Broadcasting from the Crazy Rainbow Lodge, Marvin and Dustin reflect on the tragic impact of recent events in Southwest Virginia, East Tennessee and Western North Carolina. Despite the challenges, they highlight the inspiring response from the fly fishing community, emphasizing the long-term recovery efforts needed and how listeners can contribute to the cause.

Dustin shares his experiences from Central Wyoming, where the fall cool-off is in full swing. He provides a detailed fishing report, noting the excellent dry fly action with tricos and baetis in the mornings. As the sun rises, fishing strategies shift, with caddis hatches becoming prolific in the evening. Dustin offers valuable tips on effective streamer patterns and the importance of adapting to water clarity and conditions.

The episode also delves into the unique experience of staying at Crazy Rainbow Lodge. With three different lodging options, guests can enjoy family-style meals, private fishing access and the warm western hospitality of Lori’s renowned culinary skills. Whether guests prefer a more intimate fishing trip or a larger group setting, the lodge offers accommodations to suit every preference.

Marvin Cash:

Hey, folks, it's Marvin Cash, the host of the articulate fly.

Marvin Cash:

We're back with another on the water with Dustin White.

Marvin Cash:

Dustin, how are you doing?

Dustin White:

Well, Marvin, how are you doing?

Dustin White:

I'm hanging out here at the crazy Rainbow Lodge, but, you know, thinking about you and all our friends back east.

Marvin Cash:

Yeah, absolutely.

Marvin Cash:

It's been.

Marvin Cash:

It's been absolutely tragic.

Marvin Cash:

I mean, we were lucky here in Charlotte.

Marvin Cash:

Yeah.

Marvin Cash:

We got, you know, quite honestly, not even a lot of rain and.

Marvin Cash:

But our friends in, you know, southwest Virginia, east Tennessee and western North Carolina, I mean, it's.

Marvin Cash:

It's going to be years and to get things kind of back on track and, you know, it's hard.

Marvin Cash:

I mean, a lot of loss of life, a lot of loss of property.

Marvin Cash:

You know, from an economic perspective, so much of the economy in that part of the world is tourism driven.

Marvin Cash:

You know, it's going to be a really, really tough road for, you know, to get back.

Marvin Cash:

But, you know, as we were talking about before, you know, the fly fishing community is responding positively.

Marvin Cash:

We just have to remember, folks, that this isn't going to be done by Halloween or Thanksgiving or Christmas or New Year's.

Marvin Cash:

We're going to be working on this for years to come.

Dustin White:

Exactly.

Dustin White:

Yeah.

Dustin White:

I mean, yeah, I just echo the same sentiment.

Dustin White:

You said.

Dustin White:

We have so much, so much extensions in the relationships.

Dustin White:

We have friends, family, co workers, peers, colleagues that are deeply affected by this, and we ache with them and we hurt with them and just the devastation that's there.

Dustin White:

But the encouragement in this really, really difficult time is that we've seen a response of just, you know, the best part of humanity coming together in supporting each other and donating and reaching out and, you know, giving ourselves to, you know, our friends, our loved ones, even strangers, you know, in need to see each other through.

Dustin White:

And that's been.

Dustin White:

It's been great.

Dustin White:

So, yeah, you know, we'll get through this.

Dustin White:

You know, I saw, I think it was Hendersonville Outfitters said, you know, like trout, we will rise.

Dustin White:

Um, it just takes all of us together to do so.

Dustin White:

And, and, and we are, um.

Dustin White:

So, yeah, it's, uh, it's, it's.

Dustin White:

It's tough to be, you know, here in central Wyoming and, you know, uh, the environment is, you know, relatively pleasant.

Dustin White:

Um, but, you know, we're, we're cognizant of.

Dustin White:

Of everyone, you know, back east that that's going through it.

Dustin White:

But, you know, we're here with you and we're supporting you and we're here for however we can continue to support you in recovering through everything.

Marvin Cash:

Yeah.

Marvin Cash:

And I would say, folks, if you're listening to this and you want to, you know, have some options to donate and kind of support the recovery effort, I will drop a link in the show notes.

Marvin Cash:

I put out a blog post last week with some suggestions for each of those three parts of the country.

Marvin Cash:

And I, um, various flavors.

Marvin Cash:

And you can even direct the money to specific counties if, if that's, uh, something that you want to do.

Marvin Cash:

And, you know, dustin shifting gears a little bit, uh, you're kind of in the official fall cool off in central Wyoming.

Marvin Cash:

What are you seeing on the water?

Dustin White:

Yeah, yeah.

Dustin White:

Um, particular dry fly action.

Dustin White:

Um, we've had, you know, trichos and, you know, betis in the morning has been really, really good.

Dustin White:

Um, we are very, very, very clear on water clarity.

Dustin White:

So once that sun gets up, you know, you do hit a little bit of a dry spell for folks that are wanting to either throw dries or strip streamers in the middle of the day.

Dustin White:

Um, so, you know, midday, um, beta still is, is our best option.

Dustin White:

You know, we do have, um, fish still willing to take some, you know, stone fly patterns, um, you know, in, in cattus in the middle of the day, crane fly, you know, some, some large stuff.

Dustin White:

But I.

Dustin White:

That's going to be, you know, definitely drifted under either, um, some sort of dropper or um, a bobber.

Dustin White:

Uh, but then as the evening starts to roll around, uh, the caddis hatch becomes, you know, pretty prolific.

Dustin White:

And, and so we're seeing a lot of fish will undertake, um, you know, larger caddis patterns on the surface.

Dustin White:

And I would say that's Marvin kind of across the board on all three systems, you know, both on, on the reef and, and lower on the mile and on the bighorn in terms of streamer patterns because we are pretty low and pretty clear for this time of year.

Dustin White:

Tan and natural definitely is the way to go there.

Dustin White:

So I would say, you know, full intermediate, even a floating line would do great.

Dustin White:

Just be cognizant.

Dustin White:

There's still some with the cooler unions that we have.

Dustin White:

We still have a lot of grass, a lot of moss breaking off from the bottom.

Dustin White:

So, you know, you're going to be, you know, cleaning your flies off, you know, throughout the, throughout the day.

Dustin White:

But the, the streamer fishing has been remarkably successful, especially early morning up to about that lunchtime hour.

Marvin Cash:

Got it.

Marvin Cash:

And, you know, since you're out at the lodge, you know, why don't we make that our restaurant, uh, for this episode?

Marvin Cash:

And, uh, yeah, why don't you let folks know kind of what it's like to be out and stay at the lodge as opposed to staying in town.

Dustin White:

Yeah.

Dustin White:

So we're so fortunate, so blessed here, uh, with, uh, crazy raven fly fishing, the ugly bug fly shop that, um, we've got three different, you know, lodging options for folks.

Dustin White:

We have our lodge, uh, which is right on the river, right next to our, uh, kind of rendezvous for most folks.

Dustin White:

Trips that come out, sleeps twelve folks, comfortably.

Dustin White:

Comes, you know, we have, you know, family style meals that are done just amazingly by Lori, who takes care of us.

Dustin White:

So that's everything from, you know, tenderloins to pheasant to filet to walleye.

Dustin White:

Locally sourced, you know, we've got a ton of just fantastic meals that, that we offer to folks, um, right here with, uh, private fishing access.

Dustin White:

If you want a little more of the intimate, uh, not necessarily rugged, but, um, you know, I want to be, you know, it's a fishing, fishing sort of trip just a little bit down the road.

Dustin White:

About a half mile down the road, we have our river cabin.

Dustin White:

Um, still comes with the same, uh, food accommodations, but comes with some of the best, uh, weight fishing options out on the river.

Dustin White:

Um, but if you have a larger group that want a little more amenities, we also have a river house as you get in the town, in the casper.

Dustin White:

So, um, kind of, you know, whether you're dealing for a larger group, more of the, uh, roughing it, uh, but with amenities, river options, uh, or, uh, being close to all the, the things that cn do here in Casper, uh, we've got a few different options for you that they're, all three of them are right on the river.

Dustin White:

Have exclusive private fishing access for you, but come with meals and all the amenities that you'd want with it.

Marvin Cash:

Yeah, and I would also say, too, that Lori makes a mean shore lunch.

Dustin White:

Oh, I mean, the best of the best.

Dustin White:

I mean, Laurie just does an incredible job, takes care of all of his fishing guys and clients incredibly well, and will definitely welcome you with that warm western hospitality that we've come to know and love very, very, very much here at the ugly bug and crazy rainbow.

Marvin Cash:

Yeah, the cookies are the bomb.

Dustin White:

Oh, yeah.

Dustin White:

And you never know what you're going to get every day.

Dustin White:

The cookie's different.

Dustin White:

The accoutrement is it keeps you on your toes, but it's always good.

Marvin Cash:

Yeah.

Marvin Cash:

Well, listen, before I let you go, you know, folks, one, tonight was your last shot to send in questions.

Marvin Cash:

And next time we're going to draw for the half day with Dustin.

Marvin Cash:

But Dustin, before I let you go, you want to let folks know where they can find you so they can get on your.

Marvin Cash:

Your guide calendar before you head back east and chase steelhead.

Dustin White:

Yeah, absolutely.

Dustin White:

You can find me.

Dustin White:

My instagram is white.

Dustin White:

-:

Marvin Cash:

Well, folks, as always, say yo to yourself to get out there and catch a few.

Marvin Cash:

Tight lines, everybody.

Marvin Cash:

Tight lines.

Marvin Cash:

Dustin.

Dustin White:

Tight lines.

Dustin White:

Marvin, thanks so much.
