Speaker:And now let's move on to the show.
Speaker:Hi there.

Speaker:business. And today I would like to present to you once
Speaker:again, Sue B Zimmerman.
Speaker:Sylvia is known worldwide as the Instagram expert.
Speaker:She is an insightful social media educator,
Speaker:energetic speaker,
Speaker:and in demand business coach blog is ranked as one of
Speaker:the top 10 social media blogs in 2017 by social media
Speaker:examiner. She's also one of the most popular paid applied instructors.
Speaker:It's been named by Huffington post as one of the top
Speaker:50 must follow women entrepreneurs in 2017.
Speaker:How lucky are we to have her with us today?
Speaker:Suby welcome to the show.
Speaker:Hey, it's great to be back Sue.
Speaker:I'm happy to be here.
Speaker:I know,
Speaker:you know,
Speaker:I was looking back to see when I had you on
Speaker:for the first time.
Speaker:And it was so long ago you were episode 32.
Speaker:And what are we on now?
Speaker:I'll let me think.
Speaker:I believe you're going to be episode 109.
Speaker:Wow. Well,
Speaker:congratulations to you for all of that.
Speaker:Oh, cause I know this podcast life is not easy.
Speaker:It takes a lot of time,
Speaker:but it's worth it.
Speaker:And it's super rewarding.
Speaker:Yes. I want to talk totally about stories today because we
Speaker:spoke so long ago about Instagram.
Speaker:So give biz listeners anything you don't know,
Speaker:or if you are new and even starting to just think
Speaker:about Instagram as a platform,
Speaker:go back to that specific episode.
Speaker:Number 32,
Speaker:I'll link it up in the show notes,
Speaker:but so much has changed.
Speaker:Or I don't know if I should say so much changed,
Speaker:but has been included in added to Instagram.
Speaker:One of the biggest things is stories,
Speaker:and I know you are such a proponent right now of
Speaker:stories be,
Speaker:could you share what stories are all about?
Speaker:Let's just start there and ground everybody Instagram introduced stories back
Speaker:in August,
Speaker:2016. And as soon as they did,
Speaker:I was all over it because I used to be kind
Speaker:of obsessed with Snapchat and love documenting a lot of my
Speaker:real raw content behind the scenes,
Speaker:through Snapchat in a very creative way.
Speaker:And so Instagram stories allowed me to basically do the same.
Speaker:And with that came my audience that I had already established
Speaker:on Instagram,
Speaker:basically Instagram stories are like a slideshow clip where you can
Speaker:integrate photos that lasts for seconds.
Speaker:You can not change the amount of time that someone views
Speaker:a photo like you can on Snapchat.
Speaker:Also, you can have a clip that is a video with
Speaker:up to 15 seconds.
Speaker:So that's the max of each video clip.
Speaker:The idea is that you string together a story,
Speaker:a beginning,
Speaker:a middle and an end that gives value in some way
Speaker:that your followers would be interested in coming back for more,
Speaker:because two,
Speaker:they disappear in 24 hours.
Speaker:I'm just kind of thinking of people who are already on
Speaker:Instagram with their accounts and you are a big proponent of
Speaker:making sure that the account is super clear.
Speaker:If you're there for business it's business,
Speaker:if you're there for personal it's personal.
Speaker:How do you integrate that then in yes.
Speaker:So I have two accounts on Instagram.
Speaker:I want the listeners to know,
Speaker:I do have a personal account at Sue B Zimmerman and
Speaker:on that account,
Speaker:when I'm doing stories,
Speaker:it's really three placement of what I did with Snapchat,
Speaker:but with a lot more intention.
Speaker:And when I say intention,
Speaker:you see the same core values that I share in my
Speaker:feed, in my stories.
Speaker:And so there's not a disconnect.
Speaker:It's basically the life of a successful business owner and all
Speaker:the things that are valuable to me and that I want
Speaker:to share in a fun,
Speaker:entertaining and somewhat exclusive way.
Speaker:And when I say exclusive,
Speaker:I mean,
Speaker:I believe that Instagram stories should be where you're sharing exclusive
Speaker:content, that you are not sharing anywhere else.
Speaker:So this whole real and raw and authentic aspect that stories
Speaker:can add to your awareness as a business or a brand
Speaker:is exciting for Instagram.
Speaker:And let's just ground the listeners one more way too.
Speaker:So we have our Instagram feed,
Speaker:which I like to call your digital is like a digital
Speaker:magazine. So basically if you have set your account up for
Speaker:success and you have a dynamic bio that someone can quickly
Speaker:read in three to six seconds and know exactly who you
Speaker:are and what you do for your business and the content
Speaker:that you show in your feed matches up to that you're
Speaker:in good shape.
Speaker:And then as another layer,
Speaker:you have your Instagram stories that can absolutely get someone's attention.
Speaker:Now I know people that just like to watch Instagram stories
Speaker:now and don't necessarily go into the feed.
Speaker:So my goal is always to drive traffic back to the
Speaker:Instagram feed where that content lives on forever.
Speaker:So I just explained my personal strategy on my business account,
Speaker:the Instagram expert,
Speaker:I share Instagram tips in a way that is basically bite-size
Speaker:actionable tips that someone can watch.
Speaker:And yes,
Speaker:I'm funny in a very entertaining way over there,
Speaker:but someone can watch and say,
Speaker:Oh my gosh,
Speaker:that was brilliant.
Speaker:I get it.
Speaker:I'm doing that.
Speaker:So cool.
Speaker:Awesome. And the way I know this is because I get
Speaker:replies from all of my stories that I share there,
Speaker:and I have been getting super close to 2000 views per
Speaker:clip on my Instagram business page.
Speaker:I never got that kind of reach on Snapchat.
Speaker:I got close to 500 views and on my personal Instagram
Speaker:stories, I get between five and 700 views per clip.
Speaker:So let's talk about this for one quick second.
Speaker:So, so obviously people on Instagram are on there with intention,
Speaker:with focused intention where they basically want to consume content that
Speaker:they are interested in.
Speaker:And yes,
Speaker:my life is interesting.
Speaker:It's fun,
Speaker:but you know what time is money and people don't always
Speaker:have the time to be watching what Suby Zimmerman's doing,
Speaker:but on my business account,
Speaker:learning how I teach those tips,
Speaker:I'm getting a lot of eyeballs.
Speaker:And with those eyeballs comes more engagement on my Instagram feed,
Speaker:which ultimately takes people to the link in my bio,
Speaker:which is typically an opt-in to grow my email list.
Speaker:Sometimes our blog posts,
Speaker:as you saw yesterday,
Speaker:Sue, and then frequently a webinar,
Speaker:if we're partnering with someone or doing our own,
Speaker:I know that was a long-winded answer,
Speaker:but I thought it would be a good way to break
Speaker:it down.
Speaker:Yeah, no,
Speaker:that's really good.
Speaker:And I think the thing I want to underline and just
Speaker:make sure to point out to our listeners is how intentional
Speaker:you are with the two different sites.
Speaker:Because I,
Speaker:for one,
Speaker:didn't understand how to do that really well.
Speaker:At first,
Speaker:your personal still has somewhat of a business presence to it
Speaker:because you are a business person that's who you're facing the
Speaker:world with,
Speaker:but it's more personal behind the scenes.
Speaker:Here's what your life is like.
Speaker:And you can splatter in personal too.
Speaker:And it's in alignment with your Instagram account.
Speaker:Then when you go over onto the business side,
Speaker:your account is all tips.
Speaker:And so the stories aligned to it in a light,
Speaker:playful, fun way,
Speaker:but they're coming out with a business action or a learning
Speaker:or something that is more business oriented than just learning more
Speaker:about you to be the personality.
Speaker:Exactly. And the key thing that you said,
Speaker:Sue is fun.
Speaker:And I always say entertaining if you're boring and your stories,
Speaker:nobody is going to click through and watch.
Speaker:So there's ways that we can set people up for success.
Speaker:You want me to go through some of those now?
Speaker:Absolutely. Okay.
Speaker:If you're going to embrace Instagram stories and I hope that
Speaker:you do,
Speaker:and Sue,
Speaker:we do have a blog post that you can link in
Speaker:your show notes that will help people a lot.
Speaker:We also have a Instagram stories class that some of your
Speaker:listeners might be interested in and it's under $20.
Speaker:I could send you that link later,
Speaker:but basically these are the tips I want to go over
Speaker:here. You want to understand how to look at your camera
Speaker:on your phone as if you're talking to one person.
Speaker:So that's the first thing.
Speaker:Look at the camera.
Speaker:Look at the camera.
Speaker:As if you're looking at someone in the eye,
Speaker:also having different angles.
Speaker:When you're doing your clips,
Speaker:specifically, your video clips.
Speaker:So high to low bird's eye view,
Speaker:low to high walking in and out of the frame,
Speaker:using the very creative writing tools that we can go over,
Speaker:understanding the stickers and how they can add value to your
Speaker:account, which we can go over and using some of the
Speaker:filters. So one of my strategies who is whenever I want
Speaker:someone to listen to what I'm saying,
Speaker:because when you first go into Instagram stories,
Speaker:you have to turn up the volume on your phone to
Speaker:listen to the video.
Speaker:So you want to key people to do that.
Speaker:So I always say,
Speaker:listen up.
Speaker:I do it in one of my three colors that I
Speaker:use in the writing tools and the purple and I have
Speaker:the filter be black and white.
Speaker:So people know whenever they see a black and white video
Speaker:of me talking,
Speaker:they need to turn up the volume and listen.
Speaker:So I'm conditioning my followers to listen up on the black
Speaker:and white.
Speaker:And I consistently do this when I do my stories.
Speaker:The key word here is to be consistent with your story
Speaker:and the way that you're storyboarding it and sharing it down
Speaker:to what color tools that you're using,
Speaker:writing tools and even the highlighter,
Speaker:if you choose to use that.
Speaker:So would you also say consistency in terms of when you
Speaker:show up how many clips a story equals everything?
Speaker:No, not to that degree.
Speaker:So my tip is basically a tip that I teach in
Speaker:however long it takes me to teach it.
Speaker:And sometimes I will say,
Speaker:you need to listen to the end of the day to
Speaker:get the whole tip.
Speaker:And then that way people come back for more of my
Speaker:story. Oh,
Speaker:but that's a good tip in terms of advising people that
Speaker:it's not going to be over for it until the whole
Speaker:day. So you've got to keep coming back.
Speaker:Yeah. So I do that a lot and I've done a
Speaker:lot of Instagram stories,
Speaker:takeovers, which we definitely should talk about at the end,
Speaker:dear, my clips.
Speaker:I say,
Speaker:if you're starting out to keep it under a minute,
Speaker:cause people don't have time to tap through.
Speaker:And if people aren't tapping through your whole story,
Speaker:it's important to look and see where they're falling off.
Speaker:So you can look at analytics on Arabic clip by simply
Speaker:just tapping on the number of eyeballs on your posts that
Speaker:will take you to the back end of your clips or
Speaker:tapping on the avatar on the top left.
Speaker:When you're looking at your stories,
Speaker:looking at your eyeballs on your clips and your stories is
Speaker:important, but most importantly,
Speaker:so it's looking at who has watched to the end,
Speaker:who is watching and consuming your content to the very end.
Speaker:And often what I did at the beginning is I would
Speaker:send an Instagram direct message back,
Speaker:usually a video message because I'm comfortable on video.
Speaker:And I would say,
Speaker:thank you so much for watching my whole story.
Speaker:What was it that you learned the most?
Speaker:What tip did you like the best?
Speaker:Tell me why you like watching my stories.
Speaker:And so I got feedback from the people that watched my
Speaker:whole stories.
Speaker:Now, if you don't have time to do it,
Speaker:you absolutely should at least put those account names in a
Speaker:Google doc and know that these are people that you should
Speaker:be engaging with on Instagram.
Speaker:These are people consuming your content.
Speaker:They might not be actively engaging on your posts,
Speaker:but now they're actively engaging on your stories.
Speaker:So they know you because they watched you,
Speaker:they saw your tip.
Speaker:Hopefully you integrated some of your own voice and video into
Speaker:it front facing,
Speaker:and you now have a touch point.
Speaker:It's kind of like,
Speaker:they now give you permission to reach out and touch them
Speaker:again. Totally agree.
Speaker:And even if you can only do a couple like that
Speaker:personal contact that you do is so great and so impressive
Speaker:that let's say you make a goal for yourself that you
Speaker:can only direct message back two people a day.
Speaker:Well, if you have people watching you regularly over the week,
Speaker:over the month,
Speaker:it gets to be more and more.
Speaker:It's better than not Exactly.
Speaker:So you can watch who viewed your story to the end.
Speaker:And then also to the point of engagement and then growing
Speaker:your Instagram account and ultimately your business paying attention to who
Speaker:has replied in your story,
Speaker:in your clip.
Speaker:That Instagram direct message blows up for me daily as well.
Speaker:So I get a lot of people saying,
Speaker:Oh my God,
Speaker:I love Mr.
Speaker:Cody. He's so cute.
Speaker:So there's that.
Speaker:And then I get,
Speaker:Oh my God,
Speaker:that was the best tip I ever heard.
Speaker:You're brilliant.
Speaker:Thank you so much.
Speaker:So I will go back and say,
Speaker:are you going to apply this tag me when you do
Speaker:again, keeping that relationship building,
Speaker:Right? Let me stop you here before we move on.
Speaker:I want to make sure we get back to making value
Speaker:in your stories and give biz listeners.
Speaker:All you need to do is watch what she's doing,
Speaker:because I've told you this before Sue,
Speaker:you are the most creative person in terms of the colors
Speaker:and the way you're doing it in the way you're swiping
Speaker:in your head,
Speaker:coming in from the camera.
Speaker:Everything that she's saying here she does.
Speaker:But I have a really important question for you that jumps
Speaker:in a little bit before what we've even been talking about.
Speaker:You have 7,000
Speaker:million followers.
Speaker:What are you at now?
Speaker:50,000 Thousand on my business and 48 plus on my,
Speaker:Okay. So like I said,
Speaker:trillions of people.
Speaker:So it kind of would seem natural then that when you
Speaker:start doing stories,
Speaker:they are going to be people who will follow you because
Speaker:they're following you anywhere you are.
Speaker:So all you have to do is say,
Speaker:go look at my stories and people are going to be
Speaker:there. How does someone who isn't as well known yet get
Speaker:people to come over to their stories?
Speaker:Because what you've been talking about is once they're already there,
Speaker:but how do we get them there for the first time
Speaker:Now, it's that you're doing a story on social channels that
Speaker:you like to be on.
Speaker:Often on Twitter,
Speaker:you'll see me.
Speaker:I have assigned to,
Speaker:it says hashtag Suby stories.
Speaker:And so often on Twitter,
Speaker:if I shared a really good tip,
Speaker:I will say,
Speaker:check out my Instagram story tip today and I'll copy and
Speaker:paste the link to my Instagram account.
Speaker:So people can click on the link on Twitter and go
Speaker:right over to the Instagram expert and watch that story.
Speaker:So I'll share it on Twitter.
Speaker:I might even share it in one of my Facebook groups.
Speaker:Like last night when I went live on Instagram,
Speaker:I shared that I was going live and I got over
Speaker:500 people on my live broadcast,
Speaker:which is a whole nother podcast interview,
Speaker:but announcing it on your social channels and what I did
Speaker:for you today.
Speaker:I don't know if you watched my story on experts.
Speaker:I'm all about collaborating and introducing people to my followers who
Speaker:are in my life in some creative way.
Speaker:So for you today,
Speaker:I basically did that angle.
Speaker:I had the camera on Cody.
Speaker:Everyone loves seeing Cody.
Speaker:Like I can't even tell you how many times a day
Speaker:people told me to have an account for him.
Speaker:So Cody's my prop.
Speaker:I said,
Speaker:you know,
Speaker:Hey Mr.
Speaker:Cody, I'm having lunch.
Speaker:And soon I'm going to be on a podcast with Sue
Speaker:Monheit. Do you know her?
Speaker:She has this amazing podcast.
Speaker:So I showed them your Instagram accounts on my computer.
Speaker:And I tagged you when you collaborate with other businesses and
Speaker:you give shout outs in stories.
Speaker:And a shout out in a story is just an ad
Speaker:mentioned with their Instagram username.
Speaker:They get a notification that they were mentioned in a story.
Speaker:And so now my followers are going to be curious,
Speaker:like, wait,
Speaker:who's doing an interview and I'm in the gift industry.
Speaker:Like I'm a creator.
Speaker:I need to know who this Sumo and height is.
Speaker:And so hopefully Sue's going to get more followers and maybe
Speaker:even someone new to interview on your podcast,
Speaker:because you know,
Speaker:at the end of the day,
Speaker:Sue, and you know this about me,
Speaker:I know that the more you shine the light on other
Speaker:people, the more the light shines back on you.
Speaker:And I'm all about helping other people have more exposure and
Speaker:more success in their business.
Speaker:I mean,
Speaker:that's what I wake up and do every day,
Speaker:a hundred percent.
Speaker:Yeah. So I walked the talk whenever I can.
Speaker:And that was effortless for me.
Speaker:That took me 15 seconds to Duke.
Speaker:So are you going throughout your whole day then and figuring
Speaker:out what activities am I doing and how can I then
Speaker:build them into the stories?
Speaker:Yeah, that's a great question.
Speaker:So I know I'm not normal and I know this comes
Speaker:really easily to me.
Speaker:So I am that visual brain that sees opportunities just by
Speaker:looking at life,
Speaker:aesthetically colors,
Speaker:lighting in a creative way.
Speaker:And I do it kind of in the moment of the
Speaker:day. So I'll wake up often in the shower,
Speaker:I'll think,
Speaker:okay. Do I have an idea for an Instagram stories?
Speaker:But even before that too,
Speaker:I spent my morning,
Speaker:usually a good 45 minutes on Instagram in the morning,
Speaker:answering questions,
Speaker:engaging, and then I will see something like,
Speaker:Oh my God,
Speaker:that's brilliant.
Speaker:I need to talk about it.
Speaker:Or that's a great idea for a story.
Speaker:So I will often get my creative juices flowing from other
Speaker:people's energy.
Speaker:And that's what I really want your listeners to know.
Speaker:It's not necessarily what you're coming up with,
Speaker:but someone else might have showed you something in a story.
Speaker:It just sparks an idea for you.
Speaker:And that often happens to me.
Speaker:In addition,
Speaker:yes, I look at my content calendar.
Speaker:For example,
Speaker:we have a launch coming up for ReadySet gram,
Speaker:and this is a Instagram course for beginners who have under
Speaker:a thousand followers who are new to Instagram,
Speaker:who aren't necessarily making money on Instagram.
Speaker:So I want to tease that launch.
Speaker:And so I have been showing behind the scenes of me
Speaker:updating the videos that are in the course and talking about
Speaker:the videos and occasionally showing exclusive content that's in the videos,
Speaker:it gives you a sneak peek and you're like,
Speaker:wait, she has a course.
Speaker:I didn't know.
Speaker:She had a course.
Speaker:What's the course name,
Speaker:Oh, that's the module.
Speaker:I want that module.
Speaker:Where can I buy it?
Speaker:But it's done in a very indirect way.
Speaker:So it's very subtle and very playful and yeah,
Speaker:and I've sold two courses through just showing the behind the
Speaker:scenes. Nice.
Speaker:So I want people to know that I am a passionate
Speaker:entrepreneur, running a small business,
Speaker:like many of your listeners.
Speaker:I do have a team.
Speaker:I have two full-time employees and four contractors and you know,
Speaker:a team in the Philippines,
Speaker:but I call it a small business because at the end
Speaker:of the day,
Speaker:that's what we are.
Speaker:But at the same time,
Speaker:I know because I have so much influence and I have
Speaker:experiences. And most importantly,
Speaker:I have stories as do all of you that you can
Speaker:share in a way that will teach a lesson.
Speaker:So let me give some examples to your audience,
Speaker:because I know that you attract a lot of creators.
Speaker:So for example,
Speaker:if remind me of the woman up the street with the
Speaker:yarn shop,
Speaker:Olivia yeah.
Speaker:Olivia. So she is the shop owner that teaches people,
Speaker:not only how to knit and she does workshops and she
Speaker:sells gorgeous yarn,
Speaker:just simply doing a fun boomerang of her threading.
Speaker:A needle is interesting on Instagram stories,
Speaker:which by the way,
Speaker:boomerangs like my favorite clips,
Speaker:they're so fun,
Speaker:but she could literally show us what life looks like.
Speaker:The second she gets some shipment in the store and how
Speaker:she merchandises it,
Speaker:or maybe what she makes and how that yarn turns into
Speaker:a product,
Speaker:or maybe one of the behind the scenes of her workshop
Speaker:and all the things that she has ready for people that
Speaker:do the workshop.
Speaker:Maybe she puts out bottled water.
Speaker:She buys certain candy that she can tag from a store
Speaker:up the street.
Speaker:Like if you have a physical location,
Speaker:tagging other businesses in and around your area is a great
Speaker:way to grow your sphere of influence too.
Speaker:And that's collaborative and that's building community as well.
Speaker:So Olivia now has per shipment at pitcher six people in
Speaker:a workshop,
Speaker:Olivia so generous and nice.
Speaker:I'm sure she bought water or maybe coffee.
Speaker:And she had candy up the street,
Speaker:she got candy and she maybe even gave everybody a notebook
Speaker:to write notes.
Speaker:So tagging those and showing that behind the scenes and geo-tagging
Speaker:it. So here's the magic Sue on Instagram stories in the
Speaker:sticker icon.
Speaker:And if no,
Speaker:one's seeing the sticker next to the writing tool,
Speaker:you need to update your Instagram app.
Speaker:But the stickers is where you can stamp the time of
Speaker:day where you're located in the weather.
Speaker:And you might say like,
Speaker:who the hell cares about the weather or the time of
Speaker:day? Well,
Speaker:it makes for an interesting story.
Speaker:If you're up at five 30 in the morning,
Speaker:hustling hard,
Speaker:doing your workout,
Speaker:like chase Jarvis,
Speaker:who I love.
Speaker:He's like my favorite Instagram stories account to follow.
Speaker:He takes you with him throughout the day.
Speaker:You see what time he wakes up and you see when
Speaker:he's done,
Speaker:like hustling hard.
Speaker:I liked that.
Speaker:Yeah. I want to say something here before we get off
Speaker:of Olivia and Jace,
Speaker:because some of that stuff might look just routine.
Speaker:And I think first off it has to be a mindset
Speaker:that you're always looking for those opportunities of what you can
Speaker:pull into a story.
Speaker:And I would guess over time,
Speaker:these ideas and these things come easier.
Speaker:However, and this was one of my questions for you is,
Speaker:you know,
Speaker:you see people who are showing you a picture of what
Speaker:they had for lunch,
Speaker:or they might be getting close to something good.
Speaker:And I'll call myself guilty.
Speaker:I am no pro at this yet,
Speaker:but it might be a picture of a book that they're
Speaker:reading. That could be a really good story,
Speaker:but it's all just blah.
Speaker:Yeah. That's like Snapchat.
Speaker:Like I don't want to see any of that.
Speaker:It's boring.
Speaker:If you show a book,
Speaker:you have a book,
Speaker:talk about why you love it or what you learn.
Speaker:Don't just show the book.
Speaker:Like, I don't care that you're reading a book and I
Speaker:don't care that you're having a taco And this could be
Speaker:where the boomerang comes in or like you've just been talking
Speaker:stickers and I want to get back onto all those creative
Speaker:things that you can do,
Speaker:because I think the content is one thing.
Speaker:It's how you visibly then show it is on hold and
Speaker:other thing.
Speaker:Yeah. So let's just stay on this for a second.
Speaker:Cause there's a reason I'm going down this path here.
Speaker:So with the stickers,
Speaker:which is one of the creative elements in Instagram stories,
Speaker:there are stickers that often when you tap it,
Speaker:it turns into another sticker.
Speaker:Sometimes three different stickers,
Speaker:same thing.
Speaker:Like now they have every day of the week.
Speaker:So I love this.
Speaker:So now I'm,
Speaker:timestamping my story.
Speaker:You know,
Speaker:when a Tuesday story ends and when a Wednesday story begins.
Speaker:So everyday I'm day stamping,
Speaker:sometimes I'm timestamping but day stamping for sure.
Speaker:Cause I want people to know,
Speaker:Oh, that was yesterday or that's today,
Speaker:especially when you're sharing content,
Speaker:that might be time sensitive.
Speaker:Like you're going live on Instagram live and it's today.
Speaker:You should let people know what day it is.
Speaker:But the location too is key because here I live in
Speaker:downtown Boston in this building called millennium tower and I stamp
Speaker:and tag the tower or I tag downtown Boston.
Speaker:And I also use that as a geo tag on my
Speaker:Instagram posts,
Speaker:which by the way,
Speaker:listeners, you get 79% more engagement when you geotag on Instagram.
Speaker:So you don't want to geotag your house obviously,
Speaker:but you can do a tag,
Speaker:the city,
Speaker:the town,
Speaker:the state,
Speaker:the country.
Speaker:So I put a sticker and this restaurant across the street,
Speaker:merchant restaurant,
Speaker:like 12 steps across the street,
Speaker:sorry, in the geotag hub,
Speaker:which happens when you do that on Instagram.
Speaker:And when they clicked into my geo tag,
Speaker:they saw me,
Speaker:they discovered me.
Speaker:And they're like,
Speaker:who is this influencer that teaches Instagram marketing.
Speaker:We want her in our restaurant to do on Instagram stories.
Speaker:So they sent me an Instagram direct message and invited me
Speaker:for dinner and you know,
Speaker:to competent.
Speaker:And I'm like,
Speaker:can I bring my husband?
Speaker:They're like,
Speaker:sure, drinks,
Speaker:dinner, dessert,
Speaker:$150 later.
Speaker:Totally comped.
Speaker:My husband looks at me and he's like,
Speaker:can you do more Of this kind of stuff?
Speaker:And That was the power of an Instagram story tags.
Speaker:So tagging your location.
Speaker:And I did it this morning when I got coffee,
Speaker:I didn't tag downtown Boston.
Speaker:I geo tagged the coffee shop.
Speaker:So what's going to happen.
Speaker:They're going to get a notification.
Speaker:And they might say,
Speaker:gosh, she lives really close to us.
Speaker:Maybe we'll give her a free coffee for the week and
Speaker:she can do something for us.
Speaker:It's a way to start a partnership collaboration.
Speaker:So that's the sticker.
Speaker:Sue, let's talk about the writing tools because I know that
Speaker:your audience is creative.
Speaker:So I used to teach scrapbooking.
Speaker:You guys.
Speaker:So I'm like Instagram stories has all the things I love
Speaker:except the glitter.
Speaker:I don't have any glitter,
Speaker:but it has the highlighter.
Speaker:Just you wait.
Speaker:Some of those stickers will someday explode to gutters.
Speaker:Exactly. So the writing tools,
Speaker:you have three writing tools.
Speaker:You have the medium-sized Sharpie on the left.
Speaker:You have the one with the edge in the middle and
Speaker:on the right.
Speaker:You have the highlighter.
Speaker:And when you tap on each of those,
Speaker:it turns white.
Speaker:And that way,
Speaker:you know what tool you're working in.
Speaker:So you can also change the thickness and the fineness of
Speaker:the writing tool.
Speaker:Now I only use three colors.
Speaker:I use purple magenta and blue.
Speaker:Why? Because their colors in the Instagram logo,
Speaker:I always want to stay top of mind as someone who
Speaker:teaches Instagram marketing for business.
Speaker:And by choosing these colors,
Speaker:it's on point with the way my feed looks,
Speaker:my personality,
Speaker:my bright colors.
Speaker:And it makes it really easy to know exactly what color
Speaker:I'm going to be using.
Speaker:So less is better here.
Speaker:There's 27 colors,
Speaker:but here's what your listeners need to know.
Speaker:So when you tap on a color,
Speaker:any color,
Speaker:the whole color spectrum.
Speaker:So you can have your own branded.
Speaker:If you have a hex color.
Speaker:Yeah, Exactly.
Speaker:Now I believe that Instagram will eventually let you save that
Speaker:hex color,
Speaker:but it's not there yet as a feature.
Speaker:That's what I'm hoping for.
Speaker:Okay. So now we've talked about the stickers,
Speaker:the writing tools.
Speaker:Let's talk about the highlighters.
Speaker:So same rules apply for me with intention,
Speaker:with the highlighter.
Speaker:I only use the magenta highlighter.
Speaker:I don't use any other colors to highlight makes it really
Speaker:easy. So when you use a highlighter,
Speaker:it can add like a light effect to your clip.
Speaker:Like as if there's lights turned on,
Speaker:you can get super creative with the writing tools.
Speaker:Let's just say that.
Speaker:And I know that you've been following me,
Speaker:Sue, so you see how creative I can get So creative.
Speaker:I want you also,
Speaker:I'm not sure where you're going,
Speaker:but I want to make sure we also cover video and
Speaker:hands-free video.
Speaker:Yeah, let's do that.
Speaker:And what I suggest that you do,
Speaker:Sue, do you put visuals in your show notes or just
Speaker:linked? I put links,
Speaker:but I can put pictures.
Speaker:You tell me what you want to do and I'll try
Speaker:and make it.
Speaker:It work well.
Speaker:I will download my clip of me about you so that
Speaker:people can have that link so that you can share that.
Speaker:So video clips,
Speaker:like we said are 15 seconds.
Speaker:So often for those of you that are like,
Speaker:gosh, I don't have the time to do this.
Speaker:Any of the clips that you create,
Speaker:an Instagram stories you can download and save to your camera
Speaker:roll. And one of the features that I love and Instagram
Speaker:stories that does not happen on the phone is you can
Speaker:switch from front facing out and within the story,
Speaker:you can't do that when you're on video on your iPhone.
Speaker:So I'll do a 15 second clip and often I'll flip
Speaker:the camera out.
Speaker:So I'm talking,
Speaker:but then I want to show you something that I'm looking
Speaker:at. So that is awesome.
Speaker:And you can do that whole clip.
Speaker:Sue mentioned hands-free.
Speaker:So when you scroll all the way to the end,
Speaker:another recent update,
Speaker:you can be hands-free now my buddies over at our con
Speaker:Mount two,
Speaker:if you can link up our con Mount and you can
Speaker:find the links,
Speaker:there's two items there,
Speaker:handheld amount that I always talk about.
Speaker:I don't know the item number,
Speaker:but you know which one I'm talking about.
Speaker:Cause you always see me with it and their new diva
Speaker:ring. It's under $15.
Speaker:And if you use the code to B S U E
Speaker:B E you'll get 20% off anything.
Speaker:And those are my two go-to items.
Speaker:Whenever I travel,
Speaker:I always have a steady place to put my phone.
Speaker:So if I want to go hands-free I can just tap
Speaker:on that for all you bakers and makers out there,
Speaker:you can do something and use your hands and step away
Speaker:and teach something in a really creative way.
Speaker:When you're hands free,
Speaker:you see the rainbow ring filling up and you know how
Speaker:much time you have left till it's 15 seconds.
Speaker:So you just need to keep your eye on the rainbow
Speaker:ring as it fills up.
Speaker:And it lets you know,
Speaker:when it's ended.
Speaker:Perfect. I have one point of clarification because I did not
Speaker:understand this.
Speaker:Maybe all you listeners did,
Speaker:but I did not.
Speaker:When you're talking about switching the camera,
Speaker:you're saying you can't do it from your phone.
Speaker:You can't do it in my regular phone.
Speaker:Like when I'm on video in my camera setting on my
Speaker:iPhone and I'm talking,
Speaker:there's no opportunity for me to flip it When you're just
Speaker:doing regular old video,
Speaker:nothing to do with Instagram,
Speaker:Nothing to do with Instagram.
Speaker:Right? And so that's one of the reasons I love Instagram
Speaker:stories, videos,
Speaker:because I can create it and I can flip it.
Speaker:And so often SU I use Instagram stories to create something
Speaker:like that,
Speaker:save it to my camera roll.
Speaker:And I just might tweet it.
Speaker:That's a super Ninja trick.
Speaker:So anything more in terms of the tools and the creative
Speaker:things that are specifically in the Instagram stories app,
Speaker:anything else we should.
Speaker:I just think your listeners should pay attention to holidays because
Speaker:that's when stickers are released.
Speaker:And I know a lot of your listeners are gift business
Speaker:related, obviously.
Speaker:So for Easter,
Speaker:what's the next holiday coming up.
Speaker:We've got mother's day coming up mother's day.
Speaker:So I'm sure there's going to be mother's day stamps.
Speaker:I love my mom.
Speaker:Cheers to mom.
Speaker:You're going to see roses.
Speaker:Some other stuff.
Speaker:Part of the fun is to see what other things they're
Speaker:going to come up with.
Speaker:Oh, I know no kidding.
Speaker:It's like getting a new pack of stickers when you were
Speaker:a kid at the store.
Speaker:That's the whole story too.
Speaker:Look what we have.
Speaker:Exactly. I think that's good.
Speaker:We talked about filters.
Speaker:The filters in Instagram are not Instagram stories are not that
Speaker:great. I talked about the black and white.
Speaker:One of the things I want your listeners to know as
Speaker:an into tip is that you can create something in any
Speaker:other app and download it.
Speaker:So Animoto diptych anything from Snapchat,
Speaker:download it and you can upload it to your Instagram stories.
Speaker:So I like everyone else loved some of the filters in
Speaker:Snapchat. And so you can do that.
Speaker:You can add a Snapchat filter in your Instagram story And
Speaker:you can only access uploads from your camera roll for 24
Speaker:hours too.
Speaker:Is that correct?
Speaker:But there are a few workarounds with that.
Speaker:You can text yourself the photo or the video.
Speaker:Just Duplicate the picture.
Speaker:I've done that before.
Speaker:Yeah, you can do that,
Speaker:but you can,
Speaker:if it's a video you can use airdrop or you can
Speaker:text it to yourself.
Speaker:Gotcha. So you can't access everything in your camera roll,
Speaker:but if you reengage it into your camera roll,
Speaker:then you have access.
Speaker:Is it still you just swipe from the top and then
Speaker:you can see what's in your camera roll.
Speaker:Is it still that way?
Speaker:So Do you have to tap on the screen and lift
Speaker:up and now it's on the bottom.
Speaker:Okay. Okay.
Speaker:Gotcha. I'm getting re-energized to do stories better.
Speaker:I'll tell you that.
Speaker:Yeah. All right.
Speaker:Let's talk about what takeovers are.
Speaker:Okay. So I've had the pleasure of doing many.
Speaker:I've done.
Speaker:I'm going to name these brands because these are really good
Speaker:brands for your audience to follow on Instagram.
Speaker:So later media is one of them.
Speaker:Social bakers with an S is another Adobe social media examiner.
Speaker:Who else did I do recently?
Speaker:I've done so many casual Fridays.
Speaker:One of my favorite podcasters,
Speaker:you know,
Speaker:Tyler Anderson,
Speaker:right. And buffer.
Speaker:I've done buffer.
Speaker:So these are all big brands.
Speaker:So the reason I want to mention this is because it's
Speaker:important to line up with other brands that can give you
Speaker:new exposure.
Speaker:So I love doing stories.
Speaker:They loved having me do the stories because they have someone
Speaker:entertaining their audience.
Speaker:Oh my gosh.
Speaker:So when I did laters takeover,
Speaker:I got like 5,000
Speaker:views. Oh my gosh.
Speaker:It was crazy.
Speaker:So what we do with everyone,
Speaker:I listed,
Speaker:I had to basically either sign a contract or just,
Speaker:I had to get a password to log in as them
Speaker:social bakers did something really smart.
Speaker:They didn't want to give me a password there in London.
Speaker:Totally understand.
Speaker:We created a Dropbox folder and I sent them each of
Speaker:my clips in order.
Speaker:But not only did I send them each of my clips
Speaker:in order,
Speaker:I sent them a duplicate of the clip,
Speaker:showing them exactly how I wanted them to use the stickers
Speaker:or the geo stickers.
Speaker:So they could do it on their end and they would
Speaker:be hyperlinked.
Speaker:So if I had sent them the clip with the geo
Speaker:tag or the ad mentioned,
Speaker:it wouldn't hyperlink.
Speaker:If they uploaded it.
Speaker:So they needed to do it on their end.
Speaker:Does that make sense?
Speaker:Got it.
Speaker:Did you give them access to,
Speaker:you Know,
Speaker:I did it for them.
Speaker:No, one's taken over my account yet.
Speaker:I haven't done it for anybody yet.
Speaker:No, one's taken over my Instagram account.
Speaker:Oh, I thought it was always a swap.
Speaker:No, they all wanted me.
Speaker:They're like Sue,
Speaker:we love you.
Speaker:You're so funny.
Speaker:So give biz listeners in case you don't know what we're
Speaker:talking about a is when someone other than the account owner
Speaker:gets on for usually it's a day.
Speaker:So what Suby was doing is going over and actually hosting
Speaker:her information on these other platforms.
Speaker:So it's exciting.
Speaker:It's a way to switch up,
Speaker:introduce, share other people,
Speaker:collaborate with others.
Speaker:You know what else?
Speaker:Yeah. That is interesting how they're giving you access.
Speaker:Cause that makes sense.
Speaker:Totally. For other brands.
Speaker:Oh yeah.
Speaker:They all created a special password for me.
Speaker:And take note never,
Speaker:ever logged back on with the same password.
Speaker:That's setting yourself up for losing your password.
Speaker:Okay. So the big question,
Speaker:because all of this is fun.
Speaker:We can hear it in your voice,
Speaker:how much you like doing it.
Speaker:What are you seen in terms of a business result with
Speaker:this overall summary?
Speaker:Oh my goodness.
Speaker:So my sphere of influence has grown to new audiences because
Speaker:when you do Instagram stories,
Speaker:you can get discovered in the explore tabs and people can
Speaker:watch your stories without necessarily following you.
Speaker:They can stumble upon you.
Speaker:Okay? So here's what everyone needs to know based on your
Speaker:engagement on Instagram.
Speaker:So if you're engaging in content,
Speaker:that is just your friends and family,
Speaker:they're going to show you more of that kind of content.
Speaker:So coffee nails,
Speaker:or making vacations,
Speaker:yoga, all that.
Speaker:If you're engaging on accounts,
Speaker:meaning double tapping,
Speaker:commenting, saving post you on accounts where your ideal customer or
Speaker:client is hanging out,
Speaker:Instagram will show you more of that.
Speaker:So I often am found in the explore tab as a
Speaker:story to follow.
Speaker:If you're interested in Instagram marketing or small business or being
Speaker:a creator or a solopreneur mompreneur I get suggested you're not
Speaker:going to get suggested if you don't do stories.
Speaker:Okay? So we've sparked the interest of some people check out
Speaker:stories and maybe start doing them.
Speaker:What are a couple of first steps that they should do?
Speaker:Let's just make the assumption that they're already on Instagram.
Speaker:What tomorrow could they start doing?
Speaker:So they could start doing this story and you can always
Speaker:delete what you're doing.
Speaker:If you don't like it.
Speaker:I say,
Speaker:go buy some post-it notes and storyboard your story so that
Speaker:you write it out.
Speaker:Each clip is a post-it note.
Speaker:And I actually did that when I took,
Speaker:did an Instagram takeover,
Speaker:I did a storyboard for social bakers because they wanted me
Speaker:to teach six tips of how to do Instagram stories.
Speaker:And I needed to tell them how many clips I was
Speaker:going to do it in.
Speaker:So I had a storyboard.
Speaker:Okay. So number one is storyboard.
Speaker:And so you have an overall message that you're sending,
Speaker:then you storyboard.
Speaker:How many sections,
Speaker:what would you recommend in terms of,
Speaker:for someone starting the very first,
Speaker:Under a minute?
Speaker:For sure.
Speaker:Remember that each clip is 15 seconds.
Speaker:So four to five.
Speaker:Yeah. I mean,
Speaker:you can do a story in two clips.
Speaker:My daughter Laila at freshmen and fearless,
Speaker:she did a two clip story.
Speaker:It was brilliant.
Speaker:She showed us a bird's eye view of her holding an
Speaker:arc-on Mount with her feet walking.
Speaker:And she said YouTube day and on the next,
Speaker:in the next clip,
Speaker:she had her headphones on with the mountain,
Speaker:her hand and she gave a peace sign.
Speaker:So what did that do?
Speaker:She let you know she's on YouTube.
Speaker:So now you go and check out our YouTube channel and
Speaker:she's showing you that she's like creating videos.
Speaker:So you're curious,
Speaker:you want to know like what videos is she creating?
Speaker:There's an intrigue.
Speaker:You don't have to finish the whole story.
Speaker:You just need to give value or just interest.
Speaker:Perfect example.
Speaker:Okay. So storyboard then actually create the stories,
Speaker:right? Yeah.
Speaker:Test around,
Speaker:play with the stickers in the wording on at least one
Speaker:of those clips.
Speaker:Sometimes people just upload a picture to me that's a little
Speaker:bit boring,
Speaker:but if you're just getting started,
Speaker:you know,
Speaker:anything just to take the action and get started,
Speaker:we can always get better over time.
Speaker:I'm speaking to myself here as well.
Speaker:And then I think what the third one would be maybe
Speaker:Sue, correct me.
Speaker:If I'm wrong is see,
Speaker:who's watched and direct message back to one or two people
Speaker:to start getting a flow,
Speaker:going Direct message back.
Speaker:If it makes sense,
Speaker:like if you asked a question and you want to know
Speaker:what their takeaway was not.
Speaker:Thanks for watching my story.
Speaker:If you just did a story,
Speaker:it has to have context for sure.
Speaker:Okay. Well what about when they're just starting?
Speaker:If, if one of their friends watches direct message,
Speaker:just to get the feel for how to say,
Speaker:what did you think of that?
Speaker:Did, did it give value?
Speaker:Did you like it?
Speaker:Do you want to see more of that?
Speaker:Does that make sense?
Speaker:Yeah. I mean,
Speaker:obviously the message is different.
Speaker:If it's a friend versus a business,
Speaker:you're not going to do that necessarily.
Speaker:It depends where it's appropriate.
Speaker:I guess I'd say yeah.
Speaker:Real quick direction on direct messaging.
Speaker:How do you do that?
Speaker:Oh my gosh.
Speaker:So direct messaging is everything I always say go down in
Speaker:the DM.
Speaker:That's where all the action is,
Speaker:baby. You and Gary V the same thing,
Speaker:right? Oh my God.
Speaker:I didn't know that.
Speaker:He said that.
Speaker:He says the same thing.
Speaker:Yeah. I have not.
Speaker:I've been listening to him lately because I think he gives
Speaker:way too many call to actions in his stories now.
Speaker:So yeah,
Speaker:because the DMS is where the real gold is because it's
Speaker:a one-to-one conversation now,
Speaker:instead of one to millions,
Speaker:when someone replies to a story,
Speaker:they basically gave you permission to respond back.
Speaker:And so now it's your move.
Speaker:How are you going to respond back?
Speaker:Don't start selling them some it's finding out more about them.
Speaker:Okay. And then on the phone,
Speaker:where is the icon to get to the direct messages,
Speaker:to be able to send a message?
Speaker:Oh, it's the same Notifications light up on your phone and
Speaker:it's at the top,
Speaker:right? Same notification place.
Speaker:All right.
Speaker:Give biz listeners,
Speaker:just pull out your phone,
Speaker:get into Instagram.
Speaker:All the stories are up on the top.
Speaker:Look at some stories,
Speaker:follow Sue,
Speaker:because you've got to see her level of creativity.
Speaker:And I say overall entertainment.
Speaker:I mean,
Speaker:they are just fun to watch,
Speaker:but it's a great learning environment.
Speaker:At the same time,
Speaker:you're going to learn more about Instagram.
Speaker:I'm going to learn how to do Instagram stories and what
Speaker:all the different tools can be.
Speaker:And just follow by example with her and then play around
Speaker:with the buttons because there is a lot available.
Speaker:But once you start knowing this little place does this,
Speaker:if I touch here,
Speaker:it does this.
Speaker:It's not really that bad.
Speaker:It's not hard to figure out just experiment.
Speaker:You're not going to really do anything wrong.
Speaker:Right? Okay.
Speaker:Before we wind up,
Speaker:Sue, tell us what you have coming up.
Speaker:Do a little self promo here.
Speaker:Before I go into that.
Speaker:Let me just direct your listeners to a couple places where
Speaker:they can get free content.
Speaker:Obviously on my blog,
Speaker:we've got a great blog.
Speaker:Sue B zimmerman.com
Speaker:and articles about all and everything you need to know about
Speaker:Instagram. We also have a YouTube channel.
Speaker:So go ahead and subscribe because when you do,
Speaker:you'll get a notification.
Speaker:Every time I post,
Speaker:which is typically weekly.
Speaker:And then I want to invite you to my free.
Speaker:And Sue knows about this.
Speaker:Cause she's in it.
Speaker:Facebook group called Instagram Results for business,
Speaker:where I have over 6,100
Speaker:awesome entrepreneurs in that group.
Speaker:So those are all the free places to go.
Speaker:We have downloads for hashtags.
Speaker:If you have a hashtag headache,
Speaker:I'm Sue B zimmerman.com/h
Speaker:H more important and specific to this is our Instagram story.
Speaker:So Sue B zimmerman.com/stories
Speaker:with an S class.
Speaker:That's what I mentioned earlier,
Speaker:Sue, which I think your listeners will really appreciate.
Speaker:Cause it's under $20 that really gets them going.
Speaker:And then,
Speaker:so I'm going to send you a link for all your
Speaker:listeners to get our free 20 page guide that I want
Speaker:to create a custom link for you,
Speaker:which I haven't done that yet.
Speaker:Oh, thank you very much gifts here for us,
Speaker:everybody fabulous.
Speaker:We all know now why do the Instagram expert to be,
Speaker:if there are people here who are just listening for the
Speaker:first time and didn't know you,
Speaker:it is very clear.
Speaker:You've given us such great information.
Speaker:I really hope that we've convinced you.
Speaker:I know,
Speaker:like I said before,
Speaker:I need to get better at doing this and I'm going
Speaker:to integrate it into my days,
Speaker:but there's a good reason to do Instagram stories.
Speaker:It's not as populated a platform yet.
Speaker:And the ability to get visibility in a creative way.
Speaker:That's not salesy because I know we're all sensitive to that.
Speaker:Exactly. One more thing.
Speaker:I want you to do Sue for your listeners.
Speaker:That's fun.
Speaker:But after you finish what you're saying,
Speaker:I was just going to say,
Speaker:this makes so much sense.
Speaker:So really don't just get off of this podcast and put
Speaker:it aside and say,
Speaker:yeah, that was fun information.
Speaker:Pick up your phone,
Speaker:pull up the Instagram account,
Speaker:follow Sue.
Speaker:And I'm not saying that to continue to get everyone over
Speaker:to you,
Speaker:Sue. I don't want it to sound that way.
Speaker:Do you guys,
Speaker:but I want you to do it just by way of
Speaker:example, because it's the best way to see how to do
Speaker:it. Well.
Speaker:And so what else were you going to say before we
Speaker:close? You know,
Speaker:me? I like for people to take action.
Speaker:So for those of you listening to this podcast and you
Speaker:love it,
Speaker:obviously if you're working out,
Speaker:get off the treadmill or wait till after your workout,
Speaker:if you're driving,
Speaker:don't pull over Sue and I want to see a selfie
Speaker:or a Deskie or something from you,
Speaker:knowing that you listened to this.
Speaker:And the way that I like to give people this challenge
Speaker:too, is to have them at mention you gift biz gal,
Speaker:that is your business Instagram account.
Speaker:And add mentioned me,
Speaker:the Instagram expert.
Speaker:When you post on Instagram,
Speaker:like a takeaway,
Speaker:something visual that you can share with the takeaway and use
Speaker:the hashtag Sue B made me do it because that hashtag
Speaker:Sue has over a thousand people that took the hashtag Sue
Speaker:B made me do a challenge.
Speaker:And here's the thing that everyone needs to know when you
Speaker:use that hashtag on Instagram and do this,
Speaker:you'll be able to click into it and see everyone else
Speaker:who took the challenge.
Speaker:And there just might be your ideal customer or client,
Speaker:right in that hashtag hub waiting For you.
Speaker:That hashtag hub is so fun.
Speaker:I remember the photo that I've put in.
Speaker:I might've put a couple of things in there.
Speaker:I'm not sure,
Speaker:but the first one you,
Speaker:I mean,
Speaker:because you challenge people to do such fun thing.
Speaker:So just even looking through that is a riot.
Speaker:It puts a smile on my face.
Speaker:I think when people listen to podcasts,
Speaker:if you want people to take action,
Speaker:you got to tell them,
Speaker:I mean,
Speaker:otherwise they're just going to consume the content and go on
Speaker:their Merry day.
Speaker:I want to see you guys,
Speaker:everyone listening.
Speaker:I want to see you.
Speaker:I want to connect with you.
Speaker:That's how we all grow our businesses.
Speaker:Yes, Absolutely.
Speaker:Thank you so much.
Speaker:When you talk about shining the light on others and the
Speaker:light shines on you,
Speaker:that is absolutely what you stand for each and every day.
Speaker:I really appreciate your coming on wealth of knowledge,
Speaker:no surprise.
Speaker:And you deliver.
Speaker:Thank you.
Speaker:And I know I'm going to be seeing you,
