:I'm Francesca from under
the covers book blog.
3
:And today I am bringing you more
summer book recommendations and we're
4
:talking book tropes today ' because
I feel like summer is one of the
5
:best times to dive into book tropes.
6
:There are so many fun, fun books
that you can read in the summer.
7
:And we kind of always think of the
classic beach reads and the romcoms.
8
:And while those are perfect for
the summer, maybe there are some
9
:lesser known tropes that you
could be picking up in the summer.
10
:And I've got one here for you today.
11
:And for that, I'm excited to talk to you
guys today about Southern romance books.
12
:Those are the books that are
set in the quaint Southern
13
:towns in the United States.
14
:And they have this very laid back
15
:kind of everybody knows
your business vibe.
16
:A lot of sense of community found family.
17
:A little bit of quirky humor as well.
18
:And overall, I just have a
ton of fun with these types of
19
:books, especially in the summer.
20
:I think summer is actually the
perfect time to be reading them.
21
:If you haven't picked up a Southern
romance book yet, definitely stick
22
:around for some recommendations.
23
:And who knows, maybe you've
already read one that has that
24
:vibe and you just didn't know.
25
:It could even be classified
as a Southern romance book.
26
:If that is the case, and you've
got some recommendations,
27
:definitely send them my way.
28
:If I didn't include them in my list.
29
:So why don't you just grab your
nice tall glass of sweet tea.
30
:And we dive into some fun
and sweet romance books.
31
:Now a little bit of backstory here.
32
:I am not from the United States and
when I did move to the United States
33
:for the first time I moved to Florida.
34
:And not the Miami, Florida vibe, but
like deep Florida kind of territory.
35
:So I definitely got.
36
:First taste of Southern United States.
37
:When I moved here
38
:I never even knew what sweet tea was
until I started going to the restaurants
39
:here and they were asking me if I
wanted my tea, sweet or unsweet.
40
:And I'm like, what are you even doing?
41
:Drinking cold tea.
42
:But I can actually say that since then.
43
:I have learned to make Sweet tea at home.
44
:I haven't made it in
the longest time though.
45
:And if you have to ask, I'm a sweet
tea kind of person, not unsweet.
46
:That being said, though, the vibe that
comes from a Southern romance book.
47
:It's kind of nostalgic for me.
48
:So I really, really enjoyed
when I first found a book that
49
:really captured that essence.
50
:And I have been on the lookout
for books like that ever since.
51
:So today I'm going to share some
of my favorites and we even have
52
:some that you can actually watch
the book to screen adaptation.
53
:So let's just jump right into the books.
54
:The first book that I have on my list is
the sweet gum tree by Katherine Allred.
55
:I had no idea what this book was about.
56
:I'll be honest, when I first read
this book, it had a different
57
:cover and it was published by a
small press kind of publisher.
58
:And it was a horrible, horrible cover
I put it off for the longest time.
59
:There were a ton of people
recommending this book online.
60
:And I just kept getting
put off by the cover.
61
:So I wasn't reading it.
62
:And then one Saturday morning, random
Saturday morning, I was like, you
63
:know what, let me just pick it up.
64
:And when I tell you that there are
very few books that just consume me
65
:and I just have to continue reading.
66
:I didn't do anything else that day.
67
:I read the whole book.
68
:I went through a whole array of emotions
too, because when I tell you that
69
:this is an emotional rollercoaster.
70
:It's a doozy.
71
:This book will take you through ups
and downs and it will just really make
72
:you connect with these characters,
we start off with them as children.
73
:And it's not a pretty back story either.
74
:So you definitely go through all of
those emotions with these children.
75
:They're best friends.
76
:He's the boy from the
wrong side of the tracks.
77
:But the connection that they develop
is just so strong and so powerful, but
78
:as things happen, they're separated.
79
:He moves away from town.
80
:And they both just move on and have their
separate lives until many years later
81
:when we do get that second chance romance.
82
:And I would say that this
book is divided quite well.
83
:in giving you a bit of
both of these storylines.
84
:Of when they were children and
their beginning of their connection
85
:and they're reconnecting as adults
86
:and it's beautiful and it's raw and it's
heart-wrenching, and it's just so sweet
87
:at the same time and so romantic and
it's endearing, and you're just going to
88
:really fall in love with these characters.
89
:So if you want a book, that's going
to take you through the ringer.
90
:You're going to be
prepared with some Kleenex.
91
:Uninterrupted reading time as well.
92
:And maybe even a tub of ice cream,
so you can just eat your feelings.
93
:Then it's the perfect time to
pick up the sweet gum tree.
94
:I would say that it's probably
still to this day, one of my
95
:favorite books that I've read.
96
:And maybe one day I'll actually
make like a top 50 list or top
97
:100 list or something like that.
98
:I can't say right now where it
would fall, but it's definitely
99
:in one of those lists for sure.
100
:Now this book does have a
much better cover right now.
101
:So I think that that should help a
little bit for you to pick it up.
102
:But even if you think that this cover
is very unassuming and you may not
103
:think too much of this story, put
that aside and pick it up because
104
:trust me, you're going to love it.
105
:Another book that is an
absolute favorite of mine.
106
:And it's probably also going to
be in one of those, like best
107
:I've ever read kind of lists.
108
:And it's completely different
because this one is more of a romcom.
109
:It's actually Hollywood
dirt by Alessandra Torre.
110
:This is an opposites attract story.
111
:The hero is a movie star.
112
:He just went through a divorce.
113
:The heroine is from a very small town.
114
:She's a total Southern belle.
115
:And a location scout actually thinks that
her place is perfect to film a movie.
116
:So that's what ends up happening
this big Hollywood celebrity comes to
117
:film this movie and they have to kind
of work together sort of in a way.
118
:As you can imagine these two
could not be more different.
119
:But this book has everything that I love
in a romcom, it has plenty of banter.
120
:It's very steamy and sexy there's
even a quirky little pet animal.
121
:There's so much chemistry and
there's so much tension between them.
122
:I absolutely adore them as a couple.
123
:I love the humor in this story.
124
:It is actually one of my favorite
books by Alessandra Torre.
125
:And I have read a lot of her books
and really enjoyed them as well.
126
:So if you're into celebrity romances,
opposites, attract and you're ready
127
:for all those cute Southern vibes,
then definitely check this one out,
128
:especially if you love a feisty heroine.
129
:And now, as I mentioned before, you can
actually watch some screen adaptations.
130
:Hollywood Dirt has been adapted by
PassionFlix, I actually think they
131
:did a good job adapting the storyline,
even though the characters may not
132
:necessarily be the ones that I would
have envisioned so keeping in mind that
133
:yes, a lot of the PassionFlix movies
are a little bit more lower budget
134
:and that's going to come with all the
limitations that that will bring, but
135
:definitely this was a great adaptation.
136
:If you are the type of reader
that wants to see the book
137
:exactly translated to a movie.
138
:I think they did great.
139
:in keeping the story flowing while
incorporating some of those scenes
140
:that I really wanted to see as a fan.
141
:And even if you don't have a PassionFlix
subscription, they do have a day pass.
142
:So you can actually binge a
couple of different movies.
143
:With just a day pass.
144
:So that might be also a way
for you to add some romance and
145
:book to screen adaptations to
your viewing for the summer.
146
:The next book recommendation
that I have is actually a series.
147
:I have only read the first book though.
148
:So if you want to read more than you
can definitely continue exploring that.
149
:And that is sweet tea and
sympathy by Molly Harper.
150
:And I originally picked up this story
because I have read Molly Harper before.
151
:And she usually adds a touch
of humor to her stories.
152
:And while this book in particular
is a little bit less humor than I'm
153
:used to from her, it still gave me
that kind of a fun vibe in the story.
154
:At the same time, I would say that
while I can call this a women's fiction
155
:novel, it definitely straddles more of
that line of women's fiction and romance
156
:yes, there is romance.
157
:Yes, there's happily ever after, but
the story is really about the journey
158
:that our heroine is going through.
159
:And that is because she's at
a point in her career when
160
:things are just not doing well.
161
:She's trying to figure out what
she needs to do with her life.
162
:And she gets an opportunity
from her father's family and
163
:they're kind of estranged.
164
:Which then basically makes her move to
Georgia and reconnect with those roots
165
:that she didn't really have any relation
with meaning connecting with her father.
166
:Her father's family and just
rediscovering herself in a new
167
:profession a new job a new place.
168
:So lots of changes for her.
169
:Lots of life changes as well.
170
:And I think that this book did a
great job of dealing with that all in
171
:this very charming Southern setting.
172
:So when we talk about that small
town vibe, The neighbors and the
173
:friends and all of that kind of
like getting in the middle of your
174
:relationship and your business this
book definitely gave me all of that.
175
:And like I said, we still also have a
romance and that is with a single father
176
:of two and the principal of the school.
177
:Really sweet, really fun.
178
:And I think a perfect summer read.
179
:The next one is also a series
that you can dive into.
180
:And I've also only read the first book
and it's called Ain't He Precious?
181
:by Sawyer Bennett.
182
:This was originally released
under a different pen name.
183
:It was released as Juliette Poe.
184
:And that is kind of this
sweeter side of Sawyer Bennett.
185
:If you've read a Sawyer Bennett
contemporary romance, you know,
186
:that she writes really steamy
contemporaries and when I read it,
187
:it was published as Juliette Poe.
188
:So I don't know if this was revamped under
the new pen name to add some more spice.
189
:But rest assured that it was
still a really fun story.
190
:It's also really short and quick read.
191
:And a second chance romance.
192
:So we have our heroine.
193
:She's a Harvard law grad.
194
:And she was dating the hero at
the time, which was 11 years back.
195
:They had made plans.
196
:They were going to get married.
197
:They were going to have
this amazing life together.
198
:And all of a sudden she decided that
she was just not a big city girl and
199
:she wanted to move back to her small
town, move back closer to her family.
200
:And just open a small law practice
in that small town and just
201
:their life plans didn't match.
202
:So they ended their relationship.
203
:She's basically gone ahead and done that.
204
:So for 11 years, that's where she's
at and that's what she's been doing,
205
:but now she gets a case and she needs
his help so she calls him out of the
206
:blue for him to come and help her.
207
:And this is the first time that they've
seen each other after the breakup 11
208
:years later, but he gets on a plane
immediately to come to her rescue.
209
:This is definitely super sweet.
210
:I love the relationship between
the characters, but not only the
211
:romantic relationship between
our hero and our heroine.
212
:But also the family members
and the town and all of that.
213
:So I think that you're going to
get all of those really Southern
214
:vibes from this, especially when
it comes to the community aspect.
215
:If you're in the market for a
shorter book, then definitely
216
:this one is one to watch out for.
217
:Another series that I think you
definitely need to put on your TBR.
218
:And I will talk about the first book
more because it's the easiest one to
219
:talk about without giving you spoilers.
220
:But I love the whole series and the
first book is sugar daddy by Lisa Kleypas.
221
:This is the Travis family series
and we do have a series guide for
222
:this on the blog, which I can leave
linked in the show notes down below.
223
:So you can check it out.
224
:It is.
225
:Probably the most well-known
contemporary series by Lisa
226
:Kleypas and don't be fooled.
227
:The first book slightly turns a little bit
more women's fiction than contemporary
228
:romance, but the rest of the books
are just pure contemporary romance.
229
:Gold.
230
:Like I said, the first one is not
necessarily my favorite, but it was
231
:still the four-star read and in this
one, we get to really see a journey for
232
:our heroine it's a rags to riches story.
233
:Also an age gap romance.
234
:Now, when it comes to the romance,
I don't want to give too much away.
235
:And I highly encourage you to try to
skip reading the blurb for book two,
236
:because there is a bit of a push and
pull and love triangle in the first book.
237
:And you definitely will enjoy it more
if you don't know who she ends up with.
238
:Trust me on that.
239
:And then something else that I think
it's important to note when it comes
240
:to Lisa Kleypas, especially if you have
read some of her historical romances
241
:is that this book actually has not
a ton of sex scenes, but they are
242
:more explosive and steamy, I think.
243
:And it's not necessarily because suddenly
she's writing more explicit scenes, but
244
:I think it's because she really captured
the yearning in these characters.
245
:Especially when it comes to our heroine.
246
:The heroine in the story is half Mexican
living in a place where being half
247
:Mexican was not necessarily a great thing.
248
:She also was not born
to a lavish lifestyle.
249
:She grew up with her mother living in
a trailer park and overall, she was
250
:just dealt a bad hand of cards at life.
251
:But in this story, we actually get to see
her from a very young age, grow persevere.
252
:Really develop and show us that
inner strength, even through
253
:some really tough times.
254
:I'm telling you, you're going to want
to trust the process with this one.
255
:It really is worth it.
256
:Everything makes sense.
257
:In the end, even when you thought
that some of those things were
258
:not really developing into
that strong romance connection.
259
:And then once you've finished
reading the book, definitely dive
260
:right into book two blue eyed devil.
261
:It is one of those top books that
I have on my, whatever it is.
262
:Top 50 top 100.
263
:Absolutely loved that book.
264
:You know how sometimes you have those
books where you remember exactly what
265
:you were doing when you were reading it.
266
:Blue eyed devil is definitely
one of those for me.
267
:So you can't really go wrong with
reading the Travis family series.
268
:There's a total of four
books in the series.
269
:They're all siblings.
270
:I guess you could also consider
them kind of billionaire romances.
271
:But the billionaire romances of like old
vintage type of contemporary romance.
272
:Especially with that Southern flair.
273
:The next one that I'm
excited for you guys to read.
274
:It's also a whole series
recommendation and I did also
275
:really enjoy the whole series.
276
:The book is called the secret flying
by Gena Showalter it's the first book
277
:in the original heartbreaker series.
278
:It used to actually be
called the closer you come.
279
:So you might have seen it back then
published under that title, the
280
:setting for this one is in Oklahoma,
which I guess there can be some
281
:question whether it can be considered
Southern or Midwest or Southwest.
282
:But the vibes that you're getting
are definitely Southern small town
283
:vibes so rest assured it will fit
the vibe that you're looking for.
284
:Now in this book, we have
the hero who is an ex-con.
285
:And when I say ex-con,
I mean, true bad boy.
286
:He was in jail, he just got out of jail
and it was for a crime that he did commit.
287
:So we're not going to sugar
coat, anything with this one.
288
:There's no wrongful imprisonment.
289
:He did commit the crime.
290
:And he has to work through those feelings.
291
:And some of that also comes with him
wanting a good girl, which is our heroine.
292
:And knowing really that
he doesn't deserve her.
293
:But he still wants to help her out.
294
:So he hires her as his assistant.
295
:Now as you can imagine, it's going to be
a great dynamic opposites attract story.
296
:In general, for this series, we do
have a group of friends that is the
297
:basis of all of these books, which
I absolutely loved all of them.
298
:I think that they're really great stories.
299
:And that thing that the hero
was in jail for is the thread
300
:that connects all three of them.
301
:So you're going to keep hearing about that
and going through all of those emotions
302
:that each one of them has to deal with.
303
:As it relates to the part that each
of them played in what happened.
304
:I will say though, as much as I've said
that, you know, it's a bad boy story
305
:and there is a crime and all of that.
306
:There's a bit of a silver lining
that really helps you to understand
307
:what happened in the past and why
he ended up where he ended up.
308
:So obviously read it for yourself,
but for me, it was enough for me to
309
:forgive him, look past that and just
absolutely fall in love with him.
310
:I think also that Gena Showalter
writes amazing alpha heroes.
311
:And JAse is just a true alpha.
312
:But as much as we've talked about the hero
up to now, we also have the heroine who
313
:totally just kicks ass and takes names.
314
:And I absolutely adored her.
315
:She has a sister that's a little
bit harder to deal with and she's
316
:had to go through some stuff.
317
:Her sister's definitely more interested
in having a good time and partying
318
:then helping her pay the bills.
319
:So all of that responsibility
of even putting her dreams on
320
:hold has fallen on our heroine.
321
:But she was the perfect mix of fun.
322
:Sassy.
323
:Strong independent and
just not a wilting flower.
324
:So I hope you try out this series.
325
:If you've read Gena Showalter definitely
give it a try and if you haven't yet,
326
:then maybe start here and then move on
to all her amazing paranormal romances.
327
:And the last book that I'm going
to be recommending here today.
328
:Even though it's not the last book that I
have on my list of Southern romance books,
329
:because we have a ton more on the blog.
330
:So I'm going to leave a link to
our blog post, where there's even
331
:more of these amazing Southern
romance book recommendations.
332
:I'm going to leave that linked
in the show notes down below,
333
:but let's get to the final one.
334
:And it is another series that
we do have a series guide.
335
:So you can go and check it out.
336
:It is only three books, it's a trilogy.
337
:It's complete.
338
:You can binge read them.
339
:And this is actually
my top recommendation.
340
:You're into more of the soap, opera vibe.
341
:And rich people problems.
342
:And that is the bourbon Kings by Jr.
343
:Ward.
344
:It is set in Kentucky.
345
:And it has all the glitz and
glamor and riches of a basically
346
:bourbon, royalty family.
347
:The three books are interconnected, but
they each have an HEA at the end of them.
348
:However you do need to read them.
349
:In order, because there is
also a kind of a murder mystery
350
:woven throughout the series.
351
:So you're going to miss a lot of
information if you don't go in order but,
352
:like I said, if you want over the top
drama, especially when it comes to rich
353
:people, then definitely this is going to
capture exactly that southern charm vibe.
354
:If you haven't read J.R.
355
:Ward's contemporaries before,
they're definitely different
356
:than her paranormal romances.
357
:And we do have a whole video
where we kind of talked about
358
:where to start reading J.R.
359
:Ward.
360
:What's the differences between her books.
361
:So I'm going to leave that link up here
and also in the show notes down below.
362
:And we've updated that a little bit
more, not on a video, but on the blog.
363
:So if you also want to
