Speaker:Les Miserables by Victor Hugo
Speaker:chapter eleven, number
Speaker:9430 reappears
Speaker:and Cosette wins it in the lottery.
Speaker:Jean Valjean was not dead
Speaker:when he fell into the sea, or rather, when
Speaker:he threw himself into it. He was not ironed,
Speaker:as we have seen. He swam underwater until he
Speaker:reached a vessel at anchor to which a boat was
Speaker:moored. He found means of hiding himself in this
Speaker:boat until night. At night he swam off
Speaker:again and reached the shore a little way from Cape Brunn.
Speaker:There, as he did not lack money, he procured
Speaker:clothing. A small country house in the
Speaker:neighborhood of Belaguerre had at that time the dressing room of
Speaker:escaped convicts. Lucrative
Speaker:specialty. Then Jean Valjean,
Speaker:like all the Surrey fugitives who were seeking to evade the vigilance
Speaker:of the law and social fatality, pursued an
Speaker:obscure and undulating itinerary. He
Speaker:found his first refuge at Pradeau, near
Speaker:Busuit. Then he directed his course towards Grand
Speaker:Villard, near Briancon, in the hottest
Speaker:alps. It was a fumbling and uneasy
Speaker:flight, a mole's track whose branchings are
Speaker:untraceable. Later on, some trace
Speaker:of his passage into Aisne in the territory of Civaro was
Speaker:discovered in the Pyrenees, at Akons, in the
Speaker:spot called Grange de Domec, near the market of
Speaker:Chevailes, and in the environs of Peregrine, at
Speaker:Brunis, canton of La Chapelle
Speaker:Gonnette, he reached Paris. We
Speaker:have just seen him at Montfermeil.
Speaker:His first care on arriving in Paris had been to buy
Speaker:morning clothes for the little girl from seven to eight years of
Speaker:age, then procure lodging.
Speaker:That done, he had betaken himself to Montfermeier.
Speaker:It will be remembered that already during his preceding
Speaker:escape, he had made a mysterious trip thither
Speaker:Orlando. Somewhere in that neighborhood of, which the
Speaker:law had gathered an inkling, however, he
Speaker:was thought to be dead. And this still further
Speaker:increased the obscurity which had gathered about him
Speaker:at, ah, Paris. One of the journals which chronicled the fact
Speaker:fell into his hands. He felt
Speaker:reassured and almost at peace, as though he
Speaker:had really been dead. On the
Speaker:evening of the day when Jean Valjean rescued Cosette from the
Speaker:claws of the thenardiers, he returned to Paris.
Speaker:He re entered it at nightfall with the child
Speaker:by way of the barrier Monceau. There he
Speaker:entered a cabriolet which took him to the
Speaker:esplanade of the observator. There he
Speaker:got out, paid the coachman, took
Speaker:Cosette by the hand, and together they directed their steps through
Speaker:the darkness, through the deserted
Speaker:streets which adjoin the urschrin and the glacier
Speaker:towards the boulevard de la Hapilot.
Speaker:The day had been strange and filled with emotions for
Speaker:Cosette. They had eaten some bread and
Speaker:cheese purchased in isolated taverns behind
Speaker:hedges. They had changed carriages
Speaker:frequently. They had traveled short distances
Speaker:on foot. She made no complaint. But she
Speaker:was weary, and Jean Valjean.
Speaker:>> Brie Carlisle: Perceived it by the way she dragged.
Speaker:>> Brie Carlisle: More and more on his hand as she walked.
Speaker:He took her on his back. Cosette, without letting
Speaker:go of Catherine, laid her head on Jean Valjean's shoulder, and
Speaker:there fell asleep.
Speaker:Thank you for joining bite at a time books today. while we read a
Speaker:bite of one of your favorite classics.
