Think you might have a herniated disc? In this video, Dr. Brad Wolf dives into what the symptoms of a herniated disc are.

To understand what the symptoms of a herniated disc are, we must first know about the disc. The disk is comprised of the nucleus and the annulus. Overtime, the thickness of the disc begins to shrink as a natural process; but what happens with a herniation, is the disc itself becomes damaged and begins to tear from the inside out. As it tears, the center of the disc pushes out towards the wall of the disc. If there are nerves nearby this site, the disc will begin to put pressure on the nerve.

As the disc begins to protrude and put pressure on nerves, a number of things can happen to that nerve. It can be stretched, twisted, or compressed, and once nerves are affected or irritated, your body can experience the effects in the form of pain, tingling, numbness, weakness, and other symptoms in various parts of the body.

If you are experiencing any of these symptoms in your arms or legs, it could be an indicator of a herniated disc. To find out if you have a herniation, the best step to take is to get a MRI to see if there is any protrusion in the spine and on the discs. When you understand what condition you have, it becomes much easier to treat it.
