Speaker:

Matthew 27 is where we're gonna be, so why don't you turn

2

:

there in your Bibles to Matthew 27.

3

:

But today, actually today is, is

Matt and Brianna's anniversary.

4

:

In case you didn't know they've been

married for one year and one of my

5

:

favorite memories with Matt and Brianna.

6

:

Two years, sorry, my bad.

7

:

Two years.

8

:

Tough.

9

:

Two years.

10

:

Two years.

11

:

They're, they're married for two years.

12

:

One of my favorite memories with

the Daniels is that they helped

13

:

me find my wife's engagement ring.

14

:

And I always have that special moment

with them texting them, figuring

15

:

out what, what my wife wanted.

16

:

And I proposed 540 something

days ago to my wife.

17

:

One of the best moments of my life.

18

:

And.

19

:

The, the point of a

marriage proposal, right?

20

:

When you, when you get down on a knee

and you open up that box, hopefully

21

:

not upside down, right, Matt?

22

:

And, and you show your wife

the ring that you got her.

23

:

And the point of the proposal is to show

how much you love this person, right?

24

:

You're saying, look, look

how much I care about you.

25

:

I wanna spend the rest

of my life with you.

26

:

I'm this committed to you and I botched

you this really expensive piece of

27

:

jewelry to tell you how, how valuable

you are to me and how important

28

:

you are to me, that's the point.

29

:

Of, of a proposal, right?

30

:

You wanna show how big your love is for

the person that you're proposing to.

31

:

Now, tonight is another

display of really big love.

32

:

That's what we're gonna see a, a really

big display of, of love, and that's

33

:

what Jesus' death on the cross is.

34

:

It's a, it's a huge display of

his amazing, enormous love for us.

35

:

But the point of it is to show us that.

36

:

Not just Jesus love is big, but also

that our sin is really big, that

37

:

it shows us that God takes our, our

relationship with him really seriously.

38

:

And that's what I want you to

see from Matthew 27 is that only

39

:

Jesus can love you this much.

40

:

No one else would love you this much.

41

:

Right?

42

:

A lot of people love their spouse

this much to to do something like

43

:

this for them, but no one would

love you so much like Jesus did.

44

:

And it shows that He's the one.

45

:

The king.

46

:

He's the Messiah, and

that's our main point.

47

:

Tonight.

48

:

Jesus suffering and death

prove that he's the Messiah.

49

:

That he's the king.

50

:

It shows everything you

need to know about Jesus.

51

:

It shows you his love.

52

:

It shows you his qualification

to to be the king.

53

:

It shows you everything Jesus is and

stands for all of it at the cross.

54

:

So turn with me, Matthew 27.

55

:

If you're not there already,

what we're gonna do is we're

56

:

gonna go through this passage.

57

:

It's a, it's a long passage.

58

:

We're gonna go through it real

fast and I'm gonna give each

59

:

small group, I'm gonna give each

of you a theme to look for, okay?

60

:

So depending on what small group

you're you're in, you're all gonna

61

:

have a certain theme that you're on the

lookout for while I explain the passage.

62

:

Okay?

63

:

So this is how it's gonna work.

64

:

So if you're a junior high girl,

I want you to think about and, and

65

:

write down maybe, or mark down,

anytime Jesus gets called a title.

66

:

So anytime someone calls Jesus the son

of God, or they call him Christ, you

67

:

guys know that Christ is a title, right?

68

:

Christ isn't Jesus last name.

69

:

Christ is.

70

:

It means Messiah, so Christ or anytime

he gets called King of the Jew.

71

:

So if you're a junior high girl, anytime

you see Jesus getting called a title,

72

:

I want you to write something down

or make a tally mark or something.

73

:

If you're a junior high boy,

I want you to make a mark.

74

:

Anytime you see Jesus is rejected

or anytime he's suffering.

75

:

Anytime someone abandons Jesus or

turns their back on Jesus or doesn't

76

:

want Jesus or anytime he's suffering.

77

:

So anytime there's pain or

emotional suffering, right?

78

:

Anytime he's abandoned

or something like that.

79

:

So if you're a junior high boy,

that's what you're looking for.

80

:

High school girl.

81

:

I want you to look for proof

that Jesus is innocent.

82

:

I, a big theme in Matthew's gospel

is that, that Jesus is righteous.

83

:

Jesus is is perfect.

84

:

And so if you're a high school

girl, I want you to look for

85

:

evidence that Jesus is innocent.

86

:

Despite all the accusations that

are thrown at him, and if you're

87

:

a high school boy, you got the

most fun one in my opinion.

88

:

I want you to look for an

illusion that Jesus is the king.

89

:

Something that shows you

that Jesus is the king.

90

:

Now, I'll give you a hint in this,

in this story, it's almost backward

91

:

Jesus, just like his, his kingdom

so far, he's talked about humility.

92

:

He's talked about serving others.

93

:

The marks of Jesus kingship are more

about humility, and in some ways

94

:

they're even coming from his opponent.

95

:

So you might see someone maybe

give Jesus a crown, right?

96

:

But it's not a kingly crown.

97

:

It's a crown of thorns.

98

:

So that would be something that

shows that Jesus, they're making

99

:

fun of Jesus for being a king,

but really he is the king, right?

100

:

He's exactly who they're saying he is.

101

:

So that's what we're gonna do.

102

:

We're gonna go through this passage

as quick as I can, but I want

103

:

you to look for your theme, okay?

104

:

That's what you're gonna be looking for.

105

:

Everyone.

106

:

Everyone on the same page.

107

:

We're good.

108

:

Let's get Pastor BJ, north South in here.

109

:

Alright, let's go Matthew.

110

:

We're gonna start at the

very end of 26, actually.

111

:

Okay?

112

:

The very end of chapter 26, verse 57.

113

:

So remember, Jesus was in the garden

praying and his disciples were asleep, and

114

:

he was like, you guys couldn't stay awake.

115

:

And then Judas comes and arrests him.

116

:

So then they bring Jesus to

Caiaphas, the high priest.

117

:

All right?

118

:

So they bring Jesus

to, to the high priest.

119

:

All the Jewish leaders are there.

120

:

Verse 58, Peter was following

him far away, right?

121

:

So Peter is, he doesn't wanna

be associated with Jesus.

122

:

He's, he's afraid to be there.

123

:

So he's following him from far away and

he goes inside and verse 59, the chief

124

:

priest, the whole council, they're,

they're trying to make up lies against

125

:

Jesus, that they might put him to death.

126

:

Matthew says that.

127

:

He says, look, they were bringing

false charges, not real charges.

128

:

False charges against Jesus.

129

:

So then.

130

:

They didn't find any.

131

:

Verse 60.

132

:

You see that right there.

133

:

They, they didn't find anything.

134

:

All these people are, many

false witnesses came forward.

135

:

All these people come forward

and they can't find anything.

136

:

But finally, at last two people

come forward and then said, this

137

:

man said I'm able to destroy the

temple and rebuild it in three days.

138

:

And so the high priest stood

up and said, what are you,

139

:

what are you gonna say to that?

140

:

Jesus, we've finally got you.

141

:

We finally found.

142

:

People, right?

143

:

They need two people.

144

:

They can't just have one person,

two people who agreed about what

145

:

Jesus said that would be bad, right?

146

:

They're saying, oh, he's a terrorist.

147

:

He's here to destroy the temple.

148

:

So then what did Jesus answer?

149

:

Jesus remains silent.

150

:

He doesn't say anything.

151

:

High Priest said to him, I adjure you.

152

:

So it is.

153

:

It's really important.

154

:

Like I beg you by the living God, tell

us if you are the Christ, the son of God.

155

:

Now that's the question.

156

:

Matthew's been trying to help us

answer this whole time, right?

157

:

And the Jewish leaders

are like, Hey, tell us.

158

:

And what did you just say?

159

:

You said it right?

160

:

You're telling me who I really am,

even though you're opposing me.

161

:

You're telling me who I really am.

162

:

But I tell you right here, and this

is the quote from Daniel, I tell you

163

:

from now on, you will see the son

of man seated at the right hand of

164

:

power coming on the clouds of heaven.

165

:

So Jesus doesn't just say, yeah.

166

:

You're right, I'm the Christ.

167

:

He says, I'm actually

the, I'm the son of God.

168

:

I'm gonna rule the nations.

169

:

Then 65, the high priest tore his robes

and he said, he's uttered blasphemy.

170

:

He's claiming to be God.

171

:

What else do we need?

172

:

We should kill him.

173

:

That's basically what he's saying.

174

:

What's your judgment?

175

:

They answered, he deserves death.

176

:

So they spit on his face.

177

:

They struck him, some of them slapped him.

178

:

So they're, they're mocking Jesus.

179

:

They're beating him up and

they're making fun of him.

180

:

They're saying, if you're the Messiah,

you should be able to, to prophesy.

181

:

You should be able to

tell us who struck you.

182

:

You should be able to tell us

all these, all these things.

183

:

So they're calling him the Messiah,

but in a, in a derogatory way.

184

:

So that's Judas on trial.

185

:

And then remember then the

scene in 27 flips to Judas.

186

:

Who goes and hangs himself.

187

:

We're gonna skip that 'cause we

covered that last week and we're

188

:

gonna pick it up in verse 11.

189

:

Okay.

190

:

Chapter 27, verse 11.

191

:

So now we're resuming the trial.

192

:

So the Jews, now they're

bringing him to the governor.

193

:

That's Pilate.

194

:

The Jews couldn't crucify anyone.

195

:

Only the Romans could crucify someone.

196

:

So the Jews, they want Jesus crucified.

197

:

They don't just want Jesus.

198

:

Beat up.

199

:

They can't execute someone, so

they need the Romans to do it.

200

:

That's what they're doing here.

201

:

They're like, alright, we finally

have a charge against Jesus.

202

:

He's, he's committed blasphemy.

203

:

He's claiming to be God.

204

:

Let's take him to the Romans to

see if they can kill him for us.

205

:

So the governor asked him, Pilate,

are you the king of the Jews?

206

:

Jesus said, you said it.

207

:

I am the king of the Jews.

208

:

But verse 12, when he was accused

by the Chief Reese, the Jewish

209

:

leaders, he gave no answer.

210

:

He didn't say anything.

211

:

Pilate said to him, don't

you hear what they're saying?

212

:

They're, they're saying all

these things about you, Jesus.

213

:

Are you gonna say anything?

214

:

No.

215

:

Jesus gives no answer, not

even to a single charge.

216

:

So the Governor was amazed.

217

:

Now, verse 15 at the feast, the

Governor, so Pilate, he was he, he had

218

:

this thing, his deal, usually at this

big celebration, the Passover for the

219

:

Jews, he would release a prisoner.

220

:

A prisoner that was in jail, a

Jewish prisoner that they would want.

221

:

He did it just so they wouldn't get super

mad at him, and he could keep his job.

222

:

Verse 16, they had a notorious prisoner

called Barabbas, which we learned

223

:

means son of the Father, right?

224

:

Bar in Hebrew means son, Abba Father.

225

:

You see that son of the father, verse 17.

226

:

So when they all gathered together,

all the, all the people, pilot's

227

:

gonna release a prisoner, right?

228

:

PIL said to them, who do you

want me to release for you?

229

:

The rabbis or Jesus who

is called Christ Jesus?

230

:

Who, who?

231

:

Which is funny, right?

232

:

Pilate is like, you guys called him the

Messiah and they're like, no, we don't.

233

:

Verse 18.

234

:

Before he knew that it was out of envy

that they delivered him up, right?

235

:

Not because Jesus was actually guilty.

236

:

He, Matthew says, look, Pilate

knew Jesus was innocent.

237

:

He knows that it's the Jewish

leaders who just don't like Jesus.

238

:

They want to get rid of him.

239

:

Verse 19, besides while he was

sitting on the judgment seat,

240

:

his wife sent word to him.

241

:

Don't have anything to do

with this righteous man.

242

:

You see that not, not a guilty man,

not a sinner, not a troublemaker,

243

:

a righteous man for I have suffered

much because of him today in a dream.

244

:

So pilot's wife had a dream

that told her Jesus is innocent.

245

:

And she said, Hey, don't,

don't mess with this guy.

246

:

Don't send him to death.

247

:

So then verse 20, now the chief

priests and the elders persuade

248

:

the crowd and they say, kill Jesus.

249

:

We want baras.

250

:

Verse 21, the governor again said to them.

251

:

Which of these two do

you want me to release?

252

:

So Pilate, he's almost like trying, right?

253

:

Like, please pick Jesus guys so

I don't have to just release him.

254

:

Pilate doesn't want to kill Jesus, but

he also is afraid of the crowd, right?

255

:

He's got all these angry

people that want to kill Jesus.

256

:

So which of these two do

you want me to release?

257

:

And they say, Barra, verse 22.

258

:

Pilate said to them, then what shall

I do with Jesus who is called Christ?

259

:

You keep seeing this, right?

260

:

They're like, oh, you know, we're

saying that Jesus is Messiah, right?

261

:

And they all said, let him be crucified.

262

:

We wanna kill him.

263

:

And he's like, why?

264

:

What evil has he done?

265

:

So Matthew really wants you to know that

Pilate doesn't think Jesus is guilty.

266

:

Pilate really is like trying not

to kill Jesus, but they shout all

267

:

the more, let him be crucified.

268

:

Now remember, these are the same

people, two chapters earlier who were

269

:

saying Hosanna to the son of David.

270

:

So the Jewish people have rejected Jesus.

271

:

The same people who the crowds

who were celebrating him

272

:

are now wanting to kill him.

273

:

So verse 24, when Pilate saw that

he was gaining nothing, right?

274

:

He's not getting anywhere with this, but

rather that a riot is beginning, right?

275

:

So the, the Jews are getting

upset, they're getting angry.

276

:

They wanna kill Jesus.

277

:

They're like, Pilate, why

don't you kill Jesus for us?

278

:

He's like, all right, fine.

279

:

He took water, washed his

hands before the crowd.

280

:

I'm innocent in this man's blood, right?

281

:

It's, you're killing an innocent guy.

282

:

It's not my fault.

283

:

That's what pilot's saying.

284

:

It's on you guys.

285

:

Verse 25, all the people answered.

286

:

His blood beyond us and our

children, they're like, yes, we

287

:

want to be guilty for Jesus' blood.

288

:

We want responsibility for killing Jesus.

289

:

So he releases Barabbas and having

scoured, Jesus sent him to be crucified.

290

:

Now, scoured, you might have heard

this before, what they would do in

291

:

Roman times with prisoners is they

would have not just a regular whip,

292

:

but a whip with like nine or so little

like, I guess fingers, and they would

293

:

whip it and drag it across your back.

294

:

It had all these little pieces of

like glass and bone and rock in it.

295

:

So it would literally just

tear the skin off your back.

296

:

And so they, they beat Jesus with

this whip and ripped his back up

297

:

and they sent him to be crucified.

298

:

Verse 27, the soldiers of the governor

took Jesus into the governor's

299

:

headquarters and they gathered

the whole battalion before him.

300

:

So they got all these

soldiers and now Jesus.

301

:

So there's no Jews around

now, it's just the soldiers.

302

:

And they took, they stripped him.

303

:

They put a scarlet, scarlet robe on him

and twisting together a crown of thorns.

304

:

They put it on his head.

305

:

Now they're not just like gently

placing it on his head, right?

306

:

They're like sticking it in his head.

307

:

So there's blood coming on his face.

308

:

They're making fun of him.

309

:

So this is the color of royalty.

310

:

So Matthew is saying they're

pretending Jesus is a king, and

311

:

I think Matthew wants to see.

312

:

Jesus.

313

:

Really The king, right?

314

:

So they give him a crown, they

give him a royal robe, they

315

:

put a reed in his right hand.

316

:

Now that usually if you're a

king, right, you've got a scepter,

317

:

you've got some kind of staff.

318

:

Think of like, you know, Lord of the

Rings, Gandalf with his staff, right?

319

:

That's what Kings had back in the day.

320

:

And so he's got a staff, so

they're dressing up like a

321

:

king and they kneel before him.

322

:

They make fun of him, and they

say, hail king of the Jews.

323

:

Now, isn't this the most ironic thing

you could ever do, making fun of

324

:

the King of Kings for being a king?

325

:

So they're doing all this

and they spit on him and then

326

:

they take all this stuff away.

327

:

They beat him up more.

328

:

And then when they mocked him, so

they make fun of him, they take off

329

:

all his clothes and they put his

regular clothes back on him, which

330

:

are probably totally destroyed, right?

331

:

'cause they've whipped him and

they let him away to crucify him.

332

:

This is horrible, right?

333

:

This is terrible.

334

:

All, just think about what Jesus would

look like after all this happened.

335

:

Think about having the thorns in his,

in his head and being beaten up and

336

:

having people spit all over his face.

337

:

So then they went out and they

found a man from Siren, his name's

338

:

Simon, and they said, all right,

you need to carry Jesus cross.

339

:

Now think about it across is

a really thick wooden beam.

340

:

If you, if all this just happened to

you, would you want to carry that?

341

:

Would you be able to carry that?

342

:

So Jesus needs help and they want to carry

it, but also they don't want Jesus to die.

343

:

'cause they wanna torture him more.

344

:

So they get Simon and carry Jesus cross.

345

:

Verse 33, they came to a place called Go

Gotha, which means place of the skull.

346

:

And they offered him wine

to drink mixed with gall.

347

:

When he tasted it, he wouldn't drink it.

348

:

Now what some people say is that

this is probably a painkiller and

349

:

Jesus is saying No painkiller for me.

350

:

Also, it's an illusion to a Psalm,

which is connecting Jesus to David.

351

:

That's another reason

Matthew includes this detail.

352

:

Verse 35.

353

:

They crucified him.

354

:

Which by the way, the fact that that's

just like a throwaway statement when

355

:

they crucified him just happened.

356

:

Like think about that, right?

357

:

That they crucified him, and

then they divided his garments

358

:

among them by casting lots.

359

:

That's actually a quote from Psalm

22, which talks about Jesus' death

360

:

too, before Jesus was even born, verse

36, they sat down, they kept watch

361

:

over him and over his head they put

the charge against him, which read.

362

:

This is Jesus the king of the Jews.

363

:

Jesus who said he was king of the Jews.

364

:

Jesus, the king of the Jews.

365

:

And I think that's another

note of irony, right?

366

:

Is Jesus really the king of the Jews?

367

:

Yeah.

368

:

So Jesus died.

369

:

And by the way, about crucifixion,

when you, when someone was crucified,

370

:

they usually suffocated to death

because to breathe you have to pull

371

:

yourself up because you're, you're

hanging so your lungs are collapsed.

372

:

So you have to pull yourself up.

373

:

Now what's holding you up a nail.

374

:

So you're pulling yourself up on a

nail that's in your hand or your arm.

375

:

And also do you think they like

varnished the cross and made it

376

:

nice and smooth and all that?

377

:

Right?

378

:

It's probably just like

splintery and all that and that.

379

:

And remember Jesus' back is already all

whipped and destroyed, so he's pulling

380

:

himself up against this beam to breathe

and then probably suffocates to death.

381

:

Meanwhile on the cross, the two robbers

that were crucified with him, one

382

:

on the right, one on the left, and

they passed by, or sorry, and those

383

:

who passed by him, they made fun of

him, and they're wagging their heads.

384

:

That just means they're,

they're making fun of him.

385

:

They're saying bad things about him.

386

:

You, you know, you said you

destroyed the temple and rebuild it.

387

:

Can't you save yourself?

388

:

Jesus, you said you were so powerful.

389

:

Why don't you do something if you're the

son of God, come down from the cross.

390

:

Could Jesus have done that?

391

:

Yeah, if you are the son of

God, so they're saying, if you

392

:

are really, what do we know?

393

:

Jesus is right.

394

:

Verse 41, the chief priest with

scribes and elder, they mock him.

395

:

They make fun of him.

396

:

He saved others.

397

:

He can't save himself.

398

:

He's the king of Israel.

399

:

Let him come down from the

cross and we'll believe in him.

400

:

He trusts in God.

401

:

Let God save him for he

said, I am the son of God.

402

:

So the Jewish leaders know

that Jesus said this, right?

403

:

If, if someone ever tells you,

Hey, Jesus never claimed to be God.

404

:

Let's go to this passage, right?

405

:

The Jewish leaders are

saying, Jesus said this right?

406

:

The people who dislike Jesus the

most, and the two robbers, even the

407

:

robbers who are crucified with him,

they're in between, I guess, breaths.

408

:

They're making fun of Jesus, and they're

saying, why couldn't you save yourself?

409

:

So then verse 45, from the

sixth hour, that's about noon.

410

:

There was darkness over all

the land until the ninth hour.

411

:

Not a storm, right?

412

:

Darkness.

413

:

Uh, verse 46, and then about the ninth

hour, Jesus cried out with a loud

414

:

voice saying, and this is Aramaic.

415

:

So that's the language at the time.

416

:

Eli, Eli Ani, which

that is my God, my God.

417

:

Why have you forsaken me?

418

:

All the stuff that Jesus

endured up to this point.

419

:

This is the worst thing.

420

:

Here's why Jesus isn't just

dying a physical death.

421

:

He's suffering God's wrath

against every sin that for

422

:

anyone who would trust in him.

423

:

So Jesus is essentially suffering

all that people normally would

424

:

suffer in hell from God on the cross.

425

:

He's suffering God's

wrath on the cross too.

426

:

Not just people beating him up,

not just nails in his hands.

427

:

Not just whipped on his back,

not just splinters, crown of

428

:

thorns, all that he's suffering.

429

:

God's wrath, God's punishment for for sin.

430

:

For my sin, maybe for your sin.

431

:

And so he's separated from God.

432

:

Verse 47.

433

:

Some of the bystanders, they heard it and

they say, oh, he's calling for Elijah.

434

:

Verse 48.

435

:

One of them at once took a sponge,

filled it with sour wine, put it on a a

436

:

stick, gave it to him, and they're like,

wait, let's see if Elijah's gonna come.

437

:

And then Jesus cried out.

438

:

With a loud voice yielded up his spirit.

439

:

Now, what some people think, who's

the one giving up the spirit here?

440

:

His spirit, Jesus is right.

441

:

So some people think

Matthew is actually showing.

442

:

Look, Jesus chose when to die

because Jesus is in control, right?

443

:

This whole time, Jesus

is the one in control.

444

:

Jesus wouldn't die unless

he let himself die.

445

:

So then when Jesus died,

this is what happens.

446

:

Verse 51, the curtain of

the temple was torn in two.

447

:

From top to bottom.

448

:

Now the curtain in the temple

separates the holy place.

449

:

If you, if you think back at the

tabernacle, separates the place

450

:

where God is from everyone else.

451

:

So this is symbolizing.

452

:

Now that barrier between you

and God is gone because Jesus

453

:

took God's wrath, right?

454

:

So now you can come to God because God

can put all your sin on Jesus Now, right?

455

:

Also, top to bottom.

456

:

Why does that matter?

457

:

Well, how tall is this thing?

458

:

It's huge.

459

:

So could you reach the top and,

and tear it all the way down?

460

:

No.

461

:

Right?

462

:

So someone had to fly up

there and do it right?

463

:

God did it.

464

:

So the earth shook, the rocks were

split and the tombs were open.

465

:

So all these dead people are,

are coming outta their graves.

466

:

And after the resurrection,

they're walking around

467

:

Jerusalem, which is wild, right?

468

:

Like.

469

:

Who like saints.

470

:

I mean, maybe what, like

Abraham, David, I don't know.

471

:

They're walking around Jerusalem

after Jesus comes back from the dead.

472

:

Verse 54, when the centurion, so

the Roman general and those who

473

:

are with him, they're keeping

watch over Jesus while he is dying.

474

:

They see the earthquake and they

see everything, all this stuff,

475

:

this crazy stuff that's happening.

476

:

They're filled with awe, right?

477

:

They're, they're, they're

essentially amazed.

478

:

They're worshiping and they said,

truly, this was the son of God.

479

:

So look who's recognizing

that Jesus, the son of God?

480

:

Is it the Jews who know

their Bibles really well?

481

:

It's the Roman general who's probably

never heard of the Old Testament in his

482

:

life, and he's the one who says, you know

what I think, I think this guy was legit.

483

:

I think this was Guy was

everything he said he would be.

484

:

So you see how Matthew was showing

us this picture of, of Jesus'

485

:

death that is actually telling us

everything Jesus said he was was true.

486

:

This is the last couple verses, verse 55.

487

:

There are also, there's many women

there looking on from a distance who'd

488

:

followed Jesus from Galilee, ministering

him, among whom were Mary Magdalene,

489

:

married the mother of James Joseph,

and the mother of the sons of Zedi.

490

:

Now, I think those details are

there because Matthew's telling

491

:

like, Hey, if you know these

people, you could go ask them.

492

:

They were there.

493

:

They saw it happen.

494

:

So what Matthew's doing

in this whole section.

495

:

Of of Jesus' death is he's

showing us that Jesus really is

496

:

everything he said he would be.

497

:

He really is innocent, righteous, perfect.

498

:

He really is the Son of God, divine,

the king, the king of the Jews,

499

:

but also the promised King from

the Old Testament who would do

500

:

everything God said he was gonna do.

501

:

And also that he's really showing

us that Jesus is conquering.

502

:

Jesus is winning.

503

:

Jesus isn't a victim.

504

:

Jesus is winning.

505

:

He's he's doing something big here.

506

:

He's conquering sin.

507

:

He's conquering death.

508

:

He's making a, a way to God.

509

:

And Jesus is the one.

510

:

He's doing this on purpose.

511

:

He is, he's the king

here, even in his death.

512

:

But also, Matthew puts a lot

of details in there, right?

513

:

Like, if, if this was a movie, it would

be rated R it would be a, a horror movie.

514

:

'cause there's 'cause of the amount

of bad stuff that's happening.

515

:

Like, you guys would not be allowed

to watch this if this was a movie.

516

:

Matthew wants us to see that Jesus

is, is suffering God's wrath.

517

:

Jesus is being treated terribly

because that's what sinners deserve.

518

:

Sinners deserve God's wrath.

519

:

Matthew wants us to see how

big a deal that our sin is.

520

:

So for our first point tonight, I want

you to remember that Jesus suffered

521

:

because of you, because of me.

522

:

Everything that Jesus went

through was because we sinned.

523

:

Right?

524

:

If, if we didn't sin, Jesus

wouldn't have had to do this.

525

:

Right?

526

:

Essentially, it's kind of our

fault all that is because I

527

:

did, I broke God's law, right?

528

:

I lied.

529

:

I lusted, I cheated.

530

:

I stole.

531

:

I was selfish.

532

:

I was prideful.

533

:

I was arrogant.

534

:

That's why this happened, right?

535

:

Not just, oh, Jesus died for sin.

536

:

Yes, but like my sin.

537

:

Your sin.

538

:

That's why.

539

:

Why all of this happened.

540

:

God wants you to see how big of a deal

your sin is, and actually God's been

541

:

doing this throughout all of history.

542

:

Think back to the Old Testament.

543

:

Think back to.

544

:

Your favorite book of the Bible.

545

:

Think back to Leviticus, right?

546

:

When, when you lived in the wilderness

in the tabernacle, there were, think

547

:

about how many animals were dying

every single day because of sin.

548

:

Think about how many animals were

killed every single day because

549

:

you broke God's law, right?

550

:

Because you didn't honor your father

and mother because you worshiped

551

:

another God instead of God.

552

:

Because you were selfish,

because you gossiped, right?

553

:

The, that's why all

these animals are dying.

554

:

So imagine you lived in this camp

and every day you're going to the

555

:

temple, you're coming up to the priest.

556

:

You put your hand on the, on

the animal, you kill the animal.

557

:

The blood gets everywhere, every

day, you're doing that to show

558

:

you your sin has consequences.

559

:

Your sin deserves death.

560

:

That's the whole point of, of the Old

Testament sacrifices, and that's the

561

:

whole point of what Jesus is doing.

562

:

God wants you to see how

big of a deal your sin is.

563

:

So remember that Jesus suffered

because of you, because of my sin.

564

:

Now, even if you're a Christian,

it's still good for you to think

565

:

about that because you can use

that to help you fight temptation.

566

:

You ever thought about that?

567

:

Maybe when you're tempted to be selfish or

you're tempted to lie, or you're tempted

568

:

to watch something, you shouldn't, you're

tempted to say something you shouldn't.

569

:

Or you're tempted to be

disrespectful to someone.

570

:

Think about, you know,

Jesus died because of that.

571

:

Think about someone driving

nails into Jesus' hands.

572

:

Think about someone whipping

Jesus on the back, right?

573

:

If you're struggling with sin,

you're actually fighting it.

574

:

You're a Christian.

575

:

You, you've been saved and, and

you don't wanna sit anymore.

576

:

Think about that.

577

:

It'll help you.

578

:

You'll be like, man, Jesus died for that.

579

:

I don't wanna do that.

580

:

Because sometimes when you're, when in

your everyday life, you know, on Tuesday

581

:

afternoon, you need something to, to shake

you awake, to be like, this matters God.

582

:

God matters.

583

:

Sin matters.

584

:

Jesus matters.

585

:

How I live matters.

586

:

So think about it.

587

:

Use it to help you.

588

:

That's why there's all these

details in the Bible about the

589

:

consequences of sin, right?

590

:

Maybe.

591

:

Maybe you're a Christian, but

you take forgiveness for granted.

592

:

You've been, you've been saved, but

you're just like, oh, well now, now

593

:

I'm not that bad, so I don't, you

don't feel your need for forgiveness.

594

:

That's why passages like this are in

the Bible, so you can think about,

595

:

you know what, I still need that,

that still should be me on the cross.

596

:

That's to help you think about,

you know what, I maybe not as as

597

:

righteous as I thought I should be.

598

:

I still need God's forgiveness every day.

599

:

That still should be me

based on how I live today.

600

:

I deserve that even as a Christian.

601

:

But maybe you're, you're not

a Christian and your sin is

602

:

just not a big deal to you.

603

:

You're just like, whatever.

604

:

It doesn't matter.

605

:

Maybe you are a Christian and

you've got some little sins that

606

:

you don't think are a big deal.

607

:

Maybe you don't want to forgive

someone, or maybe you don't really

608

:

talk to your parents very respectfully.

609

:

Those are still big deal.

610

:

A big deal.

611

:

God.

612

:

God says bitterness is a sin.

613

:

God says gossip is a sin.

614

:

God says, not honoring your

father and mother is a sin.

615

:

If, if you don't think those sins

are a big deal, look at Jesus.

616

:

Remember what he did on the cross.

617

:

So this is something for, for you to

do as a Christian on a regular basis.

618

:

Think about it when you, when you need

to feel the right way about something.

619

:

That's why there's all these

details about it in God's word.

620

:

Also, God wants you to

see how much he loves you.

621

:

That's also why he, he gave you all of all

of these descriptions about Jesus' death.

622

:

Because not only does it, is it supposed

to help us see our sin and how serious

623

:

our sin is, but it's also supposed to help

us see how serious God's love for us is.

624

:

Right?

625

:

Would you do what Jesus did for anyone?

626

:

Would you go through all

that for anyone else?

627

:

You'd have to love

someone a lot to do that.

628

:

It made me think about

Abraham and Isaac, right?

629

:

God.

630

:

God said, Hey Abraham, I want you to, to

take Isaac up the mountain to show me that

631

:

you love me more than you love your son.

632

:

Well, ultimately,

633

:

can you think of a father who

gave away his son because of

634

:

his love for other people?

635

:

That's what the, the cross is about.

636

:

The cross, which by the way,

happened on this same mountain.

637

:

Is to show you God's love.

638

:

The Father giving away his son for you,

his only son, the son he loved for you.

639

:

That's how much God loves you.

640

:

So use the cross to think

about how much God loves you.

641

:

Maybe you're, you're a Christian,

you doubt God loves you.

642

:

You're not sure if God forgives you.

643

:

You're not sure if your

sins really paid for.

644

:

Think about Jesus on the cross.

645

:

Is that enough to pay for your sin?

646

:

I hope.

647

:

I hope so, right?

648

:

Because if that's not enough, what is

So When you don't feel forgiven by God,

649

:

when you don't feel good enough for

God, think about what Jesus did and

650

:

remember, that's the payment for my sin.

651

:

I'm, I can't add anything to that.

652

:

I can't take anything away from it.

653

:

So if, if you're a Christian, you're not

sure if you're forgiven, you're, you're

654

:

having doubts about your salvation,

think about God's love at the cross.

655

:

Maybe you aren't a Christian.

656

:

You feel like, you feel like

maybe you can't come to God.

657

:

Uh, you know, God doesn't love me.

658

:

I'm too dirty.

659

:

I'm too sinful.

660

:

I can't do it.

661

:

God wouldn't want me.

662

:

God gave Jesus right?

663

:

For, for.

664

:

That's John three 16.

665

:

For God so loved the world.

666

:

Are you, are you part of the world?

667

:

Crosses for you.

668

:

God gave his son for you.

669

:

You're, you're not.

670

:

Left out of God's love.

671

:

So think about Jesus'.

672

:

Death.

673

:

Remember it.

674

:

Call it to mind when you, when you're

tempted, when you're, when you're

675

:

struggling with sin, when you're

fighting against it, when you're

676

:

apathetic, you're not feeling the way

you should about Jesus or your sin.

677

:

You're not convicted by

something the way you should be.

678

:

Or maybe you're doubting God's love.

679

:

Think about how much God

loves you to do that.

680

:

But if all you do is

feel bad for your sin.

681

:

You never, there's, that's all you do.

682

:

You just feel bad for

your sin all the time.

683

:

All the time.

684

:

You might end up like Judas, right?

685

:

Judas felt really bad for his sin.

686

:

We talked about that in our baseball game.

687

:

Judas felt bad for his sin, but

that's a good starting point.

688

:

But we need to take our

sin to Jesus, right?

689

:

Judas ran away from

from Jesus with his sin.

690

:

We need to take our sin and

our conviction to Jesus.

691

:

So our second point tonight is only

depend on Jesus to take away your sin.

692

:

There's only one way that you

can get your guilt taken away.

693

:

Feeling bad.

694

:

Doesn't get rid of your guilt.

695

:

Feeling bad.

696

:

Doesn't get rid of your sin.

697

:

Hiding from God doesn't

get rid of your sin.

698

:

Sitting on it and, and just feeling

terrible and saying how horrible you are.

699

:

That doesn't take away your sin.

700

:

Only Jesus can take away.

701

:

You're a sin and you can't

make up for it either.

702

:

Right.

703

:

It reminded me, I was thinking about,

about Jesus and his sacrifice, and

704

:

I was thinking about, about the

Chronicles of Narnia, if you've ever

705

:

seen this movie or read the book, right?

706

:

Who's this guy, Edmond?

707

:

What does Edmond, what does Edmond

do in the line in which, in the

708

:

wardrobe, what does Edmund do?

709

:

So Edmond in the story, he

betrays all the good guys.

710

:

So Edmond, this, this kid, he betrays

all the good guys and he, right,

711

:

he's, he's a bad person, right?

712

:

He's, he's Judas, right?

713

:

He betrays all the good guys.

714

:

And then what happens is Aslan the lion

talks to Edmund and he says, Hey, look.

715

:

By the way, like, I'm

not gonna explain that.

716

:

There's a talking lion

and, and all that stuff.

717

:

All right.

718

:

You can watch the movie, but Aslan

the Lion talks to Edmond and, and he

719

:

says, Hey, they had this conversation

and you don't see the, you don't

720

:

see the conversation in the movie.

721

:

You don't know what happened.

722

:

And they come out and the

lion looks really sad.

723

:

And then what happens later that night,

the lion goes to this scary looking

724

:

rock and gives himself up to die.

725

:

All the, all the bad guys kill the lion.

726

:

They tie him up.

727

:

They, they cut all his, his

mane off and they kill him.

728

:

And this is what he, they kill him

and they leave him on this rock.

729

:

And later what you find out is that

what happened was when you, when

730

:

you go back and put all the pieces

together, what you realize is that, that

731

:

Edmond here, Edmond should have died.

732

:

When, when the bad guy came to get rid of

Edmund Aslan said, here, take me instead.

733

:

That's because there's these laws

that in, in the land, there's

734

:

these deep magic whatever, that

you can't just let Edmund go free.

735

:

Someone has to die for what Edmund did.

736

:

And so the lion says, take me instead.

737

:

And so the lion dies and Edmund lives.

738

:

So Lan dies.

739

:

Edmund lives.

740

:

That's what it took for Edmond to be

free to be forgiven, someone had to die.

741

:

That's how God gets rid of

your guilt for your sin.

742

:

Someone had to die.

743

:

Jesus had to die.

744

:

He had to suffer the, the

punishment that you deserve.

745

:

God, if we want God to be a good

judge, you don't want God just being

746

:

like, oh, your sin is not a big deal.

747

:

'cause what if God did

that to other people?

748

:

Right.

749

:

Someone.

750

:

Beats you up and takes all your

money, and the judge is like, cool.

751

:

No worries.

752

:

I'm nice.

753

:

I forgive you.

754

:

You don't want that God.

755

:

So you want a God who's

gonna do something about sin.

756

:

But the problem is, is we've all sinned.

757

:

We all deserve God to

do something about us.

758

:

And so Jesus says, take me

instead I'll die so he can live.

759

:

But you have to trust Jesus

to take away your sin.

760

:

You can't look for other

ways to get rid of your sin.

761

:

I think sometimes we look for other things

that can take our, take away our sin.

762

:

We think, oh, maybe if I start

doing good things, maybe if I start

763

:

repenting, or maybe if I read my Bible

more, or once I stop doing this sin,

764

:

maybe then I'll be okay with God.

765

:

Maybe then God will love me.

766

:

You can never do enough good

things for God to love you.

767

:

Jesus can take away your sin.

768

:

You can't earn your way to heaven.

769

:

Or maybe you think if I just wait long

enough, or maybe if I hide my sin and

770

:

no one else knows about it, or maybe

if I hide from God, I don't really

771

:

talk to God, I just try to do the the

church thing that'll get rid of my sin.

772

:

That's not gonna work.

773

:

You have to go to Jesus

to get your sin to away.

774

:

Another thing I think we might

do to get rid of our sin is

775

:

we try to make excuses for it.

776

:

You know?

777

:

Well, I was, I, I, I get really upset, but

you know, my siblings are really annoying.

778

:

Or, uh, well, you know, I, my friends

at school, just, they, they use

779

:

those words and, and say those jokes

and, and so I just, I can't help it.

780

:

Or, well, this is how I'm wired.

781

:

This is the way, this is the way I

am, this is my personality, or this

782

:

is, this is the way, God, this is

the way my body works, or whatever.

783

:

We use our excuses to say,

well, it's not really that bad.

784

:

It's not my fault.

785

:

Still sin.

786

:

The only thing that can take away

your sin is when you go to Jesus

787

:

with it and ask him to pay for it.

788

:

God punishes sin.

789

:

He's either gonna punish Jesus for

it or he's gonna punish you for it.

790

:

So trust Jesus.

791

:

Say, God, I need you to take away my sin.

792

:

I can't get rid of it any other way.

793

:

Please forgive me because

of what Jesus did.

794

:

That's what gets you into heaven.

795

:

That's how God forgives sin.

796

:

But Matthew doesn't also just,

he doesn't want you to see that

797

:

Jesus is just a sacrificial lamb.

798

:

He also wants you to see

that Jesus is the king.

799

:

Right?

800

:

That was a big theme in,

in that chapter, right?

801

:

The high school boys are right now,

all the, all the times that, that

802

:

Jesus was painted out to be a king.

803

:

And so Matthew also wants you to

see that Jesus conquers through.

804

:

Suffering and death.

805

:

So our last point tonight is to

give King Jesus your allegiance.

806

:

Give him your loyalty.

807

:

Give him your life.

808

:

He deserves everything

and anything you can do.

809

:

So we've talked a lot about

Jesus upside down kingdom, right?

810

:

We've talked about how greatness

is, is through humility and serving

811

:

others and laying your life down.

812

:

Jesus becomes king the same way Jesus

becomes king through suffering and death.

813

:

That's how, that's how God

chooses to make Jesus the king,

814

:

to show that Jesus is the king.

815

:

Jesus at the cross.

816

:

He, he actually accomplished a lot, right?

817

:

He accomplished the

salvation of his people.

818

:

In the New Testament talks

about how Jesus disarmed Satan.

819

:

Satan can't do anything to you 'cause

the only thing Satan can do to get you to

820

:

hell is to not let your sins be forgiven.

821

:

But guess what?

822

:

You all could get your sins

forgiven if you trust Jesus.

823

:

No one can stop you from

doing that except you.

824

:

So Jesus won the salvation of his people.

825

:

He defeated Satan.

826

:

He defeated death.

827

:

He rose from the grave three days later.

828

:

We see that Jesus is

glorified by his father.

829

:

You ever remember that from John 17

when, when we were in John in main

830

:

service, that in that prayer that Jesus

does right before when in the upper

831

:

room, he says, father, glorify me,

Jesus is, he's lifted up on the cross.

832

:

It's says, if the cross is

his throne, he's the king.

833

:

He's a, he's conquering.

834

:

He's winning at the cross.

835

:

So he's living out all of his.

836

:

His teaching.

837

:

So this is, this is

God's picture of a king.

838

:

This is what God wants you to see.

839

:

This is King Jesus.

840

:

King Jesus beaten, bloody dying,

but conquering victorious.

841

:

That's God's king.

842

:

And so Jesus has, he has

authority over everything.

843

:

He's, he's, if he's really the king,

he has authority over everything.

844

:

He has authority over your relationships.

845

:

He has authority over your free time.

846

:

He has authority over your future.

847

:

He has authority over your homework,

your body, what you like, all your

848

:

stuff, your feelings, your words.

849

:

Jesus needs your obedience.

850

:

He's your king.

851

:

He's your Lord.

852

:

And I think sometimes even as

Christians, maybe we hold onto something.

853

:

Say, well, God, you can have

everything else but not this.

854

:

I really, you know, God, I really

wanted to do these things in

855

:

college, and if I don't get to

do these things, then I'm out.

856

:

Or, oh, God, as long as you

keep me relatively safe and

857

:

healthy, then I'll follow you.

858

:

We come up with all these conditions.

859

:

There's no conditions with the king.

860

:

He's either the king or he is not.

861

:

So tonight, I, I wanna ask

you, is Jesus your king?

862

:

Are you giving your

allegiance to King Jesus?

863

:

Are you trying to give him

part of your allegiance or

864

:

are you giving him everything?

865

:

Because if he's really your

king, he deserves everything.

866

:

You can't say, well, I'll give you this

part of my life and, and not this part.

867

:

Or I'll give you maybe these things.

868

:

But, but not that.

869

:

If he's the king, he deserves everything.

870

:

And, and if you're here and you've

never trusted Jesus, or maybe you're

871

:

here and you've only wanted to give

Jesus a little part of your life.

872

:

You, you could change that tonight

and, and follow the king who

873

:

loves you so much that he would be

crucified for you and die for you.

874

:

He gave everything for you.

875

:

It's not too big of an ask for

you to give everything for him.

876

:

Let's pray and we'll go to small groups.
