We've been talking a lot about how we can get confused, thinking we've got to save an institution. And actually we know that institutions all are frail. And the faith has continued now for, well, more than 2,000 years, if you go back in history to other faith traditions. But for those of us who are Christians, for 2000 years, the faith has outpaced the institution. I met a fellow named Willie James Jennings several years ago when he was a professor at Duke Divinity School. He's since moved to Yale Divinity, and he speaks of visiting an institution where the people were feeling so badly about themselves and about the work, and it just wasn't a positive spirit. Jennings said that slowly they begin to think about the institution, not from the inside out, but from the outside in.

What was God doing all around that were already related, things that were already related and could be related to that institution? And they began to discover the newness of God's mercy and.
