Hi there.
Speaker:It's Sue.
Speaker:And thanks for joining me for tips and talk day.
Speaker:These are bite-sized topics that I pull from community questions and
Speaker:things that I'm observing in the world of handmade small business.
Speaker:If you'd like to submit a topic,
Speaker:DME, over on Instagram at gift biz unwrapped,
Speaker:we are going to talk about what you should and should
Speaker:not be doing with your logo.
Speaker:It seems pretty obvious,
Speaker:right? But I think there going to be some things here
Speaker:that you haven't thought of before you have created your logo,
Speaker:you've aligned it with the brand and the feel you've selected
Speaker:the colors that you want,
Speaker:your not using clip art,
Speaker:you're using original art and images and everything set,
Speaker:and you are so proud of your logo.
Speaker:It is looking exactly how you want it to look now,
Speaker:where do you do?
Speaker:Where do you put the logo and what should you more
Speaker:importantly, even not do with your logo?
Speaker:That's what we're talking about today.
Speaker:There are some obvious places where you're going to insert your
Speaker:logo. You're going to think automatically,
Speaker:well, I'm going to put it on all the virtuals.
Speaker:So everywhere you're online,
Speaker:you're going to replace out any old logo you have,
Speaker:or if you're brand new in business,
Speaker:these are all places where you'll want to put your logo,
Speaker:the website,
Speaker:all of your social media platforms.
Speaker:And if you've been in business for a while,
Speaker:go back and look because you might forget where your logo
Speaker:is. I just recently changed up my podcast logo this past
Speaker:summer. Some of you might've been along the journey with me
Speaker:and helped me actually select that final image for my podcast.
Speaker:I'm still finding even to this day,
Speaker:there are some things out there that have my old logo.
Speaker:And when I happen upon them,
Speaker:I switch them up.
Speaker:So try and find all the specific areas where you had
Speaker:another logo and switch it out.
Speaker:Another place that you're going to want to switch out your
Speaker:logo is your email footer.
Speaker:And if you're not using your logo in the footer of
Speaker:your email,
Speaker:this would be a time then to add that in even
Speaker:your personal emails,
Speaker:I would suggest that you put your logo in because there
Speaker:are people who are friends or people that you'll interact with,
Speaker:who may not know about your business.
Speaker:What if you reconnect with a high school friend from years
Speaker:past, and now you're communicating via email.
Speaker:They may not know what you're doing and they could potentially
Speaker:be a customer.
Speaker:So don't forget those email footers.
Speaker:Also, of course,
Speaker:you're going to change your product labels.
Speaker:Now, what do you do with product that's already labeled?
Speaker:And it's the old label,
Speaker:depending on how much you have.
Speaker:It's a judgment call.
Speaker:If you have just a little inventory left,
Speaker:then go ahead and leave it and sell out of it.
Speaker:Obviously that's the first that would go.
Speaker:But if you have a lot of inventory,
Speaker:then you may want to relabel it.
Speaker:Even if your doesn't expire,
Speaker:you don't want it to look like it's old.
Speaker:The other thing you want to look at is anywhere where
Speaker:you're in person.
Speaker:If you do craft shows,
Speaker:that would be the show banners,
Speaker:business cards.
Speaker:Definitely. You're going to want to switch up.
Speaker:And honestly,
Speaker:you can do those right away.
Speaker:Seriously on Vista print.
Speaker:What is it?
Speaker:$20 for 250 cards.
Speaker:And then any brochures also switch them up.
Speaker:I'm going to say all of this is pretty obvious.
Speaker:Now we're going to get into another level.
Speaker:And this is wholesale.
Speaker:If you're out at shows because you're placing product in other
Speaker:stores, we give out pens or other types of things,
Speaker:you know,
Speaker:little chotchkies,
Speaker:if you will,
Speaker:those you're going to want to update immediately because remember your
Speaker:logo is how people recognize your business.
Speaker:If there's a disconnect there,
Speaker:they may question your brand.
Speaker:If you're out at shows or in a shop,
Speaker:how about staff shirts,
Speaker:putting your logo on t-shirts or even nicer shirts and having
Speaker:your staff wear them,
Speaker:maybe not all the time,
Speaker:but for some occasions also,
Speaker:if you're in a position and you have a business where
Speaker:you're attracting corporate customers.
Speaker:So my gift basket folks out there,
Speaker:if you're presenting to corporations,
Speaker:this may be a place where you would want to show
Speaker:them a logoed mug.
Speaker:So you're using your logo,
Speaker:but you're also showing them what is possible for them,
Speaker:because you can put their logos on their own mugs,
Speaker:to their customers.
Speaker:Okay? These are all places where if you have a brand
Speaker:new logo,
Speaker:places to check where you're going to switch things out.
Speaker:Now it's move into something that you might not have ever
Speaker:considered before.
Speaker:And this is where you should not have your logo,
Speaker:holiday gifts.
Speaker:Okay? And you might say,
Speaker:wait, I have all these mugs.
Speaker:They're so cute.
Speaker:They've got my logo.
Speaker:Everyone's going to love them.
Speaker:I'm going to send them out.
Speaker:It's promoting your brand.
Speaker:It's not necessarily thanking them for their business.
Speaker:Okay. It's just,
Speaker:it almost feels like it's another way for you to sell
Speaker:them. Larger brands can do this easier.
Speaker:I mean,
Speaker:if you think of some of the brands that you follow,
Speaker:maybe you have a water bottle that's from Nike because you
Speaker:work out a lot.
Speaker:You like what they stand for.
Speaker:You've been following them.
Speaker:And so by nature and attaching yourself with a Nike brand,
Speaker:you're attaching yourself to everything that they are,
Speaker:same thing with a charity that you support.
Speaker:And you have a shirt that has the charity name on
Speaker:it. You are associating yourself with that charity because you deeply
Speaker:believe in what they stand for.
Speaker:This is kind of a judgment call for you.
Speaker:But if your small business is known enough,
Speaker:and there are customers of yours who will attach with what
Speaker:you stand for and the,
Speaker:then maybe you do put it on shirts and send it
Speaker:out. Think about this a little bit and what the impact
Speaker:is of your customer.
Speaker:Who's going to be receiving it.
Speaker:And if this is as a gift,
Speaker:thanking them for their business and it's not more of the
Speaker:product you already know they're buying from you.
Speaker:Then I would rethink exactly whether you want to send them
Speaker:logoed product.
Speaker:Now with everything,
Speaker:there's a way to switch this up a little bit so
Speaker:that it can work for you.
Speaker:If you have a logo,
Speaker:that is an image.
Speaker:So for me,
Speaker:I'm the podcast.
Speaker:And over here on gift biz,
Speaker:you know,
Speaker:I have that yellow flower.
Speaker:It's one thing.
Speaker:If I put that yellow flower on a mug,
Speaker:and then it just says,
Speaker:gift biz on wrapped,
Speaker:okay. Cause what am I doing?
Speaker:I'm promoting my podcast and gift biz on wrapped.
Speaker:But if I had that flower,
Speaker:I put it on a mug and then a put some
Speaker:type of a motivational quote that is uplifting.
Speaker:It aligns with the brand and it would mean something to
Speaker:my customers.
Speaker:Then it wouldn't feel so self-serving oh,
Speaker:drink from this mug because it's my podcast.
Speaker:It's drink from this mug because I'm giving you a message
Speaker:that I hope will help you along with your day.
Speaker:And by the way,
Speaker:the logo is still there.
Speaker:That image portion.
Speaker:So subtly,
Speaker:it aligns back to my brand.
Speaker:This would be one way to incorporate your logo where it
Speaker:doesn't seem so self-serving and where your customer will probably use
Speaker:that product.
Speaker:A second way to do this is to offer as a
Speaker:gift, a complimentary product fact that has your logo on it.
Speaker:And what I mean by this,
Speaker:let's say you're a jewelry maker.
Speaker:You get the small jewelry box.
Speaker:So you're going giving them a gift that is in conjunction
Speaker:with the product,
Speaker:but it's not just shouting your company.
Speaker:Another example would be maybe you do some courses online where
Speaker:you're teaching your craft.
Speaker:So then people are naturally using their computer or their phone.
Speaker:When they're interacting with you and your business,
Speaker:then a computer cloth could be in alignment and you can
Speaker:put your logo there.
Speaker:Then another idea,
Speaker:if you're a candle maker,
Speaker:what about the candle?
Speaker:Snuffers those could be really cute also to then add your
Speaker:logo to,
Speaker:you know,
Speaker:it's coming from you,
Speaker:but they're using it in conjunction with a product that they've
Speaker:purchased when you're doing it in that manner.
Speaker:It makes apple salute sense.
Speaker:And it's fine to use your logo on those products as
Speaker:a gift,
Speaker:because it's still utilitarian.
Speaker:If you will combines with your brand,
Speaker:but it's not shouting that it's a self-serving gift.
Speaker:The whole problem with that again is here.
Speaker:Supposedly you're giving a gift out to somebody,
Speaker:but really it's promotional.
Speaker:And it feels like you're just saying buy more from me,
Speaker:buy more from me.
Speaker:In summary,
Speaker:when you have a new logo,
Speaker:you do want to shout it to the world because it's
Speaker:such a powerful identifier.
Speaker:There are places to use it,
Speaker:and there are places not to use it.
Speaker:The places to automatically right away,
Speaker:put up your logo,
Speaker:all your virtual platforms.
Speaker:So website,
Speaker:social media sites also put it on your email,
Speaker:footers, switch out your product labels,
Speaker:or get rid of old product with the old label and
Speaker:then use the new product with a new label.
Speaker:Of course,
Speaker:at craft shows,
Speaker:banners, and he displays that you have,
Speaker:that are logoed in your booth,
Speaker:any brochures,
Speaker:business cards.
Speaker:And then the next level,
Speaker:if you're up into wholesale,
Speaker:what about any items that you have at the booth for
Speaker:them to take away?
Speaker:So pens,
Speaker:magnets, stickers,
Speaker:all those types of things that you have as giveaways.
Speaker:Of course.
Speaker:How about staff t-shirts and then if you're going into corporate
Speaker:people, mugs using your logo,
Speaker:showing them what's possible for them to incorporate their logo for
Speaker:their customers.
Speaker:The place not to do it is holiday gifts.
Speaker:When you're thanking people for their business,
Speaker:because by you giving them a product that has your logo
Speaker:on it,
Speaker:it feels very self-serving and promotional.
Speaker:So all of that effort in creating that gift for them
Speaker:is deflated.
Speaker:I'm not going to say that they're not going to like
Speaker:it, but it's deflated.
Speaker:And we've just gone through ways where you can switch that
Speaker:up. You can put your logo,
Speaker:but put us message that resonates with them.
Speaker:So it's more about them than you or sending a product
Speaker:that has your logo that is complimentary to a product that
Speaker:you already sell.
Speaker:So they can use it in conjunction.
Speaker:My examples were jewelry boxes,
Speaker:cleaning cloths.
Speaker:And then of course like a tool for snuffing handles.
Speaker:You know,
Speaker:I had to get the candle thing in there somewhere along
Speaker:the way,
Speaker:right? And by doing this,
Speaker:you're using that powerful tool that you have of your logo
Speaker:as an identifier for your brand.
Speaker:And it is so impactful.
Speaker:So powerful.
Speaker:You become so memorable when you do it,
Speaker:right. That's a wrap.
Speaker:I'm a get to the point kind of girl.
Speaker:And this is what you can expect from these quick midweek
Speaker:sessions. Now it's your turn go out and fulfill that dream
Speaker:of yours,
Speaker:share your handmade products with us.
Speaker:We want them,
