Welcome back to the Podcast, where we ask the question, “What makes you happy.” My guest today is a motivational speaker who helps people find passion and purpose in their career. Zack Ballinger from Atlanta, Georgia, United States. How're you doing?
Zack Ballinger:I'm doing Well. How about you, Jake?
Jake Pearson:Yes, fantastic. Thank you, And I’m really excited to have you here, to talk about all things that do make you happy. So, Zack tell me, what does make you happy?
Zack Ballinger:Jake. It's my passion. And one of the things that I'm most passionate about is Career Development. And what I've been able to do is, help so many students and professionals across the United States really change their career. So, they may be in a career that they don't like, or that they don't enjoy doing. You know, 70% of Americans, according to a recent Gallup Poll, do not like their jobs. If you think about that, that's an overwhelming number 7 out of 10 people, do not like their jobs. And there are students out there, trying to decide what to major in, they may not be sure what career capacities go down.
But when I hear these inspirational stories about how my advice or my encouragement is given them a path of passion, where they can find something that they actually love and enjoy in their career. It's no greater feeling before. And then another passion of mine, just to quickly end it out, is that I love what I do. I love teaching, I love motivating. I love helping people through Books and Podcasts, to find a career that's fulfilling to them. We don't have long life. But you know, the average American lives to be about 77, 78 years old. And if you think about that, and the average life, we don't have that long, we never know when it's going to end. Why not enjoy, doing a career that we love? And that's what, makes me happy.
Jake Pearson:When did you realize that made you happy? When was, there a day that you just went? Well, I love this.
Zack Ballinger:You know, I think for me, it was after hearing a devastating medical diagnosis that I got from my doctors. And when I was 15 years old. And then when I got to be about 25 years old, I was diagnosed with a severe form of Ménière’s disease, which if your audience doesn't know, it's an Auditory problem. And so I've lost actually half of my hearing. And I continue to lose more each day. And the doctor actually told me to sign up for disability and stop work, and stay at home. And I said, “No.” that I would change that path, that I would enjoy what I'm doing. And then, I would focus on that. So, I think for me, Jake, it was that Medical Diagnosis that kind of shook me up a little bit in life.
Jake Pearson:It's so great that you sort of took that moment, that could have really had altered your life. And you took it and you spend it the way you wanted to spend it. You took control of that. Yes. So, thank you for sharing that. So, if one of our audience members, you know that if they came up to you in stream and say.
“Zack, can I have a chat with you for a second?”
And they got talking about their happiness? And they told you that they were struggling? What would you say to them?
Zack Ballinger:Yes, you know, I think we all become un-happy for different reasons in life. And you know, I don't want to say, that everything is Sunshine and Rainbows and Light. That's certainly not true. But it depends on what season you're going through in life. And if somebody came up to me and, for example, was un-happy in their career, I would definitely put them in the direction of my books. The recent book that I just published was “Don’t be a Zombie: How to find a career you love.” It's a roadmap, a step-by-step guide to find passion for your life and your career. And then, I would turn them to my Podcast, it’s free. And there's multiple careers out there in North America that we maybe, have not discovered or maybe around the world we don't know about. And so, the Career Library gives folks a chance to find something that they really enjoy doing.
Jake Pearson:Wonderful. Thank you, Zack, we really do appreciate your time and insight into “What does make you happy.” Thank you so much for sharing that.
