On today's episode Evan discusses water filters, their effectiveness, and their relevance in the context of improving health. He highlights the importance of filtered water and provides his recommendations on water filters for remove possible impurities even if the tap water seems clean.

Evan even covers the reverse osmosis systems Aqua Tru, which is the one that he personally uses given its affordability and effectiveness in water purification. He emphasizes the importance of remineralizing the water after purification, and evaluates the effectiveness of alkaline water, suggesting that its benefits may not be as impactful as some may make it seem. He stresses the importance of maintaining an acidic stomach while consuming food and minimizing water consumption around meals.

Last but not least Evan also recommends his favorite hacks for intermittent fasting that include water, LMNT, and/or spirulina from Energybits.

Speaker:

So our water filters, a load of BS,

or are they actually effective in

2

:

cleaning our water and making our water?

3

:

Not necessarily more palatable,

but actually better for

4

:

our bodies by consuming it.

5

:

And if these water filters are not

just a load of BS and they actually

6

:

do work, which ones are actually

going to be the best ones for us to

7

:

use in terms of cost and in terms of.

8

:

Efficacy for removing

impurities from the water.

9

:

All of that and more on today's episode.

10

:

This is the elemental oven podcast.

11

:

And this is your host, Evan Roberts.

12

:

And on this show, I break down health

topics from a holistic and simplified

13

:

perspective so that you can walk away

from these episodes with actionable steps

14

:

that you can actually apply to your life

and take health back into your control.

15

:

But above all of that, I am honestly,

just a person who really cares

16

:

about my health and your health.

17

:

And this is my way of giving

back to everyone because it

18

:

is definitely the thing that I

wish I had when I was younger.

19

:

So hopefully you are able to take

something away from this podcast

20

:

today, which is going to be obviously

all about water and water filters.

21

:

So.

22

:

To kick things off.

23

:

Is a water filter effective.

24

:

Yes.

25

:

The short answer is definitely

yes, you a hundred percent.

26

:

Want to filter your water.

27

:

, luckily if you live in a somewhat or very

modern country, then you probably have

28

:

pretty clean water wherever you live, at

least to the point that you can drink it.

29

:

And it's not going to make you sick

or at least not sick immediately.

30

:

But.

31

:

The real concern kind of starts to rise.

32

:

When we start to talk about things

like, chlorine and fluoride, and even

33

:

actually trace amounts of pharmaceuticals,

making their way into our waterways,

34

:

as well as a bunch of other weird

things that could be in there possibly

35

:

leaching from the pipelines themselves.

36

:

That are transporting

the water to our faucets.

37

:

So if you're like me, I am someone who

grew up drinking straight out of the

38

:

hose, straight out of the garden hose, um,

playing out on the street and just every

39

:

time he got thirsty, you run over, throw

the hose on and drink straight out of it.

40

:

Probably not the best idea.

41

:

Of course, it's not going to

kill you, or at least it's not

42

:

going to do so immediately.

43

:

It might have health effects over

time, if you're asking me, I do

44

:

believe that a lot of the things that

are added into our waterways, or,

45

:

sorry, not our waterways, but actually

the water that we're consuming.

46

:

Is not necessary as

well as not good for us.

47

:

And so there's a saying that if you don't

use a filter, you become the filter.

48

:

And unfortunately there's a

lot of bad things that probably

49

:

shouldn't be in our water.

50

:

And therefore I do not want

my body purifying the water.

51

:

I would rather have something purify the

water for me, for me to then consume.

52

:

Which leads me to the next big

question of, so if water filters

53

:

are effective, Then what is the

best water filter to be using?

54

:

Well, I will say this.

55

:

I think that you need to meet the water

filter where your budget allows first.

56

:

So if that means just getting

a, I don't know, 30 or $40 Brita

57

:

filter, then maybe you start out

there and then work your way up.

58

:

Um, but definitely doing

something is going to be much,

59

:

much better than doing nothing.

60

:

Now with that said.

61

:

The Brita filter, probably

not the best filter choice.

62

:

Um, especially if you live in a major

city, which I do here in the U S um,

63

:

it's not gonna be the most effective,

and there's going to be a lot of

64

:

stuff that is still going to get past

those filters and into your water.

65

:

So therefore probably not

the best one to be using.

66

:

Um, there are some that are a step above

and of course the more money you spend

67

:

on these filters, typically the better

they're going to be for the most part.

68

:

That's not always true.

69

:

Um, but definitely going a step above that

would be something like along the lines

70

:

of a Berkey filter that's B E R K E Y.

71

:

That is definitely going to be a much,

much better filter than your Brita filter.

72

:

And in fact, it's going to be

league's better than the Brita filter.

73

:

But.

74

:

Even still, I would personally

myself go one step beyond even the

75

:

Berkey filter, which I do believe

the Berkey filter is a great filter.

76

:

So if you have that one, you're

still doing awesome with that.

77

:

But being that I live here in a major

city and there is just honestly,

78

:

There's a lot of stuff in the

water that is just not good for us.

79

:

And.

80

:

Really the most effective way

to get that out of the water is

81

:

to use a reverse osmosis system.

82

:

So personally I use the Aqua Tru

I believe is what's our true Aqua.

83

:

No, I think it's Aqua true.

84

:

Um, and it's a countertop appliance.

85

:

It's relatively affordable because

some of these reverse osmosis systems

86

:

can be a little bit expensive.

87

:

Like literally can even get

into the thousand dollar range.

88

:

Um, the Aqua true.

89

:

I think I got mine.

90

:

And for under $500, like maybe.

91

:

I got it on a cell.

92

:

So I don't remember exactly, but I even

want to say it was under 400, like 300

93

:

and something dollars, which is a really

good price for a reverse osmosis system.

94

:

But what I really like about the

countertop appliance that I have is

95

:

that you can clean out pretty much all

of the compartments, which is a really

96

:

big deal, because if you have a reverse

osmosis system that has a large tank on

97

:

it and is, you know, maybe under your

sink, there tends to be an issue with

98

:

algae overgrowth or just like back.

99

:

I think it's, I think it's bacteria

overgrowth, but you get like this

100

:

green growth and I'll even see it.

101

:

If I don't take good care of my Aqua.

102

:

AquaTru I'll see it start to grow in

some of the, uh, little, little nooks

103

:

and crannies of the water system.

104

:

So then I have to make sure I'm really

cleaning it super well, which typically I

105

:

just do a water and, um, Uh, white vinegar

as well as even a little bit of, uh,

106

:

just dish washing soap to clean that out.

107

:

Um, so I really do like the

fact that I can clean it as

108

:

opposed to the under sink system.

109

:

I think there is a way to clean

it, but it's very difficult.

110

:

You have to have typically

someone come out and service it.

111

:

Uh, which is just not something

that I'm interested in doing.

112

:

I'd rather just be able to do it myself.

113

:

It might be a little bit more tedious.

114

:

But I do really enjoy

the quality of water.

115

:

It tastes really good.

116

:

You can tell it's absolutely

been, you know, um, purified and.

117

:

He definitely has a

very clean taste to it.

118

:

Which is super important, because

like I said, there's just so many

119

:

impurities in the water system here.

120

:

That it's just a good idea to

make sure we're trying to filter

121

:

out as much of that as we can.

122

:

However, there is a kind of flip

side to this as with most things.

123

:

And that is that water is not found

in nature in its pure H2O form because

124

:

water likes to bind with stuff, right.

125

:

It likes.

126

:

Um, you know, it's a solvent, right?

127

:

And so it likes to bind with things.

128

:

And so water in nature is

always with something else,

129

:

typically with minerals, right?

130

:

Because it's running through rivers

and it's picking up these minerals.

131

:

And so naturally water has some

mineral conduit content to it.

132

:

Or M T D S I think stands for total

dissolved solubles, I believe.

133

:

Um, so if you ever drink like spring

water, you can typically look on the

134

:

back of the bottle and it'll say the.

135

:

T D S content.

136

:

Which is definitely a good thing, right?

137

:

We want to have minerals, um, that

are replenishing our body, that

138

:

we're drinking from our water.

139

:

So when you have a reverse osmosis

system and you purify your water, you

140

:

do need to add back in minerals, which

may sound counterproductive here.

141

:

Like you're stripping everything

out to put things back in.

142

:

But really we're just trying

to strip out all the bad stuff

143

:

to put back in the good stuff.

144

:

So you can buy, um, typically they're

called like trace minerals, um,

145

:

Aqua Tru as well, has their own.

146

:

A little blend.

147

:

It's basically, it's literally almost

like concentrated seawater, which is

148

:

just once again, super high in minerals.

149

:

Um, and you can just add a few drops

or however many drops is recommended.

150

:

Into your water jug or your water

container, where you store your water.

151

:

And that way you're, remineralizing your

water because I don't know the actual,

152

:

you know, science backing on this,

but they do say that when you drink.

153

:

You know, purified water, water that has

been stripped of pretty much everything.

154

:

And it's just pure.

155

:

H2O is not good for your body because it

could possibly start to pull minerals out

156

:

of your body because it naturally wants

to bind with other things and wants to.

157

:

Uh, be accompanied by other things, right?

158

:

So for that reason, it is

supposedly not good to drink.

159

:

Just purified water.

160

:

You want to add a little

bit of something in there.

161

:

And for example, if you have a bottle

of purified water that you bought at

162

:

the store, just drop a little bit of

sea salt in there, and it will help to

163

:

add some minerals back into that water.

164

:

So that is a quick little hack that you

can do, but overall, we definitely want

165

:

to try to make sure we're drinking.

166

:

You know, water that has been properly

purified and then adding in the necessary

167

:

minerals that it needs so that we're not

stripping our body, which once again,

168

:

I do not have any science to back that

up and I'm not citing anything on it.

169

:

You can go look up studies.

170

:

Um, I'm sure you could

find some that would.

171

:

You know, justify exactly what I'm saying.

172

:

Uh, but nonetheless, this is just hearsay.

173

:

It's what I've heard from other people.

174

:

And it's an easy

precaution for me to take.

175

:

And nonetheless, what's the harm of

taking some additional minerals, right?

176

:

So that is the type of water

filtration system that I use.

177

:

And that honestly, my wallet will allow,

because once you start going above

178

:

that, it can start to get a little bit

pricey, like for example, I believe

179

:

that spring water is actually one of the

best waters that you can possibly drink.

180

:

It's a natural source of

water that is going to be.

181

:

You know, already containing the minerals

that it should have, and it's going

182

:

to be very hydrating for the body.

183

:

And just overall, I believe Springwater

truly is like one of the most hydrating

184

:

and nourishing waters that we can drink.

185

:

So from time to time, I will grab

some spring water from the store and

186

:

drink a little bit here and there.

187

:

But there are these, you know,

delivery systems where you can get on

188

:

a subscription and they will deliver

spring water to your door by the gallons.

189

:

Um, and that's definitely

a really awesome thing.

190

:

I would love to do that, but

once again, you do start to

191

:

get into a little bit more.

192

:

Uh, money here, but there is a

brand or a company by the name

193

:

of waters alive, I believe, or

alive waters, something like that.

194

:

And they do have a service where

they provide, uh, you know, to

195

:

your door delivery of spring water,

which is really, really cool.

196

:

And honestly, if I was able to,

I would probably go that route.

197

:

But definitely going the

reverse osmosis route.

198

:

Is not a bad idea.

199

:

I think it's something that I would

always have on hand just in case.

200

:

Uh, even if I was doing this spring water.

201

:

And honestly, it's still a

really good form of water.

202

:

Um, I think it's definitely

not even mid range.

203

:

I think it's on the higher

end of making sure you're

204

:

drinking like really good water.

205

:

And then with the top, in my

opinion, being Springwater, uh,

206

:

as being the absolute best type of

water that you could be consuming.

207

:

Once again.

208

:

You have to go find the

research on that one.

209

:

Cause I'm not citing a source on that one.

210

:

Actually the whole reason for

this episode is because I was

211

:

asked multiple times about water.

212

:

Uh, this week.

213

:

And so I figured it would be a good

idea to do an episode on it because

214

:

it's a question I've been getting a lot.

215

:

So I figured why not just make

a podcast episode on it, but

216

:

nonetheless, uh, so yeah, sorry.

217

:

I'm a little bit lax.

218

:

Today's nickel here on the citing

of sources for this episode.

219

:

Um, a lot of this is just what

I've heard throughout, you know, my

220

:

journey here in life and through this.

221

:

Uh, you know, constant research and

studying of health and wellness.

222

:

These are the things that

I've heard regarding water.

223

:

So yeah, in my opinion, spring

water is going to be at the top.

224

:

And of course, that's also going to

vary depending on the source in which

225

:

you're getting the spring water from.

226

:

Right.

227

:

We want to make sure it's a very clean

source, not one that's been tampered

228

:

with, or maybe has a lot of pollutants

in it because of, you know, activity

229

:

going on around the, the spring water.

230

:

Uh, those can also play a factor as well.

231

:

So you do have to take that into.

232

:

Consideration, but I think the

reverse osmosis system is a

233

:

really, really great way to go.

234

:

And it's also quite affordable.

235

:

Um, the filters on the reverse

osmosis system need to be replaced

236

:

about once a year, um, which

absolutely does not break the bank.

237

:

Um, I'm trying to remember how

much they were, but I want to say.

238

:

I think I spent somewhere around 80 to

$90 to replace two of the filters because

239

:

the other filter can last much longer.

240

:

So it's a pretty

affordable route for sure.

241

:

Um, yeah, so definitely highly recommend

that or the Springwater, but then once

242

:

again, just meet yourself wherever you

can and wherever your money allows.

243

:

Uh, but definitely using a filter

is going to be a benefit, even

244

:

if it's the lowest, the low.

245

:

A Brita filter, right?

246

:

Like that's still going to be

better than having nothing.

247

:

Now I also wanted to talk about

one other topic here that I

248

:

do get a lot of questions on.

249

:

And I was asked about this week as well.

250

:

And that is about alkaline water.

251

:

So to be fair, I actually,

haven't done a crazy amount

252

:

of research on alkaline water.

253

:

But from what I have seen, at least in

the small amount of research or, you

254

:

know, podcasts that I have listened to.

255

:

Is essentially that.

256

:

Alkaline water.

257

:

May be beneficial for the body,

but there really isn't super hard

258

:

evidence on it are at least from what

I've heard, because when you drink

259

:

alkaline water, Your stomach is acidic.

260

:

And so when you drink alkaline water, the

first thing that's going to happen is that

261

:

water is going to become acidic because

it's entering an acidic environment, which

262

:

your stomach is very, very acidic, right?

263

:

And your stomach will produce

more hydrochloric acid and

264

:

make a more acidic environment.

265

:

Even if you pour, uh, some of this,

you know, alkaline water in there.

266

:

And in general, your body has, um, the

ability to alkalize itself by using,

267

:

uh, different minerals throughout.

268

:

The body and wherever the acidity

is needed, that's where it will go.

269

:

So from what I've heard.

270

:

Drinking alkaline water, probably isn't

really fully doing what they're saying

271

:

in terms of like alkalizing the body.

272

:

I think.

273

:

More, so.

274

:

Having like an alkaline diet

would probably be more effective.

275

:

Uh, if you were really concerned

with making your body more alkaline.

276

:

Um, but nonetheless, you know what

go with whatever route works for you.

277

:

Um, I know there's a few brands out there.

278

:

Like the Kangen water

is one of the big ones.

279

:

Um, You know, it's a water

filter, so that's good.

280

:

You know, at least you're

like filtering your water.

281

:

Like that's definitely a benefit, right?

282

:

Like regardless of the alkaline, uh,

You know, portion of the water, it's

283

:

at least filtered, which is going

to be, uh, definitely a benefit.

284

:

And in terms of the alkaline.

285

:

Properties of the water.

286

:

If it's really benefiting us.

287

:

Personally, I don't think so.

288

:

Um, I mean, that's just my opinion on it.

289

:

I don't really believe that it is

really super beneficial for the body.

290

:

Maybe I'm wrong.

291

:

It could be somewhat beneficial.

292

:

Um, but just from what I've heard and

from the small research that I have

293

:

done, it doesn't seem like alkaline water

really has a huge effect on your health.

294

:

Um, but nonetheless, if that's the

route you want to go and it makes

295

:

you consume more water than, Hey,

that's definitely a good route to go.

296

:

I would say one thing though,

do not drink alkaline water.

297

:

Near the time in which you're

eating food, because once

298

:

again, your stomach is acidic.

299

:

And if you do consume some alkaline

water, or even just kind of like water in

300

:

general, they typically say to you, no.

301

:

Wait about 30 minutes before and

after eating, before drinking water.

302

:

Um, and that is because it will

slightly lower your stomach acidity

303

:

your pH level and make it slightly

harder to digest the foods.

304

:

So typically if you're drinking any

kind of water, um, around a meal, you

305

:

want to wait 30 minutes before and

30 minutes after consuming food to

306

:

make sure you're not really messing

with the digestion, um, and making

307

:

sure that your pH levels stay high so

that it can digest the food properly.

308

:

And break it down in and assimilate

it and all that good stuff.

309

:

So that's just in general with any

kind of water that you're drinking,

310

:

but even more specifically, I guess,

with the alkaline water, um, because

311

:

we do want to keep our stomach acidic

when it comes to consuming food.

312

:

Uh, but yeah, that's pretty

much the rap on alkaline water,

313

:

in my opinion, probably not.

314

:

Really as effective as they say it

is, but I could totally be wrong.

315

:

Um, I haven't done enough

research on it to really have

316

:

a super strong opinion on it.

317

:

And honestly, if it makes you

consume more water than by all means,

318

:

feel free to drink alkaline water.

319

:

I'd be happy to see you just at

least consuming more filtered

320

:

water as opposed to not.

321

:

So that is where I'm going

to put the point on alkaline

322

:

water and its effectiveness.

323

:

And honestly, that is where I'm

going to wrap up this episode.

324

:

It's a little bit of a shorter episode

today, but I really wanted to give

325

:

a quick talk on water and the kind

of water that I drink and the water

326

:

filtration system that I personally use.

327

:

Um, so the big takeaways from this

episode is definitely going to be, to

328

:

use a water filter, regardless of which

one it is better to use one than not.

329

:

Because if you don't use a water

filter, you become the water filter.

330

:

Um, in my opinion, a reverse osmosis

system, one like the Aqua Tru

331

:

is going to be really beneficial

because you can also clean it out.

332

:

Uh, to avoid any of that, like,

I think it's like an allergy,

333

:

uh, growth that can happen.

334

:

And then if you can, Springwater

definitely in my opinion is going

335

:

to be the best water you consume.

336

:

And in terms of alkaline water, probably

not as effective as they say it is, but

337

:

if it makes you drink more filtered water,

then by all means, feel free to drink it.

338

:

And I think it's going to be of

benefit as opposed to not drinking.

339

:

The filtered water and staying hydrated.

340

:

So definitely would recommend doing that.

341

:

And also just a quick tip on hydration.

342

:

If you are a person who struggles with

hydration, or even if you are fasting

343

:

a lot and you typically get a little

bit lightheaded, um, in the morning

344

:

because you are fasting, I would highly

recommend trying out the element packets.

345

:

That's L M N T.

346

:

These can really help out with,

uh, making sure that you don't get

347

:

super lightheaded because it has

literally all the electrolytes that

348

:

you would need and nothing more.

349

:

Um, they use, I think.

350

:

Is it Stevia?

351

:

I can't remember what kind of sweetener

they use, but it's one that doesn't

352

:

spike the blood glucose levels.

353

:

So you can even take it while you're

fasting, which is really awesome.

354

:

Um, another thing that I've done as

well is I have taken the energy bits.

355

:

Uh, the spirulina energy bits.

356

:

So sorry, spirulina from energy bits.

357

:

Um, that's my personal favorite company

in terms of spirulina and chlorella.

358

:

I really, really love those

products and they have a ton of

359

:

vitamins and minerals in them.

360

:

And if you keep the amount of energy

bits that you consume or spirulina or

361

:

chlorella, um, to a minimum, then it

will not spike your levels too high.

362

:

And supposedly you can still

stay in a fasted state even with.

363

:

I'm consuming a few of them, like

maybe let's say five or six of them.

364

:

And that may also help with keeping you

from getting that kind of like faint

365

:

NIS that you might feel, uh, throughout

the early parts of your morning.

366

:

If you are fasting, I have tried that

and it has worked for me as well.

367

:

So I kind of bounced between the two

from the element to the, uh, specifically

368

:

I use spirulina from energy bits.

369

:

And, um, that usually helps me out so

that I don't get too faint when I'm.

370

:

Uh, going about my day early on, because

some days I will fast until like 12

371

:

o'clock and, you know, there are some

times where if I don't have element or

372

:

the spirulina, then I can start to feel

a little bit light headed and, uh, I'll

373

:

have to quickly find some way to, uh,

get like, you know, some electrolytes

374

:

in my system or something like that.

375

:

So, um, that's going to be my tip on that.

376

:

Uh, if you wanted to try out the

spirulina energy bits, go ahead and

377

:

check out the website, have it in the

description of this episode and you get

378

:

a 20% discount off of your entire order.

379

:

That's just for being

a listener to the show.

380

:

And that's my way of saying

thank you to all of you.

381

:

And honestly, it's truly just

one of my favorite companies.

382

:

Um, I'm so happy to be

partnered with them.

383

:

And Katherine Orenstein, the

founder is super awesome.

384

:

Hetero in the show.

385

:

A few times feel free to

listen to those episodes.

386

:

And get educated on micro-algae.

387

:

Uh, but yeah, so feel

free to check those out.

388

:

And I think that's going

to do it in terms of water.

389

:

So hopefully this was of benefit

and you have something to take away

390

:

from this episode and hopefully

it is to start using a filter.

391

:

Um, if you take one thing

away, Definitely be that.

392

:

Um, and yeah, that's going

to do it for today's episode.

393

:

So I hope you all enjoyed,

thank you for tuning in on this

394

:
