In this episode of the Elemental Evan podcast, host Evan emphasizes the importance of not over-complicating health by returning to basic, daily practices rather than relying heavily on supplements or the latest health tech. He discusses how simple lifestyle changes in areas such as diet, sleep, movement, and relationships can make a significant impact on overall health.
Evan shares his personal experiences with reducing supplement intake in favor of whole food-based products like spirulina and chlorella, and the profound benefits he's noticed from focusing on improving sleep quality and incorporating regular movement into his routine.
The episode challenges the notion that achieving good health requires expensive products or supplements, advocating instead for foundational habits that support well-being.

:Welcome to the elemental Ivan podcast.
3
:This is your host, Evan Roberts on this
show, I break down health topics from
4
:a simplified and holistic perspective
so that you can walk away from each
5
:episode with some tools in your belt.
6
:That way you can actually apply
some of the knowledge from
7
:these episodes to your life.
8
:And on today's episode, we're going
to be talking about how to not.
9
:Over-complicate health because
it definitely seems like it's
10
:a really easy thing to do.
11
:We can see too many opposing views
on health and, you know, there's all
12
:this new health tech gear coming out
and, you know, the newest supplements
13
:and all these different things.
14
:When I think it's really important
for us to realize that health is.
15
:You know, pretty much just
going back to the basics is
16
:going to be the most beneficial.
17
:Um, and don't get me wrong.
18
:I get caught up in this all the time.
19
:Um, being that I'm pretty big into the
health field and, uh, I love to see
20
:all the new stuff that's coming out.
21
:It's easy for me to get really
sucked up in, you know, the newest
22
:supplement or tech gear for, you
know, fill in the blank basically.
23
:And, uh, yeah, it's super
easy to fall into that ended
24
:up spending a bunch of money.
25
:And of course it might
be great for you, but.
26
:Really at the end of the day, a lot of
the health practices that are going to
27
:have the biggest effect on your health.
28
:Are going to be the things that
you can do on a daily basis.
29
:And I think it's really important
for us to always remember
30
:that and to not get too.
31
:You know, Too absorbed in all of
the new stuff that's coming out.
32
:Now, of course there are certain
supplements that truly can make a pretty
33
:big difference for someone, especially
if they have a very targeted goal.
34
:We can think of things like brain
health and lion's mane mushroom, for
35
:example, like that's definitely going
to help, but at the end of the day,
36
:really, if we just focus on the basics,
that's going to be the biggest thing.
37
:So what are the basics?
38
:The basics are things like good food.
39
:Good.
40
:Sleep good movement.
41
:Good relationships.
42
:These are going to be some of the
biggest things that we can do, right?
43
:Our lifestyle practices are going to
have the biggest effect on our health.
44
:Uh, because we do them every single day.
45
:Right?
46
:, you have habits that you build and
those habits are going to be far
47
:more effective than anything else.
48
:In my opinion.
49
:And typically with my supplements.
50
:Um, a while ago, I tried to
decrease the amount of supplements
51
:that I was actually taking.
52
:I tried to narrow them down to primarily
like food-based supplements was my goal.
53
:Um, there's a couple of things that
maybe aren't exactly food-based
54
:supplements, but, you know, I take
things like spirulina and chlorella.
55
:It's like one of the biggest things
that I take on a, on a common
56
:basis and that's just micro algae.
57
:Um, Organifi, I take some of
their green juices as well.
58
:Lion's mane, it's literally a mushroom.
59
:So these are like typically
whole food based products.
60
:Um, with probably the one that I
feel like I enjoy the most and I
61
:take the most is the spirulina
and chlorella from energy bits.
62
:That's typically one of my favorites
just because it's like in a
63
:way, almost like a multivitamin.
64
:So.
65
:It's usually one of the ones that I
really usually stick with, um, by the
66
:way, check them out during the show
notes or the description and you get
67
:20% discount, um, love energy bits, but
typically that's the main one that I take.
68
:And aside from that, I try to just
really focus on being as intentional
69
:with my habits as possible.
70
:So, you know, one of the biggest or.
71
:There's actually a, sorry, there's
a lot of big things that we can do,
72
:but one of the biggest ones that
I've noticed recently, I should, I
73
:should say is I've really focused
on my sleep lately and it has been.
74
:Such an absolute game changer.
75
:So I get up at five o'clock every day,
typically, um, with the exception of
76
:a few days out throughout the week.
77
:And so, you know, it's a relatively early
wake up time, which means that I do have
78
:to get to bed at a decent time as well.
79
:Right.
80
:Like I typically try to shoot for
being in bed somewhere between
81
:nine and nine 30, if I can.
82
:Um, but I'm not going to lie
that doesn't always happen.
83
:Uh there's times where it's 10
30 or 11 o'clock before I'm in
84
:bed, which is just honestly not
enough time for me personally,
85
:to get in a really solid sleep.
86
:So I've focused here recently
on getting to bed earlier.
87
:I'm also, I've also been really.
88
:Really religious with my mouth taping,
which has been super beneficial.
89
:Um, I've also included a little bit
of magnesium to help with my sleep.
90
:. And the sleep has been incredible.
91
:And I wake up feeling.
92
:So rested and ready to take on the day.
93
:And it helps with everything.
94
:It helps with my energy levels.
95
:It helps with my cognition.
96
:So I'm.
97
:Honestly, I just feel sharp as attack,
like much more on top of things.
98
:And, uh, yeah, sleep has
been incredible lately.
99
:Um, for some, for me to focus on.
100
:And then aside from that,
you know, movement has been
101
:really beneficial as well.
102
:I've been including, uh, more of
a movement practice throughout my
103
:week, three to four times a week.
104
:And that has been really beneficial as
well, , in my mood, in my productivity.
105
:And honestly, just my
overall way that I feel.
106
:So those have been really huge
food has always been something
107
:that I've been pretty focused on.
108
:So I wouldn't say there's been a
massive change in that for me, but.
109
:Nonetheless, these are the basics.
110
:These are the fundamentals.
111
:And then also having good relationships.
112
:I don't want to exclude that one.
113
:That one is very important.
114
:, at least for longevity.
115
:And honestly, I think quality
of life , relationships play
116
:a big role in that as well.
117
:So those are the core things
that really we need to focus on.
118
:And honestly, these are the things
that I tell myself when I see
119
:myself like adding things to a cart.
120
:And it's, you know, starting to
add up a couple hundred dollars.
121
:Like, oh my God.
122
:Like, am I really gonna drop
all this money right now?
123
:And sometimes I'll just think to myself.
124
:Okay, look.
125
:What am I trying to fix here?
126
:And how can I, you know, adjust the
lifestyle and habits that I already
127
:have to try to support that better.
128
:And I'll usually go that method first.
129
:And, uh, there's so much benefit.
130
:Every time I focus on any of these
categories, whether it be sleep
131
:food movement, or relationships.
132
:Something in my life gets
better, like for sure.
133
:Um, And it helps out in
so many different ways.
134
:I would definitely say
though, sleep and movement.
135
:Those have been the two things I've
been focusing on lately and they've
136
:been absolutely game changer.
137
:I feel really, really good.
138
:Having focused on both of those.
139
:But there's so much that we can
do without spending any money.
140
:And it can really benefit us greatly.
141
:So I don't like it when people think
that like, food is, or sorry, not food,
142
:but like health and being healthy is
kind of this, like, I don't know, , hi
143
:class only reserved type thing.
144
:Like I'm not high class.
145
:At least not when it comes to
like money or anything like that.
146
:So.
147
:Uh, no, honestly, I'm not high
class on, I'm like straight
148
:up Neanderthal over here.
149
:But honestly, um, I think it's ridiculous
when, when we look at it that way, and I
150
:think people have that idea because when
you see organic food being more expensive
151
:and you see all these supplements and
you know, the different gadgets that
152
:you can buy for your health, like, it
definitely feels like it can be very
153
:exclusive, but it shouldn't be that way.
154
:Good health is available to everybody.
155
:It just requires a little bit of
know-how and some knowledge on, you
156
:know, things that we can do to become
more healthy in our day-to-day life.
157
:And so.
158
:Just wanting to re highlight
that to everybody that you
159
:don't need a supplement.
160
:You don't have to take a supplement.
161
:Um, you can obtain so much through your
daily practices and I think supplements
162
:should really actually come second.
163
:Like after you have updated your habits
and your lifestyle, then you can look into
164
:supplements and allow them to kind of.
165
:Working cohesion with.
166
:You know, your actual lifestyle
practices, but I don't think
167
:they should be the first go-to.
168
:So even for example, like I was
mentioning spirulina and chlorella.
169
:I love spirulina and chlorella.
170
:The energy bit stuff is amazing.
171
:Like it's one of my favorite
supplements that I ever.
172
:I literally take daily, but if, for
example, I was not eating a healthy diet.
173
:Like I can't just rely on the spirulina.
174
:With, you know, okay.
175
:Yeah.
176
:It has 40 vitamins and minerals in it,
but if I'm just relying on the spirulina,
177
:like that's not, not the way to go.
178
:Like I have to have a good diet.
179
:And then that spirulina is going to,
you know, combined with a good diet
180
:is going to make sure that I'm really
covering all of my bases and getting
181
:the nutrients that I actually need.
182
:I can't just rely on spirulina.
183
:Like I take spirulina one time in
the morning and as many vitamins and
184
:minerals as it may have, it's not
going to make up for a poor diet.
185
:So we really have to focus on these basics
first, even with sleep, for example.
186
:You know, I mentioned magnesium, magnesium
can help with sleep and it definitely
187
:seems to benefit my sleep, but I've also
had really, really good sleeps when I
188
:just made sure that I wasn't watching TV,
like right up to the minute that I went
189
:to bed and I didn't have a meal, you know?
190
:Uh, two hours before going to bed.
191
:And I took a nice hot shower and
did a nighttime routine to kind
192
:of get myself prepared for bed.
193
:And then, you know, I get into bed and,
uh, give myself enough time to sleep
194
:before I have to wake up and guess what?
195
:I have an incredible sleep and
I wake up feeling like a million
196
:dollars and I did it without any.
197
:Supplements or spending of money at all.
198
:Right.
199
:It was just good health practices.
200
:And I think that's like literally the
most important thing for us to focus on
201
:and it falls into all categories we can
think of even like movement, for example.
202
:When it comes to movement.
203
:Uh, people are so focused on taking
all these different supplements to.
204
:You know, gain muscle and this
and that, and blah, blah, blah.
205
:And sure.
206
:Of course like taking creatine and taking
essential aminos and protein, like all
207
:of that is going to help, but you know,
what is at the core of that is actually
208
:getting the movement in, like, you can't
just take the supplements and get buffed.
209
:Like you actually got to do the movement
and then the movement, even if you just
210
:paired movement with a good diet that
had high protein in it, That's going to
211
:be super beneficial right there and the
additional protein shakes or essential
212
:amino acids, they're going to be great.
213
:And they're going to also maybe
put you over the top and really
214
:get you to that next level.
215
:But at the core of it, it really
just starts with good habits.
216
:So.
217
:Anyways, that's what I
really wanted to focus on.
218
:I feel like everyone over-complicates
health myself included.
219
:I start falling into the trap of
like, there's something externally
220
:that I need to be taking to
help me be better at something.
221
:And really at the core of it, we have
pretty much everything we need internally.
222
:You know, we can do these practices and
habits and, um, you know, really just
223
:live a super healthy lifestyle without
having to spend a ton of money and looking
224
:for external things to make us better.
225
:Um, it all starts with ourselves and
just creating really good habits.
226
:So.
227
:Anyways, I just want to
highlight that point.
228
:It was something I saw myself
getting caught up in, uh, just
229
:about a week ago, actually.
230
:And then, um, I really had to
reevaluate and look at things
231
:and say, hold up, hold up.
232
:Like, what are the core
principles of health here?
233
:And, you know, it comes back to
these core habits and our lifestyle
234
:practices that we have that really
makes the biggest impact on our health.
235
:So anyways, I just wanted to mention
that everybody, and I hope that you
236
:guys all have some really great.
237
:Uh, health practices.
238
:Uh, you know, lifestyle practices
and, um, you know, Start there.
239
:That's always the place to start before
you take any supplement, start there.
240
:Check.
241
:How are you eating?
242
:How are you sleeping?
243
:Uh, are you moving enough?
244
:Do you have good relationships?
245
:Um, you know, are you getting sunlight?
246
:Are you staying hydrated?
247
:Like all these different things?
248
:They're going to make
the biggest impact first.
249
:And then we can go from there.
250
:So.
251
:Anyways, y'all I hope you guys enjoyed
this episode and found some benefit in it.
252
:Don't overcomplicate health.
253
:It's much more simple than we think.
254
:And, uh, yeah, so anyways, I hope you
all have a great rest of your week.
255
:I'll see you on next week's episode.
256
:And until then do everything with
good intentions, connect to the
257
:elements and much love y'all peace.
