In this episode, I discuss how you can cut through distractions every day using a simple technique that is used by pilots and navigators all over the world.
Transcripts
Speaker:
I read an article that claimed that in the last two decades, our attention
Speaker:
span has dropped to that of a goldfish, just eight and a half seconds.
Speaker:
That's what our attention span is now.
Speaker:
Could that be why we feel so distracted and have a hard time achieving our goals?
Speaker:
In this episode, I'll share a powerful strategy to reach your goals that
Speaker:
don't require superhuman focus.
Speaker:
I'm Amin Ahmed, and welcome to be.
Speaker:
Well, do.
Speaker:
Distraction is something that we all face the invention of smartphones.
Speaker:
Definitely didn't help that out.
Speaker:
Did you note that an average user picks up their phone 1500 times
Speaker:
in a week, 1,500 times in a week?
Speaker:
That's almost unbelievable.
Speaker:
However, it's actually not that surprising as we have so much stimulation around
Speaker:
us, our smartphones being the obvious, but we also have ads on the street,
Speaker:
Amazon packages at the door, kids on summer holidays, and the list goes on.
Speaker:
It's natural to get distracted, but how much is too much, imagine
Speaker:
that you're traveling from, let's say Vancouver to Sydney, Australia.
Speaker:
By a plane, you need to follow a lighthouse or a marker.
Speaker:
The pilot will set the navigation and they'll follow pretty much a straight
Speaker:
path going from one to the other.
Speaker:
Every time there's a little bit of wind the airplane, maybe
Speaker:
veers off track a little bit.
Speaker:
The pilot will course correct.
Speaker:
And get back on track.
Speaker:
And every time you course correct, you learn a little bit about what the wind
Speaker:
speed was that took you off track, and then you adjust and you compensate.
Speaker:
Now, if you keep learning and you keep adjusting, you'll eventually get to your
Speaker:
destination with maybe a little bit of.
Speaker:
Now imagine if you didn't course correct.
Speaker:
And you got off track over and over and over again, eventually you're not
Speaker:
even headed in the right direction.
Speaker:
You're gonna end up somewhere else.
Speaker:
You might end up in who knows India or China instead of Australia.
Speaker:
So how do you fix this?
Speaker:
When ships are sailing in the sea, they often use an actual lighthouse
Speaker:
as a marker to find their final destination and to know where the coast
Speaker:
is, pilots and drivers use onboard GP.
Speaker:
For us business owners, a vision is something that acts
Speaker:
like an internal navigation.
Speaker:
Creating a vivid vision, or sometimes referred to as a perfect
Speaker:
picture in your ideal life.
Speaker:
This will help you course correct when you veer off track, we actually designed
Speaker:
a planner that can help you just do that.
Speaker:
The first thing you do each morning is you write down your ideal life statement.
Speaker:
This becomes like your lighthouse.
Speaker:
Then during the day, if you find yourself getting distracted and you're doing
Speaker:
things that weren't part of your plan or aren't going to help you get to your final
Speaker:
destination, then you mentally make a note of that and you refer back to your ideal
Speaker:
life statement and get back on track.
Speaker:
For example, if your goal is to earn an extra a hundred thousand this year,
Speaker:
and you need an extra 10 clients at $10,000, each if making connections
Speaker:
and sales calls is your strategy to get your goal and you don't make calls
Speaker:
today, you're going to miss your mark and you're not gonna make your goal.
Speaker:
There's a wonderful book about creating your vivid vision by Cameron Harold.
Speaker:
I've linked to the book in the show notes, and I definitely recommend you
Speaker:
read it because it gives you a great framework for creating your vivid.
Speaker:
And as I mentioned, our planner is also another way every single day to
Speaker:
stay on track and to make sure that you're working towards your goal.
Speaker:
If you'd like to get a digital copy of our be well, do well daily
Speaker:
planner head over to be well do well.fm/daily hyphen planner.
Speaker:
The link is also on the show notes.
Speaker:
So just as a recap, having a lighthouse vision, a vivid vision or an ideal
Speaker:
life statement is something that will help you cut through this distraction.
Speaker:
If you find yourself constantly getting distracted might be by your
Speaker:
phone or just by things around you.
Speaker:
I think having a framework, a vision and a planner is going to help you immensely.
Speaker:
I hope this was helpful tomorrow.
Speaker:
We're gonna discuss something really interesting.
Speaker:
And that is the secret to living beyond 100 years old.
