Consistency is often key in podcasting, and your
Evo Terra:show's format is a part of that.
Evo Terra:But your format is simply a tool that helps you better tell
Evo Terra:the story to your audience.
Evo Terra:Sometimes, a different tool may get better results.
Evo Terra:Today's episode is brought to you by Gumball, the premiere
Evo Terra:marketplace to easily and efficiently buy host-read podcast ads.
Evo Terra:Gumball provides a transparent and modern buying platform, connecting great
Evo Terra:podcasts with the best advertisers.
Evo Terra:Gumball takes away all the logistical headaches for podcasters and advertisers
Evo Terra:alike by managing inventory schedules, providing easy and consistent ad
Evo Terra:script instructions, easy aircheck uploading, and ensuring payments
Evo Terra:are made in a timely fashion.
Evo Terra:Best of all, Gumball takes pride in offering the most podcaster friendly
Evo Terra:terms as a standard, meaning more money flowing directly to the podcaster.
Evo Terra:As it should be!
Evo Terra:If your show is pulling down more than 10,000 downloads per episode, you owe
Evo Terra:it to yourself to talk to Gumball at Gumball.fm to see how they can help you
Evo Terra:make even more money with your podcast.
Evo Terra:That's Gumball.fm.
Evo Terra:And tell 'em Evo sent you!
Evo Terra:Hello, and welcome to another Podcast Pontifications with me, Evo Terra.
Evo Terra:Format!
Evo Terra:Format!
Evo Terra:Format!
Evo Terra:It's drilled into our heads as early stage podcasters, either something to
Evo Terra:choose from and never deviate from, or as something to avoid because
Evo Terra:it's a construct from other mediums and podcasting is meant to be free.
Evo Terra:Look, I've seen successful podcasters take either side.
Evo Terra:Both of those approaches can work.
Evo Terra:And I think that's one of the many things that I love about podcasting; there's room
Evo Terra:to succeed, whether you're a rule-follower or whether you're a rule-breaker at heart.
Evo Terra:Today's episode is for the format adherent podcaster, of which I am
Evo Terra:amongst your ranks, even though I am a notorious rule-breaker.
Evo Terra:But my short form, single topic, monologue show is a format you have
Evo Terra:come to understand and almost expect every single time I put an episode out.
Evo Terra:But here's a reality check for you and me, my format, the format of
Evo Terra:this show, it's just a construct.
Evo Terra:The format on your show that you have chosen is just a contract.
Evo Terra:That's it.
Evo Terra:Whether you're doing a chat cast, a news rundown, reading a daily poem,
Evo Terra:or a narrative deep-dive over twenty episodes, these are all simply constructs.
Evo Terra:They're extremely helpful constructs, to be sure, constructs that help us better
Evo Terra:craft the information or the entertainment that we're imparting to our listeners
Evo Terra:through the stories that we tell.
Evo Terra:No doubt about that.
Evo Terra:But format is just a construct, and sometimes the story that we're telling
Evo Terra:doesn't neatly fit into the construct format we've chosen for our podcast.
Evo Terra:So I'm going to ask a question.
Evo Terra:What's more important, the story, the information you're
Evo Terra:imparting, or the format?
Evo Terra:It's kind of a fake question, right?
Evo Terra:There's one answer to that.
Evo Terra:It's not the format it's the content, it's the information.
Evo Terra:And I'll tell you another thing, it's very likely that your audience, the
Evo Terra:who you are for and why they are there?
Evo Terra:They're not here for your format.
Evo Terra:They're not here because you interview guests.
Evo Terra:They enjoy the information presented, and the interview is just a
Evo Terra:construct that lets that happen.
Evo Terra:They aren't here because you don't interview guests either.
Evo Terra:They enjoy the insight from your shows and a monologue is just the
Evo Terra:construct you're using to give voice to your inner narrative.
Evo Terra:They aren't here because you include exactly three
Evo Terra:headlines from the daily news.
Evo Terra:No, they like being caught up on the most important things.
Evo Terra:The number chosen in the podcast episode is just a construct.
Evo Terra:So sometimes, on occasion and when it is really, really warranted, it's okay to
Evo Terra:temporarily eschew the construct if it better serves or complements the story
Evo Terra:you're telling with your overall podcast.
Evo Terra:You say, I don't think the audience is as invested in your format as you are now.
Evo Terra:They still have expectations from you and of the show, which you need to meet.
Evo Terra:So ignore them at your own pace.
Evo Terra:You look, no, one's going to be happy with you.
Evo Terra:If you try to sneak in an hour long rambly unedited episode, where you're
Evo Terra:interviewing somebody when your last 500 episodes have been tight, less than 10
Evo Terra:minute monologues, for example, but most podcasters are free from the constraints
Evo Terra:of traditional broadcast format.
Evo Terra:And that's a beautiful thing because sometimes when it's really necessary
Evo Terra:to break format, to tell the story, or just part of the story, using
Evo Terra:a better format that will still delight your audience, you can do it.
Evo Terra:Go podcasting!
Evo Terra:Some fun Boostagrams today.
Evo Terra:Now it's time for the boost-the boost-the boost- Boostagram Corner.

Evo Terra:can over to the new Fountain app.
