Speaker:

Let's talk about subscription boxes.

2

:

These can be a great addition to your

crochet business as they give you a form

3

:

of recurring income without too much

risk when it comes to the money side,

4

:

which I'm betting you weren't expecting.

5

:

So let's talk all about

subscription boxes and how they can

6

:

compliment your crochet business.

7

:

So subscription boxes are kind of a

crossover with a membership except

8

:

there's a physical product involved.

9

:

So you will ship boxes, container,

whatever products you promised

10

:

every month or every two months,

whatever time scale that you want to.

11

:

People who have subscribed.

12

:

There are all kinds of subscription

boxes that you can use for crochet.

13

:

You can have crochet themed, so it doesn't

have to be a pattern or yarn or hooks.

14

:

It can just be a crochet theme,

like crochet themed, stationary

15

:

socks, uh, hats, pencil cases, uh,

notebooks, all those type of things.

16

:

So this can also lean into creating

your own merchandise line as

17

:

well, you can have whatever you

want that's related to crochet.

18

:

A lot of crochet subscription boxes

do contain yarn and, uh, um, a monthly

19

:

pattern to go along with, but how

you do that is entirely up to you.

20

:

You could have crochet themed jewelry,

all sorts, as long as it's got a

21

:

crochet theme, you're all good.

22

:

And as long as you deliver

what you promise to your

23

:

subscribers, again, all great.

24

:

But what about the cost?

25

:

And this is one of the things that puts

a lot of people off subscription boxes.

26

:

The idea that you're going to spend

an absolute fortune without knowing if

27

:

people will actually buy your boxes.

28

:

But this is the beauty

about subscription boxes.

29

:

You don't buy anything until

people have subscribed.

30

:

Now, does that mean there's a delay

between people ordering and you sending?

31

:

Yes, absolutely.

32

:

Of course there is.

33

:

But that's part of the promise.

34

:

When people sign up, they know this.

35

:

They know what date the

next box is going out.

36

:

They know what date they'll

receive their first box.

37

:

Now, there are ways around this,

and that could be the first box when

38

:

anyone subscribes, is one that's

always the same no matter what.

39

:

Which means that although you'll keep

some stock in house for those first boxes.

40

:

It is the first box anyone will receive

so they can receive it quite quickly.

41

:

And then after that, they will join the

regular box that changes every month.

42

:

But if you don't buy anything until

people are subscribed, it means

43

:

you're not wasting your money.

44

:

You are not overbuying stock,

you are not buying more than you

45

:

can ship out, and it gives you

that security and the reassurance

46

:

that you are not going to waste.

47

:

You're hard earned cash on

something that's just gonna

48

:

sit on a shelf in your house.

49

:

Now, subscription boxes do come with

that cost, but if as long as you

50

:

know what these are going to cost

and what people are paid, you can

51

:

make sure that you've got the right

products to set out every month.

52

:

It does mean you're gonna have

to do your research though.

53

:

'cause you need to know exactly

what you need to charge and

54

:

you need to keep the price.

55

:

The same subscription boxes work

by charging a regular monthly fee.

56

:

And that fee has to be the same month

to month, which means you need to

57

:

know what things are gonna cost, how

much stuff you've gotta put in the

58

:

box every month, and how much profit

you're going to make from that.

59

:

So when you're researching what you

can put in your subscription boxes.

60

:

You need to have an idea of what

you're gonna put in these boxes for

61

:

several months in advance so that

you can work out all the pricing.

62

:

Because what you can't do is

raise the price month to month

63

:

because you made a mistake.

64

:

You've got to sit down and get

the numbers right, or you are at

65

:

risk of losing a lot of money,

which we absolutely want to avoid.

66

:

So.

67

:

If you wanna do subscription

boxes, you absolutely have to sit

68

:

down and work the numbers out.

69

:

You can't, not, there's too much

at risk, there's too much to lose

70

:

if you get your numbers wrong.

71

:

So once you know what kind of um, crochet

theme box you're gonna be sending out

72

:

every month, work out where you're

gonna buy from, what everything's

73

:

gonna cost, how much is going into

that box, how, how many products.

74

:

And then work out the cost.

75

:

Work out how much profit you want to make

because there's no point in doing all

76

:

this work if you're only going to make

a dollar or two profit from every box.

77

:

You need more than that to

make it worth it for you.

78

:

So getting the finances right is the

most important thing about these boxes.

79

:

Subscription boxes have been incredibly

popular over the last few years.

80

:

Because everyone likes a nice treat,

and this is a great way to get one.

81

:

They know how much it'll cost every month.

82

:

It's gonna come out regularly, and

it contains some goodies that are

83

:

related to crochet, which is a great

way for crochet to treat herself.

84

:

But what if you're not doing

subscription boxes for crocheters?

85

:

What if it's for something else?

86

:

Well, if you sell what you make, you can.

87

:

Do a subscription box for anything.

88

:

You can do subscription boxes for, um,

baby themed items, and not everything

89

:

in the box needs to be crocheted by you.

90

:

It can be something else.

91

:

It could be one crocheted item from

you plus some other themed items

92

:

that relate to what you've made.

93

:

So you get to combine what you make

and the your niche and other products.

94

:

It also gives you the opportunity

to team up with other small

95

:

businesses and buy stock from them.

96

:

It gives you the opportunity

to just kind of relax a little.

97

:

You get the money that you need for that

product that you've made, and you can buy

98

:

some of the bits in good quality bits.

99

:

We've gotta make it worth it to go

into that box around that theme,

100

:

and it adds some easy profit

where you don't have to crochet.

101

:

And that's kind of the

source of recurring income.

102

:

It's having a monthly fee coming

in, and you don't have to do all

103

:

the work yourself, as in, you

don't have to crochet everything.

104

:

You can buy some products online, put them

into that box along with something that

105

:

you've crocheted, but it's not as much

work as if you're doing it all yourself.

106

:

That's what subscription

boxes can give you.

107

:

So there are all kinds of ways that

you can make subscription boxes

108

:

work for your crochet business.

109

:

It doesn't have to be for other

crocheters, it can be for people in

110

:

your niche, but it's got to be within

your niche because if it's not,

111

:

it's gonna work out a bit strange.

112

:

No one knows what to expect, so

you've gotta stick with a theme.

113

:

You've gotta stick with

the niche of your business.

114

:

But.

115

:

It gives you security of what's money

you've got coming in every month By

116

:

building the this membership, this

subscription membership, you are going

117

:

to take the pressure off yourself.

118

:

You are going to know some of the

sales you're gonna get this month.

119

:

You're gonna have that money in

advance so that you can create your

120

:

boxes and get them shipped out.

121

:

It's financial security.

122

:

Yes, people come and go from

subscriptions, but as long as you are

123

:

marketing it, promoting it, and as

long as the directory is that people

124

:

are joining and you know more people

are joining than are leaving, then the

125

:

subscription model can work very well.

126

:

Now there is a lot of work behind these,

you know, you are going to be making

127

:

and packing them up all yourself and

getting them shipped out every month.

128

:

But to have that financial

security around that.

129

:

It can really take that pressure

off, take that financial pressure

130

:

off, and give you that peace of mind

of knowing you've got a relatively

131

:

stable income coming in every month.

132

:

And as long as you deliver those boxes

and what you say and make them good value

133

:

for money, then people will stay because

they love getting the treats every month.

134

:

They love, um, getting something for them.

135

:

That's it's good value for money and

you know, everyone loves these things.

136

:

It's a mystery because they dunno

what they're gonna get and it plays

137

:

into that fear of missing out.

138

:

If they cancel, they could miss

out on something really good

139

:

that's gonna come next month.

140

:

And so people do tend to

stay for several boxes of the

141

:

subscriptions to not miss out.

142

:

And.

143

:

You can show once everything's

gone out, you can show off what the

144

:

contents are on your social media in

newsletters to keep promoting it and

145

:

for people to realize that actually,

yeah, this is a good idea to sign up.

146

:

So, you know, there is a lot

of effort involved, but also

147

:

security around your finances.

148

:

When you start building that membership

up, you do have to put a lot of work

149

:

into promoting them and showing off

the value for, for the money that that.

150

:

They are paying.

151

:

Um, and as long as you deliver what you

say and everything's good quality and they

152

:

get great value, then everyone's happy.

153

:

Subscription boxes, they have been

incredibly popular because of this

154

:

idea of treating themselves, of

getting, something they don't know.

155

:

It's a surprise.

156

:

And who doesn't love a surprise

present arriving in the post?

157

:

So subscription boxes is a lot

of effort, but you don't have

158

:

to pay a ton of money up front.

159

:

You only buy the contents, the extra

contents that you don't crochet yourself,

160

:

you only buy them once people have

paid, and that stops you from having

161

:

to shell out a fortune up front,

but can be very, very successful.
