00:00:34
In today's episode, we are delighted to welcome on Amy, worked
2
:
00:00:40
with earlier on last year and she's
come on to tell you all her story.
3
:
00:00:46
So, welcome Amy.
4
:
00:00:47
amy: Hi,
5
:
00:00:48
kev: Welcome, Amy.
6
:
00:00:49
Nice to see you again.
7
:
00:00:51
amy: nice to see you too.
8
:
00:00:52
Thanks for having me.
9
:
00:00:53
kev: So I suppose I better start really,
Amy, tell me a little bit about your story
10
:
00:00:58
before you, you got in touch with us,
what was happening, that sort of thing.
11
:
00:01:02
Really
12
:
00:01:03
amy: Yeah, so, well, in terms of the
driving, I essentially have lived in
13
:
00:01:09
London for quite a long time, say like,
gosh, 12 years, so just haven't really
14
:
00:01:15
needed to drive that much, and my partner
does drive, and we were getting a car,
15
:
00:01:22
and it was just like, we'd gotten to
that point where I was having to think
16
:
00:01:26
about, I gonna drive in again after
passing when I was like 17, which I
17
:
00:01:31
think happens to quite a lot of people.
18
:
00:01:33
They like pass straight after school
and then we go to uni and then we
19
:
00:01:36
move to a city And then, yeah, just
don't drive for a very long time.
20
:
00:01:40
, so, yeah, it's sort of just.
21
:
00:01:42
It came around as something I had
to do, um, even though I've been
22
:
00:01:45
putting it off, for years, because
it's just something that it's not
23
:
00:01:49
really been that important to me.
24
:
00:01:51
It's more been like something
other people have wanted me to do.
25
:
00:01:54
so yeah, so I was just like, I'm, if
I'm going to do this properly, I'm
26
:
00:01:58
going to have to have some kind of
like kickstart, which is why I got in
27
:
00:02:02
touch with you guys, because I just.
28
:
00:02:04
or like, I can't do this on my own.
29
:
00:02:06
And I just needed like
a little bit of support.
30
:
00:02:09
so yeah, to get me back on the road.
31
:
00:02:12
kev: brilliant.
32
:
00:02:12
And we, and we'd done
some training, didn't we?
33
:
00:02:15
We We had a, like a, a get it
done in a day, training day.
34
:
00:02:19
amy: Yeah.
35
:
00:02:19
kev: did you find that?
36
:
00:02:20
amy: Yeah, no, it was great.
37
:
00:02:22
I, um, I think beforehand I was really,
really nervous about it actually.
38
:
00:02:25
Cause I think personally,
when I've got to do something.
39
:
00:02:29
That I'm sort of like a bit nervous about
if it's like half an hour, an hour, like
40
:
00:02:34
a presentation or something, you know, you
get it over with and you could be like,
41
:
00:02:37
it's only an hour, but it was a full day.
42
:
00:02:39
So even that was like, quite daunting.
43
:
00:02:42
Um, especially obviously never
like really meeting in person and.
44
:
00:02:47
But obviously we had our like chat
beforehand and that just like sort of
45
:
00:02:51
really helped because we met and then
obviously we met on the day um so yeah it
46
:
00:02:57
didn't feel like awkward and yeah the day
actually went really quickly if I remember
47
:
00:03:00
rightly and we just drove around my local
town for about five hours or so didn't we.
48
:
00:03:07
Um, so yeah, no, it was brilliant,
um, and it really helped
49
:
00:03:12
because I'm still driving today.
50
:
00:03:14
And yeah, so it did definitely do the job.
51
:
00:03:18
kev: So how much had
you been driving before?
52
:
00:03:21
How long since you'd driven?
53
:
00:03:23
No,
54
:
00:03:26
amy: COVID, I went and did some
traditional refresher driving lessons.
55
:
00:03:34
I did like four or five, but I just
didn't get on with it because it just,
56
:
00:03:38
if maybe it was the person who I was
with, but was very much trying to teach
57
:
00:03:42
me how to drive again, rather than giving
me confidence in what I already knew.
58
:
00:03:47
So it didn't really work out.
59
:
00:03:48
So I stopped that and I was just driving
our, so we had quite an old car then.
60
:
00:03:53
and then we got into a minor
accident and the car got written off.
61
:
00:03:57
So we didn't have a car for a few
years, which is why I stopped.
62
:
00:04:01
And then, like I said, we decided
to invest in a like a proper nice
63
:
00:04:05
car automatic, which is also key.
64
:
00:04:08
Cause I learned in a manual and I
think automatic is so much easier.
65
:
00:04:12
And I think that's definitely helped
with some of my sort of issues.
66
:
00:04:17
kev: And when you think back,
can you remember what your
67
:
00:04:22
worries were about driving?
68
:
00:04:24
Because you mentioned that it wasn't
really about the driving skills.
69
:
00:04:27
You didn't really need
to learn how to drive.
70
:
00:04:30
It was more about your confidence.
71
:
00:04:33
So can you remember
What were your worries?
72
:
00:04:36
What were your concerns about
driving before, before you found us?
73
:
00:04:42
amy: Yeah, I think it was partly.
74
:
00:04:45
Remembering how to drive in terms
of like, like things like going
75
:
00:04:49
on certain lanes and roundabouts,
like all that I would remember.
76
:
00:04:51
But for me, it was more like
trusting myself, to remember
77
:
00:04:56
how I, you know, how to drive.
78
:
00:04:58
so there is aspects of the actual
driving, , that I wanted to improve on.
79
:
00:05:03
But yeah, it was more just
like, Even not knowing, not
80
:
00:05:06
feeling comfortable in the car.
81
:
00:05:09
Yeah, and just not trusting myself
or other people on the road.
82
:
00:05:12
And then the other thing was like the
nerves before getting into the car.
83
:
00:05:16
That was like something I wanted
to try and tackle as well.
84
:
00:05:20
So yeah, I think they were
the main things really.
85
:
00:05:23
And like just going, playing out
scenarios in my head that I thought
86
:
00:05:26
would happen before getting in
the car, um, that never happened.
87
:
00:05:30
And then actually things do
happen and you handle them anyway.
88
:
00:05:33
So.
89
:
00:05:35
Yeah, it wasn't like specific things.
90
:
00:05:36
It was more like an overarching fear.
91
:
00:05:40
And yeah, I just, I don't really love
being in the car as a passenger either.
92
:
00:05:44
So it's all like interconnected.
93
:
00:05:46
and so, yeah, I was just like, no, I
need to do something about this and
94
:
00:05:49
just sort of like rip the plaster off.
95
:
00:05:52
kev: I love that, the rip in the
plaster off, it was like, okay, that's,
96
:
00:05:55
that's, that's done, let's get rid
of that and let's, let's try this.
97
:
00:05:59
amy: Yeah.
98
:
00:06:00
kev: sort of things did we,
because I remember it very
99
:
00:06:02
well, it was a nice sunny day.
100
:
00:06:04
amy: Well, um,
101
:
00:06:06
kev: of things, it was hot as well,
what sort of things did we do then that
102
:
00:06:11
made it comfortable for you on the day?
103
:
00:06:14
amy: well we drove around.
104
:
00:06:19
Basically where I live, it's kind
of like a town, it's quite busy,
105
:
00:06:22
big red buses, all of that stuff.
106
:
00:06:24
So I just wanted to get comfortable
with my local area because that was my
107
:
00:06:28
goal really, to be able to go to the
shops on my own and pick up, like, my
108
:
00:06:33
husband from the station and whatnot.
109
:
00:06:35
So we just drove around
at our own sort of pace.
110
:
00:06:40
Go in different , directions.
111
:
00:06:42
And then I think we went to the town
over and I went on some faster roads.
112
:
00:06:46
and then, yeah, we pulled into
a few car parks, I think, and
113
:
00:06:49
had breaks and stuff, didn't we?
114
:
00:06:50
So yeah, it just felt like the repetition.
115
:
00:06:54
was really good because it felt like
I was just getting more and more
116
:
00:06:57
confident on the roads, getting used
to people being behind me, because
117
:
00:07:01
that's always going to be a thing
around here, like it's always very busy.
118
:
00:07:04
Um, so it was just getting
used to being on the roads.
119
:
00:07:08
And then, yeah, I think the one thing I
remember Was I'd not been in the car on
120
:
00:07:13
my own so I'd only ever been in the car
with my partner and that was like quite a
121
:
00:07:20
Like import like I felt like without him.
122
:
00:07:23
I wouldn't be able to do it and so I'm
just looking back at my notes before
123
:
00:07:28
this and I remember going down to
the car and sitting in it and driving
124
:
00:07:33
outside of our building and doing like
a quick U turn in this car park next
125
:
00:07:38
door just because I hadn't been actually
physically in the car or driven it
126
:
00:07:43
without him in there before our sort
of like session at the weekend, so I
127
:
00:07:47
was just like, I need to do that first.
128
:
00:07:50
And so even that was massive and now
it's like almost the other way where
129
:
00:07:53
I prefer it when he's not in the car.
130
:
00:07:55
Um,
131
:
00:07:57
Which is funny, because I, at one
point, thought I would never be able to,
132
:
00:08:00
like, drive on my own and I needed his
reassurance, I was doing everything okay,
133
:
00:08:05
and what should I do, oh, you know, if
something was to happen, and actually,
134
:
00:08:09
when I'm on my own, you just crack on,
like, you almost don't have That person
135
:
00:08:14
to like second guess you or whatever.
136
:
00:08:16
So, so yeah, so I think when we
were doing our driving, it was
137
:
00:08:20
just like mostly getting used to
this sort of area that I live in.
138
:
00:08:24
And yeah, taking lots of
breaks when we needed them.
139
:
00:08:27
and yeah, it was, it was very like.
140
:
00:08:30
Chilled, wasn't it?
141
:
00:08:31
I remember like just, just, you were very
like, um, I don't know, relaxing and,
142
:
00:08:37
and just sort of like going at our own
pace compared to my refresher classes
143
:
00:08:42
where I was just like almost forced
to do stuff I didn't feel ready to do.
144
:
00:08:47
And that like made it worse.
145
:
00:08:49
So actually it was, it was a good pace.
146
:
00:08:52
kev: yeah, and I do remember
that that was your goal.
147
:
00:08:55
It wasn't a sort of like huge, I want
to drive to the seaside type goal.
148
:
00:09:00
It really was.
149
:
00:09:02
I want to be able to drive in
my local area on my own and
150
:
00:09:08
trust in your own decisions.
151
:
00:09:10
So knowing that you could
do it and then to drive.
152
:
00:09:14
build on from there.
153
:
00:09:16
So, and I think it's great, isn't it?
154
:
00:09:19
Because everybody's goals are different.
155
:
00:09:22
They're unique to you.
156
:
00:09:24
And it's made a really big
difference for you, hasn't it?
157
:
00:09:28
amy: Yeah, absolutely.
158
:
00:09:29
even like you say, I'm not
driving super, super far, but
159
:
00:09:34
it's almost like baby steps.
160
:
00:09:36
And I had to start from scratch
really and build my way up.
161
:
00:09:40
And yeah, I wouldn't say I'm like, Gonna
be driving long distances anytime soon.
162
:
00:09:46
But that, but I think that's fine.
163
:
00:09:48
I think everyone's each their own.
164
:
00:09:50
Like some people need that
'cause they wanna be driving
165
:
00:09:53
up to see family or whatever.
166
:
00:09:54
But if it's just that you just want
to get A to B comfortably, or if
167
:
00:10:00
it's like I'm picking my partner up
all the time, you know, it's raining
168
:
00:10:04
and I'm like, do you wanna lift?
169
:
00:10:05
He's like, yeah.
170
:
00:10:06
Like it's just those small
things and he loves it obviously.
171
:
00:10:09
kev: Yeah, it
172
:
00:10:12
amy: Yeah, but equally, like, I was
just going to give this as an example,
173
:
00:10:16
because recently we had, my partner
was having a procedure, like, under
174
:
00:10:21
general anaesthetics, so you know
you have to take someone with you.
175
:
00:10:25
And like this time last year, I'd
have gone with him, but we would
176
:
00:10:28
have got taxis both ways, even though
we're paying whatever for our car.
177
:
00:10:32
but this time I was
like, no, no, I'll drive.
178
:
00:10:34
And we'd not done, I'd not
done this route before.
179
:
00:10:37
It was only like 20, 25 minutes away.
180
:
00:10:40
Um, but even that, like being able to
just go somewhere new and, and be helpful.
181
:
00:10:46
yeah.
182
:
00:10:46
So yes, taking goals all the time.
183
:
00:10:51
kev: is.
184
:
00:10:51
It's fantastic, isn't it?
185
:
00:10:53
This is, It does make a difference.
186
:
00:10:55
It gives you that freedom.
187
:
00:10:56
It gives you that confidence as well.
188
:
00:10:59
And like you say, you're, you're doing
the things that you want to be able to do.
189
:
00:11:03
You know, supporting your partner
and helping out in that way.
190
:
00:11:07
It's brilliant.
191
:
00:11:09
amy: Thanks.
192
:
00:11:11
kev: And I, you know, afterwards,
I know you was, you, there was a
193
:
00:11:15
meeting that you had to attend.
194
:
00:11:17
And I just remember getting the
email back and saying, you'll
195
:
00:11:20
never guess what I've done.
196
:
00:11:21
I've just driven there.
197
:
00:11:23
And it was just like, wow, because
that was that's quite a journey that
198
:
00:11:28
one one or two roads, but there were
country roads as well, weren't they?
199
:
00:11:32
So they're not sort of like in
the town where we had practiced.
200
:
00:11:35
It would been in the country.
201
:
00:11:37
So
202
:
00:11:38
amy: Yeah, yeah, exactly.
203
:
00:11:39
New roads.
204
:
00:11:40
And I think, and that also
is like, it's following the
205
:
00:11:43
satnav as well and listening.
206
:
00:11:44
So even that's a skill on, you know, in
any way, where back in the day when I
207
:
00:11:48
passed, there was no, like, you weren't
following satnavs on your phone and stuff.
208
:
00:11:52
So, yeah.
209
:
00:11:54
kev: I just love it.
210
:
00:11:56
It's a shame that we don't video these,
because the smile on your face when
211
:
00:12:00
you're telling these stories is like,
yes, I did this and I'm doing this and,
212
:
00:12:05
and you know what, I actually enjoy
it when my partner's not in the car.
213
:
00:12:08
It's the big smile on your face there was
just like, okay, that's some achievement
214
:
00:12:13
really from not driving and probably
scared to get in the car as well.
215
:
00:12:18
So, you know, that's, it's,
it's massive, isn't it?
216
:
00:12:21
And the life changing.
217
:
00:12:22
Yeah.
218
:
00:12:23
So,
219
:
00:12:24
amy: yeah, definitely.
220
:
00:12:26
I think it's, it's hard when
obviously some people are driving,
221
:
00:12:29
my sister drives the work, she
drives like, yeah, yeah, yeah.
222
:
00:12:33
You know, eight hours a day,
sometimes there and back for meetings.
223
:
00:12:36
And that just blows my mind where I'm
like happy that I just drive down the road
224
:
00:12:41
or something, but it's just remembering
where you were and how far you've come.
225
:
00:12:45
And then like, cause you know,
I think we said at the end.
226
:
00:12:49
Like if I was to ever want to do motorways
or whatever, or like we move further
227
:
00:12:54
away out of London, like I could just
do another day, do you know what I mean?
228
:
00:12:58
And like do it in sections
rather than like trying to
229
:
00:13:01
achieve everything straight away.
230
:
00:13:02
I just, I just, I think you
just have to be a bit realistic.
231
:
00:13:07
kev: yeah, and everyone's different as
well, so everyone's gonna go at their
232
:
00:13:10
own pace, whatever pace that may be.
233
:
00:13:13
And I just, you know, I think that's a
great, for people that are listening,
234
:
00:13:17
to be able to say, that just go at
your pace, do it at your, there's no
235
:
00:13:21
time frame to this either, is there?
236
:
00:13:24
You know, you can just do it how
you feel, which I think is great.
237
:
00:13:27
Yeah, and we talk all the time,
don't we, about bite sizing things.
238
:
00:13:33
And it is that the option, you know
that you've always got the option to,
239
:
00:13:38
let you say, if life changes and you
need to change your driving habits,
240
:
00:13:45
then that's when you tackle it.
241
:
00:13:47
There's options to tackle
it when and if you need to, so.
242
:
00:13:53
amy: Yeah.
243
:
00:13:54
, kev: what advice would you give
someone that's in the position
244
:
00:13:59
that your old self was in?
245
:
00:14:00
What would you, what advice
would you give to them?
246
:
00:14:03
Of
247
:
00:14:05
amy: Hmm.
248
:
00:14:06
Um, firstly, I would say if it depends,
if you're like, it depends if you've
249
:
00:14:12
got a car and whatnot, but I would.
250
:
00:14:14
I was even talking to a colleague about
it today and he was saying I'm the same,
251
:
00:14:19
like he never passed his test, but he was
like, I'm just way too anxious for it.
252
:
00:14:22
And I was like, the first thing
you need to do is go automatic.
253
:
00:14:29
I know it's like a debate and
everyone has their opinions, but
254
:
00:14:34
if you are a nervous driver, I do
think it eliminates a lot of stress.
255
:
00:14:38
Um, so I would say look into that
if you've not thought about that.
256
:
00:14:43
Um, And then, yeah, I don't know, I
guess just doing a bit of research,
257
:
00:14:48
really, um, and reaching out to you guys.
258
:
00:14:54
kev: of course.
259
:
00:14:56
amy: Different things, don't you, as well?
260
:
00:14:57
You don't just do what I did,
and I think everyone's different.
261
:
00:15:00
Like I say, I just wanted to,
like, almost do it all in one day,
262
:
00:15:04
whereas some people might want to
do, like, little bits and stuff.
263
:
00:15:07
So I think, yeah, just figuring
out how you best learn and
264
:
00:15:11
then, like, going, going after.
265
:
00:15:13
What would work for you?
266
:
00:15:15
It's probably what I would say to myself.
267
:
00:15:18
Yeah,
268
:
00:15:20
kev: And it's that Knowing that
the way you feel can change, you
269
:
00:15:26
can change those feelings, you
can change those thoughts and you
270
:
00:15:30
can , learn to manage them as well.
271
:
00:15:33
So it doesn't, it doesn't mean
that how you, how somebody
272
:
00:15:36
feels right at the moment, they
don't have to feel stuck there.
273
:
00:15:40
It is possible to, to make those changes.
274
:
00:15:45
amy: absolutely.
275
:
00:15:46
I think it's hard to feel like that
sometimes and you do feel like, Oh,
276
:
00:15:51
I'm going to feel like this forever.
277
:
00:15:52
And like, even still, I'm like, Ooh,
I feel a bit nervous about doing that.
278
:
00:15:55
Or, but then, you know, I remember
you saying that that's okay to
279
:
00:15:59
be nervous and do it anyway.
280
:
00:16:01
And actually anxious drivers
make great drivers because
281
:
00:16:04
we're more cautious sometimes.
282
:
00:16:05
So it's just, yeah.
283
:
00:16:08
I think.
284
:
00:16:09
It is great to look back and be like, Oh,
you know, actually feelings do change.
285
:
00:16:14
Um, but also I'd say to that, like
making these notes is really key
286
:
00:16:19
because actually it's so funny to
read back what I wrote to myself.
287
:
00:16:24
Just the fact of even getting in the car
on my own and going around the corner.
288
:
00:16:28
Like, that's wild to me that
that was so nerve wracking
289
:
00:16:31
and now, like, it's nothing.
290
:
00:16:33
So yeah, I think making those notes
if you decide to do this journey
291
:
00:16:37
is a really good idea as well.
292
:
00:16:42
kev: Brilliant.
293
:
00:16:42
That reflection, being able to
look back, see how far you've come,
294
:
00:16:47
because that gives you confidence
for all sorts of things, not just for
295
:
00:16:51
driving, but other things in your life
that you might feel nervous about.
296
:
00:16:56
So you can apply it, it's like,
oh yeah, well I felt nervous about
297
:
00:16:59
that, but I can handle that level
of nervousness and do it anyway.
298
:
00:17:05
And it does rewire your brain,
it does retrain your brain.
299
:
00:17:10
amy: Yeah, it's, and also,
like, that you enjoy it, like,
300
:
00:17:15
a little bit as well, you know?
301
:
00:17:17
I feel like, uh, yeah, there's an
actual enjoyment to driving now,
302
:
00:17:23
it's not just like, uh, a necessity.
303
:
00:17:27
It's still, like, it's quite nice
to be able to just, like, hop
304
:
00:17:30
in the car and, and whatever.
305
:
00:17:32
So yeah, that comes eventually too,
which is a really nice feeling.
306
:
00:17:36
. kev: Amy, when we asked you if you'd
like to come on and share your story
307
:
00:17:40
with the listeners, was there anything
that you thought, Oh, I really want
308
:
00:17:44
to say that, or I really want to
get that across to other people?
309
:
00:17:49
Is there anything that we
haven't mentioned so far?
310
:
00:17:53
amy: I feel like I've
mentioned most of it.
311
:
00:17:55
I think I would just say like the not
jumping the gun, because I feel like where
312
:
00:18:02
before sort of like reaching out to you
guys, I was thinking, Oh, I can't do that.
313
:
00:18:07
I don't like going fast.
314
:
00:18:08
I don't like doing motorways and da
da da like, and actually like, You
315
:
00:18:13
don't need to think that far ahead.
316
:
00:18:15
But yeah, I would just say like, just
figuring out what your goal is and it
317
:
00:18:19
doesn't have to be like the same as
someone else's or like also not listening
318
:
00:18:23
to the pressure of other people.
319
:
00:18:25
Like my dad's always the one that's
like, Oh, you're driving up today or
320
:
00:18:28
whatever, like it's that sort of pressure.
321
:
00:18:31
Whereas actually, no, I'm not going to
do that yet, but I'm just going to do
322
:
00:18:35
What I want to do, what's important to me
and what's going to make my life easier.
323
:
00:18:39
and then, yeah, just being really,
really strong on that and not letting
324
:
00:18:42
other people sway you, um, or like
pressure you into doing things that you
325
:
00:18:46
don't want to do until you're ready.
326
:
00:18:48
And I think that's okay.
327
:
00:18:49
Um, just being not sort
of like kind to yourself.
328
:
00:18:53
kev: That's brilliant advice.
329
:
00:18:54
Very wise, very wise words, definitely.
330
:
00:18:58
Be kind to yourself.
331
:
00:18:59
I like that one.
332
:
00:19:00
I like that.
333
:
00:19:00
Yeah.
334
:
00:19:01
So in that case, Amy, I think that's
a great place to wrap it up and just
335
:
00:19:08
to say thank you so much for giving
the time over this evening to record
336
:
00:19:13
and share your story with others.
337
:
00:19:16
amy: no, thank you for having me.
338
:
00:19:18
I hope it's helpful.
339
:
00:19:19
Um, cause I remember I did listen
to your podcast before sort of
340
:
00:19:24
signing on and stuff like that.
341
:
00:19:25
And on other podcasts as well that I
think you sent me were really helpful too.
342
:
00:19:29
Cause you don't feel alone.
343
:
00:19:31
Um, cause I think with things like this,
you can often feel like you're the only
344
:
00:19:34
one that doesn't drive or whatever.
345
:
00:19:36
Um, but actually it's very common.
346
:
00:19:38
so yeah, I think.
347
:
00:19:40
Yeah, just sort of do like people
doing their own research and stuff and
348
:
00:19:43
then finding you guys was was great.
349
:
00:19:46
So thank you for all your help.
350
:
00:19:48
kev: You're very welcome.
351
:
00:19:50
Thank you, Amy.
352
:
00:19:51
amy: Thank you.
