Today in health, it it's Friday. And as you know, on Fridays, I like to just explore some different topics. So today, We're going to explore the metaverse. My name is bill Russell. I'm a former CIO for a 16 hospital system. And creator this week health, a set of channels, dedicated to keeping health it staff current and engaged.

And if you've listened to the show for any period of time, you know, that I like to collect these decks. I collect this deck. The Deloitte will put out a deck. , there's a couple other organizations that'll that will put them out throughout the year. That are specific to healthcare . I collect all those decks and I look at the various trends that they see coming. And I look for where they overlap.
, seeing the same trends or where they diverge in terms of how those trends are going to be applied. And that helps to inform how I'm going to lead the organization. That I'm a part of. Right. So they are looking to me to be ahead of the curve with where to technology. These firms are paid to be ahead of the curve with regards to technology and they take the time to put together these decks. I think this one's.
I don't know it's about. 30 pages or so. And, , it's pretty interesting. So meet me in the metaverse, how the continuum of technology and experience is reshaping healthcare. And so there's a handful of things in here. It starts a page three 97% of healthcare executives believe that the continuous advances in technology.
Are becoming more reliable than economic, political and social trends and informing their organization's long-term strategy. In other words, the economy can , go up and down. The political environment can go up and down. Social trends will go up and down. But at the end of the day, the thing that's remaining constant.a four technology trends for:
So the first technology trend is web me. And this is essentially my presence in the metaverse. Right? So there's two distinct layers to this. There's the experience layer. And then there's this distributed data layer. I'll go into that in a minute. The next thing is the programmable world. And initially I thought this was about programming the virtual world, but this is about personalizing every aspect of the physical and virtual world.
And so as we look at this, we look at the convergence of 5g IOT, smart materials. , ambient computing and AR augmented reality. You see all those things coming together. To hyper-personalized the world that we live in. And think about the movies that you've seen, where they essentially walk up to something with their phone. And not only are they seeing the rows of things that they're going to buy, but they actually see things through, , augmented reality on their phone.
, the amount of information that's coming in from IOT is now going to be aggregated and, , utilized to hyper-personalized every experience you have in the physical world. So that's what that's about. The next is the unreal, and this is an interesting one and really what this is about.
Is the fact that we are starting to create a lot of synthetic data and we have to be able to discern between the real and the unreal in this world. We have to be able to understand what is AI created data, what is actual data about an event? And what's the difference between AI created data and actual data.
And then we have to look at. Really authenticating people. Right? So authenticating the data where it comes from authenticating, the people that are using that data. And, , authenticity is the, , the cornerstone of, of the future frameworks around this technology. And then finally you have computing the impossible and what that's about as we're getting pretty close to the quantum computing phase. And if not, we are doing just amazing things with the amount of data we have and the amount of compute power that we're bringing to bear on these things.
Right. And so when you look at these, these four things, I'm going to go back in a little more detail on each, but, , have you looked at these four things, how they're coming together? We'll inform what the world looks like over the next five years. Right? So if the metaverse actually becomes a place.
And we need to establish a presence, either a presence for our company or health system or a presence for us as individuals in that metaverse the, , then we're going to need a strong, , technical foundation for establishing that not only a technical foundation, but an experience framework that we want to enable for our people from one end to the other, from the difficult.
From the digital to the physical, , to, to the metaverse right. Single experience across all those things. , we're going to have to be looking at how we aggregate that data. To create those experiences. And, , and you know, Be honest with you. I think we have to be intentional on that, , on, on what we want to create the digital core.
Has, you know, a lot of different aspects to it for enabling that. But at the end of the day, we need to be intentional about what we're trying to create and then collect the right data for that. Create the right authentic. Authentication and authenticity. , for those experiences and the data that we're using and then, , create experiences that just delight people, right? That's the age old thing that we're trying to get to. So let's go back to web me your presence in the metaverse. And specifically, when we talk about the experience layer and there's distributed data layer.
The concept here is that the data is going to follow you wherever you go. The data is going to follow you. You can be in the physical world, in the digital world, in the metaverse you could be anywhere. , but at the end of the day, your data follows you from one experience to the next experience.
The experience layer itself. And, you know, we talked about platforms and those kinds of things. I'm sure that we will build a, an experience layer on the platform. But when you think about the experience layer, it has to have a couple of components. It has to know me. Right. So it has to know different aspects about me. It has to be able to personalize around those aspects. And so you have the medical data in the healthcare world, but you also have all sorts of consumer data in other aspects of the world. And you have, , you know, things that I read, things that I, , consume.
, digitally on, on, , screens you have, , I don't know, personal data, all that stuff's coming together. To inform the kind of experience I want. And so me as a patient, I may not want to be treated as a patient per se. And that's how we look at it. There are patients, and then there are consumers who are outside the patient realm at this moment in time.
At the end of the day, we should be able to get to an N of one. Right? So that's, , Peter Teal's book. , and of one is about the fact that we need to customize down to the individual level. And that is what web me is all about and think about it from this perspective. If we believe that our biomarkers and our DNA.
Are going to be able to inform the kinds of medications we take and the kind of things that are going to provide the best care for us that should be included into our care platform moving forward. And we should be able to get down to very specific. , care regiments around that. And so that is one of the ways you think through this technology, you think through these kinds of presentations and you go, okay, how.
What does it look like to create better experiences across that platform? And to keep that data moving with the patient, with the individual, wherever they happen to show up, we're still not really good at that. We need to get really, really good at that. And my, my personal preference is that the patient becomes the locus of the data.
Right because the patient is always there wherever they're going, even within your health system, if you could figure out a way to keep the data with them, and then they present the data. Wherever they go. And then they collect the data from whatever the event is. I think that is going to be the most sustainable model moving forward for, , for data in this physical, digital transition transition that goes on.
, let's see programmable world. , again, on the programmable world stuff, I would just go into understanding the foundational technologies, but before you start going, hog-wild on IOT devices and ambient computing and augmented reality, and those kinds of things. , listen to your patients, listen to your consumers, listen to your clinicians.
What are you trying to create? How does it help the system move forward and understand the environment you're in understand the strategy for your health system. Don't just look at it and say, Hey, we can do this. , it's not a matter of what you can do. You're going to be able to do a lot of different things. The question is what's right, for your clinicians, for your system.
And for your patients and that's what you need to do. To determine before you go hog wild. And then when you're putting this stuff together and you're selecting those technologies. Think begin with the end in mind, what are you going to deliver? What does that look like? And do some testing, make sure that that's what people want.
The, , the thing about the unreal I found interesting was just the use of technologies that we have come to jettison from our vernacular. And that is things like blockchain.
In order to get that kind of guarantee that the data that you're dealing with is authentic. Things like blockchain come back into play. Now I understand why we've jettisoned them. , from a overall standpoint, it's not going to replace the EHR and that kind of stuff, but it can be used as an underlying technology to authenticate the data
and make sure that the source of the data is the source that we believe it is. That the data is of the quality that we believe it is. And it's, it's really about providing that, that layer of what they're calling authenticity. So, you know, how, how should health systems.
So I'll close out with this. This is the way I stay ahead of the curves. I collect these. Decks from people that are really looking to stay ahead of the curve. Right? So you have Accenture, you have, , Deloitte, you have, , the big firms. You have the McKinseys of the world. That are out there. You have some healthcare specific organizations that are out there as well.
That are looking to establish, Hey, here's what we see coming. , you take those, you lay them in against what you're currently doing within your health system. You're laying them against the strategies that you are currently trying to implement within your health system. And a lot of times, that's what I do. I look at the strategies that we have, and then I look at what they're saying are the trends. And then I try to just dream and imagine.
What is possible. You know, what could we be doing with the technologies that are coming down the pike? What could we do in the program? Will world, what could we do in the web MI era? What can we do around authenticating the users data from one end of the experience to the other, and how can we leverage the incredible computing power?
That is available to us today. And, , once I do that, then I'm ready to go out and have conversations with people within the organization to explore concepts and to just throw things out. And to brainstorm a little bit. About what is the potential of all these really cool technologies? In the real world. So that's how I think about it. That's why I love these decks.
