The Princess Diaries is a classic for many reasons, but one of the most popular is the fact that it features a female protagonist. This was revolutionary in 2001 when the book series was released and people were finally able to see themselves as strong protagonists on screen. The film adaptation followed suit with Anne Hathaway starring as Mia Thermopolis, and had an immense influence on future films like Frozen, The Hunger Games, and even Batman.
In an interview during a memorial for Gary Marshall, Anne Hathaway said that one of her favorite experiences on the set of the film was when Julie Andrews would flub a line and then start swearing. Julie Andrews denies that she swore on the set of this movie, but regardless, it's a funny anecdote for the cast and crew of this movie.
The Princess Diaries Movie was based off of a book series written by Meg Cabot. There are 11 books in the episode and they actually included much more diversity than the Disney Film. We talk about some of the other differences from the books. Disney really found a gem of a title when they came up with "Shut up and listen" in the books its called, "Lily tells it like it is"
We have a purely speculative talk about ways that we could reboot the film franchise and spin it off into a Disney Plus series starring a much more diverse cast of young actors. Do we do a Continuation? A Reboot? A Reunion Show or a spin off? Maybe we can do them all!
If you had fun having this discussion with us please share this episode with any other Princess Diaries Fans that you know.
This is fandom.
Branden:I am Brandon.
Branden:Okay.
Nik:And I'm Nick English.
Tayler:And I'm Taylor Iverson.
Branden:All right, guys.
Branden:We are in the middle of our princess diaries arc.
Branden:If you have not listened to our last episode on the princess diaries,
Branden:you need to go listen to that.
Branden:We had some great discussion there.
Tayler:What are you doing with your lives?
Tayler:If not learning more about the princess diaries.
Branden:If you found this episode, you should very easily
Branden:be able to find the other one.
Branden:This is our episode that we talk about the history.
Branden:Behind the fandoms, the real life history.
Branden:How the movie was made and what inspired it and what what inspired.
Branden:So if you look at the early two thousands, there were a lot of
Branden:movies, like the princess diaries.
Branden:Mean girls movies like that really began to gain a lot of notoriety.
Branden:They took their leads from movies earlier, like clueless and legally blonde.
Branden:They were all different, but there was a lot of connections between them.
Branden:So last episode, we talked about how the princess diaries is about
Branden:a girl who learns that she is the heir to her country, and she has
Branden:no idea how it's going to affect everything in her life and Hathaway who
Branden:starred as the lead Mia Thermopolis.
Branden:This has directly led to her being able to star in sure movies, like the
Branden:dark Knight returns, Les Miserables.
Branden:Liz.
Branden:Did I say that right?
Branden:Lay Miz.
Branden:Let's just say Les Miz and interstellar.
Nik:She was
Nik:Also the grand high witch in the witches remake
Tayler:she was in ocean's eight.
Branden:So princess diaries directly had an effect on and
Branden:Hathaway, which led to this career.
Branden:So without princess diaries, we wouldn't be having these other movies.
Tayler:So say thank you guys.
Tayler:Thank you.
Tayler:Thank you, Gary
Nik:I'm sure that they would have just cast someone else.
Tayler:And it wouldn't have been good.
Branden:okay.
Branden:That's a good question.
Branden:Who would you have cast?
Branden:Like maybe not any time in history, you don't have to lock it into that time
Branden:period, but who would you have cast that would have made it better or worse?
Nik:Oh, you know what?
Nik:I can just cookie cutter in any Disney star.
Nik:You could put in, Miley Cyrus before she went nuts.
Nik:You could put in a what's Hannah Mon Hannah Montana.
Nik:That's
Tayler:That is my least, sorry.
Tayler:I'm also going to challenge your Miley Cyrus went nuts.
Tayler:I don't think that's fair.
Nik:No.
Nik:I mean she, before she broke away from her Disney persona and found her true self.
Nik:How
Nik:about that?
Tayler:Thank you, Nicholas.
Tayler:Put some respect on Miley's name,
Nik:that, that's the one I was thinking of.
Nik:You put Hillary deaf in here and that would have worked.
Tayler:Hilary
Tayler:Duff was too busy doing a Cinderella story, which is also
Tayler:a movie we, one day we'll talk
Nik:seeing it's the same show.
Nik:It's the same idea, right?
Tayler:but a Cinderella story has Jennifer Coolidge.
Nik:And also just Chad Michael Murray,
Tayler:My heart.
Branden:All right.
Branden:that was probably an unfair question to ask you.
Nik:There's a lot of young, aspiring actresses that could
Nik:have been put into this role.
Nik:Now, Anne Hathaway was fabulous and so it's fine.
Nik:And I liked the casting and I love that.
Nik:Anne, Hathaway's a part of my life, so I'm not being mad about it, but like
Tayler:What if we did, we had Zendaya
Branden:Ooh.
Branden:That would have been really cool.
Tayler:or I'm thinking beanie Feldstein from
Nik:Yeah.
Nik:Yes.
Nik:You made me watch lady bird at my house
Tayler:You're welcome.
Branden:I know Taylor, that one of your favorite movies of all time is mean girls.
Branden:And would you believe it if I told you that the princess diaries had
Branden:a direct impact on mean girls?
Tayler:Yes.
Tayler:So remind me, Prince of stars came out in 2001.
Tayler:Is that right?
Tayler:And
Tayler:mean girls 2004.
Branden:Correct.
Branden:So the reason that mean girls was able to be green-lit by the studio was because
Branden:they had examples of recent stories that featured teenage girl protagonists.
Branden:Vis-a-vis the princess diaries.
Branden:Here's the mean girls, or you could probably.
Branden:Do a better synopsis than me on this, but so the film follows outsider's
Branden:perspective entering high school for the first time after being homeschooled.
Branden:And it deals heavily into themes like bullying, clicks popularity,
Branden:contests, female friendships.
Branden:This seems very familiar to the things that we've been talking
Branden:about with the princess diaries.
Branden:So the fact that the princess diaries was the box office success
Branden:led to mean girls.
Branden:People are arguing that we need more of these films and you can see how as time
Branden:has moved on the market has proven that.
Branden:Teenage female protagonists movies are successful and that has led into
Branden:some of these more serious movies.
Branden:And I would bet you that this leads to more action movies being helmed by women.
Branden:And it takes time.
Branden:Hollywood turns like it's a big diesel truck.
Nik:honestly, how long has it been for a black widow movie
Nik:And even wonder woman?
Nik:Like how long did it take to get that movie,
Nik:too freaking long
Branden:those movies came on the heels of movies, like hunger games and
Branden:divergent, which are teenage led female
Branden:action movies.
Tayler:And also based on
Tayler:books,
Branden:We're going to start seeing a lot more of these movies.
Branden:You've got movies, like wonder woman.
Branden:Ocean's eight black widow.
Branden:They're coming out.
Branden:As, in my opinion, a direct result of movies.
Branden:Like the princess diaries, not just solely the princess
Branden:diaries, but movies like them.
Branden:They it's a snowball.
Tayler:you telling me women and girls make compelling characters.
Branden:compelling characters and surprisingly people want to go, we'll
Branden:pay money to see that, like who knew.
Tayler:notion
Branden:Yeah.
Branden:All right.
Branden:So I we've talked about the warm, fuzzy things.
Branden:Now I need to share something that I think is.
Branden:Is the dark underbelly of the princess diaries.
Tayler:is why I came here, was to learn about the dark underbelly.
Branden:After Gary Marshall passed away ABC air to attribute to him and
Branden:in it, they interviewed Anne Hathaway.
Branden:And she said that my favorite memory of working with Julie Andrews.
Branden:And I think the best memory is whenever she would curse.
Branden:It was delightful.
Branden:I would feel terrible, but I would pray for her to flub her lines.
Tayler:This brings me so much joy.
Tayler:What I would give to hear Julie, Andrew say shit.
Nik:I'm pretty sure that it's pretty easy to go find.
Nik:You just got to watch a lot of interviews with her.
Nik:Cause she, She, she does not.
Nik:You got to, if you remember, she grew up, grew up, that's funny, but like
Nik:her career was in the theater premiere.
Nik:She was in the theater and that the theater is not known for its.
Nik:Censorship.
Nik:Yeah.
Branden:So Julie Andrews disputes, this though she disputes it.
Nik:She, might've done it at the time, but I have seen
Nik:recent interviews with her,
Tayler:Yeah.
Tayler:There's like recent interviews of her being like F Anne Hathaway.
Tayler:And these lies she's spreading about
Nik:No, but she just talks about, she just talks about how, like she had
Nik:to put on a persona for so long that now that she's getting older, she's
Nik:like F it like literally she says stuff like that in interviews now.
Nik:And it was specifically because she was talking about doing voiceover work
Nik:for bridge Martin, because she was like, it's been so nice because my.
Nik:My daughter set up the studio for me, and I can just go into my
Nik:closet and read these things and be like, blah, blah, blah, blah.
Nik:And I can swear and do all the stuff between takes and nobody
Nik:cares about what I'm saying.
Nik:And I was like, yay.
Nik:She's finally finding her true self, which is what we want to do
Nik:the it, and she's just getting so old that she's just I don't have to
Nik:maintain this persona anymore.
Branden:this is what Julie, Andrew said.
Branden:She says, it depends what cursing you mean?
Branden:So right there she's qualifying it.
Branden:So we know there's something
Nik:Oh, she is a pro.
Nik:She is a PR pro
Branden:When did I do that?
Branden:I'm sorry, but I'm out to lunch on swearing, so like she said, so
Branden:she clarified that saying that.
Branden:Oh no.
Branden:I've sworn on set before, just not on the set of princess diaries.
Branden:So she's saying Anne Hathaway is just wrong about this one, because she
Branden:specifically shared a story about when she was working on Mary Poppins and they had
Branden:her all wired up so that she could fly.
Branden:And one of the stage managers who was in charge of the wires dropped them.
Branden:So she was dropped and she fell and she hit the ground.
Branden:And she's, this is her quote.
Branden:She says, I have to admit, I let fly a stream of colorful expletives.
Nik:So you're basically showing me right now, is that the scene with
Nik:the car crash and the trolley is just her that she can just spin it
Nik:and make everyone feel delightful after she has dropped the F bomb.
Nik:Okay.
Branden:She would anoint you to be order of the Rose, sir.
Branden:Nicholas
Nik:I would literally be one of those guys.
Nik:It's just yes, this is everything I've ever wanted.
Nik:I want to be knighted by a queen.
Nik:Yes,
Tayler:please meet with the emergency brake.
Tayler:Did you love a, that those two showed up at the dinner
Nik:yes.
Tayler:that?
Nik:like waves at him and they're like, hi,
Branden:but yeah, but in all seriousness though, Anne Hathaway, said that one
Branden:of the actresses who taught her how to act was Julie Andrews watching her and
Branden:Mary Poppins in the sound of music.
Branden:So Anne Hathaway was like, had a chance to work with a star, right?
Branden:She was trying to model for acting off of
Branden:Julie Andrews.
Branden:And so the fact that she was then able to work with Julie Andrews in her first role?
Nik:that's cool.
Nik:Anne Hathaway is a great actress
Tayler:gets mad at me for swearing.
Tayler:I'm going to tell her that Julie, Andrew swears
Branden:like big, like she's got a trucker's mouth,
Branden:apparently, according to Nick
Nik:You need to go watch these.
Nik:I think it was Colby where and it was just within the last year,
Nik:because it was during the COVID pandemic that the interview was.
Nik:And he was specifically talking to her about her voiceover work for
Nik:bridge Burton because Bridger 10 had just come out on Netflix and it was
Nik:this, sensation right off the bat.
Nik:And yeah, now that I'm thinking about it is Cole bears.
Nik:I'm sure you can find it on his YouTube channel.
Tayler:What I'm learning new about you is that we're going to
Tayler:need to talk about bridge written.
Nik:okay.
Nik:I'm going to tell, I'll tell you a short story about certain
Nik:Lena Lena started watching it.
Nik:She said, Nick, you're going to like this show.
Nik:And then she would stay up until two, three, four o'clock
Nik:in the morning to watch it.
Nik:And she's I just couldn't stop.
Nik:I just couldn't stop.
Nik:I just wanted to watch it.
Nik:And so I said, okay, I'm going to watch the show.
Nik:Started it on Friday, finished it on Sunday, the entire weekend.
Nik:No, finished it on Saturday.
Nik:It was almost like one day that I watched the entire series and
Nik:Lena was just like, that's fine.
Nik:Go ahead.
Nik:I would just come in and be like, legitimately the Duke.
Nik:And she'd be like, I know.
Nik:And I'm like the tension I'm like Julie Andrews tension,
Branden:Okay.
Branden:So
Branden:this movie, these movies that we have are actually based off of
Branden:a book, they were written, the books were written by Meg Cabot.
Branden:And not just a book, but an entire book series.
Branden:So the books have a lot of pop culture references, singers, movies, modern
Branden:fads, and culture and things like that.
Branden:But on Meg, Cabot's website.
Branden:She says I was inspired to write the princess diaries when my mom.
Branden:After the death of my father began dating one of my teachers.
Branden:And later went on to get married just as me as mom does in the book.
Branden:I've always had a thing for princesses.
Branden:And my parents used to joke that when I was smaller, I did a lot of insisting
Branden:that my real parents, the King and queen were going to come and get me soon.
Branden:And that everyone had better start being a lot nicer to me.
Branden:So I stuck a princess in the book just for kicks and wallah,
Branden:princess diaries was born.
Branden:So that was the inspiration about, this was the girl who believed
Branden:way before the media made sure that everybody was the chosen one.
Branden:Call back the last episode, she believed that she actually was a princess,
Branden:out of curiosity, how many books would you guess are in the series?
Tayler:Oh, I know there were a ton because I had the book series
Tayler:or at least I had some of them.
Tayler:I know I had, yeah.
Tayler:I want to say 12, eight,
Tayler:and I'm gonna go with eight
Nik:11.
Branden:the latest book in the series came out in 2015.
Nik:I might have a little insider information because I
Nik:did actually read the first book
Nik:in preparation in the preparation of this podcast.
Nik:I read the book.
Branden:how did this not come out last episode?
Tayler:Also, how did you have time to read a book?
Nik:Audio books are a lot easier for me to do than to sit down and watch a show.
Tayler:Nick?
Tayler:I've never been more proud of you than I am in this moment that
Tayler:you read the princess diaries
Nik:few things.
Nik:Okay.
Nik:A lot more diversity in the book.
Nik:They're not in San Francisco, they're in New York
Nik:her is not dead and all, she has a lot more friends and
Nik:they're all racially diverse.
Nik:They easily could have just taken it and solved a lot of issues
Nik:that Disney decided to take out.
Nik:Yeah.
Nik:Those are
Tayler:Is Joe still in the book?
Nik:Yeah, I think so.
Branden:Oh, okay.
Branden:So the book, the books are still about her grandmother.
Branden:Basically
Nik:Yeah.
Nik:Yeah.
Nik:Yeah.
Nik:It's very much the same thing and I listened to it on super speed too.
Nik:So like retention wasn't as great as it probably could have been
Nik:Walter, doing other things, but,
Nik:Lily is different because there's more than one friend,
Nik:so there's a whole lot more friends in the books.
Nik:But I'm trying to, I'm trying to piece it all together now
Nik:because now I'm put on the spot.
Nik:I shouldn't have revealed it because I was like, I didn't retain that much about it,
Tayler:We'll leave it to Disney to say, kill a parent.
Tayler:If we're going to make this into a movie.
Branden:That's the thing.
Branden:Disney has to kill the parent because it's an easy plot device to
Nik:And there was a whole lot more like.
Nik:Instead of it just skimming through, obviously the book can get into
Nik:a whole lot more like nuance of like, why things are happening.
Nik:There's a whole lot more that happens when she's no I actually want to become the
Nik:princess instead of just like a single conversation from a bad friend there's
Nik:a whole lot more depth to it and stuff.
Nik:So it makes a whole lot more sense.
Nik:And like in the book she has to call the queen.
Nik:Like Gran me RJ or something like that.
Nik:It's this like title, like the school title the whole time, instead
Nik:of just calling her queen, like
Nik:the queen.
Nik:Yeah.
Nik:It's
Nik:like it's Grammy RJ or something like that.
Nik:Yeah, so the book was a lot better.
Branden:the book was better than the movie?
Branden:controversial stand is to say
Nik:really weird.
Nik:There's only one instance and I've documented it really a lot where
Nik:I think the movie is better than the book, but and that's Stardust.
Nik:Stardust is a better movie than a book.
Nik:Ender's game is not a better movie.
Tayler:Nick.
Nik:a terrible friend.
Nik:Um, and that's because you're pulling up my heart strings on that one.
Nik:It's like, why don't you just give me a paper cut and pour lemon juice on it.
Nik:But,
Nik:Oh, the other thing is like fat Louie
Nik:Yeah.
Nik:As a much bigger part in the book.
Nik:Like she talks to him a lot more and.
Branden:I just did a cursory scan of Wikipedia about this series.
Branden:And apparently the name of Lily's show is not shut up and listen.
Branden:terrible.
Nik:it's much better as shut up and listen.
Tayler:Props to Disney for that one thing they did
Nik:oh, the other thing in the book series is that she obsessed a whole lot
Nik:more about her mom dating her teacher.
Nik:That is a huge part of the book is that sh there's like a whole thing about,
Branden:when you have a
Branden:book series with 11 books, you can spend time focusing on that.
Nik:15, year old obsessing about all my mom has been
Nik:single and now she's dating my
Tayler:I feel like if that happened to me at 15, I would also probably be pretty
Nik:Okay.
Nik:But she, but they, they establish her quirks a whole lot more in the
Nik:book and, just stuff like that.
Nik:And she's a vegetarian in the book.
Nik:It's a very big deal.
Nik:It's not in the movie
Branden:so apparently in this movie, like in the two movies that
Branden:Disney has produced Cabot, really, I get the impression that she's not
Branden:thrilled about the way that Disney.
Branden:Handled things because it did stray so much from the story,
Branden:especially by the second movie.
Branden:Right.
Branden:there's always talk about, are, is there going to be another SQL?
Branden:Is there going to be another SQL?
Branden:And because in the books, it turns out that
Nik:Oh,
Branden:in my opinion,
Nik:sleeping around.
Nik:no wonder mom was like, I don't want to be a part of this
Nik:world
Tayler:her mother that was sleeping around
Nik:Because then it wouldn't have a connection to the royalty,
Branden:Exactly.
Nik:Still, it could be drama, but obviously that's
Nik:just an easy thing to just
Branden:so fans have really wanted to have a third.
Branden:A third movie or a TV series.
Branden:Like
Tayler:I thought before Gary Marshall died, there were talks of a number
Tayler:three coming out and then Gary Marshall died and they were like, nevermind.
Tayler:We can't do without Gary.
Branden:Yeah, that's pretty much what I've gathered, but so Cabot though,
Branden:when she was asked about it she on her website, apparently her website is full
Branden:of just all sorts of juicy tidbits, but, she wrote that princess Mia does
Branden:not want tales from her personal life.
Branden:However, erroneously being splashed all over the big screen.
Branden:Apparently this is there, there's going to be some Some people who aren't happy
Branden:if another one is made, however it all depends on what the contract says, right?
Branden:If Disney owns the rights to the entire princess diaries series in perpetuity,
Branden:then they can do whatever they want.
Branden:But if she's like these books, this is what you get the
Branden:rights to then Disney can't.
Branden:But I think it would be really cool to see cause this the
Branden:sister is a biracial sister.
Branden:And so it'd be really cool to see like a 13 year old biracial girl going
Branden:through junior high as a Disney plus series that they could give the full on
Nik:dude, I would love that.
Nik:I would love that.
Branden:Put it on Disney plus and Hathaway cameos where she
Branden:can give, Oh, here's some advice
Nik:and if they actually put all of her friends in, now that I'm thinking about
Nik:it, her friends in the book are like an Asian girl, a black girl, a daughter
Nik:of a supermodel from Saudi Arabia.
Nik:a dude
Nik:and.
Nik:Yeah, his name's Boris or something.
Nik:So he's gotta be something.
Nik:I don't remember what his name.
Nik:But like it's and they're all tormented by Mandy Moore.
Nik:Like
Tayler:Specific actually in the book, it's Mandy, more
Tayler:specifically the actress that
Tayler:is,
Tayler:the villain.
Tayler:It's weird.
Nik:But yeah, Lana, Lana, Lana Weinberger, or something
Nik:like that is her name.
Nik:They talk about a lot.
Nik:And so that would be awesome.
Nik:Like I would love for my daughter to watch that look at all these
Branden:you could get Julie Andrews to
Branden:do,
Branden:do voiceover work from her office in her house.
Nik:Just substitute.
Nik:Cause like when they're talking about all the drama that's killing on throughout
Nik:all the town, just substitute with 15 year old girls, like I think that'd be
Tayler:You can bring the Sandra Oh.
Tayler:Back and she can give her iconic line reading of Guppta when she answers
Tayler:the phone, which I will tell you as a child, I rewind did that so many times,
Tayler:and I had no idea what she was saying.
Tayler:Yes.
Tayler:It took me years to finally understand as a child.
Tayler:I remember being so confused and being like, is this a new word?
Tayler:I don't know what it means.
Tayler:What could she possibly?
Tayler:And she
Nik:what's my
Nik:I can't imagine the phone and just being like Nick,
Tayler:The way she says it.
Tayler:I will never forget that line.
Tayler:Durable delivery cupped up.
Branden:I answered,
Branden:I answered the phone.
Branden:This is Brandon.
Branden:Is that weird?
Nik:No, that's fine.
Nik:I mean, I do that when I don't recognize the number,
Tayler:Not, you don't just instantly say Brandon
Branden:No, your brand I'm
Tayler:yeah, or but just the way she is.
Tayler:Cause it's not like it's, she's cooped up
Nik:Angry.
Nik:Oh, that's another thing now that I'm thinking about the book, the grandma
Nik:has so much more angry in the book.
Nik:She is not nice.
Branden:It
Branden:thing.
Branden:It is a Disney thing to make the grandma
Nik:she's much more like queen Elizabeth.
Branden:Have you met queen Elizabeth.
Nik:Oh, I have
Nik:times.
Nik:No, I
Tayler:We'll save that for a different episode.
Branden:all right.
Branden:So I, okay.
Branden:What if you could have a princess diaries, three, Nick, I know you
Branden:have watched the second one, but just know that she falls in love.
Branden:That's all that you
Nik:you know what I are, you know what?
Nik:I've already fallen in love with Chris pine myself, so I can totally
Nik:completely understand why she
Nik:would.
Nik:And he's probably like some other princely person, like a Duke or something
Branden:Yeah.
Branden:Okay.
Branden:So
Nik:I've already written
Branden:spoil this movie for you completely because
Nik:that's fine.
Nik:Oh, what a name?
Nik:Devereaux.
Nik:And you know what?
Nik:It comes straight from oceans too.
Nik:No, I'm just kidding.
Tayler:just
Nik:Devereaux
Tayler:him.
Tayler:Just with the
Nik:wait.
Nik:There's a, there's, there's a Devereaux from, that's a spy from some
Nik:something I watch and I'm just, anyway,
Nik:I think it might be
Branden:too.
Branden:There.
Branden:So in princess diaries too, like Mia has finally come to terms with the fact I'm
Branden:going to be the queen and they're going,
Branden:and, uh,
Branden:and so she's gone to college and she's gotten like all sorts of diplomacy
Branden:experience and returns to Novia.
Branden:And when she gets there
Nik:Gimli
Branden:John Reese Davies plays Viscount, Mayberry.
Branden:He's the villain, he's the guy
Branden:who's trying to, because apparently there is a law on the Genova in books
Branden:that says that you have to be married.
Branden:If you are going to rule as a queen,
Branden:you cannot be single
Branden:So Viscount Maybrey he gets, he's got a nephew who he has found a distant
Branden:blood connection to the throne.
Branden:And basically says he can be the King.
Branden:She can't be the queen.
Branden:And she says, watch me get married, give me 30 days.
Branden:And she finds, she finds a guy
Nik:you had another one of those things that I'm just like, Oh,
Nik:what are we teaching our children?
Branden:right, and and then she but by the end she's no, I don't have
Branden:to get married to spoiler alert.
Branden:Sorry.
Branden:I don't have to get married.
Branden:This lies stupid.
Branden:I make a motion.
Branden:I make a motion to abolish the law and
Branden:people voted for it.
Tayler:all the people like it is stupid
Nik:but then she ends up doing
Nik:It anyway in the third one.
Tayler:Something.
Nik:After they've established themselves, found
Tayler:Yes.
Nik:actually learned how to be King and queen.
Tayler:Yes.
Branden:Okay, so here's the question though.
Branden:If he has a direct bloodline to the throne,
Branden:does it mean to them?
Tayler:They're related.
Nik:Kissing cousins.
Nik:we all know Royal
Nik:families are incestuous anyway, right?
Tayler:So I mean that tracks,
Branden:yep.
Branden:No problem.
Branden:Any time.
Branden:yeah,
Branden:can't remember where I was going with that.
Branden:Yeah.
Branden:And that's probably what it was, is my great-grandfather's cousins
Branden:son.
Nik:Wouldn't that just be it in anyway,
Nik:you know, you don't go, you don't go back.
Nik:You don't go to the daughter and then the uncle, it could've
Nik:just been the father's brother.
Tayler:comedic a bit.
Tayler:We were doing
Nik:If you're going to do
Nik:it right.
Nik:Just going down the generations, instead of going back up to one.
Tayler:we can't have any fun.
Tayler:Could you remove your logic from this podcast that has no place here.
Branden:Here's what I definitely want us to do right now.
Branden:We've we spent some time talking about the princess diaries, three, what it could
Branden:be I speculated that maybe it should be a Disney plus series that goes over that.
Nik:Well, I The easiest answer is she gets married to Chris pine
Tayler:and
Tayler:she
Tayler:has a
Tayler:daughter
Nik:right?
Tayler:that's, as I say, I think the easiest, like next step would
Tayler:be, yeah, she has a daughter
Branden:okay.
Branden:What about she gets married to Chris pine and gets pregnant and then gets in
Branden:a fight with Chris pine and says fine.
Branden:You take the kingdom.
Branden:I'm moving to New York.
Nik:No,
Branden:moves to New York raises her daughter.
Branden:No, because this is the reboot.
Branden:This is the reboot.
Branden:And they've got to make Meg Cabot happy here so she moves to New York
Branden:with her daughter, never telling her
Nik:Okay.
Tayler:Okay.
Tayler:Okay.
Tayler:Here's my next, here's my next
Tayler:pitch.
Tayler:No.
Tayler:So she marries Chris pine, they have twins, then they get divorced and
Tayler:she says, you take one twin and I'm taking the other and I'm leaving.
Tayler:I'm going to go live in San Francisco.
Tayler:And then 10 years later, they meet at a summer camp and they both learn.
Tayler:But.
Tayler:Yes, but it's parents rap,
Tayler:princess style.
Branden:okay.
Branden:so Nick, you said that the most obvious thing to do would be
Branden:to have her have a baby, right?
Branden:Okay.
Branden:That's fair.
Nik:That's the progression of shows like this, right?
Nik:once you establish the boy meets girl in the second one, they get married and
Nik:then they have a child on the third one.
Branden:like the very first scene in the third one will have to be like a flashback
Branden:to the wedding or something like that.
Nik:I mean, if they want to go with a four-part thing they could, and maybe
Nik:just at the very end, they show the Royal baby, like Simba at the top of the castle.
Nik:And then the next one is, more about it, but
Tayler:Okay.
Tayler:What if we go for something completely opposite, we show up.
Tayler:All these years later, she didn't marry Chris pine.
Tayler:They never even got married
Nik:As a spinster and has 14 cats and they're all named King Louie
Nik:or whatever, his name, fat Louie.
Nik:why?
Nik:Because that's not fun to watch.
Nik:Everyone's got to be the chosen one and fall from their graces
Nik:and then come back out of it.
Branden:what if this is the Royal
Nik:kidding.
Branden:huh?
Branden:Okay.
Branden:So here's a thought, what if the third movie isn't like the next
Branden:generation, but it's the wedding?
Branden:So the wedding, right?
Branden:She's after all these years,
Nik:Oh, it's
Branden:to get married.
Nik:my best friend's wedding.
Nik:like,
Tayler:comes back.
Nik:And then the fourth movie is
Tayler:Yeah, it's going to be like a Bridget Jones baby one where
Tayler:she doesn't know it's Michael or
Tayler:sure.
Branden:I think that could be fun.
Branden:I've got one more idea.
Branden:And I w I would love to see you guys spin ideas from this idea, because this
Branden:is a much more Oh, clearly this is a fan service movie at this point, like
Branden:princess diaries, high school reunion,
Nik:she goes back.
Nik:She goes back to her 10 year.
Nik:She goes back.
Nik:No, she goes back to
Nik:her 10 year reunion as the princess, as.
Nik:20 years
Nik:And she's the queen of Genova and decides go back to San
Branden:to her high school reunion.
Branden:We've got Lana.
Branden:I w you know, you've got lotta who was the queen bee, but also the jerk.
Nik:No, but I think we got to do that with the series though, because there
Nik:are so many more compelling characters
Branden:Clearly the series is the best option.
Branden:this is the best
Nik:this will just be like the
Tayler:Well,
Tayler:And I was going to say, what, so what stops us from having it all really?
Tayler:What if we have a third movie that is maybe a continuation, more of me,
Tayler:a story and maybe a wrap-up of that.
Tayler:And then we all, we also, and then maybe at the end, that starts a
Tayler:series where it's and there's a knock at the door and it's her sister
Tayler:and then cut
Tayler:to.
Tayler:On Disney
Tayler:plus this summer
Nik:feel like that her friend Lily would be,
Nik:like an environmental lawyer lobbying against
Branden:Genova makes a bunch of money through creating lithium ion
Nik:Yeah.
Branden:which are terrible for the environment.
Branden:And it puts Lily
Branden:and Mia at odds with each other.
Branden:And
Tayler:You've lost us.
Tayler:You mean you're not going to help me with my spotted owl petition after
Tayler:school, someone wrote that line.
Tayler:Someone spoke that line
Nik:I wonder, okay.
Nik:Legitimately, we are talking about like a history of this movie.
Nik:been in Lilly?
Nik:Because I,
Tayler:in scream.
Nik:Oh yeah.
Nik:So I'm, I would not have ever seen that movie and you're, and
Nik:we're not doing, we're not doing
Nik:episodes on those.
Nik:I'm sorry.
Tayler:That's fine.
Tayler:I respect that.
Tayler:I know.
Tayler:I respect your boundaries.
Tayler:Um,
Tayler:was
Branden:name is Heather
Branden:Matarazzo
Branden:and I'm sure that's how you say it to
Tayler:welcome to the doll house.
Nik:the doll
Tayler:She's in welcome to the
Nik:Okay.
Nik:Yeah.
Nik:I was going to be really confused.
Nik:Oh, I have seen that movie that has, does it have Mandy Moore in it?
Nik:my dad used to get
Nik:random.
Nik:Yeah.
Nik:My dad used to get random like DVDs when blockbuster and
Nik:Hollywood video were still a thing.
Nik:And they loved my dad because he would literally walk in every week and
Nik:they'd be like, here's all the movies that are $2 that we're trying to get
Nik:rid of and he would buy them all.
Nik:And so we had the most random movie collection growing
Nik:up and I remember saved.
Nik:It was like Mandy Moore was an angel or something.
Nik:It was weird.
Nik:Anyway, it was not a good show, but my dad had it cause he liked
Branden:She's a working actor.
Branden:She's had roles up into the tour 2020,
Nik:That's awesome.
Nik:Yeah, and but I did not recognize her in anything.
Nik:I did not recognize her.
Nik:This was like legitimately, I thought.
Nik:I don't know, but she's, she's a character actor, which is awesome.
Nik:I would totally kill to be in that.
Tayler:I will.
Tayler:I'm really curious of Nick will like Lily better in the second movie.
Branden:doesn't have much to do
Tayler:liked her more.
Branden:Here's some more supporting actor trivia, Michael Moskovitz
Branden:the actor who played him, his
Branden:name.
Branden:Yeah, he's in a band named Rooney.
Tayler:They had that one song that was a hit that you probably know that
Tayler:I can't think of how it goes now.
Branden:Yeah.
Branden:In the second movie, his character was written out and the explanation was
Nik:Oh, my gosh.
Nik:Yeah, because he's got
Nik:successful
Tayler:That's song.
Tayler:heart go missing?
Tayler:Do you know that song?
Nik:Sorry.
Nik:I probably would know what it was if I actually heard it sung
Tayler:Yeah, I was gonna say,
Tayler:I was going to try and continue, but want to feel more shame than I already do.
Nik:I looked up a little more trivia on this movie and apparently
Nik:Anne Hathaway, real life pet
Tayler:I also feel like I remember this trivia and you might
Tayler:have to fact check me on this.
Tayler:Is that in the movie, the actor that plays her dad, where you just see him, I
Tayler:think in like a pitcher and then you see him in the scene where he's like writing
Tayler:in the diary to her is her real dad.
Nik:Um,
Tayler:trivia in my head that I
Tayler:maybe I just made that up.
Nik:here's another fun fact.
Nik:Hector Alese on though has been in every single film that
Nik:Gary Marshall has directed.
Nik:that includes pretty woman runaway bride, Helen.
Nik:I loved raising Helen.
Nik:That was a great movie.
Tayler:He's got raising Helen.
Tayler:We should watch
Tayler:raising Allen can someone, Brandon, could you just
Tayler:clip out
Tayler:time I say we should watch
Nik:It says the photograph of me as father in the film's opening scene
Nik:is actually Anne Hathaway's dad.
Nik:That is something that says on this list of cool about
Branden:But the, so that may have been what he and Hathaway's dad looks
Branden:like, but the voice of Phillip Rinaldi
Branden:than Renee Albert Jones.
Branden:Okay.
Branden:So I, I don't know if you know who he is.
Branden:You will know the second that I tell you one role that
Nik:Hello?
Nik:Oh, he's fantastic.
Nik:Here's another fun fact.
Nik:Julie Andrews wore a half, a million dollars worth of diamonds in her jewelry
Nik:and Tiara and the final scene of the film.
Nik:She's Oh, these are this mine.
Tayler:I got these.
Nik:That was about her.
Nik:I said that was hilarious.
Nik:I don't know.
Nik:I don't know what it was either.
Nik:These are just mine.
Nik:Thank you very much.
Nik:It's ju
Nik:it's made you Noveon.
Tayler:Is it just in my head or when they sing the Genovia and it just Oh,
Tayler:is it just that I feel like it just is that I'm like, is that the
Tayler:joke that they're just singing?
Tayler:Oh, Canada, but they're just singing.
Branden:There's a full on there are lyrics to that.
Tayler:Oh yeah, they sing it again in the second one.
Nik:Um, Oh apparently Kathleen Marshall who played queen Clarice's aide.
Nik:Charlotte is the daughter
Tayler:of Gary Marshall?
Nik:here.
Nik:I love that.
Nik:She's just like totally okay with Joe
Tayler:yeah, And she just like backs.
Tayler:Yeah.
Tayler:She just like backs out slowly or I think it's just very sweet when queen
Tayler:Clarice is like, and Charlotte, the garden looks beautiful and she's thank you.
Nik:That's funny during an audition And Hathaway accidentally fell off her chair.
Nik:And that's what won her the the role without even doing a screen test,
Nik:they felt that it was very Mia ESC.
Tayler:authentic.
Nik:she was very, so
Nik:not only, yeah I practice it all the time actually, because I
Tayler:Thank you for being here today.
Branden:All right with that said, I have to say thank you for being here today.
Branden:So this is, this has been our history episode on princess diaries.
Branden:There is a lot of history okay.
Branden:We could have shoved in some more, like here is the history of Genovia,
Branden:but we've really tried not to this is the meat and potatoes of the history
Branden:you got to hear about Julie Andrews cursing problem.
Branden:I'm just saying,
Branden:I'm just saying,
Branden:All right.
Branden:Okay.
Branden:That our next episode will be our bad algorithm episode.
Branden:This is where we will pair.
Branden:Princess diaries with other media out there so that you can know
Branden:where to go next on this franchise.
Branden:If you really love princess diaries, you might also like something else.
Branden:So I guess all this left to say is until next time
Nik:Anna Filana
