yeah. You,
Speaker:you do,
Speaker:you get very disconnected from your customer.
Speaker:So you really don't know.
Speaker:Plus, you know,
Speaker:things change other products come on the market,
Speaker:or there are other needs based on just the world changing
Speaker:or whatever.
Speaker:So if you don't stay in touch with your customer,
Speaker:that's a really risky situation.
Speaker:So I'm glad you brought that up.
Speaker:Stephanie really good.
Speaker:And the thing is,
Speaker:She was at,
Speaker:you know,
Speaker:it's not that I have to wax every day.
Speaker:I still whacked when I go to trade shows and still
Speaker:wax when I do training.
Speaker:But I find it,
Speaker:the balance has to still be there.
Speaker:People trust me because they see me using it.
Speaker:I don't have a spokesperson.
Speaker:I don't have anyone,
Speaker:but I do my Periscopes sometimes to see my daughter weren't
Speaker:around in the background or you hear my husband over there,
Speaker:coughing and choking.
Speaker:So I really make it very,
Speaker:and he does it often,
Speaker:but I make it very realistic when I'm speaking to them
Speaker:and encouraging them and say,
Speaker:you know,
Speaker:if I had someone like myself,
Speaker:when I was at the point that you were,
Speaker:I went out and made the same mistakes,
Speaker:I would have wasted this amount of money on something that
Speaker:I knew wasn't going to work.
Speaker:I would not have done the things that I've done.
Speaker:And so when I do my Periscopes,
Speaker:I make it very realistic.
Speaker:I bring them into the shop and say,
Speaker:this is what it looks like behind the scenes.
Speaker:This is what it looks like.
Speaker:When you make your company makes a million dollars.
Speaker:You don't see a million dollars.
Speaker:You don't have a million dollars.
Speaker:You know,
Speaker:people get stuck on the dollar amount.
Speaker:Oh, we generated this much.
Speaker:No you didn't.
Speaker:Right. You didn't do that.
Speaker:So my thing,
Speaker:this, my theme this year for our Periscopes has been how
Speaker:much money are you really making?
Speaker:Are you paying yourself?
Speaker:We as entrepreneurs do not pay ourselves,
Speaker:we are so bad at the business side.
Speaker:We really are.
Speaker:I really,
Speaker:at early onset,
Speaker:I have to have money that doesn't have anything to do
Speaker:with the business.
Speaker:And once I started paying myself,
Speaker:I was not as stressed.
Speaker:I was not as freaked out.
Speaker:I wasn't all obsessed about that next dollar coming in.
Speaker:I really was okay,
Speaker:because Stephanie Lane's big account has money in it.
Speaker:Now smooth skins apply can go to negative,
Speaker:but Stephanie Lane's account has money.
Speaker:So it really became a different aspect for me.
Speaker:You know,
Speaker:I'm always encouraging entrepreneurs,
Speaker:pay yourself.
Speaker:You go,
Speaker:if you don't know how to do taxes,
Speaker:you get a company and you pay them to pay you.
Speaker:They take care of your taxes,
Speaker:your social security,
Speaker:your disability,
Speaker:all those things that we don't know,
Speaker:pay them that because you can write off at the end
Speaker:of the year,
Speaker:but get a check.
Speaker:Whether it's once a week,
Speaker:every other week,
Speaker:once a month,
Speaker:pay yourself from the beginning.
Speaker:Don't wait until you think you have enough money in the
Speaker:bank. Nope.
Speaker:Nope. Nope.
Speaker:Pay yourself first.
Speaker:And that's been something that I've always been passionate about,
Speaker:but I didn't do,
Speaker:now that I'm doing it,
Speaker:I wish I would have done it in the beginning because
Speaker:I think my business would have been a lot farther.
Speaker:I would not have been robbing Peter to pay Paul.
Speaker:Right. You know,
Speaker:I did the credit card thing.
Speaker:I wrapped up my credit cards.
Speaker:You know,
Speaker:I've been audited by the IRS.
Speaker:I mean,
Speaker:I have had a lot of financial issues and it wasn't
Speaker:until I separated and really paid myself and wasn't snatching money
Speaker:out of the business account that I really started to grow.
Speaker:Because you know,
Speaker:you have to think about it.
Speaker:If you don't know how much money you're making,
Speaker:if you don't know your margins,
Speaker:if don't know how much your bills are,
Speaker:if you run everything on a credit card,
Speaker:but never paid the credit card,
Speaker:your business will never succeed.
Speaker:And that is something that I love Marcus Limonus.
Speaker:And you know,
Speaker:we've talked about this before and when we taught it before,
Speaker:I love what he says.
Speaker:And he always asks every business that he's in.
Speaker:Part of are you paying yourself?
Speaker:Because it's important when you have the mindset of I'm not
Speaker:worried about the money.
Speaker:I'm not worried about bills on my personal side because there's
Speaker:money in that account.
Speaker:I can focus a hundred percent when I'm in the office
Speaker:on the business,
Speaker:because I don't have to focus on the money part of
Speaker:it. You're absolutely singing my song because so many people,
Speaker:you know,
Speaker:the, the viewers or listeners of this show are all artists
Speaker:creators. And it's so easy for us to diminish the value
Speaker:of our time.
Speaker:And we don't,
Speaker:we don't necessarily price our products correctly.
Speaker:And I mean,
Speaker:that's a whole,
Speaker:this is a whole other bucket of information that we could
Speaker:be sharing,
Speaker:but I'm glad you brought that up because it is,
Speaker:you have to think of pain yourself as just another business
Speaker:expense. That is a necessity and not something that you can
Speaker:just dive into and say,
Speaker:Oh, I just won't pay myself this month because all of
Speaker:your passion,
Speaker:all of your energy,
Speaker:all the time and commitment and money that you've put in
Speaker:to create something isn't going to last long-term.
Speaker:I mean,
Speaker:at some point,
Speaker:if there's no money,
Speaker:you're going to have to stop doing what you're doing.
Speaker:So you need to look at a salary for yourself as
Speaker:a business expense.
Speaker:And I say,
Speaker:even if it's a hundred dollars and I think that's the
Speaker:thing with us,
Speaker:we get so stuck on money and we get stuck on
Speaker:the value of money.
Speaker:Meaning the more money I make,
Speaker:the bigger my company is,
Speaker:and that's not really what it's about.
Speaker:We go into business because we don't want to be told
Speaker:what to do.
Speaker:We don't want our ideas taken from other people.
Speaker:We don't want to have to justify what we want to
Speaker:do as being successful.
Speaker:We want to be and feel and do everything that we
Speaker:want with no restraints.
Speaker:However, when you include yourself as part as income and you
Speaker:don't price things,
Speaker:right? You pay the price for it down the road.
Speaker:And that's something that I have done.
Speaker:I didn't realize I could go to my manufacturers and demand
Speaker:a lower price.
Speaker:I didn't start doing that to,
Speaker:after I watched the profit,
Speaker:I was like,
Speaker:how is he going to walk in there and give them
Speaker:a number?
Speaker:And so last year I tried it with one of my
Speaker:manufacturers and I showed them the numbers.
Speaker:I said,
Speaker:I want this number down for this product to this.
Speaker:Can you do it?
Speaker:We went back and forth.
Speaker:We went back and forth and they were like,
Speaker:well, no,
Speaker:we can get it to this.
Speaker:Nope. If you can get to that,
Speaker:you can get to that.
Speaker:We're talking 30 cents.
Speaker:Right. Right.
Speaker:And they came back and they said,
Speaker:well, you know something about minimums.
Speaker:I said,
Speaker:I don't want a minimum.
Speaker:I don't,
Speaker:I don't need a minimum.
Speaker:I have distributors.
Speaker:We're growing.
Speaker:They're buying more.
Speaker:But that's the number I want.
Speaker:I got it.
Speaker:Good for you.
Speaker:So surprised.
Speaker:I was like,
Speaker:Oh my God.
Speaker:Yeah. And you know,
Speaker:you never know what their limit is until you push it,
Speaker:you know,
Speaker:once you,
Speaker:and once you see,
Speaker:let's say,
Speaker:let's say they couldn't have gone to that.
Speaker:Right. Then maybe would have negotiated something different.
Speaker:Maybe you wouldn't have,
Speaker:but unless you try,
Speaker:you just don't know.
Speaker:And the thing is,
Speaker:is I wanted to stay with them and I was looking
Speaker:at other manufacturers.
Speaker:But as you know,
Speaker:when you manufacture it,
Speaker:there's a relationship.
Speaker:There. I,
Speaker:it took me 10 generations with three products.
Speaker:So 10 generation means when I give it to them,
Speaker:I don't like it.
Speaker:I send it back.
Speaker:I tell them to change it.
Speaker:I did that 10 times on one product and I have
Speaker:three. I really did not want to take that same product
Speaker:to another manufacturer.
Speaker:And it may not be the same.
Speaker:I wanted to continue to work with them.
Speaker:Right. So I told them that I said,
Speaker:but I'll have other options I can go to,
Speaker:you know that.
Speaker:So just know that upfront before you say no again,
Speaker:I don't have a problem with,
Speaker:with, you know,
Speaker:canceling my orders that I have now and going with this
Speaker:other manufacturer.
Speaker:And that kinda got them like,
Speaker:Oh, she's serious.
Speaker:I'm very serious.
Speaker:All I'm asking for is 30 cents different.
Speaker:And you can't give that to me because if you can't,
Speaker:we're done,
Speaker:you lost all of that revenue that you've been making these
Speaker:last few years.
Speaker:So it became eyeopening to me when I started going back
Speaker:to them and saying,
Speaker:okay, what can I do to get it cheaper?
Speaker:So that my margins are bigger.
Speaker:Once I started looking at my margins,
Speaker:like I have a certain products now that my margins are
Speaker:three and 400%.
Speaker:And you know,
Speaker:you look at it and you're like,
Speaker:why didn't I do this in the beginning?
Speaker:Why did I never not sit down and know my numbers?
Speaker:Why did I never quite not get that?
Speaker:You know,
Speaker:I've been working for free.
Speaker:Okay. And I want to stop here to now give biz
Speaker:listeners understand that when Stephanie's talking about margins on her individual
Speaker:products, that is not all the business expense.
Speaker:So her margins of 300% per se,
Speaker:out of that down the road comes rent,
Speaker:cost of travel cost of trade show.
Speaker:So that's not all,
Speaker:I mean,
Speaker:there's so much more than just what your PR,
Speaker:how much your product costs to produce,
Speaker:and then what you sell for,
Speaker:because there's all these other business expenses as well,
Speaker:which is why you want to get your margins on your
Speaker:product as high as they can,
Speaker:because it's not just pure pass through,
Speaker:right into an account of money that you can spend.
Speaker:You know,
Speaker:because we have some people who are just in the beginning
Speaker:of their journey.
Speaker:So I just wanted to point that out as well.
Speaker:Stephanie, we could go on and talk about so many things.
Speaker:You are just a wealth of information,
Speaker:but I think we're going to have to start winding it
Speaker:closer to the end here.
Speaker:And I want to evolve into our reflection section.
Speaker:This is another look at you,
Speaker:also, how you work your business,
Speaker:what types of things you've done that have helped you to
Speaker:get to where you are right now.
Speaker:If there is a trait that you see yourself calling on
Speaker:time and time again,
Speaker:that applies to your business,
Speaker:what would that be?
Speaker:My tree has been really balanced and I save it.
Speaker:And a lot of people can't do it,
Speaker:but I'm gonna be very honest.
Speaker:It took me a little while to do it.
Speaker:I had a business mentor.
Speaker:Coach told me you're going to have to let the emails
Speaker:go off your,
Speaker:your phone.
Speaker:So you're not doing any business on your phone,
Speaker:outside of the office.
Speaker:Everything emails,
Speaker:phone calls,
Speaker:all stay here.
Speaker:So when you're here,
Speaker:you're here,
Speaker:but when you're home,
Speaker:You're home.
Speaker:You mean personal emails,
Speaker:No business emails,
Speaker:business emails do not go to my phone.
Speaker:Nope. I have no idea what's going on when I'm at
Speaker:home. I don't answer emails.
Speaker:I know that's not to say that I pop up on
Speaker:my laptop and I'll refresh and then I'll close it back,
Speaker:but I don't do any business at home.
Speaker:And that's a trait that has really helped me because I
Speaker:was not a mom at home.
Speaker:I was not a wife at home.
Speaker:I was Stephanie Lane's business CEO at home.
Speaker:And once I cut off from my phone,
Speaker:I don't answer any emails at home.
Speaker:I don't do anything business.
Speaker:I may look at something,
Speaker:but I cut it off my messenger on my phone,
Speaker:on the business.
Speaker:Cause I have two separate Facebooks.
Speaker:I have a personal Facebook and then I have a business
Speaker:Facebook, which was great.
Speaker:I separated them out.
Speaker:So I get messages on that business line all day,
Speaker:long, 30 to 40,
Speaker:I turn it off.
Speaker:Begins is completely off.
Speaker:I don't answer any messages,
Speaker:nothing. How far into your journey were you able to start
Speaker:doing that?
Speaker:Because what I,
Speaker:what I find is is that I did not have any
Speaker:turn off time.
Speaker:I was working at home 12 hours in a full day.
Speaker:So I would leave here after working six hours and go
Speaker:home and work another six hours.
Speaker:I wasn't functioning on both ends.
Speaker:It wasn't best for the business.
Speaker:And it also wasn't really great for my personal life.
Speaker:So the balance for me has been great.
Speaker:Now in the beginning as new entrepreneurs,
Speaker:you're going to work all of the time.
Speaker:It's just finding that balance.
Speaker:You know,
Speaker:if you can't let go of your emails at home,
Speaker:can you not answer your emails until the next day?
Speaker:Is it,
Speaker:is it have to be answered at 10 o'clock that night?
Speaker:No. So is there a tool or something that you're using
Speaker:to help you be as productive as possible?
Speaker:I calendar everything.
Speaker:I used to plan out every hour and I can't do
Speaker:that anymore just because things happen,
Speaker:but my calendar is great.
Speaker:My reminders are great and I use the iPhone.
Speaker:So I'm always on my iPhone,
Speaker:scheduling everything.
Speaker:And that's a Google calendar.
Speaker:I will schedule if I need to come in and do
Speaker:a brainstorm on a project that has to be done.
Speaker:I scheduled out an hour.
Speaker:I put it in.
Speaker:So scheduling my day has been something that I love to
Speaker:do. I always go to that schedule,
Speaker:but I always need reminders.
Speaker:And I love to do 30 minutes before an hour before
Speaker:I even had payroll reminder,
Speaker:just making sure that it's on the calendar,
Speaker:because if it's on my calendar,
Speaker:that mean I'm going to do it as a task.
Speaker:I'm going to get it done.
Speaker:If it's not on my calendar,
Speaker:out of sight,
Speaker:out of mind,
Speaker:if you're a paper calendar person and you need a scheduling
Speaker:your hands,
Speaker:keep a schedule in your hands.
Speaker:If you need to have it,
Speaker:have it for a year and not have it for a
Speaker:month, organize tasks,
Speaker:writing them down.
Speaker:I agree because it also reduced,
Speaker:This is your stress because you don't have to remember it
Speaker:anymore. It's in the calendar it's written down.
Speaker:Absolutely. Is there a book or any guidance that you've listened
Speaker:to that helps you to stay motivated and be energized and
Speaker:learn more about your business?
Speaker:It's not even about my business.
Speaker:I find I'm very fascinated by learning.
Speaker:What other business people do.
Speaker:I love to read Forbes.
Speaker:I love to read there's another interview magazine and I'm on
Speaker:magazine. Not necessarily books,
Speaker:cause I don't really have time for books like that,
Speaker:but I love reading articles about other businesses and what people
Speaker:do who are very successful.
Speaker:That may not be the normal.
Speaker:I don't know if it's the norm,
Speaker:but I'm right with you.
Speaker:I love hearing what other people do because if they're successful,
Speaker:then they have some clues for us.
Speaker:That's for sure.
Speaker:Definitely. I would like you now to dare to dream.
Speaker:I want to present you with a virtual gift.
Speaker:It's a magical box containing unlimited possibilities for your future.
Speaker:This is your dream or your goal of almost unreachable Heights
Speaker:that you would wish to obtain.
Speaker:Please accept this gift and open it in our presence.
Speaker:What is inside your box?
Speaker:Time is inside my box And what is happening with that
Speaker:time? That time is unlimited.
Speaker:There's no limit on time.
Speaker:The focusing on not what I'm doing yesterday or what I
Speaker:am going to do,
Speaker:but being able to focus on the time that I have
Speaker:right now,
Speaker:because I'm always a year or two ahead,
Speaker:but I'm not here today at nine 16 on November 14,
Speaker:You tend to drift into the future for goal setting and
Speaker:all of that.
Speaker:So you want time to live in the day in the
Speaker:moment. Absolutely got it.
Speaker:And that to me is something that I think a lot
Speaker:of entrepreneurs do.
Speaker:We dream ahead.
Speaker:We dream.
Speaker:When we already have that success,
Speaker:we already dream where we're able to pay a bill and
Speaker:not even have to worry about it or not look at
Speaker:our bank account every hour,
Speaker:right at our big Academy,
Speaker:You know,
Speaker:and let's face it so much of our time is spent
Speaker:in building towards a goal.
Speaker:We should be enjoying the journey because the Mo the majority
Speaker:of the time is in the path to your goal.
Speaker:And guess what happens when you get to the goal?
Speaker:You set another one right.
Speaker:Far, even farther out.
Speaker:So enjoy where you are.
Speaker:Every step along the way,
Speaker:even people who are just starting,
Speaker:that's such a fun place to be because there's no groundwork
Speaker:laid. There's nothing happening yet.
Speaker:And you can really dream of what it is you want
Speaker:to do.
Speaker:And then when you get started,
Speaker:reality sets in,
Speaker:but you've started,
Speaker:you're creating something.
Speaker:So there's something positive and there are challenges every step of
Speaker:the way.
Speaker:So once we get comfortable with that and just live in
Speaker:the moment and enjoy and be grateful for what we're doing,
Speaker:it really helps your mindset.
Speaker:They really does.
Speaker:That's a great question.
Speaker:Okay. Gift biz listeners,
Speaker:you all know that there was a show notes page.
Speaker:I'm going to have all of the links to Stephanie's different

Speaker:my Facebook,
Speaker:and you can see anything in there.
Speaker:I have Periscopes in there that I have recorded that I

Speaker:but Stephanie has done such a great job in really laying
Speaker:out her path and her journey.
Speaker:So I want to keep all of this in here.
Speaker:I'm not editing anything out because I think the really important
Speaker:thing for us all to learn is one step leads to
Speaker:another leads to another leads to another,
Speaker:and having the experience and learning along the way is so
Speaker:important and really lays the groundwork to being successful.
