Kev:

In today's episode, we're delighted to welcome on Steve, who has

2

:

been working with Kev in particular

to build his driving confidence.

3

:

So welcome, Steve.

4

:

Thank you for coming

along to this episode.

5

:

Steve: Hi, thanks for having me on.

6

:

Kev: Hi, Steve.

7

:

Nice to see you again.

8

:

Steve: Hiya.

9

:

Kev: So, Steve, all I'm going to ask

is, people that are listening to this,

10

:

tell me sort of like the rough outline

of just why you contacted us really.

11

:

Yeah, and what was going on for

you with your driving before

12

:

you got in touch with us?

13

:

Steve: Yeah.

14

:

So, I mean, I can go quite, quite

far back when, start of my driving

15

:

journey, I suppose, which was, You

know, I started learning to drive as

16

:

most people do when they're 17, it's

pretty excited to get on with it, had.

17

:

Not a great experience as my instructor

at the time knocked my confidence quite

18

:

a lot and essentially I just gave up

Thought maybe this isn't for me and just

19

:

left it there Yeah, fast forward about

20 years later With a baby on the way and

20

:

you know realization that it's probably

about time I got on with doing this

21

:

yeah, I did decide to get on with it.

22

:

I learned to drive.

23

:

I passed.

24

:

I was quite happy with with how it went.

25

:

Didn't get a car initially.

26

:

and in that time, kind of sat there.

27

:

you know, the sort of.

28

:

The fears that I maybe had previously

started coming back, the anxieties I'd

29

:

had previously started coming back, and

I just kind of allowed them to spiral

30

:

out of control really, where it got to

the point where even getting in the car

31

:

to drive, you know, out of the driveway

was quite a daunting prospect that

32

:

I had to really psych myself up for.

33

:

so, yeah, that's kind of where I was at.

34

:

And then I, yeah, came across

you guys online and got in touch.

35

:

Kev: Brilliant.

36

:

And I think it is great that you're able

to share that and willing to share that

37

:

with listeners, because I do think it's so

easy to let things spiral quite quickly.

38

:

And.

39

:

And that is, our brain is

all about safety, isn't it?

40

:

And so your brain was intent on

putting all these, you hadn't had

41

:

the opportunity to practice driving

very much for the first few months.

42

:

And so it built up in your mind into a

really, a real negative spiral, hadn't it?

43

:

Steve: yeah, absolutely.

44

:

And, you know, when, when I learned

to drive, it was very kind of, well,

45

:

obviously it was, you know, in the

local area, but it was all very

46

:

sort of slow 20 mile an hour roads.

47

:

And then, you know, which I

thought was great at the time.

48

:

So I was like, oh, this is

kind of, you know, this kind

49

:

of makes it easy, doesn't it?

50

:

But then afterwards I sort of realized,

oh, I haven't been on, like, yeah, You

51

:

know, a dual carriageway or a motorway, so

then that thought became really terrifying

52

:

actually to the point where, you know,

I would, I just wouldn't want to do it.

53

:

I could, I could probably go out for a

drive locally if I really had to, but

54

:

I wouldn't, wouldn't even, wouldn't

even contemplate the idea of going

55

:

on, um, yeah, going on the motorway.

56

:

Kev: Yeah, because you'd

never experienced it.

57

:

And it's fear of the unknown, isn't it?

58

:

And I remember when you first got in

touch, one of the things you were very

59

:

self aware, which was fantastic, because

that did a lot of the work for us almost,

60

:

because you were really aware of how, how

you, what of your thinking patterns and

61

:

what it was that you were thinking, and

what it was that was holding you back.

62

:

And also you did nip it in the

bud quite quickly, didn't you?

63

:

So.

64

:

It was only a few months that this

went on for before you sought help,

65

:

and I think that was probably quite.

66

:

Because it, you hadn't let it

build up over years and years

67

:

and years, like some people do.

68

:

So then you got to work with Kev.

69

:

Steve: I did.

70

:

Yeah.

71

:

Kev: You're so lucky.

72

:

You probably didn't

think that at the time.

73

:

Just drive here, Stu, just drive there.

74

:

You know, just drive down here.

75

:

So how did we, I spent the day with Steve,

and it really was about getting back

76

:

the confidence and building up to drive

on faster roads and hopefully gaining

77

:

the confidence on those faster roads.

78

:

So Steve, just quickly tell people

what you thought of the day.

79

:

What did you do?

80

:

What did we do?

81

:

Don't mention the pub.

82

:

Steve: It was, no, it was great.

83

:

I mean, you know, we took it very slowly.

84

:

I think I, you know, , I was, I was pretty

nervous about it, but I was also very

85

:

eager , to get it, to get it done, really.

86

:

So, yeah, you know, we

took it very slowly.

87

:

I immediately felt comfortable

when we got in the car.

88

:

Beforehand, I'd been viewing it as almost

like a driving lesson or a driving test.

89

:

You know, I was like, it's going

to be, it's going to be judging

90

:

me and everything that I do.

91

:

I very quickly realized

that was not the case.

92

:

and yeah, it became.

93

:

You know, yeah, pretty comfortable

and just got more and more comfortable

94

:

and confident as the day went on.

95

:

Really?

96

:

And yeah, as you say, you just

said, let's just drive somewhere

97

:

you want to go to start with.

98

:

You know, just drive around and then

I think we did that for 20 minutes

99

:

or so and then pulled up and you're

like, right, where do you want to go?

100

:

And then we just sort

of took it from there.

101

:

And yeah, you know, before, before I knew

it, I was driving on the A3 and the M25.

102

:

And I think, I think I turned around

to you at one point and said, Oh,

103

:

actually, this is better than driving,

uh, driving on the local roads.

104

:

It's much more fun.

105

:

Kev: So we, we started

to enjoy it, didn't we?

106

:

I think that was the, uh, and

it wasn't as, it wasn't as bad

107

:

as we was making out as well.

108

:

Those faster roads, obviously

they're different, but.

109

:

Steve: Yeah, no, it really

wasn't wasn't bad at all.

110

:

Yeah, I really enjoyed it.

111

:

Kev: And it sounds as if part of

it was just getting that experience

112

:

because you hadn't had it in lessons.

113

:

So it's taking away the unknown and

114

:

Steve: Yeah.

115

:

Kev: practicing it really.

116

:

Steve: Yeah, exactly.

117

:

And as you said, like, you know,

the biggest one of the biggest

118

:

factors with anxiety around lots of

things is the fear of the unknown.

119

:

and yeah, so once you could

once I could get past that.

120

:

It was, it just became so much

easier and just so much nicer.

121

:

And yeah, as you said, I was able to just

actually enjoy myself, enjoy driving.

122

:

Kev: Oh, which is just, I mean,

that's such a thrill, isn't it?

123

:

, to have somebody in a day go from

feeling really nervous and worried

124

:

about being judged to enjoying driving.

125

:

Oh, that is.

126

:

The ultimate really, isn't it?

127

:

That's exactly what we're aiming for.

128

:

So moving on from the day.

129

:

what's it been like?

130

:

Where have you been?

131

:

What have you done?

132

:

How are you feeling

about driving since then?

133

:

Steve: Well, how long have we got?

134

:

, I've, I mean, I, yeah, I drive,

I now drive to work twice a week,

135

:

which is about 25 miles away, which

involves going on the A3 and the M25.

136

:

I've driven, I was saying to Kev

actually a minute ago, I drove, We

137

:

had a holiday booked, I think, for

about a week and a half after I'd been

138

:

out with Kev for the day, and we were

planning to get the train to Gatwick.

139

:

And a few days before, I just

said, why don't we just, why

140

:

don't we just drive there?

141

:

Like, it doesn't cost, it costs

about the same to pay for parking.

142

:

So, yeah, kind of on a bit of a

whim, we just, I drove to Gatwick.

143

:

a week after that, I, Drove my

wife and son to Heathrow, dropped

144

:

them off, came back home on my own,

drove to pick them up a week later.

145

:

Yeah, I've just been kind of driving

anywhere and everywhere to be honest.

146

:

Kev: Oh, it's brilliant.

147

:

It's so fantastic to hear and that

all of those things that you wanted,

148

:

that was why you had your driving

lessons in the first place, isn't it?

149

:

Steve: Yeah, and I think the biggest

Yeah, the main thing about it is that

150

:

I've just been really enjoying it, and

it's almost like I look for reasons to

151

:

get out and drive rather than reasons

not to now, which is just, you know,

152

:

I can't believe I'm saying it, really.

153

:

Yeah,

154

:

Kev: I just drove to

Gatwick and I drove to

155

:

Heathrow

156

:

Steve: you know, it was nothing.

157

:

Kev: love that.

158

:

That's fantastic.

159

:

And before you got in touch with

us, would you have thought that

160

:

that was ever going to be possible?

161

:

Steve: Not really.

162

:

No, certainly not.

163

:

I certainly didn't think

I'd enjoy it anyway,

164

:

Kev: Yeah.

165

:

Steve: you know, I thought, and, and yeah,

I think there was definitely a point where

166

:

I thought it's just not going to happen.

167

:

Like, I'm just not, maybe I'm

just not cut out for this.

168

:

that was the thing that,

that played on my mind a lot.

169

:

So to go from that to, you

know, not even two months later.

170

:

Being to say I love driving

is just incredible really.

171

:

Kev: Oh, it's brilliant.

172

:

It's so good.

173

:

And I can't help but think this

is something that's transferable

174

:

into other things as well.

175

:

So when there are other challenges

in the future, because life

176

:

is challenging, isn't it?

177

:

Without a doubt.

178

:

So when there are other challenges

in the future, this is something that

179

:

you'll be able to look back on and think,

Ah, well, you know, that's how I felt.

180

:

But then with, some work, I

felt completely differently.

181

:

And so it might be something that

you can transfer into other things

182

:

in your life later on as well.

183

:

Steve: Yeah, absolutely I I completely

agree and I think one of the one of

184

:

the Sort of biggest things I kind of

learned from this was actually listening

185

:

to one of your other podcasts was it?

186

:

It's uh, josh, joshua

fletcher, isn't it anxiety?

187

:

Josh?

188

:

I think he's called on uh on instagram

where he talks about the fear of Like

189

:

fearing fear itself, and if you, you know,

how you can sort of, you know, and I think

190

:

that's the problem I had really was the,

you know, the fear of, like, panicking

191

:

in the car or something like that.

192

:

and yeah, and I think you can,

I can apply that to all sorts of

193

:

different things, the fear of being

afraid and realizing that actually

194

:

that's not necessarily a bad thing.

195

:

Kev: absolutely.

196

:

And that that is one of

the real things about this.

197

:

It was probably never about the driving.

198

:

The driving is almost a red herring.

199

:

It is that it's that not

wanting to feel uncomfortable.

200

:

It's that not wanting to feel the

way that driving made you feel.

201

:

And so it is.

202

:

avoiding that feeling, as opposed to,

it's not really about the driving.

203

:

And once you can get the skills of

driving and get to like it, then actually

204

:

you stop fearing the fear as well.

205

:

And

206

:

Steve: it has just given me confidence

just generally, you know, so you feel

207

:

like I've got the days that I drive.

208

:

You know, into work or something, I've

got a little extra spring in my step

209

:

because I've just sort of, you know, I

feel quite, quite pleased with myself

210

:

that I've done it and just leaves you with

a nice feeling for the rest of the day.

211

:

Kev: even me and Steve were

talking and people at work are

212

:

saying, who's that car outside?

213

:

Steve: Yeah, yeah.

214

:

And I'm like, that's my car.

215

:

Kev: Yeah,

216

:

Steve: drove it.

217

:

Kev: Yeah.

218

:

And I just love that.

219

:

I just love where you've come

from and where you are now.

220

:

It is, it is just brilliant.

221

:

Yes.

222

:

And that's why we, we do what we do.

223

:

That's why we do what we do, isn't it?

224

:

Yeah.

225

:

Because it is changeable.

226

:

Yeah.

227

:

Steve: Yeah, absolutely.

228

:

I'm so, so grateful to you

both for helping me with this.

229

:

It is, it has quite

literally changed my life.

230

:

So yeah, thank you.

231

:

Thank you.

232

:

Yeah, very, very grateful.

233

:

Kev: Thank you.

234

:

Hello.

235

:

We've got to ask a couple

of questions, haven't we?

236

:

So what we normally do, this is

where, Tracy normally does this

237

:

bit, but obviously I've been given

the reins, so it'll probably go

238

:

wrong with these questions now.

239

:

Steve: Okay.

240

:

Kev: so thinking back to your, your

driving lessons, what's the one

241

:

thing that you found most difficult?

242

:

So,

243

:

Steve: Oh, gosh,

244

:

that is, that is a tough question.

245

:

One thing I found most difficult, I

would say, The one thing I found most

246

:

difficult consistently was just relaxing.

247

:

Just, you know, stopping my body

from being really tense the whole

248

:

time, gripping the steering wheel,

just kind of relaxing into it.

249

:

Kev: That's a really good answer because

that is a problem for so many people and

250

:

of course if you are holding yourself

tight, nothing feels comfortable, does it?

251

:

So it, yeah.

252

:

It's like a white knuckle

ride, isn't it, almost?

253

:

Steve: Yeah, yeah, yeah.

254

:

Absolutely.

255

:

Kev: and, and feeling like that does

increase, that does change the way you

256

:

feel as well, so that physical body

posture will change the messages to the

257

:

brain, so it makes you more on guard

in a way, because you're, because,

258

:

because you haven't relaxed into it.

259

:

So yeah, great answer.

260

:

So, did you find any strategies?

261

:

What, how, how do you feel now?

262

:

How did, what did you do?

263

:

What have you done since to

be able to feel more relaxed?

264

:

Steve: Well, I think generally just being

more confident, obviously has made me feel

265

:

more relaxed, but actually there's a tip

that Kev gave me when we were out driving,

266

:

When you said just grip the steering

wheel really tight for a few seconds

267

:

and then let go, not let go, but,

you know, let go of the tension.

268

:

so a couple of times I've done that

actually, when I've sort of just noticed,

269

:

you know, my shoulders are a bit tense

or I'm just, you know, feeling a bit,

270

:

maybe it's not even related to driving.

271

:

I'm just feeling a bit

stressed about something else.

272

:

And I'll just do that for a couple

of seconds and then release it.

273

:

And I'm like, ah, it feels so much better.

274

:

Kev: And that is a great tip because

when you tell yourself to relax, it's

275

:

really hard to do, but it's actually

quite easy to tighten up more.

276

:

So in the tightness.

277

:

that more is then easier

to let go a little bit.

278

:

So, whereas just trying to relax a bit

from where you are is really hard to do.

279

:

So, yeah, that's a, it's a

great, it's a really handy tip.

280

:

Tighten up more and then just, it's much

easier to just release a little bit.

281

:

So, brilliant.

282

:

Fantastic.

283

:

Steve, thank you so much for coming

on and sharing your experience.

284

:

And I think that that's going to be

really inspirational for other people

285

:

listening, just that idea that you

can change the way that you feel

286

:

about driving and you're living proof.

287

:

Steve: Yeah, absolutely.

288

:

, it's definitely possible.

289

:

You can go from being terrified to

even get in the car to a month and

290

:

a half later driving to Heathrow

airport and not giving it much thought.

291

:

It's definitely possible.

292

:

But yeah, thank you.

293

:

Thank you both so much.

294

:

Kev: It was a pleasure, Steve.

295

:

I really enjoyed the day.

296

:

So thank you.

297

:

Thank you.
