Speaker:
00:00:00
Hello there and welcome back to another
episode of the Podcasting with me, Verity.
2
:
00:00:06
I am feeling very lazy, very apt for the
podcast title because I'm actually lying
3
:
00:00:11
down on the floor recording this episode,
but If you listened to two episodes ago, I
4
:
00:00:17
explained to you my new podcasting setup.
5
:
00:00:19
I'm currently batch recording for May.
6
:
00:00:22
It's the 5th of May and I'm currently
batch recording for episodes
7
:
00:00:26
throughout the month of May.
8
:
00:00:27
And as I said, I've currently
lost my podcasting studio and I
9
:
00:00:30
haven't had got a new setup yet.
10
:
00:00:33
So I'm just in the corner of the Bedroom,
but I don't have the computer on a
11
:
00:00:38
desk or anything and I was holding the
microphone and my back was just getting
12
:
00:00:42
sore So now I'm lying on the floor but
it proves the point that you can podcast
13
:
00:00:47
from anywhere you do not need a Fancy
setup or anything like that in order to
14
:
00:00:52
have a quote unquote successful podcast
Do I think my podcast is successful?
15
:
00:00:57
Actually, I'm going to be big headed
and say yes because You of the amount
16
:
00:01:00
of people who contact me and say
that the podcast has really helped
17
:
00:01:05
them on their podcasting journey or
it's given them a fresh perspective
18
:
00:01:08
on a particular podcasting topic.
19
:
00:01:10
So for me, that is success.
20
:
00:01:13
And we do work very well in different
charts, particularly good pods.
21
:
00:01:17
Today we are talking about how
to get multiple podcast episodes
22
:
00:01:22
from one guest interview.
23
:
00:01:25
So what you may have noticed, and
I'm going to link all of the episodes
24
:
00:01:29
that I talk about down in the show
notes for you to check them out.
25
:
00:01:32
But I have had Adam Shibley from
podcasting business school supposedly
26
:
00:01:39
on this podcast four times.
27
:
00:01:41
And what I mean by that is because
I have had four episodes that have
28
:
00:01:45
featured Adam on this podcast.
29
:
00:01:48
And as I said, I'm going to have those
all linked down below so you can go
30
:
00:01:50
back and listen to those episodes.
31
:
00:01:53
But the interesting thing is I
only hung out with Adam for one
32
:
00:01:58
hour, one interview, and that
turned into four podcast episodes.
33
:
00:02:04
Because essentially we covered four
key topics when I was interviewing him.
34
:
00:02:10
Now, bear in mind, my
episodes are normally, like,
35
:
00:02:13
what, 10 to 15 minutes long?
36
:
00:02:14
So, I wanted to be able to break
the interview I had with him down to
37
:
00:02:20
respect those timings, and also to make
sure that you guys, my audience, were
38
:
00:02:26
getting exactly what I was promising
from the episode titles and notes.
39
:
00:02:30
Because we all know there's nothing
worse than listening to a podcast episode
40
:
00:02:35
which promises one thing in a title.
41
:
00:02:37
And then you have to get like halfway
through the episode before it actually
42
:
00:02:40
gets to that point or within five
minutes, it's covered that point.
43
:
00:02:43
And then it's all just filler and
I don't know, nonsense or whatever.
44
:
00:02:47
People like to know that they are getting
what they're signing up for, for a show.
45
:
00:02:52
Otherwise you just click off and people
aren't interested in the show and they
46
:
00:02:54
don't come back for another episode,
which is just devastating in my opinion.
47
:
00:02:58
So yes, when Adam and I talked,
when I interviewed Adam.
48
:
00:03:01
As I said, we covered four podcasting
topics, which I felt broke down really,
49
:
00:03:07
really nicely in 10 to 15 minute segments
that I then divided up into four episodes.
50
:
00:03:13
First of all, I got four episodes
worth of content out of one
51
:
00:03:16
hour's worth of recording.
52
:
00:03:17
And then for Adam, not that he
needs the additional exposure, but
53
:
00:03:21
for Adam, he then got four episodes
worth of promotion out of my podcast.
54
:
00:03:28
For him and more promotion for him as
well, because all of his links were
55
:
00:03:32
still in the show notes, regardless
of whether or not we spoke about
56
:
00:03:37
them in that particular episode.
57
:
00:03:39
So that was great for me because
it was so much content and I split
58
:
00:03:43
it up how I put it out there.
59
:
00:03:45
I didn't have it all go out in
same month or in one hit all in the
60
:
00:03:49
same day, which you could do if you
wanted to, but I just, I broke it up.
61
:
00:03:52
So that was great for me and similar.
62
:
00:03:55
Back in April, I had Sarah from CopyHop,
who I did two episodes with her.
63
:
00:04:03
Again, it was one interview.
64
:
00:04:05
Now, I'd got a little bit wiser to
the fact of doing this technique of
65
:
00:04:10
multiple episodes from one interview
from doing Adam's interview.
66
:
00:04:14
And I actually said to Sarah when I first
went on, I was like, look, I know that we
67
:
00:04:17
want to talk about these two things, but
before I hit record, would it be okay with
68
:
00:04:22
you if we said hi and did all that thing,
we talked about this one topic, and then
69
:
00:04:28
we kind of signed off, and then we take
a couple of breaths, and then we go into
70
:
00:04:34
another quote unquote episode, and You
then get two episodes out of it, I get two
71
:
00:04:39
episodes out of it, double the promotion
for you, double the content for me.
72
:
00:04:43
I said it will be a little bit strange
because I will be saying bye to you,
73
:
00:04:47
and then about 30 seconds later I'll
be saying hey, welcome back to the
74
:
00:04:50
show, it's great to have you on again.
75
:
00:04:52
But she was so great and she was
like, yeah, that's so, that's great.
76
:
00:04:55
Let's just maximize our time together.
77
:
00:04:57
And she was grateful because as I said,
it was two lots of promotion for her.
78
:
00:05:01
I got two lots of content.
79
:
00:05:03
We covered two amazing topics that just
wouldn't have made much sense for me.
80
:
00:05:08
I don't think to be putting into.
81
:
00:05:11
into just one episode
or not breaking them up.
82
:
00:05:14
So I think that that's a way that
if you know that you want to talk
83
:
00:05:18
to a guest about topics, which, you
know, they obviously have a crossover
84
:
00:05:24
because otherwise, why would you be
talking to them for your podcast?
85
:
00:05:27
But maybe they are different
topics in the scheme of things.
86
:
00:05:31
So, um, You could approach them and say,
you know, is that okay if I either just
87
:
00:05:37
record as one massive long conversation
But I am gonna chop it up into multiple
88
:
00:05:41
episodes or as I did with Sarah because we
knew that we were going to talk about two
89
:
00:05:45
very different topics actually recording
them as separate episodes, but on the
90
:
00:05:51
same interview, then why not go for that?
91
:
00:05:54
I think sometimes we make things
really difficult for ourselves by
92
:
00:05:59
being like, oh, I'll get back in touch
because I'd love to have you on the
93
:
00:06:01
podcast to talk about that exact thing.
94
:
00:06:04
If you've got that person there, why
not just talk about it there and then?
95
:
00:06:07
Now if your episodes are an hour,
hour and a half long, then maybe
96
:
00:06:11
recording back to back episodes, that
could actually be quite traumatic
97
:
00:06:15
almost for everybody involved.
98
:
00:06:17
So obviously, this is really going to
factor into how long your episodes are.
99
:
00:06:21
But even if your episodes are
like, what, 20, 30 minutes long, or
100
:
00:06:26
Even if they are 40 minutes long,
book out an hour of your time.
101
:
00:06:29
Maybe do slightly shorter episodes
with, with that individual.
102
:
00:06:33
Two 30 minute episodes, or a 40
minute and a 20 minute episode.
103
:
00:06:36
Because you think, once somebody's
already introduced themselves once,
104
:
00:06:39
they don't really need to do that
again for a follow up episode.
105
:
00:06:43
So get clever with the time that you
have with a guest, particularly if
106
:
00:06:48
you know what you would want them
on a subsequent episode for, just
107
:
00:06:52
maximize that time as much as possible.
108
:
00:06:55
Now, you don't have to do that,
and sometimes it wouldn't make
109
:
00:06:58
sense to do that, so I did an
interview Matt from the life shift
110
:
00:07:03
then Chris from Podtastic Audio.
111
:
00:07:05
I interviewed them both back in
December of:
2023
112
:
00:07:12
For and their episodes, I
didn't cut up those episodes.
113
:
00:07:15
I did put out as the full 40.
114
:
00:07:18
I think there were nearly 40 minute
interviews, maybe 20 between there was
115
:
00:07:21
somewhere between 20 and 40 minutes
that those interviews went out.
116
:
00:07:24
Now, the reason I didn't chop those up was
because we didn't jump around the topic
117
:
00:07:29
so much and we kept much more on topic.
118
:
00:07:32
the same conversation.
119
:
00:07:34
And also, at the time, I was just
experimenting with longer episodes.
120
:
00:07:38
I wanted to see whether or not
having longer episodes made any
121
:
00:07:42
effect to my download numbers.
122
:
00:07:45
Alert.
123
:
00:07:45
It did.
124
:
00:07:46
didn't.
125
:
00:07:46
It made no impact to my
download numbers at all.
126
:
00:07:49
I didn't see an increase, didn't
see a decrease, which was good.
127
:
00:07:51
And I wanted to see if my listeners
were turned off by a couple of longer
128
:
00:07:56
episodes, you know, whether or not my
retention for the episodes was better.
129
:
00:08:01
So like how long people listened
for, or if it was worse.
130
:
00:08:04
And again, spoiler alert,
I found no difference.
131
:
00:08:07
I found that people stuck around
for the information, even though
132
:
00:08:10
the episode was longer than they
might be used to from this podcast,
133
:
00:08:13
because the information was valuable.
134
:
00:08:15
So they still stuck around and
listened to the longer episodes,
135
:
00:08:18
which was great feedback for me.
136
:
00:08:20
And also thank you to everyone
who listened to the episodes.
137
:
00:08:22
Again, all be linked
down in the show notes.
138
:
00:08:24
But after those two longer interviews, I
wanted to go back to some shorter episodes
139
:
00:08:29
and stick closer to the ethos of this
podcast of 10 to 15 minutes interviews.
140
:
00:08:34
That's exactly what I did.
141
:
00:08:35
So, It's almost similar to what
I was talking about a couple of
142
:
00:08:39
episodes ago about are you killing
your episode's own growth by not
143
:
00:08:43
experimenting with different things?
144
:
00:08:45
And this is a definite experiment.
145
:
00:08:48
So, you know, could you be chopping
up your interviews into multiple
146
:
00:08:53
episodes to maximize your time?
147
:
00:08:57
with that individual.
148
:
00:08:59
And like I said, I think that's brilliant
because if I was, if I gave somebody a one
149
:
00:09:03
hour interview, even 40 minute interview,
and then they split that up into even
150
:
00:09:07
just two episodes, that's twice as much
coverage for me because each time they
151
:
00:09:13
promote one of those episodes, that's me
getting that promotion and that coverage,
152
:
00:09:19
which I think is fantastic opportunity.
153
:
00:09:22
If you do want to experiment with
longer interviews, again, why not?
154
:
00:09:25
But I hope that you have got
something that you can take away
155
:
00:09:29
from this episode about multiple
episodes from one interview.
156
:
00:09:34
Definitely have a go and see whether
or not it's a format or a strategy
157
:
00:09:38
that is going to work for your show.
158
:
00:09:41
Otherwise, I'm Verity.
159
:
00:09:42
This has been The Lazy
Girl's Guide to Podcasting.
160

00:09:45
Please share this episode with a fellow
podcaster if you think they'll find it
161
:
00:09:50
helpful and I will see you next episode.
162
:
00:09:52
Happy podcasting.
