Hi there,
Speaker:it's Sue and thanks for joining me for Tips and Talk
Speaker:Day. These are bite-sized topics that I pull from community questions
Speaker:and things that I'm observing in the world of handmade small
Speaker:business. If you'd like to submit a topic,
Speaker:DM e over on Instagram at Gift Biz Unwrapped.
Speaker:We've covered so many facets of a handmade product business over
Speaker:the course of the years and today is no exception.
Speaker:We've talked about how to start and grow your business stories
Speaker:from many of you who have done just that.
Speaker:How to choose and use social media sites,
Speaker:build your website.
Speaker:Oh my gosh,
Speaker:there is just so much information here for you,
Speaker:but not necessarily at your fingertips.
Speaker:So I've made a tool for you that categorizes by topic
Speaker:the episodes of this podcast,
Speaker:but only the ones that stay relevant over time because yes,
Speaker:let's face it,
Speaker:there are past shows that just don't work anymore for us
Speaker:today. The world is changing so fast,
Speaker:right? You can use this tool to zero in on whatever
Speaker:topic you need at the moment.
Speaker:Do you wanna hear from others in your specific industry?
Speaker:How about details on Pinterest or setting up an email strategy?
Speaker:You can now easily find the right episodes and create your
Speaker:priority listening roster.
Speaker:Consider this your Gift Biz resource center at a glance.
Speaker:It's a Google Sheet best viewable on your computer versus your
Speaker:phone. Make sure to look on the bottom where there are
Speaker:five separate sections for easy topic reference,
Speaker:kind of like chapters of a book.
Speaker:It makes finding the shows to help you with what you're
Speaker:working on right now,
Speaker:so much easier.

Speaker:Congratulations. You've started your business maybe last week or perhaps years
Speaker:ago. You were exhilarated when you made your first sale,
Speaker:and from there the focus was on getting another sale and
Speaker:then another one,
Speaker:and when that happens,
Speaker:then you start thinking about how you can grow even faster
Speaker:and bigger.
Speaker:Always looking at that next level.
Speaker:The desire to stretch for more and more has been ingrained
Speaker:in us over the decades.
Speaker:The thinking that bigger is better.
Speaker:Bigger meal portions gives you more deliciousness to enjoy in the
Speaker:moment, but you pay for it with your health and on
Speaker:the scale.
Speaker:SUVs are great when you have a lot of kids to
Speaker:cart around or for your camping and fishing weekends,
Speaker:but there are a lot more costly to fuel up.
Speaker:A big home sends the message that you've made it,
Speaker:and I agree.
Speaker:It's really nice to have quiet spaces to sneak off to,
Speaker:but they also come with higher prices,
Speaker:more upkeep and other pressures,
Speaker:big, bigger and then even bigger.
Speaker:We've been told it's what we're supposed to do.
Speaker:It seems to me these days we're being forced to finally
Speaker:get it and back up a bit.
Speaker:Due to the rising costs,
Speaker:portions are shrinking to keep the price the same.
Speaker:We're rationing our driving or considering smaller vehicles to take into
Speaker:count the costs of getting around,
Speaker:and I'm sure you can think of many more things that
Speaker:apply to you where you're trimming back.
Speaker:While it may feel like less initially,
Speaker:it can actually make us happier and healthier to have less.
Speaker:An article in life intelligence lists five areas that are improved
Speaker:when we focus less on more and more on quality.
Speaker:First, it increases independence,
Speaker:confidence and comfort in being who we are,
Speaker:I guess because you're focused on what's right in front of
Speaker:you without comparing yourself to others.
Speaker:Second, it increases focus on what you deem to be important
Speaker:because you've eliminated many of the distractions.
Speaker:This leads to richer experiences in both your personal and work
Speaker:activity, and along these lines,
Speaker:there's a greater appreciation of the little things because you're calm
Speaker:enough to be more attentive and observant.
Speaker:This can also help with increased productivity because you're not multitasking
Speaker:all the time.
Speaker:Four, eliminating these distractions and the continual jumping from one thing
Speaker:to another improves your mental space,
Speaker:a calmer mind,
Speaker:if you will,
Speaker:overall adding more minimalistic elements into your life decreases stress and
Speaker:anxiety, which brings greater happiness and fulfillment.
Speaker:Late last year after one of my talks,
Speaker:I had a woman come up to the booth with some
Speaker:questions. We got into this discussion about growing bigger.
Speaker:She was feeling forced to do so by those around her
Speaker:when actually she was perfectly happy just as she was.
Speaker:Her business is producing a living salary.
Speaker:She only has a couple of other people assisting her and
Speaker:it integrates into other things she likes to do outside of
Speaker:work, like spend time with her grandchildren and play golf,
Speaker:but she felt like she was failing if she wasn't growing.
Speaker:Hmm. Wonder where that idea came from.
Speaker:Given all the outside influences of bigger is better when we
Speaker:really got down to it.
Speaker:She just wanted confirmation that staying exactly the size she is
Speaker:now is okay,
Speaker:really. She asked,
Speaker:of course,
Speaker:I told her,
Speaker:that's the thing about your own business.
Speaker:You can control it so that it's right for you.
Speaker:I saw an immediate release of tension from her shoulders and
Speaker:her face seemed to lighten up too.
Speaker:She thanked me over and over again before she left,
Speaker:all because I gave her permission not to grow.
Speaker:Now, don't get me wrong,
Speaker:I'm not saying growing is bad.
Speaker:If that's what you want.
Speaker:If you have certain financial goals to achieve so that you
Speaker:can drop your nine to five,
Speaker:of course you need to build your business to a certain
Speaker:level, you may be energized by continual growth year over year.
Speaker:It's wonderful to have that energy and drive.
Speaker:It's just not the only way.
Speaker:Along this line of thinking,
Speaker:I thought it might be helpful to point out some of
Speaker:the changes that can occur in your business When you grow.
Speaker:The purpose is for you to think about how you'll manage
Speaker:these changes,
Speaker:so you still love what you created based on your level
Speaker:of growth.
Speaker:You don't want to accidentally grow your business into a burden
Speaker:versus a joy,
Speaker:and don't underestimate this.
Speaker:It happens when you first start a business as a maker.
Speaker:It's because you love the act of making and doing more
Speaker:of that and seeing others enjoy your products is a beautiful
Speaker:vision. Reality is slightly different,
Speaker:however, and by thinking ahead about how you'll manage the changes
Speaker:or to what level you want your business to evolve can
Speaker:keep it a business that you love.
Speaker:Here are six ways your role in your business may change.
Speaker:First, the amount of production time goes up.
Speaker:Of course,
Speaker:as orders increase,
Speaker:this is one unique facet of handmade.
Speaker:The more sales,
Speaker:the more work you've created for yourself in making.
Speaker:Not to mention the other parts of filling the order,
Speaker:like invoicing,
Speaker:packaging, and shipping,
Speaker:but at some point you'll reach a limit of how much
Speaker:you can physically make on your own.
Speaker:There's simply a hard stop to the hours available in a
Speaker:day. This cuts off additional growth unless you,
Speaker:and this is my second point,
Speaker:hire help to take some of the tasks off your plate.
Speaker:When you hire people,
Speaker:even if it's only one person,
Speaker:your role changes into a management position.
Speaker:They take direction and guidance from you to do their job.
Speaker:As you continue,
Speaker:leadership comes into play too.
Speaker:You set the tone for the business that needs to be
Speaker:communicated to your employees from the overall vision to how you
Speaker:communicate with customers online,
Speaker:in a phone call and in person,
Speaker:your day-to-day changes because they'll be questions and decisions to be
Speaker:made and communicated to others for things you used to handle
Speaker:yourself. Space also starts to become a consideration as you grow.
Speaker:When orders are consistent,
Speaker:you need more product on hand to quickly produce and ship.
Speaker:That means your stored inventory will increase actually with both your
Speaker:product components and your finished pieces.
Speaker:Product dependent,
Speaker:of course,
Speaker:this can creep into and overcome your personal space if you're
Speaker:working from home.
Speaker:This increase in inventory and addition of staff necessitates you put
Speaker:formal processes in place for tasks like payroll and inventory management.
Speaker:It's beneficial to get this in place in the beginning so
Speaker:it can grow with you without it being a huge project
Speaker:down the road.
Speaker:Sustaining and continuing to grow will also require new methods.
Speaker:Email marketing and use of social would be solid options to
Speaker:put in place.
Speaker:And as you can see,
Speaker:bringing all these things into your business takes up more of
Speaker:your time and gets you farther away from your vision of
Speaker:making. It's not a bad thing.
Speaker:You're building up your business.
Speaker:I personally love the management and leadership role,
Speaker:but it's not for everybody.
Speaker:As a spinoff of this fifth point to grow,
Speaker:you'll want to add in multiple sales channels.
Speaker:For example,
Speaker:some people do in-person shows and sell through their website.
Speaker:Some have multiple websites like Shopify and Etsy,
Speaker:some sell live inside Facebook and Instagram.
Speaker:Having multiple sales points gets you visibility to different audiences,
Speaker:so more potential for sales.
Speaker:As you can see with all of this,
Speaker:it becomes more intricate and complicated and amazing.
Speaker:If it's what you love like I do,
Speaker:but it's not for everyone,
Speaker:and that's the message.
Speaker:Success of your business is defined by you and you alone.
Speaker:If you need permission,
Speaker:like the woman I mentioned earlier,
Speaker:gosh, I wish I could remember her name.
Speaker:I'm giving you permission now to build your business to great
Speaker:heights. The peak being what feels best to fulfill you and
Speaker:bring happiness,
Speaker:balance, and pleasure to your days because you're doing what you
Speaker:love. That's a wrap.
Speaker:I'm a get to the point kind of girl,
Speaker:and this is what you can expect from these quick midweek
Speaker:sessions. Now it's your turn.
Speaker:Go out and fulfill that dream of yours.
Speaker:Share your handmade products with us.
Speaker:We want them and they bring us both.
