Shownotes

In this episode of the Upgrade Your Education Business podcast, I reframe five pieces of common business advice so they actually work for tutors and education business owners.

I explain why generic advice often misses the realities of tutoring and education businesses. I cover defining your audience when parents and students are both involved, scaling and passive income, launching when you are ready, prioritising visibility over branding, and building a simple marketing and sales journey.

Enjoy :-)

00:00

Sumantha: If you've ever felt frustrated by business advice that doesn’t seem to work for your education business, you are not alone. Many clients follow general advice that works for other industries, but not for tutors or course creators.

00:30

Sumantha: Even within our sector, no two businesses are the same. Your style, goals, and working rhythm might be very different from someone else teaching the same subject. That’s why generic advice needs reshaping.

01:00

Sumantha: Today I’ll break down five pieces of advice that need reframing for tutors and education business owners, and show you how to make them fit your clients and business.

01:30

Sumantha: The first is defining your target audience. This advice is everywhere for good reason, but in education, you often have multiple audiences. You teach students, but parents make the payments, so they’re also part of your audience.

02:00

Sumantha: You still need to resonate with students while communicating effectively with parents. Even small changes, like the language used for a discovery call, can make a big difference in how clients respond.

02:30

Sumantha: Considering your audience alongside your working preferences is key. For example, running blended learning programs may not suit disengaged learners. You may need to adjust your approach entirely depending on your context.

03:00

Sumantha: The second piece of advice is to build something scalable or chase passive income. While appealing, this isn’t always right. Digital resources often sell once and rarely generate large passive income without a big audience.

03:30

Sumantha: You also need to consider whether creating, building an audience, and selling aligns with your goals. Scaling can be great, but only if it fits your business and your clients’ needs.

04:00

Sumantha: A better approach is to start with what you want and then assess scalability options. Many tutors are perfectly happy with one-to-one work, and that can absolutely be a successful business model.

04:30

Sumantha: The third piece of advice is launching before you are ready. This is often sold as a confidence builder, but there’s a difference between not being perfect and not being ready. I once launched a high-ticket course too early and regretted it.

05:00

Sumantha: When I created the Tutors Mastermind, I took a phased approach. I spoke to clients privately before launching publicly and gradually added features. Waiting for perfection would have stopped the launch entirely.

05:30

Sumantha: Launch when it’s ready, not perfect. Be confident, do the background work, and phase your rollout if that makes you feel safer while keeping clients supported.

06:00

Sumantha: The fourth piece of advice is that you need a logo and a website before launching. This can hold back new business owners because it takes time and money. A logo isn’t what people will remember first.

06:30

Sumantha: A website is also not essential at first. Many successful tutors launch without one. Focus on activities that connect quickly with clients; your website can come later once your marketing and offer are clear.

07:00

Sumantha: The fifth piece of advice is that if you have a great service, people will find it. This build-it-and-they-will-come principle rarely works now. Consumer behaviour, algorithms, and advertising saturation mean visibility is key.

07:30

Sumantha: A great offer is useless if no one knows about it. Many people put energy into creating amazing services but forget to map the customer journey. There must be a plan for how people discover, get excited, and buy.

08:00

Sumantha: Marketing and sales planning is essential, not optional. It doesn’t need to be complicated or time-consuming. A simple plan ensures people are warming up to your offer and there is real demand.

08:30

Sumantha: Last week, I shared how to stress-test an idea and launch with paying clients from day one. Planning the journey helps reduce risk and ensures a smoother rollout for your clients.

09:00

Sumantha: To recap, the five reframed pieces of advice are: define your audience alongside your offer, scale only if it fits your goals, launch when ready not perfect, prioritise visibility over branding assets, and build a customer journey, not just an offer.

09:30

Sumantha: Take time after this episode to note one thing to revisit or change in your business. Don’t try to fix everything at once. Small, impactful actions unlock the rest of your progress.

10:00

Sumantha: Many of these reframes will help you make better marketing and sales decisions, reduce stress, and build your education business in a way that fits your goals, clients, and capacity.

10:30

Sumantha: Even small adjustments, like refining your messaging or delivery, can make a big difference. Align your approach with your audience and your working style for sustainable growth.

11:00

Sumantha: Remember, success is your definition. You don’t need to scale or create passive income if your current model works and brings you satisfaction. Focus on what fits your goals.

11:30

Sumantha: Reframe advice to work for your education business. Adapt guidance, don’t follow blindly, and consider both your clients and your own priorities when making decisions.

12:00

Sumantha: Focus on visibility, building client relationships, and mapping simple journeys. This ensures your hard work translates into actual sales and sustainable growth for your tutoring or education business.

12:30

Sumantha: Take one step at a time. Note what needs adjustment, act, and watch how it unlocks other areas of your business naturally. Small, consistent actions lead to bigger impact.

13:00
