Catherine:

featuring people from all over the world whose positive, inspiring

Catherine:

imprints are inspiring the world.

Catherine:

These exceptional people are rising to the challenge.

Catherine:

And today I have one of those exceptional people here on the show.

Catherine:

Christopher Marciano.

Catherine:

Hello, Christopher.

Christopher Marciano:

Thank you.

Christopher Marciano:

I'm so excited to be here.

Catherine:

So thrilled to have you here.

Catherine:

And you are one of the youngest assistant principals over in Florida.

Catherine:

You could, you were born in and I'm just going to give a quick introduction

Catherine:

here and we can talk about you.

Catherine:

So you were born in west Africa and you moved over to the states, which

Catherine:

we will learn more about and your English as a second language struggles.

Catherine:

And you compose your own songs, your lyrics.

Catherine:

And so you have genre that you dive into that you share with your students as an

Catherine:

outlet to help them understand the world around them, which I think is so awesome.

Catherine:

I can't wait to hear about that and to hear about some, some of the

Catherine:

music that you have out now and yeah.

Catherine:

You have brought in that music, not only as a person, not only as a

Catherine:

teacher, but as assistant principal.

Catherine:

And now you're sharing your music with the entire world and you're a reading coach.

Catherine:

Which is literacy for those listeners who don't know what a reading coach is.

Catherine:

We're just going to hear so much more about you.

Catherine:

So thank you so much for being here, here on the

Christopher Marciano:

show.

Christopher Marciano:

Oh, it is my pleasure.

Catherine:

Yeah.

Catherine:

So let's start out first with west Africa, you were born out in west Africa.

Catherine:

What part

Christopher Marciano:

so I wasn't born in west Africa.

Christopher Marciano:

I was actually born in Rhode Island which is up north.

Christopher Marciano:

It's a very, very small place.

Christopher Marciano:

I was born Pawtucket.

Christopher Marciano:

My family's from west Africa.

Christopher Marciano:

I had the opportunity of traveling there and they're from Cape Verde islands.

Christopher Marciano:

Not many people know what cape Verde islands consists of but it's

Christopher Marciano:

actually little bits of islands off of the west African coast

Christopher Marciano:

and it's absolutely beautiful.

Christopher Marciano:

It's very rural.

Christopher Marciano:

I wouldn't go there too often because of just how rural it is,

Christopher Marciano:

but it's, it's a beautiful place and they have phenomenal waters.

Christopher Marciano:

So my family, a little by little migrated from there, uh, in order to just find a

Christopher Marciano:

better place to raise their children and find a better place to live their lives.

Christopher Marciano:

My mother is actually from Ivory Coast, Africa, and, uh, her

Christopher Marciano:

family migrated over as well.

Christopher Marciano:

So as I was just surrounded by so many different cultures in Africa.

Christopher Marciano:

And I acquired different languages, such as Cape Verdean,

Christopher Marciano:

which is my first language.

Christopher Marciano:

My mom spoke.

Christopher Marciano:

I know my mom spoke fluent French.

Christopher Marciano:

My mom speaks by the way, just, just to add that little tidbit, my mom

Christopher Marciano:

speaks five different languages.

Christopher Marciano:

Good for her.

Christopher Marciano:

Good for her bad for me, because I grew up like a little confused.

Christopher Marciano:

And when she was upset, she knew how to say it in five different languages.

Christopher Marciano:

So that that just caused a struggle for me going to school because

Christopher Marciano:

of just natural language barrier.

Christopher Marciano:

Tell me about

Catherine:

that language.

Catherine:

Like, can you, do you still speak it?

Christopher Marciano:

Oh, yes.

Catherine:

Oh, well, say your positive imprint.

Christopher Marciano:

Well, (Cape Verdean language.) . So I said, I

Christopher Marciano:

just very happy to be here and I want to say, thank you for having me.

Christopher Marciano:

And I

Catherine:

heard the obrigada.

Catherine:

Portuguese for.

Catherine:

Thank you.

Christopher Marciano:

You are amazing.

Christopher Marciano:

You are awesome.

Christopher Marciano:

So, Cape Verde, I'm just getting into like a whole history lesson.

Christopher Marciano:

Cape Verde was actually colonized by the Portuguese.

Christopher Marciano:

Yes.

Christopher Marciano:

So my language is composed of Portuguese and African dialect, so

Christopher Marciano:

I could understand Portuguese, but when I speak it, it's a hot mess.

Catherine:

Oh, interesting.

Catherine:

Can you read Portuguese?

Christopher Marciano:

I can, I can read Spanish pretty well.

Christopher Marciano:

I'm not quite sure how that happened and I could speak Spanish pretty well.

Christopher Marciano:

Not sure how that happened either.

Christopher Marciano:

But Portuguese it's, it's very similar to my language so I could read it, uh,

Christopher Marciano:

grammatically, they, they moved their words differently than, the accent is a

Christopher Marciano:

little bit more predominant pronounced.

Christopher Marciano:

So, uh, but I could, I could understand that pretty.

Christopher Marciano:

Yeah.

Christopher Marciano:

Yeah.

Christopher Marciano:

So

Catherine:

now you were living in Rhode Island, which is where you schooled.

Christopher Marciano:

Yeah.

Christopher Marciano:

So I went to over 12 different schools.

Christopher Marciano:

I know I moved around quite quite so many times and when I was in

Christopher Marciano:

school or naturally, because I wasn't consistently in school, they put me in

Christopher Marciano:

a speech class because I was just very

Christopher Marciano:

quiet younger child.

Christopher Marciano:

And they thought they were helping me by doing that.

Christopher Marciano:

But I actually felt a little disconnected from my classmates

Christopher Marciano:

because they were pulling me out of class to work with me on my language

Christopher Marciano:

and then putting me back into class.

Christopher Marciano:

And when I came back, I just didn't have the opportunity to develop

Christopher Marciano:

relationships within the classroom.

Christopher Marciano:

So that caused me to shut down a little bit more.

Christopher Marciano:

And that's when I turned into writing, instead of expressing my emotions

Christopher Marciano:

through my words, I wrote it down just so that I could get that outlet.

Christopher Marciano:

And that's where my writing began.

Catherine:

I really appreciate that you talked about how you felt in school

Christopher Marciano:

there's some cases where students will have to,

Christopher Marciano:

you know, receive services, whether it's an exceptional education.

Christopher Marciano:

However, I feel like the relationship between the teacher who is pulling out the

Christopher Marciano:

student and the actual classroom teacher needs to be very tight because together,

Christopher Marciano:

you established that comfortable feeling where when the student comes back, we're

Christopher Marciano:

able to communicate and welcome that student into their classroom family

Christopher Marciano:

where they, they don't feel left out.

Christopher Marciano:

Because when I went to a stranger, I was never introduced to them.

Christopher Marciano:

Didn't know their names.

Christopher Marciano:

I'm working with this person who is pulling me from

Christopher Marciano:

class and I don't know them.

Christopher Marciano:

Whereas with me, when I was a teacher, I introduced those people

Christopher Marciano:

to my students and made sure that they knew, Hey, we're working

Christopher Marciano:

together to give you what you need.

Christopher Marciano:

I'm so excited to have you back in 30 minutes, we're

Christopher Marciano:

going to be here ready for you.

Christopher Marciano:

So that just made them feel comfortable.

Christopher Marciano:

And I felt like that's what, that's what was missing when I was younger.

Christopher Marciano:

Oh, that's

Catherine:

great now.

Catherine:

I mean, not great that that was missing, but that's, that's so

Catherine:

great that you recognized it.

Catherine:

You were able to implement that.

Catherine:

So how did, when you were reading coach, how did that fall into place?

Catherine:

Did the teachers accept your openness.

Christopher Marciano:

Oh, of course not all the time.

Christopher Marciano:

I mean, I I'm very personable, so I have great relationships with

Christopher Marciano:

my teachers, but of course you have certain situations where some

Christopher Marciano:

students are the ones I call them

Christopher Marciano:

the ones that need the most love they could trust some limits, but we just

Christopher Marciano:

have to find creative ways to like music creative ways to really reach them.

Christopher Marciano:

So when I was a reading coach, I absolutely love it because I was

Christopher Marciano:

able to go into the classroom and model how we could do that and with

Christopher Marciano:

my background as being the Dean and behavior and academics go side by side.

Christopher Marciano:

So I was able to come in regularly and with a student and show them,

Christopher Marciano:

Hey, If you try these strategies, the student may be able to be a little more

Christopher Marciano:

comfortable and understand the concept that you're trying to deliver to them.

Christopher Marciano:

So it's all about thinking outside the box.

Christopher Marciano:

And really getting to know the student and reaching them and their

Christopher Marciano:

interest level in a inappropriate way.

Catherine:

Yes, definitely the interest level.

Catherine:

And so you mentioned you were Dean also, what grade level were

Catherine:

you working with with regard?

Catherine:

Was it still element

Christopher Marciano:

the whole school.

Christopher Marciano:

It was pre-K to fifth grade was the toughest year of my life.

Christopher Marciano:

Pre-K to fifth grade.

Christopher Marciano:

And I had we had a unit, several units at my school.

Christopher Marciano:

So several exceptional needs students.

Christopher Marciano:

I learned the most, it was my first year out of the classroom.

Christopher Marciano:

I lasted the entire year and I developed an amazing amount of relationships with

Christopher Marciano:

these kids and the teachers and parents.

Christopher Marciano:

I was very close with my parents because you need to have parents by your side.

Christopher Marciano:

And that just really molded me.

Christopher Marciano:

into the leader that I am now so it's something I keep thinking of.

Christopher Marciano:

It's very rewarding.

Catherine:

Awesome.

Catherine:

When you decided to go into teaching, how old or did you always know

Catherine:

you wanted to go into teaching?

Catherine:

No, you're shaking your head.

Christopher Marciano:

Every my family, my mom still is just like, I can't believe

Christopher Marciano:

you went this route because here I am a Cape Verdean boy, who has grown up going

Christopher Marciano:

to so many different schools struggling in school and I become a teacher.

Christopher Marciano:

I always loved school.

Christopher Marciano:

Don't get me wrong.

Christopher Marciano:

I loved going to school.

Christopher Marciano:

However, I went to school for biology.

Christopher Marciano:

I was going to be a doctor.

Christopher Marciano:

I always knew I was going to be pediatrician.

Christopher Marciano:

I've always loved kids.

Christopher Marciano:

So there was that connection.

Christopher Marciano:

I took my prerequisites for med school.

Christopher Marciano:

I got all of that done and I was ready to go and be a doctor.

Christopher Marciano:

And unfortunately I had a tough situation where and I don't talk so much about

Christopher Marciano:

this, but you are just a positive person, so I can definitely share it.

Christopher Marciano:

But I worked at a resort where I did activities with the kids . , a little one

Christopher Marciano:

who was swimming in the pool with her mom and dad, and went under the water and.

Christopher Marciano:

Didn't drown, but was unconscious.

Christopher Marciano:

So I pulled her out of the water and tilted her to the side and the water

Christopher Marciano:

came out of her mouth, but I was apprehensive about giving her CPR.

Christopher Marciano:

So a guest in the water gave her CPR.

Christopher Marciano:

But since that moment, I kind of, you know, was hard on myself

Christopher Marciano:

because I said, if I couldn't

Christopher Marciano:

give her CPR in that moment, how can I be a doctor?

Christopher Marciano:

And even though they built me up so much, because they said, if you didn't

Christopher Marciano:

tilt her to the side and the water didn't come out of her mouth, you did

Christopher Marciano:

what you were supposed to do, but I still felt like I should have done more.

Christopher Marciano:

And she's alive.

Christopher Marciano:

She's well, like, you know, thanks to God.

Christopher Marciano:

But in that moment I was like, oh, I can't be a doctor.

Christopher Marciano:

So I went home.

Christopher Marciano:

And I opened the college catalog and I was like, what else can I do in this world?

Christopher Marciano:

And just fell on the elementary education.

Christopher Marciano:

I was like, why I like kids.

Christopher Marciano:

I could be a teacher.

Christopher Marciano:

And I literally that following day I went to my university and changed my major.

Christopher Marciano:

Elementary education.

Christopher Marciano:

Wow.

Catherine:

What a story?

Catherine:

Oh my goodness.

Catherine:

And yet don't be hard on yourself our minds do different things in our actions.

Catherine:

We do different things at different

Christopher Marciano:

moments.

Christopher Marciano:

Yeah, exactly.

Christopher Marciano:

I mean, if we, if we could all go back in time, there'll be one thing

Christopher Marciano:

by, we just take what happened and then learn from them and grow.

Christopher Marciano:

Absolutely.

Catherine:

That was kind of a long time

Christopher Marciano:

ago.

Christopher Marciano:

Yes, I was.

Christopher Marciano:

How old was I?

Christopher Marciano:

Probably around 16, 17.

Christopher Marciano:

Nope.

Christopher Marciano:

It was 1718 around there.

Christopher Marciano:

So that's what I was some time ago.

Catherine:

So you were, you were just a teenager

Christopher Marciano:

But that day haunts me so much because you know, you always

Christopher Marciano:

have those thoughts and, and I'm not too hard on myself now,but it took quite some

Christopher Marciano:

time for me to find a positive positivity somewhere else to assure myself, okay,

Christopher Marciano:

you did and what you could in that moment.

Christopher Marciano:

So you

Catherine:

did.

Catherine:

Christopher,.

Catherine:

Thank you for sharing that.

Catherine:

And I know that that was hard for you, so that brings you to elementary ed.

. Christopher Marciano:

I was given so much responsibility my

. Christopher Marciano:

first year and aren't we all?

. Christopher Marciano:

Oh my gosh.

. Christopher Marciano:

I mean, all teachers, I listen, I commend them.

. Christopher Marciano:

I love my teachers.

. Christopher Marciano:

And my first year of teaching was such a great one.

. Christopher Marciano:

It was not the horror stories that everybody would.

. Christopher Marciano:

My first few years of teaching were pretty great.

. Christopher Marciano:

So yes, I.

. Christopher Marciano:

Was always that teacher that thought outside of the box, you would come

. Christopher Marciano:

into my, and I was probably standing on my desk doing crazy accents, for my

. Christopher Marciano:

students, my students were probably on the floor rolling, laughing, but we had,

. Christopher Marciano:

you know, our time where we had fun.

. Christopher Marciano:

And we had our times that we worked, we worked, we worked,

. Christopher Marciano:

we worked, my class was top 10%.

. Christopher Marciano:

They had top 10% in Florida, also the top 10% teacher in Florida for

. Christopher Marciano:

reading and math two years in a row.

. Christopher Marciano:

And.

. Christopher Marciano:

I wish I could tell you I did everything that they told me to

. Christopher Marciano:

do, but I literally had to think outside of the box and learn my kids.

. Christopher Marciano:

I took so much time to really learning each and every single

. Christopher Marciano:

one of my students to reach them.

. Christopher Marciano:

And in ways that I wish I was reached when I was younger, and

. Christopher Marciano:

that was crucial and important.

. Christopher Marciano:

and I've seen students who were so low and who have flourished to

. Christopher Marciano:

who they are today, and it excites me because I know kids can do it.

Catherine:

Oh, my gosh.

Catherine:

Absolutely.

Catherine:

We just need to set that bar up above their head and not....

Catherine:

Yes.

Catherine:

The lower the bar is set, then they that's all they'll do.

Catherine:

And that's the same with us, you know, as adults.

Catherine:

You know, so we need something to strive for.

Catherine:

We don't want to just strive for

Christopher Marciano:

mediocrity.

Christopher Marciano:

Exactly.

Christopher Marciano:

And we won't push ourselves unless they, someone has set that bar for us.

Christopher Marciano:

You

Catherine:

remind me so much of when I was a teacher and I.

Catherine:

I loved teaching those students.

Catherine:

And I, I keep in touch with so many of them today.

Catherine:

You know, when they're getting married, they're having kids,

Catherine:

they're starting careers.

Christopher Marciano:

Oh, I don't know how you feel about

Christopher Marciano:

it, but I, I cry a little bit.

Christopher Marciano:

Oh, I

Catherine:

get, I get tearful.

Catherine:

I get, yeah.

Catherine:

I spend to keep in touch with them and see what they're doing.

Catherine:

But one of the things that you do is music.

Christopher Marciano:

Yeah.

Christopher Marciano:

Some, I'm an artist.

Christopher Marciano:

I've been a songwriter.

Christopher Marciano:

Actually I started as a songwriter for several years and I just wrote for

Christopher Marciano:

other people, everything I write is about an experience that I went through.

Christopher Marciano:

So I wasn't comfortable being, you know, at the forefront.

Christopher Marciano:

I just wanted everybody else to sing my song.

Christopher Marciano:

So I was like, okay, here, here's a song.

Christopher Marciano:

You sing using my pain, using my happiness, as long as I'm

Christopher Marciano:

getting it out there to everyone.

Christopher Marciano:

It was my therapy.

Christopher Marciano:

Like I, if I had.

Christopher Marciano:

An argument with a friend.

Christopher Marciano:

I went straight to my notebook and started writing and felt a lot better afterwards.

Christopher Marciano:

So I was a songwriter for quite some time.

Christopher Marciano:

And then as a songwriter, and I know many songwriters out there fall in the same

Christopher Marciano:

path where they feel like they're helping artists a lot more than just writing.

Christopher Marciano:

And I love doing that.

Christopher Marciano:

I would give suggestions as far as, oh, you should really go with this song

Christopher Marciano:

and that song, or you should really try having a music video for this song.

Christopher Marciano:

So one of my artists one day, Said, well, how do you know you've

Christopher Marciano:

never been an artist before?

Christopher Marciano:

And I said, you are absolutely right.

Christopher Marciano:

So I came on this whole journey.

Christopher Marciano:

I told myself, okay, become an artist, record a whole album, learn everything

Christopher Marciano:

you need to know about being an artist and then go back to songwriting so that

Christopher Marciano:

you could be the best song writer ever.

Christopher Marciano:

Just like what you said earlier about someone setting that bar for you.

Christopher Marciano:

I felt like I needed to reach that bar..

Christopher Marciano:

So it's perfect that you said that it's like a perfect segue.

Christopher Marciano:

So I became a song writer, uh, as an artist, a little over two years ago.

Christopher Marciano:

And I recorded my first song and someone asked me to perform at their show.

Christopher Marciano:

And I will tell you, as soon as I got on that stage, I was addicted.

Christopher Marciano:

No, I was like, oh, I love that.

Christopher Marciano:

I'm not coming off of this stage.

Christopher Marciano:

Like, I'm here.

Christopher Marciano:

You have to take the microphone away from me.

Christopher Marciano:

I am.

Christopher Marciano:

staying here.

Christopher Marciano:

It started off as just like a, basically a big research project.

Christopher Marciano:

And now I'm loving it.

Christopher Marciano:

I've performed over 18 shows.

Christopher Marciano:

I've opened for some amazing artists.

Christopher Marciano:

I've performed in New York.

Christopher Marciano:

I've performed in Maryland.

Christopher Marciano:

And, and to say that I've only been an artist for a little while, over two

Christopher Marciano:

years, and I've performed that much and have worked with amazing people.

Christopher Marciano:

It's just so humbling.

Christopher Marciano:

And I feel so blessed to be in this opportunity.

Christopher Marciano:

And that's.

Christopher Marciano:

When I began sharing that with my kids as well.

Catherine:

I like this.

Catherine:

So you had this positive imprint in your life that set that bar and from

Catherine:

the one comment, and instead of getting upset, it was criticism that you needed

Catherine:

to hear so that you could go and yeah.

Catherine:

Wow.

Catherine:

Absolutely.

Catherine:

Cool.

Catherine:

So what do you have your students do?

Catherine:

I've seen some of it on online.

Catherine:

Fabulous.

Catherine:

I love it.

Christopher Marciano:

So , I've always, you know, I've always created

Christopher Marciano:

craziest songs when my kids were trying to, you know, do, do their work.

Christopher Marciano:

I would come up with random songs just because just to

Christopher Marciano:

get them happy and laughing.

Christopher Marciano:

But my principal came to me and she came up with this amazing idea

Christopher Marciano:

of having electives at our school.

Christopher Marciano:

And elementary schools don't really have electives.

Christopher Marciano:

So we have our art, we have music, we have PE, but we don't really have electives..

Christopher Marciano:

So she's like, no.

Christopher Marciano:

She is amazing, by the way, she said it's every Wednesday, I want

Christopher Marciano:

kids to do something that they love.

Christopher Marciano:

I want it to be electives where they choose, where, what they'll do.

Christopher Marciano:

And I want yoga classes.

Christopher Marciano:

I want acting classes.

Christopher Marciano:

I want a music class.

Christopher Marciano:

There's she looked, everyone was looking at me at that moment.

Christopher Marciano:

Okay.

Christopher Marciano:

Tell me where, where this going?

Christopher Marciano:

She's like, oh, I figured you can help kids write music and you

Christopher Marciano:

know, it could be really cool.

Christopher Marciano:

And I said, Okay.

Christopher Marciano:

I'm fine with that.

Christopher Marciano:

So I opened up the Tigers Studios, what I call that at my school.

Christopher Marciano:

And I started writing songs with them.

Christopher Marciano:

It started out with me writing a lot of their songs, and then two

Christopher Marciano:

of my kids came one day and I was about to teach them their part.

Christopher Marciano:

And one of them said we kind of wrote something, is it

Christopher Marciano:

okay if we share it with you?

Christopher Marciano:

And I was a little taken aback, I was like, you wrote something and

Christopher Marciano:

she's like, yeah, I just wanted to see what you thought of it.

Christopher Marciano:

But we wrote a little something.

Christopher Marciano:

I was like, okay, okay.

Christopher Marciano:

Let's share it.

Christopher Marciano:

I was expected to, you know, cringe and be a little nervous about it, but

Christopher Marciano:

they blew me away the words rhymed.

Christopher Marciano:

Oh my gosh.

Christopher Marciano:

Yeah.

Christopher Marciano:

Positive imprint.

Christopher Marciano:

Completely.

Christopher Marciano:

They rhymed..

Christopher Marciano:

They were melodically perfect.

Christopher Marciano:

They were on the beat and I was like, oh, we're using this on a song.

Christopher Marciano:

So needless to say, I started stepping back and gave them control, which they

Christopher Marciano:

loved because you know, I could be a little I'm a Virgo . I'm a perfectionist.

Christopher Marciano:

So they started writing the song and then we were done with

Christopher Marciano:

the song within a few weeks.

Christopher Marciano:

So we had all this time on our hands and I was like, what do I do now?

Christopher Marciano:

We're we're completely done?

Christopher Marciano:

What do we do?

Christopher Marciano:

And I said, all right, guys, they're all just staring at me, sitting down,

Christopher Marciano:

like, all right, we recorded the song.

Christopher Marciano:

What?

Christopher Marciano:

Now?

Christopher Marciano:

I was like, let's make a music video.

Christopher Marciano:

And they're like what?

Christopher Marciano:

I was like, let's do a music video.

Christopher Marciano:

Why not?

Christopher Marciano:

Let's do it.

Christopher Marciano:

I have no knowledge of making music videos.

Christopher Marciano:

I have none of that, but I made one of my students a videographer.

Christopher Marciano:

I made one of them director..

Christopher Marciano:

I made the.

Christopher Marciano:

Actors like we just set roles and created this music video.

Christopher Marciano:

We ended up on the news for it in Orlando's the kids were just blown away.

Christopher Marciano:

So I started doing that as a tradition.

Christopher Marciano:

We did it a few times.

Christopher Marciano:

We had a NBA player on one of our music videos.

Christopher Marciano:

The kids were blown away and he agreed to come to the school, talk to them.

Christopher Marciano:

Be in the video, play basketball with them.

Christopher Marciano:

It was amazing.

Christopher Marciano:

And I just know that this moment that we shared doing that experience,

Christopher Marciano:

they will never forget about it.

Christopher Marciano:

Ever.

Christopher Marciano:

So I will never forget about it.

Christopher Marciano:

So it was pretty amazing.

Christopher Marciano:

That

Catherine:

is that's awesome.

Catherine:

Those kids ran with it.

Catherine:

You gave it to them and all you did was guide them and they ran with it.

Christopher Marciano:

Yeah, not at first, but they

Christopher Marciano:

they definitely proved me wrong and showed me that, you know, Kids are far

Christopher Marciano:

more capable than what we even think.

Christopher Marciano:

And I set high expectations for my kiddos, but for them to come and surpass that just

Christopher Marciano:

shows me, wow, look at what they can do.

Christopher Marciano:

It's still going on.

Christopher Marciano:

Unfortunately, , once I got promoted, they moved me to a different school.

Christopher Marciano:

Because my school had an assistant principal, so that

Christopher Marciano:

school is still doing it.

Christopher Marciano:

They'll do a music classes, which is great.

Christopher Marciano:

So I'm hoping that will carry on, even though I'm not there.

Christopher Marciano:

I'm still so well connected with them because they are my core.

Christopher Marciano:

But now that I'm at my school now as assistant principal, I'm hoping

Christopher Marciano:

once all this clears up, I could implement that within my new school.

Christopher Marciano:

Yeah.

Christopher Marciano:

Do you

Catherine:

miss teaching?

Catherine:

Oh, do you like doing the assistant principalship?

Christopher Marciano:

I will tell you, I love being an assistant

Christopher Marciano:

principal because I'm able to reach more able to reach more kids.

Christopher Marciano:

I'm able to reach teachers and parents.

Christopher Marciano:

So I have the whole school.

Christopher Marciano:

I loved being a teacher.

Christopher Marciano:

I do from time to time think of.

Christopher Marciano:

Well, I love having those really close relationships with my kiddos and watching

Christopher Marciano:

them grow, but it just challenges me now to just be in the classroom more often

Christopher Marciano:

and share my thoughts with the kids and hear them and be with them just to watch

Christopher Marciano:

them grow and establish that relationship.

Christopher Marciano:

But I love being assistant principal..

Christopher Marciano:

Sure.

Christopher Marciano:

That's awesome.

Catherine:

That's so great.

Catherine:

I love that you are loving it.

Catherine:

That's fabulous.

Catherine:

And you are.

Catherine:

Yeah.

Catherine:

And that you're doing so much to bring those kids into a

Christopher Marciano:

new world,

Catherine:

their world.

Catherine:

Yeah.

Catherine:

Their world.

Catherine:

And with their own experiences.

Catherine:

So it's not your experiences, it's their experiences.

Catherine:

And that I think is yeah.

Catherine:

Really important.

Catherine:

And so what are your next steps with music as far as your own.

Christopher Marciano:

Artistry.

Catherine:

So I've been

Christopher Marciano:

working on my album and everyone's going to like,

Christopher Marciano:

hurt me for this because they're like, we just need the album.

Christopher Marciano:

We need the album, we need the album, but it takes so much work.

Christopher Marciano:

And I'm such a Virgo.

Christopher Marciano:

I'm such a perfectionist that I need it to be perfect.

Christopher Marciano:

This is my first album.

Christopher Marciano:

And I want my first album to showcase all the different sides of me.

Christopher Marciano:

Everything that I've gone through so that I no longer have to explain myself.

Christopher Marciano:

I no longer have to elaborate on situations.

Christopher Marciano:

I can just put my album out there, listen to my album.

Christopher Marciano:

This is exactly who Christopher Marciano is.

Christopher Marciano:

And then we can move on to the next one.

Christopher Marciano:

So I want to be sure, like I said, I'm very transparent

Christopher Marciano:

and I write what I go through.

Christopher Marciano:

So I want to make sure that what I'm writing about.

Christopher Marciano:

It's okay.

Christopher Marciano:

Of course with my family, because I think it's important that I think of

Christopher Marciano:

them during this time, but I definitely want to share what I've gone through

Christopher Marciano:

because I feel like other people can listen to my words and see the outcome.

Christopher Marciano:

And I think I've done pretty well for myself.

Christopher Marciano:

And I'm so humbled by that.

Christopher Marciano:

So blessed and I want others to see that and improve their mental health

Christopher Marciano:

and take the steps in becoming a better version of themselves that they

Christopher Marciano:

never knew that they were capable of doing, because my childhood was very,

Christopher Marciano:

very rough and I would never fathom that I would be where I am today.

Christopher Marciano:

And I know just by being a teacher there, several kids out there that

Christopher Marciano:

are going through the same thing.

Christopher Marciano:

So I want this album to be perfect for them more than for me, but.

Christopher Marciano:

Perfect for them and that to serve as an outlet.

Christopher Marciano:

So right now I am two songs away from being done.

Christopher Marciano:

So I'm going to release a few more songs

Christopher Marciano:

and recording music videos, but the album will be out this year.

Christopher Marciano:

So who

Catherine:

are some of the folks that are helping you out with the production?

Catherine:

Because you said you, you don't produce your own.

Catherine:

You write your own lyrics and someone else does the music.

Christopher Marciano:

Right.

Christopher Marciano:

So I wrote every single song on this first album, I wrote.

Christopher Marciano:

Production wise.

Christopher Marciano:

I have an amazing producer named Layird music just in case you're

Christopher Marciano:

looking for music out there.

Christopher Marciano:

If you go to L a Y I R D music.com, he is absolutely phenomenal.

Christopher Marciano:

He is also based in Florida and he does my pop happy with

Christopher Marciano:

a little eerie notes on there.

Christopher Marciano:

He is my go-to person.

Christopher Marciano:

And then aside from that, I have a producer named

Christopher Marciano:

Shariv who is based in Italy.

Christopher Marciano:

I hope I didn't mess that up.

Christopher Marciano:

Pretty sure it's Italy.

Christopher Marciano:

He's phenomenal.

Christopher Marciano:

Well, I connected with him through just social media and he had a

Christopher Marciano:

few love his piano instrumentals.

Christopher Marciano:

I'm such a piano person.

Christopher Marciano:

And then I have Mantra and.

Christopher Marciano:

Which is phenomenal.

Christopher Marciano:

He's done several songs of mine and last but not least Rebel Music.

Christopher Marciano:

He's absolutely incredible as well.

Christopher Marciano:

So several producers around the world that I've been so fortunate to connect

Christopher Marciano:

with and gain their trust with just allowing me to sing all over their

Christopher Marciano:

instrumentals and be, have it on my album.

Christopher Marciano:

So it's been quite a joy.

Christopher Marciano:

A lot of people say that I need to let more people in my circle when it comes

Christopher Marciano:

to writing, but I told them once I get to my second album, then I can explore that

Christopher Marciano:

world but this first album is so personal.

Christopher Marciano:

So I just wanted it to be all about my words and how I feel.

Christopher Marciano:

And then the second album will be completely collaborative

Christopher Marciano:

when it comes to writing.

Christopher Marciano:

Cause I'm, I've always been curious about that side.

Catherine:

Yeah.

Catherine:

Oh, well, I'm anxious.

Catherine:

There's, there's a fellow whom you would love listening to,

Catherine:

uh, on one of my, on my podcast.

Catherine:

Oh, his name is Rawiri James..

Catherine:

Yeah,

Christopher Marciano:

absolutely.

Christopher Marciano:

I love looking for new

Catherine:

people.

Catherine:

He's an R and B artist.

Catherine:

He's a Maori..

Catherine:

Yeah, so, and his struggles are different from yours, but he wrote from the heart.

Catherine:

Absolutely.

Catherine:

From the heart with his music..

Catherine:

And can you share some of those struggles or is that giving away

Catherine:

too much when the, for the album,

Christopher Marciano:

since you're so nice and positive, I guess I should.

Christopher Marciano:

There.

Christopher Marciano:

I'll talk about one of my songs..

Christopher Marciano:

I I'm just sharing so much with you.

Christopher Marciano:

This is, this is great.

Christopher Marciano:

Uh, I'm looking up at the wall because I literally have my track

Christopher Marciano:

listing on my wall of all my songs.

Christopher Marciano:

So if you see me looking up constantly, because I'm looking at all of my

Christopher Marciano:

songs., it's like a constant reminder.

Christopher Marciano:

Like you need to get this album done.

Christopher Marciano:

Marciano you need to get this album done..

Christopher Marciano:

So one of the songs I have is called "Reason" and it is about, completely

Christopher Marciano:

about mental health and something that I'm really pushing with my

Christopher Marciano:

album is definitely mental health.

Christopher Marciano:

It talks about me continuing to do music because other people have

Christopher Marciano:

really pushed me to continue to do it.

Christopher Marciano:

I got to a point in my life where I wasn't so sure on whether I should proceed

Christopher Marciano:

with music because as as an independent artist it is so natural to go out there

Christopher Marciano:

and compare you know, your amount of followers on Instagram to other people

Christopher Marciano:

and the amount of people who are liking your pictures and commenting on your

Christopher Marciano:

posts, or it's so natural for us as humans to go and compare ourselves to others.

Christopher Marciano:

And it hurts a little bit, because I was just looking at

Christopher Marciano:

how successful other people were.

Christopher Marciano:

And I felt like I could get there, but I was missing some things to get there.

Christopher Marciano:

And it took me a while to really sit back and realize Christopher, you've

Christopher Marciano:

done this for a little over two years.

Christopher Marciano:

That's all, some people have been doing this for their entire life and you have

Christopher Marciano:

received these amazing blessings with performing several different times.

Christopher Marciano:

So.

Christopher Marciano:

No, you have a great support system.

Christopher Marciano:

You have family members and friends who are really wanting

Christopher Marciano:

your music and know word for word.

Christopher Marciano:

When I had one of my shows, there were people singing word for word

Christopher Marciano:

to one of my songs"Runaway", and I remember I had to stop singing

Christopher Marciano:

because I got so emotional because everyone was singing louder than I was.

Christopher Marciano:

And I was just like, oh my gosh, this is amazing.

Christopher Marciano:

So in that moment I said, Okay, you guys are the reason why I continue to do this.

Christopher Marciano:

So I want this song to serve as a reason for everyone else to go

Christopher Marciano:

and push other people to do well and push other people to be..

Christopher Marciano:

I want other people to be someone else's reason aside from me.

Christopher Marciano:

So I'm okay now, but go out there and find someone who needs some help and

Christopher Marciano:

be their reason to to push through.

Christopher Marciano:

So the words in that song, it gets very detailed.

Christopher Marciano:

It talks about potentially not wanting to be in this world anymore and how you could

Christopher Marciano:

overcome that because these are topics in the world that needs to be discussed

Christopher Marciano:

and that are happening every day.

Christopher Marciano:

So I'm hoping from this song, someone out there, even if it's just one heart,

Christopher Marciano:

I just want to touch that one heart and have them feel like I'm okay,

Christopher Marciano:

because this person made it through.

Christopher Marciano:

I can too.

Christopher Marciano:

And if you don't get that out of that, I want you to go out there and be someone

Christopher Marciano:

someone's reason to continue to be happy and improve their mental health.

Catherine:

Wow.

Catherine:

That is so inspiring.

Catherine:

Oh, that's that's really, oh, very much so.

Catherine:

Very, very much so.

Catherine:

And I'm impressed with how much you've really thought deeply about the words that

Catherine:

you're putting together for this album.

Catherine:

And I'm very anxious to hear the production of it.

Catherine:

Yeah.

Catherine:

The music behind it,

Christopher Marciano:

that song, it's pretty amazing.

Christopher Marciano:

I mean, I'm biased because I love all of my songs, but that one,

Christopher Marciano:

I think you'll really love it.

Christopher Marciano:

And I can't wait to share with you guys.

Catherine:

Yeah.

Catherine:

So when you were writing the songs and you're writing about such heartfelt

Catherine:

issues within yourself, or that have something that either you've experienced

Catherine:

or you've seen others experience, et cetera, so writing the songs, has

Catherine:

it changed you as a person in any

Christopher Marciano:

way?

Christopher Marciano:

Completely, uh, I will say during the writing process and when I'm in the studio

Christopher Marciano:

recording the song, it's it gets tough.

Christopher Marciano:

There's songs on my album, where I naturally cry.

Christopher Marciano:

And some of that, those emotions I've left the, in the songs

Christopher Marciano:

because they were authentic.

Christopher Marciano:

And I thought it was important for people to feel that.

Christopher Marciano:

Leading my song.

Christopher Marciano:

I'll explain how my therapy works.

Christopher Marciano:

My songs come from, like I said, an experience.

Christopher Marciano:

So in the beginning, I'm left uneasy about a situation I went through, whether it's

Christopher Marciano:

a happy moment and I just want to get it out there or whether it's a really tough

Christopher Marciano:

situation that I wasn't sure how to deal with it or how to vocalize my emotions.

Christopher Marciano:

I'll go and write it.

Christopher Marciano:

As soon as I finished writing it and I finished recording it

Christopher Marciano:

I'm okay from that situation.

Christopher Marciano:

So if I was very upset about a situation, once I record that, my, my thoughts and my

Christopher Marciano:

emotions with that, I'm completely fine.

Christopher Marciano:

I don't even have to revisit it anymore.

Christopher Marciano:

So it's literally therapy for me because people go into therapy and, and come

Christopher Marciano:

out feeling better about themselves.

Christopher Marciano:

I'd go into the studio and come out, feeling so much

Christopher Marciano:

better about that situation.

Christopher Marciano:

And I almost get clarity with every word that I'm writing I'm gaining

Christopher Marciano:

understanding of the situation.

Christopher Marciano:

I remember one of my songs that I wrote, can't tell you the name of

Christopher Marciano:

that one, but I absolutely love it.

Christopher Marciano:

You'll love it too., one of my, one of my songs, I wrote based on my ex's shoes,

Christopher Marciano:

because I wanted to understand why he did what he did and what he was feeling.

Christopher Marciano:

So I said, okay, I'm going to put myself in his perspective and write a

Christopher Marciano:

song based off of his, his perspective.

Christopher Marciano:

And I gained clarity after I finished writing that song.

Christopher Marciano:

And even though it was my situation that I went through and I'm still writing

Christopher Marciano:

about my experience, I wrote it through his mind to try to gain understanding.

Christopher Marciano:

And once I finished that song, I was completely fine.

Christopher Marciano:

I'm like, okay.

Christopher Marciano:

Perfect.

Christopher Marciano:

Oh,

Catherine:

that is really that's.

Catherine:

That therapy is awesome.

Catherine:

That's great.

Catherine:

I used, yeah, I'm so glad to hear that.

Catherine:

I used to write poetry.

Catherine:

My mother bought me a journal and came home and handed it

Catherine:

to me and I went right to it.

Catherine:

I have so many of them

Christopher Marciano:

though.

Christopher Marciano:

Oh my God.

Christopher Marciano:

You have to share.

Catherine:

Oh my gosh.

Christopher Marciano:

We have to literally just have a night.

Christopher Marciano:

And I'll go pull out one of my old elementary poetry and you pull

Christopher Marciano:

out yours and let us share it.

Christopher Marciano:

Like, that would be

Catherine:

amazing.

Catherine:

I'm all for it.

Catherine:

I have to do that.

Catherine:

I will do that.

Catherine:

Let's set

Christopher Marciano:

a date kind of in place.

Christopher Marciano:

You never know your poem could just reach someone or we could just laugh about it.

Christopher Marciano:

It would be great.

Catherine:

Oh, we could do something live for the listeners . , oh,

Catherine:

that would be so much.

Catherine:

But

Christopher Marciano:

Christopher Marciano, I'm thrilled.Just make

Christopher Marciano:

me , your co-host that's all.

Christopher Marciano:

I love it.

Christopher Marciano:

I love it.

Catherine:

All right.

Catherine:

Well, we're, we're in, I'm in, I'm in I'll pull out all of those books.

Catherine:

This is a hoot.

Catherine:

I'm loving this.

Catherine:

So, all right.

Catherine:

Is there anything else you want to share or any, anything that I didn't

Catherine:

ask you that you're dying to share?

Christopher Marciano:

Actually, this has been such an amazing experience.

Christopher Marciano:

I love that you asked about my album.

Christopher Marciano:

And I've just been so lucky to connect with so many people, including you, right.

Christopher Marciano:

And just learn about what they're doing about their different, uh,

Christopher Marciano:

endeavors and their businesses.

Christopher Marciano:

It's just absolutely amazing.

Christopher Marciano:

So I did want to share that just to encourage other people out there to

Christopher Marciano:

reach out to strangers in a safe way of course, and just find out yeah

Christopher Marciano:

what you could do to help during this time, because this is a time

Christopher Marciano:

that we need to come together.

Christopher Marciano:

So yes.

Christopher Marciano:

Thank you for showcasing that and having me.

Christopher Marciano:

Oh,

Catherine:

absolutely.

Catherine:

Well, you are such a positive, positive imprint and inspiration, and my podcast

Catherine:

So in closing, are there any, yeah, that the excitement is, is phenomenal.

Catherine:

So in closing, are there any final thoughts you want to share?

Christopher Marciano:

I again, just want to thank you for spreading positivity.

Christopher Marciano:

We need it, especially during this time.

Christopher Marciano:

I want to thank you for just having various different people.

Christopher Marciano:

Christopher Marciano:

Christopher Marciano:

them to do the same because we need authentic positivity out there in the
