Coco Salman:

Yay, me too, me too.

Coco Salman:

And, and for everybody listening, Jenny has an just an over the top great podcast.

Coco Salman:

You must go and listen to it.

Coco Salman:

Women and AI.

Coco Salman:

You will love, love, love being a listener and the stories and you'll learn.

Coco Salman:

Every week you learn something new and sometimes it's, it's a founder and a technology that's really, you know, kind of bleeding edge and other times it's, it's, it's a little more just getting, you know, simple tools and it's just all around a great resource I've found for getting to know what's happening in AI.

Jenny K. Pollock:

Thank you, Coco.

Jenny K. Pollock:

Yeah, we spend a lot of time thinking about it in two different ways.

Jenny K. Pollock:

So there's the on ramp to AI and how can we make it seem more approachable and more fun and make it available to everyone.

Jenny K. Pollock:

And then of course there's also, you know, that next layer of if you're already in it, if you're already using it, how can we actually help you level up your skills?

Jenny K. Pollock:

Whether that is you're building an LLM or you want help fine tuning your model, or you're saying, hey, how do I actually open ChatGPT for the first time?

Jenny K. Pollock:

How do I prompt it?

Jenny K. Pollock:

What is a prompt?

Jenny K. Pollock:

You know, and that's okay.

Jenny K. Pollock:

So we're trying to create this space for.

Jenny K. Pollock:

For both and.

Jenny K. Pollock:

And we do a lot of that in the women in AI community.

Coco Salman:

I just love it.

Coco Salman:

I.

Coco Salman:

And again, everybody just listen, listening, Please go and check it out.

Coco Salman:

It's a great way to just.

Coco Salman:

If you're not, if you don't have time to invest, which most of us don't, in all the things that are happening, this is a nice way to.

Coco Salman:

To learn about it a little bit at a time in a very friendly and.

Coco Salman:

And heartwarming way.

Coco Salman:

So.

Coco Salman:

So, Jenny, I'm curious for you to tell us a book written by a woman that has significantly influenced your life.

Jenny K. Pollock:

Yeah.

Jenny K. Pollock:

So I am an avid reader and I love memoirs and I love to read them and learn.

Jenny K. Pollock:

And so this book isn't exactly a memoir, but it's memoir adjacent and it's called the Worlds I See Curiosity, Exploration and Discovery at the dawn of AI.

Jenny K. Pollock:

And you can get that everywhere.

Jenny K. Pollock:

I listen to it on audiobook because I like to listen while I'm on the go, whether I'm driving or taking the dog for a walk.

Jenny K. Pollock:

But it's really interesting because it weaves together Dr.

Jenny K. Pollock:

Fay Fei Li's life experience and that memoir capacity.

Jenny K. Pollock:

So you can see her, know, growing up and immigrating to the US and her work here, basically they call her the godmother of AI.

Jenny K. Pollock:

So her work here really helping birth and found this field that we're all working in.

Jenny K. Pollock:

And then juxtaposed to that, it actually talks about the technical piece behind it.

Jenny K. Pollock:

And so I highly, highly recommend it.

Jenny K. Pollock:

I actually think it should be a must read in high schools across the country.

Coco Salman:

Wow.

Jenny K. Pollock:

Yeah.

Jenny K. Pollock:

Everyone's going to be impacted by AI.

Jenny K. Pollock:

They actually already are.

Jenny K. Pollock:

And this book provides a deep understanding of how it came into existence and sort of the workings behind it, but in a way that's easy to understand.

Jenny K. Pollock:

So I highly recommend it.

Jenny K. Pollock:

Check it out and also let me know what you think.

Jenny K. Pollock:

I'm kind of doing this like, informal book club.

Jenny K. Pollock:

I told my community that we'd read it and do an episode on it, so we're going to.

Jenny K. Pollock:

But I'm giving everyone some time to read it.

Jenny K. Pollock:

And I'd love to chat about it with anyone who picks it up and actually reads.

Coco Salman:

I totally will.

Coco Salman:

This sounds like totally my jam.

Coco Salman:

And I'm with you.

Coco Salman:

I love audiobooks.

Coco Salman:

I'm sort of addicted.

Coco Salman:

And it's nice because you can, like, you can, you can be driving, you can be doing dishes, you can be doing the laundry, you can be on the treadmill, whatever.

Coco Salman:

Right?

Coco Salman:

And, yeah, and you can be soaking up whatever.

Coco Salman:

It could be stories, it could be new information, learnings.

Coco Salman:

The World I see by Dr.

Coco Salman:

Faith Ali sounds like a must, a must read.

Coco Salman:

And I, I'm excited.

Coco Salman:

I'll watch for that on your, on your podcast because that's, I'm curious to participate in that part of your community as well in this conversation.

Coco Salman:

So very cool.

Coco Salman:

So we'd love to have you.

Jenny K. Pollock:

That'll be so much fun.

Coco Salman:

Yes, I would love that.

Coco Salman:

So you have had a.

Coco Salman:

You know, you are such.

Coco Salman:

What I found about you in my time of getting to know you is that you are a very down to earth, grounded, open, caring person.

Coco Salman:

And at the same time, you're, you're a lady dragon slayer.

Jenny K. Pollock:

Like, absolutely.

Coco Salman:

You really are.

Coco Salman:

Like, you've done some really cool things and, and you've helped some companies grow and you have some very, very rich experience and the people that know you love you and have a very high regard for you.

Coco Salman:

So tell us a little bit about your journey and the pivotal, the pivotal, pivotal moments that have led you to this moment and what you're working on.

Jenny K. Pollock:

Yeah.

Jenny K. Pollock:

So I think in a career there's a lot.

Jenny K. Pollock:

Right.

Jenny K. Pollock:

There are so many different things.

Jenny K. Pollock:

And ironically, this one I wanted to share with you here today is with another book called the Launchpad Inside Y Combinator, and it's by Randall E.

Jenny K. Pollock:

Strauss.

Jenny K. Pollock:

And I was listening an audiobook to this while I was doing this sales job in the middle of nowhere, Wisconsin, driving around, visiting my clients, and I was listening to it and I go, wow, they're giving out money for ideas.

Jenny K. Pollock:

I didn't know that was a thing.

Jenny K. Pollock:

I want to go there.

Jenny K. Pollock:

Like, I want to go and not be here and be there.

Jenny K. Pollock:

And I want to watch it.

Jenny K. Pollock:

Like, I just want to be next to this.

Jenny K. Pollock:

This seems really cool, this startup thing.

Jenny K. Pollock:

And so, you know, my partner and I moved out here and that was like a decade ago almost.

Jenny K. Pollock:

And I had the goal, like, I want to work at a Y Combinator startup.

Jenny K. Pollock:

And I did.

Jenny K. Pollock:

And it was fun and I learned so much.

Jenny K. Pollock:

It's real.

Jenny K. Pollock:

It's been a roller coaster from startups you know, running out of money to leading high performing teams to crushing revenue goals.

Jenny K. Pollock:

You know the other one that really sticks, another pivotal piece in that roller coaster per se, was my first time speaking at like an executive off site.

Jenny K. Pollock:

My first time creating a deck for the board of directors.

Jenny K. Pollock:

I'm like, oh, here's a new game, like here, here's a new layer to this startup world.

Jenny K. Pollock:

And so that's been a lot of fun doing that.

Jenny K. Pollock:

And then this year I got to be an international speaker.

Jenny K. Pollock:

So speaking in Calgary at Mesh Conference and at features ASO Summit in Berlin.

Jenny K. Pollock:

So, you know, there's been a lot of fun things, but there's a lot more fun to come, I'm sure.

Coco Salman:

So you are getting invited to speak everywhere.

Coco Salman:

Your voice is just so, I think, needed and necessary.

Coco Salman:

I know you've been on the speaking sort of journey over this last few months, right?

Coco Salman:

And more to come.

Jenny K. Pollock:

Yeah, absolutely.

Jenny K. Pollock:

And I think that for me one of the things is, you know, I go to these events and sometimes there aren't that many women on stage.

Jenny K. Pollock:

You know, I was at a conference a while ago and it was a three day conference and there wasn't a woman on the main stage until the second day at noon, which is just upsetting, you know, and it's like, oh, there, there were some women speaking, but they were like in the small stage in the back in the corner.

Jenny K. Pollock:

And so it's just really frustrating.

Jenny K. Pollock:

And you know, when I left, I chatted to the organizers, I said, hey, like, we can have a growth opportunity here.

Jenny K. Pollock:

And like, there's all this research that shows diverse teams perform better.

Jenny K. Pollock:

Same thing at the conference, right?

Jenny K. Pollock:

And I'm like, hey, I have this community.

Jenny K. Pollock:

If you need speakers next year, reach out and like, here's a list of 10 right now that I know would be happy to, to speak.

Jenny K. Pollock:

And so I think that's something that, you know, I try and do and lead by example and when possible, really try and bring others with me.

Jenny K. Pollock:

Like, I want to have all of us sharing our voice out there, especially as we're creating this next era of computing, as we're deciding how and when AI will be used.

Jenny K. Pollock:

I want everyone's voice to be invited.

Coco Salman:

I completely agree with you and Jenny.

Coco Salman:

It's, it's so important, right?

Coco Salman:

Because the, the voice and wisdom, the values of women right now is needed in this AI space.

Coco Salman:

It's, it's needed and it's also there.

Coco Salman:

We're not, you know, it's not like, it's not like there's anyone who's really far ahead and others that are really far behind.

Coco Salman:

Right.

Coco Salman:

You.

Coco Salman:

You can, you can dive in today and still, like, be at the.

Coco Salman:

At the bleeding edge if you so choose.

Coco Salman:

Right?

Jenny K. Pollock:

Absolutely.

Jenny K. Pollock:

And the thing is, it's changing so fast.

Jenny K. Pollock:

What we were talking about literally two weeks ago is completely different than what we're talking about now in the women in the community.

Jenny K. Pollock:

Right.

Jenny K. Pollock:

These things change.

Jenny K. Pollock:

And even when you think you found the perfect model, Right.

Jenny K. Pollock:

PI is my favorite PI.

Jenny K. Pollock:

AI.

Jenny K. Pollock:

I was going on and on about that for months.

Jenny K. Pollock:

And you know what?

Jenny K. Pollock:

It's great.

Jenny K. Pollock:

It has more emotional intelligence and can kind of speak to you.

Jenny K. Pollock:

But a new model comes out and you're like, whoa, wait a second now.

Jenny K. Pollock:

Perplexity has more, you know, emotional intelligence baked in.

Jenny K. Pollock:

Or I can prompt it and ask it to use more emotional intelligence and it cites its sources.

Jenny K. Pollock:

And so now I'm like, oh, I'm so excited about Perplexity.

Jenny K. Pollock:

And so it comes in waves, right?

Coco Salman:

And it does.

Coco Salman:

It does.

Coco Salman:

Yeah.

Jenny K. Pollock:

And jump in.

Jenny K. Pollock:

Like, the pool's warm, it's fun.

Jenny K. Pollock:

Like, come play and experiment.

Jenny K. Pollock:

And you know what?

Jenny K. Pollock:

It doesn't have to be a big scary thing.

Jenny K. Pollock:

And you don't even have to know what LLM means.

Jenny K. Pollock:

Like, it's large language model.

Jenny K. Pollock:

But you don't need to know what it means and how it works to participate.

Jenny K. Pollock:

Right.

Jenny K. Pollock:

You can jump right in.

Jenny K. Pollock:

Very similar to, I don't know how my car works.

Jenny K. Pollock:

Right.

Jenny K. Pollock:

Like, you know that it needs to have fuel and go.

Jenny K. Pollock:

But I don't actually know what happens, but I can drive it just fine.

Coco Salman:

Exactly.

Coco Salman:

And the more you use it, it's like a language.

Coco Salman:

The more you use it, the.

Coco Salman:

The more you discover all the different tricks and tools and ways you can.

Coco Salman:

You can do it, do different things with it.

Jenny K. Pollock:

Yeah.

Jenny K. Pollock:

And it's a muscle.

Jenny K. Pollock:

One of them fun little prompt tricks.

Jenny K. Pollock:

I wanted to share with you, Coco, is if you for it, you say, hey, I'll give you $5 if you help me, it will perform a little bit better, a little bit more thorough.

Jenny K. Pollock:

So you can bribe the AI to help you.

Coco Salman:

I've never heard that.

Coco Salman:

That's amazing.

Coco Salman:

But I will say, Jenny, that you're right.

Coco Salman:

Even like the tools I.

Coco Salman:

That I kind of, I use, I use Perplexity in chat quite a bit.

Coco Salman:

Hi, AI.

Coco Salman:

I haven't used.

Coco Salman:

I'll try that.

Coco Salman:

I've used Claude.

Coco Salman:

Right.

Coco Salman:

And then there's all these other specific little tools that are out there for, you know, for different specific functions that are beautiful.

Coco Salman:

AI Magical.

Coco Salman:

I hadn't been able to figure that out.

Coco Salman:

I'm gonna.

Coco Salman:

I am.

Coco Salman:

I'm gonna figure it out.

Coco Salman:

But, like, there's all these different, different tools that you can use and they change.

Coco Salman:

Like, for a while it was like I wasn't getting what I wanted from one of the platforms and then I kind of went away from it and then I came back to it and I was like, oh, it's gotten a lot better.

Coco Salman:

Right?

Jenny K. Pollock:

Yeah.

Jenny K. Pollock:

There are people behind the scenes working on this.

Jenny K. Pollock:

Right.

Jenny K. Pollock:

They're fine tuning the models, they're training them differently, they're switching out the model.

Jenny K. Pollock:

And that means that just because, like, say you don't like what you're getting from Chat GPT today, doesn't mean you won't tomorrow.

Jenny K. Pollock:

Actually, with the release of 4O, it actually was a bit more emotional intelligence like I was talking about with Pie.

Jenny K. Pollock:

So it's just, it's fun to see how they evolve and change.

Jenny K. Pollock:

And the one that everyone's talking about right now is Notebook.

Jenny K. Pollock:

LM out of Google.

Jenny K. Pollock:

You can put in any information you want, so website PDF and it'll actually make a little podcast for you.

Jenny K. Pollock:

So you can turn anything into an audio version, which is pretty fun.

Jenny K. Pollock:

I've been playing with that, and one I haven't got to try yet is called Napkin AI.

Jenny K. Pollock:

My friend Pallavi Sharma recommends it and so that's on my list.

Jenny K. Pollock:

Hopefully this week I'll get to play with it.

Coco Salman:

Isn't that fun?

Coco Salman:

There's just always, you know, a little a new thing to.

Coco Salman:

To experiment with and see how you can, you can get into it.

Coco Salman:

So AI offers so much potential for business growth.

Coco Salman:

Right.

Coco Salman:

So can you share how you leveraged AI technology in your work or with clients to boost revenue or improve customer experiences?

Jenny K. Pollock:

Yeah.

Jenny K. Pollock:

So I use AI to supercharge almost every aspect of my work.

Jenny K. Pollock:

However, I'm not outsourcing it.

Jenny K. Pollock:

Right.

Jenny K. Pollock:

I'm not just saying here, can you answer it and copy paste?

Jenny K. Pollock:

Like, that's not what happens on my end.

Jenny K. Pollock:

Most of the posts I write on social are probably 80% Jenny and 20% AI.

Jenny K. Pollock:

So I'll help it have me like, I'll have it help me re word something or come up with a synonym.

Jenny K. Pollock:

If I notice I use the same word a bunch.

Jenny K. Pollock:

I will also have it help with like the hook.

Jenny K. Pollock:

There's a lot of different tools out there that can help you.

Jenny K. Pollock:

You know, there's a lot of research on what grabs people's attention and it can use that to help you write it.

Jenny K. Pollock:

And then I'll edit it.

Jenny K. Pollock:

Sometimes I'm like, whoa, I don't like that.

Jenny K. Pollock:

Let me, let me redo it.

Jenny K. Pollock:

Or, oh, that's a good idea.

Jenny K. Pollock:

It made me think of this.

Jenny K. Pollock:

So using it in collaboration is really important.

Jenny K. Pollock:

I was going to share an example.

Jenny K. Pollock:

That presentation I did in Berlin for ASO Summit, which is App Store optimization, basically, how do you get your app to show up higher in the search results?

Jenny K. Pollock:

And I needed a closing line that my audience would remember.

Jenny K. Pollock:

Like, I wanted to have a really, like, strong ending.

Jenny K. Pollock:

So I applied some writing techniques from Mark Forset.

Jenny K. Pollock:

He's a writer.

Jenny K. Pollock:

I think his name is called the Inky fool online.

Jenny K. Pollock:

Like, he has all these techniques and, you know, he studies Shakespeare and he's really into all these things I don't have time to be into.

Jenny K. Pollock:

But I read his book and I asked ChatGPT, I said, hey, can you take the stuff from his book and actually apply it to some of the things that I've created in this presentation and see if we can come up with a good line?

Jenny K. Pollock:

And so what we came up with together, like Chat, GPT and I, in partnership, was let AI handle the mundane so you can handle the extraordinary.

Coco Salman:

I love that.

Coco Salman:

So it's like.

Coco Salman:

And it's, it's, it's the collaboration that leads you to this.

Coco Salman:

It's not that you've turned your creativity and your thinking and your ingenuity over, right?

Coco Salman:

Not at all.

Coco Salman:

It's actually helped you elevate your creativity and innovation because it's.

Coco Salman:

You're.

Coco Salman:

You have a partner, right?

Jenny K. Pollock:

Yes.

Jenny K. Pollock:

Brainstorm with and they, you know, it never gets tired.

Jenny K. Pollock:

If you want to ask it questions at whatever time of day you can, and if you don't like the answer, you can argue with it.

Jenny K. Pollock:

I argue with it all the time.

Jenny K. Pollock:

I iterate with it.

Jenny K. Pollock:

And the best part is, is that line that we came up with together, me and the AI, I still use it almost weekly like I used it in other presentations.

Jenny K. Pollock:

I say it again.

Coco Salman:

I just want to.

Coco Salman:

I want to log it.

Coco Salman:

Say it again.

Jenny K. Pollock:

Yeah, Let AI handle the mundane so you can handle the extraordinary.

Coco Salman:

I think that's exactly the way we should be thinking about AI, right?

Coco Salman:

Yes.

Coco Salman:

Yeah, yeah.

Jenny K. Pollock:

Absolutely.

Coco Salman:

So, so you're finding ways to, to, to leverage this in your communications, and that's helping you communicate on, on whatever platforms or in a speech or what have you, other ways that you're seeing companies use AI to help them with marketing, conversion rates, selling.

Jenny K. Pollock:

So there's a lot of different tools out there that you can use, and a lot of companies are offering these AI Powered tools to help, you know, push your conversion rates.

Jenny K. Pollock:

And those are great.

Jenny K. Pollock:

But what I would recommend any organization doing is starting by identifying the bottlenecks in your org.

Jenny K. Pollock:

Where are people getting stuck?

Jenny K. Pollock:

Who's waiting for someone to approve this thing because they're too busy or, you know, what is your team complaining about?

Jenny K. Pollock:

What is your team hate doing?

Jenny K. Pollock:

What's that thing they dread?

Jenny K. Pollock:

Is there a report that they dread pulling or, you know, figure out where that time suck is and that stressor and then back in the.

Jenny K. Pollock:

To the solution.

Jenny K. Pollock:

Like, don't start with the AI solution.

Jenny K. Pollock:

It's not like a magic bullet that's going to cure everything, but what it is, is actually a tool that you can use.

Jenny K. Pollock:

A tool, your tool belt, and you can decide how and when to use it.

Jenny K. Pollock:

So find that use case, find the problem and then the solution.

Jenny K. Pollock:

And when you're doing that, it's easier if you have a community to help you learn.

Jenny K. Pollock:

And we do a lot of that in women in AI, but there's a ton out there.

Jenny K. Pollock:

Find one that fits for you.

Jenny K. Pollock:

You know, we always welcome our allies, but maybe there's one that's local.

Jenny K. Pollock:

Maybe there's one that, you know, is meeting in person on meetup once a week in your community.

Jenny K. Pollock:

You know, whatever fits for you is really where you should go to learn together.

Jenny K. Pollock:

One of my friends, Tara Bonhurst, she has a company called do that Dave, and she recently hosted a ama, like how would you need with AI and ask me anything you want on this topic.

Jenny K. Pollock:

And it was so great.

Jenny K. Pollock:

I had this specific thing I was trying to do.

Jenny K. Pollock:

I was trying to make my LinkedIn profile a little bit more snazzy.

Jenny K. Pollock:

And I asked her how to do it, and she came back.

Jenny K. Pollock:

She's like, hey, here's these three tools I know about.

Jenny K. Pollock:

Use them, download all of your information off LinkedIn and then send it through this AI and have it spit out some answers and make these tweaks.

Jenny K. Pollock:

And it was like, oh, I had never heard that.

Jenny K. Pollock:

Just like when you and I were talking earlier, Coco, you were listing some.

Jenny K. Pollock:

I'm like, oh, okay, I got to take notes.

Jenny K. Pollock:

I'm going to try this one out.

Jenny K. Pollock:

You know, that kind of thing is really.

Jenny K. Pollock:

That's where the magic happens.

Coco Salman:

It is.

Coco Salman:

And doing it, you know, in concert with others is, is so much fun.

Coco Salman:

I feel like this is.

Coco Salman:

This is sort of a cool time for, for AI where there is like all these little.

Coco Salman:

It's like little plants coming up all over, right?

Coco Salman:

It's like springtime and you want to go and try them all out.

Coco Salman:

And it won't be like this forever, right?

Coco Salman:

It really won't.

Coco Salman:

It's gonna.

Coco Salman:

We're all gonna get really used to it, and there's gonna be ones that really take off and others that don't.

Coco Salman:

But now is the time when everybody's sort of still very fascinated.

Coco Salman:

And there's all kinds of ways to use it.

Coco Salman:

As you said, it's cures for a bottleneck or a problem.

Coco Salman:

And what you're saying makes so much sense because regardless of whether you're thinking about growing your company using AI or you're just thinking about growing your company, it's the first best place to look is where is there friction?

Coco Salman:

Right.

Jenny K. Pollock:

Yes.

Jenny K. Pollock:

Where.

Coco Salman:

Where is there a bottleneck?

Coco Salman:

What's holding back?

Coco Salman:

Right.

Coco Salman:

And sometimes that's the first place to start.

Coco Salman:

Right.

Coco Salman:

Figure out what are my bottlenecks, what are my problems.

Coco Salman:

Let's just brainstorm and list and then say, which.

Coco Salman:

What are our top three?

Coco Salman:

Right.

Coco Salman:

And then say, okay, how could I help us with that?

Jenny K. Pollock:

That's perfect, Coco.

Jenny K. Pollock:

I mean, I feel like if you're a company using that lens, you're going to go far.

Jenny K. Pollock:

Like, imagine just being able to reduce one of your bottlenecks by 20%.

Jenny K. Pollock:

Like, that's massive.

Coco Salman:

Massive.

Coco Salman:

Right.

Coco Salman:

Like if you could reduce the cost of your invoicing or you could reduce the cost, like, whatever, or you could speed up the time to deliver something.

Coco Salman:

Right.

Coco Salman:

Like those, Those tweaks are the ones that create the companies that can last.

Jenny K. Pollock:

Absolutely.

Coco Salman:

So I'm wondering if you could.

Coco Salman:

Because I'm always fascinated when I.

Coco Salman:

When I listen to your show.

Coco Salman:

I.

Coco Salman:

It's.

Coco Salman:

It's like, again, I'm imagining this.

Coco Salman:

This garden with all these little flowers coming up, all these different companies that are doing all different kinds of things in AI.

Coco Salman:

So I'm wondering if you could just give us three or four examples of AI companies doing some pretty, like, revolutionary things.

Coco Salman:

Maybe pull from healthcare, finance, E commerce, manufacturing, agriculture, energy, supply chain, whatever comes to your mind.

Coco Salman:

Just to give our brains, like, some of some.

Coco Salman:

Some possibilities and imagination around what's happening.

Jenny K. Pollock:

Yeah, I love that.

Jenny K. Pollock:

And you know, using your garden analogy, like, I feel like I'm kind of like skipping through the garden and picking a few flowers to share with you.

Jenny K. Pollock:

So the first one is Conversa.

Jenny K. Pollock:

It is a company that helps with hir.

Jenny K. Pollock:

And my friend Melinda Kohler Johnson, she runs it, and basically they're using AI to actually reduce bias in the hiring process, which I think is so cool.

Coco Salman:

Because I think so too.

Coco Salman:

She was on your show, right?

Jenny K. Pollock:

She was.

Jenny K. Pollock:

Yes, yes.

Jenny K. Pollock:

Yeah.

Jenny K. Pollock:

So basically she uses it to reduce some of the things that could cause bias.

Jenny K. Pollock:

So for example, if my resume goes in, you know, it says Jenny K.

Jenny K. Pollock:

Pollock and you can tell based off my name that I'm probably a female.

Jenny K. Pollock:

And that could bias somebody whether they know it or not.

Jenny K. Pollock:

And so they take, they'll redact names.

Jenny K. Pollock:

It'll actually do things to help match the candidates as well with the open recs in their pipeline.

Jenny K. Pollock:

And I think it's a really neat solution.

Jenny K. Pollock:

So being able to know that you're hiring pool is diverse and not knowing exactly what that diversity looks like makes it even better because you're not going to accidentally be biased.

Jenny K. Pollock:

You're going to be able to go through that candidate pipeline and go through that pool and find the right fit for the job, regardless of some of these things that sometimes get in the way.

Jenny K. Pollock:

And so I think it's really neat that she's using AI in that manner.

Jenny K. Pollock:

And definitely if hiring is one of your bottlenecks, if you're struggling to find diverse candidates, first of all, they're out there.

Jenny K. Pollock:

I have a community of 13,000 women in AI, but also check out Conversa and get it set up because there's a solution here that we didn't have before.

Jenny K. Pollock:

It's so cool.

Coco Salman:

It is so cool.

Coco Salman:

And I learned actually so much listening to that particular episode of your show because it helped me understand that the reason that, that you know, if you, if you work with a company that does the same thing, but without a particular filter around making sure it doesn't, it's not, it's not biased.

Coco Salman:

The, the, the data that it's, that most systems are, are following are inherently biased?

Jenny K. Pollock:

Yes, right.

Coco Salman:

That's the problem.

Coco Salman:

And so without, without even knowing it, you know, a Jenny versus a Carl, you know, might not get as many callbacks just.

Coco Salman:

And that's just part of what's in the data and the logarithms that they're using.

Coco Salman:

So, so it's really important to, when you're looking at different solutions to understand where they're getting their data and if they're doing anything with their, with their, I guess it's the LLM, right.

Coco Salman:

They're largely which model they're where, how they're sourcing that information and are they filtering for it.

Jenny K. Pollock:

So yeah, and with that Coco, I wanted to say have you ever put into one of the image generators, you know, meta AI or mid journey, and said like, can I get a picture of a CEO on stage at a tech conference.

Jenny K. Pollock:

Have you ever asked for that?

Coco Salman:

I haven't, but I can't imagine.

Coco Salman:

Right.

Jenny K. Pollock:

Let me tell you, it's not great.

Jenny K. Pollock:

It always returns a man and even if you ask for a woman, it's something sometimes returns a man.

Jenny K. Pollock:

So it's very upsetting.

Jenny K. Pollock:

And it's looking at all of this data that it's, you know, been fed and it's like, oh, it, it sees that there were, you know, more males at, you know, historic tech conferences.

Jenny K. Pollock:

Right.

Jenny K. Pollock:

So then that's what it spits out.

Jenny K. Pollock:

And so that's why we need the tuning, because there are female CEOs and we want more female CEOs.

Jenny K. Pollock:

So let's not, you know, let the biases in the data which reflect the biases in our society, by the way.

Jenny K. Pollock:

Let's not let that get in the way.

Coco Salman:

Exactly.

Jenny K. Pollock:

Yeah.

Coco Salman:

So Converse is a great example.

Coco Salman:

What else are you.

Coco Salman:

What else is another example of a company doing some cool, revolutionary things?

Jenny K. Pollock:

Yeah.

Jenny K. Pollock:

So in the edtech space, I've actually recently joined to serve as their chief Marketing officer.

Jenny K. Pollock:

There's a company called Dabble and it's run by two amazing founders who I actually met through the women in AI community.

Jenny K. Pollock:

But Siri and Madhu are these amazing technical women building this really cool product.

Jenny K. Pollock:

What they do is they are democratizing access to college counselors by using AI.

Jenny K. Pollock:

So instead of shelling out the big bucks to get, you know, one on one personalized counseling, they're doing it through an app.

Jenny K. Pollock:

So it's 24, 7 AI powered college and career counseling available to everyone.

Jenny K. Pollock:

And I think that this is really important because as you're planning the next stage of your career, what are you going to do after high school?

Jenny K. Pollock:

What are you going to study?

Jenny K. Pollock:

What programs are out there, you want the right fit for you and you need more than 10 minutes with your school guidance counselor.

Jenny K. Pollock:

That's not enough to really plan the foundation for what you're going to do.

Jenny K. Pollock:

So I just, I love that they're making that accessible to people and using this amazing AI AI layer to match the students to the programs, to the colleges, to the careers.

Jenny K. Pollock:

So it's a lot of fun and I think super important for people out there to be able to explore recommendations that are based on things that they like to do, not just, oh, this particular college looks good or whatnot.

Jenny K. Pollock:

It really is.

Jenny K. Pollock:

How do we find what you're excited about and how do you make a.

Coco Salman:

Career out of that?

Jenny K. Pollock:

And I think that's what's important.

Coco Salman:

I think that's so cool.

Coco Salman:

I have a 16 year old junior in high school.

Coco Salman:

She's got to use this.

Coco Salman:

It sounds amazing, right?

Jenny K. Pollock:

Yes.

Coco Salman:

And it's, and it's, it's very, it's, it's very accessible and available to anybody, so.

Jenny K. Pollock:

Exactly.

Jenny K. Pollock:

Yeah.

Jenny K. Pollock:

Well, you know what, we'd love her feedback.

Jenny K. Pollock:

So have her load and hopefully her and I can jump on a call and she can tell me, you know, what works and what's cool and if she likes the color and all of that would be so much fun.

Coco Salman:

She would love that.

Coco Salman:

She would love to do that.

Coco Salman:

She's totally into, you know, women entrepreneurs.

Coco Salman:

Imagine that.

Coco Salman:

Right?

Jenny K. Pollock:

Amazing.

Jenny K. Pollock:

I wonder where she gets that from.

Jenny K. Pollock:

No, I can't imagine.

Jenny K. Pollock:

Right.

Jenny K. Pollock:

I love that you are raising, you know, the next generation of entrepreneurs and that's just so amazing to see her, you know, have an interest like that at such a young age.

Coco Salman:

Yeah, no, I, I'm excited to introduce you to her.

Coco Salman:

She's.

Coco Salman:

She's great.

Coco Salman:

She's super.

Jenny K. Pollock:

Oh, fantastic.

Jenny K. Pollock:

So the other one I wanted to share is actually one for lead generation.

Jenny K. Pollock:

So if you're in the sales side of things, Involve AI by Sumaya Batnagar is amazing.

Jenny K. Pollock:

She's the CTO over there and what she does is she uses AI and she actually takes a look at your company.

Jenny K. Pollock:

So she matches these two together, what is your offering?

Jenny K. Pollock:

And then she looks at the leads that are out there and does the first pitch.

Jenny K. Pollock:

So she won't send the AI won't send you anything that doesn't have a response already.

Jenny K. Pollock:

So every lead you get from them is a warm lead.

Jenny K. Pollock:

I was going to use it for women and I, but we don't have a lead problem.

Jenny K. Pollock:

I have 110 women waiting to come on the show.

Jenny K. Pollock:

So when I get through them and if there's a lull, I'm really excited to try it out.

Jenny K. Pollock:

But it is pretty cool.

Jenny K. Pollock:

So imagine only having warm leads to follow for your sales team.

Coco Salman:

Like, wow, I, I was told, I don't know if you noticed, I was leaning forward.

Jenny K. Pollock:

Right.

Coco Salman:

Like, that's amazing.

Coco Salman:

So it's called Involve AI.

Coco Salman:

Is that right?

Jenny K. Pollock:

Yep.

Jenny K. Pollock:

Involve AI.

Coco Salman:

Okay, we're gonna all go check that out.

Coco Salman:

I know.

Coco Salman:

As soon as soon as we get off the call, I'll be checking them out.

Coco Salman:

So conversa dabble and Involve AI all doing some really cool things to give us perspective on what's happening in AI.

Coco Salman:

So I know that your superpower is driving global monetization strategies.

Coco Salman:

Right.

Coco Salman:

It's one thing to have tools that are cool.

Coco Salman:

It's another thing to make money from them.

Jenny K. Pollock:

Don't I know it?

Coco Salman:

Don't we all know it?

Coco Salman:

Could you walk us through a strategy you've implemented that has boosted revenue for a tech company?

Jenny K. Pollock:

Yeah, so a while back I was at a company called MVU or IMVU and they had a VIP program.

Jenny K. Pollock:

So think of it.

Jenny K. Pollock:

It's online 3D social media app.

Jenny K. Pollock:

And for the VIP program, you know, you got a certain amount of credits and you got to have access to special features and things like that.

Jenny K. Pollock:

But it was only on desktop and it was at only one price point.

Jenny K. Pollock:

So what I did was actually tier the program and bring it to mobile.

Jenny K. Pollock:

So there are three price points instead of just one.

Jenny K. Pollock:

And unlocked a whole new audience of mobile users.

Jenny K. Pollock:

And we were able to achieve the revenue goal for the entire year two months early.

Jenny K. Pollock:

Yeah.

Jenny K. Pollock:

And oh my goodness, this came from a bunch of user research.

Jenny K. Pollock:

And when you're doing anything in the product led growth space, you want to get feedback from your users.

Jenny K. Pollock:

And when they ask for things like, hey, I can't afford the $10 a month, it's too much this month for me.

Jenny K. Pollock:

Okay, great, we'll make a five dollar price point.

Jenny K. Pollock:

I heard you, I understand.

Jenny K. Pollock:

Let's do something that works.

Jenny K. Pollock:

And so what we were able to do was offer smaller set of features at a lower price point, offer the normal set of features at the $10 price point, and then we made an additional tier at $20 that was able to offer above and beyond.

Jenny K. Pollock:

And by doing that, it was just amazing because the users had asked for it, then we delivered it, and that's how we were able to find that success.

Jenny K. Pollock:

So I always say, no matter what you're working on, if you add value to your end users, they will gladly hand over their hard earned dollars because you're adding value to their experience.

Jenny K. Pollock:

And so you can't do any sort of monetization without user research and without talking to your users.

Coco Salman:

So how I, so maybe just I'd love to hear what are your favorite ways of researching and outreaching and getting feedback from users?

Coco Salman:

Users.

Jenny K. Pollock:

So it depends on the company and depends on what you're trying to do.

Jenny K. Pollock:

But I love to do qualitative and quantitative and that typically looks like a survey and user interviews, actually getting on a call and asking your users.

Jenny K. Pollock:

Most of the time I like to do the survey first and if there's anything that seems off or not what I anticipated, that's what I want to talk to the user about.

Jenny K. Pollock:

I'm like, oh, I didn't understand that piece or I don't get that.

Jenny K. Pollock:

And that's where I want to craft the user interview to actually get on a call and go through it.

Jenny K. Pollock:

And if you are in the process of developing something new and you've already done that user research and you have a proof of concept or a wireframe, guess what?

Jenny K. Pollock:

Get on the call again, talk to your users and say, hey, is this what you were talking about?

Jenny K. Pollock:

Does this meet your needs?

Jenny K. Pollock:

And doing that throughout the whole process, by the time you get to launch, that's going to be super helpful because then your users are went on this journey with you and they're excited for the thing you're delivering instead of, oh, hey, I thought about this and made it and I thought you'd like it and is it good?

Jenny K. Pollock:

You know, that happens so, so often in the startup world.

Coco Salman:

Right, right, right.

Jenny K. Pollock:

Yeah, yeah.

Jenny K. Pollock:

So just talking to them and, you know, if you have a product for us, we were lucky because it was a social app.

Jenny K. Pollock:

And so I could just log in, whether it was with my staff account or with an alt account, and I could talk in the chat rooms to the users as well, which I think is really useful.

Jenny K. Pollock:

So sometimes that's not possible, depending on your feature.

Jenny K. Pollock:

But if you can go through the experience.

Jenny K. Pollock:

Right, and talk to them, and if you can't go through the experience of your app or your service anyways and see how it works.

Jenny K. Pollock:

Right.

Jenny K. Pollock:

Even if you're B2B, try selling it to yourself.

Jenny K. Pollock:

Try going through the integrations and the setup process and see what it's like as a user to actually use your product.

Jenny K. Pollock:

And that will uncover so many insights that can then lead to revenue generation.

Coco Salman:

I love that.

Coco Salman:

You know, and there's.

Coco Salman:

It seems obvious, but so often we don't do that.

Coco Salman:

Right?

Coco Salman:

Yeah, we do it from, from the, from the perspective of the company, from the creator of the product, rather than as the customer.

Jenny K. Pollock:

Yes, exactly.

Coco Salman:

Right.

Coco Salman:

And so when you miss that step, boy, but when you do it, you're like, you know, you call up and pretend to be on customer service, you know, call in for a problem and you discover like, wait a minute, I.

Jenny K. Pollock:

Was on hold for 10 minutes, you know, that's too long, or whatever the case may be, you absolutely want to go through it as a user.

Jenny K. Pollock:

And one of my hot tips is whenever you have a new hire, they don't have the company glasses on yet.

Jenny K. Pollock:

They're not sucked in.

Jenny K. Pollock:

And so that's a really good time to say, hey, can you do an audit of, you know, our product and let them Go through and do a SWOT analysis and actually show the strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, and threats that are there.

Jenny K. Pollock:

Because when you're working on it every day, sometimes you're too close.

Coco Salman:

Totally.

Jenny K. Pollock:

Yeah.

Coco Salman:

And I noticed that on your website that.

Coco Salman:

Jenny K.

Coco Salman:

Pollock.com Apps or something.

Coco Salman:

Well, on your website, oh, app resources, you have like a quick swat that you could hand over to a member of your team and say, go through the product.

Coco Salman:

Right.

Coco Salman:

Like a user and, and write down what you, whatever you come up with.

Coco Salman:

Right.

Coco Salman:

So right there on your website, you have that.

Jenny K. Pollock:

Exactly.

Jenny K. Pollock:

And I, you know, I want to make it easy for you, especially for our founders out there, because I know you're busy and I know it's hard.

Jenny K. Pollock:

And so any of the tools that I use, I try and publish, whether it is, you know, app resources, tools, or whether it's tools for women in the field, you know, I think it's so, so important that we help each other.

Jenny K. Pollock:

And so I have a lot of free resources on my website.

Jenny K. Pollock:

Come check it out, and hopefully it's helpful.

Coco Salman:

That's awesome.

Coco Salman:

Well, tell us, tell us one last thing, like, what is one last pearl of wisdom for our founders who are seeking to scale their companies to 20 million and beyond.

Coco Salman:

What would you recommend from your wealth of experience?

Coco Salman:

Yeah.

Jenny K. Pollock:

So when you're looking to really level up your monetization, and I know we've been talking about listening to your users, you have to still do that.

Jenny K. Pollock:

Like, I still stand by that.

Jenny K. Pollock:

But I also want to say you are the expert.

Jenny K. Pollock:

You are the founder of your company for a reason.

Jenny K. Pollock:

So, you know, take all of the things that you're hearing from external parties with a grain of salt.

Jenny K. Pollock:

It doesn't have to, you know, you don't have to go to every whim, wait for a few indicators.

Jenny K. Pollock:

You know, if your users are asking for one thing and you have a certain, you know, critical mass, or if you hear from multiple investors that they want something, or if you notice on your app review store you're seeing a ton of feedback about something specific, then make that change.

Jenny K. Pollock:

But at the end of the day, you are the founder, you are the expert.

Jenny K. Pollock:

It is your company.

Jenny K. Pollock:

And sometimes you innately, innately know what to do.

Jenny K. Pollock:

And so you're going to get all these signals as you're scaling and as you scale, I feel like you get more and more signals, like, as you get bigger and as you find more success.

Jenny K. Pollock:

So you're going to have a lot of stuff incoming and having a really, you know, clear vision and clear focus is important.

Jenny K. Pollock:

So Listen to what's out there, but you don't have to execute on all of the feedback that you're getting.

Coco Salman:

Great advice.

Coco Salman:

And yeah, I would say that's one of the, the spots of a great founder and leader.

Coco Salman:

Right.

Coco Salman:

Is, is like being able to take feedback and.

Coco Salman:

But still, the end of the day, you got to be willing to make decisions and listen to your gut.

Jenny K. Pollock:

Yeah, absolutely.

Jenny K. Pollock:

And I think that's the fun thing about being in that position as well.

Jenny K. Pollock:

Right.

Jenny K. Pollock:

Like you get to surround yourself with leaders and experts, experts and advisors.

Jenny K. Pollock:

And at the end of the day, you get to decide.

Jenny K. Pollock:

So listen to the inputs, but also listen to what's inside of you.

Coco Salman:

Exactly.

Coco Salman:

I love that.

Coco Salman:

So I am sure everybody's wondering how on earth they can participate with you.

Coco Salman:

You do, you do a lot of different things.

Coco Salman:

You've done a lot of app work helping, helping different companies build and create apps.

Jenny K. Pollock:

You're.

Coco Salman:

You just mentioned for Dabble you're a chief marketing officer.

Coco Salman:

How could you know?

Coco Salman:

Tell us how you work with companies, boards, advisors kind of thing and then tell us kind of how you would invite someone listening to get in touch with you.

Jenny K. Pollock:

Absolutely.

Jenny K. Pollock:

So I work in a couple different ways.

Jenny K. Pollock:

I'm serving as the founder, of course, of Women in AI and then I also serve as a fractional chief marketing officer for companies.

Jenny K. Pollock:

I'm really values aligned and looking to support female founders who have software products.

Jenny K. Pollock:

Harvard is really hard and not my area of expertise.

Jenny K. Pollock:

I did it once.

Jenny K. Pollock:

But if you have a software product and you'd help marketing, please reach out.

Jenny K. Pollock:

I would love to chat about how I can help.

Jenny K. Pollock:

The other thing that I'm working on that I haven't announced yet, but I'm going to be doing some sort of female founder cohort to help drive visibility and help them share their voice and level up and really build together.

Jenny K. Pollock:

I did a great job building the stuff at Women in AI and Scaling and now I'm going to be focusing on building, you know, my brand and Dabble's brand.

Jenny K. Pollock:

And I want to invite a cohort of women to build their personal brands and their company brands together.

Jenny K. Pollock:

So stay tuned.

Jenny K. Pollock:

There'll be more information likely in early Q1, but I think that'll be a really fun way to connect and to support each other and to learn together.

Jenny K. Pollock:

And then lastly, for women in AI, we are super, super active on LinkedIn.

Jenny K. Pollock:

Follow us there.

Jenny K. Pollock:

Every single Monday we feature a new AI leader.

Jenny K. Pollock:

On Tuesdays we typically try and release a podcast and then on Saturdays we have something called AI Social Saturday and It's hosted by a community member, one personal question and two AI questions.

Jenny K. Pollock:

So it's a ton of fun.

Jenny K. Pollock:

You're invited.

Jenny K. Pollock:

I'm normally like in my pajamas watching House Hunters and responding to everybody drinking my coffee on Saturday morning.

Jenny K. Pollock:

So definitely join us and please go out there and play with I pick a new tool today and try it out.

Coco Salman:

Yeah, I love that.

Coco Salman:

So.

Coco Salman:

And you also do.

Coco Salman:

One of the things I love is the Friday ford.

Jenny K. Pollock:

Oh yeah, that's on my personal account.

Jenny K. Pollock:

Friday for to follow and I highlight leaders from the different pillars of places I'm interested in.

Jenny K. Pollock:

So I do a lot of work with helping women get on board and think about board service.

Jenny K. Pollock:

And I, I serve on the committee to help plan get on Board week with how women lead.

Jenny K. Pollock:

And so I highlight a board leader every week, mobile leader and an AI leader and they switch a little bit.

Jenny K. Pollock:

I've been doing a lot of female investing, female investors as well, so.

Jenny K. Pollock:

But I kind of pick four topics and highlight different folks in those spaces.

Jenny K. Pollock:

So if you're looking to give your LinkedIn feed a glow up, just check out my Friday for to follow and they'll be four amazing leaders that you should follow every week.

Jenny K. Pollock:

So there's just a lot of fun stuff that we do and you're invited to participate in all of it.

Coco Salman:

I love it.

Coco Salman:

You know, and this, I'm sure everybody can understand why I've just fallen in love with Jenny because it's so, it's so fun and I, I.

Coco Salman:

This is the first time hearing about your visibility cohort that you're working on, but it makes perfect sense.

Jenny K. Pollock:

Sense.

Coco Salman:

You have, you have this remarkable brand.

Coco Salman:

You, you are you being the brand that is so incredibly generous and authentic and you got chops too.

Coco Salman:

So you're like, you've got the brilliance, you know, you've got the brilliance, you've got the kindness, you got the generosity which you know is got to be part of the formula.

Coco Salman:

Right.

Coco Salman:

For creating visibility.

Coco Salman:

Right.

Coco Salman:

People love you because of who you are and you provide never ending value.

Coco Salman:

So like, it's true, it's true.

Coco Salman:

It's really, really true.

Coco Salman:

And then, and then you go on to LinkedIn and you're, you're also, you're really connecting to the people that you're on LinkedIn with.

Coco Salman:

You make every single person you connect with feel as though they're seen and they're heard and that, that I think goes such a long way.

Jenny K. Pollock:

Well, thank you, Coco.

Jenny K. Pollock:

And that is so true.

Jenny K. Pollock:

I feel like there's this need for being authentic Whether it is in business or on LinkedIn or even on a podcast like this.

Jenny K. Pollock:

Because when you show up and when you share your voice and when you can be authentic, that's really where change happens.

Jenny K. Pollock:

And I'm just so in awe of all the work you're doing to help create that space for women to be able to do that.

Jenny K. Pollock:

And so thank you for elevating the voices of women and really being a force for good out there.

Jenny K. Pollock:

Coco, I really appreciate all of your work.

Coco Salman:

Thank you, Jenny.
