Trust in a relationship isn't a fixed thing you either have or don't, it's a living quality built over time through consistent action, and it can be rebuilt even where it's been damaged. Alastair shares the story of a couple whose trust had eroded, not through one dramatic event, but through a gradual build-up of small broken promises and moments where one partner didn't feel fully relied upon.

This episode walks through five habits that build trust more reliably than anything else: being consistently present when your partner needs you, complete honesty across every part of the relationship, staying calm and respectful during conflict, communicating openly, and being considerate of your partner's needs. For the couple in this episode, trust came back gradually, through repeated action rather than reassurance. As one of them put it, she started believing it not because he said anything, but because he kept doing it.

Daily Relationship Tips helps couples strengthen relationship communication, rebuild emotional intimacy, restore relationship trust, develop healthy relationship habits, and reconnect before emotional distance becomes permanent.

Hosted by Alastair Duhs, relationship coach and creator of Reconnected.

Transcripts

Speaker A:

A couple I once worked with, I'll call them Shane and Beck had gone through something that many couples face at some point, a period where trust had eroded not through any single dramatic event.

Speaker A:

Through this gradual accumulation of small disappointments, promises that hadn't quite held, moments where one person hadn't felt fully seen or relied upon by the time they came to me, Beck told me she still loved Shane.

Speaker A:

She just wasn't sure she could count on him.

Speaker A:

Hi, I'm Alistair Dwes, and this is the Daily Relationship Tips Podcast.

Speaker A:

Every episode, I share simple, practical tools to help you and your partner feel close, connected, and genuinely in love again, one small habit at a time.

Speaker A:

Trust in a relationship isn't a fixed thing, something you either have or you don't.

Speaker A:

It's a living quality that's built over time through consistent action.

Speaker A:

And it can be built even in relationships where it's been damaged through the right habits.

Speaker A:

Applied with patience.

Speaker A:

The small, consistent actions that show your partner, you can rely on me.

Speaker A:

I am who I say I am.

Speaker A:

Now.

Speaker A:

Here are five habits that build trust in a relationship more reliably than anything else.

Speaker A:

The first is being there when your partner needs you, not just in the practical sense, but emotionally present.

Speaker A:

When your partner is struggling.

Speaker A:

When they reach out.

Speaker A:

When they need you to show up consistently without needing to be prompted.

Speaker A:

The second is complete honesty.

Speaker A:

Not just factual honesty, but emotional honesty.

Speaker A:

Being open about how you feel, what you're thinking, what's going on for you.

Speaker A:

Financial honesty and sexual honesty.

Speaker A:

The willingness to actually talk about that part of the relationship rather than letting it become this zone of unspoken assumptions.

Speaker A:

Trust is built on the absence of secrets, not just the absence of lies.

Speaker A:

The third is staying calm and respectful during conflict.

Speaker A:

When things get heated, how you behave matters enormously for trust.

Speaker A:

Staying calm, including stepping back before things escalate.

Speaker A:

It communicates something really important.

Speaker A:

Even when things are hard, I'm not going to say or do things that you'll have to recover from.

Speaker A:

The fourth is communicating openly, telling your partner how you feel, asking questions rather than assuming.

Speaker A:

Creating this atmosphere where both of you know what the other person is carrying.

Speaker A:

And the fifth is being considerate of your partner's needs and wishes, not just your own.

Speaker A:

Showing in the small decisions of every day that your partner's experience of their life actually matters to you.

Speaker A:

For Shane and Beck, the work was gradual.

Speaker A:

Shane started by identifying the specific ways he'd let Beck down, the promises he'd made and not kept, the times he'd been less present than she needed, and changing those behaviors one by one, not as some kind of performance of trustworthiness, but as a genuine commitment to being different.

Speaker A:

Beck told me several months in I'm starting to believe it.

Speaker A:

Not because he said anything, because he kept doing it.

Speaker A:

That's how trust works.

Speaker A:

It's built in the doing, not the saying.

Speaker A:

So here's something to sit with today.

Speaker A:

Pick one of those five being there, honest communication, staying calm, openness or consideration.

Speaker A:

And ask yourself honestly, where am I in this?

Speaker A:

Is there one area where I could show my partner through action today that they can rely on me?

Speaker A:

Because couples who actively build trust don't just survive difficulties.

Speaker A:

They develop a relationship that feels genuinely safe, where both people know, not just hope, that the other person can be counted on.

Speaker A:

And that foundation of trust allows everything else in a relationship to thrive.

Speaker A:

So build trust today, one consistent action at a time.

Speaker A:

Now, one new relationship habit is a start, but here's what might make the biggest difference for your relationship right now.
