Welcome to Podcast Done For You,
Speaker:the show where we make it as easy
Speaker:as possible for you to make the
Speaker:right choices to advance your
Speaker:podcasting career.
Speaker:So let's get started on the show.
Speaker:Is a podcast right for me?
Speaker:I don't know how to grow an audience.
Speaker:These are the things that I get
Speaker:asked all the time.
Speaker:I get it.
Speaker:You don't know how to grow an audience,
Speaker:so therefore, why would you bother
Speaker:with a podcast?
Speaker:Well, we're going to deconstruct
Speaker:and reconstruct all of that in
Speaker:this episode.
Speaker:We're gonna give you in a context
Speaker:and some easy steps on how to
Speaker:build an audience.
Speaker:You don't want it to be overwhelming.
Speaker:We want… don't want it to be
Speaker:painful either.
Speaker:I wanna make sure that you are going
Speaker:to be focused on what you love
Speaker:talking about, and we'll talk about why
Speaker:a podcast is a great opportunity for you.
Speaker:But I want to make sure that
Speaker:you get a whole heap out of this
Speaker:particular episode.
Speaker:Pl- so please stay tuned to the end,
Speaker:because there are lots of important
Speaker:points about how to build an audience
Speaker:and why it is so critical for your
Speaker:business, and how the podcast
Speaker:just fits in as the answer to
Speaker:that problem.
Speaker:Okay.
Speaker:But before we can get into all of
Speaker:that, gotta ask why you're here.
Speaker:Why are you considering a
Speaker:podcast in the first place?
Speaker:I mean, what made you tune in
Speaker:to this point?
Speaker:Leave us a message in the chat.
Speaker:I'd love to hear from you.
Speaker:Or send me a direct message.
Speaker:I know many of you prefer to do that,
Speaker:and you can reach me on LinkedIn or any
Speaker:number of places, and there's details
Speaker:in the show notes below for you to
Speaker:be able to do that.
Speaker:But let me just say, I think the
Speaker:reason why most of you are here
Speaker:is there are three common problems
Speaker:that businesses face all the time.
Speaker:You're not being seen as the
Speaker:expert, and your competitors are.
Speaker:So that is a problem, right?
Speaker:You need to be seen as the expert.
Speaker:You need to get in front of the
Speaker:competition.
Speaker:Second problem, time spent on building
Speaker:your profile and taking you away from
Speaker:what you love doing.
Speaker:I know, I hear it all the time.
Speaker:How much time are you spending on just
Speaker:putting out LinkedIn posts every week,
Speaker:let alone doing Facebook, Instagram,
Speaker:any number of other platforms you're
Speaker:on, before you even consider YouTube?
Speaker:And don't forget your, your
Speaker:newsletter.
Speaker:Don't forget your blog.
Speaker:Don't forget all of those other things.
Speaker:It's exhausting, right?
Speaker:Well, the amount of time that's being
Speaker:spent on that, that's another
Speaker:reason for you to be thinking about a
Speaker:podcast because it's not an additional
Speaker:add-on to your time.
Speaker:In fact, it can be the opposite, where
Speaker:it can take time off your schedule.
Speaker:We'll get into all of that a little
Speaker:bit later because that is not the main
Speaker:thing here today.
Speaker:But I do want to say this, the third
Speaker:problem, which is super critical,
Speaker:that I implore you to think about why
Speaker:a podcast creates opportunities,
Speaker:and why, most importantly,
Speaker:audience growth is actually not what
Speaker:you think it is, and it is not that
Speaker:difficult, is when you say there are
Speaker:not enough growth opportunities in
Speaker:your business.
Speaker:Do not confuse audience growth
Speaker:and listening to a podcast versus
Speaker:opportunities for you to grow
Speaker:your business.
Speaker:We get sucked in by the numbers.
Speaker:So here's the first really
Speaker:critical thing that I wanna say.
Speaker:When you answer this question, that is,
Speaker:"I don't know how to grow an audience,"
Speaker:why are you focusing on that as being
Speaker:the problem?
Speaker:See, here's the thing
Speaker:If I could sit you in front of
Speaker:a thousand people tomorrow, but none
Speaker:of them were your right audience,
Speaker:or it might be hit and miss as
Speaker:to whether there are any in there,
Speaker:versus I'm gonna introduce you to
Speaker:two or three people who absolutely are
Speaker:your right audience, which is the better
Speaker:opportunity for you?
Speaker:So why are you thinking about
Speaker:the mass audience?
Speaker:Don't let that be an obstacle for
Speaker:you in creating the podcast.
Speaker:So, we've got a whole lot of
Speaker:episodes out there already that talk
Speaker:about, you know, why a podcast is so
Speaker:great for you, and the benefits to you.
Speaker:But the audience growth bit is the
Speaker:bit that I wanna focus on today,
Speaker:because it shouldn't be a chore.
Speaker:Let's go through five important
Speaker:points when it comes to the idea of
Speaker:audience building, and I just touched
Speaker:on a f- on one of them there.
Speaker:You want to be in front of the
Speaker:right people, so you have to choose
Speaker:who you talk to, and who you send
Speaker:messages to, and do you really need
Speaker:that mass audience?
Speaker:Well, I would say that the
Speaker:answer is no.
Speaker:You see, if you want to buy a
Speaker:mass audience, you can do that
Speaker:in lots of ways.
Speaker:Like, there are lists out there.
Speaker:There's lots of different ways
Speaker:that you can use advertising, but
Speaker:it is hit and miss.
Speaker:The great thing about the podcast
Speaker:is that it is a conversation with
Speaker:your audience.
Speaker:What that means is that you are sharing
Speaker:your stories and your insights, and
Speaker:putting yourself out there in a
Speaker:way that people then get to know
Speaker:you and understand who you are and
Speaker:what you're about.
Speaker:That draws the right people towards
Speaker:you, and eliminates the wrong people,
Speaker:and that's okay.
Speaker:You want the wrong people to be turned
Speaker:away, 'cause you don't want to
Speaker:waste your time.
Speaker:So reaching the right people in
Speaker:building your audience is not
Speaker:about the mass numbers, it's about
Speaker:how you use it.
Speaker:So for example, you can use individual
Speaker:episodes of a podcast to direct
Speaker:message people about it, but you can also
Speaker:very much target an episode to be
Speaker:about the things that are critical
Speaker:to the audience that you're trying
Speaker:to engage with.
Speaker:So that's point number one.
Speaker:The second point, be there.
Speaker:For all of your audience to grow,
Speaker:you just need to be there.
Speaker:Sounds simple, but I know this
Speaker:is the bit where the time-consuming
Speaker:overwhelm comes in for most people.
Speaker:Be there is exhausting when you
Speaker:think about just the social media
Speaker:platforms alone.
Speaker:I mean, LinkedIn three times a
Speaker:week, Facebook, Instagram, uh,
Speaker:don't forget about Google My Business
Speaker:every now and then.
Speaker:Don't forget about maybe
Speaker:considering Reddit.
Speaker:What about Twitter and X before you
Speaker:start getting into TikTok, Snapchat,
Speaker:any of those other platforms.
Speaker:And then, of course, you've got YouTube,
Speaker:the second-largest search engine in the
Speaker:world behind Google.
Speaker:You've then got other places to
Speaker:consider even within YouTube,
Speaker:like it's not just the podcast, it's
Speaker:about the reels and the social
Speaker:elements in there.
Speaker:There are so many things to think
Speaker:about, and it is overwhelming
Speaker:to be there.
Speaker:But the reality is that we're
Speaker:in a world where people grab their
Speaker:media from lots of different sources
Speaker:at whatever time suits them in
Speaker:whatever way they want to grab them.
Speaker:You have to be there, but it
Speaker:doesn't need to be exhausting.
Speaker:Here's the thing, that the podcast,
Speaker:once you have, uh, had that
Speaker:conversation that creates the podcast
Speaker:episode, talking to the things
Speaker:that matter to your audience per
Speaker:point one Turning that into content
Speaker:that goes into all of those places
Speaker:we're talking about is easy.
Speaker:I'm gonna share some examples of that a
Speaker:little bit later on.
Speaker:I wanna get into the other points,
Speaker:because I think it's really important
Speaker:that we go through these and understand
Speaker:how building an audience is not
Speaker:actually difficult.
Speaker:Because the first thing I'm saying
Speaker:to you here is, per point one and two,
Speaker:is it's actually easier to be
Speaker:everywhere, because once you have the
Speaker:podcast recorded, creating that other
Speaker:content, content I should say, easy.
Speaker:The next part is you get to engage
Speaker:personally, and on a social- on a s-
Speaker:on socials aside from your posts.
Speaker:That's part of the process in
Speaker:audience building.
Speaker:Now, that can seem overwhelming, but
Speaker:it's not really.
Speaker:If you choose two, three, maybe five
Speaker:people maximum per day that you're
Speaker:going to try and have an actual
Speaker:conversation with and reach out to
Speaker:them, it's not a huge amount.
Speaker:I mean, let's face it, in the not far
Speaker:past, that's what you were doing on a
Speaker:very practical way.
Speaker:You'd go to a, whether it was
Speaker:to a networking event, or whether
Speaker:you'd be ringing people up and going
Speaker:have a coffee with them, and maybe
Speaker:you still do that kind of stuff.
Speaker:Well, engaging personally in
Speaker:your socials, and utilizing your
Speaker:podcast as a link to be able to have
Speaker:those conversations, "What did you think
Speaker:of that episode?"
Speaker:Maybe, "I'm thinking of getting you on
Speaker:the next episode. I'm interested in
Speaker:your feedback so I can plan another
Speaker:episode. They don't have to be on it."
Speaker:All of those kinds of conversations are
Speaker:really worthwhile having with your
Speaker:audience It provides an opportunity
Speaker:as well because then they're going
Speaker:and seeing you.
Speaker:'Cause it's actually not always about
Speaker:whether they respond or not, it's often
Speaker:just about, "Oh, who is this guy
Speaker:that's sending me a message? Great,
Speaker:let's look up their profile." Now,
Speaker:bang, we see what they do, and we
Speaker:can see that they are a podcast host.
Speaker:Make sure you put that in your
Speaker:profile when you've got a podcast.
Speaker:And once you're doing that, people
Speaker:will tune in and listen to you
Speaker:without you having had the conversation
Speaker:with them in any great detail.
Speaker:The second part, the second part to
Speaker:that process, which is point four here
Speaker:really, is about the relationship
Speaker:builder.
Speaker:It's the intent of the podcast.
Speaker:See, here's the thing, that building
Speaker:an audience is not that difficult if
Speaker:you're not focused on it being a mass
Speaker:number, if you're focused on the idea
Speaker:that it's building a relationship.
Speaker:The one thing I learnt many years
Speaker:ago in working in radio and building
Speaker:very large audiences in talkback radio,
Speaker:it's very simple.
Speaker:Pretend you're having a
Speaker:conversation with one person, and if
Speaker:that one person on the other end is
Speaker:nodding their head and saying they're
Speaker:talking to me, then they are the
Speaker:potential client.
Speaker:And so long as you give them some
Speaker:action steps to take when they are
Speaker:ready, and that's the important point,
Speaker:when they are ready, then they will
Speaker:take those steps.
Speaker:You are deepening the relationship
Speaker:with people.
Speaker:And remember, this is not just about
Speaker:relationships with new people,
Speaker:it's with existing people, people
Speaker:who don't know the full value
Speaker:that you offer.
Speaker:That includes your clients.
Speaker:Your clients know you do this much
Speaker:because that's what you do for them.
Speaker:They don't know about the other
Speaker:things that you do, so this deepens
Speaker:the relationship with them.
Speaker:Remember as well that more often
Speaker:than not, that the clients you're
Speaker:dealing with, you're dealing with one or
Speaker:two representatives from that business.
Speaker:You're not dealing with all of the
Speaker:people connected in that business,
Speaker:whether it's all the staff, whether it's
Speaker:their suppliers, whether it's their
Speaker:life partners.
Speaker:All of those people can matter
Speaker:in different ways depending
Speaker:on your business.
Speaker:You're deepening the relationship
Speaker:by having a podcast that is easy for
Speaker:them to listen to.
Speaker:And that goes into point five here,
Speaker:which is really important one as
Speaker:far as building the audience is
Speaker:concerned, is that you're not just
Speaker:building it with your existing one,
Speaker:and building it with potential new
Speaker:ones just generally by putting stuff
Speaker:out there on your socials, but it's
Speaker:also about you being very much
Speaker:more shareable, much more referable,
Speaker:because of exactly what I just said
Speaker:a moment ago.
Speaker:That you build those relationships.
Speaker:It's much easier then for people to
Speaker:have conversations, "Hey, you should
Speaker:check out this podcast. It's really
Speaker:interesting." And once you check
Speaker:out that podcast, well, there are…
Speaker:It becomes easier for them to go
Speaker:decide whether you're someone they
Speaker:want to work with.
Speaker:It's much easier for me to say, "Hey,
Speaker:you should check out this podcast,"
Speaker:than, "Go and talk to this person
Speaker:about the service that they offer."
Speaker:So, all of these things are really
Speaker:different ways of thinking about
Speaker:audience building, because it is very
Speaker:much about building with intent.
Speaker:That's what you want, is
Speaker:an intentional audience.
Speaker:Don't be fooled by the idea that this
Speaker:is just about, wow, I've got to get a
Speaker:mass of numbers.
Speaker:I said it at the beginning and I'm
Speaker:saying it again because it is so
Speaker:relevant for you to think about.
Speaker:Don't be caught up by that.
Speaker:It's about quality rather
Speaker:than quantity.
Speaker:So… Oops.
Speaker:So, you're building an intentional
Speaker:audience, and the podcast unlocks the
Speaker:opportunity for you to be everywhere,
Speaker:taking the pain points of your
Speaker:audience… So it should say talking
Speaker:to the pain points of your audience
Speaker:through stories and insights.
Speaker:That's the key here.
Speaker:If you are sharing stories and insights
Speaker:along the way, and it's talking
Speaker:to the pain that your audience is
Speaker:feeling, happy days, they're going
Speaker:to be relatable.
Speaker:And let me give you a story right now
Speaker:I had a conversation just earlier today
Speaker:with one of my podcast clients
Speaker:talking about exactly this issue,
Speaker:that some of their podcasts are a
Speaker:little bit too high level for the people
Speaker:that we are talking, trying to talk to
Speaker:and engage with.
Speaker:So we're gonna pare it back and
Speaker:dumb it down to the real pain points,
Speaker:because they're not necessarily
Speaker:thinking about the language that is
Speaker:being used all the time that you might
Speaker:be familiar with in your business.
Speaker:It's about talking to what
Speaker:the real pain is.
Speaker:It's a bit like using this
Speaker:analogy, right?
Speaker:It's difficult to talk to people about
Speaker:you should go out and buy a new car.
Speaker:It's much easier to talk to them
Speaker:about the idea, well, you need to
Speaker:get to A and from A to B on a regular
Speaker:basis, and getting from A to B on a
Speaker:regular basis needs to be efficient.
Speaker:It might need to be environmentally
Speaker:friendly.
Speaker:There might be, you know, might be
Speaker:able to better cope with your kids and
Speaker:whatever else that you're doing This
Speaker:particular vehicle is the solution to
Speaker:that problem, as opposed to, "You
Speaker:should just buy a shiny new car."
Speaker:Talk to the problem.
Speaker:The problem is the car at the moment is
Speaker:not very efficient.
Speaker:The car at the moment is not
Speaker:environmentally friendly.
Speaker:The car at the moment is not big
Speaker:enough for your growing family.
Speaker:The car at the moment doesn't allow
Speaker:you to go off-road.
Speaker:Whatever it might be, those are the
Speaker:things that you need to embrace.
Speaker:Okay.
Speaker:So once you start sharing stories
Speaker:about who you are and how you solve
Speaker:the problems for certain people,
Speaker:then you start being able to grow
Speaker:your audience.
Speaker:Let me share a couple of other
Speaker:stories with you because I
Speaker:want to- you to understand the
Speaker:differences here.
Speaker:So for those of you that might
Speaker:have heard or seen the IO Insolvency
Speaker:Options podcast with Darren Vardy,
Speaker:it's about people who are wanting
Speaker:to know more about the liquidation
Speaker:process, about impending bankruptcy
Speaker:closures, all of that kind of stuff.
Speaker:His target audience is as much about
Speaker:businesses that are at that end, but
Speaker:it's actually more for the accountants
Speaker:and the lawyers who are wanting
Speaker:more information in that space
Speaker:because Darren's business comes in
Speaker:and helps with that.
Speaker:And what does he talk to?
Speaker:He talks to the problems.
Speaker:We had one episode recently that
Speaker:was very personal to me because I
Speaker:happen to use a building company
Speaker:that has gone into liquidation
Speaker:subsequently.
Speaker:So in that particular
Speaker:episode, Darren was talking about
Speaker:all of the things around that and
Speaker:what is happening to the building
Speaker:industry and what is impacting
Speaker:them and what to look out for.
Speaker:He wasn't talking about me solving
Speaker:my problems because I am not his
Speaker:target audience.
Speaker:We're talking about solving the problems
Speaker:of the businesses that are heading in
Speaker:that direction, and that they should
Speaker:contact him earlier, and that there are
Speaker:avenues to go down.
Speaker:The podcast hits the mark.
Speaker:It's got him into a top 10 list
Speaker:of similar style podcasts, and he's
Speaker:competing against some very large
Speaker:organizations and is picking up
Speaker:speed and momentum in that category,
Speaker:which is fantastic.
Speaker:The other one is a good example
Speaker:is The Connected Accountant, right?
Speaker:So they're all trying to target
Speaker:accountants, and they're doing it
Speaker:through joining three different
Speaker:businesses together.
Speaker:It's worthwhile checking out
Speaker:that episode.
Speaker:They're building their audience
Speaker:slowly but surely.
Speaker:They are doing lots of things to try and
Speaker:put their content out there and share
Speaker:it among partners.
Speaker:They've got three different businesses
Speaker:coming together effectively, sharing
Speaker:it on their socials and being out there.
Speaker:And it's easy because in this
Speaker:particular case, and the same with
Speaker:Darren- What, what I do for my clients
Speaker:with the podcast is for every episode,
Speaker:there is about 40 pieces of content
Speaker:that's created, and in the case
Speaker:of The Connected Accountant, that's
Speaker:40 times three people that are on
Speaker:the, um, that are on that particular
Speaker:podcast because there's a three
Speaker:regular panelists.
Speaker:So there's huge amounts of
Speaker:content that's being generated
Speaker:and putting it out there.
Speaker:You keep putting content out there
Speaker:in lo- in all of the right places
Speaker:that is talking about you solving
Speaker:the problems, and the content is easy
Speaker:'cause it's given to you after you
Speaker:have the podcast conversation.
Speaker:You save time, you save money, you
Speaker:get more people out there, you create
Speaker:more opportunities.
Speaker:Those audiences start coming to you,
Speaker:start building with you, and next thing
Speaker:you know, there are doors that are
Speaker:starting to open.
Speaker:There are lots of opportunities to
Speaker:engage for less time on your part and
Speaker:going much further than you can now by
Speaker:having a podcast.
Speaker:See, growing the audience is about
Speaker:being out there consistently,
Speaker:talking to what matters
Speaker:to the people you are trying
Speaker:to engage with.
Speaker:From there, your audience will build.
Speaker:Yes, you can spend advertising dollars,
Speaker:but you don't need to do that.
Speaker:You need quality first.
Speaker:Slow and steady comes from
Speaker:consistency, and it's in a
Speaker:sustainable way, making them feel
Speaker:that they understand you and that you
Speaker:have the answers.
Speaker:A podcast is going to give
Speaker:you all of that.
Speaker:The audience growth will happen because
Speaker:it's gifted to you.
Speaker:It does ultimately, as I said,
Speaker:save you time.
Speaker:Giving you the final example here, going
Speaker:back to Darren.
Speaker:We catch up for two hours, four
Speaker:times a year.
Speaker:Turn that into six 15 to 20
Speaker:minute episodes.
Speaker:Give them all the material so that
Speaker:his team can then put that out there
Speaker:on a consistent basis, and you have
Speaker:audience growth, and it's consistently
Speaker:building episode after episode after
Speaker:episode It's not that difficult
Speaker:once you commit to the podcast.
Speaker:I hope you've got something out of
Speaker:this particular episode of Podcast
Speaker:Done For You Show.
Speaker:Lots of gold there for anyone that's
Speaker:been thinking about having a podcast,
Speaker:and thinking that the audience may be
Speaker:the stumbling block.
Speaker:We're going to include a book that
Speaker:you can download through a link in
Speaker:the show notes to give you more things
Speaker:to think about from this episode,
Speaker:including some key quotes and questions
Speaker:to ask yourself, and also a way that you
Speaker:can book a meeting with me so we can
Speaker:talk about your business, understand
Speaker:what it is that you're doing, and
Speaker:whether the podcast is the right fit
Speaker:for you, and indeed, whether working
Speaker:with me might be the right fit or not.
Speaker:If it is, we'll happily work out
Speaker:a plan with you.
Speaker:If it isn't, we'll happily steer you in
Speaker:the right direction.
Speaker:All right.
Speaker:Thanks for your company.
Speaker:We look forward to it again next
Speaker:time on Podcast Done For You Show.
