Speaker:

They're the joyful agains our children.

2

:

Shout on the swings, the exhausting

agains of cooking and laundry and

3

:

the difficult agains of discipline.

4

:

So much of what we do

as mothers is on repeat.

5

:

So what if we woke up with clarity,

knowing which agains we were called to.

6

:

And went to bed believing we are

faithful in what matters most.

7

:

We believe God's word is

the key to untangle from the

8

:

confusion and overwhelm we feel.

9

:

Let's look up together to embrace a

motherhood full of freedom and joy.

10

:

This is the again podcast.

11

:

I'm Stephanie Hickox, and in this

episode, I'm joined by Betsy Corning,

12

:

the author of Entrusted With the

Child's Heart, and the founder and

13

:

director of Entrusted Ministries.

14

:

Did You know that over the course of

about four decades, she and her husband

15

:

David have developed a Bible study

curriculum entitled, get the Word Out,

16

:

developing a Devotional Lifestyle.

17

:

It is highly unique.

18

:

You can tailor it for

whatever season you're at.

19

:

As one of my friends says, get the

word out, teaches you to have the aha

20

:

moments for yourself in scripture.

21

:

And once you learn to do that, you won't

wanna have anyone else do it for you.

22

:

Betsy, who is my aunt,

and I love color so much.

23

:

And as it is February, I felt like it

was wise to just skip ahead to this tool.

24

:

Maybe you've been listening to the

dwelling place and thinking oh,

25

:

I would really love to be marking

my favorite verses in my Bible.

26

:

You could utilize this tool, or

you are reading through scripture.

27

:

Or maybe you don't have a plan this

year and you'll consider checking.

28

:

Get the word out for yourself.

29

:

We're gonna talk about this

tool of color coding, which has

30

:

transformed the way I read my Bible,

31

:

So often people say when

they're reading the word.

32

:

They look back and think,

what did I just read?

33

:

I'm telling you, i've never had a

moment like that since beginning.

34

:

This color coding system,

35

:

And I'm really hopeful

that you'll give it a try.

36

:

We have these color chart bookmarks for

sale on our website for only 50 cents.

37

:

So you can grab it for yourself,

for your small group, for

38

:

anyone you know, even your kids.

39

:

Steph: All right.

40

:

Woo hoo.

41

:

You made it, or perhaps, you heard

color coding and you skipped right

42

:

to this one, and we are your people.

43

:

We love this tool.

44

:

It.

45

:

It's transformed the way that I read

scripture and I absolutely love it.

46

:

And we have these fun bookmarks

that are available on our website.

47

:

We also have a PDF that explains

the system very clearly.

48

:

But if you are listening and

you're thinking, I can't wait

49

:

to dive into that tool, you can

order these helpful bookmarks

50

:

for you and for your Bible study.

51

:

You might have seen some color

coding systems before, but they're

52

:

probably different, and they're

probably a little bit more basic.

53

:

We think that all 14 of these colors are

really important and pivotal for your

54

:

study, and at least they have been for us.

55

:

Aunt Betsy, talk about how you

developed this system and if it's

56

:

important to stick to these colors.

57

:

Betsy: After doing this a long time and

doing this with a pilot group, about

58

:

20 years ago, I had one person say.

59

:

Can I just pick my own colors and do them?

60

:

And she was upset with me forever

after that because she said, no,

61

:

I needed to do the colors that you

were doing because we were talking

62

:

together through certain themes.

63

:

And hers didn't match ours.

64

:

She wanted to do hers and I let her, and

then she wished she never had done that.

65

:

The other thing is my husband

for years just did six 'cause

66

:

he's kind of a basic guy.

67

:

And I said, no.

68

:

There's 12, and actually now there's 14,

but he said no, there's really just six.

69

:

But he's now using all 14 too, because

you can be going through and you can

70

:

start out, some people say, well,

can I just choose one or two colors?

71

:

Well, you can, that's fine, but you

wanna know that you have all these 14.

72

:

So if you're gonna use one or two, pick

the one or two that you're going to use.

73

:

These on the top are the

more regularly used ones.

74

:

And if you use those then that's fine.

75

:

But when you get down to one of

these and you're like, oh, I really

76

:

wanna mark that, you're not at a

loss as what color should I use?

77

:

And the reason is you can see that there's

a couple different purples on here and

78

:

it's hard to find two different purples.

79

:

There's so much I could talk about

this, but this happens to be currently

80

:

what I have for my, colored pencils,

81

:

I even have one that I, I took this to say

the Hobby lobby, and I'll take my color

82

:

and I will mark a pencil next to this one.

83

:

So what I like to use, this

happens to be a Prisma color.

84

:

Prisma Color, PC 9 0 9.

85

:

And I figured, well,

that matches pretty well.

86

:

They don't have to match exactly,

but you are gonna want them to

87

:

match enough so that this green

will be distinct from this green.

88

:

This purple will be distinct from

this purple, and these three blues

89

:

will be distinct from each other.

90

:

So that's the point.

91

:

There's a light pink and

a dark pink, which is also

92

:

difficult to find in any cer.

93

:

Certain sets I've used sets for years,

but you'll have to get a larger set

94

:

in order to be able to get double

pinks, double purples, and so forth.

95

:

So I have found the easiest thing

for me to do is just by the pencils

96

:

individually, these soft lead.

97

:

This dark green here represents

God, his attributes and his word.

98

:

So when I'm reading, I'm gonna mark in

my Bible, I'm just gonna underline in

99

:

this screen, do I have to underline every

single thing in my Bible in green that

100

:

has to do with God and his attributes?

101

:

Absolutely not just the ones that I

want to, and, nobody's gonna check your

102

:

Bible and say, you missed this one.

103

:

Nobody's gonna check your one and say, oh,

that should have been a different color.

104

:

Sometimes I'm reading along and

I see something could be three

105

:

different colors, honestly.

106

:

I just pick the one I want.

107

:

Sometimes I mark it with two colors.

108

:

Sometimes I mark it with three colors.

109

:

It's your own study.

110

:

Okay.

111

:

And so this dark green is for

the word of God, his attributes.

112

:

Another thing that I do is i'll take

a Sharpie and I'll write on here,

113

:

God, his attributes and his word.

114

:

And then I've got, you know, when

I'm starting out, I can know I can

115

:

have this to look at all green.

116

:

Is this when I'm starting out?

117

:

But I know these, uh, so well now I, I

just automatically know what this one is.

118

:

But, uh, I'll pull each one of

these out here so you can see.

119

:

Here's my dark blue, the Holy Spirit,

spiritual gifts and attributes.

120

:

And sometimes, these two will go

together and it'll be hard to distinguish

121

:

and I don't know that you, you know,

necessarily have to worry about that.

122

:

Uh, the third one is Jesus, right here.

123

:

This one I write on because it looks so

much like one of my other colors that I

124

:

have to write on it to distinguish it.

125

:

So this is Jesus the gospel.

126

:

Salvation, anything about

salvation is this red color.

127

:

The next one is this bright pink color,

this is righteous Choices blessings of

128

:

obedience, faith, and the fear of God.

129

:

It's says dark pink.

130

:

Doesn't look dark pink

there, but it's bright pink.

131

:

The next one is orange.

132

:

This is man, the fear of man consequences,

disobedience, warnings, and I think

133

:

you can see if you look real closely,

it's kind of muddled out there, but.

134

:

I wrote that on there with my Sharpie,

yellow is family, marriage and parenting.

135

:

I would like to get

these pencils imprinted.

136

:

That would be great.

137

:

Memorial verses.

138

:

So that's my dark purple,

blue, the dark blue.

139

:

The church witnessing evangelism,

ministry and fellowship.

140

:

Light blue prayers, praise and worship.

141

:

This one is so light.

142

:

Sometimes I use this one, but see

it looks an awful lot like this one,

143

:

but not when I write them with them.

144

:

They look very different

when I write with them.

145

:

So you're gonna wanna have

to figure out, little system.

146

:

Uh, a medium green for

stewardship, giving and money.

147

:

It is brown for persecution, spiritual

warfare, demons, and the occult,

148

:

which is different than the orange.

149

:

Remember, it's man sin

and then pink or angels.

150

:

Angels aren't very often in the Bible.

151

:

You might think, oh, angels would

be in every book of the Bible, but

152

:

there's very specific times and reasons

that angels aren't in the Bible.

153

:

Angels are God's messengers, and when they

appear in the Bible, they are delivering

154

:

some very important message from the Lord.

155

:

So it's fun to have that

pink show up in your Bible.

156

:

Then prophecy and eschatology.

157

:

Eschatology meaning

the study of end times.

158

:

Is another one of these purple colors,

and it's this one which looks very

159

:

similar to that other one I showed you,

but it looks lot different on paper.

160

:

And then this gray one,

which is historical facts.

161

:

Steph: You'll be thankful for that.

162

:

there are times where you're

thinking, wait, what would this be?

163

:

And then it, you're like realizing it's a

164

:

Betsy: It's A catchall.

165

:

And you know what?

166

:

There are so many historical facts

that are really important and helpful.

167

:

The one that pops to my mind right now

is Luke's writing his detailed writing.

168

:

And when he says, Carius was governor

of Syria, or something like that, that

169

:

is helping us provide an exact date.

170

:

And why would people give so much detail?

171

:

That's a historical fact that is helping

us date the time of Jesus's birth.

172

:

We are thankful for those things.

173

:

Steph: Yeah I was so grateful that I was

able to find, it was a back to school

174

:

sale or something at Walmart, and I found.

175

:

A pack for only $10 of my prisma colors.

176

:

And then I just had to add

three colors to it, I think.

177

:

And as you talked about, the dark pink

and the orange and the green, I just use

178

:

so much that it's helpful to go to Hobby

Lobby and you can buy them individually.

179

:

I have reached out to Prisma Color.

180

:

Eventually I would love for them

to create a set just with us.

181

:

But we'll link the

specific Prisma colors that.

182

:

We find are helpful for matching to it,

but it's so neat to see the patterns that

183

:

emerge in the word when you're doing this

that you might not realize , what happens?

184

:

When there's persecution and then

what is the follow up to that?

185

:

And if you weren't doing color

coding, you might not see the pattern.

186

:

There have been times in scripture

I'm reading, and you're reading

187

:

about a complex character like Baam.

188

:

In the Old Testament, you're thinking,

well of course this is all orange.

189

:

And then you're like reading a couple

chapters later and you're like,

190

:

well this is complicated because it

says the Lord told him to do this.

191

:

And sometimes I have to pause.

192

:

I can't quite underline

here anything until I know.

193

:

More about this character and, and

what happens and sometimes we don't

194

:

know about internal motivation later,

or maybe I need to reference the New

195

:

Testament to know how I felt about that.

196

:

But it, it really has been so helpful.

197

:

And I just, I think even as a busy mom.

198

:

you're like, there's so many things

to do and you sit down to read

199

:

and all of a sudden you notice

that there's like a cheerio on the

200

:

floor on your cabinet or something.

201

:

You just don't really have those moments

when you are color coding scripture

202

:

because you're just thinking so

deeply about it and meditating on it.

203

:

So when we balance that depth with.

204

:

Kind of the overview of the

chapter summary statements.

205

:

I mean, we're really training ourselves

to think big picture, but then also

206

:

zoom in and it's neat all of these

tools, how they give us clarity about

207

:

the word, but in different ways.

208

:

Betsy: Yes.

209

:

One of my favorite things in

the entire world is colors.

210

:

I love colors.

211

:

I love mixing colors and blending colors.

212

:

And one time a friend, uh, I went to her

house, her studio with some other people

213

:

for, I don't know, a couple of years.

214

:

To take painting and I would just get

so mesmerized just by mixing my palette.

215

:

And she was, she would say, when

you come here, you never talk,

216

:

you never say anything because I'm

just like looking at these colors.

217

:

I, I get so absorbed in it.

218

:

And, um, but it's really, really

is one of my favorite thing.

219

:

I enjoy colors so much, so it,

there had to be colors in this.

220

:

But in be doing colors, I realized it's

not just a busy thing that we're doing.

221

:

You know, something that takes time,

but underlining certain phrases

222

:

and parts of scripture helped me

understand scripture so much more.

223

:

And one of those examples was

what you sort of mentioned a

224

:

little bit ago, Stephanie, so I

realized that when I was studying.

225

:

Acts and I saw that the guys, you

know, the guys, the apostles were doing

226

:

ministry and this would be our medium

blue color, and they were out there

227

:

sharing the gospel and, evangelizing and

doing the hard work of ministry that what

228

:

would happen would be this brown color.

229

:

They would be so persecuted.

230

:

So persecuted, but through it all they

would rejoice praise and worship God.

231

:

And God showed up and

multiplied their numbers.

232

:

And this, this pattern kept showing

up every time that I was so encouraged

233

:

by that, because I know that when I.

234

:

Speak for the Lord and I do ministry.

235

:

I can expect to have some

backlash, some persecution, but

236

:

I will keep my perspective right.

237

:

I will continue to praise the Lord and he

will do, you know, he will stand with me.

238

:

He multiplied their numbers.

239

:

Brought them out of prisons.

240

:

He did, he provided for their needs,

whatever it is, that the Lord is

241

:

with you through all these things.

242

:

And what a great thing for me to notice

that I don't think I would've ever picked

243

:

out if I hadn't looked at these colors.

244

:

Another one that's very obvious

to all of us, I think would be

245

:

these two in the book of Proverbs.

246

:

So much is the pink and orange.

247

:

There's some other colors in

there, but predominantly the

248

:

choices of the wise person and

the choices of the foolish person.

249

:

And you know, I have my Bible open

to one of those pages right now.

250

:

There's so much in Isaiah of the dark

green and the sovereignty of God.

251

:

Same with job and the promises of God.

252

:

And so many wonderful prophecies

of God that we get this dark

253

:

purple and this dark green

254

:

wonderful.

255

:

Things yet to come.

256

:

There's so much in the Old Testament

that still hasn't happened.

257

:

People say the Bible's outdated.

258

:

Well, even the New Testament

isn't outdated because

259

:

revelations has not yet happened.

260

:

And when it does, uh, it happens

exactly as it says it will, uh,

261

:

then we can say it's outdated, but

that's not gonna be the case either.

262

:

Heaven and Earth will pass away, but

the Lord's words will not pass away.

263

:

And so much of the Old Testament.

264

:

Prophecies have not yet happened.

265

:

They will occur with Jesus's second

coming, which has not yet happened.

266

:

So even the Old Testament is not outdated.

267

:

And when we think of that, we can see

how timeless God is and how he works

268

:

with man to bring man to repentance

through all these different cycles

269

:

of culture, throughout history,

how he is so very patient with us.

270

:

And so very merciful and so gracious

to draw him to us, to himself, and we

271

:

can see a lot of that through these

colors and through these themes.

272

:

Steph: Certainly.

273

:

You can see this is high on our priority

list that you would utilize this

274

:

tool, but again, it can be tailored.

275

:

You don't have to underline every verse.

276

:

You can pick out the ones

that meant the most to you,

277

:

I hope we convince you to check this out.

278

:

Remember, those links are in

the show notes and we'll be

279

:

interspersing more of these.

280

:

Get the word out episodes

throughout the coming months

281

:

You can try them out and see how

they bring insight to your time with

282

:

the Lord and reveal more about his

character and his goodness to you.

283

:

Speaker 2: Before you go, I want to

pray this benediction over you from

284

:

Second Thessalonians one 11 through 12.

285

:

We're rooting for you to this end.

286

:

We always pray for you that our God

may make you worthy of his calling

287

:

and fulfill every resolve for good.

288

:

And every work of faith by his power

so that the name of our Lord Jesus

289

:

may be glorified in you and you

and Him according to the grace of

290

:

our God and the Lord Jesus Christ.

291

:

Amen.

292

:

Until we meet again.
