Shownotes

Brett Rasmussen is originally from the US and first went to live on this remote island called OJIKA in Nagasaki prefecture as a JET ALT teacher. He then worked in tourism and now found a passion for restoring traditional old houses and structures (minka/kominka).

Brett works on Ojika island and elsewhere in Japan under the name “Okibi”. In this talk, Brett tells us about some of his projects and insights into the lesser known aspects of traditional Japanese carpentry and house design which he has been learning over the years. Joinery, plastering, bamboo walls, pounded flooring and disassembly of beams for repair or reuse. Find out more about Brett's projects and future opportunities to join workshops and stays in one of the houses he has worked on, or visit a local onsen he built the sauna for, so many great Brett projects to explore when we visit.
