Speaker:

It's Monday, June 24th at 2024.

2

:

And this is today's edition

of the daily Bible podcast.

3

:

Today, we're in second Chronicles,

chapters, 10 through 12.

4

:

Some of this is going to be a bit

familiar because you've already

5

:

read some of this and yesterday's

reading in the book of first Kings.

6

:

Uh, of 12 through 14.

7

:

But today, as we make our way into

chapter 10 of second Chronicles,

8

:

you're going to see probably the,

the most familiar part, because this

9

:

is almost a verbatim copy and paste.

10

:

And there's a bit of overlap here,

whereas we're looking at the final years

11

:

of king Rehoboam again, reablement the

Southern kingdom, king Solomon's son.

12

:

And so you're going to see some

things here that he did yesterday.

13

:

And you're going to see about the counsel

that he forced took from the elders.

14

:

You're going to see the counsel

of his peers that he adopted.

15

:

And you're going to see that God is

still markedly absent as a result of

16

:

this, the Northern kingdom and the

Southern kingdom are going to splits.

17

:

It is the year 9 31 BC in

this split will be forever.

18

:

This is the rest of his.

19

:

Israel's history.

20

:

And it's going to have.

21

:

Far reaching consequences.

22

:

And the Northern kingdom,

Jeroboam the son of D.

23

:

I bet we'll rule and he'll have the 10

Northern kingdoms and the Southern kingdom

24

:

Rehoboam will have to, well, they're going

to say one, cause Judah absorbs Benjamin,

25

:

but he has two, two tribes, not kingdoms.

26

:

Clarify that.

27

:

In second Chronicles, chapter

11, you have the beginning of

28

:

a civil war that God stops.

29

:

He does.

30

:

So by the man called shamiah

the man of God, he tells him,

31

:

Hey, don't fight your relatives.

32

:

This is of me.

33

:

And so Rehoboam relents that doesn't stop

Rhea bone from building his defenses.

34

:

And so he fortify some of his cities.

35

:

And he prepares for whatever

future of war that he encountered.

36

:

And so he and Benjamin, remember

these two tribes work together.

37

:

They become eventually known as

one, even though they are separate.

38

:

And verses 13 through

the rest of chapter 11.

39

:

You see some of the ways that Rehoboam

benefited from JIRA Boams folly.

40

:

Now you remember Jeroboam he and Stu

institutes a new religion in the Northern

41

:

kingdom puts two golden calves in

the north and the south consequently.

42

:

The priests and the Levi's from

the tribe of Levi , are evicted.

43

:

They're given the boot.

44

:

They go down south to where

the, where the temple is.

45

:

They go down south to where the

true worship of Yahweh exists.

46

:

And verse 17 says they

strengthen the kingdom of Judah.

47

:

And this took place for three years.

48

:

And so Rehoboam benefits

greatly from this.

49

:

Now this benefit is a short-term

situation, but just notice

50

:

here God blesses and protects

Judah by what Jeroboam does.

51

:

In verses 18 through the end of

chapter 11, you see some of the overlap

52

:

between Solomon and Rehoboam like

father, like son, as the saying goes.

53

:

Uh, seems like Rehoboam has a

great love for women, including

54

:

Myka, the daughter of Absalom

above all his wives and concubines.

55

:

He took 18 wives and 60 concubines.

56

:

And he fathered lots

of sons and daughters.

57

:

Now again, he's not quite as bad

as Solomon, but you see some of

58

:

the elements that led to Solomon's

downfall also evident in life as well.

59

:

Finally in second Chronicles, chapter 12.

60

:

We have a little more

information about Rehoboam.

61

:

Bombs rain.

62

:

In fact what you'll notice here

at the beginning of chapter 12, it

63

:

says this when the rule of Rehoboam

was established and he was strong.

64

:

He abandoned the law of the Lord

and consequently, all Israel with

65

:

him now, Israel, in this context,

Is speaking to the Southern kingdom.

66

:

It probably has implications.

67

:

For the Northern kingdom, but it's about

his leadership, his rule, his reign.

68

:

As the leader goes.

69

:

So go, the people as the husband goes,

so goes to the wife and the kids.

70

:

As the boss goes, so goes the employees

as the pastor goes, so goes the church.

71

:

Uh, this principle of leadership

and its impact on everyone else

72

:

around us is pretty evident.

73

:

It's not hard to see.

74

:

But it is hard in the moment.

75

:

To feel like it's going to

have that kind of effect.

76

:

We think, oh, I'm just sending in secret.

77

:

I'm just having this little bit of

sin over here and no one knows it's

78

:

not going to affect anybody else.

79

:

And that's just not true.

80

:

Sin bleeds.

81

:

It affects everybody else around us.

82

:

It like cancer infects and affects

the people that we are privileged

83

:

to love and to lead, especially if

you're in a position of leadership.

84

:

Now you may not have a formal position.

85

:

You might, you might not have a title

in your name, but you still have a

86

:

position you're in some way, shape

or form influencing someone else.

87

:

And I just need you to seek here

in a second Chronicles, chapter 12,

88

:

how easily the sin of the leader

infects the sin of the follower and

89

:

it influences them in negative ways.

90

:

Now I also.

91

:

I want you to see another thing.

92

:

It was reablement success.

93

:

It was his strength that

made him feel invincible.

94

:

And this is what ultimately

led him away from the Lord.

95

:

I can't help, but be reminded

of Proverbs chapter 30.

96

:

Uh, well, remember we read this remove

far from me, falsehood and lying.

97

:

Give me neither poverty nor riches.

98

:

And feed me with a food

that is needful for me.

99

:

The lest I be full and deny

you and say, who is the Lord?

100

:

Or less IB pour in steel and

profane the name of my God.

101

:

I think if reablement have prayed

this, this might have avoided a

102

:

lot of pain and heartache in this

particular part of his reign.

103

:

It was because he was successful.

104

:

He was strong.

105

:

He was established that he felt

like he didn't need God anymore.

106

:

God in that sense, then let him go.

107

:

And all Israel with him, the Southern

kingdom followed his leadership.

108

:

But rest assured here, God is

not ambivalent toward this.

109

:

He sends shack.

110

:

The king of Egypt to come against

a RUSA them with all of his

111

:

chariots and all of his horsemen.

112

:

And he comes in power.

113

:

What ends up happening though?

114

:

Is that God sends.

115

:

God sends a prophet to Rehoboam.

116

:

And Rehoboam responds in humility.

117

:

Check this out in verse eight.

118

:

And then the princess of Israel

and the king humbled themselves

119

:

and said, the Lord is righteous.

120

:

That is what is what God is doing.

121

:

Is perfectly right.

122

:

This is what we deserve.

123

:

He is fully justified vindicated

to do what he's doing.

124

:

Now, check this out.

125

:

This is even cooler.

126

:

Verse seven.

127

:

When the Lord saw that they

humbled themselves, the word

128

:

of the Lord came to shamiah.

129

:

They have humbled themselves.

130

:

I will not destroy them, but I

will grant them some deliverance.

131

:

And my wrath shall not be poured out

on Jerusalem by the hand of Shaq.

132

:

Nevertheless, they shall

be servants to him.

133

:

They will be vassals.

134

:

Uh, that they may know my service and the

service of the kingdoms of the countries.

135

:

And so God.

136

:

Loves.

137

:

I mean, it's like, God

is attracted to this.

138

:

God is attracted to humility.

139

:

In fact, we see several verses God

opposes the proud, but he gives

140

:

grace to the humble and the, and the

king here Rehoboam is no different.

141

:

God is so attracted to this, that

he relents on the full catastrophe

142

:

that he promised to bring.

143

:

And so, as a result of that, instead

of having his kingdom destroyed,

144

:

he has his kingdom preserved.

145

:

And he becomes only a vassal tissue shack.

146

:

Could have been far worse now,

even though Rehoboam largely has a

147

:

negative verdict on his reign, this is

actually a good, a good thing for him.

148

:

This is a good season.

149

:

Again, it's not, it's not fully good.

150

:

It would've been better for him to be

fully humbled and to follow the Lord.

151

:

But this is a good thing.

152

:

I may encourage you if you're.

153

:

If you're battling sin.

154

:

And you're arguing with the Lord

or you're combating with him.

155

:

Maybe this is a good reminder for you.

156

:

But the Lord loves humility.

157

:

Maybe instead of fighting with

him, maybe it's a good time

158

:

to humble yourself before him.

159

:

Maybe instead of arguing with

him about the way things are,

160

:

maybe you should accept them.

161

:

And ask God to help you change

instead of changing the situation.

162

:

Some of you guys have been praying

a long time for things to change.

163

:

And God hasn't done it yet.

164

:

Maybe God's looking for

you to change instead.

165

:

I don't know something to

think about as you work through

166

:

second Chronicles, chapter 12.

167

:

Well, as reablement rain

comes to a conclusion.

168

:

Again, we saw this yesterday,

but now we're going to see

169

:

the conclusion yet once more.

170

:

We see that Rehoboam rained.

171

:

Uh, for 17 years, he was 41

years old when he started ruling.

172

:

And even then he really wasn't all

that wise, but he rained for 17 years.

173

:

And he did evil in verse 14

and the side of the Lord.

174

:

He did not set his heart to seek the Lord.

175

:

His son Abijah or a bijum.

176

:

Um, uh, by Jim, we'll

see his name tomorrow.

177

:

Arraigned in his place.

178

:

And now this is the son of maca.

179

:

Absalom's daughter.

180

:

I wonder if you're thinking

about your legacy, what's God

181

:

going to say about your life.

182

:

What's going to be the verdict.

183

:

About your life before your

family, before your church, before

184

:

your employees or your employer?

185

:

What are people gonna say about you?

186

:

Now, ultimately kind of doesn't matter.

187

:

It doesn't matter what people say.

188

:

Um, It doesn't matter to the extent

that we're not living for man's

189

:

approval or applause, but we are

living for the applause of God.

190

:

We're living for the approval of Christ.

191

:

We want him to say, well done,

good and faithful servant.

192

:

And that means.

193

:

That if we're doing it right.

194

:

The people who want the same thing are

going to identify that they're going to

195

:

notice that and say, yes, they lived well.

196

:

They live for the glory of God.

197

:

I wonder what your

epitaph is going to say.

198

:

I hope you're living for the right thing.

199

:

So I hope you're not living

for the here and the now alone.

200

:

There's there's wisdom and storing

up here and now being prepared.

201

:

But we're not living for this.

202

:

We're ultimately living

for the glory of God.

203

:

And so I hope you're preparing for that.

204

:

I hope Rehoboam is rain

is a good reminder.

205

:

That ultimately what you should be doing

is putting Christ first seeking first,

206

:

his kingdom and his righteousness.

207

:

And then all the other things that

you need, there'll be added to you.

208

:

. Hope you're living for that.

209

:

Thanks for joining me again for another

edition of the daily Bible podcast.

210

:

I look forward to seeing you all tomorrow.

211

:

Same time, same place.
