Speaker:media marketing world 2018.

Speaker:not have ever heard before.

Speaker:crafters, and makers pursuing your dream can be fun.

Speaker:resources, and the support you need to grow.
Speaker:Your gift biz here is your host gift biz gal,
Speaker:Sue moon Heights.
Speaker:So as I was saying,
Speaker:And in the intro,
Speaker:I want to dedicate this episode to talking about what I've
Speaker:learned from social media marketing world.
Speaker:If you're not familiar with what this is,
Speaker:it's an annual conference that literally pulls in people from all
Speaker:over the world.
Speaker:Seriously, New Zealand,
Speaker:Australia, London,
Speaker:Canada, everywhere.
Speaker:You can possibly imagine.
Speaker:There is representation here.
Speaker:And the name suggests that it's all around social media,
Speaker:but it's really not.
Speaker:There's also bloggers and podcasters and creators of all sorts there.
Speaker:So it's a huge group of people coming together to learn
Speaker:from the professionals,
Speaker:the world's best,
Speaker:what is going on.
Speaker:What's the newest,
Speaker:what's the greatest in this whole world of social media and
Speaker:online marketing this year,
Speaker:there were approximately 5,000
Speaker:people there.
Speaker:So you can imagine it was huge and there were over
Speaker:a hundred different speakers.
Speaker:So great place to go,
Speaker:albeit a little bit overwhelming with all those people,
Speaker:but wonderfully run and the most quality of content that you
Speaker:could expect anywhere.
Speaker:Now, my approach,
Speaker:when I'm going into one of these conferences is to make
Speaker:sure that I have gotten as much out of it as
Speaker:I possibly can.
Speaker:You know,
Speaker:there's the expense of buying the ticket and your airfare and
Speaker:hotel and meals.
Speaker:And yeah,
Speaker:it's great to go to something like this,
Speaker:but if you're not bringing back something that's going to help
Speaker:you grow your business,
Speaker:then it's kind of been like a mini vacation and not
Speaker:really something for business.
Speaker:If you've been following me for any length of time,
Speaker:this is going to sound familiar because I did a blog
Speaker:post a while back about how to attend an event like
Speaker:this and get the most out of it that you possibly
Speaker:can. If you're interested in taking a look at that,
Speaker:you can see it over on gift biz,
Speaker:unwrapped forward slash show Results.
Speaker:And there is a worksheet that talks about something that I'm
Speaker:going to talk about in half a second and also a
Speaker:packing list that then you don't have to figure out what
Speaker:you need to put in your suitcase.
Speaker:You just follow the packing list and you are good to
Speaker:go. So again,
Speaker:all of that's available on gift biz on rapt.com
Speaker:forward slash show Results.
Speaker:Now, when I go to a show,
Speaker:I like to identify three top things that I want to
Speaker:take back.
Speaker:You know,
Speaker:you can go in with a purpose of what you want
Speaker:to learn there.
Speaker:You know,
Speaker:you're totally focused like right,
Speaker:when you check in and then the second you go through
Speaker:the doors and you see this topic and this topic,
Speaker:and you run into this person and there's this lecture,
Speaker:all of those good intentions of the things that you really,
Speaker:really need go to the wayside.
Speaker:And in the worst of circumstances,
Speaker:you get so overwhelmed that you have a really great time.
Speaker:You learn a lot,
Speaker:but you've captured so much.
Speaker:You go back to the office and you don't implement anything.
Speaker:So to prevent that,
Speaker:one of the things that I do is going into any
Speaker:event, I define three things.
Speaker:Like if there's only three things that I need to walk
Speaker:away, knowing more about being able to implement in my business,
Speaker:that's going to make me better in some way,
Speaker:as a business owner,
Speaker:then that is success.
Speaker:And anything that I get over and above that is great,
Speaker:but I need these three things for sure.
Speaker:And I actually suggest to people and I do it myself.
Speaker:That's why I'm going through and saying this all to you,
Speaker:halfway through an event,
Speaker:I'll go back and look at those three things and say,
Speaker:all right,
Speaker:have I done this already or not?
Speaker:Because there's still enough time to capture the information that I
Speaker:need. If for some reason I haven't got my big three
Speaker:covered. You wondering what my big three were?
Speaker:I will share them with you.
Speaker:So I walked into social media marketing world wanting to know
Speaker:three things,
Speaker:information about three things.
Speaker:The first was,
Speaker:Oh my gosh,
Speaker:if you haven't been around and heard about the Facebook algorithm
Speaker:that happened in January of this year,
Speaker:then I don't know,
Speaker:you might be hiding under a stone or something,
Speaker:but it seemed like the world went crazy about this new
Speaker:algorithm on Facebook.
Speaker:And so one of the things that I wanted to do
Speaker:was understand,
Speaker:all right,
Speaker:you know,
Speaker:some time has gone by now.
Speaker:What is this really mean for us as business owners who
Speaker:are using Facebook to grow our business?
Speaker:Are we posting more?
Speaker:Are we posting less?
Speaker:Like, what is the whole thing?
Speaker:So that was number one.
Speaker:Number two was live.
Speaker:We all know that live is the big thing now,
Speaker:but what's new in that realm.
Speaker:What platforms should you be using?
Speaker:Are there new techniques?
Speaker:Are there new tools?
Speaker:Is there a better way for me to conduct my live
Speaker:videos? What should I be doing to enhance and make what
Speaker:I'm already doing better?
Speaker:So that was my second one.
Speaker:And my third one.
Speaker:All right,
Speaker:you guys I've admitted this to my private gift biz builder
Speaker:group, but I haven't said it publicly yet anywhere else,
Speaker:but I'm going to do it right here,
Speaker:alive on the podcast.
Speaker:I have been working on a book for the last year
Speaker:and a half,
Speaker:two years,
Speaker:but running two businesses and this podcast has just kept putting
Speaker:off that project.
Speaker:You know,
Speaker:it's kind of like,
Speaker:you know,
Speaker:one of those term papers that sitting in the back of
Speaker:your shoulder,
Speaker:like you'd got to done to it and you got to
Speaker:get it done and you just don't.
Speaker:Well, that's how I'm feeling that this book is.
Speaker:So I was like,
Speaker:all right,
Speaker:I got to find somebody who can help me move forward
Speaker:and just get this thing done already.
Speaker:And yes,
Speaker:I've accomplished that one too.
Speaker:I've hired a book coach and I will have a book
Speaker:out this summer.
Speaker:And you are all my accountability partners because I've just said
Speaker:it here to the world.
Speaker:Oh my gosh.
Speaker:If you could see me here on the other side of
Speaker:the mic,
Speaker:I'm like cringing and rethinking,
Speaker:like, should I edit this out?
Speaker:Or should I keep it in?
Speaker:If you hear it on the podcast,
Speaker:obviously I kept it in.
Speaker:All right,
Speaker:let's get to the good.
Speaker:So those were my three.
Speaker:I did walk away learning information about all three and committing,
Speaker:as I had just said,
Speaker:and guess what?
Speaker:I'm not going to be talking to you about number one,
Speaker:two or three at all on this podcast,
Speaker:the new Facebook algorithm and live video are things that you're
Speaker:going to see all over the place.
Speaker:And I don't need to repeat what other people are saying.
Speaker:I want to talk to you about things that you're not
Speaker:going to necessarily hear elsewhere that can really help you with
Speaker:your presence on social media.
Speaker:I can know,
Speaker:I feel a little bit like I keep delaying getting into
Speaker:the content of this podcast,
Speaker:but I do feel like there's one other thing I want
Speaker:to share with you before I get into the other points,
Speaker:there were three overall messages that continually came out all three
Speaker:days of social media marketing world.
Speaker:And they were as follows.
Speaker:Number one,
Speaker:live is everything live is where you're going to be able
Speaker:to capture your audience,
Speaker:speak to them and have them really engage and understand who
Speaker:you are as a business owner and what your company is
Speaker:all about.
Speaker:Video is the type of content that always ranks the highest
Speaker:in the algorithms.
Speaker:So if you haven't gotten to the point yet where you're
Speaker:doing anything live,
Speaker:really pay attention.
Speaker:When people are talking about that and seriously consider what this
Speaker:can do for you for your business.
Speaker:The second topic that continue to be discussed throughout all the
Speaker:days was messenger bots,
Speaker:specifically Facebook messenger bots.
Speaker:And as we go on in the upcoming months,
Speaker:this is going to continue to be a big deal.
Speaker:I'm sure you've already started seeing activity in Facebook messenger with
Speaker:bots. Me not exactly sure how my audience is going to
Speaker:respond to them,
Speaker:but I'm paying attention.
Speaker:And that's what I want you guys to do to pay
Speaker:attention. You'll make your own call.
Speaker:But I think just even as consumers,
Speaker:we're going to start seeing more and more of these bots,
Speaker:just showing up in our Facebook messenger and helping us work
Speaker:through services that different businesses provide.
Speaker:So as you start seeing these come up,
Speaker:pay attention to them.
Speaker:And also as you're working through them,
Speaker:think about what possibly this could mean for your business.
Speaker:If you were to implement bots,
Speaker:the final thing was consistency.
Speaker:Whether you're a blogger,
Speaker:whether you go live posting on social media sites,
Speaker:et cetera,
Speaker:anything that you're doing is pointless,
Speaker:unless you're consistent,
Speaker:unless you show up repeatedly at the same time every week
Speaker:to the point where your audience,
Speaker:if you don't show up is like,
Speaker:Whoa, wait a minute.
Speaker:Where are they?
Speaker:Why am I not hearing that live video what's happening?
Speaker:So consistency,
Speaker:even you guys,
Speaker:if it's newsletters that you're sending out,
Speaker:whatever it is,
Speaker:the point is consistency is King or queen,
Speaker:whichever way you want to go with it.
Speaker:These three overall messages,
Speaker:I just want to get your attention on.
Speaker:As we move forward,
Speaker:live is everything pay attention to messenger bots and whatever you're
Speaker:doing, it is consistent over and over again.
Speaker:Or don't even start one of the big challenges I've had
Speaker:with consistency revolves around my Facebook live show.
Speaker:I go live on the gift biz,
Speaker:unwrapped Facebook page,
Speaker:Thursdays at 10.
Speaker:And my challenge has been boy,
Speaker:you know,
Speaker:some of you guys are working full-time jobs,
Speaker:so you can't listen.
Speaker:Then some of you are on the other side of the
Speaker:world. Some of you like there's all different times when people
Speaker:could be available.
Speaker:And yes,
Speaker:there's the replays,
Speaker:but it's really nice to have people there showing up live
Speaker:so you can interact with them.
Speaker:So I've always been challenged with that thinking,
Speaker:should I vary the time throughout the day?
Speaker:So different people can make it at different times or what
Speaker:exact time should it be?
Speaker:Should it be at night and give you a little hint
Speaker:and peak into me?
Speaker:I'm probably in my jammies about eight o'clock at night when
Speaker:maybe I could go live to an audience.
Speaker:So that's just not going to fit for me.
Speaker:And I got some confirmation at the convention that you know
Speaker:what you need to show up,
Speaker:live for your show when it's convenient for you,
Speaker:because consistency is way more important showing up week after week
Speaker:after week versus what time you're showing up.
Speaker:So that was an interesting learning.
Speaker:And I actually could take a deep breath and say,
Speaker:okay, chill,
Speaker:I've got this one down now,
Speaker:before we go further,
Speaker:let's take a quick break and hear from our sponsor.
Speaker:This podcast is made possible.
Speaker:Thanks to the support at the ribbon print company,
Speaker:create custom ribbons right in your store or craft studio in
Speaker:seconds, visit the ribbon print company.com
Speaker:for more information.
Speaker:Having said all of that.
Speaker:Now I want to get on to four takeaways that I
Speaker:don't think you're going to hear anywhere else.
Speaker:These are specifically important to you because they help with the
Speaker:way you're relating to your customer.
Speaker:Often we talk about the fact that most people don't make
Speaker:a purchase.
Speaker:Logically it's mostly emotional and emotional equates to one-on-one relationships.
Speaker:How you feel about people,
Speaker:how you can relate to a brand,
Speaker:how much you trust them.
Speaker:Well on social media,
Speaker:you have an opportunity to present yourself in this manner to
Speaker:so many more people than you'd ever be able to do
Speaker:person to person right in your local area,
Speaker:for example.
Speaker:And that's why these four points are so important.
Speaker:They're ways of doing things that bring out the true you
Speaker:and really will make your audience be able to relate to
Speaker:what you're all about.
Speaker:Let's kick it off with point number one,
Speaker:it is so apropos that this first point comes from Chris
Speaker:Ducker, who is founder of a company called Youpreneur.
Speaker:He specializes in building a personal brand.
Speaker:This is really important for people who are services,
Speaker:businesses, where they're the ones who provide everything around their company.
Speaker:But it's also really important in our area.
Speaker:Because if you're an artist,
Speaker:you are the front facing person of your business,
Speaker:the founder,
Speaker:the one who started everything and people are buying your products
Speaker:because they love your designs.
Speaker:So his point here was market like a magnet attract the
Speaker:best repel the rest.
Speaker:You know,
Speaker:we all think that we want to be everything.
Speaker:We want everyone to be our customer and everyone to love
Speaker:what we stand for.
Speaker:But when you stand for everything,
Speaker:you really stand for nothing.
Speaker:So this whole point that Chris is trying to drive down
Speaker:market like a magnet,
Speaker:attract the best repel,
Speaker:the rest attract the best,
Speaker:meaning the best who resonate with you,
Speaker:who like what you stand for,
Speaker:who love your craft,
Speaker:love your style.
Speaker:And everything becomes so easy when you're attracting the right people
Speaker:in social media,
Speaker:you want to stand proud and not be afraid to show
Speaker:who you really are.
Speaker:If you're a little quirky,
Speaker:be quirky.
Speaker:If you love snow,
Speaker:like I do love snow,
Speaker:be yourself.
Speaker:And you're going to naturally attract people who are going to
Speaker:be so much easier to work with because you kind of
Speaker:run with the same tune.
Speaker:If you will.
Speaker:I did a presentation summer and one of my slides had
Speaker:a scary spider on it.
Speaker:And a woman like freaking out about the spider.
Speaker:And my point on the slide was,
Speaker:it's not your job for people to like you,
Speaker:it's your job to show up as the authentic cue.
Speaker:And when you do that,
Speaker:the people who are attracted to you,
Speaker:not just like you,
Speaker:they love you.
Speaker:So point number one,
Speaker:make sure that when you're showing up for social media,
Speaker:you're adding your personality.
Speaker:You're showing the world who you are.
Speaker:And in that way,
Speaker:you are going to attract the best.
Speaker:And you guys don't worry about repelling.
Speaker:The rest takeaway.
Speaker:Number two comes from Jenna Kutcher.
Speaker:She's a wedding photographer and also has a podcast called the
Speaker:goal Digger.
Speaker:Great show you guys,
Speaker:if you're looking for more podcasts to listen to,
Speaker:and she said something that really landed hard with me,
Speaker:and I hope I'm able to verbalize it well enough.
Speaker:So you guys really get this point too,
Speaker:because truth be told.
Speaker:I see all of us being guilty of this.
Speaker:I'd even say a little bit more than time to time.
Speaker:Her big point is when you're posting online for business now,
Speaker:because everything we're talking about here is really for business,
Speaker:not necessarily when you're on your personal page,
Speaker:but make sure you're talking to your audience,
Speaker:let this sink in for a second.
Speaker:So really literally put yourself as if you are your ideal
Speaker:customer, reading your posts.
Speaker:Are you really talking to them in a lot of the
Speaker:things that you're putting out online,
Speaker:or are you really showing up for your friends or you
Speaker:showing up for your peers,
Speaker:other people who are in the industry that you might have
Speaker:a little bit of challenge with,
Speaker:right? Or are you showing up to stroke your ego?
Speaker:And this really hit me because I was thinking through some
Speaker:of the things that I see online and we see people
Speaker:showing what a great night out on the town.
Speaker:They're having taking pictures with someone who's important or kind of
Speaker:like bragging on-line.
Speaker:How does that feel for your customer?
Speaker:I really thought back when I heard this,
Speaker:I'm like,
Speaker:Whoa, wait,
Speaker:stop in the tracks.
Speaker:You know,
Speaker:what am I doing?
Speaker:And I went back and I looked at some of my
Speaker:posts now,
Speaker:not guilty all the time.
Speaker:Right? I'm pretty good at sitting in the seat of my
Speaker:customer. I hope,
Speaker:but it really made me think.
Speaker:So I want each of you every single time,
Speaker:you're putting out a post,
Speaker:regardless of what platform it is,
Speaker:make sure you're talking to your customer.
Speaker:There's other times to talk to your family or your friends
Speaker:or your peers in private groups that are industry specific.
Speaker:But when you're posting for business and trying to attract in
Speaker:new customers and deepening relationships with your existing customers,
Speaker:make sure you're wording things.
Speaker:And you're speaking to your customer.
Speaker:Okay? Point number three comes from Jasmine star.
Speaker:Jasmine is also a photographer and she brings home another really
Speaker:good point.
Speaker:And I've got to tell you,
Speaker:this lifted the weight off my shoulders.
Speaker:When I heard her say this,
Speaker:because in the past you guys,
Speaker:I've never been the one to be taking photos.
Speaker:When my husband and I go out on vacation,
Speaker:or when I'm with my family who are a big photograph
Speaker:family, I'm not the one taking the pictures.
Speaker:And I'm really,
Speaker:even to this day,
Speaker:not so great at sharing the pictures because I feel like
Speaker:being behind the lens I missing out on what's going on
Speaker:in front of the lens.
Speaker:I know a lot of people don't feel like that,
Speaker:but that's just me.
Speaker:And when Jasmine started talking about this point,
Speaker:I'm going to share with you in one second,
Speaker:it was like,
Speaker:Oh my gosh,
Speaker:thank you for permission.
Speaker:And the permission she gave us was go ahead and take
Speaker:all those pictures,
Speaker:because there are so many that you're going to want to
Speaker:have from your normal life that you're going to put on
Speaker:social media,
Speaker:but don't post right away.
Speaker:Don't totally interrupt your lunches or a vacation or a special
Speaker:time with family and friends to take a picture.
Speaker:And then all of a sudden you have to figure out
Speaker:the wording and you have to post in real time.
Speaker:No, no,
Speaker:no, not necessary.
Speaker:Take the pictures.
Speaker:And then post later plan things out on your different accounts.
Speaker:And then post later after the event,
Speaker:that way you can go and spend time and actually live
Speaker:your life.
Speaker:How refreshing is that?
Speaker:Finally point number four,
Speaker:this came from,
Speaker:Oh my gosh.
Speaker:Someone I respect and have been following forever.
Speaker:Pat Flynn of smart,
Speaker:passive income,
Speaker:also a podcast and a business working with small business owners.
Speaker:His major message was,
Speaker:again, when you're talking to your customers online,
Speaker:we just talked about the fact that you want to make
Speaker:sure you're talking to them,
Speaker:right? And not to other people,
Speaker:not indirectly or subconsciously to other people,
Speaker:but also show up for your audience.
Speaker:That's already there.
Speaker:This is Pat big message.
Speaker:Don't always be talking to people that you're trying to pull
Speaker:in, be of service,
Speaker:provide value and show up for your current customer base.
Speaker:Now that made me happy because I feel like that's a
Speaker:lot of what I do is try to serve and work
Speaker:with my own customer base.
Speaker:But it made me think maybe I need to post with
Speaker:a little bit more intention.
Speaker:Sometimes it's for serving my customer base,
Speaker:which is you.
Speaker:And then sometimes maybe it's for attracting new people too.
Speaker:And those might be different messages.
Speaker:They might not,
Speaker:I don't know,
Speaker:depends on what the post is,
Speaker:but just the mindset and the idea of showing up for
Speaker:your current customers is super powerful.
Speaker:There was an example of this described by Jenna,
Speaker:which I want to share with you because I think it
Speaker:really drives home.
Speaker:Pat's point.
Speaker:If you have a dinner party and you send out invitations
Speaker:or you make phone calls because it's a smaller party and
Speaker:it's the night of the party and everyone's come in,
Speaker:they've got their drinks,
Speaker:they've got their appetizers.
Speaker:You're sitting down to dinner.
Speaker:The attention of the host should be on the guests,
Speaker:right? What if you went out into the street and you
Speaker:decided you wanted the party bigger and you started trying to
Speaker:solicit people to come into your party,
Speaker:come on in and sit down.
Speaker:I'm having a great party.
Speaker:Come join us.
Speaker:The more the merrier,
Speaker:right? All of a sudden the attention is shifted.
Speaker:Your dear guests,
Speaker:that you've invited to random people that you don't know yet,
Speaker:who aren't in your group.
Speaker:How do you think the people feel who are sitting around
Speaker:the table on social media?
Speaker:You know,
Speaker:you could even say social media is one big dinner table,
Speaker:right? You want to show up and be present and entertain
Speaker:and engage with the people who are already at your table.
Speaker:Those who are already following you on your social media farms.
Speaker:So these are the four takeaways ways from social media marketing
Speaker:world that I don't think you're going to hear everywhere all
Speaker:the time.
Speaker:When people are talking about social media,
Speaker:they're talking about the new tools or the changes in the
Speaker:algorithm or how to sell more.
Speaker:And I wanted to talk to you really about your message,
Speaker:what your presence looks like when you're online and what kind
Speaker:of a message,
Speaker:what you're communicating out to the world to summarize again,
Speaker:point number one,
Speaker:market, like a magnet,
Speaker:attract those who are the best fit for you.
Speaker:And it's okay.
Speaker:If the others are repelled,
Speaker:they weren't going to be your best customer.
Speaker:Anyway, number two,
Speaker:make sure you're talking to your audience in your posts,
Speaker:not your friends,
Speaker:not your peers and not satisfying some inner ego thing that
Speaker:you might have going on.
Speaker:That's okay.
Speaker:We all have it,
Speaker:but just recognize it.
Speaker:And don't do that in your posts.
Speaker:Number three.
Speaker:Oh my gosh.
Speaker:So great post later live in your life,
Speaker:right? You do not have to post in real time.
Speaker:Take pictures,
Speaker:post them later,
Speaker:along with really well thought out wording and finally show up
Speaker:online for those who are already there,
Speaker:for those who have committed and are loyal to you and
Speaker:are following you.
Speaker:And those that we all are so appreciative of,
Speaker:just like I am of you show up for them.
Speaker:I've taken all four of these things to heart and really
Speaker:relooked at my whole social media posting strategy.
Speaker:I know this to be true when you show up for
Speaker:yourself and you don't try to pretend to be somebody else,
Speaker:you don't try to pretend to be all successful all the
Speaker:time, because reality is we aren't when you're just real and
Speaker:genuine and talk to your community and your followers with truth,
Speaker:they will fall more and more in love with you.
Speaker:They'll resonate with you because they get the fact that it's
Speaker:true. People can sense disingenuous people a mile away.
Speaker:I don't know who we think we're fooling when we try
Speaker:to be bigger than we are better than we are more
Speaker:than we are or perfect all the time,
Speaker:because let's face it.
Speaker:We aren't.
Speaker:So I'm giving you all permission to show up as your
Speaker:true self and make a Mark on the world.
Speaker:And speaking of you making a Mark on the world,
Speaker:I'm really excited to share with you next week's show.
Speaker:We're going to be talking about ways that you can be
Speaker:more productive,
Speaker:get more done in your day.
Speaker:So whatever it is that you provide out to the world,
Speaker:you can do more of an,
Speaker:Oh my gosh.
Speaker:Don't we all have problems with productivity and having our days
Speaker:fly by way faster than we want them to that's up
Speaker:next week.
