“Lights In The Sky”

Please enjoy:

by J.F.R. Coates, Part 1 of 2

Please enjoy:

The Asteroid Belt was a cold, dark place.

Please enjoy:

But more than that, it was isolated.

Please enjoy:

Each small chunk of rock

Please enjoy:

slowly orbited Sol on its own.

Please enjoy:

Only very rarely was a rock close enough to another

Please enjoy:

that they were visible from each other.

Please enjoy:

Usually there was nothing but an endless black sky

Please enjoy:

filled with thousands of stars.

Please enjoy:

Even the closest star,

Please enjoy:

Sol, did little but burn the eyes of those who looked towards it without their visors down. 2557RA3 was no different to most asteroids.

Please enjoy:

It was small, only a few kilometres across,

Please enjoy:

and shaped roughly like a peanut.

Please enjoy:

The asteroid spun quickly as it orbited Sol,

Please enjoy:

about halfway between Mars and Jupiter,

Please enjoy:

thousands of miles from

Please enjoy:

anything else of note in the belt.

Please enjoy:

It also had a landing craft on its surface.

Please enjoy:

A sleek, bright ship was precariously perched on the tiny rock.

Please enjoy:

Big red letters were emblazoned on the side of the craft. ‘Masterson

Please enjoy:

Minerals’.

Please enjoy:

A large silo had been constructed

Please enjoy:

on one of the few smooth regions of the asteroid.

Please enjoy:

To its side was a small hut

Please enjoy:

that would be the shelter for the miners

Please enjoy:

that would be taking residence on their lonely rock.

Please enjoy:

Both structures gleamed

Please enjoy:

in the bright, pure light from Sol.

Please enjoy:

Once the structures were complete,

Please enjoy:

the ship departed from the asteroid.

Please enjoy:

It wasn’t long before it was just a tiny

Please enjoy:

pinprick of light

Please enjoy:

amongst a field of thousands of over

Please enjoy:

small, white lights.

Please enjoy:

The three starats left behind on the surface of the asteroid

Please enjoy:

knew it would be the last contact they’d have for a very long time.

Please enjoy:

They stared up into the dark sky

Please enjoy:

until they had lost sight of the ship entirely.

Please enjoy:

The starat on the right of the trio turned to face his companions.

Please enjoy:

Their thick, clumsy spacesuits

Please enjoy:

made it hard to tell each other apart,

Please enjoy:

and Leandro couldn’t tell which of the two was Christie

Please enjoy:

and which was Ellen.

Please enjoy:

“Well, we are here for three months.

Please enjoy:

Shall we see what toys they have given us,”

Please enjoy:

Leandro said. He had to hold his hand to the side of his helmet to talk.

Please enjoy:

There was a button

Please enjoy:

which activated the speakers to communicate with the other two headsets,

Please enjoy:

or else any sound they made would be lost to the vacuum that surrounded them.

Please enjoy:

“Bet you one meal that it’s rusted crap that barely works,”

Please enjoy:

the starat in the middle said.

Please enjoy:

Leandro recognised Christie’s voice.

Please enjoy:

No one took up Christie’s bet,

Please enjoy:

though Leandro doubted they would have been given anything of particular quality.

Please enjoy:

The humans wouldn’t give starats the best materials.

Please enjoy:

Leandro muttered a few choice words

Please enjoy:

in the silence of his helmet

Please enjoy:

as he carefully made his way across the surface of the asteroid.

Please enjoy:

The three walked hand in hand;

Please enjoy:

a promise they had made to each other to do until they had

Please enjoy:

hammered in the tether lines that would keep them more secure to the small rock.

Please enjoy:

The silo had looked huge when it had been installed,

Please enjoy:

but as the three starats approached it

Please enjoy:

they truly got a sense of its sheer scale.

Please enjoy:

It was gigantic, taller than some skyscrapers on Terra.

Please enjoy:

“We’re going to have to hollow out this rock if we want to fill that,”

Please enjoy:

Ellen said. She slapped her hand against the side of the gigantic structure.

Please enjoy:

Leandro could feel the vibrations through their interlinked arms,

Please enjoy:

but it was eerie that he couldn’t actually hear the impact.

Please enjoy:

“We have three months for it,”

Please enjoy:

Leandro replied. They lingered for a few moments longer,

Please enjoy:

their necks craned as they looked up towards the distant top of the silo,

Please enjoy:

before they slowly moved around to their accommodation.

Please enjoy:

It looked tiny in comparison.

Please enjoy:

The small hut was tall enough a human could have stood up in it,

Please enjoy:

so for a starat it was certainly comfortable.

Please enjoy:

Solar panels coated the roof,

Please enjoy:

providing them with the power they’d need to run the few systems they had available to them.

Please enjoy:

Leandro pulled open the door,

Please enjoy:

only to find a second, sturdier door within.

Please enjoy:

“Holy shit, they actually gave us an airlock,”

Please enjoy:

Ellen crowed in delight.

Please enjoy:

She slapped Leandro’s shoulder,

Please enjoy:

and the starat felt his feet lift off the ground in response.

Please enjoy:

He quickly braced his hands against the door,

Please enjoy:

gripping onto it with as much force as he could muster through the space suit.

Please enjoy:

Ellen gently tugged him back down.

Please enjoy:

“Sorry.” Leandro slowly let out the breath he had been holding.

Please enjoy:

He could feel the hammering of his heart.

Please enjoy:

One misstep before they got the tethers down could be fatal.

Please enjoy:

His hand shook as he fumbled for the button on the side of his helmet.

Please enjoy:

“We should get inside.”

Please enjoy:

They could only go through the airlock one at a time,

Please enjoy:

as it wouldn’t fit any more than that.

Please enjoy:

The doors were slow,

Please enjoy:

but when Leandro stepped inside the small room his helmet pinged a notification that he was in a safe breathing environment.

Please enjoy:

He fumbled around the back of his neck to find the clasps that kept his helmet in place,

Please enjoy:

before gratefully removing it.

Please enjoy:

The grey-furred starat shook his head

Please enjoy:

to loosen up his fur.

Please enjoy:

He was a weasel-like creature,

Please enjoy:

covered in a thick layer of fur that was almost pinched and compressed inside suits designed for short humans.

Please enjoy:

His lone remaining ear had been

Please enjoy:

constantly crushed down against the top of his skull

Please enjoy:

inside the ill-fitting helmet,

Please enjoy:

and he was not looking forward to dealing with that for so long.

Please enjoy:

Leandro brushed a gloved hand over the grey and black fur of his muzzle

Please enjoy:

as he looked around the small room.

Please enjoy:

Three beds lined one wall.

Please enjoy:

Stacks of dehydrated meals lined the opposite wall.

Please enjoy:

Other supplies were bundled together at the far end of the room.

Please enjoy:

Beneath his feet was the bare rock of the asteroid.

Please enjoy:

An airtight seal was maintained at the base of the structure by a thick layer of a flexible

Please enjoy:

rubbery material that

Please enjoy:

Leandro didn’t dare touch,

Please enjoy:

just in case it compromised its integrity.

Please enjoy:

Ellen was next to come in.

Please enjoy:

Seeing Leandro with his helmet off,

Please enjoy:

she immediately removed hers.

Please enjoy:

Like Leandro, she rubbed her ears as she held her helmet under her arm.

Please enjoy:

“Ow, they did not make these suits for starats, did they?”

Please enjoy:

“My tail is awfully cramped,” Leandro

Please enjoy:

replied. He gently placed his helmet down on the closest of the beds.

Please enjoy:

As much as he hated the thing,

Please enjoy:

he didn’t want to toss it aside as it was the only thing that would keep him alive outside of the tiny room.

Please enjoy:

“I am not wearing it for three months solid, I can tell you that right now.”

Please enjoy:

“Typical male. Around two lovely ladies by yourself for three months, and you’re already talking about getting naked,”

Please enjoy:

Ellen said. She laughed and stuck her tongue out at Leandro’s flustered attempts at responding. “Nah,

Please enjoy:

I get you. These things are awful.

Please enjoy:

Keeps riding up into places I do not want it to go.”

Please enjoy:

Leandro wrinkled up his muzzle and turned to search through some of the provided supplies.

Please enjoy:

He found the tethers and ropes,

Please enjoy:

and he could only hope that there was enough to create safe paths across the asteroid.

Please enjoy:

There was nothing to actually drill for the minerals,

Please enjoy:

but he assumed that they would be kept within the silo.

Please enjoy:

The starat held out a couple of packets of dehydrated food.

Please enjoy:

Within the wrappers, the food looked just like a bar of indistinct brown mush,

Please enjoy:

but Leandro had survived off similar before.

Please enjoy:

He had often found it didn’t usually taste terrible.

Please enjoy:

So long as you forced yourself to forget what food tasted like.

Please enjoy:

“I shall ration these out properly later,

Please enjoy:

but why not have a celebratory meal now?

Please enjoy:

We are here, conditions are... decent.

Please enjoy:

And then we can get to work later.”

Please enjoy:

“Sounds delightful,”

Please enjoy:

Christie replied.

Please enjoy:

The other starat had removed her helmet as well,

Please enjoy:

holding it securely beneath her arm.

Please enjoy:

She twitched her muzzle and stuck her tongue out,

Please enjoy:

but she still caught the bar as it slowly floated through the air.

Please enjoy:

Together, the three starats unwrapped their first meal and tentatively bit into the bar at the same time. “Oh that’s brilliant,”

Please enjoy:

Ellen said, her ears perking up.

Please enjoy:

She looked around her small group of companions with a grimace across her muzzle.

Please enjoy:

“I can really taste the cardboard.”

Please enjoy:

“It is all we have, I fear.

Please enjoy:

I think they might be all the same flavour too,”

Please enjoy:

Leandro replied with a laugh.

Please enjoy:

He ran his gloved hand over the stacks of bars that were piled up along one wall.

Please enjoy:

Every single one looked identical.

Please enjoy:

“They have a flavour?”

Please enjoy:

Christie asked. She sniffed at the bar and shrugged her shoulders.

Please enjoy:

“Could be worse. They don’t taste bad,

Please enjoy:

I suppose. But I sure as shit wouldn’t say they have a flavour.”

Please enjoy:

“At least they remembered to give us food.

Please enjoy:

I heard there was one mining station set up, and the crew starved after just a couple of days,”

Please enjoy:

Ellen said. She shuddered as she tried to throw herself down onto the bed.

Please enjoy:

Instead, she just drifted down slowly and bounced slightly off the mattress.

Please enjoy:

Leandro placed his hands on his hips

Please enjoy:

as he looked at the two other starats.

Please enjoy:

His ears flicked.

Please enjoy:

“Well, we will not starve.

Please enjoy:

There is food and water here. We have oxygen for the full three months,

Please enjoy:

and even a generous couple of days extra.

Please enjoy:

It may not be comfortable,

Please enjoy:

but we have all we need right here.”

Please enjoy:

A genuine smile broke across his muzzle.

Please enjoy:

“And best yet, we have no humans breathing over our necks.”

Please enjoy:

“Think they’ll extend my contract here if I ask nicely?”

Please enjoy:

Ellen asked. She swallowed down another mouthful of her flavourless bar of indeterminate food.

Please enjoy:

She held the rest of the bar up above her face.

Please enjoy:

“You know, I think this is really starting to grow on me.” ***

Please enjoy:

Once they had finished their meals,

Please enjoy:

the three starats started to prepare their work area for the next three months.

Please enjoy:

The most important task was to lay down the tethers that would keep them secured to the rock’s surface.

Please enjoy:

The thick ropes were secured to the silo and housing hut first,

Please enjoy:

before they were hammered down into the rocky surface of the asteroid.

Please enjoy:

It was stressful work,

Please enjoy:

as every time Leandro hammered the pegs down into the rock,

Please enjoy:

he could feel the momentum threatening to push him up off the surface.

Please enjoy:

If it wasn’t for Christie and Ellen holding him down,

Please enjoy:

themselves tethered to the previous section,

Please enjoy:

then he probably would have drifted away.

Please enjoy:

Over a few hours,

Please enjoy:

paths were laid out between the silo, housing, and the first area that had been designated for drilling.

Please enjoy:

The entire asteroid had been surveyed months earlier,

Please enjoy:

and all the likely regions for the rich minerals had all been highlighted on the maps provided.

Please enjoy:

It wasn’t until they drilled into the rock

Please enjoy:

before they’d know if those surveys had been correct or not. Once the tethers were

Please enjoy:

laid out, the three starats could walk across the surface

Please enjoy:

without constantly feeling like they were one trip away from floating into empty space.

Please enjoy:

Instead they just needed to be careful the hooks were securely fastened to their suits

Please enjoy:

and to the guiding ropes.

Please enjoy:

As Leandro had expected,

Please enjoy:

the mining equipment was all in the silo.

Please enjoy:

It was all designed to be carried by hand,

Please enjoy:

with a large wagon that could be pushed to and from the mining sites around the asteroid.

Please enjoy:

Everything looked

Please enjoy:

rudimentary, and Leandro knew there was better technology available,

Please enjoy:

but he had always known that wouldn’t be spared for a simple starat crew.

Please enjoy:

After several hours of preparation, Leandro was finally confident that everything was ready for use.

Please enjoy:

The pathways were tethered,

Please enjoy:

the equipment was installed.

Please enjoy:

All that was left to do was to begin,

Please enjoy:

but before they did so, Leandro had them all sit down in the massive silo that would soon,

Please enjoy:

hopefully, be filled with rich ores and other precious materials.

Please enjoy:

“I want no one working out there by themselves,” he said.

Please enjoy:

He remained standing as he slowly paced around the cavernous space.

Please enjoy:

No matter how far away he walked from them,

Please enjoy:

or in what direction he was facing,

Please enjoy:

he knew they would hear him clearly through their helmet speakers.

Please enjoy:

“But nor do I want all of us out there at the same time.

Please enjoy:

We’ve been set some pretty optimistic targets in how much minerals we’re to extract,

Please enjoy:

so we’ll need to be working pretty much constantly.

Please enjoy:

We shall have five hour shifts,

Please enjoy:

as our suits can hold six hours of oxygen at a time.

Please enjoy:

Two shifts on, one shift off.

Please enjoy:

We can rotate so there’s always one starat at base,

Please enjoy:

and two mining. Does that sound fair?”

Please enjoy:

Ellen shrugged her shoulders.

Please enjoy:

“I can’t think of anything better.

Please enjoy:

Who gets first rest?”

Please enjoy:

“You can have first rest,” Leandro replied.

Please enjoy:

“Then you can, Christie.

Please enjoy:

I rested on the ship, so I will be fine to work for a while.”

Please enjoy:

“Sounds fair to me,” Christie said.

Please enjoy:

She carefully rose to her feet.

Please enjoy:

Even tethered inside the silo,

Please enjoy:

none of the starats particularly wanted to feel themselves float off the surface too much.

Please enjoy:

It was uncomfortable at the best of times.

Please enjoy:

“Shall we get going then?”

Please enjoy:

Leandro was the closest to the doors,

Please enjoy:

so he pushed them open.

Please enjoy:

The dim light that had been illuminating the silo switched off behind them.

Please enjoy:

The darkness was never quite total on the asteroid,

Please enjoy:

as the gleam of the starlight constantly shone down around them.

Please enjoy:

Even when Sol was hidden,

Please enjoy:

there was always a small glow around the close horizons.

Please enjoy:

The glow was particularly strong to one side.

Please enjoy:

Leandro put out his arms to stop the other two starats from walking past him.

Please enjoy:

They stopped behind him, and he pressed in the speaker on his helmet.

Please enjoy:

“Visors on full tint.”

Please enjoy:

“It’s still dark,” Ellen said.

Please enjoy:

“Full tint. Trust me,

Please enjoy:

you’ll want to see this,”

Please enjoy:

Leandro replied. He pointed towards the brightest point on the horizon

Please enjoy:

as he darkened his visor.

Please enjoy:

Everything went almost pitch black,

Please enjoy:

but for the pinprick of light

Please enjoy:

as Sol slowly started to emerge from beyond the horizon.

Please enjoy:

Rays of light pierced through the craters and blemishes on the surface of the crater.

Please enjoy:

Even through the fully tinted visor,

Please enjoy:

the light was bright and powerful,

Please enjoy:

forcing Leandro to avert his eyes as they started to water.

Please enjoy:

For a brief moment,

Please enjoy:

the entire asteroid appeared to glow

Please enjoy:

as the sunlight reflected off the fine layer of dust coating the rock.

Please enjoy:

All was still and silent.

Please enjoy:

“It’s beautiful,” Christie whispered.

Please enjoy:

Leandro smiled. He spoke into his helmet,

Please enjoy:

his voice heard only by his own cramped ear.

Please enjoy:

“It really is. The most beautiful thing I have ever seen.

Please enjoy:

We can be like the explorers of old,

Please enjoy:

seeing wonders that are innocent and pure.”

Please enjoy:

He looked up to the distant stars.

Please enjoy:

“Oh, to have that life.”
