Welcome to This Daring Adventure podcast,
where we work on bridging the gap between
2
:where we are and where we want to be in
order to live a bigger and bolder life.
3
:In this podcast, we will provide
inspiration, tips, and skills
4
:you need to make your life the
adventure you want it to be.
5
:Here's your host, mindset
mentor and life coach Trista G
6
:Trista: Hey everybody.
7
:Welcome back to This Daring Advenure.
8
:It's been a few weeks.
9
:I took an unplanned break.
10
:I have been working in Lebanon for the
past several years and was transitioning
11
:out of the country and got caught
up in a bit of the war in Beirut.
12
:So I.
13
:I had to take a bit of a break
just because it became a lot,
14
:and now I am back in Canada.
15
:I am coaching full time, so I am thrilled,
absolutely thrilled to be coaching full
16
:time, and I am back at and one of the
things that I love about coaching is
17
:that you learn where your power is and
how to grab it and how to make it work
18
:so you have control over your life.
19
:and you're just not reacting to what's
going on, but you are driving it.
20
:You are living intentionally.
21
:You are living by design, not
default and making decisions.
22
:And many of you, and I know I've been
there, get stuck in indecision, where
23
:you're constantly second guessing
yourself and getting lost in confusion.
24
:And today I want to talk a
little bit about breaking
25
:free of that and how to do it.
26
:I'll also cover why it's so important,
and I'll give you a couple of examples to
27
:make these ideas really, come alive and
help you to apply it in your own life.
28
:So why is decision making so powerful?
29
:Making decisions is one of
our privileges of being human.
30
:Unlike animals, we can
look into the future.
31
:We can plan for it.
32
:We can make choices ahead of time.
33
:We can decide how we will act today,
tomorrow, Next month and next year.
34
:And when we make a decision and honor
it, we're tapping into the highest part
35
:of our brain, the prefrontal cortex.
36
:But how often do we avoid doing this?
37
:I know for myself, I have put off
many decisions about relationships,
38
:about money, about work.
39
:And we indulge in confusion
saying, I don't know.
40
:I don't know what to do.
41
:I don't know what I want.
42
:And we allow ourselves
to sit in indecision.
43
:We think that it's necessary when in
fact it's a choice and it holds us back.
44
:It keeps us playing small.
45
:It keeps us stuck.
46
:And we basically just indulge in
indecision, inaction, and confusion.
47
:Now, I have had a client who was looking
at whether to stay in her current job.
48
:Or transitioned into something that she's
always wanted to do and something that
49
:was more meaningful for her, something
that gave her more energy, but the
50
:thought of leaving behind stability
and the comfort is scary and she was
51
:waffling back and forth, not knowing
if it was the right move for her.
52
:And that thought alone, that
you don't know if it's the right
53
:move, kept her stuck for years.
54
:But here's the truth.
55
:There is no wrong decision.
56
:My client can choose whether to stay
in the job Or to go, but what matters
57
:the most is that she has her own back.
58
:She makes a decision.
59
:She likes her reasons.
60
:And then she commits to following through.
61
:If we allow ourselves to indulge in
confusion, thinking that there is a right
62
:answer, or there's a wrong answer, we
might fail that we might make a mistake.
63
:We are only postponing our own growth.
64
:And it keeps us in limbo.
65
:People talk a lot about making the wrong
decision, especially when it comes to
66
:big life decisions like relationships,
career changes, where to live.
67
:You might hear people say, my first
marriage was a mistake, or taking
68
:that job was the wrong decision.
69
:I really want to challenge that.
70
:What if there are no wrong decisions?
71
:What if every choice you've made has
brought you to where you are today?
72
:It happened for you.
73
:It's a part of your path.
74
:And the only thing that makes a decision
wrong is if you decide that it was wrong.
75
:Think about that.
76
:If you could shift your mindset and
believe that every decision is the
77
:right one because it led you to learn
and grow, how much more confidently
78
:would you approach your choices?
79
:How would you show up differently?
80
:I had a client who was in her 50s
and reflecting on her career she
81
:pursued for decades and she was
thinking it might have been a waste.
82
:She shouldn't have done it.
83
:She should have left a long time ago.
84
:She should have chosen something else.
85
:But I encouraged her, instead of dwelling
on whether it was the right or wrong path,
86
:to honor it as a part of her journey.
87
:It happened exactly as it
should have because it did.
88
:And now she's free to make a
new decision with confidence and
89
:knowing that whatever she chooses
next, she will back herself up.
90
:She's not beating herself up
for the decisions that she made
91
:or the actions that she took.
92
:She made that decision decades ago
based on the information that she
93
:had, based on who she was at the time.
94
:And if you can look back at
that now and say, you know what?
95
:I made the best decision that I could.
96
:It made sense at the time.
97
:I had my reasons.
98
:I liked my reasons.
99
:And you do the same thing
for yourself in the future.
100
:And you know that you don't allow yourself
to judge yourself and beat yourself up.
101
:then you will be much more confident
in making those decisions and
102
:those choices in the future.
103
:Now, let me give you four key reasons
why you should start making decisions
104
:and being more decisive starting today.
105
:The first reason is that it saves time.
106
:When you stay in, I don't know
mode, you waste valuable time.
107
:How many times have you put off
decisions spending weeks, months, Or
108
:even years agonizing over what to do?
109
:Think about decisions like
whether to have children, change
110
:jobs, or end a relationship.
111
:The longer you indulge in
indecision, the more time you burn.
112
:In reality, not making a
decision is a decision in itself.
113
:Let me repeat that.
114
:Not making a decision
is a decision in itself.
115
:But when you decide quickly and
intentionally you move forward, you free
116
:up all of that energy, all that emotional
and mental energy and give yourself space
117
:to focus on what you want to come next.
118
:Second, it increases action.
119
:Once you make a decision, you can
start taking action right away.
120
:If you're stuck in indecision, whether
it's starting over in a business or
121
:ending a relationship, You're not moving
forward, but once you decide, you can
122
:begin to take steps towards that goal.
123
:And that action creates momentum.
124
:For example, I had a client who
finally decided to leave a toxic job.
125
:She wasn't happy.
126
:It was sucking up her energy and
she decided to pursue her passion of
127
:becoming a yoga instructor instead
and building her own business.
128
:Instead of.
129
:indulging in more self doubt.
130
:Once she made that decision, things
started to change quickly for her
131
:and she started to feel a lot better.
132
:She had a lot more energy.
133
:The third reason making
decisions is important is
134
:because it accelerates growth.
135
:Growth will come from
experience and learning, and
136
:that comes from taking action.
137
:When you decide you will expand
your life, You're opening
138
:yourself up to the possibilities.
139
:You're opening yourself up to the
opportunities on the flip side,
140
:confusion will keep you small.
141
:For instance, if you are thinking about
returning to school for a new degree, you
142
:might get stuck in what if I fail, but
if you make the decision to go for it.
143
:Even when there's fear, because fear
doesn't mean stop, you start to grow
144
:because you're in new territory.
145
:You're having new experiences.
146
:You always benefit when you
learn and when you grow.
147
:The fourth reason is that
it builds confidence.
148
:Making decisions and following
through on them builds confidence.
149
:Think about how you feel when
you're stuck in confusion.
150
:You're doubting, you're second
guessing yourself, you're feeling
151
:insecure, but compare that to
how you feel when you decide.
152
:When you make a decision and you have
your own back, your confidence soars
153
:because you are believing in yourself.
154
:You're proving to yourself that
you trust your own judgment.
155
:You're listening to what it is you
truly want and you're following and
156
:going after what gives you energy.
157
:Confidence doesn't come
from avoiding decisions.
158
:It comes from making them.
159
:Even when you're not sure of the outcome.
160
:Even if you're not sure whether,
how things will work out.
161
:But you trust in yourself.
162
:You know you can handle it.
163
:You allow and process your emotions.
164
:And you keep going no matter what.
165
:So how do you make
decisions with confidence?
166
:How do you make a decision
when you're feeling stuck?
167
:Here are my guidelines.
168
:First, you need to consider all
your options without bias, ask
169
:yourself, if you were starting fresh,
would I choose this option again?
170
:Redecide.
171
:This is especially powerful when
deciding about something like
172
:staying in a relationship or a job.
173
:Would you marry this person again today?
174
:Would you take this job again?
175
:This helps you to break free from
the trap of sticking with something
176
:just because you've always done it.
177
:Consciously re deciding, re committing
or letting it go and choosing
178
:something else is where your power is.
179
:And it's okay if you wouldn't decide
again, if you wouldn't choose it again.
180
:There is power in that, and it
doesn't make you wrong for making
181
:that decision in the first place.
182
:It just means you've changed, you've
grown, your priorities are different,
183
:you want something different.
184
:You really don't need to explain
your reasons as long as you
185
:know them and you like them.
186
:But don't make yourself wrong
for the original decision, the
187
:original choice, if you're deciding
on something else in the future.
188
:Imagine that both
decisions turn out amazing.
189
:If you're trying to decide between
two options, imagine that both
190
:outcomes are equally successful.
191
:So for instance, if a woman is deciding
whether to stay in her marriage Or leave.
192
:What if both options
lead to an amazing life?
193
:Stay in that relationship
and it can be great.
194
:Or leave it and you can
have a great life too.
195
:Either way, you know it works out.
196
:So then what do you want?
197
:Oftentimes, we choose the option
that we feel is the safest.
198
:That we feel has a greater
chance of working out.
199
:But in reality, they both
have a chance of working out.
200
:Both can be great.
201
:Challenge your brain to
focus on how that could be.
202
:Don't let your brain go down the path
of doom and gloom and all the problems
203
:and everything that can go wrong.
204
:Which would you choose
if both would be great?
205
:This can remove the fear of failure and
allow you to focus on what you truly want.
206
:Now remember, there is no failure.
207
:There's only learning and if failure
weren't a big deal, what would you choose?
208
:When you take failure out of the
equation, you realize that every
209
:decision is a chance to learn and grow.
210
:It's not a big deal.
211
:How would you show up differently if
failure wasn't such a bad, horrible thing?
212
:You had your own back.
213
:You didn't beat yourself up.
214
:You didn't worry about
what other people thought.
215
:Next, you can ask your future self.
216
:Picture yourself 10 years from now and ask
her what decision she, you should make.
217
:Your future self is wiser and
more experienced, and you can
218
:tap into that and find out what
would she tell you to do today.
219
:If you imagine that, let's say right
now you're in your mid forties, deciding
220
:whether to start a new business or not,
you can consult your 55 year old self.
221
:What would she say to you?
222
:Would she encourage you to take the leap?
223
:Would she tell you that this
can work, that you can do this?
224
:That it's a success.
225
:Can you listen to her?
226
:Can you tap into that?
227
:It's very powerful.
228
:It's very helpful.
229
:Decisions are made in an instant.
230
:You don't need weeks or months to decide.
231
:And remember, when making a decision
and having your own back on that
232
:decision is the key to living with
confidence and moving forward in life.
233
:You don't have to do things
perfectly, You can think that
234
:both options can be amazing.
235
:Both options can turn out great.
236
:Know your reasons for what
you're choosing and like them.
237
:You don't have to explain them to anybody.
238
:Have your own back.
239
:Don't beat yourself up.
240
:Don't judge yourself.
241
:Make the best decision that you can
today, knowing that this will free
242
:you up, that this will give you power.
243
:This will give you energy and it
will free up space to start taking
244
:action and move yourself forward.
245
:I encourage you to make whatever
decision it is that you've been putting
246
:off, whether it's about your career,
relationships, or personal growth, decide,
247
:act, And watch your life transform.
