Speaker:This here is your host gift biz gal Sue Mon height.
Speaker:Hi there.
Speaker:It's Sue and thank you for joining me on the gift
Speaker:biz on wrapped podcast.
Speaker:We're going to talk today about how to actually go through
Speaker:and get the most out of any online course that you
Speaker:purchase. Now,
Speaker:this is a sequel to the prior podcast episode number one
Speaker:46, where we talked about,
Speaker:should you even buy that online course?
Speaker:I went over the four steps that you should take to
Speaker:determine if the course is for you.
Speaker:Should you make the investment?
Speaker:And are you setting yourself up for getting the solution that
Speaker:the course offers,
Speaker:whether it's learning or something you're going to implement?
Speaker:Are you in a position where you're going to be able
Speaker:to take full advantage of that course?
Speaker:If you missed it,
Speaker:please go back and listen.
Speaker:It's the episode right before this number one 46.
Speaker:Should you purchase that online course?
Speaker:And today,
Speaker:now we're going to talk about how do you go through
Speaker:the course after someone purchases a course,
Speaker:there are four different things that can happen.
Speaker:Number one,
Speaker:someone never even starts the course.
Speaker:And you might say to me,
Speaker:Sue, that is crazy.
Speaker:Of course,
Speaker:why would I purchase a never start?
Speaker:You would be surprised at how many times this happens.
Speaker:People purchase their intention is to go through the course.
Speaker:They download it or they captured information and they never actually
Speaker:go through the course because they forget other things come up
Speaker:days, go by.
Speaker:And then all of a sudden it's forgotten.
Speaker:The second thing that can happen is they'll quit halfway through.
Speaker:They had full intention and motivation of getting started and they
Speaker:were so excited.
Speaker:They jumped in right away,
Speaker:but halfway through,
Speaker:for whatever reason,
Speaker:they had to take a break and they never got back
Speaker:to it.
Speaker:Again, the third thing that can happen is someone gets totally
Speaker:through the course,
Speaker:but then they never actually apply what they learned.
Speaker:They took all the notes,
Speaker:they thought about it.
Speaker:All. They knew it was something that they needed to do,
Speaker:but they never went any further and actually took the action
Speaker:to make it happen.
Speaker:In all three of these cases,
Speaker:it's really a waste of time and money.
Speaker:They invested in the course,
Speaker:but they never actually brought it full circle and took action
Speaker:to implement whatever it was.
Speaker:That was the result that they were looking for when they
Speaker:bought the course in the first place.
Speaker:You will note that I intentionally spoke in third person when
Speaker:I was describing these first three Results,
Speaker:because I am quite sure that this would never be you.
Speaker:Now, wouldn't the fourth thing that can happen when you take
Speaker:a course is that you actually go through the entire course,
Speaker:the entire program,
Speaker:and then you take action.
Speaker:You actually do something with the information that you've now learned,
Speaker:and this,
Speaker:my friends is what should happen.
Speaker:And this is what I want for you when you take
Speaker:online courses.
Speaker:So we're going to talk through today,
Speaker:my six steps to making sure that you're a doer and
Speaker:you get the very most out of any online course you
Speaker:purchase. These steps apply regardless of what the content of the
Speaker:course is,
Speaker:regardless of your industry,
Speaker:it's a structure and a way of moving through the course.
Speaker:So you set yourself up for success each and every time
Speaker:let's dive in,
Speaker:shall we to help you along?
Speaker:I've also made a download,
Speaker:which is the learning process checklist that supports these six steps.
Speaker:You can find that at gift biz,
Speaker:unwrapped.com forward slash one 47,
Speaker:this is a checklist that you'll be able to use for
Speaker:every single course that you take.
Speaker:It can be actually the first page of your notebook.
Speaker:If you're going to be writing things out,
Speaker:okay. Six steps to making sure that you are a doer
Speaker:and getting the most out of the course as you possibly
Speaker:can. Step number one is setting up when you purchase an
Speaker:online course,
Speaker:you immediately are going to get some emails.
Speaker:You'll get an invoice,
Speaker:you'll get access information so that you can actually attend the
Speaker:course, whether it's a webinar or whether there's an online site
Speaker:that you're going to need access to with a username and
Speaker:a password.
Speaker:There may also be some directions for you.
Speaker:It's best.
Speaker:If you put all of this in one place,
Speaker:and I have a couple of options for you,
Speaker:the first is just to make a folder on your desktop,
Speaker:start a blank folder with the course name,
Speaker:and then any time you get something,
Speaker:then move it over into that folder.
Speaker:A little bit easier I find is to just keep it
Speaker:right in your email provider service.
Speaker:If that's possible,
Speaker:I use Gmail and I'll use labels.
Speaker:I have a label that is all of my courses.
Speaker:And then I have sub folders under that with each courses
Speaker:name. So then it's super easy because then I can just
Speaker:click and drag any emails that I get that relate to
Speaker:the course over into that folder.
Speaker:So two options for you,
Speaker:but no matter what,
Speaker:somehow create a system for yourself to set up and just
Speaker:capture all of the information that you need in one place
Speaker:I suggested is to do this over and over the same
Speaker:way for any course that you take.
Speaker:So you'll always know exactly where to go when you want
Speaker:to re-look at a course or review a certain point.
Speaker:Again, you're not going to have to go back and waste
Speaker:time and be like,
Speaker:okay. Now,
Speaker:where is that?
Speaker:It'll all be in your course file folder.
Speaker:Step number two,
Speaker:determine your overall objective for taking the course in the first
Speaker:place. Many courses will enter into with one intent,
Speaker:but there'll be so much information that you learn that you
Speaker:kind of lose sight of the initial reason why you purchase
Speaker:the course.
Speaker:So before you even dive in,
Speaker:write down what your objective is,
Speaker:what you're trying to accomplish and be able to no use
Speaker:or do,
Speaker:when you're done with the course,
Speaker:this is going to help you because as you go through,
Speaker:you'll be focusing and consciously looking for the place where that
Speaker:information, that objective is being fulfilled.
Speaker:You're going to find a lot of other things,
Speaker:you know,
Speaker:a lot of ancillary pieces of information that are going to
Speaker:be useful,
Speaker:but you want to make sure that you get out exactly
Speaker:what your intent was when you press the button and you
Speaker:purchase the course.
Speaker:So that's step two,
Speaker:understanding your objective,
Speaker:very concretely in terms of what you're trying to get out
Speaker:of the course.
Speaker:Step number three,
Speaker:schedule time in your calendar for a couple of things.
Speaker:First, to get all your materials set up,
Speaker:you made by a course in the middle of the day,
Speaker:and you're not actually going to be able to get started
Speaker:on it till later.
Speaker:That's fine,
Speaker:but schedule some time,
Speaker:maybe it's later that night,
Speaker:maybe it's over the weekend,
Speaker:not to dive in,
Speaker:to start taking the course,
Speaker:but to get all of your materials set up,
Speaker:perhaps there's downloads that you're going to want to get ready.
Speaker:You definitely want to download and print the checklist that I
Speaker:just talked about at gift biz,
Speaker:unwrapped.com forward slash one 47.
Speaker:That can be your first page.
Speaker:If you like,
Speaker:and just get everything set up.
Speaker:I like to actually have individual notebooks for every course I
Speaker:take. So that then everything is in one place.
Speaker:In addition to the file folders on my computer,
Speaker:it's also all my handwritten notes.
Speaker:Any downloads are also all in one place.
Speaker:Then you also want to schedule time in your calendar to
Speaker:actually take the course.
Speaker:And you want this to be uninterrupted time where you're going
Speaker:to be able to just be 100% focused on the course.
Speaker:So yes,
Speaker:that means no phone,
Speaker:no Facebook,
Speaker:none of that.
Speaker:You really want to focus because there are a lot of
Speaker:nuances that come up in a course that are really good
Speaker:information for you.
Speaker:And you just don't know what's going to come.
Speaker:If, if you're not fully focused,
Speaker:you could miss something very important.
Speaker:Okay? So you are now set up,
Speaker:you've got your file folders.
Speaker:That was number one.
Speaker:You've created your objective.
Speaker:So you are very clear with your intent of why you're
Speaker:taking this course.
Speaker:And you've scheduled time in your calendar.
Speaker:Notice we're already halfway through these steps before you're actually going
Speaker:to start taking the course before we get into the chorus,
Speaker:let's hear from our sponsor.
Speaker:This podcast is made possible.
Speaker:Thanks to the support of the ribbon print company,
Speaker:create custom ribbons right in your store or craft studio in
Speaker:seconds. Visit the ribbon print company.com
Speaker:for more information.
Speaker:Now it's time to dive into the course.
Speaker:Step number four,
Speaker:start the course.
Speaker:Now I know there's temptation to look at a course and
Speaker:just say,
Speaker:Oh, you know what?
Speaker:I don't need to go through these first modules because I
Speaker:already know this.
Speaker:I'm going to jump to module four because that's what I
Speaker:really need to learn.
Speaker:I'm going to suggest that you resist that urge to start
Speaker:in the middle.
Speaker:When somebody creates a course,
Speaker:they start at the beginning and they build on top of
Speaker:each module,
Speaker:starting in the middle.
Speaker:You never know what you might have missed along the way.
Speaker:So even if there's a lot that you already know,
Speaker:you really don't feel like the beginning parts of the course
Speaker:are necessary for you.
Speaker:They're a little bit basic.
Speaker:Still go through them.
Speaker:Maybe you don't have to take as many notes,
Speaker:but you never know again what you're missing and you never
Speaker:know what the instructor is going to reference later that you
Speaker:don't know what they're talking about because you never listened to
Speaker:it. So start at the beginning and go through module by
Speaker:module. Step-by-step however it's structured because that's going to give you
Speaker:the full value of the course.
Speaker:We talk about this a lot in my online training course
Speaker:called gift biz builder.
Speaker:When somebody joins the program,
Speaker:they are offered a 15 minute one-on-one call with me.
Speaker:And we talk specifically about their situation and how to approach
Speaker:the entire course.
Speaker:And I get it.
Speaker:It's human nature.
Speaker:People want to go automatically to what they're needing,
Speaker:building a website,
Speaker:understanding social media,
Speaker:et cetera.
Speaker:The course overall teaches people how to start and grow a
Speaker:business from their hobby or their craft.
Speaker:And if someone is brand new,
Speaker:yes, of course,
Speaker:they're going to start from the very beginning.
Speaker:But a lot of people who join us are struggling or
Speaker:they have something that they are specifically wanting to learn again,
Speaker:what is your objective for coming into a course,
Speaker:right? And the tendency is to go directly to that module.
Speaker:So what I always tell people is go back when you
Speaker:can. I get,
Speaker:you know,
Speaker:I get it.
Speaker:I can't control everybody.
Speaker:You're going to go to the module you want,
Speaker:but then do go back and take it from the top
Speaker:because you never know what you might've missed in building the
Speaker:foundation to your business.
Speaker:It's the same approach for any course.
Speaker:So no matter what,
Speaker:at some point in time,
Speaker:take it from the top.
Speaker:You paid for it.
Speaker:You might as well go through each and every portion of
Speaker:the course,
Speaker:moving on to step number five,
Speaker:participate in an access,
Speaker:all bonuses that are provided with the course,
Speaker:many courses have downloadable worksheets PDFs.
Speaker:A lot of them also have the actual deck that the
Speaker:presenter has gone through so that you can print it out
Speaker:and reference it later.
Speaker:Anything that the creator has provided.
Speaker:I suggest you go ahead and capture.
Speaker:You can put it in your online folder.
Speaker:You can print it out and put it in your physical
Speaker:folder. Whatever is easiest for you,
Speaker:and is the best way for you to learn.
Speaker:Additionally, many courses come with Facebook groups,
Speaker:communities that are created with people who are also taking a
Speaker:course alongside you,
Speaker:or they've taken the course in prior years.
Speaker:This quite honestly,
Speaker:but can become the most valuable part of any course you
Speaker:take because you're able to interact with people who are in
Speaker:the same spot as you looking for a similar result as
Speaker:you are.
Speaker:And you're able to go back and forth and have conversations
Speaker:about the content of the course.
Speaker:Additionally, the instructor is probably going to be inside that Facebook
Speaker:group and can answer questions and bring some of the conversation
Speaker:to a deeper level than even what's already presented in the
Speaker:course. The other thing about these communities is you can find
Speaker:and build relationships that are going to take you further.
Speaker:Even after you're all done with the course,
Speaker:you're going to find people that just generally you resonate with
Speaker:and you can become accountability partners with them,
Speaker:not just for the course,
Speaker:but for the future of your business,
Speaker:as well,
Speaker:many people will stay in courses or membership sites specifically because
Speaker:of the community,
Speaker:the people that they're meeting and the interaction there that is
Speaker:part of the value of what you've just purchased.
Speaker:So if there is a community,
Speaker:you absolutely want to go in a little piece of advice.
Speaker:There is right.
Speaker:When you get in,
Speaker:introduce yourself,
Speaker:say who you are,
Speaker:what you do while you're taking the course.
Speaker:And you'll see that people will welcome you in and you
Speaker:can start developing relationships right away.
Speaker:All right,
Speaker:we are circling down to the final point and that is
Speaker:step number six,
Speaker:which is,
Speaker:can anybody guess it?
Speaker:I bet you can take action.
Speaker:You want to make sure that you're going to implement into
Speaker:your business.
Speaker:What you've just learned,
Speaker:you know,
Speaker:is a great thing,
Speaker:but it sits on a shelf like it sits in the
Speaker:library on a shelf to collect dust.
Speaker:If you don't actually take that information and then do something
Speaker:with it,
Speaker:this is also where the community comes in because you can
Speaker:have accountability partners or learn how other people are implementing the
Speaker:information that can provide you with valuable ideas of how you
Speaker:can do it for yourself as well.
Speaker:All right,
Speaker:there, you have it in summary,
Speaker:let's go through these six steps.
Speaker:One more time.
Speaker:Step number one,
Speaker:setting up your course in a file folder where you're going
Speaker:to be able to resource it.
Speaker:Anytime you want.
Speaker:Number two,
Speaker:setting a clear objective or a goal as to why you're
Speaker:going through the course.
Speaker:Step number three,
Speaker:schedule time in your calendar to set up and get all
Speaker:your materials prepared.
Speaker:And then to set up the time to actually go through
Speaker:the course,
Speaker:step number four,
Speaker:take it from the top,
Speaker:start at the beginning and make sure to go through each
Speaker:and every module.
Speaker:Step number five,
Speaker:participate and access all bonuses and step number six,
Speaker:probably the most important step of all take action.
Speaker:Take what you've learned and then figure out a plan to
Speaker:apply it to your business.
Speaker:The download information again for the learning process checklist is gift
Speaker:biz on wrapped.com
Speaker:forward slash one 47,
Speaker:because this is the hundred and 47th episode.
Speaker:See how that works.
Speaker:Nice and easy.
Speaker:Remember that this is part of a two-part series.
Speaker:The very first thing you do when you're thinking about online
Speaker:courses is to determine if it's really a course that you
Speaker:should be taking.
Speaker:And that was all covered on episode one 46.
Speaker:I'd love for you to go back and check that out
Speaker:if you haven't done so already.
Speaker:And then this episode on how to actually go through the
Speaker:course so that you've made an investment,
Speaker:that's actually going to produce a result for you.
Speaker:Thank you for joining me here today.
Speaker:And I just had an idea.
Speaker:If there are some online courses that you have taken,
Speaker:that you would recommend to other people put it in the
