Speaker:

Hey, welcome back to another

edition of the Daily Bible Podcast.

2

:

Hey.

3

:

It's Monday spring break's over.

4

:

Kids are back in school.

5

:

Life is back to normal, at

least until the next break.

6

:

For most everybody.

7

:

Some people had spring break earlier

I was talking to, somebody this past

8

:

week whose kids were already done with

spring break and they were wrapped up

9

:

and back in school and everything else,

but yeah, Frisco's was a week before.

10

:

Yeah, we didn't touch on it, but we

had a great open house on Friday.

11

:

Quite a few stopped by.

12

:

So thank you guys for

stopping by if you came by.

13

:

We're grateful to have you here.

14

:

And excited to.

15

:

To continue to utilize the offices.

16

:

Yeah.

17

:

Thank you guys for showing up.

18

:

That was really special and it was

nice and even fun to have so much

19

:

energy in the room and to have people

laughing and celebrating with us.

20

:

It was an office warming that I think

was even better than what we thought.

21

:

We had expectations and we had

aspirations, but the actual

22

:

experiencing of it was way

cooler than what we anticipated.

23

:

So thank you for making that special.

24

:

For those of you who drop by.

25

:

And if you miss out, don't worry.

26

:

You could still drop by, there's just not

gonna be any cookies or things like that.

27

:

We'd love to have you show up and

we'd show you around or you can

28

:

wait until the next time we move,

which will be about two years.

29

:

So there's that too.

30

:

That's true.

31

:

That's true.

32

:

We might have an energy drink or

something like that in the fridge.

33

:

We could give you.

34

:

That's true.

35

:

But, yeah, we do.

36

:

Those people don't want those, though.

37

:

Those are powerful.

38

:

That's correct.

39

:

Yeah.

40

:

We do have some coffee.

41

:

Yeah.

42

:

Swing by them.

43

:

It'd be great.

44

:

And yeah we're done as of

yesterday with the disciple series.

45

:

We're getting ready to move into

a new series called The Gathering

46

:

Storm, which is on the, situation

leading up to the cross, which again

47

:

is a reminder of the Easter season

that we find ourselves in right now.

48

:

And so we're looking forward to some

nicer weather with that as well, which

49

:

is we're starting to experience this

some highs in the eighties and seventies.

50

:

It's nice out there.

51

:

Super windy though.

52

:

Super windy.

53

:

It's been we've had some dust storms

too recently, which have been.

54

:

On our, I haven't experienced

a dust storm in Texas before.

55

:

Arizona for sure.

56

:

Not out here though.

57

:

Global warming.

58

:

Yeah.

59

:

Ponder said must be what it is.

60

:

Ponder said that winter was over,

so I'm taking that to the bank.

61

:

He said springtime is in full effect.

62

:

Did he see a shadow?

63

:

I think he did.

64

:

I.

65

:

Yeah.

66

:

All right.

67

:

Hey, let's jump into

our Bible reading today.

68

:

We're continuing in

Joshua five through eight.

69

:

So 5, 6, 7, 8.

70

:

That's yeah, four chapters.

71

:

My, my brain works.

72

:

That's yeah, four chapters today.

73

:

We get into the promised land here

and and this is a situation that would

74

:

not have been fun to participate in

as an Israelite male at this time.

75

:

'cause in this chapter, the men who

hadn't been circumcised while in the

76

:

wilderness were gonna be circumcised.

77

:

They're in the Promised Land.

78

:

And that's gonna take place.

79

:

Israel's gonna celebrate her first

Passover in the promised land and Joshua's

80

:

gonna end up meeting the commander of

the Lord's army, who I take to be Jesus.

81

:

Because he worships him

and he's not corrected.

82

:

Anytime a, an angelic being is

worshiped, then typically that

83

:

angelic being says, Hey, what?

84

:

What are you doing?

85

:

You shouldn't be worshiping me.

86

:

But this angelic being is actually

the Lord I think is Christ and the

87

:

pre-incarnate Christ at least, and I

think that's who Joshua encounters here.

88

:

But yeah, during the wilderness wanderings

they didn't have I, maybe the means

89

:

or the wherewithal to carry out the

circumcisions in accordance with the law.

90

:

And so that had to wait until the

entrance to the promised land.

91

:

What's really notable in verse 12 is

that the manna ceased the day after

92

:

they ate of the produce of the land.

93

:

And what's cool about this is that

there's no gaps in God's provision.

94

:

He gives them exactly what they

need at exactly the right time.

95

:

Say what you will.

96

:

God is precise in the

delivery of his resources.

97

:

He's not before, and he is not after he.

98

:

He's given them exactly what they need.

99

:

In fact, even the idea of the manna,

they couldn't collect more than they

100

:

needed otherwise they went rotten.

101

:

And if they collect a lesson they

needed actually God provided for

102

:

those, even those shortcomings.

103

:

I think this is really cool.

104

:

This is a really sweet view of

how God interacts with his people.

105

:

Yeah, it is.

106

:

And and he still does that for us today.

107

:

We're just probably not as, as

mindful of it today as they would've

108

:

been because they would've had the

tangible expression of it there.

109

:

Chapter six, then here is Joshua

fitting the Battle of Jericho.

110

:

And this is the story that you

grew up with that you heard.

111

:

Here it is, it's laid out for

you in Joshua chapter six.

112

:

That's where this comes from.

113

:

Israel's gonna take Jericho and

it's gonna be an act of God.

114

:

And again why marching around the city?

115

:

Why blowing on the trumpets?

116

:

Why all of them shouting

is there some tactic?

117

:

Is there some tradition?

118

:

Is there something else going on here?

119

:

And I think at the end of the day,

this was God making it abundantly

120

:

clear to Israel that he was the one

accomplishing this, that he was the one

121

:

that was gonna do this for them because.

122

:

If they were to go around and

march around another city this

123

:

is the only time he does this.

124

:

To our knowledge, at least,

this is not how he takes any

125

:

other city in the promised land.

126

:

And so if they were to go do this at

the next town over, it wouldn't work.

127

:

And the reason being is God was doing

this to remind Israel from the very

128

:

outset, the first battle they're

gonna have, he's gonna do the victory.

129

:

He's gonna do the heavy lifting for them.

130

:

This is not gonna be based on

their might and their power.

131

:

I think it's fascinating that

God utilizes different means

132

:

to accomplish his purposes.

133

:

And here he had the march and it is

weird, but I think this is important

134

:

for us to notice and it's that God uses

means he decided to have them participate

135

:

in what he would do with that city.

136

:

So as you mentioned in the last podcast,

he's just not saying, Hey, I'm gonna

137

:

send, I'm gonna send a certain spiritual.

138

:

Contingency to the people and

have them destroy them for you.

139

:

I'm gonna have you do something

and I, and increasingly so this

140

:

is gonna be the case for them.

141

:

They're gonna have to

go in and take the land.

142

:

And this is an example of that.

143

:

He's saying, I want you to go and do

these certain things, and it's gonna

144

:

be weird and unusual and perhaps

a very strange military strategy.

145

:

But the point is, God's the one

who's doing it and he's commanding

146

:

them to participate in it.

147

:

That's not too different

from what he has us do today.

148

:

He.

149

:

Commands us to do things, but we

are definitely participating in

150

:

the work that he calls us to do.

151

:

It feels like that.

152

:

Sure.

153

:

Has that sense of, man, I, I'm working

hard when I read my Bible and I pray,

154

:

but God's the one who's empowering

us, but he's calling us to join with

155

:

him and participate in the work.

156

:

That's a really a really important feature

of our walk with Christ and it's that we.

157

:

Play a role God uses means,

and often we are those means.

158

:

Yeah.

159

:

And that's Philippians, right?

160

:

That's says, Paul writes, work

out your salvation with fear and

161

:

trembling, knowing that it's God

who's at work within you, but the

162

:

will to work for his good pleasure.

163

:

Philippians two is is indicative of that

same principle there, chapter seven.

164

:

Then we get into the aftermath

of this and this again, this

165

:

would've been a huge victory.

166

:

Everybody's excited.

167

:

There's a spirit of.

168

:

A palpable just fervor in the camp going,

this is it, we're here, we're doing this.

169

:

And yet part of the command of

Israel with Jericho was everything

170

:

was to be devoted to destruction.

171

:

They weren't to keep

anything for themselves.

172

:

And in Joshua chapter

seven, we find out that.

173

:

Somebody.

174

:

Somebody didn't go that way.

175

:

Somebody didn't do the right thing.

176

:

And the way they find that out is

they go to battle against AI and ai.

177

:

They think this is gonna be no big deal.

178

:

They send a smaller force there,

they're routed, and then God reveals

179

:

that somebody has taken something out

of Joshua or out of Jo, out of Jericho

180

:

that was devoted to destruction.

181

:

Find out that it's.

182

:

Aiken who has stolen the thing.

183

:

And I think what's, what jumped out to me

this time is just noticing that this was,

184

:

the sin was not just taking the thing the

sin, the root of the sin was coveting.

185

:

And it says that in the text

there that he saw and he coveted

186

:

it and he wanted it for himself.

187

:

Something that wasn't his, something

that didn't belong to him, that

188

:

he said, man, that's what I want.

189

:

And that's the evil.

190

:

It's saying I'm gonna take these

things because I want them and I

191

:

think they're gonna make me happy,

more happy than obeying the Lord.

192

:

And that's the insidious nature of sin

today too, is that it lies to us and

193

:

says, this is gonna make you more happy

to do this than to obey the Lord in this.

194

:

And that's what.

195

:

Ends up happening.

196

:

It's called an outrageous thing.

197

:

It literally, it's the

word that means stupid.

198

:

In verse 15, 7 15.

199

:

There he says, he has done an

outrageous thing, a stupid thing, a

200

:

foolish thing in Israel there, and

again, verse 21, there's the line.

201

:

Then I coveted them and I took them, and

so God punishes because of the sin of

202

:

Aiken and they lose this battle in ai.

203

:

Aiken has to be judged along

with this whole family.

204

:

We've made the point before pr, and it

probably fits here too, that we don't know

205

:

the ages of these children or his wife

and whether or not they were complicit.

206

:

In his actions here.

207

:

We know that God is a God of

justice, and we've talked about

208

:

that lately on the podcast as well.

209

:

So whatever was the circumstance here,

this punishment may at its at first

210

:

glance, seem harsh to us, but we also

have to remember God is just, and

211

:

we don't have all the details here.

212

:

One thing to note too is that his wife

actually isn't mentioned, which is

213

:

why I suspect either A, she's not in

the picture for whatever reason, she's

214

:

not alive, or B, she wasn't complicit.

215

:

Where I could suspect that her sons and

daughters would perhaps be part of that

216

:

because they're in this and everyone

else, or at least his wife again, is

217

:

not, which is a pretty glaring omission.

218

:

So it doesn't tell us exactly

that's what took place, but that,

219

:

that reinforces my thinking that

he and his kids were complicit.

220

:

They worked together to do these things.

221

:

I wanna make one more note here,

and it's that there's a tainting

222

:

effect of sin from even just one.

223

:

Person or one family as the case may be.

224

:

That affects the whole

group, the whole people.

225

:

And I think there is a similar kind of

parallel to the church, although it's

226

:

not a one-to-one or different, but

there is something to be said about

227

:

when someone is engaging in sin, secret

sin, even if we think we're containing

228

:

it, it has an impact and everybody

else around there is a contaminating

229

:

effect to sin within the camp.

230

:

And you would do well.

231

:

All of us would do well to guard our

hearts against this kind of sin and

232

:

to disallow that from our lives so

that we're not bringing it into to,

233

:

to contaminate other people around us.

234

:

There is a kind of holiness that God

calls us to and the church thrives

235

:

when she's holy, chapter eight.

236

:

Then after this is taken care of and

the sin is put outta the camp, God is

237

:

going to to the point that you were

just making Pastor Rod honor the.

238

:

Israelites at this point in their

efforts, in their reversal of

239

:

things, and now they're gonna obey.

240

:

And he says to Joshua, right off the

bat, there in eight one, do not fear.

241

:

Do not be dismayed.

242

:

Things have been taken care of.

243

:

We've dealt with this.

244

:

Now let's move forward.

245

:

And so they go back after ai and this

time they're gonna get victory here.

246

:

And the Lord promises to give AI into

the hand of Joshua, but Joshua still to

247

:

plan and execute the military strategy.

248

:

And that's worth noting too here.

249

:

So God says you're gonna.

250

:

I'm gonna give them into your

hand, and yet Joshua still says,

251

:

okay, here's what we're gonna do.

252

:

Some of us are gonna go forward, we're

gonna have the other lion weights,

253

:

we're gonna lure them out, and then

go in and take the city and just

254

:

good leadership here from Joshua.

255

:

Joshua puts himself on

the front lines there.

256

:

He doesn't put himself in the ambush.

257

:

Squad.

258

:

He doesn't put himself back in the

camp with the women and children.

259

:

He's out there leading his people

and he's he's part of the ones

260

:

that are the bait, so to speak,

for the inhabitants of AI there.

261

:

And they win a victory.

262

:

But they have to, to what we

were just talking about earlier,

263

:

it's them working with the Lord

in accomplishing this victory.

264

:

I.

265

:

Yeah, I love this manly tactic.

266

:

Here he goes first, he's leading the

way, and I love that the last words

267

:

in Joshua chapter eight is that there

was not a word of all that Moses

268

:

commanded, that Joshua did not read

before all the assembly of Israel.

269

:

Joshua is not only a man of bravery

and strength as he was encouraged to

270

:

be, but he's also a man of the word.

271

:

He's reading it, he's

doing his duty to read it.

272

:

He's also attempting to fulfill it.

273

:

So there's everything commendable

about Joshua, at least in this

274

:

particular chapter of his book.

275

:

I, I love this because of.

276

:

All the lessons that you

can derive from his life.

277

:

Yeah.

278

:

Joshua's not a guy with a lot of faults

that we find at least not written.

279

:

Not written down.

280

:

Yeah.

281

:

Which is which is good.

282

:

It's encouraging.

283

:

Lemme pray and then we'll be

done with another episode.

284

:

Shorter episode.

285

:

But hey, we'll be.

286

:

We'll be brief when we can.

287

:

God, we thank you for your word.

288

:

We want to be men like Joshua.

289

:

We wanna be a church

that's faithful to you.

290

:

We don't want sin in the camp, and so

help us to have that mentality and that

291

:

attitude We pray in Jesus' name, amen.

292

:

Amen.

293

:

Keep in your Bibles.
