Z62.898 Parental Alienation Relational Problem

This category may be used when a child -usually one whose parents are engaged in a high-conflict

separation or divorce -allies strongly with one parent and rejects a relationship with the other parent

without a good reason.

The diagnosis of parental alienation relational problem usually requires five criteria:

- child avoids, resists, or refuses a relationship with a parent

- presence of a prior positive relationship between the child and the now rejected parent

- absence of abuse, neglect, or seriously deficient parenting by the now rejected parent

- use of multiple alienating behaviors by the favored parent
