Evo Terra:

Your podcast is unique.

Evo Terra:

Just like every other podcast.

Evo Terra:

Or just like every other podcast tries to be.

Evo Terra:

The truth is figuring out your show's unique point of view is hard.

Evo Terra:

But asking these four questions can help.

Evo Terra:

Today's episode is brought to you by Gumball, the premiere

Evo Terra:

marketplace to easily and efficiently buy host-read podcast ads.

Evo Terra:

Gumball provides a transparent and modern buying platform, connecting great

Evo Terra:

podcasts with the best advertisers.

Evo Terra:

Gumball takes away all the logistical headaches for podcasters and advertisers

Evo Terra:

alike by managing inventory schedules, providing easy and consistent ad

Evo Terra:

script instructions, easy aircheck uploading, and ensuring payments

Evo Terra:

are made in a timely fashion.

Evo Terra:

Best of all, Gumball takes pride in offering the most podcaster friendly

Evo Terra:

terms as a standard, meaning more money flowing directly to the podcaster.

Evo Terra:

As it should be!

Evo Terra:

If your show is pulling down more than 10,000 downloads per episode, you owe

Evo Terra:

it to yourself to talk to Gumball at Gumball.fm to see how they can help you

Evo Terra:

make even more money with your podcast.

Evo Terra:

That's Gumball.fm.

Evo Terra:

And tell 'em Evo sent you!

Evo Terra:

Hello, and welcome to another Podcast Pontifications with me, Evo Terra.

Evo Terra:

When I ask clients, "Who is your podcast for?"

Evo Terra:

I typically find that they're casting far too wide of a net.

Evo Terra:

Some of them actually say, "Everybody," which tells me

Evo Terra:

they effectively mean nobody.

Evo Terra:

Now, they usually adjust quickly after that and start getting more

Evo Terra:

specific, which, in turn, helps me help them create a better podcast.

Evo Terra:

Or this can help me help them refine their current efforts to

Evo Terra:

make their existing podcast better.

Evo Terra:

An element of understanding the answer to "Who is your podcast for?"

Evo Terra:

is figuring out your unique point of view.

Evo Terra:

And yes, I think that you and your podcast should certainly have a point of view.

Evo Terra:

You're not Wikipedia, you're a podcaster.

Evo Terra:

Finding your unique point of view is hard.

Evo Terra:

For many, it's one of the least fun things about podcasting.

Evo Terra:

But it's also a critical piece of the puzzle, especially if you want to have

Evo Terra:

a show that stands out from the crowd.

Evo Terra:

Now, my friend, Pam Slim, recently shared four questions that she uses

Evo Terra:

when helping her business customers.

Evo Terra:

These are questions that I think and I know will help podcasters who

Evo Terra:

haven't quite nailed down what it is that makes their show special.

Evo Terra:

These questions will help them figure out what it is that makes their show special.

Evo Terra:

Perhaps what makes your show special.

Evo Terra:

If you already have all of this stuff figured out for your show and you've

Evo Terra:

nailed it down, then keep these in your back pocket for the next podcast you

Evo Terra:

start because we do that in podcasting.

Evo Terra:

Be sure to take notes on this one, or better yet, just go to the

Evo Terra:

article which will be posted at Podcast Pontifications very soon.

Evo Terra:

Or even better than that, if you subscribe to Podcast Pontifications in Your Inbox

Evo Terra:

- that's a free service that you can get to from podcastpontifications.com - you'll

Evo Terra:

get the article, which has all of these links and notes, all emailed to you,

Evo Terra:

nice and handy for when you need them.

Evo Terra:

All right, with that, let me ask you these four questions.

Evo Terra:

Number one, what is missing from the conversation?

Evo Terra:

Of all of the podcasts that also cover the exact same topics you

Evo Terra:

cover, what aren't they talking about?

Evo Terra:

I'm going to use Sounds Profitable as an example.

Evo Terra:

This is a newsletter and a show that I've been involved with since it began.

Evo Terra:

Now, you know there are lots of podcasts about podcasting, and many

Evo Terra:

of them do talk about the business of podcasting and how to monetize a podcast.

Evo Terra:

But none of them were talking about podcasting ad tech specifically.

Evo Terra:

So Bryan Barletta, host of the show, writer of the newsletter, took his

Evo Terra:

years of podcast ad tech experience and made a show that stands out as its

Evo Terra:

own, apart from everyone else in the podcasting space, just by figuring out

Evo Terra:

what's missing from the conversation.

Evo Terra:

Question number two, who's important voice, or whose important

Evo Terra:

perspective, is not being shared?

Evo Terra:

When you listen to podcasts that are similar to yours,

Evo Terra:

whose voice is underrepresented?

Evo Terra:

There's an obvious play here and large opportunity for those from

Evo Terra:

underrepresented groups or minorities, yes, but it doesn't have to stop there

Evo Terra:

or doesn't have to be isolated to that.

Evo Terra:

I'm going to take The Bangkok Podcast as an example.

Evo Terra:

That's a show that I co-hosted a few years back with seventy-some-odd

Evo Terra:

episodes that I helped with.

Evo Terra:

When I was living in Thailand, obviously.

Evo Terra:

Now there are, as there were, plenty of travel shows that do focus on Thailand

Evo Terra:

and Bangkok as a travel destination.

Evo Terra:

But Bangkok is home to hundreds of thousands of ex-pats, and even more

Evo Terra:

people who call Bangkok their second home.

Evo Terra:

They travel there every single year.

Evo Terra:

And that's an instant audience of people who don't really care about

Evo Terra:

the travel aspects, but want to know the city better that they've

Evo Terra:

chosen to live in - an important perspective that was not being shared.

Evo Terra:

Question number three, what obvious truths are being ignored?

Evo Terra:

There may be a lot of podcasts talking about the topics that you cover on your

Evo Terra:

podcast, and many of those podcasts talk with plenty of enthusiasm.

Evo Terra:

But are they ignoring something that is blatantly obvious and

Evo Terra:

needs to be brought to bear?

Evo Terra:

I'm going to make up an example here.

Evo Terra:

It's something I've thought about for a while.

Evo Terra:

I want to create a podcast that exposes the crappy B-grade movies and television

Evo Terra:

shows that Netflix foists upon us and tries to make us think are good,

Evo Terra:

that these movies aren't really bad.

Evo Terra:

But they certainly are not good.

Evo Terra:

And I think we should point to them.

Evo Terra:

Again, this is in the ideation phase and I probably won't do it.

Evo Terra:

So please, if this sounds appealing to you, steal my idea,

Evo Terra:

and uncover this obvious truth.

Evo Terra:

Question number four, what critical steps are not being covered?

Evo Terra:

This is especially important if your show exists in the how-to or

Evo Terra:

knowledge transfer space within the niche that you already occupy.

Evo Terra:

And so with that, here's another free idea in the podcasting

Evo Terra:

space because we have plenty of how-to-get-started-as-a-podcaster

Evo Terra:

podcasts, but there are very few, if any, that are talking

Evo Terra:

to the mid-level podcaster who was on the verge of turning pro.

Evo Terra:

I know there are several pro podcasters who listen to Podcast Pontifications.

Evo Terra:

I know there are many people who are professionals in podcasting who work

Evo Terra:

at or on pro level shows who also listen to Podcast Pontifications.

Evo Terra:

Maybe one of them, maybe you, will take the impetus here and create

Evo Terra:

a show that is focused on turning podcasters into pro podcasters.

Evo Terra:

That's a critical step that is not being covered.

Evo Terra:

Now again, I encourage you to check the episode details for a list

Evo Terra:

of those four questions because you were driving or walking or

Evo Terra:

washing dishes and whatever else.

Evo Terra:

It's all available at podcastpontifications.com.

Evo Terra:

While any of these questions can really help you nail down your

Evo Terra:

show's unique point of view, ideally you'll consider all four of them.

Evo Terra:

Most importantly, you'll have answers to all four of them because if you

Evo Terra:

can't answer, it might indicate that you've a bit more research to do around

Evo Terra:

the niche you're trying to occupy.

Evo Terra:

Study the others making podcasts in your niche because this

Evo Terra:

landscape is constantly shifting.

Evo Terra:

Let's do a quick Boostagram.

Evo Terra:

Now it's time for the boost-the boost-the boost- Boostagram Corner.

Evo Terra:

Boostagram Corner.

Evo Terra:

I don't know a thing about crypto.

Evo Terra:

"Anonymous" used PayPal to send their value-for-value payment

Evo Terra:

with the following message:

Evo Terra:

"I love your little tweet threads and I'm always learning.

Evo Terra:

I hope this helps."

Evo Terra:

Indeed, it does help.

Evo Terra:

Thank you very much, Anonymous.

Evo Terra:

And thank you for calling out those tweet threads.

Evo Terra:

They certainly do take me some time and effort, but I also know that there

Evo Terra:

are people like you who are very busy, who, for whatever reason, their own

Evo Terra:

reasons, can't listen to the show, can't subscribe to the newsletter.

Evo Terra:

They just don't work for them.

Evo Terra:

But the Twitter threads are a nice way for them to get at least the

Evo Terra:

highlights of the content and when necessary, dive a little deeper.

Evo Terra:

So I'm very glad that you enjoy those and have called them out specifically.

Evo Terra:

Thank you.

Evo Terra:

And if you're getting value out of this show, articles I post, the videos

Evo Terra:

that I make, the Twitter threads, any of that stuff, anything related to

Evo Terra:

the content that I make, please visit podcastpontifications.com/valueforvalue

Evo Terra:

for simple ways you can support the program.

Evo Terra:

No episodes for me on Friday.

Evo Terra:

So with that, have a fantastic weekend.

Evo Terra:

I shall be back on Monday with yet another Podcast Pontifications.

Evo Terra:

Cheers!
