Speaker:So don't delay to join the group,
Speaker:go over to gift biz,
Speaker:breeze.com. I look forward to seeing you over there,
Speaker:but for now,
Speaker:let's get onto the show today.
Speaker:We're going to talk about,
Speaker:About holiday gifting for your business,
Speaker:from a different angle.
Speaker:Normally, when you think about the holiday season,
Speaker:the focus is on what promotions am I going to do?
Speaker:What networking events am I going to attend?
Speaker:How am I going to attract people into my business to
Speaker:buy my products and services as holiday gifts?
Speaker:So this time we're going to switch it up because there's
Speaker:a whole nother side of this that we need to consider.
Speaker:And that is what are you doing as a business owner
Speaker:in terms of giving holiday gifts.
Speaker:This podcast is part of a mini two part series on
Speaker:the holidays.
Speaker:If you will,
Speaker:the prior podcast talked about holiday promotions and what you should
Speaker:be doing with holiday promotions and how to enhance and get
Speaker:the most mileage out of whatever you're doing,
Speaker:not just for this year,
Speaker:but to make yourself even better for the following year.
Speaker:If you haven't caught that episode yet,
Speaker:it's number one 37.
Speaker:So the one right before this one,
Speaker:and I encourage you to jump over and take a listen
Speaker:to that one.
Speaker:But again,
Speaker:today, we're talking about holiday gifting for your business in terms
Speaker:of the holiday gifts that you should be sending.
Speaker:I think the best way to start off with this is
Speaker:why should you be doing it in the first place?
Speaker:And honestly,
Speaker:we need to turn the mirror to ourself it's for same
Speaker:reason why we're telling our corporate accounts that they should be
Speaker:doing a gifting program,
Speaker:or we're telling customers that are coming into our shop.
Speaker:They're shopping for gifts for similar reasons.
Speaker:And the reasons really are to show the importance of various
Speaker:people in our life.
Speaker:And clearly in our business,
Speaker:we have many of them and we're going to be talking
Speaker:about them in a minute.
Speaker:And during the holiday,
Speaker:it's really important and valuable to recognize those people who are
Speaker:special to you,
Speaker:people who have provided services for your business,
Speaker:which would be employees and also vendors,
Speaker:and then also the all-important and obvious customers where you are
Speaker:getting revenue into your business so that you're going to be
Speaker:able to stay open.
Speaker:The problem often becomes,
Speaker:we think of it at the last moment,
Speaker:because as I was mentioning at the top of the show,
Speaker:we're usually thinking about how are we gonna attract people into
Speaker:buy our things,
Speaker:but there's a certain way and a certain really easy system
Speaker:that allows you to plan how you're going to be doing
Speaker:gifting. And it's important because if you don't think of this
Speaker:till the end,
Speaker:when you're in the middle of a stressful holiday season and
Speaker:all of a sudden it's like,
Speaker:Oh my gosh,
Speaker:what about the holiday gifts that I need to be sending
Speaker:out? If you think of it,
Speaker:then you're rushing through.
Speaker:You're clearly going to spend more money.
Speaker:You're probably not going to get the best gifts that you
Speaker:could get in terms of the impact and the symbolism that
Speaker:you would want.
Speaker:And it's just going to be one big mess.
Speaker:There's no plan.
Speaker:It'll all be done on the spring.
Speaker:The moment you won't get the right gifts and you're definitely
Speaker:gonna spend more money.
Speaker:So yeah,
Speaker:Much better to think about it beforehand and to actually have
Speaker:a plan.
Speaker:So I've put together for you four steps of a holiday
Speaker:gifting plan that I've used.
Speaker:I'm going to say for the last,
Speaker:wow, 10,
Speaker:12 years ever since I started my gift basket business way
Speaker:back when,
Speaker:and it made things so much easier because I first didn't
Speaker:forget anybody.
Speaker:I knew exactly how much I was going to be spending
Speaker:and where it was going to go and just tracked everything.
Speaker:So let me share with you this plan.
Speaker:I did make a worksheet that accompanies this podcast so that
Speaker:you don't have to create anything from a blank piece of
Speaker:paper. You'll be able to just follow along and fill in
Speaker:the blanks in terms of what you need to be doing
Speaker:versus creating a system similar to mine.
Speaker:So to grab that freebie,
Speaker:you'll go to gift biz on rap.com
Speaker:forward slash one,
Speaker:three eight,
Speaker:and you can automatically get that worksheet,
Speaker:but let's get started now with the plan.
Speaker:Step number one,
Speaker:the very first thing to do is to set a budget.
Speaker:How much can you afford to spend or want to spend
Speaker:on holiday gifts in total?
Speaker:This is your overriding Budget.
Speaker:Now, before I got behind the mic,
Speaker:I jumped Onto Google real fast to see if there was
Speaker:any type of a guideline of how much people spend,
Speaker:like what percentage of overall sales would you suggest for holiday
Speaker:gifts? And honestly,
Speaker:I didn't find anything that I felt was really representative for
Speaker:us here.
Speaker:So going back to,
Speaker:should it be a certain percentage of revenue coming in?
Speaker:Should it be a certain dollar amount?
Speaker:Overall? My best advice for you is to put down a
Speaker:number that you feel comfortable with,
Speaker:that isn't going to stretch you too far.
Speaker:You know how the numbers fall within your business.
Speaker:So put down something that is going to work for you
Speaker:and that you feel good about.
Speaker:All right,
Speaker:so now you've got a dollar value set.
Speaker:This is the overall total amount that you're going to spend
Speaker:for the holidays.
Speaker:And I'm going to lay down some tough love here.
Speaker:You cannot exceed that amount no matter what you do.
Speaker:That's the reason to have a plan.
Speaker:So you're not overspending.
Speaker:And there are lots of things that you can do that
Speaker:don't have to cost money,
Speaker:but will be on this worksheet because you want to again,
Speaker:recognize everybody in your life who has helped contribute to the
Speaker:starting and growing of your business.
Speaker:All right.
Speaker:So number one,
Speaker:you've got that budget number set.
Speaker:Step number two is to create three different lists.
Speaker:And all you're doing right here is your identifying.
Speaker:All of the people that you want to give gifts to
Speaker:the first list is your employees.
Speaker:This will include people who aren't necessarily,
Speaker:even in your Office space.
Speaker:Maybe you have a virtual assistant,
Speaker:possibly You've outsourced some services such as your social media or
Speaker:your accounting,
Speaker:or you have someone who does your taxes.
Speaker:All of those types of people you want to put down
Speaker:here, they're on your team and they are part of your
Speaker:business. It is Oh,
Speaker:so important that you recognize them and show them how much
Speaker:you appreciate their participation and dedication to their work.
Speaker:The second list is vendors.
Speaker:So these are people,
Speaker:obviously who you have been purchasing product or supplies from.
Speaker:And also people that you've been purchasing services from.
Speaker:Think about how you're getting your delivery done.
Speaker:Maybe you want to include your mail carrier,
Speaker:your ups or federal express person.
Speaker:Also think throughout the year,
Speaker:has there been somebody who really helped you out in a
Speaker:point of need,
Speaker:maybe you needed a rush package sent out or something extra
Speaker:special, put a little star by their name because you want
Speaker:to make sure to remember,
Speaker:to mention that you recognize and appreciate the help that they
Speaker:gave you for that certain event.
Speaker:So that's the second list.
Speaker:So we've got an,
Speaker:a list for employees.
Speaker:We've got a list for vendors,
Speaker:and now we're going to move on to a list for
Speaker:customers. Now you may be saying,
Speaker:Oh my gosh,
Speaker:that one going to be so hard.
Speaker:I have so,
Speaker:so, so many customers,
Speaker:how am I ever going to recognize our list?
Speaker:All of them,
Speaker:don't worry.
Speaker:I've got you covered.
Speaker:I have approached this in a couple of different ways with
Speaker:my past businesses.
Speaker:And one of the things that I found really helps with
Speaker:this Is if you put customers Into tears,
Speaker:for example,
Speaker:if you have a lot of customers,
Speaker:if you don't,
Speaker:if you're still smaller and you're growing and you have,
Speaker:I don't know,
Speaker:10, 20 customers,
Speaker:that's real easy.
Speaker:You can just list all their names.
Speaker:If you're into the hundreds or thousands of customers,
Speaker:then this tearing idea really helps.
Speaker:Let me share with you the way I did it.
Speaker:My first tier was by revenue.
Speaker:Let's face it,
Speaker:Even though all customers are important and valuable,
Speaker:the ones that bring you in the most revenue,
Speaker:you do want to recognize they're special.
Speaker:They are holding your business together,
Speaker:or have possibly gotten you to a new revenue level within
Speaker:your business.
Speaker:So you want to look at them and say,
Speaker:thank you to them through a holiday gift.
Speaker:You can capture this information.
Speaker:If you haven't been already through whatever accounting program you're using.
Speaker:I happen to use QuickBooks and identify who the top,
Speaker:let's say,
Speaker:10 clients are for you by revenue.
Speaker:So that would be put on your tier one list.
Speaker:Tier two is kind of an intermediary list.
Speaker:If you will,
Speaker:they may be up and coming customers of yours.
Speaker:They may be customers who have done some special things for
Speaker:you throughout the year.
Speaker:There may be different reasons.
Speaker:This is kind of a miscellaneous category of people that you
Speaker:still want to identify individually,
Speaker:or it could be another tier of revenue,
Speaker:any way you want to work.
Speaker:This of course is fine.
Speaker:And then the third tier would be all your other customers,
Speaker:because I kind of feel like no matter who their customers
Speaker:are, they should be getting some type of recognition from you.
Speaker:And this could be the tier where you're not spending as
Speaker:much money,
Speaker:but you're still able to identify and safe.
Speaker:Thank you.
Speaker:And I'll talk about this in a second.
Speaker:So to wrap up my step two,
Speaker:you're creating these three lists,
Speaker:employees, vendors,
Speaker:and customers,
Speaker:and then the customers are broken down into tiers.
Speaker:If you see that that's appropriate for your business,
Speaker:step number three now is to plan out your gifts.
Speaker:So you've got all The people you've now know that Quantity
Speaker:pretty much in terms of how many people there are.
Speaker:And the reason I say it that way is that tier
Speaker:three I was talking about could be a couple hundred people
Speaker:or maybe thousands of people,
Speaker:right? But you still want to identify that they're somebody that
Speaker:you want to pay attention to.
Speaker:Now you start breaking out.
Speaker:What am I getting these people?
Speaker:What are the gifts going to be?
Speaker:And you can approach this in a couple of ways.
Speaker:One way to first start breaking up the dollars into all
Speaker:of the different names and all of the different lists.
Speaker:Let's go back to the example,
Speaker:like if you'd set a budget of,
Speaker:let's say $200,
Speaker:so now you can start applying,
Speaker:okay, half that budget is going to go to my employees,
Speaker:for example,
Speaker:or 25 employees,
Speaker:25 vendors,
Speaker:50 customers,
Speaker:whatever it is,
Speaker:you get the ideas you break out and allocate dollars to
Speaker:your different lists.
Speaker:And then you also allocate dollars within the list.
Speaker:And this might sound a little confusing,
Speaker:but remember I told you that I have a worksheet that
Speaker:has already been created for you on this.
Speaker:You'll see what I mean,
Speaker:in terms of the dollar allocation,
Speaker:this is the best way to make sure that you don't
Speaker:go over budget because once you know how much you have
Speaker:that you can spend for somebody,
Speaker:then you can retrofit in gifts.
Speaker:That make sense.
Speaker:And honestly,
Speaker:I got to tell you,
Speaker:being recognized for the holiday and making that gesture outward of
Speaker:holiday greeting is so much more important than how much you
Speaker:spend on the gift.
Speaker:So remember that if it's a difference between sending out a
Speaker:gift at all,
Speaker:or sending out just a small gift,
Speaker:I would send out a small gift versus sending out nothing
Speaker:examples of things that you can do.
Speaker:I'm going to take it from the bottom.
Speaker:So let's say in tier three,
Speaker:that list,
Speaker:that exists of hundreds of customers,
Speaker:right? That may be just a very nice personal email greeting
Speaker:through whatever email system that you're using,
Speaker:constant contact,
Speaker:a Weber,
Speaker:whatever it is.
Speaker:That's a great way to cover a large group of people,
Speaker:but having done something for them,
Speaker:for the holidays and no cost to you.
Speaker:FYI, think about it.
Speaker:If you don't Put it down on the list,
Speaker:you might forget to do it.
Speaker:So just a nice email would be a gift.
Speaker:Okay? Then you can go up maybe for a certain tier.
Speaker:You're going to give cards.
Speaker:You're going to have cards printed from your business.
Speaker:And you're going to send out a nice card.
Speaker:That also is enough.
Speaker:You're recognizing and showing that you've taken special thought For somebody.
Speaker:So those May be some certain things that you do.
Speaker:Again, that don't cost a lot.
Speaker:I'll tell you something that we're doing right now over at
Speaker:the ribbon print company.
Speaker:And those of you who are customers of ours and are
Speaker:ordering, you already have seen some of this happening.
Speaker:But what I'll do is as I'm out at trade shows
Speaker:throughout the year,
Speaker:I'll find some product that I really like,
Speaker:and I will purchase.
Speaker:Normally they'll allow me to have it wholesale because I tell
Speaker:them what I'm doing.
Speaker:I'm including them in orders.
Speaker:When people are placing orders through the holiday season,
Speaker:we make a little nice message on printed ribbon and include
Speaker:a product in there.
Speaker:It's like a nice little treat.
Speaker:It gives that business,
Speaker:some extra visibility,
Speaker:and it's another way of us thanking and hopefully delighting our
Speaker:customers throughout the season.
Speaker:This is another example of an idea for you,
Speaker:especially if you are a wholesaler and you're in the consumable
Speaker:business. So gift basket people,
Speaker:you guys buy product for your stores that are consumables.
Speaker:That's the type of idea,
Speaker:something that you can do in terms of a gift.
Speaker:And then you go up again to the higher priced people,
Speaker:your employees,
Speaker:and possibly vendors for vendors,
Speaker:great gift cards,
Speaker:my postal carrier and ups guy who I adore.
Speaker:I'll give gift cards and then maybe a nice thing of
Speaker:chocolate or something fun throughout the holiday season.
Speaker:And also I have to say money,
Speaker:money goes a long way.
Speaker:Even if it can only be $20,
Speaker:it adds up because you know,
Speaker:a lot of other people will give money to,
Speaker:but some money in a nice card.
Speaker:Those are some,
Speaker:just some different ideas of the types of gifts that you
Speaker:can give.
Speaker:And then obviously for employees,
Speaker:anybody within your business bonuses are great.
Speaker:And if you know them and you're close with them,
Speaker:some type of a physical product as well,
Speaker:you know,
Speaker:that way better than I do based on who's in your
Speaker:business. But you see what I mean in terms of allocating
Speaker:the different dollar amounts and then what the gifts are going
Speaker:to be.
Speaker:And this helps so much too with direction when you're going
Speaker:out and you're thinking,
Speaker:Oh my gosh,
Speaker:okay. For my right-hand person,
Speaker:I need to get her something really special and I can
Speaker:spend $75 or whatever the dollar amount is going to be.
Speaker:Right. At least you've got some direction and you're not just
Speaker:haphazardly finding something.
Speaker:It's the last minute spending $300 when we really should have
Speaker:only spent 75 and then come January,
Speaker:you're in a whole heap of trouble and having to dig
Speaker:out right in the beginning of the year.
Speaker:Okay. And then finally,
Speaker:step number four is tracking all of your action towards completing
Speaker:your holiday gifting program.
Speaker:Again, within that free download that I've already told you about,
Speaker:there's a whole tracking form.
Speaker:So you've got all your lists and then the tracking form
Speaker:includes what your dollar allocation is,
Speaker:what gift you're thinking of giving and what gift you've actually
Speaker:given, how much you've spent.
Speaker:And a little side note with your pricing.
Speaker:Remember that should include shipping because shipping is alive cost to
Speaker:you. If indeed you have to send the product out.
Speaker:So make sure to include that in your overall budget and
Speaker:your costs.
Speaker:And then there's a nice check sheet so that you can
Speaker:see for each category in each person,
Speaker:okay, I've purchased the gift.
Speaker:It needs to have a card,
Speaker:or does it need to have a card I've sent it
Speaker:out. And so they are done that way at the very
Speaker:end, when all is said and done,
Speaker:you know,
Speaker:that you've gotten everybody covered.
Speaker:Now, the other nice thing about this type of a planner
Speaker:is next year,
Speaker:you don't have to go back and re remember who all
Speaker:the people are that you need to be gifting.
Speaker:You also can decide what's my budget too much was my
Speaker:budget, too little heaven forbid you forgot somebody this year.
Speaker:You can add them to the list right away so that
Speaker:you don't forget them for the following year.
Speaker:And all told this is such a stress reliever because let's
Speaker:face it.
Speaker:Our mind is on getting business,
Speaker:getting customers,
Speaker:filling orders,
Speaker:creating products,
Speaker:all of those things that make the holidays so stressful yet.
Speaker:Really great.
Speaker:When we look at our bank accounts in January,
Speaker:we're not necessarily looking at the business gifting side and we
Speaker:should be that's the business we're in.
Speaker:So just by tracking this,
Speaker:putting this down on paper,
Speaker:it relieves your stress,
Speaker:allows you to spend your energies on actually fulfilling those gifting
Speaker:lists instead of figuring out what to do and doing it
Speaker:haphazardly. So again,
Speaker:to summarize for your holiday gifting plan for your business,
Speaker:my suggestion is you follow my planner,
Speaker:go ahead and download it.
Speaker:Gift biz on wrap.com
Speaker:forward slash one 38.
Speaker:You're going to set yourself a budget,
Speaker:create three lists of names.
Speaker:So you have everybody written down that you're going to need
Speaker:to send a gift,
Speaker:to put a larger customer list into tiers.
Speaker:And then step number three,
Speaker:you're going to plan out the gifts with dollar allocations and
Speaker:then also what you're thinking the gifts could be.
Speaker:And then for tracking it all so that you have documentation
Speaker:going into the following year of how much you've spent,
Speaker:what you've done.
Speaker:And it's much easier to make adjustments when you do this
Speaker:same project next year,
Speaker:if you're listening to this episode,
Speaker:when it's going live,
Speaker:we are smack in the middle of the holiday season.
Speaker:So I'm sure you're already feeling the stress and the pressure
Speaker:and the tension and the excitement and the buildup for the
Speaker:holiday season.
Speaker:Consider this my gift to you so that you've got everything
Speaker:covered, both on the promotional end,
Speaker:which was the prior episode.
Speaker:And on the business gifting end,
Speaker:you can get these tasks done,
Speaker:but then also have some time for yourself to really enjoy
Speaker:and take in all that this holiday season is supposed to
Speaker:be within our industries.
Speaker:It's so easy to let this season pass us by in
Speaker:terms of the joy and the excitement and the beauty and
Speaker:the giving and the friendship and the fun of parties and
Speaker:all that the holiday supposed to be because we've got the
Speaker:business to run and the products to get out and the
Speaker:customers to serve.
Speaker:And there's so much work to do.
Speaker:So these two episodes are my little gift to you to
Speaker:hopefully make that easier.
Speaker:So you can look up from all the work that you're
Speaker:having to do and take some time and grasp the beauty
Speaker:and the warmth of the holiday too.
Speaker:And that's not all,
Speaker:I decided that since we were talking business gifting,
Speaker:I really should include friends and family gifting as well.
Speaker:So yet another download worksheet for you that you can get
Speaker:at gift biz unwrapped forward slash one 38 capital P P
Speaker:as in personal friends and family personal,
Speaker:right? And this is a worksheet similar to what I've just
Speaker:gone over with you on the business end,
Speaker:but it captures more of the needs that you have when
Speaker:you're doing personal gifts to friends and family.
Speaker:It also includes such things as don't forget something special for
Speaker:your hairdresser or the newspaper delivery person or any of the
Speaker:other types of services you have possibly it's cleaning or food
Speaker:prep and centrality budgets can so easily get out of hand.
Speaker:There's also a space for things such as hostess gifts and
Speaker:holiday cards and possibly new holiday decorations.
Speaker:So again,
Speaker:that's available to you a little different format,
Speaker:but I know you'll be able to understand it.
Speaker:And again,
Speaker:you can use this and track this then from year to
Speaker:year, I've actually used this for my family,
Speaker:this exact worksheet for probably,
Speaker:Oh, I don't know,
Speaker:10 years now.
Speaker:It's kind of fun to go back cause I can see
Speaker:what Santa has brought the kids over the course of time,
Speaker:how much I've spent on holiday gifts season over season,
Speaker:et cetera,
Speaker:for family budgeting purposes.
Speaker:It's just wonderful for a wealth of different reasons.
Speaker:Again, my gift to you,
Speaker:if you didn't catch the links,
Speaker:they will be over on the show notes page.
Speaker:So happy holiday selling happy holiday gifting.
